"Now Questions?"
"Yes, I have two." A woman said. "Why did some of you show up with Blue Steel, and why did others show up half an hour after the first group?"
Jade sighed, not sure she wanted to explain so much. "Okay, part one was for those of us under the various police programs. Not sure how many you know about…"
"The Metahuman Internship Administration, The Blue Generation Initiative, and Project Redemption." The reporter said.
"Yea, those three." Jade confirmed. "Seven of us working with the police, and that means loads of limits. Like, when I faced Bastion, while the infection that changed her was driving her berserk, it had to be authorized because of my age. See, most of these projects are under age, and as such, only used sparingly, and always under supervision. In my case, Blue Steel, though there are multiple others looking out for my well being, as well as everyone else in the various initiatives. Anyways, they wanted this sense of community, but figured part one should be those of us already working with the police. After, once we talked, found out similarities, and dealt with lingering issues, like my worrying that Bastion would hate me for what I did, or insuring that those in the BGI trust me and Bastion, and those in MIA, god they need a new name, but they could work with those of us who were under more direct police training. Long story short, we needed to make sure those of us who were training with the police, one way or another, were comfortable working with those heroes not affiliated with the police, like Terrastar, Techbanger, and LA Justice."
"Was the inclusion of Techbanger and Terrastas an attempt to broaden the diversity of the group?" A reporter asked.
"Sigh, had to be asked, didn't it?" The Black Dahlia asked back. "Okay, short and sweet, while some people, like the current Constable, are enhanced, at great cost, might I add, all of the members of our various teams except Steel Copper have their powers from other, non-police based sources. Simply put, beyond some communities not trusting the police enough to make their inclusion easy, we have to recruit who we can find. Me, I was recruited, and worked hard to achieve. New Administrator improved our success rate, so far. Anyways, Bastion was just the first likely to succeed candidate since I came along. Warpath and Wildcard are children of police officers who had been exposed to something, and their children developed powers. The Velvet Phantom is a descendant of the original, and as such, trained with Warpath, back in the day. And while I'm sure you'll point out how white our group is, both Wildcard and Warpath are in the Latin community, while you have no idea what community Steel Copper is from. Honestly, it's not about that, except we do like more representation, cause more viewpoints allow us to better represent, but we don't choose who gets powers, we just take what we get, and do the most we can with them. So, how often did I step on that landmine?"
"You did great." The reporter who asked the question said.
"Okay, I'm thinking we have time for a few more questions, but understand, a lot of what you wanna know, I just don't know. So, ask…" The black clad hero announced, before fielding questions for the next ten minutes. Questions including who was in a relationship in the various groups, who had fan clubs, and other questions like that. In the end, Jade felt almost violated by the press, only saved because somehow they understood, some things she couldn't tell, and others were beyond anyone's ability to control.
From there, Jade and Wildcard loaded into a convenient police car, and were driven, along with Cool, off to what was being billed as the after party, the after meeting get together where the teen heroes would make their pitch to the three outsiders asking them to join up.
The entire drive over, Jade listened as Cool spoke about the press conference. He'd just stayed in the background, looking in control while allowing others to speak. 'Classic quiet cool guy. Doesn't say a word, and everyone things so much of him. Open his mouth, and who knows what might happen, but right now, Vega is eating up whatever he's serving, and I don't like it.'
Meanwhile, Phantom was showing the other two around the base they'd been given, the top three stories of an old, not that used police station the city owned and wouldn't want to get rid of. Lower floors contained a few police resources, low end investigations and others, but most of what used to be there had long ago been transferred to the main police headquarters, and as such, this was more a liaison station where the county police, the city police, and the various community police departments could get together and work stuff out. That, and host a group of kids in the upper stories originally meant for a metahuman strike force, save the police had trouble recruiting, then found out most of their recruits weren't as trustworthy as they'd have liked. The city didn't like to talk about the disaster that experiment turned out to be, with so over half the would be heroes actually working for one organized crime unit or another. That didn't even include how they'd worked to add diversity, and chose not to include some heroes who would have been better choices, had they just been more diverse.
"Anyways, they stripped out the original equipment, what they could, but we did managed to get some decent replacements." Phantom explained to the two possible recruits. "We do have a heavily reinforced training area, with walls and floors capable of taking a few solid hits. Not the most advanced training stuff, but still, it's a good place, and we now have space enough for each person to have their own space to get ready and relax after."
