The two men were trying to process the papers in front of them and the events from the day. The silence was broken when they heard Colin walk into the apartment and slamming the door behind him. "What's the emergency that I needed to get over here for?" he yelled as he came into the room. He paused and looked at his friends. Seeing the tears on both of their faces he walked straight to the bar and poured himself a glass of scotch and brought the bottle with him as he sat down in a chair next to Finn. He studied the men again, something had happened, something serious based on the looks on their faces. When neither Logan or Finn spoke, he sighed and took a large gulp of his drink before asking, "so who's going to tell me what's going on?"
Neither man spoke, Finn just handing him the stack of papers in his hands. After he handed the documents to Colin he studied Logan. His face was pale and he still had tears in his eyes and dried tears on his face. Finn wondered if he now realized what an ass he had been to Rory through the years. Even after the disastrous proposal, Finn had kept in contact with Rory. They had met up for the first time about a year after the break-up when they had both been in Chicago. The Rory he saw wasn't the same woman he remembered. She was thinner, the sparkle was gone from her eyes. Over dinner she told him about the campaign trail but he never saw the excitement in her eyes. As they reminisced Logan's name was brought up and she had tensed and quickly changed the subject. It had taken another year, and a lot of tequila, before Rory told him about her side of the proposal and Finn was shocked. Logan had told them all she had said no, but to hear her tell it she had said she wasn't ready and wanted time and wanted to stay together. Rory told him she was blindsided and didn't even know Logan was thinking about marriage, he had never even mentioned it. That was the last time they ever spoke about Logan. Finn watched as Rory moved from job to job, went on the occasional date but no guy ever made it past date three. The sparkle had never returned to her eyes until he saw her about 5 years prior, she had gone to Hamburg for a conference and saw Logan. They had caught up with each other and Rory hoped that maybe they would be able to start something new. Rory spent more and more time in London with him. He really thought they might be able to work it out but whenever Rory went back to the states Logan would be photographed with different women. Finn watched as the spark slowly faded from her eyes again. He had tried to talk to Logan about it but the man wouldn't listen. The Odette happened and Rory stopped speaking to any of them for about a month and then suddenly, she reappeared and was still with Logan.
Finn knew that all the blame wasn't on Logan, Rory had her part as well. She was sheltered and always kept one foot in the world of society and the other out. While she easily fit into the society world, she was reluctant and Finn knew it was because of her mother. He often wondered how her mother had such a hold over her and if Rory ever realized the lengths she went though to appease the other Lorelai. Logan was crushed when Rory said no, he threw himself into work and when he wasn't working, he was drinking. About six months after the break-up old Logan moved out of the house with the avocado tree and into a penthouse in San Francisco. He returned to his old ways with a different woman each night. Two years later Mitchum asked him to return to HPG and he agreed as long as he did not return to the east coast. He settled in London and continued his playboy ways and then Rory came back. He calmed down slightly but when Rory wasn't in London he was in the clubs. Then he let himself get tangled into the Odette mess. Both of them were idiots and never talked about any of the important things. For two highly intelligent individuals, two gifted writers, they sucked at communication. After New Hampshire Logan buried himself in work, refusing to talk about Rory or what happened. He avoided his apartment especially when Odette was in town. He avoided the wedding planning and still refused to set a date. Finn was worried about how Logan would handle this news and what he would do next.
Colin finished reading everything threw the papers on the table causing both men to look at him. His attention was focused on Logan and there was a look of disgust on his features. "I hope you just found out about the baby. I hope you didn't show Odette this email and have her send her lawyers after a woman that you have told us repeatedly was the only one you would ever love yet have treated like shit over the years. The one woman that any of us would have gladly taken off your hands if she had even showed us the slightest bit of interest because she deserves so much better than the way your treated her. If you had anything to do with those documents, I don't care how long we have been friends, we are done."
Logan stared at Colin in shock both at his words and the look of contempt in his eyes. He then turned to look at Finn who was studying his glass intently refusing to meet his gaze. He took a deep breath trying to get his own anger under control and looked back at Colin and met his stare with his own icy glare.
