SPOILERS!!!
Hey everyone, I was happy to see so many of you were thrilled to know that this this story is still very much alive. Again I do apologize for such a long chapter drought. But I do hope to be quite active with this story, with the newly released Metroid Dread, and the release of Halo Infinite in the approaching months. I have put most of my other story projects on the back burner. One of the story projects I speak of will be a sequel to this story. That will focus more on Samus's point of view. Depending on how I end this story. But I am definitely hoping to do a sequel to this story in some sort of way, so keep your eyes out for that when this one is completed. ;)
SPOILER WARNING!!!!!
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS!!!!!!!!
MAJOR METROID DREAD SPOILERS!!!
The next couple chapters will be long, and full of Metroid Dread spoilers, so I highly recommend not reading any of this chapter if you have not completed the game!
I am aware that Adam was not communicating with Samus during the game. But in order to keep the Spartans involved with Samus's mission I am having Adam actually communicate with her, for the most part. While hinting at Raven Beak's control.
Chief walked with Arbiter back to camp where all human personnel, and a few Sangheili, stood in confusion, some with anger.
"That more trouble, than help, bounty hunter, finally take flight?" Commander Palmer scoffed. It was a question, but it came out as a rude comment.
John did his best not to glare at the Commander as Arbiter gestured for his Sangheili members to be at ease.
"Why the fuck did Samus leave? She said she was staying here a while longer!" Kelly ignored the Commander's comments, and focused her attention on her leader.
"I let her go." The team leader replied with no emotion.
"Why?" Halsey asked out of curiosity wondering how her favourite Spartan was coping with letting his foundling go back into dangerous isolation of the bounty world.
"We could not keep Samus from her duties any longer. She has the best chance of picking up on any distress signals from Infinity. Samus had to be set free." John replied simply.
"You speak as if you set a wild creature free or something." Buck thought aloud, while the Commander shook her head at him with a groan.
"Samus practically is a feral creature... she's a dangerous criminal, you don't set criminals free." Commander Palmer said walking over to Chief. "You didn't think to put some of our UNSC personal on her ship in the event that she actually does locate the Infinity?"
"Samus had alternative motives. As you stated Commander, she is wanted. Samus is merely scanning for signs of the Infinity, while also watching for the Federation that is after her. As well as attending to other distress calls." He stared down challenging the Commander standing in front of him. "I did not feel it would be wise for me to board Samus's ship, possibly encountering one of her dangerous missions in the middle of our current crisis situation."
Sarah continued to glare into the aging deep blue eyes, she knew Master Chief proved a good point though she did not want to admit it. "Return to your designated tents..." her tone dripped with venom as she quickly exited the conversation. "Just remember if Samus decides to bounce back into our ranks after her little escape to death planet or wherever her little ship takes her. She will be dealt with and prosecuted by the UNSC. I wouldn't be surprised if ONI stepped in to experiment on that alien brat." Sarah just had to dig that hole of dread deeper in the Petty Officer.
Letting that warning from the Commander haunt him, Master Chief obeyed the Commander with the rest of the camp, returning to their tents. If it came to that situation with his adopted daughter being at risk in the presence of the UNSC, and ONI, he would protect her, no matter the costs.
Upon entering the tent, glares of disapproval continued to point at the Spartan leader. Clearly the others on the team did not approve of letting Samus go.
"I can't believe you just let her go like that. Again!" Kelly folded her arms.
"Samus left us unexpectedly the last time, I did not let her go then, she went on her own terms." Chief replied walking to his cot.
"Whatever. You couldn't have let us say goodbye to Samus?" Kelly scoffed sitting down.
"Would you have let her leave if I did?" John cocked an eyebrow at the brunet.
"That's beside the point John. Who knows if Samus is going to be caught up in trials, put behind bars, what if she meets her match and dies?" Kelly listed off, of course her mind went straight to the worst that could happen to their foundling.
"That's not going to happen." John firmly replied, knowing those were all highly plausible, he believed his adopted daughter was truly more resilient than what others saw her as.
Kelly wanted to believe her leader but deep inside the dreadful thought of their young teen perishing, sickened her to her core. "You're not going to be the same without her John."
"Excuse me?" John was confused, did the speed runner know something he didn't. Was Samus in imminent danger that he wasn't aware of?
"The last time Samus left us you practically completely shut off the outside world. With the exception of communicating with us during missions." Kelly mentioned, catching the Doctor's attention.
"I will be fine Kelly. Let's just focus on getting rest, and getting in contact with the UNSC." Master Chief gestured for the team to lay down and rest.
Linda softened her eyes watching her leader lay down on his cot. She could feel the devastation of losing their foundling radiating off John even though he tried to hide it well.
Doctor Halsey seemed to pickup the exact same readings as the red headed Spartan.
As a day went by, Halsey's curiosity spiked wondering how John was handling the Cortana situation, without the distraction of his adopted daughter to focus on, and counter his mixed emotions for the evil AI. From what she could see, Kelly was correct about John avoiding speaking with others.
As the Spartans suited up, John began fidgeting with his helmet, setting the long range communication device Samus gave them each, so they could get a visual of the bounty hunter on their visors HUD.
"We're calling Samus after we check if the Commander has a game plan." Kelly told the Spartan leader as she led Linda and Fred out of the tent.
Chief sighed putting his helmet on, getting up from his cot to follow his team.
"John, can I speak with you." Halsey called out before the green Spartan could exit the tent.
"Ma'am?" Master Chief approached the one armed Doctor.
"You're tense, take a breath John. I just wanted to setup this grapple device Samus gifted you and put it on your arm. I also wanted to evaluate you. I can already see your demeanour has changed within the last day we've been without the bounty hunter." Cathrine gestured for the Spartan to sit on the cot the teen had previously used.
Being evaluated was not on Master Chief's to do list. "I don't have time for lengthy evaluations Ma'am..." John sat down allowing Doctor Halsey to attach the grapple hook to his arm.
"Then I will get straight to the point. Are you prepared to be paired with another AI if the moment arises?" Halsey replied catching John off guard.
"I'm not looking to be paired with another AI." Chief replied emotionlessly. He had no interest in tragically losing another AI. It was unorthodox to be paired with a new AI, it was risky especially with the corruption Cortana was currently spreading to as many AI's as possible.
"But it may come to that John. In order to delete Cortana, you will need the aid of an unlikely ally, likely another AI." Cathrine explained to the reluctant Spartan leader.
John kept silent, his preferred unlikely ally would be Samus, not another AI. Though the more he thought about it, the more he realized Samus may not be able to come to his aid when the time was right to rid of Cortana.
"Samus is a great ally, but as you said yourself, she has her own missions to attend. Your teen may not be able to come to your aid when you need her most. Just as you cannot do the same for her." Seems Doctor Halsey knew what her favourite Spartan was thinking.
Those last words stung Chief, knowing the Doctor was right on the mark of the fact he could not help Samus even if she desperately needed it. That was when he decides to leave the conversation to go find his team.
"John..." Cathrine sighed defeatedly as her Spartan Two exited the tent with no reply.
"Incoming transmission." Adam announced making Samus spring out of her exhausted state.
"Huh, oh, is it Infinite?" Samus now sat upright in her pilot's chair.
"Infinity?" Adam corrected the drowsy teen.
"Adam!" Samus hissed just wanting a damn answer from the AI.
"Negative, Lady." The AI's robotic voice calmly replied.
"Then who?" Samus was getting anxious, wondering if it was the Galactic Federation.
"Seems Blue Team already misses you." The robotic voice replied showing the transmission request.
"Already, I just left a day ago." Samus thought aloud, answering the call. "Chief?"
"You brat, you couldn't have said goodbye to the rest of us?!"
Samus blinked in surprise at the clearly upset Spartan's greeting. "Kelly, hello to you too. I'm sorry I left abruptly again, I should've said a proper goodbye. I would've said goodbye to you, but judging by the way you just greeted me I doubt you would've let me go."
"Probably not, but you're still a brat for leaving." Kelly scoffed at the teen.
"Incoming transmission." Adam interrupted.
The young teen laughed with a sigh, leaning back in her chair. "Well, I've been actively scanning for any signs of Infinity. I just caught a signal, Adam is still scanning to at least pinpoint the exact source of the signal..."
"Is there a guess at what could cause the signal?" John's voice was finally present in the conversation.
"It could be a number of things Chief. It could be the Galactic Federation, or a distress signal from a space station, a ship like Infinity, or it could possibly be from a planet. I haven't had a distress signal come from a planet in quite some time..." Samus replied going through the pattern of the signal on a different monitor.
"Just make sure you're not getting lured into a trap, Samus." Chief reminded the young bounty hunter.
Samus smiled. "Everything will be fine Chief, I will be back with you in no time."
John smiled, his daughter's optimism always seemed to draw a smile on his face. "Don't make a promise you can't keep Samus."
"What?" Samus was confused by her father figure's response.
"You always said that each encounter you have on a planet, tests your strength, and abilities. I don't want you worrying about us while your strength is being tested by unknown forces. You don't have a team, or a military to back you up. I want you to remember how much hidden strength you have under all your compassion, and use it in your time of need." John's words were encouraging, yet morbid in a sense. He was terrified of the thought of losing Samus, he was even more shook by the fact that if she did perish, he would most likely never know of her demise.
The motivation behind her father's words were heavy, but Samus understood the gravity of Chief's message. "I understand. I will never stop worrying about Blue Team, but I wont let my worry cloud my abilities Chief."
