"Yi? What's this? Looks like an opera script."
Fu Qiuning was startled by Jin Fengju's voice. She instinctively tried to cover her writing but it was already too late. Instead, she pretended to smooth out the paper as she said, "It's nothing, just a little thing written for amusement."
"For amusement?" Jin Fengju gave her a slightly sceptical glance. He picked up the piece of paper and read through the script carefully. He nodded slowly and said, "Yes, it reads like an opera script. However, it is more charming than most scripts. Yi? This paragraph is excellent."
He pointed to a few lines on the paper, "She and I were born on the same pillow, we will die in the same pit. Why did you, you of a thousand silks and ten thousand threads, ten thousand threads and a thousand skills, unable to tie Lanzhi to me, ah? I shall renew my oath to Lanzhi, Though our bodies may separate our hearts will never part."
He clicked his tongue and tsked in admiration, "Though it is like a poem yet not like a poem, a script yet not like a script, the lines perfectly express the pain of forced separation and the steadfast love of the couple."
He gently set the paper down and looked at Fu Qiuning for a moment. He said softly, "This play should be inspired by Southeast Fly the Peacocks, right? I have troubled you, are you very affected?"
Fu Qiuning did not know whether to laugh or cry. After transmigrating into this world, one of her main worries was not getting the time to practice her opera singing and losing her hard-won skills. Back in the modern world, she had been very strict with herself and would sing a whole play to herself every month or so to maintain her skills. Thanks to that rigid training, she was able to record complete operas from memory.
She had already accumulated dozens of Huangmei and Yue opera scripts as well as some passages from Kunqu operas. She was not actually proficient with Southeast Fly the Peacocks and had not been able to recall the words clearly. Who would have thought that she would receive an epiphany in a dream last night and woke up this morning with the complete script in her head? However, even more unexpectedly, she ended up getting caught in the middle of transcribing the script by this guy.
At that moment, Fu Qiuning could not help but admire Jin Fengju's grasp of the classical stories and ability to spot an opera script with just a glance. How could she dare show him the thick stack of operas she had transcribed?
She must never let that side know she could sing opera. As a transmigrator, she had no idea that even ordinary Bean Paste and Egg Yolk Rice Dumplings would attract so much attention from the Old Madam. Who knew what kind of drama knowing that she could sing opera would attract? Because of this fear of the limelight, she had been especially careful about when and where she practised these familiar lines.
"The Young Marquis thinks too much, emotionally affected? These are lines I had once heard an old granny sing back at the village where I grew up in. I thought the words were not bad and would record them now and then whenever they occurred to me. As Lord Husband said, it is like a poem, yet not like a poem, like a script yet not like a script. I've drawn your ridicule for no reason."
With that, Fu Qiuning casually threw the script onto the table. Naturally, she dare not shut it into her drawers. Inside were a few hundred pieces of paper, all covered with opera scripts. These pieces of paper being the result of her blood and sweat aside, if Jin Fengju happened upon them, she really didn't know what she should do.
Luckily, Jin Fengju also did not seem to care. He looked out the window, smiled and said, "The trees outside are very nicely arranged. How strange, with your identity, though you are not a di-born daughter of a noble family, you are still Prince Zhengjiang's shu-born daughter. Surely these things should be beyond you?"
Fu Qiuning laughed, "What, the trees? I cannot claim credit for them. They were already here when we arrived. All they needed was a bit of care. Though I am indeed a s
hu-born daughter of Zhengjian Palace, I am not completely ignorant. I did live in the village for a while and learned some skills there. That's right, Lord Husband appeared to have napped very well this afternoon. Did something happen? Had the past two days been tiring?"
Jin Fengju nodded and stretched up his arms again, sighing, "For the past few days, I have been assisting the Ministry of Justice with a corrupt official. Aih! I'm really tired of all these disturbances. If only I can stay quietly in your courtyard for a few days, that would be really blissful. However, with things happening in court and at home, there was no place to escape all these disturbances." He turned to look at Fu Qiuning. The smile on his face became a little strange as he said, "Do you know who what corrupt official is? Have you heard of the name Zhang Shaoyan?"
Fu Qiuning frowned and said, "This name sounds familiar, but I can't remember it. How strange, why is Lord Husband speaking to a woman like me about this? You should know that I won't understand anything about it."
Jin Fengju laughed and said, "Have you truly forgotten? Zhang Shaoyan is Zhenjiang Palace's most loyal dog. Your father and grandfather regarded him as their right-hand man. Now that I have cut him off, who knows how much hate they harbour against me. Qiuning, tell me, did I do the right thing?"
Fu Qiuning smiled, "Lord Husband's words are getting stranger by the moment. What do you wish to hear me say? Do you wish to see me shaken by such news? How funny, even if Zhang Shaoyan and the Zhenjiang Palace are related, how is that relevant to me? If Lord Husband wishes to know whether it is the right thing to do, I could at least furnish an answer to this question.
If this Zhang Shaoyan was indeed unforgivably corrupt, you did the right thing. If this person was an upright official and had been falsely accused, he would be a victim of political turmoil, Lord Husband's action would not have been right and you would have to face your own conscience for it. Aside from this, this humble woman has no other opinion."
Jin Fengju's smile froze on his face. For a long time, many different emotions flashed through his eyes. Suddenly, he reached forward and grabbed Fu Qiuning's hands. His voice was very deep and solemn, "Good Qiuning, from your words, I can tell that you are a close confidant of mine. These very words are not something just anyone would be able to say. Had I truly wrongly accused Zhang Shaoyan, the people surrounding me would only have songs of praise and tides of flattering words for me. Only you… only you… would speak straight from the heart like this. What a pity that you are born a woman. If you were an official, you would be the pillar of my Great Ning Dynasty…" he seemed very excited, so much so that his words became somewhat incoherent.
This time, Fu Qiuning really laughed out loud. She shook her head and said, "Lord Husband, enough with these jokes. What insight are you speaking of? Even a commoner could draw the same conclusion given the same information. I am but a mere woman. Perhaps one who is a little bolder and more straightforward than most others, to dare say such things to you.
You say that I am different from those flatterers and singers of praises. However, aside from speaking the truth, what other strengths do I have? A pillar of the Great Ning Dynasty? If the Ning Dynasty depended on me as a pillar, I'm afraid the country would perish soon after. It is good to speak the truth, but it did not mean I have the skills to govern a country."
"The one who knows himself is wise." Jin Fengju nodded seriously. "You being able to say this, for a woman, is already considered rare."
Che, what typical male chauvinism. Fu Qiuning privately sniffed: What's wrong with being a woman? Some women have better insights than most of you men.
However, instead of speaking out, she lowered her head to indicate modesty when Jin Fengju said, "What should I do? I am now a little regretful. I should never have promised to remain as friends only with you back then."
Pang!
Fu Qiuning's heart jumped and she quickly took a step back. She raised her head and said with all seriousness, "Young Marquis, it is not wise to make these kinds of jokes. It does not suit your status."
Seeing her so guarded against himself, Jin Fengju experienced a sense of loss in his heart. As someone with excellent looks, outstanding talent and a favourite of the emperor, he had lost count of how many boudoir girls had yearned for him. Even now, many of the matchmakers that crossed the marquisate threshold came with proposals of marriage to him. Even famous ladies indicated that they would be happy to settle as his concubines.
Back then, he feared that Fu Qiuning would develop feelings and cling to him unnecessarily due to his increased visits to Night Breeze Pavilion. However, who would have thought that the other party had really achieved enlightenment and was able to maintain a heart like stagnant water while he was the one plagued by racing hearts and a quickened pulse? Unexpectedly, today's little test of her feelings was slammed by outright rejection. How could this not make him embarrassed?
Jin Fengju's fan instantly flashed up. The fan waved in a dignified manner as a sarcastic smile crossed his face, "Look at you, I was just teasing a little, but already you're all frightened. Do not worry, although I am not the emperor, my word still carries some weight. I shall never backtrack on what I have promised you. Speaking of which, do you know why I am telling you this?" He lightly and skilfully switched the subject.
"This humble woman is also curious, why would the Young Marquis mention this for no reason? Moreover, you are from the Hanlin Academy, so why would you involve yourself with the Ministry of Justice's affairs?" In fact, Fu Qiuning knew perfectly well why Jin Fengju had told her all this. He was indirectly telling her that the favour enjoyed by Prince Hong was dropping like the setting sun. With Zhang Shaoyan disposed of, Zhenjiang Palace would also take a hit. To enjoy her precious peace in the future, she had no choice but to rely on Jinxiang Marquisate.
"No reason, I brought it up as a random conversational topic," Jin Fengju studied Fu Qiuning's expression and knew that she had already caught the underlying messages he was trying to give. However, she still wore a modest expression and did not say more than she ought to know. He also did not waste his words on more nonsense, saying instead, "Although I am officially stationed at Hanlin Academy, I am also the Sage's Sword. I am obligated to deal with matters as His Majesty sees fit. Everyone thinks that I go off now and then to enjoy unlimited sightseeing, but in fact, it is also quite tiring.
Enough about that, let's not dwell upon these dull things. I believe they should be done with the dates in the kitchen by now. I will take Feng'er and Jiao'er out in a while. We shall be back for dinner, and after that, let's view the Osmanthus flowers under the light of the moon."

The night had grown deeper. Though it was not yet the 15th [1], the weather was fine enough that there was plenty of moonlight to light up the garden.
Placed under the sweetly-scented osmanthus trees of Night Breeze Pavilion were several rattan chairs. Jin Fengju, Fu Qiuning, Aunt Yu and everyone else were seated together, enjoying various snacks while chatting and telling jokes to each other. As for Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, the children were playing and running about with two small lanterns. The lanterns were exquisite glass lamps brought over by Jin Fengju on the same day. The surface of the glass was painted with flowers, birds and even human figures, looking very sweet and lovely.
"It will be Mid-Autumn Festival in a little more than a month. We should take this opportunity to collect the osmanthus flowers and pickle them in sugar to make osmanthus cakes," Fu Qiuning instructed Aunt Yu as she waved a small, round Qingluo fan [2] at herself. The cloth on the fan was thin and exquisitely embroidered. Though there were no chemical insecticides or insect repellents in ancient times, the wisdom of the ancients could not be underestimated. After their evening bath, everyone rubbed down their bodies with some kind of faintly scented oil that somehow discouraged mosquitoes from coming three feet to them. It was much better than those potentially dangerous and smelly mosquito repellents or sprays.
Fu Qiuning did not recall seeing such essential oils in modern times. She had no idea whether the formula was lost or that the ingredients needed had become extinct. Regardless, she was thankful for the oil. She, who had always been plagued by mosquitoes and insects each summer in her previous life, no longer hated summer ever since coming here.
"Still want to make your own osmanthus cake? There are plenty at the marquisate, if you like, I shall have someone send a large box over tomorrow," said Jin Fengju through a mouthful of crisp and juicy pear.
"The ones made in the marquisate may not be as tasty as ours…" Yu Jie laughingly interjected from the side. Fu Qiuning quietly stepped on her foot.
"Really? Is your osmanthus cake extraordinarily delicious? Do you have some secret recipe for it?" Unfortunately, Jin Fengju's interest had already been hooked. He leaned forward and urged Yu Jie to continue. However, when he caught Yu Jie looking nervously at Fu Qiuning, he grunted and said, "Good girl, be brave and don't be like your Madam who guards against me like a thief. It's just some small thing, but you are still unwilling to let me know. As if I would steal all your food away. Who do you think backs you up in this marquisate? Who gave you all this food and clothing? Really, this is a great example of returning good deeds with a grudge."
If not for the sake of maintaining this dog shit ladylike appearance, Fu Qiuning would have flipped over the plate of snacks on the table into Jin Fengju's face: Curse this bastard! Did he think that everything he sent over was eaten by me? Did your children eat none of it? From the day you stepped into Night Breeze Pavilion, just how much of my food have you eaten? Fine then, eat, eat as much as you like and explode, but this bastard even forced me to give away my food to other people. Otherwise, why would I be afraid?
As for this Yu Jie, her eyes were nothing but holes in her head, only caring about momentary satisfaction and bragging about our osmanthus cakes to this black hole. Good, very good. Just wait and see how many more cakes we'll have to make this autumn. I'm sure you will be very happy to make all those extra cakes? Also, as the one who blabbed about it so proudly to the world, she must be given the pleasure of personally sending all these delicious cakes to each and every one of those wives, concubines and in-laws. After receiving snubs from all those random women, let's see if she still dares to flap her mouth rashly.
Her heart was filled with angry thoughts, but her face was still as a mirror. She could only turn her face to the side and listen as Yu Jie excitedly waxed on and on to Jin Fengju about how fragrant and delicious their osmanthus cakes were.
In her past life, Fu Qiuning had lived in Suzhou and enjoyed eating. She had done some research on various dim sum and snacks. After transmigrating, even though she did not have any precise recipes, having access to natural and organic ingredients meant that nearly everything she made was exceptionally tasty.
