-Hello, Phoenix Wright speaking.
Hello Chief Nick, no time no see. — Ren said to one of his mentors
Ren, is that you? Oh God, it's been a long time. — Phoenix said in shock.
-Yeah, I know. How have you been? — Ren asked.
-Well, good. And what about you? — said Phoenix.
-Good too, despite the problems… — Ren replied, and then asked: — Is Chief Miles with you?
-Actually no. We were at a reunion of the Bar Association a few hours ago.
-I see. Well, let me add him to the call.
Ren picked up his phone and put a few inputs before he started a new call.
-Hello. Miles Edgeworth speaking.
-Hello, Chief Miles. Sorry for disturbing you at this hour. I know it's late in L.A.
-Ren, is that you? — Miles asked surprised as well. — I never expected you to call me.
-Neither did I, Chief Miles. Neither did I. By the way, I called Chief Nick. He's on the call.
-Hello Edgeworth. — Phoenix said.
-Wright. — Miles answered. — Well for you to call us, something must have happened.
-Yeah. You said that you weren't going to call us unless it was strictly necessary. — Phoenix commented.
-Yeah. I got into huge trouble, but before explaining everything, I need you two to meet some persons of interest.
Ren opened his smartphone camera and pointed towards himself, Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana.
-Chief Nick and Chief Miles, these are Ryuji Sakamoto, Ann Takamaki, and Morgana. Ann, Ryuji, Morgana, these are Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth, my mentors in law.
Ann and Ryuji became shocked to see both Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth as Morgana, purely confused, just stared at the two men.
-Who are these guys…? — Morgana asked confused.
-Are you serious? They are your mentors? — Ann asked, perplexed.
-Yes. Why? — Ren replied.
-Dude, for real!? Even I, who doesn't follow law stuff, knows those two. — Ryuji said perplexed — You're kiddin' me, right?
-No, I'm not kidding. And besides, it's a long story. — Ren said.
-My name is Phoenix Wright, nice to meet you guys.
- My name is Miles Edgeworth. It's a pleasure to meet you two.
-It's a pleasure… — Ann answered, still perplexed.
-Who are those guys? — Morgana asked again.
-The famous attorney's Phoenix Wright, international defense attorney and the Chief Prosecutor of Los Angeles Miles Edgeworth. Are you serious? You're really their apprentice? — Ryuji asked.
-WHAT!? — Morgana yelled surprised.
-Morgana, please calm down. Sorry about him, he's a curious cat.
-We can see that. That was quite the yelling. — Phoenix and Miles answered.
-For real!? Man, you really did a real shit outta here! I mean, those guys are a big deal, y'know?
-Language. — Miles scolded, closing his face.
-Please, don't use this type of language please. — Phoenix said embarrassed. — Although I admit we use those types of words sometimes…
-Sorry… But seriously, you actually know that is a real deal, right?
-I know, and that's why I avoided calling them. At least until now. — Ren replied.
-And for you to call us, something must have happened. — Miles said calmly. — After all, you said that you would call us just for an emergency.
-Yes. Actually, I need to talk with you two. A lot of things happened and I need some advice from you two.
-Go ahead. Tell us what happens. — Phoenix said.
Ren explained the whole situation to Phoenix and Miles. He gave them all the details of recent events, except about the Kamoshida Palace.
-So, all of this happened? — Phoenix asked to confirm.
-Yes. — Ren answered.
-All this shit wad that's happening, it's Kamoshida's fault! This asshole's planned everything. — Ryuji noticed Phoenix and Miles's reaction to his phase. — Sorry 'bout that. I'll go to tryin' control that.
-Ignoring Ryuji's language, he's right. Kamoshida has everything under his control. — Ann said.
-Or he thinks he does. — Ren said. — I already have a plan in mind and I need your help to check if I can perform it. I still need to do the investigation to prove our innocence, but to get legal evidence I need a warrant. There is no other way, unless I work with the police, or if I get one in the courthouse. I'm going to ask for the warrant expedition. Luckily, I can get everything I need on Monday.
-Do you know where to start the next step of your investigations? You won't be going through the process while just staying and investigating the school. — Miles said.
-I'll go to hospitals to get information and evidence. After getting what's necessary, I'm going to have to convince Kamoshida to do the trial. Once I get that, I'll have to get testimony. — Ren answered.
-Do you have an idea of the people who are probably going to be witnesses? — Phoenix asked.
-I'm sure Mr. Ushimaru is going to be called. I, Ann, and Mishima were present in his class when Shiho jumped.
-Be careful with him. He can testify against you. After all, this whole situation is a huge trap. — Phoenix warned.
-I know that and I've already got a plan. — Ren said.
