The bright inside of Luna's tent woke her up in the early morning. She stretched and yawned before unzipping her tent. She took a look outside and saw Zara a few yards away on the side of the mountain trail and walked towards her.
"Good morning!" Luna greeted the woman then took notice of what she was looking at, "Whoa..."
In the dark of night, it was hard to make out just how high the group had climbed, but now in the morning light, Luna could see the forest-filled view beneath them. She could make out the plaza and Pokemon Center at the base of the mountain, but she was barely able to make out the shapes of humans and Pokemon walking around down below for they looked like ants from where she stood.
"It's beautiful up here, huh?" said Zara.
Gilly walked up beside the two women and yawned, "Yeah, I guess."
"Morning!" smiled Luna.
Gilly took one look at Luna and giggled, "I love your hairdo."
"Huh?" questioned Luna.
"Dang, Red! That's why I cut most of mine off!" added Zara.
Luna took out her phone to see herself and immediately noticed her massive case of bedhead. She sighed, "I'm not sure that I want to cut it off yet... But always carrying around a bunch of shampoo and conditioner, on top of having to use them in portions is kind of annoying. But, keeping it up in a ponytail does help!"
Luna went back to her tent to fix up her hair and when she got done, Gilly was already making breakfast for the group.
"Thanks for cooking so much lately, you've been a big help!" Luna told Gilly.
Gilly was focused on not burning any of the eggs in the frying pan above the campfire, "It's not a problem! It was the least that I could do considering that you are helping me get this root."
Zara was sitting nearby and sipping a can of soda, "So you're getting this root for your class right?"
"Yeah," replied Gilly, "W-wait, where'd you get that soda from?"
Zara pointed over to Gilly's bag, "Over there."
"H-Hey! You can't just go through my stuff! And that was my last one!" Gilly shouted.
"...Thanks?"
Gilly scowled as she returned her now angry focus to burning Zara's food.
Luna tried to calm down the situation and handed Gilly a juice box from her stash.
"You don't have to do that, Luna..." Gilly felt bad for accepting her friend's drink.
"You'd do the same for me!" Luna smiled as Gilly took the drink.
"Thanks." Gilly smiled.
The three then sat down and had a mostly uneventful breakfast without bickering between Zara and Gilly. After the three finished eating, they began packing up their tents and headed back on the road up the side of the mountain.
Gilly smirked as she thought of a way to get back at Zara, "I'm sorry that you couldn't find that Noibat that you were looking for last night, Zara. It's such a shame. You must feel pretty bad as a trainer, but don't feel too bad!"
"Hmm?" replied Zara, "What'd you mean? I caught him last night."
"W-What!?" gilly blurted out, "Then why didn't you say anything last night!?"
"I don't know. I didn't think it was a big deal."
"B-But that's what you came up here for!" Gilly felt defeated, "I just don't get you."
Luna patted Zara on the back, "That's great to hear, Zara! Did you pick out a name for him?"
Zara smiled, "I think Dracula or Drac for short."
"That's a cute name, I love it! Don't you think that's a good name, Gilly?" Luna glared over at her friend.
Gilly froze seeing this look from Luna for the first time, "Y-Yeah, it's a great name!" She spoke directly, with a hint of fear in her voice.
The three made their way up the road until the ground below flattened out and they reached a grassy field, finally reaching the top of the mountain. Many large rocks jutted out from the ground. The unnatural-looking area was home to what looked to be tens if not hundreds of Sunkern and Sunflora soaking in the heat from the rising sun.
"So pretty!" Luna gleamed as she ran up onto the grassy field.
Gilly followed after her, smiling as she watched the Sunkern float in the gentle breeze above them.
The Pokemon seemed to be a bit curious about the sudden appearance of the trainers but kept their distance and watched from afar.
"Heidi, could you translate for us?" Gilly looked down at her Pokeball.
In response, her Pokeball opened and Heidi appeared from within it, she stood and stretched her arms up in the air, still yawning as she nodded.
"Thanks, sis!" replied Gilly, "If you could just ask them if they have a few spare roots lying around? I'm gonna go ahead and start sifting through the dirt to look for some in the meantime!"
Heidi took a second to fully wake up before giving Gilly a thumbs up.
