Chapter 8
Sam listened to the woman and managed to get the Mercedes in enough time but what was troubling him was her response to his bite. He hadn't had to bite anyone before so this was new for him as well but he'd seen people marked before and their reaction wasn't this intense. She passed out and hadn't woken up, he got them out of range of the vampires and that alone made him tense up.
His parents told him about the clan of vampires that lived among them, he'd never seen them and was always told that they had an… understanding. He was entirely sure what that meant and never needed to question it until now, the two women chased them until he reached the southern point of the woods. He'd only been this far once with his father, his father had taken him on a run to help him get used to shifting and they'd gone too far out.
He wasn't entirely sure why or how he'd remember this place but it was the only place that came to his mind when he was told to take Mercedes somewhere safe. He couldn't take her back to his house nor the pack house, not until he knew who he could trust and who he couldn't. He stumbled upon the old cabin a few years back on one of his nightly runs and looked into the property but no one knew about nor owned it so he started fixing it up whenever his parents would bug him about finding his mate.
It was a decent sized cabin and lucky for them it was as secluded as they came. Even more lucky, there was electricity and a deep freezer that housed meat, they wouldn't starve.
"Ow." He heard and walked into the bedroom where he'd put her and saw her starting to stir.
He watched slowly open her eyes before she felt around where he'd bitten her. Even from where he was standing he could see the mark and it looked like it hurt.
She winced when she felt her sore skin before making eye contact with him. "What happened? What caused this?"
"I did… I marked you." Sam answered and watched a wide variety of emotions cross her face.
"What does that even mean!" She asked.
"Simply put it means-" Sam started before stopping and groaning out. He shook his head, having forgotten it would hit him first before it hit his pack. He'd marked someone which moved up the time for the satyriasis, every wolf would be jolted into a frenzy of hormones. He felt everything, his blood flowing, the air moving around him and the primal urge to devour the woman laying in the bed.
He could also smell everything, the fresh water stream outside, the flowers and her. He could smell the smell of her sweat and perfume, it was causing a stir in him and he needed to get away from her.
"Are you okay?" He heard and looked at her, he knew he looked crazed because he felt it. He needed to shift to control his growing urges, he needed to run off the first wave before he did something he regretted.
"Excuse me." Sam managed to get out before quickly leaving the room and the little cabin. He walked as far away from the home before allowing himself to switch, he let out a loud growl and began to run as fast as he could.
He could feel the dirt under his paws and the wind blowing through his fur, his body was still on fire and all those years of not engaging with a woman hit him like a ton of bricks. He let out howl and started running further until he reached a clearing and saw a woman standing there.
She looked ethereal and he could feel something radiating off of her, the same thing he felt when he was near Mercedes. It was a powerful feeling, she was mouthing something but he couldn't make it out. He inched closer feeling his body starting to calm but there was a part of him telling him to not let his guard down.
"Wolf." He heard her this time, her voice was strong but soothing at the same time.
He only tilted his head acknowledging that he understood and heard her, if she was a witch she could try to invade his mind like the one before but she didn't.
"I've been waiting for you."
James was the first to wake, his head was pounding and his senses were tingling. He looked around and only saw Yvette laying there, he placed a hand on her forehead and willed her awake but nothing happened.
"Yvette!" He said, shaking her softly but got no response.
He pulled her up and tried to will her awake again but nothing happened, he checked for a pulse and noticed it was faint. Something was wrong, he could feel it, there was something strange in the air. It was a familiar feeling, a daunting one, one he hadn't felt in decades.
His mother gave off the same energy but she was dead, his father told him so when he was seven. He remembered that day like it happened minutes ago, the group of strange people coming to take her and his father telling him that she wasn't well. Then a week later, they had a funeral because she'd passed away from her sickness.
He never found out what kind of sickness she had but he was always told it was something that even his father couldn't fix. He didn't remember much from his time with her but there was one memory that stood out the most. They had been in the woods going for a walk and his mother randomly stopped, it was almost like she was frozen.
She kept staring off at nothing but he remembered her muttering something.
The darkness will take the light.
He'd told his father about her mutterings and that's when the strange men would come by in secret at first, always when she was gone and he noticed her slowly starting to unravel after that. The only reason he remembered that was because she kept trying to run off with him, they'd leave in the middle of the night and make it to the county line before his father would catch up with them.
"Ow." James looked down and saw Yvette's eyes fluttering open.
"Hey, you okay?" James asked and she shook her head, her body felt… empty.