"Speaking of abilities. How come Chief gets a cool grapple hook and we don't?" Kelly complained changing the subject.
"I really don't have time to chat right now..." she sighed. "It's a simple human standard grappling system. I'm sure Doctor Halsey can easily craft replicas for you. I only had one on me, and it's of no use to me, I have my own grapple beam equipped in my suit." The teen sighed tiredly.
"Alright, I think that's enough complaints Kelly, the kid is exhausted." Fred could hear the exhaustion in the teen's replies.
"I think we've got a way off Sangheilios. We should catch up with the others in the camp." Linda mentioned to her team. "Samus, I wish you luck on your adventures. Please keep us up to date on whether or not that signal belongs to Infinity."
"Thanks Linda, hopefully that way off Sangheilios works out for you all. If I come across Infinity I will get a hold of you guys right away." Samus replied to the sharp shooter.
"Goodbye Samus, we're going to miss you until we reunite with you." Fred said his Goodbye's following the female Spartans up the hill from the sand pits.
"Bye guys." Samus smiled knowing Chief was still lingering. "Chief?"
"Samus, please be careful..."
Samus smiled softly. "I will Chief..." she ended the call, waiting for Adam to tell her the origins of the incoming transmission."
"Incoming message from Galactic Federation." Adam announced making Samus shake her head.
"You got to be fucking kidding me... Activate it Adam." Samus replied, both curious and nervous.
Watching the transmission video she almost jumped out of her pilot's chair. "The X is still living?! That's not possible!" She watched further as the video message explained that the Federation had sent in indestructible sample robots to investigate the unexplored planet. "Great... clearly you power hungry fools are still looking to harness the power of the X parasites..." she thought aloud.
"That may not be the case Lady, the E.M.M.I. have lost contact with the Federation. And with your unique genetics making you the only being with an immunity to the X. The Galactic Federation is requesting your aid to investigate." Adam explained showing the young bounty hunter the details.
"Hmm..." Samus was almost unamused as she engaged the slipspace drive after setting the coordinates for ZDR. She was more under the assumption that something suspicious was going on. "How do seemingly indestructible robots. All of a sudden, go MIA? If they're so indestructible why the hell did they lose contact?" She thought aloud.
Adam was going to comment, but withheld his thoughts to allow Samus to voice her opinions further.
"Funny how the Federation didn't contact me during Chief's wild goose chase for Cortana. And the couple days on Sangheilios. And nothing, not even a single consequence, for blowing up their station with a planet deliberately against their wishes." Samus apparently did think it was extremely suspicious. Wondering if her being an asset to the Galactic Federation was worth more than punishing her? Since the SA-X samples they wanted to harness were destroyed, the Federation no longer had any way of going against the parasite without someone who was immune to do their bidding for them.
"You will be entering ZDR's atmosphere." The ships computer announced pulling up a ten minute count down.
Adam felt the need to voice his opinions as Samus continued piloting. "The bounty for this mission does not seem appropriate.
Samus sighed, hitting the controls as she manoeuvred the ship around astroids.
"The risk clearly outweighs the reward." Adam continued.
"It's not about the reward, Adam. Why would I care about getting paid for this? I am doing this to make sure the X parasite does not escape further into the universe. I care about everyone's safety, not the payment." The teen replied accelerating towards the planet.
Adam would've nodded proudly in understanding if he could've. "Treat our lost assets with care, Lady."
"Entering planet atmosphere in T minus 10... 9... 8..."
"Adam, send a message to Blue Team."
"7... 6..."
"Tell them the signal wasn't the Infinity, and that we are landing on the an uncharted planet."
"5... 4..."
The teen held her breath closing her eyes momentarily as they closed in on the planet.
Adam acknowledged Samus's request by showing the teen that the transmission she requested was sent.
"3... 2... 1..."
Opening her eyes Samus punched the accelerator bursting through the atmosphere onto the planet's surface. Once landed the teen didn't hesitate too long, finding an elevator through gloomy weather.
"That elevator leads to the depths of an underground facility." The AI announced as Samus stepped in, activating the lift. "Signal quality is likely to be low. Re...mote... communication m...m...may pose a problem..."
Adam's words were correct. The connection was being lost the further Samus descended in the elevator, the more broken his words got with static.
"Try to con...nect... to the facility's... network when you reach the bottom. That way we can remain in contact. Any objections, Lady?"
Samus was still adjusting to having an AI partner involved in her bounty hunting. It was odd to have someone wanting to communicate with her throughout her mission. Usually she answered to no one but herself. With the exception of the occasional mission the Federation accompanied her on. Even then she usually stayed quiet.
Once at the bottom, the elevator doors slid open. Samus stepped out in a wondering manner, curious as she scanned the damp Chozo architecture and ruins. Before locking her sights on a more serious note. Immediately taking aim at the massive metal armour that stood on the other side of an old bridge. Walking toward the possible foe with a purpose, her cannon holding the massive metal being in place.
As soon as Samus halted in front of the Chozo looking creature it opened fire upon her. She quickly hit the deck sliding towards the warrior who in turn leapt at her. Samus quickly slid backwards as the the warrior leapt on the now crumbling bridge to the depths below. Leaping across to another bridge where the metal armour waited for her. This time she opened fire doing little to nothing to the approaching threat.
"Shit shit shit..." Samus cursed under her breath in a panic as the plasma beam did nothing to damage the warrior's shields.
The Chozo sent an electrical shockwave which Samus dodged easily. When close enough he went to strike the bounty hunter who countered his attack sending both of them back from each other.
Knowing the plasma beam would do nothing Samus finally fired a super missile at the hostile being, hitting him in the eye which only infuriated the Chozo warrior.
The warrior shot forward in a flash, lunging clutching the young Chozo warrior by her throat.
Samus grabbed the strong metal wrist, wriggling around, desperately trying to escape the clutches of the dangerous foe as he began to charge his arm cannon. Her raspy desperate gasps causing her to weaken. Giving up her struggle as the tight grip on her already overly sensitive throat began to make her lose consciousness from lack of oxygen. While losing consciousness the Chozo spoke something incomprehensible to the half conscious teen.
Samus's fight to stay conscious was lost as her eyes shut involuntarily. Before seconds later shooting open widely, as an unknown energy reawakened her body, before she completely lost consciousness.
Samus woke up numb, likely an hour after her battle. She awoke to a soft beeping in her helmet, alerting her to a transmission. Weakly pushing herself upright she struggled to sit up. Samus sat up trying to recollect her thoughts. "What happened?" she gazed over at the elevator door she had arrived through. It was destroyed with no possible way of escape. A painful flash of memories flashed through her mind, reminding her of the horrible battle she had lost. Getting to her feet Samus looked over her now blue and white basic power suit. "Shit..." she was now very incredibly vulnerable to the elements and enemies.
Not letting her fear of being vulnerable take over her, Samus pressed on as the quiet beeping in her helmet reminded her to go link up with the facility's network systems. Going past many of the hostile creatures in the area it didn't take long for her to find a network computer system. Plugging her cannon into the computer uploading the data recorded to her AI.
"So you accessed a network station, well done Samus. I have reviewed your vital signs and video log from the data you uploaded." Adam spoke to the teen. "I ran a full analysis. But I cannot account for why you lost consciousness. My readings indicate dramatic physical change in you. Whatever caused these changes seems to have stripped you of most of your abilities you might call it physical amnesia."
Samus nodded in acknowledgement. "Y...yeah..." the teen spoke through her agitated vocal cords. Clearing her throat she voiced her understanding. "I gathered as m...mu...much since I lost most, if not all my a..ab...abilities."
"Further analysis would indicate irritation within your old injury due to the attack. You may stutter for a while, you will recover from the flare up." The AI noted the teen's stuttering.
"I wo...won't be talking to anyone really. Depending on how far the network st...sta...stations... are. And I sure as hell won't be ch..chatting... with that scary guy." The blue and white armoured teen replied.
"That bring me to your assailant. I have been searching the Federation database against your video log. It appears to have been a Chozo..."
"I gathered that mu...much..." Samus scoffed rolling her eyes.
"The attackers identity is not yet clear." Adam continued, ignoring the girl's sarcasm. "I have determined that you are somewhere in the depths of ZDR. Your top priority should be to return to your ship on the surface. This situation is... precarious."
Samus could hear the nervous edge in the AI's tone. He was generally concerned for her safety, and obviously knew she would not just simply leave the planet. "Top p...pri...priority should be finding the X and ex...exterminating it, you know that Adam. Something is ha...happening on this planet, I cannot let the X infest it and fi...find a way off world."
"Trust your instincts Samus, as you navigate upwards." Chief's voice came through the computer.
"Chief?" Samus called confused as to how Chief was hearing her.
"I linked the Spartan's incoming call through the network when you uploaded my data." Adam answered Samus's confusion.
"I will Chief, it'll b...be... a while though." The teen replied honestly.
"The planet is made up of numerous environments. You may encounter low temperature pockets in your exploration. The Metroid DNA within you makes you vulnerable to the cold. I would avoid staying in them for long periods of time. While you're in your weakened state, the cold will harm you." Adam continued briefing.
"I know, sss...same as the last mi...mission..." Samus groaned, referring to her last deadly mission that gave her the fusion suit.
"One finale thing." Adam said capturing Samus's attention. "Underground interference is preventing radio transmissions. Check in with me at any network stations you find."
"Please don't forget to do so Samus." John's voice added.
"I know I kn...know..." the teen sighed at Chief's nagging like an annoying parent.
