A/N: This chapter contains some action and a new piece of information about the new enemies that are going to appear soon. Na yonsu may come off as kinda harsh but i believe that's part of her personality.
Quick note: the italics with"..." are speech from memories and the italics with '...' are thoughts in case you get or got confused I wanted to specify that.
I do not own the "Nobleese" i just own this story and my OCs.
Chapter 14: To keep secrets is to survive
As Sangeen and Na Yonsu were running fast on the building's rooftops they sensed some presences. They were happy to find out that they were their allies. They stopped on a roof top and allowed them to catch up; even though they both knew that those two could definitely outrun them if they wanted.
The house wasn't too far away from downtown Seoul and that combining with their speed was the perfect combination for responding to things like this. Really by this point it was like three minutes away.
"Takeo, M-21 why are you here?" was Na Yonsu's more steep approach.
"We received word from your director that there has been a situation in this part of the city so naturally we came to check" answered Takeo unfazed, while Bart was sitting silently and waiting for them to start running again.
The woman answered in her usual manner and declined the need for help. After all, as she said "It's just a fire by gas leak".
"Tao's data says otherwise" said Bart without hiding his impatience "The area had been cleaned off of any gas supply system about a month ago"
"Then what started the big fire there?" asked Sangeen silently but Bart heard him.
"Well we are not going to find out if we stall here more" and with that the grey haired of the two guys started moving again.
"Wait Bart! Wait for me!" said Takeo in a hurry as he followed him "Come on guys" and he was jumping to the next rooftop.
The couple looked at each other "Did he call M-21 with a name? Bart, was it?"
"Hmm, I don't know but think we should hurry Na Yonsu if we don't want to miss the fun"
…back at Frankenstein's house…
Tao was typing furiously, like he hated his own keyboard. His eyes were concentrated onto the screen and he was trying to find every angle from every camera on the streets of Seoul. While he was doing that, a set of footsteps came lightly from behind.
Without turning Tao knew who it was "Hey Sara"
"Tao" was the only thing she said to greet him, and that too sounded exhausted to Tao but he didn't say anything on the matter.
"How are things?" came Frankenstein's steady-commander voice after a little while.
"Up until now there are no sights of anyone setting the fire on that district. Not an hour ago, not ten minutes ago, not now; I'm having both timelines on the screens, past and present, and I have yet to find something suspicious"
As the three of them were looking at the monitors the fire looked indeed like it just came to life at the certain block, no burn trails, and according to the weather analytics in a third screen, no wind was up tonight. It did look like a fire caused by gas leak. But Tao had said that there weren't any gas sources in that area.
"Tao"
"Huh?" Tao wasted no further energy answering to Sara as he was multitasking three different things but as she didn't elaborate he asked again "What is it?"
"That area…looks completely desolated" she said slowly while watching the screen as if she had been hypnotized.
"Yes, it was because of the missiles. It happened almost four months ago" he turned to Frankenstein for a mere second "Didn't you tell her?"
"I did, but I spared her too much of the details"
"The missiles huh?" her eyes were practically glued to the screens and the fire.
"Sara?"
She didn't answer; at least not immediately. Tao thought that she should have really used a good sleep. She sounded exhausted. Perhaps she had worked herself more than she should have.
"There is only one way people definately are not expecting to be attacked"
"Above" she said frailly.
Frankenstein was giving his full attention now.
She raised her chin to the screen of the already recorded timeline where it showed the starting of the fire "It could have come from above. Just like the missiles"
Tao then was desperately trying to find another CCTV feed that would show the sky at that time. A security camera on a rooftop, guarding the entrance of it, helped. He downloaded the video from the server that he hacked simultaneously and made the video cleaner.
Indeed there was an instant when a small object passed through the night, too small and too fast for the ordinary eye to catch it. A trail of smoke that soon disappeared in the wind was the only thing that showed anything was there at all.
Tao rewinded the video and played the exact moment slowly. The time was the right one. The angle fit. The cause of the fire was that flying object that came from South-East.
"Well, well…It looks like somebody did indeed put the fire there on purpose. But why? The area is practically abandoned and there is no use to set an already crumbling building on fire" was Tao's thoughts that he choose to express out loud.
