Troublesome Day.
The boy was cursing his luck, as he was sitting in between two of the Quintuplets, and one of them was the girl that he had crashed against when he arrived at the school.
"What the hell are you doing here anyways?" - Nino asked, keeping her usual aggressiveness.
Fuutarou wasn't interested in getting into fights, especially with someone as influential as the Nakano. He simply said - "Sorry" - and tried to move on with his day. Yet, as fate would have it, he had already made an impression. Not exactly a good one either.
As the day went forward, he listened to the whispers around the classroom, talking about how he had crashed into Nino before getting to school. He tried to ignore them, but was unable to do so, and was simply waiting for the day to be over. Lucky for him, since it was the first day, it wasn't too heavy, and classes finished quick enough for him to try to leave.
As he was going to however, someone grabbed his arm, it was a girl with short hair.
"Hello?" - Fuutarou said confused, looking at this girl.
"Hi. I'm sorry that my sister treated you like that, she can get a bit... Intense. I'm Yotsuba Nakano, a pleasure to meet you" - with a warm smile, the girl extended her hand to Fuutarou, which the boy took.
"Thanks for the apology, but I have to go home and..." -
"So soon? Really? Come on, I'm not done apologizing, I'll take you for something to eat at Junes" -
"Junes...?" -
"You don't know about Junes?" - Yotsuba looked at Fuutarou's confused look, and it didn't take her long to understand - "Oh! You're new here in Inaba right? More reason to bring you to Junes, I'll show you around town as well" -
"Thanks but it's not..." -
"No buts, come on!" - grabbing Fuutarou's arm, Yotsuba dragged him outside the school and took him on a trip around town.
Walking around Inaba, Fuutarou was surprised to see how calm the town was, and that it was strangely... Foggy.
"Do you know why the town's like that?" - the boy asked.
"No one knows, but no one is really bothered by it. Sure, it may be annoying at the mornings, but it's nothing we can't handle" -
"It's annoying to me..." -
"Well, you're new here, give it a few months and you'll get used to it and... Oh, we're here" - both of them arrived at Junes, and Fuutarou sat down as Yotsuba was going to order - "What do you want?" -
"Are there any burgers?" -
Yotsuba laughed - "Sure, but they might not be the same as they are back in the big city. I'll ask one for both of us, wait here" -
Fuutarou sat down as his phone rang, he took it out to see a message from Dojima.
"Where are you?"
"At a local called Junes, a girl from school brought me, one Yotsuba Nakano"
"A Nakano invited you? Well color me shocked. Anyways, I need you to be here before 6 to take care of Nanako"
"Sure, I'll be there"
"Thanks"
Fuutarou put his phone back in his pocket as Yotsuba returned with two burgers - "Here I am, enjoy the superior burger" -
"I'll be the judge of that. They may be good but..." - as soon as Fuutarou bit the burger, the flavor invaded his mouth, better than any burger he ever ate before.
"Like it? I knew you'd enjoy it" - Nakano said with a smile as Fuutarou kept eating the burger. She sat down next to him and started eating as well.
As the boy was eating, Yotsuba got a call on her phone, it was her sisters.
"Hello? I'm here at Junes, eating a burger with the new guy. Why am I with him? I wanted to apologize for what Nino did to him earlier after the accident. Calm down, we're just having a meal. Yeah, yeah I'll be at home as soon as we're done... Bye" -
Fuutarou stopped eating and looked at the girl - "Not a pleasant conversation?" -
"Nino got angry when I told them I was with you. Seems you two really started on the wrong foot" -
"I tried to apologize but she didn't listen. Is she always like this?" -
"Yeah, but don't worry too much about it, I'll try to calm her down later at home" -
"That's... Awfully nice of you" -
"Well, people usually say I'm awfully nice" - Yotsuba laughed after saying that - "Oh, by the way, have you heard of the Midnight Channel?" -
"The what now?" -
"The Midnight Channel. It's a legend from 'round here, they say that if you look at a TV that's turned off exactly at midnight and during a rainy night, you'll see your soulmate" -
"Really? Have you ever tried it?" -
"Not personally, but Nino has, aaaaaaand she always ends up falling asleep in front of the TV so she never gets to see anything" - after saying that, the pair burst into laughs - "You should try it later tonight, I heard that it's going to be raining today" -
"No thanks, I'm not into that sort of stuff" - he quickly declined the offer.
"Bummer" -
The pair continued to eat and talk until Yotsuba had to go home, saying goodbye to Fuutarou before reminding him once again of the Midnight Channel.
The boy went to his house, and on the way he couldn't stop thinking about what the girl mentioned. Seeing your soulmate on TV. There was no way that something like that was true... Right?
He checked the weather after arriving, it was going to rain later that night. He knew that he didn't have anything important to do, and Nanako would be asleep by that time.
After a while of thinking about it, curiosity got the best of him. At 12 o'clock, after everyone was sleeping, he got up and went to the living room, and sat in front of the TV. Suddenly, it rose to life with static.
His eyes opened with surprise, and soon enough, he saw someone's image in the static, a human figure which slowly started to gain more features. He thought he'd be able to figure out the figure's identity, yet he was unable. After a few seconds, the static returned, and the TV turned off not much later.
Disappointed yet more curious now, Fuutarou went back to sleep. Maybe Yotsuba would like to hear this tomorrow.