"I wish I was there to assist you but I can't..." John said uneasy after hearing the concerned edge in his daughter's AI.
"I...it's okay Chief. I will have Adam update you when I reach the next network st..sta...station, I've gotta go now." Samus replied, quickly exiting the room before the Spartan could question her further.
"Samus?" John called getting no reply.
"She has proceeded onto the next room." Adam replied to the calling Spartan.
"Adam, are you able to send me Samus's video logs so I can know how her actual progress is going?" The Spartan leader requested the AI's assistance. They were now on a ship searching for Infinity, or a UNSC base. They had time to watch the teen's progress.
"Certainly."
Samus jumped, running nimbly through the ancient facility. Theories of what was going on in this planet were beginning to cloud her thoughts. She dropped into an eerie area filled with steam. Scanning the area silently with her eyes before a metallic footfall caught her attention. Quickly pivoting with her cannon aimed in the direction of the noise maker. A creepy badly damaged E.M.M.I. halted momentarily in front of her.
Samus watched as the bot stood up straight, it must've been over twelve feet tall. Suddenly it grabbed Samus pinning the young hunter to ground where she struggled. Twisting quickly as the robot had only one servo, freeing herself as it attempted to stab her with a massive needle. Kicking the E.M.M.I. in the neck paralyzing it just long enough to slide in between it's legs. The teen ran to the next room and jumped to the next platform where she checked to see if the E.M.M.I followed. It had, but due to its damage it couldn't catch her.
"That's right you creepy fuck..." Samus thought to herself as she continued forward into a room with a downed central unit. Seeing it glowing she didn't know what possessed her to touch it. Placing her hand on the unit she absorbed it's power, gaining access to the omega beam.
Sure enough she took this new weapon as an invitation to put that damaged E.M.M.I. out of its misery. Dropping down from the upper platform she charged the cannon as the E.M.M.I. approached getting taller with each approaching stride. Lined up on the singular optic of the machine Samus released the charge taking the E.M.M.I. offline.
Watching as the destroyed robot disintegrated her new weapon perishing as well. Not thinking too much of it, the teen continued on. Thankful for the knowledge that there was a weapon strong enough to stop the mad robots.
"Those can't be Federation sample robots..." she thought, wondering why it was so hostile. Remembering this was part of the reason she was here on a bounty. "Maybe they're corrupted by some sort of virus?"
Fighting her way past other creatures the young teen finally came across a very odd entrance way made up of floating cube particles. "The fuck is this?" She hesitated, examining the entrance with her eyes before entering into another eerie area. Scanning the area with her eyes the girl located a magnetic strip on the wall ahead. "I will have to get my spider magnet before that becomes of use..." she noted leaping down. Opening the next door with her cannon, she walked on with a purpose, cannon at the ready if needed. Completely unaware of the robotic creature resting on the ceiling above. It slowly transformed beeping softly, alerting the armoured teen.
Samus spun around aiming her cannon up at the robot. As soon as it gazed at her she opened fire with her power beam doing nothing but irritating the bot. It carefully stepped off the ceiling standing tall as Samus switched her cannon ammunition to a missile which did absolutely nothing to put a dent on the unmoving machine.
"Shit!" The unharmed robot made Samus panic knowing her weapons were not currently able to damage the bot. She quickly gazed over her shoulder for an escape route locating a small opening she could slide through. The girl wasted no more time sprinting towards the opening the E.M.M.I. gave chase. Sliding into the opening Samus rolled onto her knee to make sure the robot wasn't still in pursuit. Taking a deep breath watching as the E.M.M.I. bashed itself into the narrow opening it could not get through. Samus hastily continued on finding the next network station with ease.
"Samus your voice should be ready for use now." Adam greeted the teen after she uploaded data.
"Oh good, I can curse at those freaking scaretrons personally. What the hell is with those things, I thought they were Galactic Federation property?" Samus replied with a question.
"Both E.M.M.I. you encountered were clearly trying to capture you. They may have been hacked. If so, it's reasonable to assume all E.M.M.I. will be hostile." Adam said to the confused teen. "E.M.M.I. send out a pulse to detect vibrations in the air within a certain radius. Essentially, they can hear you. Upon detecting vibrations, an E.M.M.I. enters surveillance mode to track their source. Stay out of it's line of sight when this happens. Other wise the danger to you will dramatically increase, if spotted they will seal all the E.M.M.I. exits and you will be trapped."
"I'm already feeling the danger at a maximum, since I am just basically back in the fusion suit with nothing but the bear minimum weapons." Samus groaned in annoyance. "What is this, the hunter becomes the hunted?"
"The E.M.M.I. will only stay in it's assigned zone. If you lose it in a pursuit it will disengage. I estimate a 99% probability of death if an E.M.M.I. captures you. There may be a very small opportunity to escape. But exploiting this window will be virtually impossible." Adam informed the already terrified teen. "The E.M.M.I. are immune to your current weapons. You lack the unique energy used to defeat the first E.M.M.I. Your only option now is to run, and avoid capture. Your highest priority in an E.M.M.I. zone should be simply to survive."
"Can't you ever give me something other than grim details?" Samus complained, she was joking of course, she completely understood the dire circumstances. "I will continue on from here. Is there any information on that Chozo?"
"Negative, I am still scanning the records of the Federation for an answer. Continue on Lady, and I will have answer by the time you find the next network station." The AI replied while transferring this conversation to the Spartan that requested such information.
Samus nodded before taking off. Not long after her conversation with her AI did she find another E.M.M.I. zone. She stayed out of sight for the most part, but her impatience and fear made her sprint through the zone after hearing the haunting beeping coming from a small distance. Once out of the zone the armoured teen continued through a few more corridors encountering small enemies that were more of a nuisance than a threat. All the while she activated a few control panels activating some sort of magma flow. Before entering yet another network station.
"There was no record of your assailant in the Federation database. However, there are records of a Chozo Warrior tribe. There is a strong possibility the two are connected." The AI greeted the waiting teen.
"Okay, that makes sense since all that I've seen on this planet is their tribe's architecture and artifacts. This must of been one of their settlements." Samus thought aloud.
"But why would someone lead you here, and send the E.M.M.I. after you?" Chief's voice questioned.
"Chief, are you getting Adam to update you while I run along on this mission?" The teen scoffed folding her arms.
"Yes, I am concerned for your safety. We all are. This situation doesn't seem normal." The Spartan leader replied.
"The footage of the X Parasite must've been staged to lure you in..." Linda's voice came through the speakers.
"Is the whole team monitoring my mission?" Samus questioned after hearing one of the female Spartans.
"We're on a ship, searching for a UNSC outpost. But we're hoping to find the Infinity first. It is Just Linda and I monitoring you. Kelly, and Fred, would be a bit overdramatic to your current situation." Chief explained to which Samus understood.
"This situation remains unclear. But your priority hasn't changed. You must return to your ship." Adam reminded the teen of the most important priority. "You have activated the magma supply system. That has restored power to the closed thermal doors. Seek them out to proceed. You also have six remaining E.M.M.I. hunting you. You have no means of confronting them. Remember that."
Samus nodded in acknowledgement looking to the left to see the next door she had to go through. "understood."
"Samus. I cannot stress being careful, enough to you." Chief said as Samus went to leave.
Halting in front of the door Samus sighed. "I'm incredibly vulnerable to almost everything on this planet. I will continue on cautiously." She said as she left through the door. "I only engage the E.M.M.I. if I'm equipped with the proper weapons." Samus reminded herself as the door closed behind her.
Continuing through the facility she did just that eventually taking out a central unit and gaining access to the omega beam again, she immediately put down the E.M.M.I. that had chased her earlier.
Crouching next to the disintegrating bot, Samus began to absorb a power from it, regaining her spider magnet.
"Good, now I can move on further through this area." Samus thought aloud as she continued to the next area.
The teen ran into a very wide open room filled with red sands, with a singular statue of a cloaked Chozo warrior. Samus gazed up at the beautiful statue momentarily before turning her gaze forward. Hearing a grumbling roar come from behind, Samus spun getting face to face with a blue scorpion like creature. She immediately fired a missile at it's face making it angry. "Missiles work on you, that's great!" Samus taunted sliding under the alien scorpion as the creature attempted to bite her. She battled the aggressive creature that suddenly cloaked itself after taking too much damage from her fierce attacks. It did not take long for her to get the better of it even when cloaked she hit the scorpion right on target.
Corpious whined through a growl suffering from too much damage.
Samus stood behind watching the whimpering creature while charging her cannon, regaining it's attention.
Barely able to keep his head up Corpious slunk his neck with a growl following Samus's movements as she casually walked in front of the massive statue.
"Come meet your end..." Samus calmly lifted her cannon aiming it at the roaring scorpion creature.
Corpious charged the girl who released the charge onto his face, Samus leapt into the air narrowly missing the deadly tail as Corpious collided into the statue so hard it collapsed on top of him.
Hearing the disgusting but satisfying squish and crunch of the statue crushing Corpious, Samus turned her helm to the tail laying next to her. "Hmm, I wonder if I could equip that thing's cloaking to my suit?" The teen wondered picking up the tail that disintegrated as soon as she did, revealing an alien ability cube. As soon as the cube rested just above the girl's hand it transformed absorbed by the power suit, answering Samus's question. "This will be a better way to evade those E.M.M.I. monsters." Samus thought, before pressing on further into the alien area.
As Samus continued on hours passed by. Running through the various rooms that were beginning to feel like a maze, activating more magma flows. A thought crossed her young mind.