"Look at you Sara, you made a good guess" said Frankenstein.
Sara raised her eyebrow and turned her head slowly "I don't get where that suggestive tone is going. You can think what you want but if you have something to say on the matter, say it"
"Now, now don't be so defensive…I was merely praising you" he answered with a big smile and a tone that Tao recognized as the I-am playing-with-my-prey voice.
"Huh…It sounded more of an accusation" she scoffed.
"Well, that too. Can't be too careful; especially now that this is happen-…" suddenly his eyes shot up and he looked at the monitor and then at Tao.
"What is it boss?"
"Could it be?" he looked back at Sara expectedly but she only looked at him with wondering eyes.
He wasted no time getting to the radio "Bart, Takeo do you copy?"
The radio answered "Boss we copy you what is it?"
"Someone set fire there on purpose; it's not like there is anything of value there or any citizens! It was probably to draw you in. Be careful!"
His voice was strangely strained. He knew that himself. Ever since he lost contact with his Master he was becoming two things: paranoid about finding him and about protecting whatever family he got left.
"I thought that too boss but...We are here but there is nobody in sight"
Frankenstein tsked and went back to the cameras. Tao understood without being told and started going around the area with different angles. The footage showed nothing suspicious and there wasn't much of movement except the fire that was slowly but surely consuming the building. The fact that there were not many cameras in the area to begin with, due to the destroyed area, wasn't helping either.
The latest standard protocol was, in cases like this, to determine whether there was a threat before calling the firefighters in order to avoid unessecerily endangering them.
It was evident that they were expecting something like this to happen sooner or later and the whole family was sitting at the edge of their seats, so to speak, for quite some time waiting for the inevitable to happen.
Far behind in the computer room, Sara was making her exit. She wanted to help them but she didn't know exactly how. She had an idea of what was happening. Someone was coming out of their cave. 'Now of all times!'
As she was wandering around the living room, her eye fell on a picture at the farthest corner. On a small table there was a small picture that showed the trio comrades together. They looked so happy…but then she saw it. The reason of the events happening.
'Of course. Sentimental and psychological'
She ran back to the room where the other two were, the picture in her hand. She remembered.
"Who else lives here?"
"Oh it's me, Takeo, that you already met, and M-21"
"M-21?! That doesn't sound like an actual name"
"Yeah…long story"
"Where are they now?"
"Hehehe…wouldn't you like to know?"
Sara raised an eyebrow "What?"
"Well let's say they went to work. Not far from here; a few blocks actually" Tao then added "So please forgive me for saying this but if you try anything I can call for backup and they will show up right away"
"Heh" she said as she took a good look at the stand that was holding the saline bag "I wouldn't dream of it"
She opened the door finding Frankenstein talking with Takeo through the radio disagreeing about whether they should stay there or leave. It didn't even look like they noticed she left the room in the first place.
'That must be it. It looked like a place they would be, so it must be it'
"Frankenstein" she said with enough force to make the said scientist turn his head at her but still not completely face her "Where is this place?" she asked, picture in hand still.
Frankenstein though was too absorbed in the conversation he was having with the other end of the radio so he just shushed her and continued telling Takeo that it would be best to stay away and wait for Frankenstein to come and back them up in case someone too strong was to appear.
"Tao look they might be…"
"Sara, wait a minute, I have to scan the area again. There might be a clue as to where they are coming from" his voice was full of anxiety. It was like they were in another reality right now.
"Damn" She felt that they were really wasting time. So, in a lapse of better judgment, she fled the room.
She was exhausted but a new determination was born in her and with what little she remembered about it, she left abruptly. Through the living room balcony. Heading west.
Getting out never felt more right.
…At the eastern side of Seoul…and at the same time in Tao's computer room...
Na Yonsu and Sangeen were on alert since the other two got signal from Frankenstein that there was someone who had deliberately set fire there. Right now they were arguing with Frankenstein. Na Yonsu was wondering if it was time to inform their head of KSA about it. She was worried that they had to deal with the fire at least, before it got out of control.
