The Dauntless simulation launched early. The sun was peaking over the horizon barely and Dauntless marched like machines, into Abnegation. Bella and Rosalie walked together next to Jeanine while everyone marched.
"The box that we're looking for. It's about four inches wide and sixteen inches tall. We need that box."
Bella just nodded. She kept her face impassive, like stone. "Yes ma'am."
Jeanine looked around, the lines of Dauntless marching under her command. She smiled a little and looked at Bella. "See to it you personally take care of the council."
"Yes ma'am." Bella nodded again and watched Jeanine get back in a transport and she left going back towards Dauntless to the simulation room. Bella waited a moment and then whistled sharply. Lukas and Four fell out of line and rushed across the field, ducking in through the tall grass and disappearing from sight. Bella exchanged a look with Rosalie before nodding to each other. They walked up towards the Prior house. She didn't knock, she walked inside. Andrew and Natalie were there packing things. "Mom, dad. We have about ten minutes before Jeanine makes it back to the simulation room. Then we have about maybe twenty minutes of stall time before I get the order to start executing everyone."
Andrew nodded. "Good. Johana has agreed to allow safe passage through the tunnel that leads to Amity. We already have the children heading to Amity. The people they will find in Abnegation houses are mostly factionless that are armed and ready for a fight if something goes wrong." He explained.
Bella knew that was a risky idea, but she nodded. "Alright. The box Jeanine is looking for?"
"Yes. The Founder's box. I have sent it ahead with Marissa and Pogo to take to Johana. Jeanine won't get her hands on it." Natalie said, brushing a piece of her hair back that had escaped.
"That's good." Bella didn't want anything to be left to chance. She looked at her watch. Lukas and Four should back at Dauntless by now. Or in the least, almost there. Bella felt the flutters and knew that it wasn't the babies, that it reminded her of how dangerous everything was. She needed Eric… so much and she missed having him there by her side. Every other little silly argument or thing didn't seem to matter at all. Only he mattered and the babies she was carrying.
Lukas and Four made it back to Dauntless. They crept in, knowing that there shouldn't be anyone there but Jeanine. They used hand signals as they moved around corners. When they made it to the simulation room, Four peered around the corner. He saw Jeanine standing next to Caleb as they looked at the large screens in front of them. Caleb was holding a tablet and he was hitting the screen in a specific pattern. Four realized that Caleb was the one controlling the Dauntless marching. Sending commands through the tablet into the simulation to make them all do what they wanted them to do.
"Everything is falling into place." Jeanine said, not looking at Caleb.
Caleb nodded and looked up at the screens. "It is. The box will be recovered and we'll figure out what the Founders wanted for the city."
Four and Lukas exchanged glances. It seemed that Caleb was the mole the entire time and that he wasn't on their side at all. Which meant that he was dangerous for Bella.
"Setting up Bella for all of this was a genius idea." Jeanine said now as she smiled over at Caleb. "She's your sister, yet you practice faction before blood so flawlessly."
Caleb smiled now. "Bella isn't my sister. She may have been adopted into my family, but she isn't even my blood anyways. My home is with you. With Erudite. With this faction system." He assured Jeanine.
Jeanine turned to Caleb now, bringing her hands up to frame his face. "You are so brilliant." She said in admiration. She leaned in and kissed him softly. Caleb reciprocated.
Four and Lukas both continued to frown. This wasn't going to be good. That was why Jeanine moved Bella into the Dauntless leadership beginning. Why she was there in Abnegation with the marching Dauntless army. They needed to stop Jeanine and Caleb and they needed to do it now. Lukas slipped his palm pilot from his hip. It was encrypted. They made sure of that. They knew that Caleb was capable of hacking into the system, but what Caleb didn't know is that they had their own ways of protecting their information.
C set you up. Abort mission.
Lukas sent the message to Bella and watched Caleb like a hawk to see if he could tell. There was no change in Caleb's attitude. He was just smiling lovingly at Jeanine. It made him sick in the pit of his stomach.
Bella's palm pilot pinged and she looked at the message from Lukas.
C set you up. Abort mission.
"God damn it!" Bella cursed. "Caleb set me up." She muttered.
Jeanine is gonna make it seem like you're the one.