"Something's wrong. I can't feel my powers, I can't feel your energy anymore." Yvette replied and James sighed.
"I don't feel mine either… I think she took our powers."
Yvette sat up and sighed. "She's too powerful, this isn't… this isn't what they said would happen. There's something else or someone else manipulating this whole thing because there's no way she's containing that much power."
"We may have bigger issues." James said, looking down at his hand.
"What do you mean?" She asked and looked down and noticed a thin line of blood across his palm. "You were cut?"
James shook his head. "No, we need to get out of here. This is no longer a safe place and wherever she is, she is safer away from us."
"What the hell are you talking about? I'm not leaving my child!" Yvette protested.
James grabbed her and pulled her up, shocking her how aggressive he was being. "You don't have any powers, I don't have any powers and our child is a ticking time bomb. She has your powers, my powers and she might even have some more from unknown sources. The blackout, the lack of light is because of her, she was never the light Yvette! She was… couldn't be the light if she's my child.''
Yvette shook her head. "No it says the one of light and dark would be the undoing of another or something…"
"One of light and one of dark would be the undoing." He corrected. "You witches change and flip things to make them sound better than what they really are, the prophecy was about two people not one. One of light and one of dark. She is not the light, Yvette."
"You know more than what you're saying." She said taking a step away from him. James just huffed before grabbing her hand and guiding her outside, it was dark but not too dark for her to see what he needed her to see.
"Look, do you see what our child did? She did this! She is the reason there is no light! If darkness claims her this is how it will always be, if the light claims her then it could be better… I don't really know but I do know that because of everything we did, she has darkness inside of her. No amount of love or affection was ever going to change that, it has always been inside of her." He explained.
"I…"
"She had to be in the woods that night, he had to find her… she was never going to the light so I did what I needed to do." James said before guiding them to his car, he helped Yvette inside then got in and started driving away from their small town.
"You did this.' Yvette said after a few minutes. "You're the reason she's out there unprotected and god knows what else!"
James shook his head. "You had one job and that was to teach her about her powers, I did what I had to get the ball rolling but this isn't all on me."
Yvette shook her head, reeling from the information he'd just dumped on her before realizing something. "Why is your hand still bleeding?" She asked, looking at the steady flow of blood trickling down the steering wheel.
James gripped the wheel tighter and shook his head. "It's a blood seal."
Yvette nodded slowly, her mother had told her about those a long time ago. A blood seal was something witches did to let them know when someone they didn't want around came back. The only thing was that she didn't know why or how he would know how to do this, there was no way possible for him…
"Your gears are turning I see, stop while you're ahead Vette."
She picked up on the tone change in his voice and realized she was in danger. She looked over at James and felt a tingle rush throughout her body, she needed to get away from him but without her powers she couldn't hold him off.
"What have you done?" She asked and he chuckled.
James sped up and drove further out of the county. "Did your mother ever tell you that when a healer and witch have a child, the healer feels everything the child feels?' He questioned and Yvette looked at him confused.
"My mother died before I found out I was pregnant."
James rolled his eyes and sped up some more, Yvette knew if she was going to do anything now would be the time. So she slowly kicked her shoes off and braced herself for what she was about to do but right before she could, James slammed on brakes causing her to jerk forward and hit her head on the dash.
"SHIT!" James shouted, shifting the gear into reverse but it was too late.
The woman standing there simply lifted her hand and the car shut down completely. He tried to turn it over but it wouldn't start, he thought of running but he knew he wouldn't get far. His door was ripped from its frame and he felt himself being forcibly removed from his seat.
"WITCH!" James shouted before being knocked out completely.
Sam and the woman looked at each other for a few more moments before she moved closer to him, he wasn't too keen on allowing strangers near him especially in his wolf form but he allowed her to get close enough to touch him.
Her hands were cooling, he could feel his body calming and his urges subsiding. Nothing could stop them but for a brief moment he could think more clearly and his heart stopped racing.
"Easy, you are safe." She said gently grabbing his snout and lifting it so that she could look into his eyes. "You understand me?"
Sam nodded.
"Can you speak?" She asked tilting his head side to side before letting go and circling him. "Alpha?"
Sam nodded again, following her as she circled, she was sizing him up.
"You're bigger than most." She said and Sam knew this to be true. An average wolf was smaller but the Steelridge wolves were not, they were large and very intimidating.
"I assume when you shift, you lose your clothing?" She questioned and Sam nodded. "Which means you can't go back there naked with my grandchild there, you started your mating season when you marked her didn't you?"