"Frankenstein if we leave here they might come and attack civilians"
"If they wanted you there, it had to be for another reason. They would have come to you by now. We scanned the area again and again. You should leave already"
Tao was agreeing on that "Yeah guys, we have to call the fire department too"
Takeo and Bart looked at each other and then at the two KSA agents. They were there for almost 10 minutes now and nobody had showed up. It was suspicious why they drew them like that and not come to fight them.
With a sigh Bart talked "We are coming home"
Takeo followed Bart after he told Sangeen to call them if anything happened.
Tao leaned back in his chair for a little while "It looks like it was meant as a decoy"
Frankenstein had one curled finger on his cheek while thinking. Eventually he responded "I'm almost sure that it was for decoy but for what? The security systems are not alerted, yet i have a bad feeling"
On their way back, almost two minutes away from their home Takeo got curious "Tao, how did you figure out they started the fire?"
"Actually Sara gave a suggestion so I found a camera that showed a different angle from what we were scanning before. It was a good guess, right Sara?" he turned to her only to find her absent.
Frankenstein finally turned too and found nothing more than a picture in a frame onto a small table and the door open. 'Could she have gone to sleep?'
Frankenstein took the picture that froze. He knew that place very well. The school. He built it in honor of his Master. 'Could it be that Sara…'
"Tao show me the school"
Without delay Tao did as he was asked and with a few clicks the camera footage of Ye-Ran high school was on screen. At first everything looked normal but a second later a few shadows were seen to approach the front yard and getting in with ease.
"I'm going to kill them!" shouted Frankenstein and the dark energy was already circling him.
Tao spoke with Takeo on the radio, telling him that the fire was the decoy and that they were after the school. Takeo said that they would hurry.
"Hurry up faster!" said Tao but Frankenstein was already out.
Tao picked the frame and looked at the picture. He remembered vaguely Sara trying to tell him and Frankenstein something a few minutes ago but they ignored her. 'Was she trying to warn us?'
He was now watching the camera footage from around the entire area of the neighborhood and the school. There she was, in front of the gates. This was going to be a long night.
…Ye-Ran high school…2 minutes before Frankenstein arrives…
It looked like the gates were intact. So they jumped over them. But how did they get past the alarm and the security of Tao? Because she was sure that, that certain computer maniac definitely had a place like this secured if she could tell by his computer room.
Sara thought 'Oh what the hell' and jumped over it too. Not the greatest idea she ever had. The nausea was killing her head. She had run all the way there and now she was feeling the effects on her. She even turned wrong once to her way there. Thankfuly she got there fast enough.
Really what was she doing here? So what if the school they were working in was destroyed? Why did she even care?
No, it wasn't about the school. It was about what it represented; a new beginning and a new life. Those people, Bart, deserved it more than anyone. She wouldn't let anyone destroy that.
She approached quickly. It felt weird because she couldn't feel any other presences no matter how hard she tried. She did feel though an immense amount of electrical energy. But that could meant nothing really. It was the same feeling a block away from here, near the convenience store. Was she losing her mind? Those mixed signals were perhaps the result of exhaustion.
Truly she should have been in bed right now…
And then she heard it. They were moving inside the building. Up there, from the opened window. How did they open it without breaking it? No time to wonder. She climbed with some effort and got in.
Inside the dark room was one person. She quickly brought forth her energy, materializing it to her hands and attacked. The other presence didn't anticipate her and didn't have time to react. They fell under her energy blades that were nowhere near the composed form she used to morph them before. She was slipping concentration dangerously fast. So fast that she missed the door opening and got her right shoulder slightly impaled by a big metal rod.
She screamed and then she saw red beady eyes looking at her, analyzing her. She hated that. With one last scream she drove the now raw energy of hers into the other one without hesitation. She understood now why she couldn't feel anything. They were machines. Robots. But what did robots wanted in a school? No matter what, she had an idea who might have sent them. The Union.
But they were gone…no?
She couldn't think. And she still had to get the damn metal rod out of her. The blood was too much and now it was coming out of her nose too. 'I pushed myself too much. Damn…If Frankenstein doesn't kill me out of suspicion…he will definitely have my hide for neglecting my health'
She tried to stand but it was futile. Another person came into the office. It was a robot again. It approached her and scanned her.