"Oh, before you go!" Gilly handed Heidi the juice box that Luna had given to her earlier, "Sorry, I dropped the soda this morning, but Luna gave us this! I know you're a caffeine fiend in the morning, but hopefully, this will help wake you up too!"
Heidi nodded and smiled as she took the juice and quickly downed the drink, she shook her head, waking herself up once more. She took a deep breath and walked over to the group of Sunflora that were watching the group from afar.
Zara eventually caught up to the two human girls and helped them look through the thick layer of grass for any old Sunflora roots.
Gilly educated the girls as they searched for the root, "So, if it's too dry and easy to break, then we can't use it for the salve. What you want to look for are roots that are flexible enough to tear when you bend them but don't actually snap in half."
With her instructions, both Luna and Zara began moving their hands through the thick grass.
"Like this?" Luna picked up a dark green root that flexed as she bent it.
"Exactly!" Gilly nodded proudly, "Good job!"
Luna was overjoyed by the positive reinforcement, "Great, we can head back right!?"
"What?" Laughed Gilly, "We need at least five pounds of the stuff to correctly make the salve!"
"F-Five pounds!? We'll be here all day!" Luna immediately lost hope and sulked.
"It'll be quick! Look, you already found one. How long could it take!?"
Two hours later, the women all sat in the field looking defeated. The blanket they'd spread out held around twenty pieces of Sunflora root.
Gilly looked over to check up on Heidi and she was still standing with the large group of Sunflora, "Heidi! What's taking so long!? Do they have any loose roots!?"
Heidi smiled and waved back to her trainer and went back to talking to the Sunflora.
"E-Eh!?" Gilly was offended by getting dissed, "Was I not speaking English?" she asked the others.
"Does she usually ignore you?" asked Luna, dirt covered her fingernails and was smudged against her cheek from digging.
"Not really... Oh, here she comes!" Gilly said excitedly to see Heidi run towards them.
Heidi walked up to Gilly's back and took her notepad out and began to write.
"What's she doing?" Zara said curiously as the Medicham in front of her began scribbling.
"Heidi knows how to write in English," Luna whispered.
"Oh, makes sense." Zara seemed pretty impressed as she watched the Pokemon.
Heidi then showed Gilly the note and let her read it aloud, "They are more than happy to share some of their roots with us, but they wanted to check in with their leader before they made that decision. The bad news is that their leader is asleep right now, so they are waiting for him to wake up."
"They're waiting for him to wake up? Why can't they just wake him up for us?" asked Luna.
Gilly shrugged and turned to Heidi, "I'm guessing you already asked that?"
Heidi nodded and took the paper from Gilly to write some more.
Gilly then read it aloud to the group once more, "They said that he gets cranky when woken up early."
"S-Seriously?" Luna sighed.
Zara grunted and stood up, "I'll get him up."
Gilly raised her eyebrow, "You will?"
"Yeah." replied Zara, "I agreed to hang around until we got the roots you needed. And the roots are here. I'll wake him up, and we'll get them."
Luna looked a bit worried as she then watched the tall and brooding Pokemon Trainer walks towards the field of Sunflora, "J-Just go easy on them!"
"I'm not gonna hurt them," Zara replied plainly.
Gilly and Luna stood and watched as Zara stood in front of the Sunflora with crossed arms. She stood more than double the height of the Pokemon, and some of the Sunflora cowered as she spoke.
The two human trainers listened as closely as they could as they heard her shout out to the group.
None of the Sunflora seemed to be hostile, but many of them shivered and moved out of her way as she walked further into the middle of the large grouping.
"What's going on? Did you hear what she said?" Luna asked Gilly.
"I don't know, but she's rattling the Beedrill nest and this is gonna be good!" replied the short trainer as she adjusted her glasses to see better.
Luna rolled her eyes at her response, "I don't want her to get hurt, Gilly."
"She's a big girl! She can handle herself fine!" replied Gilly.
Zara got further and further away from Gilly and Luna, the two watched her as she stopped and then began kicking the ground in the middle of the group of Sunflora who all began to scatter from the area around Zara.
"What the heck is she doing?" asked Luna as suddenly, the ground beneath them began to shake.
"Whoa!" Gilly held onto Heidi's arm to keep her balance as what felt like an earthquake was occurring.
Out of the ground, a massive green and yellow figure pulled itself from underneath where Zara was standing and rose upwards with immense force, sending Zara flying through the air after colliding with her.