As expected, thanks to Yu Jie's blabbing, Jin Fengju's interest was piqued. He turned to Fu Qiuning, "When will you make the osmanthus cakes? Send Yu Jie to inform me, I want to have them hot and fresh. That's right, Old Madam mentioned that she wished to come to your place for a stroll. How about we set a day when the sweet potatoes are ready? After a stroll, Old Madam could also taste some freshly steamed sweet potatoes from your backyard."
"Don't." Fu Qiuning was shocked, "Whether it is osmanthus cakes or other things, we can send them to her. However, we are a whole garden away from Health & Longevity Court, surely it would not be good to bother the Old Madam? If she loves sweet potatoes, I can have them steamed and immediately send them over while still hot."
Jin Fengju put away the folding fan, helplessly saying, "I said the same thing to her. The moment she arrives, all manner of peace and quiet would be gone, and a whole group of people would follow over. It would attract more than a few pairs of eyes too. However, from the Old Ancestor's intention, I don't think she will give up. When the time comes, I'll have to trouble you,"
Fu Qiuning frowned and said, "I'm not afraid of being troubled, I'm more afraid of getting bullied."
At this, Jin Fengju laughed dispassionately. He lowered his voice and said, "Bully you? I know that there will be a few who are eager to step on you, but Qiuning, there's no need to speak of such dark things before bright people. A person who is capable of bullying you doesn't exist in this marquisate. I know, back then, I promised to keep you out of the inner court because you do not wish to involve yourself in the disputes.
On the other hand, if Old Madam gets involved, I'm afraid I may not be able to keep that promise. Then again, you should also consider this. Even if Old Madam comes to visit, at worst, you will only be disturbed for a few days. You should also be sensible enough to understand the situation and seize every opportunity without falling into anyone's plots. Surely a few days of inconvenience is better than me having you move into the inner court and be faced with those troubles every day, right?"
Since he put it that way, Fu Qiuning could only reluctantly agree. She thought: So long as I don't have to enter the inner court, it's fine. For the rest, if it cannot be forced, there's no need to force it.
In the end, she still needed Jin Fengju's shelter, therefore, she could not be overly insistent on certain things.
It was a happy scene at the Night Breeze Pavilion. In contrast, Clear Soft Pavilion appeared that much colder and lonelier.
"Is Lord Husband resting at Night Breeze Pavilion tonight?" Jiang Wanying asked casually as she slowly removed her makeup in front of the mirror.
"Yes, Jin Ming came over this afternoon to inform us that the master will be resting at Night Breeze Pavilion," Qiu Xia collected the accessories on the dressing table one by one and put them away. Catching sight of her mistress' expressionless face, she comforted in a low voice, "There's no need for Madam to be sad. The master spends more than half a month at our place…"
"Of course, I know this," Jiang Wanying sneered. With a wave of her hand, she snapped, "There's no need for you to comfort me. I understand that even if he was not at Night Breeze Pavilion, he would not be in my room either. Right now, I believe Concubine Xu's hatred is even worse than mine. Lord Husband only visits her place five or six days a month. Today, it was finally her turn, but then it was snatched away by Night Breeze Pavilion."
Qiu Xia smiled and said, "Isn't it true? This maid just went by Fragrant Dew Court and heard Concubine Xu scolding one of the maids. I believe someone was being beaten too. Clearly, her anger was not light. It's better not to start trouble with Night Breeze Pavilion, otherwise, our heads would be broken in."
Jiang Wanying nodded with a little smile, "You have a vivid way with words. In fact, I have always been curious. No matter what, she is the daughter of a Fourth Rank official. Just how did she come by her shrewish attitude?" She stood up from her chair and sat down slowly on the bed. She turned to Qiu Xia, "Where is the Young Miss and Young Master? I haven't seen them all day. They only know how to play wildly outside."
"Mother is wrong, who is playing wildly outside? I've returned long ago and have been studying since." A child ran in, his face gleaming with sweat and one hand clenched closed around something.
"Well, well, if this is studying and not playing, I wonder what's that in your hand?" Jiang Wanying pretended to scold her son but her face was wreathed with smiles as she looked at her little son tenderly.
"It was caught by Shuang De this afternoon. He tied up its wings. I really didn't go out and play. I only took it after I finished reading a book. If Mother doesn't believe me, look. Its wings are still tied up [1]," Jin Zhenxuan held up his hand to show the cicada to Jiang Wanying.
"Honestly, it's all true, I can be little brother's witness. He has been studying all afternoon." Eldest Young Miss Jin Xiuzhen also came through the door, a folding fan fluttering in her hand. She complained, "It's still fine during the day but why is it so hot now?"
"Qiu Xia, go and fetch the watermelon from the well and cut it open. Bring the sour plum soup that we simmered yesterday too," ordered Jiang Wanying. She smiled at Jin Zhenxuan, "If it is as your sister said, and you've been studying all afternoon, Mother is happy to hear that you have become sensible. My children, ah. You must also struggle for Mother's sake. Look how angry your father became when you were too playful and unwilling to study. As for Night Breeze Pavilion, could those things even be considered your elder brother and sister? Pei, those are merely bastards squeezed out by a cheap slut. How could they be compared to you? However, just because they happened to study a little… well, you've seen it yourself. Your father gifted the dragon phoenix jades to them. If you still do not grow up, do you think Mother will have a foothold in this estate?"
"That's right, don't worry, Mother. Your daughter and my little brother understand," Jin Xiuzhen said coldly. "Who knows just how many eyes are fixed upon Mother? Now, even a low-ranking, immoral and despicable woman has delusions of competing against Mother for favour. Isn't it all because of those cheap bastards from Night Breeze Pavilion? Back then we were unaware of their tricks but now that we do know, we will not let them live well. Didn't father said that he has invited a great scholar for our education? [1] Daughter has already discussed with little brother, we will study properly."
Jiang Wanying nodded with relief and smiled, "Good, good, this is very good. The most important thing is that the two of you are sensible and understand what's transpiring. It's all fine if Mother suffered a few grievances. However, Zhen'er, there's no need for you to worry about doing your best in the Confucian classes. You are a girl and will have teachers for the four arts. You should pay attention to music, chess, calligraphy and painting as well as other womanly arts. Whether you can marry a good man in the future will depend on your ability with these arts."
"What is mother saying? [1] Naturally, it is only right for your daughter to worry. How old am I? There's no need for Mother to worry about me. This daughter shall not marry and stay home with Mother forever,"
Jin Xiuzhen was only six years old, but already knew what it meant to be shy. However, she still spoke with a young girl's coquettish attitude.
"Yes, yes, yes, I shall not speak of it anymore. No matter what, so long as you are willing to strive for Mother. Mother is not afraid. Mother will be afraid of nothing." At this, Jiang Wanying's voice hardened. With a hint of viciousness, she muttered, "It should Mid-Autumn soon? That scholar should be here just around that time, right? Well, very good. It is all very good."

The next day, Jin Fengju got up early and went to court. Because there was nothing for him to do at Hanlin Academy, he took a leave of absence from the academy custodian. The custodian also knew that though Jin Fengju was officially attached to the Hanlin Academy, he was not obligated to run errands for them. There were no orders from the emperor either, so Jin Fengju was free to leave.
Upon returning home, he had just entered his study when a low-level maid from Jiang Wanying's courtyard called Dong'er entered and bobbed a salute at him. She said, "Young Marquis, the Madam has invited you for a visit. She said she has something to discuss with the Young Marquis."
"What can it be? It's too early to discuss preparations for the Mid-Autumn Festival, moreover, she has always been the one in charge of all these things," Jin Fengju wondered.
Dong'er smiled, "How could this maid know? Would not the Young Marquis know if you speak with the Madam?"
Thus, Jin Fengju had no choice but to follow Dong'er to Clear Soft Pavilion. When he arrived, he found Jiang Wanying dressed in a homely water-coloured long gauze dress with only a single golden phoenix buyao [2] in her hair. She looked both benevolent and dignified. When she saw him, she smiled and said, "I have just sent Dong'er to find you, but did not expect Lord Husband to arrive so soon. Well? Did the emperor not send you out for some errands?"
"How could there be so many things to do? There are many courtiers at court, I am hardly the only one," Jin Fengju smiled and sat down in a chair. "Speak, you say you have something important to discuss? To call me over for discussion when you have always made all the household decisions, what could the matter be? You've never been interested in outside matters either,"
Jiang Wanying smiled and said, "I have not called Lord Husband for anything serious. This morning, a servant brought a letter for Lord Husband. From the handwriting, I could tell that it was from Wu San'er. I remembered that Lord Husband mentioned something about sending Wu San'er to pick up that great scholar. I speculate that this letter must be related to that matter. I was about to have a servant take this letter to Lord Husband when a thought occurred to me. I thought I had better invite Lord Husband to come to sit and have a little talk and see if it is feasible."
As she spoke, Jin Fengju had already opened the letter and taken a look at its contents. After reading, he smiled and said, "Wu San'er is very quick on his feet and efficient with his work. He and the great scholar are on their way here. It is estimated that they would reach the city in half a month, so long as they do not encounter any difficulties. That's right, you mention that you wish to speak to me about something. What is it?"
Jiang Wanying smiled, "I am thinking of Elder Sister's two children. They have only studied by Elder Sister's side and have never attended the clan school before. Since Lord Husband said they have good prospects, how about letting them join the clan school too? After all, it is not easy to invite such a great scholar to teach the children, how could Elder Sister's teaching be compared? What does Lord Husband think?"
Once she was done speaking, Jin Fengju looked over. Under his penetrating gaze, Jiang Wanying's heart jumped and the smile on her face grew brighter. A long while later, she heard her husband chuckle, "That is a very good thought, I too have similar views. To think that Wanying is such a benevolent person and shared the same opinions as I. We shall proceed as you have suggested."
"How could your words be so heartless? What 'benevolent person'? Are you saying that after so many years of being husband and wife, you secretly thought of me as a stingy and jealous woman?" Jiang Wanying humphed and turned away. She sneered, "To be frank, if I truly was a jealous woman, would your inner court be so peaceful? The little concubines in Cousin's inner court all like to pick fights. If I truly was a jealous woman, would I have endured all these years? As for Fu'shi, I pitied her for having been banished away to that remote Night Breeze Pavilion and could not bear to ruin the future of those two children. That is why I brought the matter up. To hear you say something like this, as though I am deliberately trying to appear like a good person in your presence and faked some good deeds…"
"Aren't you overthinking matters a little? I just said it casually, is it really worth being angry over it?" Jin Fengju walked over to Jiang Wanying. He picked her up and placed her on his lap, "Don't worry, my cousin is very good. I know this well. Otherwise, after so many years, how is it that only you receive my wholehearted love?"
"Your wholehearted love?" Jiang Wanying's smile was very charming. She extended a long finger and poked his chest. "My dear Lord Husband, there's no need to coax me with such sweet words. I might just be coaxed into working even harder for the Marquisate. Even though it's all just words. Speaking of which, enough about those concubines, let's talk about Elder Sister. She must have taken very good care of you last night? When you were there, did you still remember who I was? I'm afraid you must have completely forgotten about me."
"Look at you, I just know you're feeling suspicious again," Jin Fengju smiled helplessly at her as he reached for Jiang Wanying's clothes. "I have said this to you before, I visited Night Breeze Pavilion not for the beauty, but for the children. Why do you still not believe me? If you are still suspicious, why don't you test my strength now, see if I've wasted any energy last night."
"Go away, humph, what time is it now? Still so sticky," Jiang Wanying slapped playfully at Jin Fengju's hand. Although her mouth was filled with sharp words, her heart was sweet. After some thought, she still felt a little dissatisfied. Therefore, she leaned in to whisper in Jin Fengju's ear, "If you truly have a clear conscience, why don't you come to my room tonight and let me properly test your strength? How about it? Do you dare?"
"How could I not dare? In fact, if you wish to test me now, I have no problems," Jin Fengju took the opportunity to kiss her and, after a token struggle, Jiang Wanying became drunk with happiness.
Just then, Jin Zhenxuan's voice shouted from outside, "Where's Father? Qiu Xia, is Father here?"
The two quickly separated. Jiang Wanying touched her lips and hurriedly checked her rouge in the mirror. She hissed at Jin Fengju, "Did I not say that this is not the time? How naughty, luckily Zhenxuan shouted first, otherwise, if he just barges in…"
As soon as she said this, Jin Zhenxuan really dashed into the room.
"Xuan'er, didn't the teacher inform you before? Before entering your parents' room, you must greet them from the outside first and wait for permission before entering," Jin Fengju said with a cough of embarrassment. Jiang Wanying's lips pursed up with amusement as she watch him scold his son.