[MISSION SIX FAILED. PROJECT RED FOUND]
Sara felt so annoyed with the situation. She spit a mix of saliva and blood on the face of the robot "Fuck off" she said in an exhausted voice. Her eyelids trembled and she was wondering if her energy would take over, like it did so many years ago.
Oh how she wished she could blast that thing in the face.
It actually went to grab her.
[RETRIEVE PROJECT RED]
"Oh no, you don't!"
A shot was heard and the thing fell down in front of her. She fell down too but luckily a hand was there to catch her fall. Takeo got in from the door, Bart from the window.
"Huh, good shot Takeo" said Bart as he eased Sara onto the floor "We have to wrap her up, although I think she won't be able to dodge Frankenstein's care this time"
Takeo had managed to shoot the thing before they even got into the office and now that they were, they looked at the mess. More of a thief rummaging around for something than a careful spy. The whole thing was kind of sloppy for a spy.
As Takeo retrieved the first aid kit from a cupboard in the office he wondered why take all the time to set fire, getting them away from the school, getting under Tao's radar – Tao was sure pissed about it – only to be so tacky when they got to Frankenstein's office.
Suddenly both Takeo and Bart turned their heads to the way the front entrance was. They heard noise. They looked at each other. Takeo nodded.
"Go, I'll see to her care"
Bart didn't have to be told twice. He leaped off the window only to see four other, almost identical, figures approaching.
"Tao, can you see them?"
"Only from the CCTV footage. They apparently have the ability to pass undetected from my special radar. and apparently they were proposely hiding while coming to the school. They knew that we had cameras installed around here"
Bart thought that Tao sounded really resentful at the moment.
"Huh...they don;t seem to care about that now...They are oout in the open"
"Be careful Bart. We don't know what else they can do"
"Got it"
He got his claws ready. His eyes were shining in the moonlight. His fangs were seen and making his face appear threatening. As the four figures jumped to him each one separately yelled mechanically.
[PROJECT WOLF M-21 DETECTED. RETRIEVE PROJECT WOLF M-21]
At that he froze. There it was. That codename again. Why couldn't he just be a person and not a damn code?! He felt furious and jumped on to them. He impaled through the first from the right, got the head from the close left smashed. As the other two came onto him reciting the same order with his Union code he summoned enough power to annihilate both of them at once with his fist.
The werewolf power in his veins was getting easier to use. And the more he didn't like it, the more he understood that he needed it, especially right now that he heard some more coming to his way. Just how many had circled the area?
As if Tao had read his mind he said through the communications "Bart it looks like there are five more coming at you. It looks like they are slightly different than the others"
"Heh…great. 'Cause I had some energy to spare to those clowns"
As they came behind him, spiky metal rods ready to stab him, they were saying the same thing still.
[RETRIEVE PROJECT WOLF M-21]
"Damn you to hell you anthropomorphic trashcans!"
Bart turned in time to see Frankenstein furious with his dark energy practically engulfing him. One could tell that at that moment Frankenstein was the epitome of anger incarnated. But, for some strange reason, Bart didn't feel any fear at that time; on the contrary he, as much as Takeo that was on the edge of the office window, felt safe. They knew. He was there to protect them.
With one swift move the angry scientist approached the enemies and in a glimpse of an eye, annihilated them. Limps flew away from bodies, wires getting cut and batteries getting blasted. Pieces of them were the only remains. Bart and Takeo, who came down to the yard by now, stood in front of the scene in awe. Even without using the Dark Spear in its final form, he was a power to be reckoned. As formidable as ever.
As Frankenstein was calming himself down, he thought that maybe he had gone a little bit over the top for those machines, but one couldn't deny that it must have been due to the building tension of all the recent events. And maybe because his family was in danger. Truth be told…he would not stand it to lose another one. He mentally slapped himself. No, his Master wasn't dead, he was just missing.
"Frankenstein, are you alright?"
"Ah…yes. It looks like they were here ready to assist. How many did actually infiltrate the school grounds?"
Takeo was checking his gunsas he answered "Three at first and then four and the last bunch were five. All in all, twelve. It looks like they were looking for something. The drawers were all opened, the documents were all messed up – hey where are you…?"
"Sara is still up there" said Bart as he headed back to the building.
"Ah…shit. Yeah she is not doing too good Frankenstein"
"Really?" sounded the sarcastic edge of the scientist's voice "How so?"