The first E.M.M.I. she encountered was half dead. "From what?" Samus narrowed her eyes as she fought small pesky creatures. And the central unit she had encountered moments after that was freshly killed, again... "From what, why was it killed?" Was it just so she understood that the E.M.M.I.'s could be destroyed with the omega beam? The scorpion like creature she had fought had an ability hidden inside it. That was nothing new to her as that was how she obtained many of her suits special features. Though the ability was in a kinetic box made from Chozo technology...
Her wondering thoughts began to make her feel as if she was on somebody's agenda, completing certain tasks right on schedule. "Stop it... you're overthinking things Samus, you just carry on." She told herself as she entered another network station.
"ZDR appears to be powered by thermal energy. Magma is pumped from the planet's interior and routed from there." Adam said to the half listening teen. "I have located the central system for the magma. It is located here in Cartaris."
"Okay..." Samus replied beginning to make her way to the exit.
"Samus." Adam called making the girl turn around. "Your current suit cannot protect you as you explore Cataris. The extreme heat of the lava is too much for it. Under no circumstances should you enter high temperature areas."
"Well how the hell am I supposed get everything flowing, if I can't go in those areas?" The teen complained approaching the computer.
"I located a shuttle somewhere above here. Use it to continue forward." Adam answered not giving into the teen's annoyance.
"Fine, I'll go there." Samus sighed.
"There is one more thing to discuss. It is your new Phantom Cloak ability." The AI stopped the girl again.
"Is that what we're calling it now?" Samus sarcastically remarked even though she liked the name. The teen was trying to be lighthearted in the dire situation, it made her feel a bit more human in the tense atmosphere.
"The Phantom Cloak prevents the E.M.M.I. from detecting you..."
"Yeah, I know Adam, you don't need to explain it. I will use it wisely and stay vigilant." Samus brushed off the AI's explanation of her new ability.
"Knock off the attitude Samus. Listen to Adam." Chief sternly told his impatient teen.
"Do you get automatically connected when I connect with Adam or something?" Samus continued her sarcasm only irritating Chief further.
"Samus, you need to take this seriously..."
"Chief, stop worrying about me. I am taking this very seriously, I understand everything being said to me. This isn't a joke situation. It's tense, deadly, and frightening." Samus admitted she was dreading her continuation of this mission.
"Just stay on target, and keep making your way to your ship Samus. It will be over sooner than later if you continue to cooperate safely." Linda told the young hunter.
Samus took that note and left the station, taking the shuttle Adam spoke of. The teen pressed on finding yet another E.M.M.I. location, cautiously walking a bright green E.M.M.I. dropped directly in front of her facing the opposite direction. Quickly activating her cloak just in time as the bot turned to scan Samus's now invisible body.
Her heart pounded in terror as the E.M.M.I. unknowingly scanned her for about 15 seconds too long in her opinion. Before it turned around contorting itself into a compact form as it continued on through a small gap. "Fuck..." Samus thought watching the robot leave, the chances of her escaping the deadly robots in a pursuit were beginning to decline rapidly with each new encounter.
Carefully following the E.M.M.I.'s pathway after disengaging her cloaking, she quickly made her way to the other end of the E.M.M.I. zone. Unfortunately for her the robot had detected her footsteps as she closed in on the exit.
Hearing the soft chirping coming up fast behind her Samus made a run for the exit leaping through the door just in time. Her heart raced as she glared at the door she escaped through. A sigh of relief was heard when she realized she was out of the robot's jurisdiction.
Finding the next network station she was finally able to relax her tense body. Uploading the data to the computer network.
"E.M.M.I. stands for Extraplanetary Multiform Mobile Identifier. It can procedurally modify and enhance its own capabilities. It's ability to configure into narrow spaces is a standard feature. Any E.M.M.I. you encounter will likely do so as it pursues you. You are not capable of destroying their armoured plating, this is true even for you at your full capabilities." Adam's straight to the point greetings were continuously filling Samus's heart with dread. "You are faced with an overwhelming power. Accept your helplessness. Study each E.M.M.I. carefully, and use the Phantom Cloak to advance. There are risks even here. Do not hesitate to destroy an E.M.M.I. whenever you discover more unique energy. This was not one of your original priorities. However, I see no other way to accomplish your goal. These existential threats cannot be sanctioned."
Samus was well aware that she was helpless. She didn't stick around the network station to hear the other opinions she just left. The teen wanted out of this place, and the sooner she explored the other regions the faster she'd find her ship. But she knew deep down that abandoning the planet without locating the X Parasite and destroying it, would doom the galaxies.
She could not escape.
Entering the next E.M.M.I. area turned into a mistake as a speedy E.M.M.I. quickly detected her and gave immediate chase. Samus ran for her life sprinting over a sensor activated door that shut the E.M.M.I. out. Samus was not free yet as she knew the door was not a block to the entire room. With haste she ran to the exit narrowly escaping detection. A quick scan of the new room that locked upon entry. Her eyes locking onto the central unit's AI, confirmed she was at the central network for this area. She quickly destroyed the organic looking AI that seemed to resemble mother brain. "This is a Chozo planet for sure..." she thought, giving the computer one last devastating blast.
"Alright you creepy, electronic, malfunction, time for your end." Samus absorbed the omega beam once more, exiting the room to find the E.M.M.I. already on its way to kill her. Blasting the robots protective plating off Samus charged her cannon waiting for the right moment.
The green robot collapsed in a heap, sparking and sizzling as Samus siphoned its ability power up before it disintegrated. Regaining her morph ball function.
Traveling through the maze like area, fighting creatures of all sorts. "It's been hours since my arrival. I feel like I'm getting no where..." the young teen spoke to herself as she usually did on her bounty missions. The teen eventually came upon another Chozo statue, but one she was more accustomed to. Bearing a gift in its large hands. Samus gave a small blast at the gift cracking the protective shell, the power up orb absorbed into the teen's armour. Samus felt her muscles tighten, a tingling sensation surging through her body as her suit upgraded.
Examining her now upgraded suit it took seconds for her to realize she had obtained the Varia suit. Taking advantage of the armour she immediately plunged into the extreme high temperature areas Adam warned her against exploring. In morph ball she rolled all the way down into the depths of a lava filled room, filled with thick smog, and steam. She transformed landing on a small platform. Samus could hear loud clanging of some sort, figuring it was a generator of some sort. Taking only a few steps forward the teen quickly realized she was greatly mistaken.
The monstrous chained creature slowly emerged from the thick smoke, making Samus look like a tiny ant. The creature revealed himself to be no other than one Samus's old foes, and Ridley's most trusted friend.
Kraid.
Samus dropped her shoulders and cannon in shock at first. "So this is where you've been. I was wondering when Ridley would stop rising from the dead, and your face would appear..." Samus stood unwaveringly as Kraid lunged viciously at her. Samus charged her canon still standing strong in front of the snarling teeth inches from her visor. Her reaction to the dragon's screaming in her face was not the response Kraid was looking for.
Kraid yelped throwing his head back in pain after Samus shot him in his mouth. The green dragon again tried to swipe his claw at the teen to get his revenge, but the restraints wouldn't give. So instead he did one last finale roar of hatred before beginning his assault on the Chozo warrior teen.
"Let's end this." Samus immediately retaliated against the multiple attacks Kraid threw at her. Doing her many acrobatic moves to avoid the fireballs, and disgusting flying nails. All while landing devastating shots on the dragon.
One of Samus's charged shots sent the dragon over the edge, he roared ferociously continuously reaching for the teen with his left claw he eventually began to bend the cuff and Samus realized that.
Samus prepared herself for the massive claw that broke out of the cuff. Leaping backwards she flipped through the air descending onto a lower platform putting her dangerously close to the lava. Which she was already having anxiety being around due to being maimed by Sylux. But she couldn't waver on that now as the monstrous dragon stepped towards her before snagging on the end of his chain. As Kraid screamed in frustration Samus took a look at what was in front of her. The disgusting purple belly button on the dragon would be an easy entrance to seriously do some damage she thought upon locking her eyes on it.
Turning around shooting the bottom of the wall behind her Samus took note of a morph ball launcher. Quickly contorting into her morph ball she entered it, immediately being launched directly into the dragons belly button where she released numerous bombs inside of him before shooting back out. Transforming Samus began to run up dragon's abdomen, agonizing screams erupting from Kraid.
Kraid desperately tried to hit her off of him like an insect, but to no avail. When Samus reached his head he tried to bite, again to no avail. Samus dodged everything, leaping onto the collar restraint, before jumping onto the unoccupied hanging cuff. Wrapping around the chains with her gun charged facing the ferocious beast Samus fired just before Kraid struck the cuff. Samus leapt off narrowly avoiding the clawed hand. Landing on the lower platform Samus watched as Kraid desperately clung to anything in his reach while he slowly submerged into the boiling lava below. In desperation he shot a nail out of his abdomen at Samus who easily dodged the pathetic attack. Kraid screamed splashing around in the lava causing Samus to take a step back in fear of the molten liquid hitting her. She did not move as the dragon tried to claw his way out next to her. Once completely submerged Samus waited a moment before carrying on, she had had past enemies emerge from lava after their defeat, she did not want to be maimed a second time.
Arriving at the next network station Samus was immediately scolded by Chief for risking herself in that fight with Kraid.
"Chief what the hell was I supposed to do, I was trapped? That fucker was in my way." Samus replied annoyed.
"Watch it Samus." Chief warned the feisty girl.
