Ahsoka, Anakin, and the Jedi Masters were all standing in a room within the facility, having decided to give Padmé and her babies a little privacy to discuss a matter of importance.
It started by Ahsoka who was looking at Mace rather coldly saying, "So, what exactly is it that you want of me?"
Mace answered sincerely, "Ahsoka Tano, I was wrong when I went along with what the Senate demanded and had you expelled. We were all wrong in what we did. We have no excuse."
Ahsoka commented, "Funny how you said back then that it was all my 'big trial', and now when the order's gone and you want me back in, you finally admit your mistake!"
Plo Koon spoke, "Soka, I was wrong to do what I did to you. Before that fateful event, I had always looked out for you, but when you needed me the most, I just did nothing but go along with the council's wishes. Anakin was literally the only Jedi who helped you when it should have been me fighting for you."
Ahsoka turned to him and replied, "At least in the end, you admitted that the council was wrong. But Master Windu just dismissed it all like it was nothing. Since when did he suddenly start feeling apologetic if I may ask?"
Mace answered, "Since Anakin saved my life."
"Wait, what?" Ahsoka said, confused, "I thought I saw a vision of something like that happening. The Chancellor was attacking you and Anakin was trying to save you. Is that what was happening?"
"Yes," Mace explained, "Palpatine was trying to turn Anakin to the dark side saying that he could prevent Padmé from dying in childbirth, but Anakin refused. In a fit of rage, he tried to shock me with lightning to death, but Anakin stepped in and saved me with his lightsaber on time. It was after that when I realized that I had been wrong all along about the two of you. If I was wrong about Anakin, then I was wrong about you as well. I have no excuse for what I did back then, and if I could go back and change things, I would, but I can't. All I can say is, I am deeply sorry for what I did, and I hope that you will forgive me."
Yoda spoke, his ears drooping down with shame, "Blinded we were by our arrogance. Too controlled by the Senate, we allowed ourselves to be. Realized it too late, we did. Lost a great Jedi, we did because blindly acted we did for the sake of the Senate. Sinned, we did by condemning an innocent to expulsion and death. Now, gone the order is. Left, very few of us are, because of our arrogance. Failed to recognize the Sith lord in our midst, and our own arrogance, we did. Led to the fall of the Jedi order, our arrogance has. A metaphor of this fact, your ordeal and our role in it are. Placed the Senate's demands and our face over compassion, we did, when properly investigated your case, we should have instead of expelling you when plead you did for our help. Apologize, we did not even. Brushed it off as a big trial, we did. Wrong we all were. The only one right here, Skywalker was. Did what we should have done, he did. Late it may be, but remain blinded, I shall not. Beg for your forgiveness, I do, even though, deserving of it, I may not be."
"We were all wrong," Shaak Ti spoke, "We all beg for your forgiveness."
And with that, she and Yoda bowed their heads. The other Jedi Masters did the same.
Ahsoka, seeing this, was surprised beyond belief. Never had she imagined that the Grandmaster himself would bow to a mere former padawan for forgiveness.
Even Plo Koon had his head down as he repented for not helping the one he had come to see as his own daughter.
Ahsoka was taking in the scene with an open mouth when she heard a voice say, "Ahsoka."
She turned around and saw Anakin, holding his right hand out.
"Please," Anakin spoke pleadingly, "Please Ahsoka, the entire Jedi Council begs for your forgiveness. Please Snips, come back."
Ahsoka turned back to look at the Jedi Masters and said, "Alright, I forgive you."
The Jedi Masters looked up in relief even as Ahsoka said, "Only, one thing, don't do this ever again to anyone, what you did to me."
"Repeat this heinous error," Yoda replied, "We shall not."
Ahsoka then turned to Anakin, then back to Yoda and said, "And also, one more thing. Is it possible for me to rejoin the order?"
Anakin's joy knew no bounds upon hearing that and he beamed, as did everyone else, even Mace.
Yoda said, "Welcome you back into the Order we do, and with great joy. Kneel Padawan Tano."
Ahsoka kneeled accordingly.
Yoda then turned to Anakin and asked, "Borrow your lightsaber for a moment may I?"
Anakin unclipped his lightsaber and handed it to Yoda.
The grandmaster then spoke, "Jedi, we all are. Through us, the Force speaks. Proclaims itself, through our actions, and what is real, the Force does. Today, here, to acknowledge what the Force has proclaimed, we are."
Yoda ignited Anakin's blade, though not so easily as the hilt was larger than what he was used to, and slowly and carefully brought it down above each of Ahsoka's shoulders declaring, "By the right of the council, by the will of the force, dub thee do I, Knight of the Jedi Order."
Ahsoka looked up at Yoda in astonishment and exclaimed, "A Knight?!"
Yoda replied, "Proven yourself a worthy Knight you have. Despite the wrong that we committed, still continue to fight for the light side, you do. Deserving of this title, you are."
Ahsoka stood up and went and hugged Anakin saying, "Thank You for everything Master, I owe it all to you!"
Anakin hugged Ahsoka and said, "I'm proud of you Snips! I couldn't have had a better Padawan than you!"
Yoda then said, "Finished, we are not, young Skywalker."
Anakin walked up to Yoda, wondering what was to come.
And then, Yoda looked at him and spoke, "Went against the code you did, by choosing to marry. Yet, allow this to weaken your commitment, you did not. Allow your fears to take hold of you, you did not. Refuse to join the dark side you did, using your love for your wife and children. Shown you have, that handled with discrimination, attachments can be. Henceforth, by will of the force, a Jedi Knight you no longer are. A Jedi Master you are."
