Bella walked into the training room, watching Jasper on the mats with Christina. Lukas and Four were standing next to each other, watching the spar. Eric went to Carlisle to get checked out from his graze with the ravager, but they had remained quiet the rest of the way to Dauntless. She needed to think and he was hovering. Lukas glanced at her when she came to a stop beside him.
"Everything good?"
"Nope." Bella said and shook her head. "He knows."
"Knows what?" Lukas asked, frowning. Bella gave him a look and he understood then. "Oh. I didn't tell him."
"I know." Bella blew out a breath. "I don't want to talk about it right now." She said and tried to ignore the nausea starting to rise in her throat.
Eric sat on the bed in the infirmary while Carlisle bandaged his side. "I could have done this myself but I wanted to come see you anyways." He said.
Carlisle nodded, finishing up bandaging Eric. "I sent the medicine to George already. I just haven't seen you today to tell you." He said and leaned back.
"That's not it." Eric said and sighed. "Bella's pregnant."
Carlisle raised a brow, crossing his arms. "So she talked to you."
"No, I overheard Lukas and Jasper talking about it. She went on her mission today with the Divergent kids anyways. We were attacked by a ravager on the way back."
Carlisle sighed. "I can't make her not do her job Eric. It's Bella we're talking about."
"I know. I just… why wouldn't she come and tell me? How long has she known?"
"She found out yesterday." Carlisle said simply. "She told me you two broke up."
Eric frowned. "She found out after we… argued…"
"I'm assuming yes."
Eric was quiet for a while. He was thinking about everything that she went through and everything that she was going through. None of this was easy. Killing Tris did send her into a dark place. She almost overdosed and died. He's nearly lost her so many times and yesterday, he was an idiot and tried to throw it all away. "She's so focused on saving everyone else, that she's sacrificing so much. I'm such an ass." He said, rubbing a hand over his face.
"I'm sure that whatever it is, you two can work it out. You're going to need each other more than ever now." And that was the truth. They would need each other more now than ever.
A few days passed and Bella kept her distance from Eric. She needed time to figure things out in her head and everyday she was reminded they there were tiny lives growing inside her. The morning sickness came in waves sometimes. Fortunately by the time training came at seven, the medicine kicked in. Today she wasn't in training. She was patrolling around the factionless areas. Lukas was with her this time. They did everything in pairs since the last wall breach. She heard the whistle and she glanced around before she walked over to the man that they used as a courier to get messages between factions.
"Hey Ty." Bella said with a nod. "You have something for me?"
Ty, a factionless man about Eric's height and weight nodded. He had been Dauntless before, but he lost his nerve after final rounds. He went factionless and never looked back. He had dark hair that was to his shoulders now. He had a couple piercings and the tattoo on his hand was a dragon. His hazel brown eyes were more orange than anything and he had a beard that needed trimming. "Message from Cal." He said, referring to Caleb. He handed Bella the paper.
Bella took the paper and nodded. "Thank you." She said and took a couple vials of medicine from her pocket and handed it to Ty. Ty took them and disappeared. Bella broke the seal on the paper and opened it. She looked at it, her eyes dancing over the paper.
Bells,
Jeanine knows there's a leak in Dauntless. She thinks it's Max. She's paranoid that everyone is against her that isn't Erudite. She doesn't trust Dauntless anymore. She talks about only trusting you because you're my sister and you have been dispatching so many Divergents lately and she's impressed. She wants Max killed. She is sending you an encrypted message to your palm pilot with my help. Take it. Eliminate Max. She will announce your takeover in Dauntless shortly after his death. Do it quickly, don't hold back. In other news, the devices that scan everyone are being deployed as drones. It will scan every citizen in the city. I have secretly programed them to overlook our inner circle but just know whatever it is we are planning, it needs to happen soon. Things will fall apart otherwise. I will write you in one week if I don't hear that Max is dead.
Love, C.
Bella shook her head. "This isn't good." She said and handed the letter to Lukas. Lukas took it and read over it.
"Fuck."
Bella blew out a breath. "Okay. Let's get back. We have to talk to the others about this."
Lukas agreed. Things were escalating and they were moving fast.
Everyone was gathered in Bella's room that night. Carlisle hardly left infirmary but this was important. Eric and Four stood to the side, arms crossed as they assembled. Jasper sat on Bella's dresser with Lukas while Carlisle sat at the desk.
"Things are changing." Bella began. Caleb says that Jeanine is losing it. She knows Dauntless has a leak and she's blaming Max. She wants him killed and wants me to do it. I got the transmission shortly after Lukas and I got back to Dauntless."
Eric frowned. "Killing Max. That will open up-"
"Jeanine is taking control. She's moving faster than we anticipated originally. She's naming me head of Dauntless following Max's death." Bella said, not looking at Eric.