…somewhere far away from South Korea…
"Mission 6 failed sir. We couldn't find the documents we were looking for"
"Oh well, Mission 6 was going to be a failure and a waste of time anyway" a figure said while moving his right arm dismissively "What about Mission 7?"
"Yes" said the employee, presenting his tablet to the upper executive "Collecting fighting and physiology data about the M-21 experiment as well as the DA-5 member Takeo was successful sir. But it is also limited"
"It's okay. One step at the time. So we didn't collect M-21. What about Project Red? I assume you weren't successful to capture her"
"Unfortunately sir. The data though showed that she was in a very critical condition even before the encounter with the trackers sir" another image appeared at the tablet screen "Never the less it looked like she had tolerance enough in order to end two of the trackers. One though managed to impale her"
"Huh…she must have been tired if she let that happen" he held his chin thinking "Where all the others destroyed by M-21 and Takeo?"
"No sir. The last reinforcements were…completely annihilated" said the slim man in hesitation "They weren't even able to transmit data as they were utterly destroyed within a few seconds. Guesses are there was one more there, far stronger and faster"
The upper executive gave the tablet back and dismissed the other man from the room. Thinking about the events that had just occurred. A very strong opponent managed to annihilate the trackers. It was just getting interesting.
"I wonder, should secrets be revealed?"
He stood up from the chair he had been occupying for some time now "Hehehe it's so interesting…Let's see how our guests are doing"
…Frankenstein's house…
"So, Sara couldn't avoid getting treated by Frankenstein in the end huh?" said the gunman as he was cleaning his weapons while on bed; his case was open to reveal only a small part of his gun collection. He was always so careful with them.
Tao was right on the bed next to Takeo and was currently taking a break from the surveillance. Of course he set new parameters and put more sensors around the area just to be sure. But it wasn't like him to be doing nothing; he was examinating the head of one of the trackers that Frankenstein didn't get his hands – or claws – on. The structure was simple yet it didn't reveal much. Tao put some cables in it and connected it with his personal laptop in order to really invade the database of the thing. He thought that maybe he should send some files to Haji and see if maybe the central computer was going to help.
Takeo noticed that Tao hadn't said a word for more than 40 minutes now and he figured that his friend must have been too absorbed in what he was doing. He got up after he put his guns in the case.
"I'm going to prepare something to eat, do you want anything?"
Tao's only response was the typing sound of his keyboard.
"Tao"
Still nothing. Takeo sighed and turned to leave but before that he thought of doing an experiment.
"I found the latest missile software of the Chinese army in an underground dealing-…"
"Where?!" Tao raised his head suddenly.
"Nowhere, you bumphead. There is no underground dealer with it. I think you should take a break from the screen Tao. Get out of here and have a sandwich or something" he said frustratingly.
Tao smiled mischievously "Can't you bring the sandwich here?"
"No. Get your skinny ass off the bed and take an actual break"
Tao contemplated his options. He could ignore Takeo but he knew that he wouldn't get that snack "Okay, you win. But, I will let it keep searching so it will notify me just in case hehehe"
As they got to the kitchen, they saw Frankenstein sitting there, drinking tea. Bart was nowhere to be found.
As soon as they all sat down, Frankenstein informed them that he had made arrangements with Gejuntel about some reinforcements. More specifically he had asked that in due time some people may be necessary to come from Lukedonia in order to assist them. The irony was that he had done so even before this night and its events. As if he could sense that something was bound to happen. He hated when he was right like that.
"So who will come?" said Tao in excitement.
"I left that decision to them. It is time some of them take some important decisions; those, which I can't take for them. Besides I will soon have to go back to the base with Haji."
Both men frowned. It wasn't so long ago that he came home and he had to leave.
"Relax you two, I'm not leaving tomorrow" Frankenstein said as soon as he saw their faces.
Silence followed for a while but it wasn't awkward. The two younger men seemed a little relieved. Frankenstein raised his teacup to drink the last of his tea as the others were finishing their snacks. The clink of the teacup as it was put down the saucer grabbed the attention of them.