-And what is your next step? — Miles asked.
-Get some help from the police. It's going to be difficult, but necessary, I have to get access to the records. If we have someone who can help with that and the rest. After all, the prosecutor can use my criminal record in court.
-As much I don't like the sound of that, you can count on Gumshoe's help.
-Gum… who? — Ryuji asked.
-Detective Dick Gumshoe. He's a friend of ours, and he helped us in some cases before. He was the main investigator of many of our cases too. — Miles answered.
-Actually, I heard he got a promotion to International Affairs. — Phoenix answered.
-I still can't believe he managed to get that promotion. — Miles commented in disbelief.
-Me neither. — Phoenix said, surprised.
-That makes three… — Ren said.
-And there another problem. The prosecutor. — Phoenix said.
-In this case, I have to let them "choose". There's no other way, and I need to gain their trust. — Said Ren.
-Yes. That is a smart move. — Miles said. — Once you have the day of the trial, you have to get everything before the trial date.
-That another point I've been worrying about. The date of the trial it's not the prosecutor's choice, but he can ask to rush the process to set the date. Even if I request the open of the trial, that just can be a choice of the judge who leads the case. Anyway, I already had to do some investigation as fast as I could. After all, in the worst case, the trial can be set for the next day. Knowing that I have to do my homework, and fast.
-Always one step ahead. — Miles commented with a smile. — It's good to see that you're doing everything well without us.
-Yes, you've proved you that can handle this alone. — Phoenix said.
-Yes, but I really want you two to help me here. At least it's not going to be as… oppressive… — Ren looked away.
-We know how you feel you are that you're in this fight alone, but you can do it. You already got everything. — Phoenix said.
-And no matter how the situation can get worse, we are always with you in spirit. You are our apprentice. You have the best of us. — Miles said.
-Because you learned the best of us. — Phoenix said, a little embarrassed.
-I know. After all, I had the best lawyers as to my mentors, and you two taught me everything I know. — Ren said. Phoenix and Miles just smiled after hearing Ren's comment.
-We have our doubts, but you're the one saying it— Phoenix said sheepishly. — By the way, what about your guardian? — Phoenix asked, keeping his serious frown.
-I have to tell him, sooner or later. I prefer sooner. To avoid a headache.
-But about the principal, what're you going to do? — Ryuji asked Ren.
-I thought about that as well. Principal Kobayakawa is going to have a surprise if he ever thinks to do something to stop me.
-Kobayakawa… — Miles said.
-Yes, I know. — Ren said. — About that…
-Yes, we know. There's something strange about your school transfer… — Phoenix said.
-So, you two also thought that it's not a coincidence. — Ren said.
-Yes. And after we receive that… — Miles said.
-I know. — Ren said, understanding Miles's phrase.
-But now you call us. Looks like you can't stay away from courts for much time. — Phoenix commented.
-Like you two. — Ren answered.
Phoenix and Miles laughed.
-Yes. Actually, we need to go back to Japan, but we planned to travel back in September. — Miles commented. — But like us, even if you want to stay away from trouble, the trouble is going straight to you.
-After the trials we are working on are finished, we're going to take the first flight to Tokyo to help you. — Phoenix said.
-Thanks. I appreciate it.
-For real!? — Ryuji asked.
-You two are going to come to Tokyo to help us here? — Ann asked.
-Yes. We need to help our apprentice. — Phoenix said. — And we have work in Tokyo after all.
-And we have to go back anyway. — Miles said calmly.
-Hell yeah! We goin' to have the help of the Ren's mentors! — Ryuji said excitedly.
-Not so fast. Depending on how our situation here in the U.S is going to proceed, we might not be able to help Ren in time. Maybe at the end of the month, we can get there. — Phoenix warned.
-We know that. But once you two arrive, we can talk about what happened these last couple of months. And we need to tell another thing, but not in a call.
-Why? — Phoenix asked.
-It's difficult to explain… And it's not the type of conversation to have in a phone call. — Ren said nervously.
-Okay. Once we arrive, we want to hear everything you have to say. — Miles said.
-Okay.
-Sorry if we can't help you now Ren. After all, we can't be here right now. — Phoenix said.
-You two have helped me, in fact. I was worried if I forgot anything. — Ren said. — But you two helped me with everything.
-We're glad to hear that. But you have done everything. — Miles said. — Now we need to go.
-We need to continue our investigations.
-Right. I'll call you two later. Again, thank you. — Ren said.
-You're welcome. — Said Phoenix. — Bye Ren.
-We'll see you soon. — Said Miles.
-See ya. — Ren said. — Ren finished the call. — Okay, time for the details.
-You goin' to tell to them? About we gonna steal Kamoshida's heart? — Ryuji asked.