Poor Adam had already explained the geographic information about trying to restart all generators. But could not explain further due to the argument between the teen and Spartan leader.
"Samus, I don't think we need to remind you that you are still recovering from that initial attack from your arrival." John hissed through the speakers.
"Do we have anymore information on what the hell that robot was?" Linda questioned, giving Adam an opportunity to speak.
"It wasn't a robot... it was an armoured Chozo warrior." Samus grumbled while Adam answered Linda's query.
"Negative. Samus you have been slowly recovering your abilities. I have still not established what happened to you physically. Don't let your guard down. Your primary objective is to survive. Proceed with utmost care." Adam told the girl, giving her a good exit.
The teen didn't understand why Adam kept repeating that something was physically off about her. Besides losing most of her suits abilities she felt fine. "I will hear from you all at the next checkpoint." Samus quickly escaped the pressing conversation by leaving to further explore other regions of the facility.
"That damn girl is going to get herself killed, she's not being careful enough." John thought aloud to which Linda shook her head at him.
"John, Samus is doing all that she can, considering her current situation. I can't imagine how terrified she must feel. Samus is being very cautious. You're being overprotective because you have no ability to rescue her if she needs it. Samus will survive this, she's a fighter." Linda tried to comfort but also make her leader understand Samus's horrifying situation.
Taking a few different shuttles to new areas, Samus found that the more area's she discovered, the deadlier they got. Exploring through Burenia aggravated Samus, she had a large hatred for areas she had to work in completely submerged in water, without her gravity suit. She had obtained another suspiciously placed gift called the flash shift. "It's not suspicious... you find Chozo power ups all the time..." Samus kept telling herself, though in the back of her mind she believed that these cubed power ups were being placed. She was enamoured with the flash shift ability, putting it to good use, though it was of no use to her underwater currently.
After a brutal hour of exploring through the water Samus gladly took different transports to new and old areas of exploration. In that time she managed to collect her speed booster from another E.M.M.I. she murdered. Exploring through a forested area Samus dropped down into a room where another statue was holding a Chozo gift. Walking up to the statue with a purpose Samus hesitated to take the cube as if the statue was going to move it away from her. Collecting it was necessary though as it was the pulse scanner, that would reveal hidden passageways to her.
It had been quite a few hours since Samus had checked in with Adam and Chief. She had taken a new transportation shuttle to Ferinia. It was almost palace like, with various Chozo warrior architecture.
Samus entered an E.M.M.I. zone, sliding down into a small room below. The teen gazed up curiously, rushing over to a wall painted with Chozo hieroglyphics. The picture depicting a horrible battle between two Chozo tribes. "Thoha..." The teen read the Chozo language with ease. "Mawkin?" Samus narrowed her vision on the Chozo seemingly orchestrating the massacre, it was the Chozo warrior that had attacked her upon her arrival on the planet.
Suddenly an uncontrollable energy took over the teen's hand, glowing magenta, her muscles spasming uncontrollably. All Samus could hear was her heart beat as an uncontrollable urge to attack took over her mind and body momentarily.
A sonic ring rung through the air as a pulse of electricity flew through the wall, bringing Samus out of her trance, an electrical pulse wave hit the teen, throwing Samus back away from the wall.
Landing on her hands and knees, convulsing involuntarily, Samus struggled to gain control after being stunned by the electrical shot. All she could do was weakly lift her head as she watched an E.M.M.I. break through the painted wall. She had completely forgotten she was in an E.M.M.I. zone. Samus barely had time to stand as the robot captured her, clutching the helpless teen tightly in its servos.
"No no no!" Samus could do nothing, she couldn't even squirm or struggle, as her body was recovering from being stunned by the electrical shock. She couldn't see much through a black haze the stun caused in her vision but she could make out the E.M.M.I. readying itself for the final blow.
Suddenly the E.M.M.I. deactivated, unexpectedly dropping the teen to the floor.
Samus fell in a heap, all she had the strength to do was sit up and aim her cannon directly at the frozen E.M.M.I. standing over her. Hearing large footfalls approaching her from behind, the girl swung her cannon around, her vision clearing the black haze as she aimed at what she assumed was another Chozo, whom stood quietly staring. Samus's vision returned completely, pivoting on her butt she turned her full attention onto the Chozo. Keeping her cannon locked on the very tall bird.
Placing a hand over it's chest the Chozo bowed it's head respectfully at Samus.
Samus took a second to drop her aim relaxing her upper body. She sat, staring up at the Chozo like child looking up at a grown up waiting for their lesson.
The Chozo calmly put their hands together while he waited for Samus to show him some further trust.
Samus blinked behind her visor, slowly getting to her feet she stood tall but not as tall as the Chozo in front of her. "Hello..." she greeted the being shyly.
"Greetings, Samus Aran." The alien bird replied in the native language of the Chozo. "Please come, this one will not harm you anymore." The tall bird turned walking back the way he came from.
Samus warily looked back at the deactivated E.M.M.I. before cautiously following the stranger. The young warrior still clutched her cannon as they strode through the fallen palace. She continued to carefully examine the Chozo in front of her. He seemed to have a much softer aura than the first encountered Chozo warrior.
"Who are you?" The teen asked in the language of the Chozo, a language she was very fluent in. It made her smile behind her visor as it reminded her that just before she left the Spartans, Kelly questioned her knowledge on the language.
The Chozo didn't reply right away as he brought her into a very brightly lit room. He halted in front of what seemed to be a magnificent computer system. "I am Quiet Robe, a scientist from the Thoha tribe."
"Thoha tribe, I saw that name in that painting." Samus thought aloud.
"Yes, that picture depicted a story that I shall explain to you." Quiet Robe replied to Samus's aloud thinking.
The teen tilted her helmet she must've still been speaking Chozo it was something that would've come naturally to her. "Quiet Robe, who was the warrior that attacked me?"
"The Chozo who attacked you is called Raven Beak. He possesses physical prowess and intelligence, and is the leader of a Chozo warrior tribe called the Mawkin."
Samus nodded in acknowledgement, hearing the tribe name Mawkin brought an odd energy surging through her. Mawkin was also one of the names she had read on the painted wall.
"Aided by the Mawkin, a fellow tribe of the Chozo, we managed to contain the Metroids that were running rampant on SR388. Our intention was to eradicate these Metroids, which had become more dangerous than ever before, by destroying the planet..."
"I think I solved that issue for you..." Samus informally joked, interrupting Quiet Robe, who seemed amused by her youthful immaturity. Rather than annoyed like everyone else usually was when she nervously joked around in a serious moment.
Quiet robe smiled it was refreshing to have young blood bring a youthful energy. But he had to continue to inform the teen with his important information. "However. Raven Beak... took extreme measures to prevent that."
"What, why?" Samus asked curiously. "That's an insane choice."
"He worships at the alter of power. In his eyes, the Metroids were... symbolic of a power great enough to rule the galaxy. Raven Beak plotted to bring the Metroids to ZDR and use them as a bioweapon. To accomplish this, he needed the Thoha tribe, as we possess the ability to control the Metroids. For that purpose, I alone was spared." Quiet Robe explained the sadness and corruption behind the painting. "Raven Beak and the Mawkin tribe took me back to their homeworld, ZDR, in order to continue their preparations for gathering the Metroids."
"SR388 must've been the Thoha's settlement world." Samus listened intently but had questions. "Why aren't there any Metroids here if that was the case?"
"However, they ran into unforeseen difficulties and were forced to put their plan on hold. One of the soldiers who returned from SR388 was actually an X in disguise."
"Oh..." The teen turned her head away.
Quiet Robe turned walking towards the beautiful scenery. "ZDR descended into chaos. All of their soldiers were infected by the X. Yet somehow, Raven Beak narrowly managed to contain them. He then turned his thoughts to resuming his plan... But the Metroids on SR388 had already been eradicated by your hand."
Samus stood silently listening as the topic had moved onto her most recent accomplishments.
Quiet Robe finally turned to look back at the young armour. "With the Metroids now extinct... Raven Beak's plans should have lain in ruin."
"Lain in ruin?" Samus repeated.
"Yes, lain in ruin... if not for you." Quiet Robe replied.
"What did I do, I rid of what Raven Beak desired. I accomplished the Thoha's goals?" The teen asked now very confused.
Quiet Robe turned his head, giving a heavy sigh before explaining to the bounty hunter. "The E.M.M.I. are being used by Raven Beak. Samus Aran...listen well."
Samus stood still giving Quiet Robe her full undivided attention.
"He has commanded them to extract the Metroid DNA from within your body."
The news hit Samus hard, the Spartan's were right her unique DNA was now causing issues, some of those issues she had yet to learn of. Samus now knew her true mission for being here. It was to put an end to the maddening threat that was Raven Beak. And eradicate his contained X Parasites. She cared little about the fact that her life was in immense danger, the safety of others came before her own.
"Don't worry. I'll end this. Once and for all." Samus replied firmly to the concerned Chozo.
Quiet Robe nodded in acknowledgement with a grateful smile, turning to his computer console. "You must proceed through here. I just unlocked the gate."
The teen watched the screen taking note that the gate was in Burenia. She had passed by it many times.
Quiet Robe turned his full attention back to the young Chozo warrior in front of him. "I am counting on you, Samus..." were the last words Quiet Robe said as he was suddenly shot and killed from behind by a robot Chozo soldier.
"Quite Robe!" Samus cried glaring at the soldier with nothing but fury burning in her eyes.