"You're gonna want me to modernize this place, aren't you? Techbanger asked.
"Maybe." The petite girl shrugged. "Mostly, wanted to let you know what we have, and see if your interested. You've seen what we got now, so what do you think?"
"How much control do the police want over us?" Terrastar asked.
"Not much." Phantom said. "Except what they're gonna want, knowing who you really are, that may be a bridge too far. So, yea. Interested? No, how about a loose affiliation? I'll pass that by V, our project manager, and see what she thinks, kay?"
Jade, somehow, felt like she was right back to where she'd been before. Only this time, she wasn't as alone as she once was, she just didn't see the connections. "So, who's this guy again?"
"Relax, your lover isn't interested in him like that." Koval told her, his warning hidden behind less then calming words. "But she has a past, and this one is obviously a part of that. This is a friend, nothing more, and no mater how chummy they may seem, he is no threat to your coupling."
Jade groaned, and tried to focus on this unofficial after party. It was as informal as could be arranged, with Wildcard and Warpath showing Cool the facilities hidden just down the street from the police headquarters, in an old police building that wasn't used as much these days. The facilities for The Blue Generation Initiative that Jade hadn't, before this moment, known existed.
It wasn't much, just a few hidden rooms, some basic equipment, and space to train, taking up the top couple of floors, but not offering much more then space at this moment. Jade wasn't impress, except for the fact that this was a totally voluntary space, unlike what Project Redemption did to it's charges back before V took over. Still, this was where Warpath and The Velvet Phantom trained, and where Wildcard would help hone her own abilities. Mostly, however, this was where they could host a couple of young heroes, possibly socialize, all without giving away any secrets. 'No, for that, they'd have to be cleared, and then, Project Redemption.'
Jade had seen it, even as she saw Tori and this guy called Cool talking like old friends. The young heroes who weren't being forced to attend still tended to use Redemption's facilities far more then this place. In fact, this was the first time Steel Copper or Achilles Junior had been in this place. Warpath was giving them a tour, while Wildcard, Tori, was being friendly to Cool.
"God, Trevor, I had no idea…" Tori was gushing.
"Yea, like anyone did." The boy replied. "I looked normal, and didn't show much of anything for the longest time. However, once I started developing my powers, THAT'S when they sent me here, to study with Danny, and maybe master my powers. No one knows why Danny, other then the guys a serious groupie. Turns out to have been a very good choice cause I needed a guy who had a clue. I had no idea about half the chiz I can do, so much stuff I can do that I never even thought about…"
"Amazing what kind of new things you learn when you study with someone with perspective." Tori agreed.
Trevor smiled, a smile reminiscent of Beck's, in that he was tall, attractive, solidly muscled, and Jade knew she'd have been jealous if she'd been single and saw Tori talking to this guy, no mater what. 'Either I'd want him, or her, and thanks to her mechanization, I'm so with her, so why the fuck is he hitting on her?'
"He's not." Koval again tried. "He's drowning in this ocean of Metahuman beings, and she represents a lifeline. Someone who can walk him through, help him see that his life isn't going to be that different. I sense a fear in him, of when he has to face a real opponent, and the stakes get high. Boy's young, with no desire to die. As much as he wants to do the right thing, he's not sure he can. Give him this, and remember, you're the one she wishes to fornicate."
Jade's sudden gasp even drew Cool's attention as her familiar finally found the right word to pull her from her deep, well developed sense of jealousy. "Sorry, just had a thought…'
"Wildcard, a word please." Steel Copper interrupted. "I as wondering about some of the specifics of the training gear around here…"
"Sorry, some of us still don't want everyone knowing our limits." Tori explained to the young man, and walked a few steps away with the armored hero. "So, whats up? I mean, sure, I get it, we're vastly under equipped up here. The testing chiz they have at Redemption, they were willing to fund all that under Masters, and we, we didn't have anyone but a liaison, who sucked at getting us the chiz we needed."