Anakin could not believe his ears and he stood there, mouth hanging wide open.
A few moments later, he blurted out, "I, I'm not worthy of this position. I have done things which make me a bad Jedi. I don't deserve this."
Yoda spoke, "Appreciate your honesty and humility, I do. Grown you have, all the more reason for you to be deserving of this title."
Yoda then spoke, "A great ordeal this has all been, but before decide our next move we do, rest we must. Disperse we shall."
Just then, Anakin spoke up, "Masters, there's something I need to talk about."
Yoda's ears twitched upwards as he heard that and he spoke, "Remain here, you will. Wish for your former master to stay here, do you?"
Anakin nodded.
The others nodded respectfully and exited the room.
Only Anakin, Obi Wan and Yoda remained.
Yoda asked, "Something to say, do you?"
Anakin replied, "There's something important I have to tell you. Something terrible that happened, something terrible I did."
Obi Wan placed a hand on Anakin's shoulder and said, "Anakin, I am not going to judge you here, neither will Master Yoda, for that matter."
Yoda added, "Judge you, I will not. But open up, you must, if trust you are to develop. Trust each other, we must, if to be strong we are and rebuild the order, we are."
Anakin then knelt down and explained, "It all started with my mother. When I was taken to be trained as a Jedi, Qui-Gon was unable to free her. Three years ago…"
And with that, he explained the story of how he had travelled to Tatooine and then to a Tusken village to save his mother, how he had found her beaten and starved, how he had cradled his mother as she had died in his arms, and how finally, overcome by grief and a desire for revenge, he had slaughtered the entire tribe, even the women and children. He also explained how Palpatine had said that he had done the right thing when he had told him, how a few days before, Count Dooku had been at his mercy and Anakin had ruthlessly executed him, and how Palpatine, had once again justified such an act, comparing it to his mother and the sand people, and saying that this had been revenge for the loss of an arm to Dooku.
At the end, Anakin broke down.
Yoda placed a hand on Anakin's knee even as Obi Wan held Anakin.
A few minutes later, when Anakin had calmed down a little, Yoda spoke, "A great deal, this is. Done things you should not have, you have done. But good it is, that realized your mistake you have. Remorse, you carry for your actions. See that, I do. But the only one to make terrible mistakes, you are not. Terrible mistakes, we all have made. Ahsoka's ordeal, my fault it was. But understand your mistakes, you have, and come to be honest about them, you have. A sign, this is, of your growth."
Obi Wan said, "Anakin, first of all, I'm sorry about the way I dismissed your nightmares about your mother. If I had done more about them, none of this would have happened. What you did there was not right, but what I did was not right either. And I have experienced that rage before."
"You have?" Anakin asked, turning to Obi Wan.
"Yes, I have," Obi Wan replied, "When Darth Maul killed Master Qui-Gon, I was filled with rage. It was burning inside me. I just wanted to kill that monster for what he had done to me. Qui-Gon was like my own father. I lost him that day."
He then asked, "Do you remember Satine, Duchess Satine of Mandalore?"
Anakin nodded.
Obi Wan explained, "You see, when I was a Padawan, at one point, I was tasked with protecting her. As time went by, we grew closer, and we even developed feelings for each other. I of course, being a Jedi, decided not to pursue my feelings and instead focus on my duty. I'm not belittling you of course, don't worry about that. Anyway, the point is, she was murdered by Darth Maul in front of my eyes. It was a horrible moment! All I wanted to do was tear Maul apart for what he had done! So Anakin, I can understand your burning desire at that time to tear those who had killed your mother apart, but you should not have given in. You know it already. Palpatine at that time may have justified it, but your mother would not have wanted you to do that. But you have understood your mistake."
Anakin said, "At least you've been good at being calm. I on the other hand have not. I'm…"
"Shhh…" Obi Wan interrupted, "Don't ever degrade yourself like this. Of course you are capable of being calm. Look how much you have grown. The fact that you realized your wrongs and want to never repeat them is something. You realized Palpatine for what he was and what he did to you. If there's anyone apart from you and myself to blame, it's Palpatine. He pretended to be your friend while all this while, he was just twisting your mind. But you thought of your love for Padmé and you realized that he was using you. That decision changed everything."
Yoda said, "Grown, you have, matured you have, greatly, bordered the dark you have, but refused to let it consume you, you have. Change my decision to make you a Jedi Master, I shall not. Worthy you are of that position. A great Jedi, you have become."
Anakin said, "Masters, when I arrived on Mustafar, I saw Darth Vader choking my wife. I wanted to tear him apart. At one point, I grabbed his neck with my mechanical hand, but then I realized what I was doing. And then, when I defeated him, he slid down the slope and was burning. I wanted to watch him burn, run my lightsaber through him, but then I thought of how I had killed Dooku in cold blood. I don't know why, but I found myself pulling him up and putting out the fires. I don't know why, but I know one thing, I don't want to be a monster."
"A monster, you are not," Yoda spoke, "A monster, Palpatine is. But to hear that, glad I am. For another sign this is, that not consumed by darkness, you are, and that capable of showing mercy, you are."
Anakin said, "I don't know. Was it the right thing to do?"
Obi Wan spoke up, "Anakin, you only did what you felt was right. You had a reason, not wanting to be a monster. I'm proud of you Anakin."
Anakin looked up and said, "Thank You Master."
Yoda then looked at both of them and said, "Now, sleep, you must. Tired, you must be. If, any help, you should need, hesitate you must not, to ask us."