With all her anger Samus made quick work of the brutal soldier, though it had landed a few good blows to her. The teen stared mournfully at the now deceased Chozo, crouching next to the body she checked for any signs of life. There was none.
"Thank you for saving my life Quiet Robe. I will accomplish my mission, in your honour." Samus quietly thanked the lifeless Chozo as a tear rolled down her cheek. She took a moment to continue on, leaving the body behind. If others were there to witness her shed tears of sorrow and pain for the deceased Chozo. It probably would have come across as an overly emotional reaction in their eyes. Especially since she had just met him. But to the teen, Quiet Robe was not just a stranger she had just met. To her Quiet Robe was possibly the last Chozo she would ever communicate with. Though she knew Raven Beak was very much alive, and a Chozo warrior. His words, and coming death, would not give her the impact as the gentle soul that Quiet Robe was.
Samus passed the deactivated E.M.M.I. even when deactivated the robotic creature still sent shivers down her spine. Barely paying attention to where she was going, heartbroken by the sudden death of a live Chozo. It had been years since she had seen, let alone communicated with, a live Chozo. Especially one like Quiet Robe, who represented the true peaceful mannerisms of the Chozo race.
"Oof..." Samus shook out of her thoughts after running into a locked door. Scanning the area she realized it was a network station. She groaned plugging her cannon into the computer.
"Our Thoha friend has explained much. We now know why the E.M.M.I. are pursuing you." Adam said as Samus returned her focus to the computer. "Samus, Raven Beak lured you here, he wants the Metroid DNA that only exist in your body."
"I know... Quiet Robe told me..." Samus replied she knew being here was suspicious, she now understood why.
"What was that Samus?" The Spartans questioned, unable to understand the strange language the girl was speaking.
"I said Quiet Robe informed me about Raven Beak's plans." Samus replied still speaking Chozo.
"You are speaking Chozo, Samus." Adam reminded the confused teen.
The teen blinked, feeling foolish for not realizing that. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize..." Samus apologized. "I am aware of Raven Beak's intentions."
"Quiet Robe has seemed to have deactivate all remaining E.M.M.I. You should now be able to reach the surface unthreatened." Adam continued.
"You should evacuate immediately Samus." Chief told his teen who practically laughed at that suggestion.
"No, I can't. My job here isn't done yet. You wouldn't leave Cortana to rule the universe, while you alone, escaped her wrath. You're going to put an end to her madness. I'm going to do the same with Raven Beak." The young teen expressed her duties to her father figure. "Adam?"
"The gate Quiet Robe opened is in Burenia, go there immediately." The AI responded knowing Samus would continue no matter how hard Chief argued.
"I will talk to you guys soon." Samus ran out the station continuing back to the watery hell.
"John, remember don't argue with her, this is her life. We can't run it. What she's doing is critical for all of us. We wouldn't be able to help her even if we wanted to. All the shit she's going through to eradicate a deadly threat to the universe. We would've been dead along time ago. Our suits aren't built for that kind of adventuring." Linda reminded her leader that Samus had to complete this mission on her own.
John nodded in acknowledgement, but he hated the idea of his little girl going against a powerful force that she had little chance of surviving. Even at her full power, according to Adam. His wish was for her to prevail and live to talk about it.
Going through the gate it didn't take long for Samus to encounter a massive underwater creature. With a large effort she was able to defeat the mutant water plant and move on. Finding transportation the teen entered a forested area. Not too far into the area the teen came face to face with another Chozo soldier. The area she fought it in was incredibly awkward making it difficult to dodge it's attacks. But after taking on a bit of damage Samus continued on.
The teens body was sore and exhausted but she pressed on. "It must've been the next day by now" she thought to herself upon enter another network station.
"Samus, you are beginning to reach the surface. This area Ghavoran, seems to be an underground forest." Adam greeted the teen after she interfaced with the network station. "Raven Beak still desires the Metroid DNA within you. I have reviewed the video footage of when you first encountered him."
"Okay, what... your analysis?" Samus questioned.
John could hear the exhaustion in his daughter's incorrect grammar. She needed to rest.
"You were no match for him then. You are no match for him now. You have regained most of your combat abilities. However. My analysis suggests you are not a worthy adversary for him. Not even at full power." Adam warned the girl, but she already knew that.
Terror struck Chief's heart after hearing the AI reconfirm the analysis of Samus being incapable of defeating her attacker.
"One thing still eludes me." Adam returned the attention to him. "Why did Raven Beak spare you during that encounter? Something must've motivated him."
Samus continued on through many small battles with the wildlife. Eventually finding yet another new transportation system. The latest analysis from her AI running through her head. "Why did Raven Beak spare me?" Samus thought aloud. The Chozo warrior could've easily siphoned her DNA right then and there. But he left without the sample he so desperately desired. "Why..."
The girl had no time to dwell on that thought as she approached a massive door that lit up upon her approach, opening the massive doorway, Samus entered the dark area as the door closed behind her. Immediately being surrounded by robotic scanners of some sort, she aimed her cannon at them, waiting for the robots to fire at her.
"Scan complete." A robotic voice spoke Chozo.
Samus eased her aim returning her focus on the path ahead. Walking through the door she encountered a black gooey demonic looking creature the floor covered in the gooey mess. She easily destroyed the creature revealing that it was an X Parasite, it absorbed back into the goo. Creating the same creature behind the teen. Samus used her flash shift to narrowly escape the attacker, once again putting it out of its misery but this time she absorbed the X.
Entering an area that may have previously been a throne room before destruction broke it down Samus spotted a Chozo warrior hidden in the rubble. Taking a few more steps the robotic figure awakened, spear in hand, it stepped out in front of Samus, ready for combat.
Samus used her new plasma beam she obtained earlier to pierce through the robotic plating, while doing that she had to do many flips and rolls just to evade the warrior's equally acrobatic moves.
The warrior screamed a horrible screech at Samus, revealing its true form to be an X.
"Should've know..." the teen thought as the creature went to stab her with the spear.
Batting it out of the way Samus threw the warrior off balance. But not enough as it leapt in the air ready to stab again. Samus was quick though striking the spear right out of the creatures hand, infuriating it. The creature roared angrily at Samus, who in turn grabbed its demented beak.
She slammed its face into the ground, charging her cannon she raised its beak once more. "Be quiet..." The creature still screaming in protest as Samus stepped on the bottom half of the beak ending the noise with a charged plasma shot. She absorbed the X that was the creature, before continuing on through Elun. She knew she had to leave this area now.
Walking to the massive door that was closed when she had entered. It was now wide open with many X parasites floating, escaping their prison that was Elun. "Shit... not good."
Running on the bridge to the transport shuttle Samus only saw more X escaping their confinement. Once off the shuttle the teen found a network station as soon as possible.
"The X have been released from their confinement. They are scattered across the planet. This is no doubt the work of Raven Beak. His motives are still a mystery." Adam said to the listening teen.
"I am not certain what Raven Beak is trying to accomplish. I'm immune to the X." Samus thought aloud.
"Perhaps it was some kind of message?" Linda thought.
"Message?" Samus had been trying to figure out the message the Chozo warrior had been sending her since her arrival.
"Regardless, the X are there. They are probably overrunning the planet. I know you must destroy them. Hurry back to your ship, Samus." John told the girl, who nodded in agreement. "I trust you will make it there safely."
Samus was relieved to finally hear Chief's understanding tone. He no longer questioned her about how she was getting to her ship, and why she had to end Raven Beak.
Samus left the network hub exploring further she ran into a live E.M.M.I. "Fuck, dammit Adam, I thought you said they were all offline!" She panicked as the blue robot gave chase. She quickly evaded capture finding the central unit and destroying it for the omega beam. Moments later gladly destroying the demon robot. Absorbing the power up from its disappearing frame, she acquired her ice missiles.
After communicating with Adam once more, he alerted her to the fact that the E.M.M.I. had been reactivated. And to watch for the electrical shock that paralyzed her earlier when she met Quiet Robe. She was now tasked with hunting down major X threats. Through her travels the teen came across another Chozo statue bearing a gift. Eagerly taking the gift Samus happily acquired her Gravity Suit.
"Yes, no more bullshit through the water!" Samus cheered for herself. Her hatred of travelling through water quite apparent.
After this new upgrade Samus returned to an unfamiliar network station in the now frozen Artaria.
"The X have spread across the planet. You can assume all creatures are now X. You also must've noticed the temperature dropping on ZDR. I cannot say the X are to blame, but it needs to be corrected if you are to move forward. This place Artaria is at the very depths of the planet much of it's thermal energy comes from Cataris, I believe something may be forcefully blocking the thermal energy."
Samus sighed. "Alright, back to Cataris." The teen immediately found an elevator travelling to the now frozen Cataris. "What the hell... Adam wasn't kidding wow." She thought since the place was usually overheated. She exited the elevator, extremely thankful for her gravity suits protection from the harsh cold.
Samus eventually found a morph ball launcher. That sent her to the main magma flow generator. Transforming she felt the temperature rise as she was once again near lava flow.
"What the hell is all this crap..." Samus said scanning all the thick goop that was preventing the generator from functioning. "What caused this?"
At the top of the generator appeared her answer, a multi legged creature emerged its head seemingly resembling Corpiuos'.
"Ugh, there's no shortage of you ugly fuckers..." She aimed her cannon at the creature as it crawled out of the ceiling to be face to face with the hunter.
It screamed in outrage at her very presence and began its assault. Samus had a hell of a time dodging the deadly obstacle course the experiment creature threw at her. But she was able to send it running scared a few times, while she blasted away at its head. The experiment screamed in agony as it ran around the generator with Samus clinging to him firing super missiles continuously. Eventually he flung her off his head.