Another transmission from Lukas came through. Bella shook her head. "Jeanine is placing the blame all on me." She looked at her parents. "Caleb really did doublecross us."
Andrew frowned. "Why would he do that? That's so out of character for him."
"It's not dad. Caleb has always been a bit more self centered than the rest of us. You didn't want to see it then, but he's doing what he wants because it benefits him somehow. He probably denies that he's Divergent." Bella spat.
Natalie swallowed and looked at Rosalie. "You two go back to Dauntless, handle this. We'll make sure the rest is handled here. The factionless know how to fight if it comes down to it."
Rosalie thought that was going to be dangerous as well, but she just nodded and put her hand on Bella's arm. "Let's go."
Bella wanted to hit something. She just hugged her parents one last time before she left their house. They moved across the back, secretly exiting Abnegation where the drones couldn't see. As far as Jeanine knew, they were still in the Prior house questioning Andrew and Natalie.
Bella and Rosalie slunk into Dauntless quietly like Lukas and Four had done before them. They found Lukas and Four outside the simulation room just waiting to figure out what to do. When Lukas saw Bella, he frowned. He didn't want her here either. Danger was everywhere. They were too exposed. But now it was four of them and it was only Jeanine and Caleb. The only downside was that Caleb was controlling the Dauntless. One wrong move then he could force Dauntless to all become murderers in one go.
Rosalie put her back against the wall and she checked her weapon to make sure the safety was off and Bella did the same.
Bella made a signal for Four to enter first with Rosalie behind him then Lukas and she would take up the rear. The best way was to surprise them and make sure that they didn't have a chance to execute any command.
Four nodded and took his place, entering the simulation room with Rosalie right behind him. Lukas followed, worried about Bella still, but he promised not to let anything happen to her.
Jeanine looked up at the intrusion and then frowned. "What's going on?" Her eyes landed on Bella. "You are supposed to be questioning the Priors right now."
Caleb's blue eyes focused on Bella. "She knows." He knew that Bella was smart. Which meant that the box wasn't in Abnegation anymore. "She knows that I've been helping you."
"Of course I knew Caleb. Do you think that I would let you murder an entire faction for personal gain?" Bella scoffed.
Jeanine shook her head. "They harbor Divergents. They are the cause for all the deception in this faction."
"Looks like the only deceptive one is you Jeanine." Rosalie said, her voice irritated.
"You're not going to win this battle Jeanine. We have everywhere surrounded."
Caleb made a hmph noise. "You forget that I control the drones?"
"Did you forget you're not the only computer whiz." Bella bluffed.
Caleb frowned and looked back at the screens, hitting a few things on the tablet.
"Don't touch another button." Rosalie said, her gun firing up ready to shoot Caleb if necessary.
"Unbelievable. Bella I insist that you arrest these barbarians. We have-"
"I don't follow your orders." Bella cut her off.
Caleb shook his head. "You're pathetic."
Bella raised a brow. "You know I would say I'm surprised that my brother turned against me, but you're not the first sibling to do that this year."
Caleb narrowed his eyes. "You mean how Tris lost Al and you killed her? For trying to do the right thing and expose Divergents?"
Bella snorted. "You don't know anything. Have you told Jeanine you're Divergent Caleb or were you keeping that to yourself?"
Jeanine looked at Caleb. "You-"
"She's lying obviously honey, she doesn't know what she's talking about. She's the one that is Divergent." Caleb cast the shadow back onto Bella.
"Really? I'm lying?" Bella said and unhooked her device that scans people to tell that they're Divergent. "Want to bet?" She had Tori reengineer the device two days ago. It lifted the blocks on there that Caleb put in place to make sure it wouldn't scan her, him, Eric and the rest of their group as being Divergent.
Caleb smiled a little. "Yes, I'll take the bet."
Bella tossed Jeanine the device. "Go ahead. Do it yourself."
Jeanine looked at the device and looked at Caleb.
"Honey… when have I ever lied to you?"
Jeanine shook her head and scanned Caleb.
85 % Divergent.