Luna gasped as she watched her new friend be flung around thirty feet into the air.
"Heidi! Catch her!" Shouted Gilly as she regained her composure.
Like a lightning bolt, Heidi dashed forwards toward Zara. And as the Pokemon Trainer began to fall back to the ground, Heidi softly caught the woman in her arms. The hold was a bit awkward with Zara being larger than Heidi was, but she managed to hold onto the human as she fell softly onto the ground and helped the trainer to her feet.
Luna and Gilly could make out what the giant figure was now that it stood tall and the rubble from its sudden eruption cleared the air. In front of the group stood a Fifteen Foot tall Sunflora, its large roots buried deep into the rock beneath it like a tree.
"What the hell is that!?" Luna asked terrified.
Gilly stood beaming, "Is that an Alpha Sunflora!? This is incredible! I haven't seen an Alpha of this Pokemon before!"
"Alpha? What the heck is an Alpha Pokemon!?" screamed Luna.
"They're an anomaly! Sometimes when a Pokemon is born, they can be born with certain DNA that can make them larger than the other Pokemon of the same species, not to mention stronger too!" Gilly explained as she took out her phone and snapped some pics of the towering Sunflora in the middle of the field.
"Rahh!" a booming roar erupted from the Alpha Pokemon. The usual happy expression planted on a Sunflora's face was replaced by an angry one on this Pokemon as it swung its giant leaf arms towards Zara and Heidi, using a Razor Leaf attack. Zara and Heidi leaped out of the way of the barrage of leaves at the last second. Zara got back to her feet and smirked as she took out her Purple Pokeball and threw it into the air.
"Viper! Let's kick some ass!" Zara shouted like a battle cry.
Heidi balanced herself, got into a defensive pose, and did her absolute best to keep her calm composure as she was screaming with joy on the inside now that she was about to battle.
Gilly smirked and turned to Luna, "You gonna join in? or what?"
"We are going to fight that thing!?" Luna stared at the giant sunflower Pokemon that was still roaring angrily. "You guys realize that it's the size of a semi-truck, right!?"
Gilly was still smiling, ready for battle, and raised her brow to Luna, looking for a response.
Luna let out a big sigh, "You two are insane... Alright," She stood back up and kissed the Pokeball in her hands, and whispered, "You can do this. I believe in you."
Luna tossed the Pokeball high into the air and Aphid, her Ledyba sprung out from his Pokeball with confidence and he was ready to go. Or at least he thought he was ready to go until he saw the Pokemon that he had to fight in front of him. The Ledyba looked back at Luna with pleading eyes.
Luna looked Guiltily back at the Pokemon, "I know... I'm sorry! But we have to try and take him down! Don't give up!"
Aphid wiped his scaredy cat tears and nodded, he pumped his arms, not wanting to look like a wimp in front of his trainer.
Luna smiled, "Atta' boy! Now go get 'em, Tiger!"
"Ledy!" said Aphid as he flew onto the battlefield to join Viper and Heidi.
The Trainer's Pokemon stood in a line together as they stared down the hulking Sunflora.
Zara put her arm out, "Viper, use Crunch!"
The Arbok speedily slithered forth. Heidi too ran forwards and kept her speed equal to Vipers as she ran to the left of the Sunflora.
"Ledyba!" shouted Aphid as shot out a swift attack.
"Flora!" roared the giant Pokemon as it used its large roots from under the ground to shoot upwards from under Viper and Heidi as they ran up together. Spears of root splintered upwards from the grassy terrain beneath them as they charged forward, one of the roots collided with Viper, but he kept on track and charged forth with increasing speed.
As Heidi and Viper got within reach, the Sunflora swung its leaf-like appendages downwards in a Slam attack toward them. Suddenly the Swift attack from Aphid landed directly in the middle of the Suinflora's face, blinding him as he made the attack downwards and causing him to miss both Pokemon.
Viper took this opportunity to use Crunch and bit down hard onto Sunflora's arm with dark energy coursing through its large snake fangs. Heidi attacked the other arm of the Alpha Pokemon and used Force Palm, slamming her hand into its arm and causing it to roar from being hit all at once.
As the two Pokemon stood still underneath its body, the Alpha Pokemon used its vines to grab both Heidi and Viper in its grasp, constricting both of them.