Samus landed on the platform as the creature weakly tried to cling to the platform as well. She charged her cannon firing her plasma beam continuously until the experiment began to slip off. Though the creature had one last move, using its clawed tentacle it grabbed the teen, pulling her off the edge with it.
"Fuck off, no no no!" Samus cursed firing charged blasts like crazy to get the creature to release her, eventually it lost grip releasing Samus just in time for her to grab the ledge, watching as the demented creature fell into the lava, burning the X Parasite that was possessing it.
Samus breathed heavily flipping back onto the solid platform. She gazed up at the generator. "Okay... so now I've got to shoot this crap off I guess..." she sighed just as the goop began to disintegrate. "Oh, maybe not." Satisfied with the now working generator Samus turned around blasting a wide beam activation panel halting the blowing fans that she came through.
Another few hours of gaining new power ups and other abilities, fighting off the X Parasites at almost every moment. Samus skipped a few network stations before linking up with one in a new area she discovered.
"Well done Samus, you stopped the planet from cooling. You were to report directly after that. You didn't." Adam both praised and scolded the teen.
"I know, but you were just going to say well done, and inform me that I am still not ready to fight Raven Beak." Samus replied with an eye roll. To which Adam kept silent for a moment proving the girl was correct.
"This area, Hanubia, is on the planet's surface. You've finally made it Samus." The AI changed the subject.
"Huh, that makes sense with all the stormy weather." Samus thought aloud, she was hiding her excitement from the news of her being so close to leaving.
"There is still a problem. Destroying the planet will eliminate the X parasites. but Raven Beak is unlikely to sit idly by while this happens. He will try to escape once he detects the danger. Raven Beak's search for Metroid DNA poses a threat to the galaxy. He will never give up." Adam informed the young Chozo warrior.
"It's time to stop him then." Samus said in reply.
"The odds are still not in your favour. But you must end things here." Adam agreed with the teen. "I am still searching for his location. Return to a station to enquire later."
"Samus I want you to be even more vigilant then before. Even if you're almost at full power. This Raven Beak seems to be throwing everything at you." Chief warned his young daughter.
"I will be careful Chief. I will talk to you all in a while." Samus exited the room. Finding the next central unit she destroyed the purple E.M.M.I. that nearly killed her hours ago. She acquired the wave beam from its lifeless husk before continuing on to find the last E.M.M.I.
Entering a small room full of experiments in holding tubes she cautiously strode by. Having had too many run ins with creatures that burst out of their casing. And this case was no different as an evolved Armadigger broke out behind her, charging at the armoured teen.
Samus spun around countering the charge by striking the creature back with her cannon. The sudden attack awakening the strange energy once again. Taking over her body, her muscles refusing to listen to her. Keeping her in place as she only wanted to reach for her cannon to end the recovering creature. She tried desperately to regain control of her seemingly possessed arm as the Armadigger fully recovered and was on the charge. Some how she managed to regain her body's control firing her cannon just in time to kill the creature.
Samus breathed heavily examining her hand that had almost caused her incredible harm once again. "What the hell is going on?" She questioned herself, every time that energy took over her she had the uncontrollable urge to attack, but not with her cannon. Looking down at her hand once more, it was as if her left hand preferred to do the attacking rather than her cannon arm. Shaking off her thoughts Samus continued through the door.
Unknowingly it was an E.M.M.I. door and there seemed to be absolutely no ways for escape as the door she came through now shut permanently. Panic set in as the teen could hear the E.M.M.I. fast approaching she ran to the other side of the room hoping to make a small break in the locked door. Anything to evade the deadly robot. But the odds were not in her favour. The E.M.M.I. released a power bomb draining Samus of all her energy tanks. Leaving her knocking on deaths door. Usually a power bomb would vaporize humans but Samus's armour was enough to protect her from one blast.
Samus fell to her knees as the E.M.M.I. charged her knocking her backwards. She was able to get to her feet in a desperate attempt to counter the attacking robot. She did just that stunning the red E.M.M.I. but once again at a cost. Her hand glowed magenta completely diverting the teen's attention as this time it did not convulse or freeze her muscles. She had control.
The E.M.M.I. recovered quickly, approaching the occupied teen.
Samus gasped remembering the death robot's presence. But she was too late it grabbed her by the waist, pinning her against the ground. She couldn't move in its grip as it charged the deadly DNA siphoning needle. Samus's glowing left arm grabbed the needle in a desperate attempt to prevent her death. Grabbing the needle caused a surge of energy to course between the teen and robot. Samus unknowingly was siphoning the life force out of the robot. Feeling the robot growing weaker as her energy tanks were being refilled, it was in that moment Samus realized what she was doing. Once the E.M.M.I. was completely depleted of energy Samus kicked its lifeless husk off of her.
Pushing herself off of the floor her hand still glowing with power Samus now understood the extent of this awakened power inside of her. Her body must've fully adapted to the unique Metroid DNA within her. She now possessed the powers of the Metroid.
The teen did not catch a break though as a Chozo Warrior robot emerged from depths of the room. Samus engaged the X parasite infested Chozo warrior, using her cannon for most of the battle as the warrior inflicted a small amount of damage to her depleting a couple energy tanks. She batted the spear out of the screaming parasite's hand, slamming its head into the floor she clutched it tightly, using her Metroid powers to drain the life force out of the parasite.
She stood proudly making a fist with her glowing hand replenishing all her missiles and energy tanks. Samus walked over the sparking E.M.M.I. rightfully absorbing the power bomb ability.
Moving forward Samus entered a network station. She plugged in her cannon secretly dreading what the others would think of her now with her new found power.
"Samus, you have manifested a new power. The speed with which you siphon energy is undoubtedly Metroid in nature. The Metroid DNA inside you must have fully awakened. No doubt as a result of the many battles you have fought on this mission. This tremendous power is the last thing you require to confront Raven Beak. I have detected a fortress in the sky high above Hanubia. He must be there. The time has come Samus, fulfil your destiny." Adam spoke to the teen without judgment.
"Wait, none of you are freaked out by my new powers?" Samus asked confused.
"We lost communication with the Spartans during your last E.M.M.I. encounter. They said they were to be travelling further into deep space, and wished you luck and victory in your final battle." The AI replied to the disappointed teen.
"Oh... I guess they're finally moving forward on their missions." She thought aloud. "I shall make my way to the sky then..." Samus hesitated to exit the station. "If you gain contact with Blue Team during my battle, tell them I will make my journey to assist them after I'm done here."
"And if you perish?" Adam asked, morbid, but he was being realistic.
"Tell them I love them, and I truly thank them for sacrificing their lives to raise me." Samus said while exiting the station.
Samus ran through Elun easily battling another Chozo X. She quickly gained access to an elevator that took her into the sky fortress. Once in the fortress the teen made her way through the eerily quiet temple, finding a small lift. "This is it..." she thought aloud. Sensing that this was the elevator that led to Raven Beak.
Reaching the top of the elevator threw confusion at her momentarily as the elevator led to a network station instead of Raven Beak. "Odd..." she plugged her cannon in anyway curious to see if Adam had been able to contact Chief.
"It appears your Metroid DNA has caused you to become a Metroid. Ordinarily, this would have happened immediately after the DNA transplant. Your Thoha genes must have slowed down the process. They were the only tribe capable of controlling the Metroids." Adam began to explain to the listing teen.
"You couldn't have covered this all in our last few briefings?" Samus scoffed.
Thinking for a moment. "How the hell would Adam know what Chozo DNA flows within me? The Federation database does not have records of that from me." But that brought up more thoughts. Looking back further into her life with the Chozo she didn't remember the process of her infusion. As recollections of that memory were wiped from her mind for some reason. Bringing up more questions. If she had a small amount of Thoha genes in her, was that the reason why the infant Metroid grew attached to her? Granting her the ability to control the baby simply with her presence?
"Though you possess their DNA, you are not a Thoha. Your physical prowess suggests that you must also possess Mawkin DNA." Adam continued to speak confusing the teen further.
"I have Mawkin too how's that possible?" Samus questioned greatly confused.
"Metroids are programmed to identify Mawkin as enemies." The AI said.
"That would explain why it's so hard to control it..." Samus was referring to her earlier issues when her Metroid powers fought against her own body and will. Having both tribes flowing through her veins created a war inside her mind and body.
"This suggests one thing to me."
"What is it?" Samus asked waiting for a reply.
"It is very probable that your metamorphosis occurred as a result of Raven Beak's attack. His presence awakened the Metroid's killer instinct. Since then your metamorphosis has accelerated. It can no longer be controlled." Adam's words were getting darker in nature. "You are now a Metroid, Samus Aran. Your very existence poses a grave danger to the galaxies."
Samus's heart sank, closing her eyes she wondered if her AI was correct? She already admitted to herself that she truly was struggling to control her Metroid instincts.
"However." Adam continued to speak. "There is no need to fear. You can still contribute to galactic peace. You need only to use your powers correctly."
Those last words caused Samus to open her eyes. Those choice of words were incredibly Chozo in nature. The teen had realized she had not been speaking with her AI.
"You have followed my instructions faithfully so far. Continue to do so. It's that simple."
Samus was right all along everything she found, everything she killed, was purposely set for her to discover.
"I consider your performance here on ZDR highly satisfactory. As I hoped, it has even awakened your Metroid powers."
Samus had become an inspiration for a greater plan.
