Fear landscapes. It was the final test of round one for the Dauntless recruits. It was a test of how they could overcome their fears. But before they got to the final stage, they were allowed to see their fear landscape at least once before the final test. Usually, the training instructors were the ones watching the tests, but Max decided he wanted to pay attention to the top ten recruits on the board.
Al was nervous about his test, but Bella reassured him that everything would be fine. Not to freak out and do the most Al thing and blow it.
Bella was at ease. She knew how to work the simulation. Being Dauntless wasn't hard for her. It was natural in every way. She was first on the board so that meant she was first up. She walked to the little room where they did the simulations. Eric was there as was Max.
"Relax." Eric said gruffly and Bella sat down on the chair and Eric injected her in her neck. She leaned back in the chair and her eyes fluttered shut. She was enveloped in darkness.
Drip… drip… drip… drip…
The darkness surrounded Bella like it was a dark curtain. The eerie dripping of water sounded loud. She moved around. There was water around her, but her feet were flat on the ground. So she was in water and the darkness. She felt her heart start to race as fear started to sink it's hooks in her. She moved around then, trying not to disturb the water too much. She listened for the dripping, letting her other senses take over since she couldn't see. It was almost a paralyzing feeling being in something that dark.
Drip… drip… drip…
The water dripping sounded louder. She was headed in the right direction. She felt something bump against her legs and she froze. Did she move into something or did something move into her? She stayed still, waiting, listening.
Drip… drip… drip…
Something bumped into her. It wasn't her moving towards something, there was something in the water with her. Anxiety rose. What was bumping into her? She moved a little closer to the dripping sound and that same something bumped into her again, but it was harder now. She swallowed, tamping down her fear as she moved faster towards the dripping. When she got there, she felt around in the dark. Her hand connected with something metallic. She grasped it and it started turning. Something bumped into her again, a little harder and so she twisted faster until she saw just a sliver of light and she unlocked a door. She pushed and it opened. The light filtered in and she looked behind her and saw some sort of creature rushing towards her. She remembered seeing them in a book once. A shark. She hurried and clambered up out of what was a tank now. She pulled herself up just in time. It was like the fear was shifting and making it harder for her to get out of danger. When she made it out of the darkness and water, she was standing on a cliff. She seemed to be really high up and she closed her eyes. She didn't have time to be afraid of how high she was. Heights. She was afraid of heights but had overcome it when she came to Dauntless. Somehow the fear stayed with her. She looked over the cliff side and she felt her heart drop. There was water at the bottom. She didn't know how to swim. She looked behind her and the ground started to crumble around her, forcing her to jump.
She closed her eyes and she jumped, the wind whipping around her as she fell what felt like forever until she hit the water below. She kicked her legs and pulled at the water with her hands, trying to reach the surface and be able to breathe. Her lungs screamed at her as she thrust herself up. The water around her was darker than she cared for, but she continued to swim up the best she could until she felt her chest burn as she released air, but couldn't breathe in air. She forced herself forward, panic nearly setting in but she made it to the surface and she sucked in a big breath. She kicked her arms and legs around her to "swim" towards shore. When she got there, she felt the weight of her limbs from the struggle. She was exhausted, but she kept moving away from the water. Suddenly the world spun.
Bella shot up out of the chair fast, gasping. Eric was there to stop her.
"Easy." Eric said and Bella calmed down. Max looked amused.
"What?" Bella asked, blinking.
"Three fears. That's a record." Max commented. "Congratulations Bella, you've passed." He said and Bella got to her feet.
Eric nodded. "Alright, Lukas is next." He said and moved Bella along.
Bella left the simulation room and looked at Lukas as he walked towards her. "Your turn."
Lukas nodded and then leaned in, kissing her quickly before walking towards the simulation room.
Bella blew out a breath as she made it over to the others. She looked at Jasper, nodded and he nodded back. She had made it through the simulation. She didn't know what would pop up in the simulation, but she was glad it was only three things. The dark she knew. She didn't realize how afraid of water she was. She didn't really know how to swim, but she had done it in the simulation. Now she just had to wait for the others to make it through theirs.
Max left the simulation room after the tenth recruit, which was Nick. He had seen enough, which is what Bella and Eric were banking on because Al was spazzing out about his simulation.
Four walked in and he whistled gathering everyone's attention. "Alright, we're speeding this up. I'm starting at the bottom and working up towards the middle. Nathan, lets go." He said and Nathan, the last one on the list, followed Four. It was surprising that there was someone worse than Al. Nathan was it. He was not physical at all. It's like he gave up a long time ago and he was going through the motions now.