"Aphid, try to use swift on the vines!" shouted Luna.
The Ledyba nodded and summoned forth the star-like energy once again as he sent it flying forward, however, the Sunflora covered the two Pokemon with his leaf arms and took the brunt of the attack for himself to keep them contained.
"Fly high so his vines can't reach you!"
Aphid flapped his insect wings with immense power creating a loud buzzing sound as he zipped up into the air.
"Suun!" The Sunflora shouted as it sent his Vinewhip attack into the air, chasing after Ledyba. The Pokemon zoomed past the vines that got in his way and flew downwards towards the Sunflora's face, his tiny fists began to glow orange as he used Mach Punch, landing directly in the middle of the Sunflora's forehead. The power behind the attack sent the flower's body tipping backward as if it was about to fall flat on its back before its roots underneath him strained and it began lifting itself straight.
But as the Sunflora took time to recover, Aphid flew down and underneath the Sunflora and tackled Heidi out of its vines. Aphid flew up and over towards Viper to release him as well when he was hit with a Double-Edge headbutt as the Alpha Pokemon slammed its giant head into Aphid. The force of the attack caused Aphid's body to act like a comet and crashed into the ground, causing a small crater around where he hit the ground.
"Aphid!" Shouted Luna as she began to run onto the battlefield.
"Luna, wait!" Gilly called out as she reached to grab her friend.
Heidi attacked the base underneath the Alpha Sunflora, attacking them with various kicks and punches as she zipped around his vine attacks, making sure to not get trapped once more.
Viper used Crunch to bite through the vines trapping him and broke free.
"About time!" shouted Zara, "Get back in there! Use Poison sting!"
The Arbok let out poisonous needles spraying from its mouth that shot into the side of the Alpha Sunflora.
The wild Pokemon raged as he was attacked from both sides, feeling the full force of both attackers. It slammed its leaves onto the ground as it roared and thick tree-like roots broke apart the earth underneath Viper and Heidi. Both Pokemon were flung into the air but the underground roots and while they were helpless to move from mid-air, the Sunflora used Double-Edge on both Pokemon hurling them downwards in a similar fashion to Aphid.
The Alpha looked hurt as it huffed, but still found time for it to chuckle as he landed the attacks. Viper had crashed and created a crater-like Aphids, while Heidi created a long dirt trail as she stood her ground. She looked a bit scratched up, but the yearning for a fight still burned within her eyes as she shook off the rubble.
"Aphid!" Luna slid down to hold her Ladybug Pokemon, who was still conscious.
Aphid nuzzled his cheek against her chin as she wrapped her arms around him.
"Are you okay!?" she asked.
The Pokemon nodded in response to her question and crawled out of her arms and readied himself for battle. "Ledy!" he shouted.
"Aphid... You don't have to fight if you don't want to... J-Just know that I have your back if you do!" Luna told her Pokemon.
Aphid looked back at his trainer and smiled, he looked back towards the Alpha Pokemon, ready to take him on. A white light come from what seemed like nowhere, confusing the Ledyba as he looked around for its source. All of the sudden he felt a warmth and a surge of power from deep inside of him.
"That's my boy..." Luna began to tear up as the white light filled her eyes and she watched Aphid evolve in front of her.
Aphid jumped as he saw that he had a new body, he smirked and spread his wings for the first time as a Ledian. He stood taller than before and felt comfortable standing only on two feet now instead of six. He powered up his new wings, they hummed beautifully as they became almost unseeable. He looked back at Luna once more, she was crying now. He smiled as he jetted upwards into the air.
"Ledian!" shouted Aphid as he dashed forward towards the Alpha Pokemon.
The Sunflora was taking some of this time to recover and used Razor Leaf to attack the flying Ledian. Aphid narrowly dodged the attack as he flew above him, doing barrel rolls to dodge the plant blades that were attacking him.
"Flor!" The wild Pokemon sent his roots upwards once more.
Aphid spun in circles around the large roots that tried to ambush him, and just as one was about to collide with him, Heidi used Thunder Punch as she hit the root, causing it to move out of Aphid's way.
Aphid nodded to thank Heidi as he flew down beside her. The two Pokemon gave each other a look as if they knew what they wanted to do. Both Pokemon looked forward at the Sunflora and jetted off at the same time.