Sam only looked at the woman before taking a step back from her, he didn't feel uneasy around her but something was triggering him to move away.
"I'm not a threat to you but you are in danger. My grandchild is not what everyone is telling you she is, the darkness they spoke of is coming from within her. You marking her signaled every Alpha in close vicinity that their time is coming to an end." She explained.
What do you mean?
"He speaks. My name is Angela Jones, James Jones is my son and he is Mercedes' father. You are Samuel Evans and your father is Dwight Evans, who is the son of Howard Evans."
I still don't understand?
"You and my grandchild are fated to be together, there's something tying you two together but it's all dependent on if she chooses light."
I thought she was the light?
"You really think someone capable of causing a streak of darkness is the light?" Angela questioned.
How do you know that I'm the light?
"You're an unmated Alpha, you haven't been with anyone for years and you protected her from a threat she could've easily eliminated on her own. You're selfless and trusting."
Is she not?
"She's had to suppress her powers her entire life unknowingly and now she's finally accessing them. Now think about it for a moment, a young woman who has immeasurable power finally accessing it."
Sam understood what she was saying. Mercedes was dangerous and she would only become even more dangerous the closer she got to darkness.
Why aren't you telling her this?
"She doesn't know me."
You said you were her grandmother.
"I am but I've gotten the chance to meet her and I can't… not until I handle a few other threats first. You will continue to keep her safe, right?" Angela asked.
Other threats?
"There's far more worse things in this world and some of them don't even have powers, they just have a great deal of hate and a drive like none other."
I will keep her safe.
"I know you will." She said turning around before tossing him a set of clothes. "You should know, if your parents didn't inform you but when you bite someone they feel everything you feel."
Sam tilted his head before shaking his head and he noticed the smirk that crossed her face.
She turned, allowing him a chance to shift back, which he did before quickly dressing in the clothes she provided, they were a perfect fit.
"What are you saying?" He asked and she looked over her shoulder before responding.
"That urge you have will intensify once you're around her. She isn't a wolf like you, it will affect her differently." She answered before moving closer and placing a hand over his heart and the over on his forehead.
Sam started to move away before he felt a rush of energy crash through him that made him exhale deeply. He'd never felt such power before and it terrified him but also exhilarated him.
"You are the light Samuel Evans." She said softly before she was gone. Sam had to blink to make sure his mind wasn't playing tricks on him, this was far more deeper than what he was even told and now he had the job of making sure Mercedes was protected but the mere thought of him made want something else.
Her.
"Yvette, wake up."
Yvette placed her hand on her head feeling something stick before looking and seeing it was blood, she started to sit up but was immediately pushed back down.
"You need to stay this way until we can get you cleaned up." Her ears perked up when she recognized the voice and she immediately began to panic.
"Son of a bitch killed me!" She spat and then she heard the familiar laughter.
"No, James is a bastard but he didn't kill you."
Yvette blinked again and saw her mother standing over her with a warm smile. "Mommy?" She asked and Darlene nodded.
"Long time no see huh?" She asked her.
"You were dead… they told me you had died."
"I didn't die baby, I was summoned and then entered a druid sleep… I wasn't woken up until Mercedes activated her powers." Darlene explained.
Yvette looked at her mother in shock before shaking her head. "Then… she's the undoing?"
"It's already begun, the hunters are back."
Yvette trembled when her mother informed her about the hunters. "I have to go get her, she won't survive against them."
Darlene let out a humorless laugh before looking over her shoulder. "She's managed to survive one her whole life."
James peered at the women talking, he was effectively restrained and completely powerless to them. He failed. His father set him out on this mission years ago and he had been on the cusps of completing it. He found where the vampires were hiding in plain sight, he'd figured out every path the Steelrigde wolves took to maintain their cover and he'd gotten so deep in with the witches they never suspected him.
Everything from Yvette thinking that Howard Evans hurt him to him pretending to not know as much as he did about witches. Witches were the enemy and it was his job to do whatever it took to get rid of them…
That is until Mercedes was born. He knew the minute he laid eyes on her that she would make him break but now things had changed. She was the one the prophecy spoke about and now he had to do what he needed, he had to stop them all from protecting her.
She had to claim darkness… it was the only way he could be okay with following his father's plan.
"Get rid of them all, no matter what."
Sooooo... A LOT happened... Sam's basically on ten now. Both of her grandmothers are back and being bad asses... she might on 10 herself...what's up with her daddy though? lol