Bella stretched a little before she started working out, hitting the bags. Her kicks were powerful and even after being stabbed twice and shot. She was capable of such power. She had to stay focused on being strong because she didn't know what the second round entailed. They had to stay ready because there was no telling what Max was going to throw at them next.
Max called Eric into his office after all the simulations and Eric walked in and closed the door behind him. "I'm impressed with the top ten this year."
"I am too. Seems like we got a good bunch."
"Yeah. The bottom. Go ahead and cut them loose. They're holding you back. Push the second round. We don't have time to pussyfoot this Eric."
"Sir, that's expediting the round. What about their training?"
"They're trained enough." Max barked. "Bella, she's leadership material. Make it happen. Lukas too. I want them leading the next training exercises. Of course you and Four are overseeing it. But it's time we test them beyond the wall."
Eric frowned. "Sir, we don't even send some of our more seasoned people beyond the wall. Why the sudden change?"
"We need strong recruits. That's it. If they can't make it past this, then they're not Dauntless material." Max said.
Eric swallowed but he nodded. "Alright. Do you want me to take Bella and Lukas to get them leadership gear?"
"Yes. I want them outfitted with palm pilots so I can contact them directly."
Eric nodded again. "Got it. Anything else?"
Max nodded. "Yes. I want you to select who you think you can trust the most and Jeanine has two more Divergents that need to be disposed of."
"You want me to take a recruit to show them what to do with Divergents?" Eric verified.
"Did I stutter Eric?"
"No sir. That person is Bella. She's emotionless when it comes to the hard things." Eric said with a nod.
Max nodded. "Very well. I'm glad her assassination attempt was foiled. We would have lost the best." He admitted.
"Me too sir." Eric said and he meant that. He would have lost his shit if he lost Bella and it was Max's fault. He still despised Max and look forward to the day that he could take him off his throne here in Dauntless. "Alright, I'll get those things done. If you need anything, just ping me."
Max nodded. "Very well." And he watched Eric leave.
Eric walked towards the recruit sleeping quarters. He walked in to see Bella and Jasper grappling while Al and Tris watched intently, like they were studying what to do. He whistled. "Bella, come with me now." He barked out.
Bella sighed and released Jasper from the armbar and got to her feet and followed Eric out. "What's going on?"
"We're getting Lukas." Eric said his tone short. They walked across towards the Dauntless born sleeping quarters and he whistled at Lukas. "Lukas. Now." He barked and Lukas got up off his bunk and walked out towards Eric and Bella looking confused.
Bella glanced at Lukas, but they remained silent as they followed Eric.
Eric took them past the bazaar in an area of Dauntless that Bella wasn't familiar with. He paused and placed his hand on a scanner that was outside a metal door that looked like a hatch. It opened and he led Bella and Lukas inside.
Bella looked around. It was an armory. "What is going on?"
"The first round is over."
"Wait what? I thought-"
"It's being expedited." Eric said as he pulled two weapons off the wall. He then picked up a tablet looking thing and hit a few things. He grabbed a couple holsters and put the guns in them. They were sidearms. Different from what they used in training with the recruits. He handed the first gun and holster to Bella, then the other to Lukas.
Bella frowned, but she clipped it to her waist. "Eric, can you talk to us?"
Eric swallowed, not looking at her just yet. "You and Lukas are being moved to leadership immediately."
"That doesn't make sense." Lukas said.
"Well, it does now." Eric said, and then he moved around the room, opening what looked like a locker. He pulled out some other gear. It was similar to what Eric wore. He looked at some sizes until he settled on a couple. He closed the locker then handed Lukas and Bella the gear. There were stripes on the arms of the jackets. It was an indication of Dauntless leadership.
Lukas shrugged the jacket on and so did Bella.
"Okay, so what now. What about round two?" Bella asked.
"Round two… is going to fall on you two." Eric said then he opened another locker and grabbed some stuff out of it. It was two palm pilots. He grabbed a few batteries that went to them and the chargers. He set them on the table in the room and picked up the tablet then typed some things out on it. He activated the palm pilots, giving Bella and Lukas access to level one Dauntless leadership material. When he was done, he handed them their palm pilots. "These ping, you answer it immediately. Max's office is up two floors here. Take the second stairwell up." He explained.
Bella looked at the palm pilot and frowned. "Eric, I need more information."
Eric's steel eyes stared at her. "Be ready tomorrow. I need you for a special mission." Was all he would say.
Lukas nudged Bella and he subtly showed her the camera.
Bella realized and she just nodded. "Yes sir." She said with a nod.
"Good. Now, gather your things. I can't keep you in recruit quarters with weapons registered to you. Do it quickly and do not speak to the other recruits about what is happening." Eric instructed.
Bella and Lukas nodded then they left, Eric after them.