The Pokemon roared as it sent large roots crashing downwards at the Pokemon, but both were too fast for the attacks to land. Suddenly Heidi began running up the root to the left of the Sunflora as Aphid flew to his right. The Sunflora was too slow to even react before both Pokemon were mere feet from its face. Heidi used Force Palm and Aphid used Mach Punch.
Both of the attacks hit the Alpha Pokemon directly, the power of the attack sent him crashing down backward, and his roots were uprooted by the force of the combined attack. His body hit the floor with a loud rumble as he ground against the terrain. The Pokemon grunted as it tried to sit back up but fell backward and passed out.
"Holy shit! We won!?" Shouted Luna as she leaped up and down, "We won!"
Viper crawled up and out of his crater when Zara walked up to him, "We have some extra training to do, Viper. We were the weakest link in this battle..."
Her Pokemon looked down and was a bit ashamed as he was returned to his Pokeball.
Aphid flew back over to Luna who was sprinting at him at full speed and caught him in her arms and hugged him tightly, "You did so good! I am so proud of you, Aphid!" Luna squeezed her cheek against his.
She Let her Pokemon stand on the ground and was amazed at his sudden growth spurt, "Look at you! You got so tall, the top of your head reaches my chest! This is insane, Aphid!" She picked up the Pokemon once more covering his head in loving kisses.
Zara walked over to Gilly who was spraying Heidi with a Healing Potion.
"Hey, Shortstack," said Zara.
"Yeah?" Gilly rolled her eyes at the nickname.
"Your Medicham, they're pretty unique."
Gilly raised a brow, "Yeah? And?"
"She's way stronger than she looks. And she knows how to read and write... I never expected that sort of Pokemon coming from you."
"W-Was that supposed to be a compliment?" asked Gilly as she finished cleaning up Heidi's scratches. By the time Gilly turned around to face Zara she was already walking away, "What the hell?" She looked at Heidi, who shrugged back, not having an answer.
A bright red light suddenly appeared and both Gilly and Luna looked at the source. A red light encompassed the Alpha Sunflora's body as it was sucked inside a Pokeball. The Pokeball shook three times and clicked shut, Zara then walked over and picked up the Pokeball, and put it at her side.
"Oh." Gilly scoffed, "Of course, she would."
"W-What?" Luna looked confused, "You caught that Sunflora, Zara?"
Zara wiped the dirt from her shirt from the earlier attack, "Yeah, why? Is that a problem, Red?"
Luna was taken aback by Zara's almost threatening tone, "N-No! But.. Why though? Weren't they these Sunflora's leader?"
"Look, Red. It's a powerful Pokemon... People like us never really get the cha-"
"She's a bounty hunter, Luna. She's going to sell it." Gilly said plainly and coldly.
"Huh?" Luna was even more confused, "Wait... Sell it?"
Zara stopped in her tracks, "She's right."
"What? I don't understand?"
"She's a bounty hunter, Luna." Gilly glared at the tall trainer, "No wonder I didn't like her vibe."
"Look," started Zara, "I only sell powerful Pokemon like this one that could cause harm to other Pokemon and Humans."
"But why? Just for money?" asked Luna.
"Just for money?" replied Zara as it seemed to strike a very wrong chord with her, "Just money? Huh. Tell me something, Red. What exactly does money mean to you? Is it not important?" Zara began walking towards her.
"W-What?" Luna stepped back.
Zara kept walking forward, "Tell me where you grew up, Red. Because you sound pretty good off for you to say, 'just for money'."
Gilly put her hand on Heidi's shoulder and looked at her, Heidi nodded and knew to step in if something were to happen.
"I... I grew up in AcornWall with my mom. If you're trying to say I'm rich, I'm not! I had to get a job when I was sixteen to just help pay the bills when my mom was out of a job!" Luna replied defensively. She was confused as to why her friend was suddenly so aggresive towards her.
"Yeah, that's nice, Red. Well, I grew up in the slums of Wilde City, and we had no money. No money to put me through school, no money for a place to sleep at night, and no money for food. So when you say it's 'Just Money' it tells me that you never really had to struggle for it."
Zara stood in front of Luna with her hands at her sides clenched tight as she looked down at the redheaded trainer in front of her.