"Sara is weak" Frankenstein was not sure why but he had expected the worried faces that his boys were making at the hearing of these news but that wasn't the whole truth. In fact Frankenstein didn't tell them that she was actually sick. "Actually I had a suspicion since the first time she had a nosebleed but after the training when she came out of the bathroom, she looked ghostly pale. And she rushed to the bathroom after the training session. So I got more suspicious.I proceeded getting in the bathroom after her and I found…nothing"
He paused to arrange his words. He had to be careful not to reveal too much. He had a feeling that Sara wouldn't want others to know how critical it was. He briefly wondered if she actually was aware of how bad it was.
"When I say 'nothing', I mean not even a speck of dust. The sink, the bathtub, the floor and the toilet were all cleaned with chlorine. It was way too clean. As if there was something to hide"
He looked at the others. They were listening to him without breaking eye contact with his face.
"But I could smell it still. The smell of blood…And now that I had the chance to take a closer look at her I know why Conrad, the head scientist, was arranging for her often sleeping periods. It was essential for her health. Looks like the way her powers were activated was too much for her body. I don't have enough data yet and I doubt that she will share anything crucial with me or even let me do some specific tests and examine her but…I don't know if she will be able to guide us to Master and…not take too much damage" 'Or survive'
The last sentence was said with dread as he made the mental correction to himself. Frankenstein might not have liked her as much at the beginning but he didn't know if he could sacrifice her in order to find his Master. He could have, of course but…how would Bart react; or even his Master…What would he say if he ever found out that he had deliberately sacrificed someone like that in order to find him? Would he be disappointed with him? Ashamed of him? {Just let her run out so we won't have to endure that energy of hers}
Well, at least he knew what the retched abominations were thinking.
"Can't you do anything?" asked Takeo.
"I will do what I can for now. As long as she is sleeping I can treat her but I'm not so sure as to how we can proceed. If she doesn't cooperate, I don't know how we are going to be able to-…"
"I'm back" sounded Bart from the door. They turned and looked at him.
After the attack, Bart took a list of all the kids that were in the school and made it a point to check every single one of them to see if their addresses had been compromised during the break in of the robots. It took him less than 45 minutes.
"Everything alright I suppose?"
"Yes Frankenstein. I also went to the school after I finished patrolling the houses. Nothing out of suscpicion. Checked even an extra mile radius from the original plan"
"I see. Thank you"
"Don't mention it. How is Sara?"
At that he felt that the tension in the room went double.
"What?" he asked immediately as he felt the change in the air even though it was barely noticeable.
"Relax Bart" said Frankenstein with confidence in his voice "She is stable for now. She was quite weak when she went out there. Really what could she been thinking?"
"Huh" said Bart like he was agreeing "That was stupid"
"Oh" said Tao in a suggestive tone "I bet you would not say that to her face though hihihi"
"Why? You think I'm afraid of her? Or do you think I will be easy on her because she is hurt?" he said in a neutral way but paused and turned to the scientist "She is just hurt right?"
Frankenstein couldn't help but genuinely smile a little bit "She is in fact extremely hurt and weakened but she is stable for now. Don't worry Bart"
At that Bart turned away from him and started making himself something to eat "I didn't say that I'm worried"
"Uh-huh…Sure" said Tao while snickering and barely avoiding a fork that came flying from his left.
Frankenstein didn't say anything else regarding Sara's condition.
After some minutes he left those three, after he made them promise not to use the cutlery as throwing balls, and went to the lab to check on Sara.
As he was approaching her, he felt a terrible headache but at the same time he felt him. His Master was trying to connect with him he was sure and then…nothing. The headache gone now and no voice this time. Just an image in his head of his Master looking at him and then even that was gone like smoke that was cleared from the wind. And in its place he saw Sara looking at him with an expression that he hadn't seen on her up until that point. She was awake. She was looking at him with serenity.
"If you had a secret, what would you do?"
To be continued...
A/N: I don't know much about the way Seoul is built. I tried to base the description based on what I had seen in the manwha. I hope you didn't get confused. I also have the feelingthat the guys would be able to run from home to the city in a couple of minutes since they are so much stronger after training for so long.
So we are getting a peak at the enemy a little bit. So How did you like that interaction?
Thanks to "xxx-NyanMaru-xxx" for following this story ^_^