-Yes.
-Are you sure about that Ren? — Morgana asked.
-I trust my mentors. They believed in me, even with the situation I was in in the past. They are going to understand. Besides, they are good at finding the truth. Better to have them as allies than as our enemies. — Ren replied.
-I trust in your word. — Morgana said.
-I understand that, and I'm going to take responsibility for my choices. — Ren said.
-Everyone agrees? — Morgana asked.
-Yes. — Both Ann and Ryuji answered.
-Very well. Now Ren, what's your plan?
-Okay. First, we need to get equipment and resources. At the same time, I can make an investigation when I get the warrant. Once we convince Kamoshida and Principal Kobayakawa to solve this in court, then we're going to infiltrate and get a safe route to the Treasure before the trial. After we establish the safe route, I'm going to prove our innocence in the Trial. After that, we steal Kamoshida's heart.
-It seems like a solid plan, but what if something happens in court?
-I actually thought about that. I'll have to do my best, study, and investigate everything. — Ren said clenching his fists.
-If we win the trial, we can make Kamoshida even more nervous, after all, he's going to be afraid of the situation he has gotten into. This is going to affect him and his Palace, making him try his best to protect his Treasure, and this can be used to our advantage.
-So, that's a win-win case. — Ryuji smiled. — That's gonna be a piece of cake.
-Not so fast. We need to get a safe route first, Ryuji. — Ann said calmly.
-Lady Ann is right. We need to get stronger and take that route as fast as we can. — Morgana looked to Ren. — Can you do the investigation in time?
-I can. — Ren answered. — That's the plan. Does everyone agree? — Both Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana nodded in affirmative. — Okay. Then it's settled. Oh, before I forget, Ryuji, if you can please ask your mother for a favor? I need her permission.
-For what?
-I'm probably going to need your medical charts. We never know what could happen in court.
-M'kay. I'll talk with her.
-Okay. With that, we can finish this reunion.
-Now then, Ren and I have some business in Yongen, so let's head off for today! — Morgana said.
-Uh… what business…?
-That thing, remember? I won't be able to get close enough by myself!
-Ah, I remember! The medicine. — Ren said. — Okay… Now, we're going. For now, this is it. Bye.
-Bye.
They went out the rooftop and Morgana stared at Ren. After they exited the school, Morgana asked:
-Are you sure you can do it?
-I'm sure. And don't worry, I already have a plan in mind.
-What are we going to need to do?
-Well, just a good reason for them to accept my condition. Don't worry, I will take care of it.

-Hey, do you know where we're going, right?
-Right, Takemi Clinic. You're expecting her to help us, right?
-Right. If she's the kind of doctor who gets sketchy rumors like that, maybe she'll help us out.
-I highly doubt she's that type of doctor. There's something off.
-You're just saying that because you like her? — Morgana provoked.
-Morgana… — Ren warned.
-We need to go to her to get the medicine anyway. So please ignore it. Now, let's get this medicine.
-I was planning to go there after all.
-I see. All right, bring me to her Romeo.
-Said the one who can't stand cool with your Juliet.
Morgana blushed.
-What!?
Ren snickered, then he felt a sudden pain in his head.
-Ugh!
-Are you alright?
-Yes… there's another reason I'm going to her clinic… I've been getting some headache these days…
-What…!? Why do you—
-Because I thought it was nothing. I don't want to be more of a bother to Sojiro. Besides, I can handle it. I felt like that in my training and my first trial, months ago. It's nothing.
-If you say so…
-Morgana. Keep this a secret, okay? We don't want to worry anyone.
-Okay…
Ren walked around the street. Taking a turn, he went into the alley the clinic was located. Seeing the sign "Takemi Medical Clinic" written in the big sign on the side of the entrance, Ren confirmed the location.
-Well, we here are. Takemi Medical Clinic.
-This is that clinic the chief mentioned. Now, how can we get her to give us some medicine?
-Well, we'll have to make something up. Despite my headache, I doubt she's going to sell us medicine without saying something about it. — He said while massaging his temples.
-…Well, I guess that's the only choice we have. We'll just have to go for it. All right, let's step inside.
—
Takemi Medical Clinic.
After School.
—
Ren went inside the Takemi Medical Clinic and to his surprise, the clinic looked like a regular clinic.
"It's small… I thought the clinic was at least a little bigger than this…" He thought looking around. He felt another point of pain in his head. "Dammit, my head! I should have this checked now."
Seeing Tae sitting on the other side of the counter, he simply stood in front of her and lightly knocked the glass on his left.
-Good afternoon. — He said.
-Good afternoon… Is this your first visit? — The doctor asked.
-Yes.