"Not worried about what they have here." Beck snapped. "Place will do as a face, someplace for us to show the world while using Redemption as our real training facility. No, I… Stop making Jade jealous. Girls still so majorly insecure, and you're not making it any easier…"
"I'm not making things difficult, it's just, Trevor's an old friend, Danny's cousin, and he's new to this whole metahuman thing." She hesitated, not sure what she'd done wrong, then proceeded. "Or rather, he's had a few years, but never let any of us know, so…"
"He's good looking, and he's been holding onto you since we got here." Beck warned. "Tori, even if he's a good guy, knows your with Dahlia, which given the eyes she gave everyone, they all know, he's still using you. He's gotta face us, talking to the rest of us, and to do that, he needs to stop unconsciously flirting with you."
"I never…" Tori started.
"Didn't say you were." The actor cut her off. "But in the movies, this is the buildup to a kiss, and if your not planning on moving on from your very jealous girlfriend, I suggest you nip that impulse in the ass, right now."
Jade, meanwhile, had decided to just be the bigger person, and guided by Koval, was chatting with Cool about his powers. The boy was still using his best social skills, unfortunately, because from the outside it looks a lot like flirting, trying to charm the dark witch. For several seconds, Wildcard watched, her mind taking in the way the boy drew her in, leaning forward to match her, looking like he was about to move in for the kiss…
"Okay, this ends now!" The reserve hero snapped. "Cool, Dahlia is with me, You know this, and I don't for one moment think you're trying to make trouble. However, the way you show you're listening, it looks, from the outside, like a form of flirting. Hell, it looks from the other side like flirting, except sometimes you're good at distracting from that, up until we're too close, and... Yea, not kissing you, not letting my girlfriend kiss you. Still, I'll help mentor you, just, my own origins, everything beyond who I am, those are for when I KNOW I can trust you. Kay?"
"Oh, yea, sure…" The boy blinked. "Sorry, I never, it's just, you're both so pretty, and I like being the center of attention, especially with pretty girls…."
"Then I'll show you around from here." Copper announced, and like that, the tension left the room.
Feeling a LOT better, Dahlia, Jade, sought out the Velvet Phantom, wanting to talk to her about something. "Yo, Phantom, got a moment?" Her girl was seeking out Warpath to arrange when they'd be heading home, though Tori might want to spend just a touch more time with her ex's cousin. Jade wasn't sure, and wasn't sure she wanted to know.
"That depends, what's on your mind?"
"Cool." Jade said. "He's a charmer, almost Beck level looks, and he's so smooth, most of the time…"
"Only to high school girls." Meredith dug.
"You're a high school girl." The blue eyed girl shot back. "Anyways, I was thinking, I know you could use a good…'
"GOD, not everyone is gay." The usually helpful girl snapped. "I get it, being with Tori worked for you. Hell, I doubt we'd find a better man for her then you. Just, you do realize, less then a fourth of the population could be happy in that kind of relationship, right?"
"Not where I was going." Jade chuckled. "Who…?"
"Beck, couple of the other guys in the know." Meri sighed. "I forget, cause I can't read you, that you're not like that. So, given whats happening, I'm gonna guess it's about… Okay, no idea, really. All I can think of now is who you're shipping together."
"Okay, er, I, I mean, I Was thinking…" Jade stammered.
"Get a hold of yourself., woman." Koval chided. "So she guessed. It happens. Either just tell her, or back off. Either way, you shouldn't come across as a confused child."
"Okay, who is it?" The Velvet Phantom asked, now very aware of what The Black Dahlia wanted. "Let me guess, Beck? Or are you hoping he hooks up with Treen? God, he needs some normal, cause he wasn't born for this like you and me."
"Actually, I was kinda hoping you and Cool could maybe…" Jade stopped. "He's a charmer, and…"
"You said that, and no." Meredith cut her off. "Not that I don't like his charms, just, that whole charming chiz, it's obviously a front. Boys majorly insecure, and by acting confident, controlled, cool, he's putting up his armor."
"You read him!"
"Like a book." The shorter girl confirmed. "Okay, by the numbers. I Was interested in someone, nothing more then a girl crush, but that was years ago. As I said, Trina isn't into girls, so…"
"Sorry, what?" Jade asked.
"Yea, you're not the only Bi hero here." Phantom sighed. "I like Beck, but as I said, boy needs his normal to balance this life. Rob, he'd do okay with one of us, only, He's Robbie. Let Cat have him."
"So we don't hook her up with Cool?" Jade wondered, but even she knew that was a bad idea.