"Father, what happened to the pair of white jade lions in your study? I went to look at them today but they're gone," Jin Zhenxuan had always relied on his parents' identity and had grown up willful and arrogant. He did not care much about anything that did not concern him, even dared to grab Jin Fengju by the shirt and question him.
"White jade lions? Why did you suddenly think of them? I have already given them away a few days ago," Jin Fengju replied vaguely.
Jin Zhenxuan froze in place. Suddenly, he plopped onto the floor and began to bawl, "How can they be given away? I asked and asked, but Father refuse to give them to me. Who is better than me? How could you just give them away? Didn't father say they were bestowed by the emperor and cannot be given away carelessly? I don't care, father, you must get them back, go get them back…"
Helpless, Jin Fengju could only pick him up and say, "Things that had been given away cannot be taken back. If you like, Father still has plenty of other good things. So long as you study hard, cultivate your virtue, and excel in your studies, Father will give you whatever you like. Right now, studies aside, even your character is a bit lacking."
"He's the youngest of 6 children, what virtue should he cultivate? Do you want him to become an old sage?" Jiang Wanying hugged her son close and said, "There, there, don't cry. Listen to your father and study hard. In the future, when your studies have improved, Mother will help you pick out some good things. Father will definitely let you have whatever you picked out,"
Hearing his mother backing him up, Jin Zhenxuan finally smiled and nodded. He thought for a moment and said, "I don't care about the white jade lions anymore, I want a pair of green jade lions."
Jin Fengju nearly fell off his chair and said exasperatedly, "What's this obsession over lions? What's wrong with tigers? I have a green jade parrot, I can give that to you if you like."
Jiang Wanying also laughed, after speaking a few more words to Jin Fengju along the lines of 'Xuan'er has been working really hard these few days', she finally allowed him to leave Clear Soft Pavilion.

In a blink of an eye, half of a month went by, and Mid-Autumn Festival was around the corner.
The weather happened to be bright and sunny, therefore Fu Qiuning said to Aunt Yu and Yu Jie, "I think it's time to dig out those sweet potatoes. The Young Marquis has been talking about them all the time. Also, we should steam some to be sent to the Old Madam and the other courtyards. Let us not delay."
Yu Jie fully understood her intentions, smiled and said, "I believe Madam is not really eager to let the Young Marquis taste the sweet potatoes, but is more afraid that the Old Madam would come looking for them, right? Once we have sent the sweet potatoes, the Old Madam would lose the excuse to come to Night Breeze Pavilion. Is this maid correct?"
Aunt Yu also smiled, shook her head and said, "Yu Jie really is the roundworm in our Madam's stomach [1]. So, this is the true reason. To think that this maid was still in the dark, unclear about Madam's mind."
At this, Fu Qiuning pinched Yu Jie's cheek, in a slightly miffed voice, she said, "Since you are the roundworm in my stomach, then go back to my belly and stay there quietly. Why take on a human form and fight with me?"
Just then, the Jin twins ran over and she called to them, "You can study a little later, come help us dig up some sweet potatoes first. I just hope that your father won't suddenly drop by today. Otherwise, if he sees you working with your hands, he'll be unhappy again."
"Father will not be angry with Mother. Father treats Mother very well each time he comes here, "Jin Changjiao answered mischievously. Compared to his lively sister, Jin Changfeng has a calmer and steadier disposition.
"Any more nonsense out of you, and I'll have you beaten," Fu Qiuning really could not bear this topic and was unusually fierce with her words.
Jin Changjiao was a little frightened by Fu Qiuning's anger and dare not say anything more. Privately, however, she felt that her mother was being very unfair. She thought: Father treats Mother so very well, why is Mother still not happy? Mother should also treat Father nicely, so that Father will visit more often, ah.
This child only knew that she wanted to be close to her father and was unaware of the complicated twists and turns of the whole matter.
And so, the five people went out to the backyard. They had just collected their tools when the front yard became noisy. Fu Qiuning, Aunt Yu and the rest looked at each other, dropped their tools and rushed through the house and looked out the front door, just in time to see a large group of people spilling into their front yard. The unexpected guests were standing around, pointing at the greenery, gesturing at the vegetables, talking and laughing with each other.
"Why is the Old Ancestor here?" Fu Qiuning, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu came down the steps to give their salute. Fu Qiuning respectfully said, "This humble woman had no idea that Old Ancestor would be coming by. We have erred in not welcoming you. We deserve death."
Before she could go on, Old Madam Jin helped her up. The Old Madam laughed and said, "The fault is not yours. I did not even let Fengju know that I was coming today, so how could you know?"
Beside her, Granny Ming Yu laughed and said, "Old Ancestor got up early this morning and felt quite energetic. Seeing how sunny and splendid this autumn morning is, she suddenly felt very cheerful and decided to pay a visit. Knowing that the sweet potatoes would be dug up these few days, she hoped to come and join in the fun."
Fu Qiuning quickly smiled and said, "It's only a few sweet potatoes. How could I bother Old Ancestor to come? This humble woman ought to send it over personally."
Old Madam Jin laughed and said, "I was just afraid of just this! Well? From the way you are dressed, I believed you are about to set out for work? In this season, only the sweet potatoes have yet to be harvested. The corn I had last time tasted better than the ones brought from outside. I do believe that the sweet potatoes here would be sweeter too."
Fu Qiuning laughed and said, "We had plenty of rain this last two years, therefore sweet potatoes were not as sweet. As there's less rain this year, the potatoes are likely to be sweeter." As she spoke, she went to Old Madam's side and together with Luo Cui, escorted Old Madam up the steps.
Old Madam stood at the second entrance and surveyed the neat-looking buildings within the courtyard along with their well-kept surroundings. She said emotionally, "You have managed this yard very well, it must have been hard for you to manage this desolated place while bringing up children too. Moreover, this place has seen death, are you not afraid?"
Fu Qiuning smiled, "When this humble woman first came here, this humble woman was quite depressed and flustered. However, as time went on and nothing happened, this humble woman naturally became less afraid. Not to mention, this humble woman is accompanied by quite a few people. Feng'er and Jiao'er were three years old when they first arrived. To be honest, their presence supported me through the years and as we all slept together at night, it is very peaceful here."
Old Madam Jin nodded. She sighed and after a long while, said, "Go on then, lead the way into the house. I wish to have a look." After stepping through the threshold and touring the grand hall twice, she finally sat down in the living room with a frown. "Why is Fengju so inconsiderate? Certain things should be carried out, even if only for the sake of face. No matter what, you are his official wife, but look at this place, there is not a single thing that is fit for the eyes."
"Do not blame Lord Husband for being uncaring, this humble woman was the one who begged him not to bring those things here. It is also done so that the two children would continue to understand the joy and sorrows of the world. It was not easy for their ancestors to earn the family wealth, and therefore, they should not be allowed to be spoilt and not work hard for their future." Was Fu Qiuning's humble reply. Old Madam nodded along approvingly.
"Old Ancestor, please rest here. Have a cup of tea and some snacks. This humble woman shall go to the backyard and dig out those sweet potatoes. They will be steamed for Old Madam's enjoyment," said Fu Qiuning as she received the tea tray from Yu Jie and set it in front of Old Madam Jin.
"Why should you personally work when there are so many people? Today, I have personally brought them to help you," Old Madam said with a smile as she sipped her tea. The maids and grannies behind her all looked at each other with wide eyes. Each one of them stroked their palms, clearly thinking that this must be some interesting job and were all itching to try their hands on it.
Fu Qiuning sucked in a breath of cold air and thought: My heavens, ah. Can my sweet potatoes bear your rough treatment?
Instead of voicing her thoughts, she said, "How can I? Old Madam's maids and grannies are all such genteel people who carefully serve their masters. Not a single one of them has touched rough farm work since young. Apologies, but, such crude farm work has its own finesse. The sweet potatoes are delicate, and though digging them might sound simple, there are still some intricacies involved.
Sweet potatoes that are wounded can rot easily and lose their taste. If a pitchfork pokes through one of them, well, there are only so many sweet potatoes in the ground. Old Madam, please rest comfortably. We shall return very soon."
Hearing Fu Qiuning's plea, the Old Madam no longer insisted on making her maids take part. The servants looked disappointed, all staring at Fu Qiuning, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu as they left. The two siblings, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, were sensible enough to read the atmosphere and knew that they could not participate in the 'crude work' or risk earning a harsh reproach for their mother. Instead, they sat down to entertain the Old Madam, and from time to time, the Old Madam's uproarious laughter could be heard.
It was during one of these bouts of laughter that the children stood up together to say, "Great-grandmother, it is time for us to study. We still have 20 big characters to study and 1 essay to memorize today."
Old Madam Jin replied joyfully, "Good children, it's rare to see such diligence in young children. Go on now." Thus, the children bowed before leaving the living room together.
"Old Ancestor, didn't you say that you're afraid of causing trouble for Fu'shi? Which is why you do not wish to show any intimacy, not even by summoning her to chat with you? Yet, why have you come here with such fanfare? Back then, when you suggested coming here to the Young Marquis, this old servant thought you were merely speaking in jest."
The rest of the maids and grannies had all gone to the backyard to watch Fu Qiuning dig up sweet potatoes, and perhaps to offer some help not directly related to digging. Therefore, there were only two senior maids left in the room, Luo Cui and Cai Yun. These two had grown up before Old Madam Jin's eyes and were her most trusted maids. Therefore, Granny Ming Yu could not help but broach this subject which had puzzled them for a long time.
Old Madam Jin slowly lifted the lid of her teacup and smiled slightly. "Before, I did not wish for her to enter the inner court, and therefore did not try to get close to her. If all she wanted was a few peaceful years, how could I not grant it? Why should I disturb the tranquillity of this poor person? However, from Fengju's actions, and after thinking over this Fu'shi's character, I no longer have such intentions.
I'm afraid that within one or two years, she will have to enter the inner court. Rather than have it happen suddenly, I would rather let her slowly get used to it. That is why I came over today…" before she could finish speaking, there was a burst of noise from the front yard and Old Madam smiled. "They have arrived quite fast." Setting down her teacup, she turned to the door. Soon enough, Madam Jiang came sailing through the door, leading a procession of fine-looking women consisting of Jiang Wanying, Xu'shi and Huo'shi. However, honest Cui'shi and Yue Lan did not join in the merriment this time.
"I arrived at Old Ancestor's place first thing in the morning to pay my respects, and found that Old Madam had come here," Jiang Wanying went straight to the heart of the matter with a smile as she escorted Madam Jiang to a seat below Old Madam Jin before placing herself by Old Madam Jin's side. Her smile was very bright as she said, "It must be due to Old Madam's high spirits and our lack of anything to do that led us to this rustic little corner. Yi? Where is my dear elder sister? I wonder where she is? Not even a single attendant to entertain guests? What an awful blunder, if she lacks people, surely she could simply ask me for a few? Oh no, in the end, the fault must be mine." [2]
Old Madam Jin's laughter was low and idyllic, "She favours peace and quiet and does not like having many people around. Earlier, after personally serving some fragrant tea and snacks, she heard that I was itching to eat the sweet potatoes from her backyard and personally went out to dig them up with her maids."
Just then, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao came into the living room slowly. They stopped before Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying to give their greetings.
Old Madam Jin nodded privately to herself. She thought: This Fu'shi is a truly virtuous one. See how well brought up the two children are? Clearly, my daughter-in-law doesn't like them, nor do they like this grandmother much either, but the children still persevered and did not allow their dislike to show too much on their faces or stop them from showing their filial piety. On this point alone, they are already superior to Fengju's other children.
While she pondered over this, Fu Qiuning, along with Yu Jie and Aunt Yu, quickly came in to give their greetings to Madam Jiang.
When Jiang Wanying saw the scarf-covered head and plain clothes and skirt covered in a bit of dust and ash, she privately sneered. No matter how one looked at it, this so-called first wife looked no different from those common peasant farmer wives in the wild. Her face might be prettier than those coarse women, but that was it. She frowned and thought: Have I really overthought matters? How could this kind of crude-looking female attract Cousin's love? He is, after all, a great and dignified Young Marquis, not some uneducated toad by the road.
At this, she let go of the breath she had been holding. Suddenly, she stiffened again. No, she cannot let go of her guard as yet. The most desirable object is the one that is out of their grasp. While he might not show open interest, Cousin might still be eyeing this creature secretly. It's best not to relax completely. No matter what, this woman could prove to be trouble later. For now, this problem could still be removed, but not right away. So long as she did not rid herself of that woman, she could not take things lightly.
"From what Fengju said, Old Madam likes the sweet potatoes from your place. So go fetch some now. Still, are the sweet potatoes in the inner court all gone? Must you personally dig through the mud for them? Have you no servants? If someone sees you like this, how unsightly is it?" Madam Jiang slowly sipped her tea, her eyes slowly scalding their way up and down Fu Qiuning's person. A frown between her eyebrows showed her dissatisfaction.