"Wait a damn minute. That is insane. How is she-" Eric started.
"She doesn't trust you." Bella said. "She tried having you killed before. She's not going to hand the keys to Dauntless to you. Caleb said that she trusts me because I'm his sister and I've been killing Divergents for a while. They're deploying drones that will scan every citizen in the city to determine if they're Divergent. Caleb has programmed the drones to only see Divergents outside this group. We can't sit still any longer. We need a plan to stop Jeanine and it needs to happen fast."
Everyone was quiet a moment before Jasper spoke. "We're not ready. We don't have the weapons and we don't have the man power."
"We need to be ready." Bella said simply.
Eric cleared his throat. "What about the serums? Half of Dauntless is injected with it and the simulation can be turned on at any time. She has the advantage here."
"He has a point." Carlisle agreed.
"We shut it down from the inside. Have the program wiped. We have the factionless army that are ready at a given notice." Four added.
Bella nodded. That was an idea. "First things first. I'll have to kill Max in the next couple days. That will signal Caleb to deploy the drones. I think we can use that distraction. There are likely far more Divergents hiding in the factions. They probably don't even know they're Divergent. Jeanine will have her hands full with that. We have Caleb start coding the simulation to have a fail safe. We can control this outcome. We're smarter than Jeanine. We can do this." Bella said.
Eric didn't like the idea of Bella having to kill Max. "Bella you can't put yourself in extreme danger." He pointed out.
Bella sighed. "I'm pregnant not disabled Eric. I'll be fine. I can handle Max without struggling. Trust me."
Eric still didn't like this. This was the first time she really spoke to him in a few days and he was worried about her. He missed her laying in his bed. Missed holding her and missed being able to kiss her. He loved her so much it hurt and he just wanted things to go back to normal. He would apologize as many times as she wanted him to if it meant he could have her back.
"Okay. I'll get word to George that things are happening and to be ready." Carlisle said and stood. "Keep me in the loop and don't forget your appointment with me tomorrow." He said and left.
Four looked at his watch. "I'll send word to my mother. Let her know we're getting ready." He said and left the room.
Lukas and Jasper got to their feet and glanced to Eric before they looked at Bella. "This isn't going to be a walk in the park Bella. Please be careful." Lukas said then kissed her forehead before grabbing Jasper's hand and left, leaving Bella there with Eric.
Eric was silent a moment before he walked towards her. "Bella…"
"I'm going to be okay." She said, looking up into his steel eyes. She missed him. Missed his touch. Missed his lips on hers. She needed him to hold her but if she gave in then what did that mean? What was she even fighting against anyways? She admitted that she was wrong too. That maybe she was going too far with Max. She was being stubborn too. She couldn't place blame on Eric for hurting like he was. She put him through a lot and he still tried. He was trying now too. She could see how worried he was and how badly he wanted to reach for her and hold her. But he was giving her the time she asked for. He was trying. So she should try too. No relationship was perfect. No body was perfect. She loved him. To her very core she loved him. She stood there just thinking about everything that she didn't realize that she reached for him. Her small hands moved around him, brushing around his side to his back. She lay her head on his chest, hearing the uptick in his heartbeat when she touched him.
Eric inhaled her scent, his body relaxing under her touch. Her embrace was all he needed. Tears filled his eyes and his arms came around her too. He didn't realize he sobbed a little until she leaned back to touch his face to brush away his tears.
"Eric." Bella said, her voice filled with emotion. His lips came down and touched hers. It sent thrills through her when he did and so she parted her lips letting him sweep his tongue across hers. The fire ignited in both of them. Before she knew it she was on her bed, her clothes off and so was his.
His hands pleasured her, the much needed release was on its peak and when she broke free, she shuddered, moaning out Eric's name when she did.
Her hands moved over his hard body before she grasped his hard cock in her hand. She stroked him fast and he moaned his mouth kissing her at her neck before she guided him to her dripping wet entrance. He pushed inside her and she sighed, a pleasured sigh. He moved his hips slow and deliberate, his hands tangling with hers, his mouth kissing her like he would never get to kiss her again.
They both needed this. They needed each other more than either realized. Eric felt himself rise, swelling tight inside her before he pushed deep inside and oozed out. He moaned, tears wetting his face again.
Bella looked up into his stormy eyes and she brought her hands up to frame his face. "I forgive you. I… I love you so much… stay with me." She murmured.
Eric sniffed, nodding. His lips brushing hers again. He shifted, pulling out of her and laying next to her in the bed. She curled against him and he held her. He couldn't find the words yet to explain how he felt right now. He moved a hand down over her bare stomach. He was going to be a father which both terrified him and excited him. Bella's body relaxed fully against him, signaling that she was sleeping now. He kissed the top of her head and then swiped tears off his face as he held her. He never wanted to be without her again. He would do anything for her. No matter what.