"I can't read your thoughts, but your face is screaming that's a bad idea. Honestly, I kinda agree, it's a terrible idea. Better to let her and our resident nerd find whatever happy they can, and find him a better match. Problem, none of us fit. Me, I'm looking for a lot in a person, and now that I'm more secure in my abilities, that leaves far fewer people. Beck, Trina, maybe Andre, and a list of people you don't know, and that's about it. Sorry to say it, but if you're trying to hook him up so you won't worry about falling for his charms, then you'll have to look outside the group. And for the record, Cool may be part of THIS place, but he's not part of our group."
Jade relaxed. "True That." She nodded. "So, what to do about him…?"
Meredith, already done with this, smiled, made her excuse, and walked off before Jade did something so uncharacteristic of herself and tried playing matchmaker. 'Already have my hands full making sure Rob and Cat get together, and she doesn't accidentally crush him little nads." The agreeable girl thought.
Jade headed home shortly after her conversation with Meredith, feeling like she'd accomplished nothing around this new threat to her happiness. The old, green eyed monster was growling, once again letting her jealousy and insecurities threaten her relationship. 'Yes, Tori put a LOT of effort into this relationship, but this guy, Cool, he's a threat. To her, me, just about everyone. Only someone like Meri could resist, cause she's not gonna just fall for his charms…'
"Jade, you in there?" Blue Steel asked. The girl shifted to look at her would be mentor. "Okay, whats gotten into you."
"This cool guy… I mean, his name is Cool, and it turns out…" The blue eyed girl warred with herself about giving away secrets.
"Danny's cousin, right?" The experienced hero asked. "Yea, I know who he is. Boys did some cross training with the police, and as a result, I know a lot about his powers. His abilities around moisture and cold are impressive, more then the police usually deal with. Still, his insecurities are worrying. I know, he comes across as cool and mature, but that boy, guys like him, sometimes the whole cool, controlled image is their front, and behind it, just as many insecurities as anyone else. He's on the right track, but have you noticed, when he has a hot girl on the hook, not one moment of hesitation? Makes him look confident, when in reality, he just doesn't care if he's about to ruin a relationship. Slave to his libido. And he's so worried about what people will think of him if he doesn't just go for it. In that one way, Beck's better, cause with Beck, he lets the flirting feed his ego, but he doesn't push for things with most girls while hoping to maintain his cool image. No, Trevor is a long way from being the cool guy he comes across as. He just fronts really good."
"Fronts?" Jade asked.
"Best word for the situation." The police hero shrugged. "So, think on this. Tori wants you. Her luck power brought you to her. Not thinking she was getting a loaner to hold her over until she found him, or the next guy. No, my youngest wants forever. Hell, my oldest wants forever, just, until then, a string of hot guys who worship her. No way in hell either of them are gonna let you fall for his charms. Plus, you're majorly insecure yourself, so you fall for the initial charms, the raw attraction, and feel horrible after, cause you don't have it in you yet to stay cool and pull away. EVERYONE feels attracted, even outside a relationship. You, you just need to trust in yourself not to make mistakes, and find that voice inside that will warn you when you're close."
"Right here." Koval chimed in. "I'll snap you out of it, at lest until your mature enough on your own to know the difference between momentary attraction and actual want."
"Need to ask Abra, are all familiars that pushy?" The goth muttered.
"Staying out of that conversation." David announced. "Come, lets get you home. We're patrolling this week, I'll send you the scheduled. Just, you know, to be seen together. Plus, after, or before, depending, you and Tori can have some time together, assuming no emergencies."
"Of course." Jade nodded. "Of course."
It was that same week, the day after the informal yet oh so formal meeting of the teen heroes, that Jade was once again face to face with the man who'd started all of this, her grandfather, Johnathan Sinclair. She could see the age in his face, how time and tragedy had worn down his youthful looks to this gray fox who still charmed his share of women. "Grandpa."
"Jade." The man was all business today. "How's the program going. I need to know, are you still going to be able to go to collage? I tried talking to your probation officer, back when this started, and he kept giving me bleaker and bleaker reports about your behavior."
"That was when the first guy was running the program." Jade informed him. "Me almost dying during a police training where he insisted they use live ammo, despite knowing my limits, that kinda pushed things to a head. All his local political contacts, not enough when the feds started talking about taking over. In the end, V took over, and I still can't believe how far the whole program has come. They now have twice the number of probation heroes, as well as us cross training with a whole bevvy of police heroes, all under the Police Metahuman Training Program, or MTP for short."