"We only managed to collect a hundred jin from the yard. I have already chosen the best ones to be steamed," [3] Fu Qiuning decided to pretend to be deaf and stupid, answering as though she had merely received questions about sweet potatoes. She thought: Wei, I only have two servants here. If I don't help them, how long do you think it would take before you even get to nibble on a potato? You are here to eat my food and still want to tell me how to do things. Is there any justice in this world?
At this, Old Madam Jin [1] suddenly laughed out loud and said, "One should follow the customs of the village one visits; even I haven't said anything yet. Daughter-in-law, you shouldn't nit-pick too much. Isn't it good enough to receive satisfactory food here? If you are not used to it, there's no need for you to stay and serve me. You all can go back now. I believe Wan girl also has plenty to do and should not leave her work."
"What is Old Ancestor saying? Are you afraid that I will snatch food from you?" Jiang Wanying quickly lowered her teacup to[1] smile brightly at the Old Madam. "Didn't Elder Sister say she had collected a hundred jin of sweet potatoes? No matter how much Old Madam could eat, surely a hundred jin is still too much? You shouldn't be too greedy and think that we're here to snatch your things. We have been spoilt by Old Ancestor's blessings, but surely you could still let us have a little taste? Are you really that unwilling to indulge us?"
Old Madam Jin smiled, "If you want to have a taste, you may stay. How dare you imply that this old lady is greedy? You are getting more and more daring, to actually say such a thing to my face." She turned to the maid next to her, "Luo Cui, send a girl to Fengju's place and invite him to come too. Otherwise, he would complain about how everything had been eaten by this Old Ancestor, causing him to suffer a loss."
Madam Jiang [1] also quickly pasted on a smile and said, "He has not been by this morning to give his morning greeting. I believe he must have left for the morning court for some business. According to Wan girl, Prince Rong's Palace also sent people over to look for him a few times now; I believe he won't be around. Therefore, Old Ancestor can enjoy today's meal with a peaceful mind. I shall have someone send some to him later."
Old Madam Jin answered with a little nod, "En, that's fine."
Fu Qiuning said, "Old Madam, Madam, do please continue to sit for a bit, I shall go and tend to the fire."
She was about to leave when Xu'shi [1] sniggered and said, "What's this? Is Elder Sister a cook? Are you saying that those sweet potatoes won't cook if you don't personally oversee them? What's the use of having servants? You should sit and chat with us. Naturally, if Elder Sister is sure that work could not happen without your personal supervision, this younger sister dare not stop you. We must take care to ensure that everything is to Old Madam's taste, after all,"
Fu Qiuning looked over at Xu'shi. Her [1] smile was wintry as she answered in a low voice, "Unfortunately, I have shown a ridiculous side to Little Sister. These matters really do need my personal supervision. With such an eloquent person as litter sister to entertain Old Madam and Elder Madam, surely my presence would not be missed?"
With a final slight nod, she left.
Xu'shi sneered at Fu Qiuning's disappearing back, "Clearly a shu-born daughter is still a shu-born daughter, without half the manners or sensibilities of a well brought up person. To think that she would treat herself like a cook and demean herself before the servants-"
[1] Old Madam Jin coughed, cutting off her diatribe.
Xu'shi suddenly switched direction and laughingly said, "That's right, I am bad at speaking. When it comes to the virtues of women, good cooking skills also count as one. Otherwise, where does the phrase 'To wash one's hands and make soup [4]' comes from? For Elder Sister to personally enter the kitchen, isn't it showing great filial piety to Old Ancestor? I have always wished to honour Old Ancestor by entering the kitchen myself, but I never did have such an opportunity. I believe our Second Madam is not as unlucky as me. Who knows how many dishes she had personally made for Old Ancestor?"
Right now, this hatred in Jiang Wanying's heart, ah…
This Xu'shi was the most difficult to deal with among all of the concubines. Aside from acting sweet before Jin Fengju, she had no respect for anyone else. However, she was very restrained with her actions and did not act recklessly, merely insinuating with her words. This was the reason why Jiang Wanying was willing to let Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao enter the clan school. Once the two sides inevitably got into a fight, at least she could be rid of one or the other. This woman was like an ugly toad, whether she bites or not, having such a repulsive creature by her side was enough to disgust her.
Therefore, she quickly sneered and said, "Little Sister has spoken wrongly. How could I be anywhere as skilled as you? Back then, my mother only advised me that as the granddaughter of the Duke of Lu, I must learn how to manage a household as I would one day be in charge of my husband's property. Therefore, my time spent learning cooking and other female arts was relatively short, and I dare not show such poor skills before Old Ancestor.
Unlike Little Sister, ah. Speaking of which, Little Sister is clearly more skilled than Elder Sister. Elder Sister is a shu-born daughter and had no need to learn matters concerning household management, thus, she could focus her attention on cooking skills and other female arts. However, isn't Little Sister a di-born daughter? Though your father may not be some prominent king, he is at least a fourth-rank official, isn't he? Why did he not let you learn some household management skills and focus on these little female arts instead?
Could it be that Little Sister already knew that you would marry into a family as a conc… well, well, enough about that. There's no need to speak of this matter anymore. Perhaps I am too stupid. I do believe that Little Sister must be very clever and talented indeed and have no need to study anything beforehand."
Old Madam Jin had long since been accustomed to this kind of battle of the tongues among the so-called 'well-bred noblewomen'. In fact, she used to be one of them. Back then, the Old Marquis was also quite a sought after man and the struggle between herself and those secondary wives and concubines was even fiercer. What's a little heated lip battle? Who cared about all these frigid ironies and scorching satires being thrown about?
The most frightening thing about these inner court battles was that there was no way to know how many human lives were lost as a result of a hidden scheme. Although there had been many open and secret battles within Jin Fengju's inner court, no one had died so far. This spoke well of her grandson's intelligence and ability to manage his family well. He had installed enough fear within the hearts of all his wives and concubines and kept them from being reckless.
The Old Madam was so lost in thought that it was as if she had fallen into a trance. Meanwhile, Madam Jiang and the others kept a perfunctory conversation going, when suddenly, a sweet fragrance wafted into the room. Soon after, Fu Qiuning, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu came out bearing large trays filled with little plates of food. The sweet fragrance came from these plates.
"Old Ancestor, these are Baked Sweet Potato Slices. The steamed ones are done, they are now cooling in the kitchen. It's too hot to eat those now," said Fu Qiuning as she laid a plate carefully before her.
Jin Changjiao immediately picked up a piece of golden Baked Potato Slice and said childishly, "Great-grandmother, I've just washed my hands, let me peel it for you first. Baked Sweet Potatoes are very delicious,"
Old Madam smiled, "Good, good, good, my great-granddaughter is very filial."
Fu Qiuning handed a plate to Jin Changfeng, "Give this to Elder Madam."
Jin Changfeng took the plate and brought it to Madam Jiang. As he peeled the sweet potato, he said, "Elder Madam, please try it. I have also washed my hands," Then, he held out the peeled sweet potato to Madam Jiang.
Madam Jiang allowed a trace of a smile on her face as she nodded and accepted the sweet potato. She took a small bite and chewed it slowly.
As for Jiang Wanying, Xu'shi, Huo'shi etc, none of them received this special treatment. No matter what, Fu Qiuning was still the official wife, and therefore did not need to serve them. They were served by Yu Jie and Aunt Yu instead.
Speaking of which, although Jiang Wanying was only a secondary wife, her position was only slightly inferior to Fu Qiuning. However, with the household matters in her hands, she held the true power in the family. If she had been an ordinary woman, Fu Qiuning might have curried favour by bringing a plate of sweet potatoes to her and flattering her a little bit to gain some benefits. It was really no skin off her nose if she did this for her future benefits.
However, just who was Fu Qiuning?
Although life had been a bit difficult, she had gotten through years of life as an abandoned (free) woman in the remote location that was Night Breeze Pavilion. How could she be willing to surrender this little bit of status for the sake of some random benefits she did not need?
Thus, as Jiang Wanying choked down the Baked Sweet Potato, her heart continued to be troubled. However, there was nothing she could say as her position was indeed inferior to the other. The jealousy that had been barely suppressed in her heart reared its ugly head again. She thought: No, this woman might be neither humble nor arrogant, however, the moment she sticks her head out, wouldn't it be impossible to suppress her? Since you are unwilling to bow your head, don't blame me for being ruthless. No matter what, I must find a way to drive her out of this marquisate. I can't let her continue to sit in my position forever.
Several ideas sprouted in her mind but for the moment, none of them appeared to be feasible.
Jiang Wanying desperately thought: I must plan things out secretly, so secretly that not even my shrewd cousin can find a trace of it.
Everyone had their own thoughts. In fact, those sweet potatoes did not really taste too unique from the ones they had, but Old Madam kept praising them. Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "Old Madam, if you like them, please take a few back with you." She turned to Yu Jie and Aunt Yu, "Go to the backyard and dig a few more, be careful not to injure the potatoes."
Yu Jie and Aunt Yu accepted the order and went off. Fu Qiuning sat down to accompany Old Madam Jin and Madam Jiang for a little chat. Suddenly, Madam Jiang said, "Speaking of which, this is the first time I visited Night Breeze Pavilion ever since I entered the marquisate. The rooms are very neat, why don't you take us for a little tour?"
Fu Qiuning knew that Madam Jiang probably did not believe that the rest of the rooms were as simple and plain as the little hall and privately snickered. Are you that afraid that your son would gift all his good stuff to me?
Even his place had not been filled up, how could he be willing to part with any treasures to me? Besides, even if he wanted to please me, surely he would not be as brainless as to stuff my place with things when Old Madam had been threatening to visit?
This was clearly trying to find a water source when there was hardly a drop of water to be found. Nevertheless, Fu Qiuning stood up, saluted the Old Madam, who would not be going with them, and led Madam Jiang, Jiang Wanying and the others into each room. As they walked, she explained, "There are many rooms but few people. Therefore, there was no need to keep every room spotless. However, we do clean all the general rooms we used,"
After the decision was made, they all went for a short tour and found that the rest of the living space was indeed as plain and spartan as the living room. When they reached the study, they found that aside from several bookshelves stuffed with books, and a few tables and chairs, there was really nothing else of note. Madam Jiang secretly nodded to herself: Looks like my son still has some integrity and did not let this woman turn his head. Perhaps it is true that his only interest in this place was due to those two promising children.
She had also noted that occasion when Jin Changfeng peeled a sweet potato for her. Though she did not like this grandson for his inferior background, that little act of filial piety still moved her a little, enough to develop some positive interest in him. After all, weren't they related to her? Wasn't that child the flesh and blood of her most promising son?
Her musings were interrupted by Concubine Huo's sudden high pitched scream. She pointed accusingly at one of the tables and cried, "This… how did this get here?"
The table was situated in a corner, which was why Madam Jiang and Jiang Wanying had not noticed it immediately. After Concubine Huo's dramatic scream, everyone turned to look and as one, their expression all sank as they caught sight of the paperweights on the table.
Fu Qiuning was also stunned. Desperately, she thought: Why had she forgotten to put away those two eye-catching things?!
However, it was too late for such thoughts. Fortunately, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao were in the living room, chatting with Old Madam. Thus, there was no one to give her away when she pulled a bewildered look and said hesitantly, "Is there something unusual about those paperweights? Lord Husband brought them home for the children to use. I am not too clear about such things and merely thought they look nice. Also, the quality of the jades appeared to be quite good. Why is Little Sister so shocked?"
Huo'shi and Xu'shi's faces had paled, but Jiang Wanying maintained her smile as she said, "Elder Sister, did Lord Husband not tell you about the origin of these jades? Besides the delicacy and moistness of the jades and the exquisite carving, what makes these jades even more precious was that they were bestowed by the emperor himself. Back then, when the countries all paid tributes to the emperor, many kinds of gifts were brought in.
When the emperor laid eyes upon these jade lions, he praised Lord Husband on the spot and likened his contributions to our great country to a lion of great strength, and thus bestowed these lions to him. Lord Husband loved these lions very much. Xuan'er had begged him twice for them but was denied both times. A few days ago, he told me that they have been gifted away. I had been wondering to whose hands they had gone to, looks like they have been gifted to Elder Sister."
All these were said with a shallow smile. Madam Jiang, Concubine Huo and Concubine Xu's expressions were even more ugly by the end of this long speech. However, these paperweights had been personally gifted by Jin Fengju to the twins, therefore, they could not say anything about it. Finally, with a disgruntled, humph, they all left the study.
Naturally, Old Madam Jin was not yet senile and one look on Madam Jiang's face told her that they must have found something disagreeable, her words thereafter were filled with sour dissatisfaction. As for Fu Qiuning, she kept her head lowered, gave the appearance of attentiveness and occasionally responded with some sound that was neither agreement nor disagreement.