"Thanks for the benefit of the doubt and for telling me what you really think about me. And so you know I just found out about the baby today. Finn saw her in a café, noticed she was pregnant, they exchanged some words and then he called me. And how in the hell do you know that is from Odette's lawyers."
Colin let out a bitter laugh, "I'm the one that's been working with them on the fucking pre-nup your supposed to sign tomorrow. The one you have had me delay as long as possible because you don't want to marry that gold-digging whore. You don't have the balls to break up with that bitch and you just go along with some stupid plan to keep the Dark Lord and the evil queen happy. You are so worried about them you screwed up the best relationship you ever had." The two men glared at each other, neither wanting to back down.
Colin broke first and reached into the bag he was carrying and pulled out a folder and threw it on the table, pictures of Odette with various men in obviously sexual situations spilled out onto the table. "I hired a PI when she kept pushing for the wedding to be moved forward and the pre-nup be signed. I had hoped to get some evidence against her to get this sham called off." He leaned over and pulled a picture out of the stack and handed it to Logan. "According to the PI Odette and this man have had the longest relationship, he is her yoga instructor, and it appears this has been going on since last spring. She had been making visits to London and staying with him."
Logan recognized the man from the picture and then moved so he could see the other pictures on the table, and a look of disgust crossed his face and he shoved them away. There were pictures of Odette with numerous men and some of the were very sexual in nature. "I need to talk to Mitchum," he finally stated and stood up grabbing his phone off the table to call the car service to pick him up. He paused before making the call and looked at Colin. "Can I take these with me?" he asked gesturing to the pictures.
"Yeah, go ahead," he replied. Then sighing he ran his hand over his face before asking, "do you want me to come with you?"
"Are you coming as my lawyer?" Logan retorted. "I don't really think I can handle your idea of friendship right now. Definitely not when you could think I could have had anything to do with those papers. Not when you think I wouldn't have done anything to be with Rory and our child. Not when you think I've treated her so badly over the years," Logan replied with a bitter tone.
"Everything I said was the truth," Colin defended and reached to the table to gather up everything. "I said what I have been wanting to say for years. Ive been trying to tell you how I felt for years but you never want to listen! Its always about…"
Finn stood up, "lets go," he stated cutting Colin off. Everything he was saying was true but there were more important things they needed to take care of at the moment. Talking about how badly Logan had screwed up wasn't as important as taking care of who was behind this paperwork Rory was served with. "I messaged my car service they should be here in a few minutes."
"Let's go," Logan replied running his hands through his hair. He never realized how badly he had treated Rory and hearing his friend voice his opinion made him feel even worse, but Finn was right. Logan could think about everything he did wrong later. At the moment he could try and handle this situation and then maybe Rory and her family would let him be involved with the rest of the pregnancy.
In silence Colin grabbed the photos and placed them back in the folder and grabbed the other documents. The three men grabbed their coats and walked out for the next confrontation of the evening. They all wondered if Mitchum had anything to do with this.
Chris watched as his daughter slept in the hospital bed. She had suffered a severe anxiety attack that had caused cramping and the doctors were afraid she would go into preterm labor. He studied her pale face and couldn't hold back the tears. She didn't deserve to be in this position again, not when she was finally feeling better and was looking forward to the last few months of her pregnancy. Well, looking forward to it as much as she could. After being released from the hospital the last time she had increased her appointments with the therapist. She knew she needed to come to terms about the baby's father not being in its life and she had to learn to deal with finding out the man she had been in love with for almost half her life was not who she thought he was. Chris knew that Logan not being involved brought back painful memories of her own childhood and Christopher not being around. But Rory tried to focus on the positive. She worked on the book and spent hours researching items she would need. Detailed lists were created with "must-have" items then other items that people recommended. All of her effort was spent trying to get things together and she was determined to not let her child ever feel anything other than wanted.
Then his thoughts drifted to Logan. Chris had spent countless hours trying to abide by Rory's wishes that he not go after Logan for being a heartless bastard. After he found out about the legal papers, he had wanted to be on the next flight to London but Rory had stopped him. To her, Logan had made his stance clear and she didn't want anyone in her child's life that didn't want to be there. Chris, Emily and Paris had all begrudgingly agreed with her and let the subject drop. They all agreed it was probably for the best to not have the Huntzberger's involved in the child's life. But from what he saw of Logan tonight… He genuinely seemed to know nothing about the pregnancy or about the lawyers that had threatened Rory with taking the baby away. This was such a mess, so many people hurt in this situation but the only one he cared about was lying in a hospital bed surrounded by machines.