"I've noticed you're working with Blue Steel more." The old man nodded. "I just, you're going to school, making movies. That's what we agreed to. My daughter was the only member of the family who understood just how dangerous being a criminal really was. Once I had the money, I never wanted to hand the empire off to a child of mine. I wanted to hand the whole thing off to some subordinate, and have a secure fortune for my children. Pandion wasn't supposed to exist beyond me…"
"He won't." Jade insisted. "Achilles Junior took his place, along with The Black Dahlia, and…" She closed her eyes. "I had a voice in who got the crown. I helped train the guy, a friend of mine, even if I hate admitting he's a friend, but it's great to have him, cause for reasons I don't fully understand, he understands. He wants this for the right reasons. Given who he is, I'd have never guessed he'd do this for the right reasons. And, and, and he's been there, helped me, when I had no idea who could ever understand what I'm going through. Even my girlfriend…. Yea, I have a girlfriend now…" She held her breath, hoping this man she loved wouldn't hate her for that.
"Does she make you happy?"
"Very."
"Then I want to meet her." The old man insisted. His harsh features softened. "But I'm very happy for you. For finding love, for finding a friend who'll understand, and for finding your way back to being a film maker. It's really the legacy I wanted."
Jade hugged the man, and then, whispered "And I'm even liked now by the people in Project Redemption…"
"Of course you are." Her grandfather said. "Just, never, and I mean never, do anything as desperate as what my contacts said you did to have that kind of power again. My legacy is depending on you, and a few of your cousins, to make something of your lives, now that we've secured my fortune. Do something constructive, and make me proud…"
"Of course." Jade smiled, not able to believe she could. Thing seemed to work out when going with the Tori flow. 'Oh my FUCKING CHIZ!' Realization hit, and Jade knew it was only a mater of time before her girlfriend got lucky.
Eric Walker met Jade at school, waiting for her to finish with the days activities. Jade still was very limited in her after school activities, even being forced to give up her captaincy of the Ping Pong team. There was a list of approved activities, those required by the school, but otherwise she followed the same routine as always, including meeting Eric after school for her ride into the program. Today, Reggie was talking to the man. "Jade." Eric greeted her.
"Whats this now?" Jade asked.
"Just getting filled in on your progress." The associate probation officer informed her. "Reg here was telling me about your progress. Says he's happy with how you're coming along, and you should be able to defend yourself if for some reason your powers fail you. Still, main point was getting you in better shape, and I'm happy I don't have to tell my girl about that, cause checking you out, even for work, kinda scuzzy."
Jade chuckled. "Tori coming with?" Reg asked.
"Meeting me there." Jade lamented. She did enjoy the days her girlfriend rode in with her. Only Tori was now recording her album, and that took a decent amount of after school time. "So, lets go…"
"HOLD THE CAR!" Screeched Robbie as he raced towards the vehicle. "Cat's coming. She just, you know, she wanted to be here on time, but one of the teachers wanted to go over something, and then she stopped to do something, and…" He caught his breath.
Reggie shook his head. "Looks like you need more workout time." The police trainer chided his charge. The man had functionally become all the gangs trainer, with Andre the sole exception, because Jade hadn't figured out how to include him yet.
"You coming with?" Jade wondered.
"No, have something to do." Rob said. "I just, I got a new, er, used car, Beck helped me rebuild this junker, and Sinjin insisted on a few improvements, and now I have my own car, and I'm heading over to the other facility later, just because…"
Cat came skipping up, not a care in the world. "What? I have…" She checked her phone, "Thirty, no, twenty six…"
"Just get in the car." Eric groaned.
The two girls got in, with Cat smiling. "What?" Jade growled.
"Just, sometimes it's nice sitting with my bestest friend, and not having her play touching games with her girlfriend." Cat replied. "So, Eric, how's the family?"
Jade would listen to the small talk while they rode in, reminded of what Cat often contributed to their friendship. 'Cat, Tori, both care about people, so they help me catch up, learn, about the people around me, without having to give up my gankish attitude. Who knew I could care about any of these freaks, anyways.'