This reminded Old Madam of her relationship back when she was much younger and had to deal with her mother-in-law, sisters-in-law and the random concubines. Everyone called her virtuous and gullible, believing that her husband would soon spoil the concubines and abandon the wife. However, in the end, she was the one with the firmest footing in the family and the one with the last laugh.
Seeing Concubine Xu and Concubine Huo looking more and more arrogant as Fu Qiuning continued to keep her head lowered, the old lady privately laughed to herself: Do you really believe that Fu'shi is afraid? She merely does not wish to get involved with the rest of you. You are all considered young ladies of a good family, however, you can't even see past the end of your nose.
At this, she suddenly stood up and said, "Enough, enough, I had thought to quietly freeload a meal here but never expect all of you to suddenly come pattering in after me. Now that there are more than a few dozen of us here, how are we to expect them to feed all of us? I'm afraid we shall have to wrap things up. The owner must be impatient for us to go. We should not overstay our welcome and return to our respective courtyards. However, don't forget to bring me those sweet potatoes."
Fu Qiuning smiled, "What is Old Ancestor saying? Are you trying to get this granddaughter-in-law killed? It's still early, it's fine to sit for a little more. Although this humble woman does not have any mountain treasures or fresh seafood, we do not lack rough tea or plain rice…"
Old Madam Jin waved her hand, "No need, no need, I will come again. What if I bore you too much and you bar me from coming in the future? I know what you are thinking, trying to put me off by saying you only have rough tea and plain rice. You're hoping that I won't come in the future. Hei-hei, don't even think about it,"
At this, everyone laughed.
As the people prepared the sedan chair and eager hands helped Old Madam onto the sedan, Jiang Wanying turned to Fu Qiuning with a beatific smile, "Sister is so very lucky! Such a wonderful pair of children, and so promising. They will soon enter the clan school and show off their skills. What a pity they are not your biological children. Still, as the saying goes, the grace of bearing children cannot be compared to the grace of raising them. Therefore, Elder Sister need not worry, however, Night Breeze Pavilion is a little out of the way. I should really speak to Lord Husband and have Elder Sister move back to the inner court sooner. That way, I can take better care of you, don't you think so?"
Fu Qiuning merely mumbled some niceties in a humble manner and, after much difficulty, managed to send them off. As she saw the backs of Old Madam Jin and the rest of the entourage disappear out the door, Fu Qiuning finally spared a wry smile. "Old Madam, ah, Old Madam, just what song are you trying to sing? Even your grandson has promised to let me grow old in peace here and not force me into that tiger's pit. Does the idea of me finding peace in this hidden place bother you?"
"What is Mother saying?" Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao did not hear what Fu Qiuning said.
When she shook her head and said, "It was nothing, I'm just a little tired."
They immediately stepped forward and said, "Mother is tired? Come, let's go into the house, we'll help you massage your legs."
"You little flatterers," Fu Qiuning burst out laughing and poked their foreheads. "Don't think that you can fool me. You're in such a hurry to rush back to the study because you abandoned writing your big characters because of Elder Madam's sudden visit, didn't you? Well, go on and finish your work. There's no need for you to worry about me. The only thing you need to worry about is not placing those white jade lions in a conspicuous place… be sure to hide them, otherwise, if your little brothers and sisters suddenly come to play and cause another little accident. I don't know who you're going to cry to."
This frightened the children so much that immediately they rushed back to the study to hide their white jade lions. Meanwhile, Fu Qiuning continued to ponder over Old Madam's intention as she returned to her room. The more she thought, the less she understood. She had very little contact with Jin Fengju, and though she knew the other party was powerful, she understood him less than the Old Madam who watched him grow up. Considering what she had heard from this grandson about the grandmother, she could tell that this old lady had no intention of allowing Fu Qiuning to stay within Night Breeze Pavilion for long, which was why the Old Madam had pulled out such a move. As she leaned on the pillow, Fu Qiuning still could not understand what was going on in that Old Madam's head.
After a while, she sighed, picked up the embroidery basket and absently continued her work. However, the lack of attention soon bit her back as she accidentally stabbed herself. She had just tossed the work aside to study her finger when a figure flashed before her and an overly familiar voice said, "Why are you so careless? Did you prick yourself? Don't move, I'll suck out the blood for you."
Who else could it be but Jin Fengju who had seemingly materialized out of thin air? He grabbed her hand and was about to put the scallion like fingers into his mouth when Fu Qiuning was shaken out of her stupor.
She forcefully snatched her hand back and said, "No need for Young Marquis to waste your effort, I shall do it myself." Then, she stuck her hand into her mouth and looked away. Rather than hurt, she was mostly startled.
Jin Fengju finally appeared to have realised he had lost control of himself. With a 'hehe', he sat down on the low bench by the kang bed and smiled embarrassedly, "What do you mean 'waste my effort'? When I saw you prick yourself, it was as though my heart had been pierced and hurried over."
Even as the explanation left his lips, he also felt that his words were too weird. Why had he suddenly become so blind and so stupid? He had sneaked into the courtyard, wishing to observe the people here in secret and find out more about the aftermath of the Old Madam's visit, when Fu Qiuning accidentally pricked herself. At that moment, his heart felt as though it had been stabbed. When he finally came to himself, he had already grabbed her hand.
"Why did you come? Weren't you supposed to visit those wives and concubines? Did you accidentally wander over to my place?" Since the atmosphere was a little awkward, Fu Qiuning tried cracking a joke to relieve the atmosphere. It was half making fun of him and half allowing him a way to save face.
"You're right," What kind of person was Jin Fengju? He quickly picked up the hint and took the opportunity to step back and save his face. "I was heading towards Clear Soft Pavilion when I heard that Old Ancestor came here, so I changed my route. I wished to speak to Wanying about something when I came in, thinking that she might still be here." Jin Fengju concluded with a smile, ready to close this section of his life by changing the subject. "Well? Have all the sweet potatoes been dug out?"
Jin Fengju watched as Fu Qiuning picked up her embroidery again.
Fu Qiuning nodded, "Just about, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu are busily working in the backyard. Though we only planted half a mu of land, we still managed to harvest a few hundred catties of sweet potatoes. Seeing that it would not rain today, we decided to pull all the sweet potatoes out and set them aside to dry off a little before storing them in some of these unused rooms."
Jin Fengju nodded, "I see, why don't I have a few servants come over to assist? No matter what, you're still a family of women. A few hundred catties of sweet potatoes can be easily dealt by a few young servant boys."
His words managed to touch Fu Qiuning's heart, enough that she smiled at him, "That would be a great help. I am thankful for Lord Husband's grace."
"We're a family, what is there to be thankful for," Jin Fengju quickly smiled back. He then asked, "Has the Old Madam taken her lunch here? Has she seen the whole front and backyard? What does she think of it?"
Fu Qiuning did not know whether to cry or laugh. "Don't talk about it anymore. Once Old Ancestor settled herself here, who do you think came rushing from behind? Elder Madam came in leading Lord Husband's other wives and concubines. They made such a fuss that Old Ancestor was no longer in the mood to take lunch. I understand that Old Madam loves me dearly, but with so many people here so suddenly, how am I to entertain them?"
Jin Fengju smiled, "It's because she loves you that she left early. Otherwise, what is a meal? You could have had the kitchen send something over. It would not trouble you much to order food from the kitchen. You must have been treated to more of my other wives and concubines' lip services. Old Ancestor did not have the heart to trouble you anymore and left early instead."
While they were still speaking, Yu Jie had already rushed back from the inner court. After changing clothes, she came in to pour tea for Jin Fengju before retreating.
"Well, at least you understand this much," said Fu Qiuning. A thought occurred to her and she sighed, "That's right, Elder Madam said that she wished to take a tour of the rooms and ended up in the study. Those two children did not put their white jade lions away and the paperweights were seen by everyone. From what I can see, Elder Madam, Madam and those Concubines' faces were all very unpleasant. You'll most likely be interrogated once you return. Aih! I was careless too. I never thought that so many people would suddenly turn up. I have already informed Feng'er and Jiao'er to put their paperweights away. If you cannot resolve the matter, it's fine to take them back with you."
Jin Fengju waved his hand, interrupting Fu Qiuning with a laugh, "What's this nonsense? Why should I care what they think when I give out my belongings? Feng'er and Jiao'er have never received anything from me since their childhood. As for the pair of broken dragon and phoenix pendants, could they really not understand what happened? At any rate, it is good for them to see those paperweights.
This will let them know that should they keep breaking things, I shall keep granting better things for the twins. Nevertheless, matters would become very complicated for them if they break something bestowed by the emperor. I might not even be able to cover for them should such a terrible thing happen." He smiled at Fu Qiuning, "Why are you wasting your worries over such trivialities? Naturally, I have my own reasons for doing things."
Fu Qiuning nodded, "So long as it does not trouble you. Naturally, the Young Marquis is powerful and wise, however, the cries and complaints from your wives and concubines would still be vexing, to say the least." In front of Jin Fengju, she refused to address those women as 'sisters'. That's because she does not consider herself his wife. She merely plays the role of the official wife from time to time as needed.
After giving the matter a little more thought, she continued, "My meaning is, Feng'er and Jiao'er are not greedy children. Therefore, you need not take too much care over your gifts. It's fine to gift them the occasional trinkets. There's no need to give children anything too precious or expensive.
So long as the father's intentions are true, who would care about the value of things? Precious things also brought with them their own line of trouble. You were not here to see the ladies' faces when they saw those white jade lions-" she suddenly stopped herself. It felt as though she was stirring up trouble with this line of thought, better to stop it. Fu Qiuning gave a little awkward smile and continued, "Regardless, it is best to stop giving things that are too precious."
"Naturally, I have my own thoughts on the matter," Jin Fengju smiled as he picked up his teacup and took a sip. He said, "In a few days, Great Scholar Lin will arrive. I have also invited a female teacher to teach the Four Arts to the clan girls, so have Jiao'er attend too. Be sure to prepare them for school.
Also, seeing how the school is a little far from here and though Aunt Yu and Yu Jie are your most trusted helpers, it is not good to have them accompany the children due to their age. How about attaching a young serving boy and a young serving girl as the children's companions? What do you think?"
Fu Qiuning immediately frowned.
Knowing what she must be thinking, Jin Fengju said, "There's no need to worry. I shall have Jin Ming pick out some clever, honest and clean children from outside. There's no need to use the ones within the marquisate. You also have no need to worry about letting spies into Night Breeze Pavilion."
Fu Qiuning's face flushed at the thought of being so easily read. She said softly, "Many thanks for your consideration. I am fine, regardless. However, the children are akin to my own life. I cannot allow any mistakes to harm them."
Jin Fengju smiled, "Why the need to thank me? You're not their blood mother and yet you care for them to this extent. What of me, their biological father? Enough about that, it is nearly mid-autumn now. I shall have Jin Ming purchase some materials for autumn and winter use. He should be here soon. I see that the clothes you make are no worse than the ones made by tailors outside. However, if you're tired, you may have tailors come and measure everyone for a few sets of clothes. The Mid-autumn family banquet will be here soon, [a] therefore, you should have at least two new sets of clothes."
Fu Qiuning was surprised: "What? Mid-autumn family banquet?" Immediately after her outburst, she awkwardly said, "Yes, it should be so. I am the one confused. Mid-Autumn Festival is the time when families are reunited with each other. How could a family like ours not prepare a banquet?"
Jin Fengju laughed and said, "Exactly. I'm afraid the family banquet won't be that interesting. Just wait until the New Year's Eve banquet. Now that one would truly be lively. Father and Elder Brother would hurry back home from their official duties in the field and we shall have lots of people gathered together."
Seeing Fu Qiuning turn pale, his mischievous nature took over him and he coughed slightly, "Ahem, not only would it be very lively, but the amount of work would increase too. Mother suffers from some illness while Wanying is delicate. As for Xu'shi and Huo'shi, those two are a little pushy and rather unreliable. Cui'shi and Yue Lan have weak personalities and cannot be counted on to lead.
In the end, I had to depend on Wanying for everything. However, this time, I'm afraid Wanying might encounter some difficulties. You happen to have the stable and calm personality needed for leadership, and also have many good ideas. How about sharing some of her burdens and assisting her a little?" [1]
"You had better not bring harm to me," Fu Qiuning glared at Jin Fengju. There was no need to put up any pretence of the 'benevolent woman' in front of this man. She lowered her embroidery and said, "I see that Second Madam is a very capable and hard-working person who loves to show off her talent. As the saying goes, 'the skilled will be given more work'. Your job is to praise her whenever she complains about how hard she is working. What's the cost of saying a few words of praise to a hard-working person?
So long as you praise her, she will be more than happy to ensure that everything is properly arranged for you, so why drag me underwater? Are you afraid that I am not hated enough by the others? Well, I'm afraid that Second Madam hates that she could not just eat me up. I wonder, back then, who was it who solemnly promised to let me grow old in peace?"
Jin Fengju laughed, "Why are you calling her Second Madam too? As position goes, you are senior, so it sounds strange and awkward."