"I was right to let you live during our first encounter. That one glimpse you showed told me everything."
Heart racing, playing her battle with Raven Beak through her mind. Samus knew he was talking about when he nearly suffocated her but her Metroid instincts kicked.
"Submit and offer up your power. My plan is the only way to bring order to the galaxies. Fulfill your destiny Samus. This is an order. Disobedience will not be tolerated."
"Disobedience won't be tolerated huh? You may know what's in my DNA. But you clearly don't know me..." Samus simply lifted her canon firing a super missile at the giant orb in front of her. Defying Raven Beak's orders.
The fake network station disintegrated around the teen, revealing Raven Beak waiting for her on his throne.
Samus kept her cannon aimed at the throned Chozo as he expressed his disappointment in her.
"You disappoint me..." Raven Beak spoke Chozo as he sent a flash of Samus's wiped memories to the her mind.
Samus winced behind her visor as a flash of memories flashed into her brain. She was in a Chozo infusion machine. The Thoha tribe members were infusing her with their Chozo DNA. Her vision was blurred by the infusers liquid but she could clearly identify the main DNA that was being infused into her, was Raven Beak's.
"My daughter."
Those words made Samus infuriated, she may have had his DNA flowing through her veins, but she was nothing like Raven Beak. Nor would she ever become like him. "You will never, be my father..."
Raven Beak stood up from his throne silently enraged. He would be the one to make the choice of disowning his young warrior daughter. His anger overtaking him, engaging his daughter in battle.
Samus struggled against her attacker at first. Many of Raven Beak's moves were similar to hers just in a more devastating manner. Making her regretfully realize she was truly taking after him in some ways. Raven Beak was overly cocky, which got in the way of his abilities and Samus easily overwhelmed him. She had a weak spot for getting too cocky during some of her battles, but this was not one of them. Blasting Raven Beak in the chest caused some of his armour to fall, burning the traditional Chozo silks he wore.
Raven Beak glared at his daughter's power in disgust. Rethinking his choice to let her live. Spreading his wings as if it were to intimidate the teen he took flight battling the teen from the air.
Samus was wise to his attack pattern though, and again easily overwhelmed the Chozo Warrior. She fired a charged shot, shooting one of Raven Beak's wings clean of.
Raven Beak stared as if not being phased by being grounded he ripped his other wing clean off of his back.
Samus cringed at the sound of the crunch of bones being broken as the mad Warrior threw away his wing like it was nothing. Blood from the clipped wings dripping down the Warrior's back onto the floor.
Giving one last go at the teen Raven Beak went to strike the girl, but she blocked it, he tried again only to be struck off balance throwing him to his knee.
Raven Beak's weakened state awoke Samus's Metroid killer instinct she leapt at him to siphon the rest of his life force, but was completely batted away by the powerful Chozo. Throwing her back across the room she had no time to react as Raven Beak flash shifted, lifting her off the ground, clutching her throat tightly in his massive hand once again.
"Did you truly believe you could defeat me? You over estimated yourself." Raven Beak scoffed at his overzealous offspring.
Samus tried desperately to reach out and drain the life force out of her captor. She was so close but so far away!
"You no longer serve any purpose. Even your Metroid DNA is no longer necessary. Do you want to know why?" Raven Beak's glowing red optics burning into Samus's soul.
Samus squirmed striking the armoured arm with her cannon in attempt to gain release. Only for Raven Beak to shake her, tightening his grip on her throat. "No!" She tightly screwed her eyes shut as she wriggled trying to escape.
"It is because I can now clone an army of the most powerful Metroid of all..."
Samus opened her eyes staring back into the blood red optics of the Mawkin leader. The teen's glowing hand became more intense the more she fixated on the Mawkin, the more her killer instinct hungered for Raven Beak's life force.
"Samus Aran."
Samus shook her head no taking her hand that was holding her up from the armoured suffocating hand giving her an insignificant amount of oxygen, but enough to keep her alive. Once her hand stopped holding her up her chances of survival plummeted to zero, as she tried to grab for the Mawkin's head again.
"No one can stand in my way. Not even you." Raven Beak continued his monologue while his daughter struggled in his hand. Sending another flash of memories to his daughter, showing her all the devastation he had previously caused, and that no one could defeat him.
Samus could feel her heart rate dropping as her body began to shut down from the lack of oxygen.
"Foolish daughter..."
The magenta glow from Samus's arm dimmed until there was no glow.
"Leave the galaxy to me. Close your eyes and rest."
Samus's eye lids grew heavy, as everything began to fade to black. Her armoured suit recognizing the teen's lifelessness, powered down in response.
"Power is everything." Raven Beak's last words would be exactly what would defeat him. As he watched the teen's head move it was almost unnoticeable.
Suddenly Samus's mutated hand lit up with an intense magenta glow, the Unique Metroid power inside of her taking over completely. Samus Aran was reanimated, screaming with fury she finally got what she wanted. Clutching her hand against Raven Beak's helmet the amount of strength and power in the forceful grab shattering the helmet in the process. She clung to Raven Beak's head like a Metroid would to it's prey. The Mawkin leader screamed in agony trying to shake the teen Metroid off of his head.
Samus was overpowered by her Metroid instincts, she couldn't even comprehend that she was causing the fortress to fall. She was acting completely like a Metroid in nature. Throwing Raven Beak to the floor, she kept him pinned, eagerly siphoning the life out of him. As the fortress plummeted to the ground shattering in a fiery explosion.
Samus immediately stood up as if nothing had happened. Hearing pained grunts coming from behind, she spun around to see Raven Beak glaring at her in anger, fear, disappointment, and defeat.
Samus was more focused on the floating jelly creature approaching the defeated Mawkin Warrior.
The purple X immediately plunged into the weakened host, causing Raven Beak to transform into a monstrous demonic beast.
Samus was unfazed by the creature, charging her hyper beam. She released the lengthy charge onto the approaching demon. Ending its life inches away from her body. The X defeatedly floated alone, waiting to be absorbed. Even though she already had his blood flowing through her veins, Samus had no desire to absorb anything that came from Raven Beak even if it was in the form of an X parasite. The violet parasite screeched painfully as the humanoid Metroid vaporized it with her hyper beam.
Taking a moment she sighed heavily examining her hideous new armour. "I'm a Metroid now, this is who I am?" Samus wondered if her reanimation from the dead was considered to be a rebirth and this Metroid suit was her new form? But she had no time to think as her suit alerted her to the planet beginning a self destruct sequence. Giving her three minutes to escape to her ship. "My missions are never complete without some sort of explosion..." she joked using her shine spark to get to the platform above.
The teen didn't waste time rushing through many of the sectors she had explored earlier. Once completely out of all facilities her ship came into view. Sprinting into her ship, Samus jumped into the pilot's seat her hand going for the controls.
"Don't!" Adam called out halting the teen's hand. "You'll drain the ship of its energy."
Samus's hand glowed starving for any source of energy to consume. Taking her hand away from her ship's controls, reminding herself of the lack of control she had over her Metroid powers. She could do nothing.
"Adam..." She could order Adam to engage the ship's emergency take off sequence but AI's took too long to run the emergency sequence without immediate orders after a countdown start, due to their perfectionist programming they were not abrupt enough to engage such drives. Especially since Adam had to override the ship's programmed in computer, and Samus would have to clear it with her hand print.
"How do I control this?" Samus's voice was shaky and full of fear.
"I cannot answer that for you. You're Chozo DNA is mostly made up of Raven Beak's blood, you must not have enough Thoha DNA to be able to control your Metroid instincts." Adam replied.
The sound of the world crumbling around the ship making Samus wonder if this was going to be her last moments alive? Trapped by her own power. Hearing a creature emerging from behind, the teen leaped out of her seat with her cannon aimed. It was Quiet Robe she could see he was possessed by the X. Samus hesitated to fire as she knew the Chozo was an X with his past memories of her intact.
The alive corpse respectfully bowed his head graciously, grateful for the hunter's efforts.
Samus put her cannon at ease, almost confused by the thankful bow.
The young Chozo Warrior had accomplished defeating Raven Beak, and the X. For that Quiet Robe would gift Samus with his Thoha DNA. Granting her the knowledge of control over her Metroid instincts.
Samus watched as Quiet Robe's corpse disintegrated into a red glowing X. It didn't allow her to chose whether or not to absorb it as it forcefully allowed itself to be absorbed by the teen.
The cockpit of the ship lit up with a blinding light as the teen's suit transformed. Samus quickly examined her body taking note that her suit had reverted back to the gravity suit. Wasting no more time she leapt into her pilot's chair initiating the emergency take off, she abruptly piloted the ship off the erupting planet.
ZDR exploded from the inside out, the shockwave from the explosion throwing Samus's ship through the fire. The violet ship emerged from the bright explosion. Samus was victorious, she had escaped death, once again saving the galaxies from impending doom.
But the question was, who would save her from those who wanted to harvest her unique DNA and abilities for their own dominant use?
"Why does everyone want to clone me?" Samus dread to think of a bunch of heartless clones of her. Confirming two sources that were interested in cloning her for their own use. Was enough for her to realize she could trust no one, but herself. And maybe a few choice Spartans.
Apologies for the long chapter but I thought it would be cruel of me to make it into smaller chapters with cliffhangers as it takes a long time to write these chapters. And once I started writing this one, I couldn't stop. The next chapterwill be filler that explores Samus's new powers, while we wait for Infinite to come out.
I have the sequel to this story in the works but it will not be released until this story is complete.