Along the way, she saw a billboard, freshly put up, and her veiled image standing behind Blue Steel, pushing the idea that the police are on your side, just as long as you don't break the law. 'Wonder how long before that gets defaced.' She wondered, letting that moment linger. Cat, for her part, never looked up from her phone.
Before long, they reached the police headquarters, and the special elevator they'd take down to the program. Eric had other, non-meta charges, but still walked the two down, just to check in, and often, to grab some coffee from the lounge.
"Dahlia, Bastion." The armored guard greeted them.
"Simmons." Jade said, having learned, from Meredith, how to read the peoples aura's just enough to differentiate who was who.
"V isn't in today, so training, and maybe a quick patrol." The armored figure told them as they signed in, then proceeded to their rooms to get changed.
"Kay kay." Cat chirped, skipping through the facilities towards her space.
Jade just admired the way things had changed. The guards, the scientists, everyone now acted more on their side, support in their goals and mission, as opposed to being adversaries trying to break them.
"Dahlia, a word please." One of the scientists stopped her. Cat happily skipped ahead.
"What?" Jade felt impatient. 'Hoping to head out with Steel today. God, we only head out a couple of times each week, sometimes towards the evening, and yet, I just, it's funny, cause his daughter is trying to get into my panties…' The last thought wasn't as off as she'd hoped. Tori made it clear that they'd known each other a long, long time and sex was on the table as of the fifth date, a landmark that had already passed. 'She's teasing me, of course, but only a mater of time before I give in. Girls just wants everything from me. Wonder why I was ever jealous of Cool?'
"V is monitoring some situations up in the San Francisco area, and may have a new recruit or two by the end of the month." The man explained. "Kinda hoping you'd be willing to show them the ropes, assuming it happens this time."
"If it happens." Jade echoed. It was extremely rare to find a potential recruit, to the point where they were looking all over California. Even when they found one, the psychological profile had to show a potential for redemption. A low enough bar that, so far, no one had both met it, and wanted to go to Los Angeles to participate. "That it?"
"Bastions tests came back." The man started. "She's a powerhouse. Not as potent as you, but still, girls a force."
"Adjust her training, and keep V informed." Jade replied, turning to go get changed. They had new simulations to run, and she wanted them done before her civics lecture, and possibly her time out patrolling.
She found Cat, already in her jumpsuit, waiting. "So, what'd they want?" The petite girl asked.
"Just will I help mentor the new kids, if we get some, and to let me know they're adjusting your training program, cause your stronger then they'd thought."
"Right." Cat nodded. "So, you gonna get changed, or are you waiting for Wildcard to help?" The smirk was dangerous. Jade just entered her own space, and started to change.
"Okay, Cat, whats up?" Jade asked through her door, even as she stripped out of her street clothes, and started strapping on the light body armor she wore under her dress. Layers of protection, to make sure she didn't die out there on the street.
"Just, things are changing, and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do about it." The shorter girl said. "Do I root for Tori, who I suspect is the one who wants to see if you two can have babies, or you, who needs someone to love you, and whats my role in all this?"
"How're you and Rob doing?" Jade asked back.
"Fine, I guess." Cat smiled. "Got him to run out to let you guys know I might be late, even though I had, what was it, like twelve seconds left."
"Are. YOU. Dating?" Jade spelled it out.
"Yes. We. Are." Cat said back. "So, why are we talking like a star fleet captain?"
"Okay, just, make sure you two protect yourselves." Jade told her. "As in, make sure neither of you does something your not ready for…"
"Still pristine." Cat almost bragged. "Told Robbie we're gonna wait until I'm very sure, like collage, or after we're married, or I feel really needy, before we broach that subject."
"And I want you to keep that innocence for as long as you can." Jade finished. "Okay, the transformation is complete." Her door opened to reveal her in today's dress. While the classic funeral dress had become her costume, she often changed which long black dress she wore, just to generate a sense of style.
The two girls walked out to the training hall, ready to start. 'Long, long way to go, but I'm feeling it now. I can, no I will finish this. The Black Dahlia is a force for good, and thanks to this program, I've already saved myself, and my grandfather. Still, long way to go. Like, how the holy hell am I gonna rope Andre into this world…'

Okay, this was the original end tot he story, but I may have written a few extra chapters as I went along. Once I organize them, edit, etc, we'll see if I have more to share. So, review.