Luna felt her heart race as Zara intimidated her, she remembered looking up at the with admiration for the way she carried herself, but now as she looked up at her she felt, scared of her new friend.
As Gilly was about to say something, Zara backed off.
"Sorry." said Zara, "Certain things piss me off."
Luna thanked Arceus that Zara stepped away from her, she had frozen entirely. Feeling scared of her friend and feeling guilty for hurting her feelings.
"Th-that's okay!" Luna stuttered, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said anything..."
"Luna!" shouted Gilly. This caused Luna to stand up straight.
Gilly continued, "Do not let her, of all people, push you around!"
Luna wasn't sure what to say but was happy that Gilly was sticking up for her.
"Hey, Beefcake!" Gilly shouted at Zara.
Zara slowly turned to acknowledge Gilly, "What?"
"You ever talk to my friend that way again, I'll have Heidi put you in the goddamn hospital, got it?"
"Got it." Zara gathered her things and began walking away from the two trainers.
Luna calmed down a bit as Gilly stood next to her as they watched Zara walk down the mountain trail, "W-Wait..." she told Gilly, "I don't want to say goodbye like that..."
Gilly slapped her forehead and sighed, "Fine. J-Just don't say anything that'll make her hit you, I don't want to have to follow through with my promise to her so soon."
Luna smiled softly to Gilly before running after Zara who already began walking down the trail.
"Wait!" Shouted Luna as she almost tripped running down the inclined trail.
Zara stopped and turned to the trainer running after her, she had a look of shame planted on her face.
Luna felt awkward now that she was actually in front of Zara right after that confrontation, she felt her heart race as she forced herself to speak up, "H-Hey... I'm sorry for what you had to go through... And I understand that you have to do what you have to do. I don't want you to think that I'm judging you. And I-"
"It's okay, Red." Zara interrupted her, "No hard feelings, I'll see you around?"
Luna sighed and awkwardly smiled, "Yeah, you'll see me around."
Zara nodded to Luna and headed back down the trail, she held up the peace sign as she walked around the corner.
Luna felt a knot in her chest, unsure of how their friendship would go the next time they met. She turned to walk back up the trail and met back up with Gilly and Heidi who were calming things down back at the mountain peak.
Heidi grouped the Sunflora and Sunkern that lived on the mountaintop back together as they all worked hard to repair the craters made during the battle. Gilly sat carving at a large root left behind by the Alpha Sunflora.
She stood up as soon as she saw Luna approach, "How'd it go? You okay?"
"Y-Yeah." Luna scratched the back of her neck, "I think so? I hope so."
Gilly put her hand on her shoulder, "Hey if you want me to, I'd kill her. Would you like that?"
"Pfft!" Luna laughed as she pushed her hand off her shoulder, "No, crazy ass!" Luna giggled softly before quickly calming down, "I think we're good, but she kinda scared me for a second there."
"Luna, you should have been scared, she looked like she was about to deck you!"
"I don't know..." replied Luna, "I don't think she would've gone that far."
"Heidi, come tell Luna what you saw!" shouted Gilly.
Moments later, Heidi walked up to Luna and showed her a message she'd recently written on her notepad to Gilly.
The message read, "That's what I thought too. I checked her aura once she approached Luna. She was overflowing with hostility, I was amazed that she didn't attack her."
Luna sighed, "Y-Yeah, but she didn't hit me though! S-So please, don't hate her for something she didn't even do..."
"She's just lucky that the Sunflora are cool with that big guy gone now," said Gilly.
"Oh, they are?" asked Gilly.
Heidi then began writing on her pad and handed it to Luna, "They said he was a dick."
Luna giggled and fake gasped, "Oh my, Heidi! Language!"
Heidi laughed alongside her friend.
Gilly waited for the two to finish laughing, "Luna, I-I'm not so great with expressing my feelings correctly, but I want you to know that you can always talk to me about that stuff."
Luna rushed to hug Gilly, "Thanks, Gilly." She pulled back from her hug, "And the same goes for you too! You can always talk to me."
Gilly smiled and bobbed her head, "Alright... Now let's get all these roots in a bag!"
"Right!" said Luna.
An hour later the girls had two large bags hanging from their backpacks filled with Sunflora root, each of the bags filled with twenty pounds of the root.
"W-Was it really necessary to bring back this much root?"