Caleb was in shock. His mouth fell as he realized that Bella set him up too. Making him walk into her trap. She was always getting away with everything. She killed Tris and got away with it. Their parents didn't know about the truth of her death and he doubted that Bella would ever tell them. Anger filled him, making him shake. He drew his own weapon and before he knew it he was aiming it at Bella, a tear in his eye as he thought about Tris. Thought about how her life had ended so abruptly and how much Bella was selfish. How she would steal everything he has worked for. He pulled the trigger.
Lukas put himself in front of Bella immediately, when he saw Caleb's finger twitch. The bullet hit him in the chest and he went down.
Bella's eyes widened as she realized that Lukas went down. She didn't hesitate as she pulled the trigger and the bullet pierced Caleb right in his skull. Caleb slunk to the floor, dead. Jeanine screamed in horror as she tossed the device and went to Caleb's side. It was a mixture of feelings. Caleb was Divergent, but she had fallen in love with him.
Rosalie's eyes were wide as she witnessed everything go down.
Four waved in front of her face. "Rose, cuff her." He instructed her to deal with Jeanine.
Bella went to the floor beside Lukas and Four right at her side. "Lukas! Lukas hang on! We'll get Carlisle and-and-and-"
Lukas was oddly calm, his body weak. Blood was pouring from his chest, and he gurgled a little.
Bella pressed her hands over the wound, her hands covered in his blood now and it was getting all over her. "Please don't do this. You can fight it. Come on." She sobbed out as she pressed tighter to stop the blood.
"Bella…" Lukas croaked. It was weak. He felt himself slipping, his body already feeling cold. "It's cold." He whispered.
"No, no, no… Lukas! Please don't go. I love you. I love you. I love you. Please… you're my brother… I can't lose you. Please Lukas, please. Your nephews are going to need you. Please!"
"Boys…"
"Yes, they're boys. I found out yesterday. The blood test came back." She sniffed. "Please Lukas. I need you so much."
Lukas smiled a little, blood leaking from the side of his mouth. "Eric… he's going to be happy."
Bella sobbed, her body shaking and she kept pressing on his chest. Four was ripping his shirt to pieces and trying to push it under her hands to help stop the bleeding. "Lukas…"
Lukas's eyes closed and his breath settled, his chest stopped moving.
Bella shook her head. "LUKAS!" She sobbed out, a horrifying sound that no one could describe escaped her as her entire body shook. She moved her hands, trying to scoop the blood back. Tears blinded her wildly as she tried to do whatever to bring Lukas back. To just bring him back so he could live again.
Four wrapped his arms around her from behind, trying to pull her away, but she fought him. He released her, not wanting to hurt her because she was pregnant. "Bella, shhh."
"Lukas! Damn it!" Bella screamed in half anger. Tears kept falling, hitting Lukas's chest and mixing with his blood. If this were a fairytale then her tears would bring him back to life, but this was reality and the reality was… Lukas was dead.
Bella sat back, looking at Lukas's body for a few long moments.
"This is ridiculous. You can't arrest me. I have to-"
Bella stood up then, the emotion shifting on her face as she walked towards Jeanine. She reached a bloody hand up and grabbed her face, the obvious disgust in Jeanine's eyes when she did. "Shut it down now."
"How dare you!"
"How dare me!" Bella roared at Jeanine and it made Jeanine flinch. "Shut it down now or I put a bullet in your skull right now." She said, her voice holding a certain level of venom in it.
Jeanine didn't doubt that Bella wouldn't do it. She watched her kill her own brother over a boy that was hardly worth it. It was clear that they were all Divergents now. Which is why she wanted to eradicate them all. Her biggest fear had come true. But she complied now. Rosalie handed her the tablet and she shut the program down and wiped it. "This won't be the last time-"
Bella raised her gun and shot Jeanine, without flinching or hesitation. Jeanine Matthews was over now. This was all over now.
Rosalie stepped back and let Jeanine's body hit the floor. She didn't flinch either when Bella shot Jeanine. She looked to the shirtless Four and saw the concern in his eyes as he looked at Bella. It was true, she was worried about Bella too. "Let's… get the Dauntless home." She suggested.
Bella was thinking about Lukas, thinking about his death and how it was her fault. All of it… her fault. But she nodded mechanically. She felt cold now, not in a dead way, but in a way that traumatizes emotion. She wasn't sure if she could come back from this.
