Chapter 3: First Strike

Hikari woke tucked up to her chin in bed. Rising she held her head, a deep pain ebbing there.

"Hikari? Are you okay?" She heard Bulma's voice through the pain.

"My head…" It was practically pounding.

"Just take it easy...You had a great fall, scaring me senseless." Bulma's hand was on Hikari's forehead. "You've got a bit of a fever, too...Just lay back down-"

"The keychain…" Hikari felt a panic settle in. "Where's the keychain!?"

"It's here…" She felt something light in her hands. "It must be something very important to you, Hikari…"

Through the pulsing in her head, Hikari eyed the trinket clutched in her hand. She held it tightly, close to her heart as a great sob began to unfold within.

"It…" Hikari managed to speak. "It belongs to my mother...My...real mother."

That was it...This was the connection to her past...to her real parents...This trinket...It was her mother's…That's why she couldn't let it go, no matter what.

"I see…" Hikari was gently pushed back into bed. "Lay still...You'll feel better in the morning."

Trinket in hand, once again Hikari surrendered to sleep.

Eyes open again, this time Hikari was aware of her surroundings and the trinket in her hand. She couldn't believe it but in her heart she knew it to be true…

This star shaped pendant...belongs to her birth mother.

A knock and Bulma entered. She sat down on the bed next to Hikari.

"How are you feeling?" She asked.

"Tired...Lost…" Hikari confessed immediately. Her gaze still on the trinket she said, "And also...Warm…"

Bulma smiled gently. "Well...At least your fever is gone...Do you feel like going to school today? It IS the last day." Hikari looked at her. "You slept through all of yesterday...Today is the last day of school."

"Oh…Yeah…" Hikari made to rise from her bed. "I...Guess I should get going…"

"You sure?" Bulma asked and Hikari nodded.

"I'm fine...Promise." Hikari stared at the woman. "Say, Bulma...Could we...Go somewhere? Maybe...The outskirts of the city? Just for a bit you know...Like…"

"Like a family vacation?" Bulma finished Hikari's thought. "Sure! You just say when you're ready to go and we'll go!" Rising Bulma went to her. "When you're ready to talk more, just know I'm here, Hikari."

Hikari nodded. "I know...And thanks…"

The walk to school was silent but Hikari was shaking. Would she by chance come across the man again? She hoped so...She could ask him questions, like where he got the trinket. He looked too young to be her actual father...So...Maybe he knew her parents or something? It was possible.

She hadn't seen the man on her way to school but upon entering her classroom Raven all but bombarded her with questions.

"Hikari! Where have you been!? I've been so worried!" He was practically screaming at her, holding her by the shoulders. "Are you hurt!? Are you sick!?"

"Geez calm down. I'm fine." Gently she pushed him away. "I just...had a slight cold is all…"

"Oh good...You scared the crap out of me sister!" Raven gave her a glare. "Next time tell me when you're going to be out okay?"

"Sorry...It kinda just...Happened." She stared at him. "Oh...Bulma said the vacation thing...She wants to do it. I just have to tell her when."

Raven instantly perked up. "Really? That's great! Why don't we plan it in a couple of days? Unless you'll get sick again."

Hikari shook her head. "No...I'll be fine…"

The day came and went; a few days later the Briefs family was out in the outskirts of town, enjoying the beautiful scenery.

"This was a good idea Hikari!" Bulma smiled at her.

"I'm just surprised you got Vegeta to come…" Indeed the silent husband was there, leaning against a tree as though he were asleep, though Hikari knew differently.

"Oh Vegeta's just a big pushover." Bulma waved her off then elbowed her. "Where's this friend of yours, Raven, huh? Isn't he supposed to be here?"

"Yeah, he said he was going to be late." Hikari said with a blush on her cheeks.

"Oh...I'd say you're more than friends by that blush." Bulma grinned.

"We're just friends! Honest!" Hikari eeped. "But...Bulma…" She stared at the woman. "Why is Goku, Gohan, and Goten here?"

The Son men had come with them and were currently enjoying a game of catch the ball with Trunks. Hikari didn't expect to see them on this weird outing.

"Oh I invited them." Bulma told her. "Goku and his boys are part of my family so...It just seemed right to bring them."

"Hey! Someone's coming!" Goten shouted.

Sure enough someone was heading their way...It was Raven.

"Raven!" Relief enveloped Hikari as she raced to him. "I didn't think you'd make it."

"What? And miss a gathering like this? No way." Raven chuckled then gazed at the group in front. "You've got a big family, Hikari…"

"Yeah…" She also stared at the Briefs and Sons. "I...I guess I do."

"So you're Raven." Bulma herself came up. "Nice to meet you…"

"You as well." He nodded. "Say...I've got a game we can all play...It'll be loads of fun!"

"I'm not one to play games, Raven." Hikari said.

"Trust me." He gave her a smile. Something though...Seemed...Off... "You'll like this one."

It happened so suddenly Hikari had no time to react...She recalled strong arms pulling her away….And Bulma's lifeless corpse in her arms.