Fu Qiuning replied, "She addressed me as Elder Sister to my face, therefore, I should call her Younger Sister. However, she is still your secondary wife, therefore, it is fine for me to call her Second Madam. This is all irrelevant. All you need to remember is to avoid ignoring my thoughts and allow us to pass our lives quietly here."
Hearing her resolute words, Jin Fengju no longer insisted. He thought: This is fine, things should proceed slowly. Impatience would only ruin things. Not to mention, the influence of Prince Hong's Palace has not been fully suppressed, therefore, it is better to let her stay out here for the time being. When the time comes, naturally, it will not be up to her to decide.
Fu Qiuning did not discover Jin Fengju's hidden intention. The remaining few days were spent discussing clothing patterns with Yu Jie and Aunt Yu and preparing book bags for the Jin twins. The siblings were very excited about the prospect of attending school. The two had always enjoyed learning and had been envious of their friends who attended school without them. However, they also understood their unique position in the family, and more importantly, they were afraid of making Fu Qiuning sad and were therefore very careful to never say a word about their wish. Now though, they were finally about to attend school! How could they not be excited?
[a] A few days later, Jin Fengju and Jin Ming brought two children into Night Breeze Pavilion, a boy named Jin Zhuan and a girl called Lu Hua. Both were about eight or nine years old, good-looking and nimble. Jin Ming smiled and explained that he had personally looked through the marketplace for a long time before picking out these two. Fu Qiuning also thought they looked like a pair of good children and praised him for his effort.
[a] Later, two days before the Mid-Autumn Festival Banquet, Jin Ming came with plenty of snacks for the family and news that Great Scholar Lin had finally arrived at the marquisate. He tactfully asked after the preparations Fu Qiuning had made for the children, meaning to find out if she needed anything for either the banquet or the school.
Fu Qiuning smiled and said, "To be honest, seeing how much effort you've put in for us, I should really reward you with a few taels of silver. Unfortunately, my place doesn't have much money. If I gave you too little, I'm afraid it would just invite scorn. But, never fear, I shall speak to your master and have him reward you well. After all, as a pampered young master, he should act like it and be generous with his rewards."
Jin Ming, already familiar with her sassy way of speaking, quickly laughed and said, "What is Madam saying? It is all part of this servant's job. Please, please do not speak to Master about rewarding this undeserving one. Otherwise, instead of money, I would suffer two kicks from the Master. Moreover, Master would say that this lowly one is greedy and has spoken unnecessary things in front of Madam to instigate Madam into speaking out!
Madam, please don't bring harm to this servant. In fact, the reward this servant gets from Master is not low. Moreover, even if others do not understand Madam's situation, how could this servant not know? There's no need to bring this matter up." After that final speech and another reminder to Fu Qiuning to prepare well, he left.
After Jin Ming left, Fu Qiuning called for the four children, Jin Changfeng, Jin Changjiao, Lu Hua and Jin Zhuan, and spoke to them gently, "Tomorrow, you shall all attend the clan school and study there. You will see and experience both good and bad things. You will encounter children with deep schemes as well as those who act brashly without regard. However, that does not mean that good children do not exist. The two of you must remember to stay close to kinder classmates and to stay away from the schemers and the reckless. However, you must also be careful not to appear withdrawn or fearful, and to never approach strangers."
After directing the twins, she turned to Lu Hua and Jin Zhuang, "This will be your first time mixing with people from a great house. I'm afraid there will be many things you do not know and this lack of knowledge could be dangerous. But, no matter, you will learn things slowly. You might suffer a couple of setbacks. However, there is no such thing as a smooth sailing life. What's more, your identities as slaves will work against you. Nevertheless, I hope that you four children will act with one heart and support each other.
To outsiders, you might be called masters and servants, but in fact, you are more like brothers and sisters to each other. Remember that a single chopstick is easy to break, but who could break a bundle of chopsticks? It's fine to suffer a small loss now and then, so long as you maintain your unity." After this long and sincere sermon, she said, "Enough, it is getting late. Be sure to sleep well, tomorrow you must wake up early and Jin Ming will guide you to the clan school."
That night, Fu Qiuning tossed and turned in bed, unable to take her own advice and sleep well. She thought of the children, who were brought to her side at barely three years old. Since then, they had lived together for more than five years as mother and children. For more than 1,600 days they were never half a step away from her line of sight. Now they would leave in the morning for the clan school and only return in the evening. She would have to repeatedly endure whole days of not knowing whether they suffered from others' anger, exhaustion or even a teacher's reprimands and scolding. She felt so anxious that she finally sat up in bed and stared blankly into the courtyard as shadows and moonlight slowly moved across her sight.
"How unexpected. After two lifetimes as a human, without even experiencing pregnancy or carrying a child to term, I still experienced the emotions of motherhood. Aih! Hopefully, the heavens will protect me and let my children grow up safe and sound. That is all I hope for." Fu Qiuning muttered over her folded hands. Then, she remembered that she never believed in Buddhism in either of her lives. She had no idea whether it was useful to hug Buddha's feet [2] right now.
The next day, just after dawn, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao got up. Jin Zhuan and Lu Hua had already gotten up and packed their bags. After leaving the twins to freshen up under Aunt Yu's care, Fu Qiuning called for the two slave children to come in for breakfast. Everyone sat down to a breakfast of thin porridge and two boiled chicken eggs each.
When Jin Ming entered the courtyard, he found the twins all packed up and ready to leave. He smiled and said, "The Master is afraid that Madam and the children might have overslept and sent this servant over to call you. Unexpectedly, everyone is ready to go. Since everyone is ready, we may set out a little earlier."
Fu Qiuning had loaded things that Jin Ming had informed her to prepare into schoolbags for the children. These included books, brushes, paper, ink stones and ink sticks. The schoolbags sewed by her looked like ordinary cloth bags from the outside, but the inside had compartments for the stationeries, making it very convenient for the children to access the items in their bags and not let the inkstones or brushes stain the books or papers.
"Steward Jin, do take care," said Fu Qiuning a little anxiously.
Jin Ming laughed in response.
"Madam, please do not worry. This servant will especially inform the teacher about Young Master's cleverness. So young, yet he already has several volumes of books and poems in his belly. How could a teacher not love such a student? So long as the teacher favours him, there's no need to worry."
With that, he herded the children away from the courtyard.
"Madam, there's truly no need to worry overly much. Young Master and Young Miss are both very sensible and good children. As for those silk-pants boys [2], it will be fine so long as our side doesn't provoke them. So why should you worry?"
Fu Qiuning sighed, "You don't understand. I know very well that the twins would not initiate trouble. However, that does not mean others would not take the initiative to provoke them. Aih, how can I not worry?"
Hearing this, Aunt Yu said, "If we want the children to avoid provocation, then, surely we should not have allowed Young Master and Young Miss to wear those gold necklaces to school? What if those other children saw them and became jealous? What if the dragon and phoenix jade pendants incident repeats itself?"
Fu Qiuning shook her head, "That might not necessarily happen. I have also considered the matter. In the end, the twins are the Young Marquis' children. To avoid showing off, I have deliberately arranged for the plainest clothing possible. However, if the children of a Young Marquis could not even afford to wear gold on their person, what would the other children think of them?
Aside from those who had attended the banquet, there should be other children as well. These children would not have a deep understanding of the inner court matters and would only assume that the twins were not favoured by the Young Marquis and join forces with the inner court children to bully them. This would completely undo my efforts to make the twins appear unassuming."
Yu Jie was getting angry, "Then, according to Madam, there is no end to reasons to pick fights. No matter whether we are modest or ostentatious, we would be targeted regardless. How awful, why are the thoughts of the people in noble houses so twisted? How many times has the Master visited us? Even these few times were enough to arouse their resentment. Now, they even want to pull the children into the fights, how unfair!"
"Inner court matters are as deep as the seas, their undercurrents rife with sea serpents, ah!" Fu Qiuning leaned back and sighed. "Why do you think I refuse to enter the inner court? Enough, enough, let's not bother ourselves with it anymore. We shall have to see the children's luck. If they could please their teachers and gain favourable attention for themselves, they should suffer less bullying."
While Fu Qiuning was worrying over whether the children would be bullied, a little ways away, Clear Soft Pavilion was noisy with people.
Although Jin Fengju was not around, the three concubines and one low-level concubine had gathered there to talk.
"I really don't understand what's going on in Lord Husband's mind. I heard those two cheap seeds have also entered the clan school. How should I say it? Does Lord Husband even care for his dignity anymore? What if outsiders started gossiping about how Lord Husband has fathered children with a washerwoman? Where does he plan to put his face? What of his reputation?"
Xu'shi complained in a high-pitched voice, obviously dissatisfied that Jin Changfeng and his sister would be entering the clan school.
"Enough about that, what's the use of talking about it now? Moreover, even if those children were birthed by that cheap woman, they are still Lord Husband's flesh and blood. When you were at Night Breeze Pavilion, did you not have a good look at them? Everyone is saying how similar the brother and sister looked to Lord Husband. Some even say they look just like he did when he was young. I cannot blame Lord Husband for not being able to bear letting them fend for themselves. Our Lord Husband is not as ruthless as you think."
Jiang Wanying spoke slowly and deliberately, her every word showing the loftiness and demeanour of a benevolent mistress of the house. Xu'shi had thought that she could instigate Jiang Wanying into acting on their behalf and had not expected this mild-tempered answer at all. Turning her head away with a snort, Xu'shi said, "Lord Husband is kind-hearted and Madam is both virtuous and generous, ah. Your words clearly reflect your status."
"What do you wish me to say?" Jiang Wanying sneered. "It is better to be more prudent with your words. No matter how good-tempered our Lord Husband is, he would not tolerate you troubling him day and night. Let me tell you, even those two white jade lions have been bestowed to the twins. How many times had our children begged Lord Husband for those jades but were denied time and again?
Are you truly still unclear about the matters at hand? You may call me cowardly or devious, however, I dare not provoke those two little ancestors. Those of you who are not afraid of death may go ahead and provoke them as you like. If you suffer a loss, don't blame me for not warning you."
Cui'shi said worriedly, "How can they be so powerful? If Lord Husband's words are to be believed, our sons and daughters are no match for them."
Huo'shi sneered, "That is not necessarily so. No, I don't believe it at all. To say that the children I've given birth to and raised for six years are not as good as those cheap seeds? Madam also should not undervalue herself. Then again, Xuan boy is still young and his learning shallow, so no wonder Lord Husband doesn't pay much attention to him. However, my Yi boy is different, he is Lord Husband's first son. His studies have always been good, especially when it comes to poetry. Even Lord Husband had personally praised his ability. Can those two unsightly things be compared to him?
Aih! Unfortunately, our Xiuru is too gentle and a girl too. Otherwise, I would have my children battle those two inferior seeds and let them see who our Lord Husband truly favours. Just because they have received those white jade lions and dragon-phoenix pendants, they dare to believe themselves Lord Husband's precious offsprings."
Xu'shi clapped her hands once and said, "What sister said is right. Last time, when Xuan boy and our Zhenyi smashed those inferior seeds' jade pendants, Lord Husband never said or did anything either. As for the white jade lions, it was merely to appease those little rats since they received less love from Lord Husband. Moreover, aside from these two items, what other possession do they have? In my opinion, there's no need for Madam to worry. If those two inferior seeds dare to try and overturn the sky, well, the school shall let them know what real power looks like."
Jiang Wanying laughed coldly, "Do I look like I care? If your Yi boy can subdue that Feng boy, well, bravo I say. Personally, I am too timid. As Little Sister Huo said, our Xuan boy is not as good as Yi boy at either poetry or calligraphy, who is also Lord Husband's favourite. However, no matter how timid I am, I can still cheer you from the side. If your Yi boy manages to show that up inferior seed, you may take whatever you like from my room. However, I shall speak the ugly words first. If Yi boy suffers a loss instead, there is nothing I can do about it, understand? I have already warned you about going against them."
Concubine Xu's eyes lit up, her goal was not the things inside Jiang Wanying's room. She felt that so long as she could show up the mistress of the house and gain the respect of the marquisate, could anyone in the marquisate chew their tongue and disrespect her behind her back? Who knows, if Lord Husband was pleased with her, he might even let her take care of some of the family affairs.
Once she had secured some real power in her hands, she could even battle Jiang Wanying head to head. The more she thought, the more beautiful her fantasies became and a brilliant smile bloomed over her face.
Jiang Wanying looked at her expression and privately thought: What an idiot. An idiot who runs practically naked into the enemy's firing range.
She picked up her teacup to slowly sip at her tea, and hide her slight smile of delight.
The women continued their chat. Presently, Qiu Xia came in and addressed Jiang Wanying, "Madam, the maids are waiting for your orders. Elder Madam's Fang Rong also arrived to request for Madam to visit her once your business is finished here. It looks like she wishes to know if the two children at Night Breeze Pavilion will be attending the clan school."