After arriving at the hospital Rory was rushed back for tests and Chris was been baished to the waiting room. He immediately called Emily and told her a brief synopsis of what had happened that night. She was now on her way from Nantucket with one of Berta's cousins driving her since she couldn't get a flight out. She was ready to murder Logan Huntzberger but Chris had managed to calm her down some. Both of them were worried about the appearance of Logan in Rory's life and the possible aftermath of this reunion. They both knew how much Rory loved him and how much she regretted so much in her life that involved him. Both Emily and Chris were willing to give Logan some time to prove he knew nothing about the lawyers and prove he would step up and be there for both Rory and his child.
His next call was to Paris and he just told her that Rory had an anxiety attack and neglected to tell her the cause. When she found out Logan was involved he had no doubt that she would probably try and carry out one of her elaborate payback ideas. While the ideas were extremely creative and no doubt painful he didn't want her to start the execution of any of her ideas until they got the full story of Logan's involvement. Paris was still in New York and had already contacted the staff here and coordinated the best doctors available to ensure her friend would be taken care of as soon as she got off the phone with Chris. Paris terrified him but he was glad Rory had someone like her in her life.
The third call was to his mother Francine, she was with Gigi so Chris gave her an update and let her know he would be spending the night at the hospital. After Rory graduated from Yale a tentative relationship developed between his mother and Rory. It wasn't until she was on bedrest did the two women establish a real relationship. They had both agreed to leave the past in the past and Francine visited Rory daily. They got to know each other and while the two would never be as close and Rory and Emily were they had formed a solid foundation.
He debated on calling Lane, but he knew she would more than likely drop everything and be in Hartford. There was nothing she could do and he knew Rory wouldn't want to take her away from the twins so Chris decided he would let Rory call her the next day.
Livy had stopped by the hospital and waited with him until they were allowed to go back into Rory's room. She had brought a bag packed with Rory's laptop, cell phone, bath necessities and some comfortable clothes. While she had not worked for Rory long Chris knew that they were more like friends than an employee and employer. Chris was thankful that she was there for his daughter, not only keeping her fed but also being a friend. Rory had woken up slightly and told Livy about the present for her brother and envelope for her in her study. Rory then attempted to be commanding and ordered Livy to leave the next day like she had planned to attend her brother's wedding. There was nothing she could do for Rory while she was in the hospital. They talked for a few minutes before Rory fell back asleep. Once Livy knew Rory was asleep she told Chris about what she had heard before she had called him and what she had told Logan after the ambulance left. Livy also agreed that it seemed like he had no idea about the pregnancy or the lawyers.
Now that Livy was gone, and Rory was asleep Chris had time to think. He felt slightly bad about telling Logan not to come to the hospital. He had seemed genuinely worried at the house so with that thought Chris reached into his daughters' bag and pulled out her cell phone. He pulled up Logan's contact information and stared at the number for what seemed like an eternity before sending him a quick text to let him know the current status. Rory had suffered a severe anxiety attack; they were running tests and would probably know more tomorrow. She was resting and they would be there for at least a few more days. Chris also gave him the room number and said it was okay if he wanted to stop by.
Knowing there was nothing he could do right then he watched his daughter sleep. He was so happy that she let him be in her life now, that she was giving him a chance to be her dad. There were so many lost chances over the years, but he was always to immature to take them. Then there was Logan and Rory and their relationship. From what Rory had told him so never asked anything from Logan, just willing to take what he offered, she reminded him so much of himself. Isn't that what he had done for years with Lorelei? He took what she offered and when she was done, he disappeared to nurse his once again broken heart, leaving his daughter behind. Rory was the best and worst of both him and Lorelei. There was a lot of things that Rory had discovered about herself over the last few months. Hopefully, she could let Logan in. If she couldn't trust him to be her partner, hopefully she could let him in enough for the baby. He slowly fell asleep sitting in the uncomfortable hospital chair.
