Chapter 2: Star
You must leave! Hurry!
We can't leave without you!
Trust us! Go now!
Daddy!
Hush now, little one...We are always with you…Never forget…
Hikari woke in a sweat, the dream fading nearly completely from her mind. Only a few voices remained until it was gone completely, safe for one phrase…What was that phrase again?
"My heart...a guiding key?" No...That didn't sound right…
School was a complete drag that day. Was it the notion of summer vacation settling it? Could be, as that it was only a few days away. People were talking about their plans for the month of no school. Most were heading to a beach somewhere or going to the mountains. Hikari still didn't see what the big deal was though she guessed she could understand her classmates to a certain point. Summer vacation was the only time they could get away from their drab lives.
"Earth to Hikari! Yo!" Raven's voice brought her back to the classroom. The guy took his seat next to her. "Geez, Hikari...You've become a real space case these days…"
"Oh shut up." She gave him a light glare.
"I'm only teasing you…" He stared at her. "You've been off a bit lately...Anything going on at home?"
"Not really." Hikari paused. "Just...been having some weird dreams is all…"
"Dreams? Really?" Raven was instantly intrigued. "Do you remember any of them?"
"Not really...Just...feelings…" She frowned.
"Maybe they're your repressed memories of when you were a little kid." Raven suggested. "You know...Maybe finally finding a place had made you think about your past?"
Hikari gave him a raised eye. "How is that possible? I was a baby when Tights Briefs took me in."
Raven shrugged. "Even babies have memories, Hikari."
"Yeah...I guess so…" Hikari hadn't thought of it that way...Maybe her dreams WERE her suppressed memories. "I just wish I could remember them."
"Awe who wants to remember the past anyway?" Raven told her. "You've got your future set in stone! Not many can say that you know." He gave her a wide grin. "Hey...I've got an idea...Why don't we do something over summer vacation? I know you probably would want to stay in the city but there's this really cool place on the outskirts...Nothing but vast mountains and stuff...Totally cool. It might help you out a bit to get away from here for a few days."
"...I don't know…"
"You can bring your family too! Might as well! Your first family vacation!" Raven prodded. "What? You didn't think I was suggesting we go alone did you?"
Red stained Hikari's cheeks. Quickly she dismissed it and glared at her friend.
"Who'd wanna spend a day alone with you anyway?"
Raven's eyes twinkled. "You apparently."
Their banter went on until class began. When the final bell rang, Hikari was once again walking on her own towards Capsule Corporations. She thought of Raven's suggestion all the way home. Would Bulma even agree to it? She probably would, however Vegeta-
"Ack!"
So lost was she in her mind, Hikari crashed into someone but before she could fall, hands grabbed her shoulders.
"You okay?" The guy she bumped into was about her height, probably a few inches taller. He wore a long black coat; unzipped it revealed a regular white shirt and khakis. He looked as though he were heading somewhere. He had an almost dog-like appearance with his droopy slim ears and long nose. Two buck teeth stuck out from his mouth, making his appearance all that more odd and silly...The term 'goofy' ran through Hikari's mind but it seemed so disrespectful to say.
"Yeah...Sorry." She quickly apologized. It was her fault anyway. Something glimmered in her eye. Looking down she spotted an odd keychain...It looked like a star made out of seashells.
"Sorry, that's mine…" He said as she picked it up.
Hikari was more interested in the keychain than the man before her. The keychain was light, fitting perfectly in her hand.
"Tell ya what…" Hands covered her own and she saw the man smiling at her, his black eyes gentle. "Why don't you keep it? It might bring you good luck."
Before any protest could be spoken, the man walked away. Hikari knew very well you weren't supposed to accept anything from strangers but…
Why...Did it feel comforting...To hold this keychain in her palm? There was nothing special about it, just a star made out of sea shells. Yet, why did it feel so...familiar?
Keychain in hand Hikari managed to get home without any more interference. Dropping her bag in her room, she chose to enter the grand balcony. There was Beerus-sama again with Whis at his side along with Goku, Vegeta and others Hikari hadn't met. They were crowding around, discussing something. Maybe she should leave…Deciding it was the best option she turned to head back inside.
"Hikari-chan! Yoo hoo!"
Whis's voice made her stop in her tracks. Now several sets of eyes were staring right at her.
"Ah! Gomen nasai, Hikari!" Bulma was at her side in an instant.
"Iie...No…I'm sorry...Didn't mean to…"
"Ah! You're Hikari huh?" A tall man came forward. He had Goku's hair and eyes but that was pretty much it. "I'm Gohan…"
"Hi…" She said. "Sorry to interrupt...I'll just go inside…"
"Ne, Trunks' big sis! What's that in your hand?" Goten shouted.
Frowning Hikari looked and became startled...The star shaped keychain was still in her palm.
She...never put it down? That's odd...She couldn't remember even having it in her hand after the guy gave it to her…
"It's cool looking!" Goten and Trunks came over to gaze at the trinket. "Where'd you get it!?"
Hikari wasn't listening to them, her gaze still on the keychain. In the back of her mind, she saw the silhouette of a woman, her lips moving but no sound was coming out. Another silhouette, this one of a man, appeared next and she could see his lips forming into a smile as he spoke.
"May your heart...Be...Your guiding key…"
The words came out before Hikari could recognize she had said them aloud.
The next thing she knew...she was falling...And her world became black as night.