Jiang Wanying rose with a smile, "Really, what is there to ask? It is something that Lord Husband has already decided earlier. I merely pushed the boat along the water and mentioned it in passing." She turned to the concubines, "Well then, I have some matters to attend to. You should also return to your rooms. Today, Old Ancestor will be fasting and reciting Buddhist scripts so there's no need to send greetings. Here I thought I'd have a free day, but alas! Such is my lot in life, ah."
Cui'shi quickly smiled and said, "As the saying goes, those who are capable are worked the hardest. It is because Madam is very capable that Elder Madam tends to push all sorts of responsibilities on you. After all these years, Madam has managed all kinds of large and small matters without even the slightest mistake, who could deny Madam's ability? Lord Husband often said to me that he cherishes you most. Not only were you his childhood sweetheart, but even after marrying in, you have to take care of the household matters. No wonder you have gone so thin but are still willing to push yourself for the good of all…"
Although Cui'shi has a soft temperament, she was particularly good at flattery. Jiang Wanying, the target of her flattery, felt very comfortable at the end of her effortless compliments. Beside them, Xu'shi and Huo'shi snorted and pursed their lips. Once Cui'shi was done talking, Huo'shi smiled and said, "Little Sister Cui is really good at speaking, unlike this humble woman. If Elder Sister is tired, this humble woman is willing to share in Elder Sister's worries and relieve your burden. However, I fear Elder Sister might unwilling."
Jiang Wanying sneered, raised her chin and flashed a burning gaze at Huo'shi. She drawled, "What was that? You wish to assist me in household matters? I never said a word of disagreement. You go and ask Lord Husband, Elder Madam or even Old Madam. If any of them approve, I, of course, would have no objections."
Whatever Huo'shi was planning to say never left her lips. With a final cold snort, she turned around and left the room.

Enough about Fu Qiuning, Jiang Wanying as well as the other women in the family. They all have their own thoughts on today's matter.
Let us, instead, have a look at the children attending their first Great Scholar's class. All the young sons and daughters of the clan who were eligible to attend the clan school had all packed up and entered the hall. Only then, did Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao realise that there were many more sons and daughters in the clan aside from their half-siblings, who lacked even half a point of affection for the twins. They finally began to believe Fu Qiuning's words, which they had originally regarded as a mother's hopeful words of comfort.
"Brother, you be careful now. I'll be going to the girl's hall," Jin Changjiao held her brother's hand, tears brimming in her eyes. From the moment of their birth, she and her brother had lived and suffered together. Together, they were raised under Fu Qiuning's knees and finally knew a life free of suffering.
In these past five years, the twins have been together day and night. Although they slept in separate beds from the age of six, they knew they would see the other's figure the moment they ran outside. She could call out 'brother!' and rush to him and they would spend the entire day together, playing, laughing, reading, learning the qin and painting together. To suddenly separate now, how could she not cry?
Jin Changfeng took his sister's hand and said in a low voice, "You should also pay attention. Do not retort after receiving a few snubs. Endure so long as you can still endure. Mother is right, she is willing to face the sneers and name-calling because, after all, it's not like enduring their words would cause a piece of our flesh to fall off."
Jin Changjiao nodded. She wanted to say more to her brother. However, feeling the eyes of other sons and daughters on them, and fearing that the teacher would arrive early and perceive a bad impression upon seeing her clinging to her brother, she resisted her tears and with a firm goodbye, left with Lu Hua.
Jin Changfeng's companion, Jin Zhuan, was allowed to accompany him to the study hall as he was still young. However, very few companions came with their masters to the hall. In fact, the majority of the companions were 17 or 18-year-olds and could only loiter outside until their masters were done with school.
When the teacher finally ambled in, they saw that he was an old man with white hair and a beard. He had a clear face and was dressed in plain long changpao. He has a ruddy complexion, and from the way he strode towards the chair and sat down, one could tell he was in good health. His aura, as he surveyed the children before him, was neither imposing nor impatient.
Jin Changfeng and Jin Zhuan, under the guidance of an older clan child, paid their respects to the Confucius master and teacher before returning to their desks and sitting down.
The clan children were all of different ages. The first group consisted of children from 5 – 10 years old, the second 10 – 13 years old and the final group from 13 – 16 years old. Once past the age of 16, they could no longer attend the clan school. Those with good grades would attend a famous academy while those with mediocre grades would attend a general academy. If a poor family happened to have a child with good grades, the clan would sponsor the fees for a good school.
After the Great Confucian Master introduced his name, he began teaching. Much to the student's surprise, the Master started off talking about the [2] Three Character Classic. For a moment, the students looked at each other in confusion. That was because, as sons of noble families, they could already recite the Three Character Classic by heart as early as three or four years old. So, why should they repeat this again? However, none of them dared to question the teacher and merely sat in place with impatient faces.
Jin Changfeng also felt a little bored. He had also memorised the Three Character Classic and Fu Qiuning had gone over the meaning behind the idioms with the twins in detail. However, after listening to the master's explanations, he found that although the teacher was talking about the Three Character Classic, the knowledge imparted was vast and the analysis of the idioms was very easy to understand and unusually deep.
He had always liked studying, [1] so upon discovering this new thing, he immediately paid attention.
The class lasted for an hour. Once the class was over, the teacher floated away and the study hall suddenly erupted into noise. They were all talking about their new teacher and many felt that he was unworthy of the title of Great Scholar. However, when Jin Changfeng recalled the way the teacher explained the Three Character Classic, he seriously wrote down certain key points.
Not far away, another person was also frowning in deep thought. It was none other than Jiang Wanying's 5-year-old son Jin Zhenxuan.
Seeing Jin Changfeng acting so serious, he audibly jeered.
What kind of concentration skill would a 9-year-old have?
[1] He was at that age to be sensitive about others' opinions, moreover, he was clearly being ridiculed by a brother who was three years younger than him. Anger brewed in Jin Changfeng's heart.
Many times, he thought of retorting. However, each time, he thought of his mother's words and swallowed those retorts down. He maintained a calm façade and [1] activated Mother's special skill of pretending to be deaf.
It was still the first day of school [1] with a new famous teacher here to teach them. Therefore, no one really dared to be too openly rude. That afternoon, the teacher even let them off early.
When Jin Changfeng walked out the door, he spotted his sister waiting for him under a big locust tree not far away. Seeing him, she waved excitedly.
Brother and sister returned home hand-in-hand. They passed through Yong Cui Garden, exchanging interesting points about school. It took them nearly half an hour to reach Night Breeze Pavilion. Once they entered the courtyard, they saw Fu Qiuning, Yu Jie and Aunt Yu spreading out bright green young soybeans on the ground.
They laughed as they ran in, "Mother, are the green soybeans and peanuts ready to be eaten? Are we having boiled peanuts and soybeans today?"
Fu Qiuning was very happy to see them. She straightened up and said, "Well, you're finally back. I've been in suspense the whole day. Come now… quickly change, the peanuts and soybeans are almost done boiling. You can eat them as soon as you wash your hands. After Mother sets these out to dry, I'll come and speak with you about your day."
The twins ran off after receiving their instructions and Yu Jie laughed. "Are Madam and Aunt Yu now more assured? My ears have grown callouses from hearing your worries all day. Despite Madam's worries, they have both returned safely. Just look at the sky, I do believe it is not yet noon, right? Didn't Master already say? Once they attend the Clan School, the earliest they should be back is around 1-3pm. I expect Young Master and Young Miss have been let off early as it is the first day of school."
The other two ladies nodded and laughed "We were merely voicing our worries, you were the one who insisted on listening. Whose fault was it when callouses grew in your ears?"
Yu Jie pressed her teeth together, pretending to grimace as she said, "You two say this, but how can I control whether to listen to you or not?
The three continued to chat and laugh as they spread out the last few catties of green soybeans on the courtyard and the sunning deck.
After spreading out the green soybeans, the three women returned to the house to wash their hands and change their clothes. Once done, they found Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao already in the living room, nibbling on green soybeans and peanuts. There were small piles of green and brown shells next to them.
When the children saw them, they giggled and said, "We noticed there aren't many green soybeans in the baskets left and were feeling a little hungry and decided to help fetch the boiled beans and peanuts to be cooled. Looks like we're caught red-handed by mother."
The twins each carry a small plate of peeled green soybeans and peanuts and respectfully held them out to Fu Qiuning, "Mother has worked hard, please have a bit of snack."
Fu Qiuning turned to Aunt Yu and Yu Jie, "It's not time to make dinner yet, you two have a seat and eat some too, ba."
Aunt Yu and Yu Jie sat took a small basin of peanuts and young soybeans and sat down on a stool, peeling and snacking on the beans as the twins told the ladies about their first day of school.
"We're part of the Initiation Class for boys about 5 to 10 years old. Teacher Lin is truly worthy of his title as a Great Confucian Scholar. This morning, we learned about Three Character Classics, two pieces from work from the [3] Book of Songs and wrote two sheets of large letters. Later, we studied half a set of an essay from [4] The Analects of Confucius. There's also a Teacher Qi, who taught us about verses and poetry as well as chess strategies…"
Jin Changfeng happily told them about his day. Aunt Yu said with some misgivings, "Haven't you learned most of these from Madam? Why are they teaching you these basic things at the Clan School?"
"Teacher's explanations are very different from mother's. Also, there are lots of younger brothers and sisters in the hall, and some of them haven't studied as far as I did. So, it's natural for the teacher to start from the very basic." As he spoke, Jin Changfeng took out a note-filled paper and handed it to Fu Qiuning, "Mother, look, these are some of Teacher's explanations… I've written down all the important parts."
Fu Qiuning accepted the piece of paper. After looking it over, she smiled and said, "As expected of a Great Scholar. No wonder your father never ceased praising him. To extrapolate so much from a single sheet of the Three Character Classics, hmm, from what I can see, he had only given a rough outline. Otherwise, at your age, it would have been too deep for you." She smiled as she returned the paper, "Feng'er, keep taking notes. Once you've collected up to a hundred pieces of paper, Mother will thread your notes together and you can use it as a reference book in the future."
Jin Changfeng nodded.
Fu Qiuning turned to Jin Changjiao, "And what has Jiao'er learned today?"
Jin Changjiao laughed, "We also learned the Three Character Classics. After that, we studied various embroidery stitches. Teacher Bi is very good. She looks gentle and soft, doesn't speak much and is nothing like Brother's dignified old teacher, but her skill with craft is very excellent. If I can learn from Teacher properly, I could one day be as good as Mother. That's right, according to Teacher, Sister Xiuzhen and I are very good with our qin. She told us to practice well."
Fu Qiuning smiled, "Compared to other children, your skill with qin is considered not bad. Your father also praised your skills. However, you should not be too arrogant. In the eyes of adults, your mastery is still mediocre."
Jin Changjiao giggled, "This daughter knows. To be considered somewhat accomplished, I must at least be like Mother, and be able to sing and play the qin at the same time, right? I hope to one day be as accomplished as Mother."
The little family was chatting happily together when they heard an exclamation from the courtyard, "Wh-what's all this? Just what are these things?"
It was Jin Fengju's voice.
Fu Qiuning quickly stood up. She clapped her hands once and said, "Oh dear, don't tell me Lord Husband came into the yard in a rush and stepped on some of our green soybeans?"
She quickly hurried outside and saw Jin Fengju along with Jin Ming carefully creeping cautiously along the small gaps left by the brilliant turquoise green soybeans.
When Jin Fengju spotted Fu Qiuning, he pointed at the beans, "Qiuning, what are you doing with these? Why on earth is the courtyard covered by them?"
"These are soybeans. Since the weather is so fine, we plan to dry the beans and collect them to be put away. We should get at least a few dozen catties of beans which can be eaten as soybean sprouts or cooked like any other beans," said Fu Qiuning as she looked anxiously at their feet.
Jin Fengju stepped forward lightly with a smile, "A very good thing indeed. Even the sunning deck is filled with them. This feels a little like the plum flower stakes I used to practice martial arts on. Luckily, my skills are still intact, otherwise, I'd have stepped on some of your beans. There are so many of them, how do you plan to peel them all? How about I call in a few old maids to come and assist. No need to thank me, when you make your soybean sprouts or other soybean dishes, just send some to Old Madam, Elder Madam and myself."
"In that case, there's no need for Lord Husband to send anyone to help. This many beans would only take a few days' worth of work. If we were a real farming family, we could have used a special stone grinder and been done with the work in a day. Humph, if I dare to use your people, a good half of my beans would be taken away, isn't that a great loss to me?" Fu Qiuning frankly refused his offer of assistance.
"You certainly is a stingy one, to calculate so strictly over a few catties of beans," Jin Fengju laughed. Seeing Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, he stepped forward to stroke their heads. "Well? How is your first day of school? Did you properly listen to your teachers? Did anyone dare bully you? Come, tell father everything that you have learned today."
