Hamilton and Laurens were both already there when Eliza walked in the next morning. However, she was surprised to see that Washington was sitting at his desk too. He looked up as Eliza walked in, "Ah, Schuyler!" he said, "Just who I wanted to see,"
"Sir?"
"Hamilton! Laurens! Come over here for a minute please,"
Hamilton and Laurens both looked up from their desks and joined Eliza in front of Washington. He picked up a letter from his desk and passed it to Hamilton, "This arrived from Congress this morning. It is a list of supplied they are willing to send us. I need you three to go through our current stock, as well as this new list, and draw up plans for distribution,"
"Yes sir," Laurens and Eliza said.
Hamilton nodded slightly; however, it was quite apparent that he was too absorbed in the letter from congress to be fully paying attention. Laurens coughed causing Hamilton to look up. "What? Oh, yes, sir,"
"Dismissed."
Eliza, Hamilton, and Laurens walked back over to their desks, and all crowded around Hamilton's desk. Hamilton laid out the letter so they could all see it and Eliza scanned the list. There was a large list of weapons and ammunition, and another list of food. It seemed like a lot to her but judging by the frowns on Laurens and Hamilton's faces they had been hoping for much more,
"It's as if they don't read a single one of the letters I send them," Hamilton grumbled, "If they did, they would know how much we need to actually feed an army,"
Laurens laid his hand on Hamilton's shoulder, "Let's go and take inventory before we start saying how dire it is,"
"We both already know how dire it is," Hamilton muttered, but he got out of his chair and followed Laurens.
Laurens led Eliza and Hamilton over to a large barn. He pushed open the doors to reveal lots of large sacks stacked against the walls.
"What should I do?" Eliza asked,
"We need to record exactly what we have here," Hamilton said, "So start wherever you want,"
"And once we've done in here, we've got to do the weapons store," Laurens added.
They each reached for a sack and started to document their contents.
"Is this normal work for you?" Eliza asked after a while,
"Not really, there's usually more writing involved," Laurens replied,
"Depends how you define it," Hamilton said, "If you define it as fixing Congress' mess then yes, we do that all the time,"
"Alex…"
"I just think that as we're the people fighting the war, they should listen to us when we tell them what we need,"
"I'm pretty sure we're going to be doing alright on the ammunition front," Laurens said,
"That's something," Eliza pointed out,
"No, because it shows a lack of understanding about how an army is run," Hamilton said, "They understand that in order to fight we need weapons, however, they don't understand that in order to have soldiers to fire said weapons we need food. It is a complete mismanagement of their funds,"
"Well, I'm sure you'll correct them," Eliza said,
Laurens rolled his eyes, "Don't encourage him. He did actually write out a proposed spending plan, it took me and Laf ages to persuade him not to send it,"
"Well, I would like to read it," Eliza said,
Hamilton beamed at her, "I'd love to talk you through it some time,"
"I'm sure you had some amazing ideas,"
Laurens coughed loudly, "If you two don't mind,"
Eliza blushed slightly and Hamilton grinned at Laurens, "Not at all,"

The three of them worked through the day, carefully cataloguing everything in the barn, until it was dark outside.
The silence in the barn was interrupted by Eliza's stomach rumbling,
"I agree," Laurens said, "It's time for dinner. We'll do the weapons store tomorrow,"
Eliza nodded and followed Laurens over to the door,
"You may as well come with us Alex, you literally have to walk past the mess tent to get to HQ,"
"I have so much work to do," Hamilton said stubbornly, "I haven't written a single letter today!"
"Are you sure you won't join us?" Eliza asked,
"Sorry but I really do have to finish these letters,"
"God forbid you take a night off," Laurens teased, "Come on Elijah, Laf and Herc will probably already be there."

After dinner, once Laurens, Lafayette and Mulligan had gone back to their tents, Eliza laid out another plate of food and took it to Washington's tent. She wasn't surprised to find the tent empty aside from Hamilton sitting at his desk with his head bent over a piece of parchment.
He looked up and smiled at Eliza when he heard her approach his desk,
"I brought you dinner," Eliza said, placing the plate down on the desk,
"Thank you,"
"I wasn't sure if you actually eat. I'm still not,"
"John or Washington normally make me eat at some point,"
"Well today they won't have to," Eliza said as she turned to leave,
"Wait!" Hamilton called after her, "You can stay for a bit if you'd like,"
Eliza smiled at him and perched on the side of his desk, "OK then,"
"So, Mr Schuyler, what do you think you'll do once the war is over?"
Eliza rose an eyebrow at Hamilton, "Wow, straight in with the hard questions,"
"Well, where would you like to start then?"
"I don't know. Where are you from?"
Hamilton shrugged and glanced down at the paper in front of him, "Nowhere,"
Eliza scoffed, "You can't be from nowhere, everyone's from somewhere,"
"OK, well, nowhere important then,"
"I doubt that's true,"
Hamilton sighed, "It doesn't matter where I'm from, what matters is that there's so much more I'm going to do in the future,"
"Of that I have no doubt," Eliza smiled, "Although I don't think coming to dinner with us will hinder your ambitions,"
"If I don't finish this letter today then I shall have to finish it tomorrow, and if I have to finish it tomorrow then there is something else I won't get done and will have to do the next day, and so on, and so on, and so many things might get missed or forgotten and that thing might be my legacy,"
"Wow, you've thought about this a lot,"
"Not enough to figure out what my legacy is,"
"I don't think that's something you can control," Eliza speculated,
"No," Hamilton agreed, "and that's why I can't stop because I don't know which thing will be what I'm remembered for,"
Eliza looked at Hamilton for a second, "You have a very black and white view of legacies," she said,
"Do I now?"
"You do. I don't think having everyone remember you is the only way of getting a legacy. I think if you make a positive impact on the lives of the people around you then that is also a legacy and it's a good legacy to have,"
"That is an interesting theory Mr Schuyler," Hamilton mused,
"Well, it's what I aim to do with my life," Eliza said, "I aim to make the lives of the people I care about better,"
Hamilton smiled at her, "I'm sure you will achieve that,"
Eliza picked up Hamilton's now empty plate, "I'll see you tomorrow," she said before she walked back out of HQ, leaving Hamilton to finish he's letter.