Bella had so many questions but she knew that she couldn't talk to Eric until later. When they got back to the recruit quarters, Bella walked over to her bunk and she opened the chest at the end of her bunk then she grabbed some things.
"What's going on?" Jasper asked first.
"Nothing." Bella said, but it was clear something was happening. She threw things into a bag that they were given at the start of training and she slung it over her shoulder. The red stripe was clear on her shoulder.
Tris was in disbelief. "What the fuck is going on? Bella, why are you wearing leadership gear?"
"Have a good night." Bella said, she turned and started out of the student sleeping quarters. Jasper ran after her. He grabbed her arm. "Jasper. I can't. I have my orders."
Jasper frowned. "What's about to happen?"
"I can't." Bella said quietly. "Something is up. I don't know yet." She said quickly.
Jasper shook his head. "Don't keep me in the dark."
"I don't intend to. I'll… meet you at the bazaar later tomorrow night." Bella said quickly and left Jasper there guessing on what was happening.
Bella met Lukas out in the pit with her bag. "So now what?"
Eric arrived just then. "Come with me." He instructed and he led them up near where his room was. There were other doors that obviously went to other rooms. He opened a door and nodded to Lukas. "This is you." He said, Lukas nodded and went inside, tossing his bag on the bed, but then came back out to see where Bella was going to be. Bella's door was next to Eric's conveniently. She put her bag down as Eric and Lukas came inside the room. Lukas shut the door.
"You better fucking explain right now." Bella said as she turned.
"Max expedited the rounds. I'll announce tomorrow. I have to drop the bottom nine off in Factionless tonight. I have no time to talk about this in detail."
"Eric you can't just-" Bella started.
Eric cut her off. "I have no choice. Roo will take care of the nine I bring him. The Factionless are not as bad off as everyone believes. Don't be naïve." He said to Bella. "In the morning, I need you to report to Max's office at 5am. We have to take care of two Divergents."
Bella shook her head. "Eric, why is this happening now?"
"I don't fucking know. I just know that Jeanine is changing things up and making Max react faster. Whatever it is, we just need to be prepared." Eric said and sighed. "We don't have any choices right now. I have a lot to worry about."
Lukas thought about it. "It's the new serum that she's pushing in."
Eric looked at his brother. "The new serums are for simulations."
"Exactly." Bella said. "What about the plans that Al brought you."
"They're blueprints. It's for a new simulation room they're building in Erudite. She had them under lock and key. Something about a Founder's box."
Bella thought about it. The Founder's box was something familiar to her and she was trying to place where she heard that from until it clicked. "Eric. The Founder's Box is in Abnegation."
"Okay." Eric said, still not understanding yet.
Lukas gasped. "Oh fuck. Jeanine is starting a coup."
"She is. Oh shit." Eric said and crossed his arms. "Okay, but why now?"
"I don't know." Bella admitted. "Either way, they're expediting the rounds because they're planning something with the new serums. If they're for simulations and it's that much, then they could be planning to put everyone in a simulation."
Eric didn't know how he hadn't seen it before. He had been preoccupied with the issues with George and the water issue that he didn't even see what was right in front of him. "Okay. We need to be strategic. We can tell George about what's happening tomorrow. Get him the sketch of the hydroponic system. I'll tell Roo tonight about what we discovered. He can get the information back to Evelyn."
"Who's Evelyn?" Bella asked.
"Evelyn Johnson. She's the leader for the Factionless. They have been building an army for years." Eric explained.
Bella shook her head. "How did I not know this? I mean, I was around Factionless a lot growing up. We fed them, gave them clothes."
"It's part of how they survive too. Evelyn has been planning and plotting the perfect moment to take down the faction system." Eric said and ran his hands over his face. "Okay. I have to go take care of the nine. Get word to Al and Jasper about what's going on when you have a chance. Remember there are eyes on you. Max has his minions everywhere. Peter being one of them. So, you can't talk freely around him."
"No fucking way." Bella exclaimed.
Eric nodded. "Yes. I found that out recently. But that was with some digging. Max doesn't know that I know Peter is a mole."
Bella couldn't believe it. She felt like everything was coming full circle now and making sense. But now that she was leadership, she knew that things were about to get tougher. "Alright. Go. Take care of the nine. I'll get to Jasper tomorrow night at the bazaar and he'll get back to Al." She said. "Until then, Lukas and I will stay up here. We'll wait for your orders."
Eric nodded. "Alright." He said and then he went to her and kissed her softly. "I love you."
"I love you too. Please be careful." Bella said and she watched Eric leave. She looked at Lukas. "This is all fucked."
Lukas nodded, agreeing with her. "This is completely fucked.