Fu Qiuning laughed, "The children had just finished telling us about their day when you arrived. If I had known, I'd have asked them to save their story for a little later and hear it with you and save them having to tell their story twice." She turned to Yu Jie to say, "Go and bring some tea for your Master. Are you so drunk on stories that even your eyes are blinded to your usual duties?"
Yu Jie smiled, "Young Master and Young Miss's stories are so interesting. Madam must know that this maid has never been to school before, therefore it's inevitable that I'd be fascinated, right?"
[1] After that sassy little remark, Yu Jie bustled off, presumably to bring the tea.
Jin Fengju's attention had long been taken in by the plates of green soybeans and peanuts on the table. He smiled, "Looks like god favours me. You thought to sneakily eat some good things in the house and never thought I'd turn up, did you?" He nodded and grabbed a handful of beans to nibble on, "Good, good, it's very delicious."
Fu Qiuning and Aunt Yu could not help laughing. They thought: If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed this man with his little-boy-like behaviour is the heir of a marquisate, ah. He acted like he had been starved for a few days.
Meanwhile, Jin Changfeng happily repeated his story to his father. Jin Fengju nodded and said, "I can see that you're not arrogant and have properly paid attention to your lessons. Speaking of which, this time Xuan'er's performance was not bad. I visited the inner court just now to find out how those children did in school. [5] Yi'er is still as disappointing as before, only knowing how to show off with his fancy poems. Xuan'er is the one who showed great improvement. What he told me was similar to what Feng'er had said.
I believe that this must be Wanying's doing after having seen how much I favour Feng'er and Jiao'er. She now finally decided to put some effort into properly educating the children and have Xuan'er pay more attention to his studies. Otherwise, he would still be as ignorant as before."
Fu Qiuning smiled, "This is very good. I must congratulate Lord Husband."
When Yu Jie brought in the tea, she took over and personally laid the teacup before Jin Fengju.
Jin Fengju blew gently on his tea to cool it down. He took his time to think before saying, "I am not worried about your studies. Your mother has supervised your education very well all this time. I only wish to know one thing. Has anyone bullied you at the clan school today?"
When Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao shook their heads, he smiled, "Good, I was afraid that those little bastards who didn't know better would bully my Feng'er and Jiao'er. I'm relieved to hear that this did not happen."
After nibbling on some more soybeans and peanuts, he stood up and said, "I shall not stay here tonight. I will be visiting the Old Ancestor next. Do you have any more of these good things? If you do, let me bring some to her."
"What good things? Do you plan to fool Old Madam with these things? I blush in shame on her behalf for having such a grandson," Fu Qiuning said half-jokingly.
Jin Fengju laughed, "The Old Ancestor lived a rich and noble life. What good thing has not passed her eyes? On the contrary, it is these little things that will please her most. That's right, are the clothes for the Mid-Autumn Banquet ready? You are not allowed to wear half new used clothes there or I shall lose face and be accused of being a wolf-hearted dog-lunged [1] person who tossed my first wife and children aside to fend for themselves."
Fu Qiuning thought: Didn't you, though? If Feng'er and Jiao'er had not unexpectedly exceeded your expectations, I would have been divorced by now, right? As for the children, who knew to which village they would have been tossed to by your good self.
Whenever she thought about it, Jin Fengju's previous behaviour has left her with cold teeth and a cold heart [2]. Therefore, no matter how much this person appeared gentle, considerate, and affectionate, or how cheerful and happy he was in her courtyard, Fu Qiuning could never let go of her wariness against him, let alone cultivate any real feelings for this temperamental man.
"It is all done," despite her misgivings, she remained humble and respectful on the surface.
Just then, Aunt Yu came in with a box of boiled young soybeans and peanuts. Jin Fengju checked its contents and, seeing that it was sufficiently full, nodded. He smiled at Fu Qiuning, "Looks like Aunt Yu is more generous. If it was you, I'd be lucky to take half a box with me."
"You eat our food, yet still wish to negotiate with me?" Fu Qiuning said through a forced smile as she sent Jin Fengju to the gate.
She watched until his back disappeared in the afterglow of the sunset before turning to Aunt Yu, "It is nearly time to make dinner. Go and make the arrangements. There's still a bit of hemming to do, I shall be done with them soon."
"Yes, this maid shall prepare dinner. As for the hem, this maid can finish it after dinner. There is not much left to sew," said Aunt Yu before leaving for the kitchen.
As for Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, with their bellies filled with beans and peanuts, they obediently returned to the study to review their homework. For a while, Night Breeze Pavilion was very peaceful.
In the blink of an eye, it was already time for the Mid-Autumn Banquet.
Early that morning, Old Madam Jin had someone invite the people from Night Breeze Pavilion over. When Luo Cui saw how busy Fu Qiuning, Aunt Yu and Yu Jie were, she laughed and said, "So busy? Old Madam intended to have Madam and the twins come over now. Since you are still so busy, this maid shall inform Old Madam that you will arrive in the afternoon. However, please do not delay beyond that. This maid is afraid that Old Madam will personally come and invite Madam."
Fu Qiuning quickly thanked Luo Cui and said she wouldn't dare to delay. Luo Cui then smiled and left, taking a packet of Yu Jie's freshly made osmanthus flower cake with her.
Since they had to attend the family banquet that evening, Yu Jie prepared a simple meal of rice and Stir-fried Autumn Cucumber with Eggs. Since they were expecting a large meal that evening, it was fine not to eat until they were full. Fu Qiuning hastily informed the twins not to mention this in front of the Old Madam. After all, they could not afford to make that person lose face. After the simple lunch, the family changed their clothes and set off cheerfully.
This time, they found Jin Ming waiting for them alone outside of Yong Cui Garden. He smiled when the group came out and came over to greet them. Jin Changfeng said, "Jin Ming, we have already gone there once and know the way now, so why did father send you over again?"
Jin Ming glanced at Fu Qiuning. Seeing her calm yet slightly interested expression, he could not help the tiny laughter that escaped him and said, "According to Master, this directionally challenged person must traverse the same route several times before they would know how to get to a place on their own. This is only Madam, Young Master and Young Miss's second time visiting Health & Longevity Court. Therefore, you might not know the way yet. Master is still at the imperial court, therefore, he had specially ordered this servant to return earlier and escort Madam, Young Master and Young Miss."
Fu Qiuning nearly tripped and fell on her face. She thought: How wonderful. This time, I've lost face before the steward too.
She was in the middle of stewing over the humiliation when Jin Changfeng asked, "The imperial court? Is Father standing before the emperor? When will he return?"
"Who knows?" Jin Ming grinned, "It all depends on the emperor, ah. However, today is Mid-Autumn and the emperor is wise. Therefore, he would not keep the Young Marquis too long."
Fu Qiuning's heart jumped as she lightly asked, "If Lord Husband sent you back, does he have any trusted people beside him? To hold him back at such a time, does the emperor have some urgent task for him? Surely it is not yet another errand that would have him rush about outside?" She never used to pay attention to such things. However, ever since Jin Fengju insinuated that Prince Hong might be losing his power soon, she could not help but be a little concerned. She guessed that this feeling must have been due to some residual feelings left by the original owner of this body towards Zhenjiang Palace.
"How would there be none? Master has quite a few capable people around him. It's just that these days, Master tends to bring this one with him more often when he visits Night Breeze Pavilion, which is why Madam has not seen the others." Jin Ming cheerfully revealed this to Fu Qiuning. "His Majesty has been feeling very happy these days and even praised Prince Rong's diligence a few days ago. The prince had grown more mature and stable over the years and is now worthy to take on greater responsibilities now. The emperor had Young Marquis and His Highness stay at the palace for lunch. They likely have not left the palace yet.
In a word, His Majesty is in a cheerful mood today. This servant only feared that Prince Rong would also pull the Young Marquis to his palace after lunch and will only let him go at twilight at the earliest."
Fu Qiuning nodded. She thought: Has the Emperor fully made up his mind to make Prince Rong the crown prince? Otherwise, he would not have used the words ''worthy to take on greater responsibilities". Although this phrase may be used to praise talented people, when used to describe a royal prince, there was no way it would not make people think twice. However, hasn't Prince Lie been in the limelight lately? The Emperor appeared to favour him over Prince Rong and Prince Hong, but then again, the Emperor was not on his death bed yet, and positions could still be reshuffled again.
As she continued to ponder, she could not help but think back to those TV shows back in her modern days. She remembered how Emperor Kangxi delayed the appointment of the next crown prince after abolishing the second crown prince. It was only after his sons had exposed their true natures before him that he finally selected Yongzheng to be the next emperor. This Yongzheng kept his sharpness hidden and did his work properly. Fu Qiuning shivered: Surely this emperor would not be like Emperor Kangxi and bait his sons with his words, only to watch them compete with cold eyes, right?"
She could not help but felt that the politics of this era was just too dark and scary, ah! Then again… women in her position, the trapped hothouse flowers of noble houses, had nothing to do with the politics of this world. Moreover, Jin Fengju was not the sort who would not understand these palace intrigues. Therefore, she relaxed a little and privately tried to breathe calmly when a burst of laughter interrupted her thoughts. She looked up and found that they were right outside Health & Longevity Court.
They hastily stepped in and found that the entire female side of the marquisate family was already gathered inside. As soon as the ladies saw Fu Qiuning, Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, several people came forward and greeted them with false warmth.
The Old Madam called Fu Qiuning forward to say, "When the curtains lifted just now, I saw someone that looked like Jin Ming. Has Fengju returned? Why have you not let him come see me?"
Fu Qiuning laughed, "If the Young Marquis has returned, what could stop him from greeting Old Ancestor first? Unfortunately, he has not yet returned. Jin Ming was sent by the Young Marquis to assist Second Old Master. I heard that the emperor held a banquet for his subjects and the Young Marquis is required to attend along with Prince Rong. It is unclear when he will return."
She did not mention anything about being so directionally challenged that Jin Fengju had specially sent someone to guide her party. Aside from being too shameful, who knew how much hate and jealousy she would attract.
"Oh, so His Majesty held another banquet, ah." The Old Madam nodded, her gaze moving to stare out the window. In a soft voice, she said, "Ever since his grandfather was appointed as Marquis, our family had been favoured by the imperial family. However, although imperial favour is good, there are times when it is best to withdraw and retreat from the light, ah. Being too outstanding is like pouring oil onto a roaring fire. One could accidentally burn themselves. Won't that kind of pain be too shattering?"
Suddenly, she shook herself, seemingly remembering that saying such things on such a day would be too inauspicious. She hastily buried her emotions with a laugh and continued, "I am getting old, what am I saying on such a day? How awkward, ah."
Fu Qiuning smiled back and said, "It is not awkward, Old Ancestor has foresight, and being far-sighted in times of peace is good. The Young Marquis's lofty achievements today must be due to him being educated by yourself and the Elder Madam." After a quick look around, she lightly changed the subject. "What happened to that large partition screen? Here I thought I felt like something was missing in this room, and it turned out that partition screen is not here."
Old Madam Jin smiled, "There are more people for today's banquet than during the Dragon Boat Festival. The room would inevitably be crowded, therefore I had them put it away. Doesn't the room look much brighter?"
Fu Qiuning naturally echoed the praise. When she saw Jiang Wanying coming, she went elsewhere, and after talking to some other women of the clan, she sat down in some unobtrusive corner. As for Jin Changfeng and Jin Changjiao, they were outside playing with some of the clan children.
Suddenly, they heard someone calling from outside, "The Young Master is entering."
Fu Qiuning raised her eyes to the door and saw Jin Fengju enter, wearing an autumn-coloured [3] shirt, draped in lake green satin cloak and coming into the room on elegant steps. As the people in the room surged forward, his cloak was untied and greetings were made. It really did look like a bunch of stars circling around the moon. However, she noticed Jin Fengju's eyes casting around the crowd for something.
She stepped back in a slight panic, turning away to speak to a daughter-in-law from a branch side of the clan. She knew that she could not avoid being seen by that person. However, so long as he does not do something as stupid as shouting 'Qiuning' in public, it would be fine. She was well and truly fed up with everyone's attention.
Jin Fengju also had no idea what came over him. He seemingly did not realise his inappropriate actions. It's just… the moment he stepped into the room, his eyes began to subconsciously search for Fu Qiuning. He had already caught sight of the twins in the courtyard outside and was certain that she was here.
Sure enough, after sweeping his gaze across the room twice, he found her chatting to someone in the most inconspicuous corner. He could not help but secretly snicker. However, he also understood why Fu Qiuning had done this and withdrew his glance.
Right then, he heard Old Madam Jin call him over and he quickly walked up to her to say, "Old Ancestor looks really good today. As someone who enjoys a lively atmosphere, you must be happy to have so many people here today."
He took a seat as he spoke and took a sip from the cup of tea he received from Cai Yun.