-Hm? I feel like I've seen you somewhere before…
-We meet at Leblanc.
-Hmmm… Well, whatever… So, what are you here for today?
-I've been feeling some headaches lately… and my body feels lethargic.
Tae scanned him for a moment, analyzing his condition.
-…Fine. Please head to the examination room… — She looked at his bag and saw Morgana's head. — As for your cat, I'm going to allow him to stay. However, if he doesn't stay quiet, next time it'll be better for him to stay outside. This is a clinic after all.
Ren shook his head and followed her orders, he went inside the place and noticed the examination room looked normal as well, although it was a small space. Sitting on the bed, he saw her enter the place and she started to analyze him again.
-Please tell me more details about your symptoms.
Ren talked with the languid doctor about his symptoms, as she performed some tests on him.
-You have some bruises over your body. — She said while checking his torso.
-I fell from the school stairs. Luckily, I didn't get that hurt. — Ren answered, putting on his shirt.
-I see… And about your headaches… How long have you been feeling them?
-Around four, five days. I've felt them before, a few months ago, during my training.
-What training?
-Legal training.
-What are you? An attorney?
-Yes. I'm a defense attorney at law. Although I haven't been in the courts lately…
-I see… Not that I care though… In a case like yours, it's usually just due to stress. I'm going to prescribe some pain relievers, okay? — She said, taking notes on her clipboard, then she stood up and started to check her drawers. — …Actually, I still need to restock those… — She closed the drawers and took back her clipboard. — So, let's go with sleeping pills instead. Sleep is the best medicine, anyway.
-Okay.
-Which type of pill do you want, a sweet-tasting one or a bitter one?
-Whichever you want, doctor. — Ren answered.
-How about a stinky one then?
-Huh!?
Tae snickered.
-Just kidding. There's no such pill. — She inclined to him, with a serious look. — All right, why don't we stop beating around the bush…
-What do you mean, doctor?
-You're not sick at all, are you? — Tae asked, analyzing him. — I'm not dumb as I look, you know.
Ren glanced at her, avoiding being lost in his thoughts, and just nodded in affirmation.
-Sorry about that, doctor Takemi. It wasn't my intention to insult your intelligence, neither insult your person. But…
-…You're here because you heard the rumors about me, huh? I'm guessing that at least.
-That's true, although I really doubt that rumors are true. And my guess is you already have this same conversation almost every single day, right?
-Who's to say? But as a result, all I get are patients with ulterior motives now.
-I see… Not the friendly type of patients, right?
-Right… I guess high school kids have it tough nowadays too, huh? — She asked, then she pulled a paper from her drawer. — Well, fine. I'll prescribe you some medication.
-Huh? You are? Why? — Ren asked confused.
-I will prescribe you some medication. But the only medication that will help you to recover your health. Besides, I guess it's fine. You seem pretty earnest, and you don't look like you'll be any trouble.
-O-Oh, I see… Well, is that normal practice? — Ren asked.
-This is my private practice. All the medicine I prescribe is original. And yes, I have a license to make my own formulas. You've likely seen them being sold at various hospitals.
"Interesting… Maybe I've seen her medicine before…maybe even used it…"
-It's your responsibility to take care of yourself. So, if that's okay with you, stop by anytime.
-That'll really help. Thank you for your help.
-Great. It's nice that you're so quick on the uptake… Saves me the hassle.
-If you say so… But thank you anyway.
She stared at her own foot, thoughtful.
-You're a pretty weird kid, you know? I wonder what you're going to use the medicine for…
Ren looked away, avoiding looking back at her.
-Well, as long as you don't cause me any trouble, it's not my problem…
-You don't need to worry about that. After all, is my own responsibility after all.
Tae stared at Ren for a moment, analyzing him.
-You're a weird kid…
-You're a shady punk doctor and I don't throw that in your face. — Ren commented. Tae laughed.
-Fair enough weirdo.
Ren took from her the paper she was holding.
-This is all I've got right now…
Looking at the selection Ren has at his disposal; he made his order.
-I want four Recov-R 50mg and two Alert Capsules and two Revivadrin.
-The total is 8400 yen.
Ren gives the money to Tae. She was surprised when he paid her.
-You got a lot of money for a kid. — She commented while picking the medication. — Here.
Ren took the package with the medication.
-Thank you for your service. Oh, before I forget, I owe you a report.
-Hm?
-You asked me to test one of your medicines.
-Hm. Okay… Then good luck with that.
-Very well.
-Take care.
Ren exited the examination room and saw a man waiting in the waiting room.
-Hello.
-Hello. Take your time. — Said Ren.
The man entered the room and Ren saw Morgana's head out of his bag.
-So, we got the medicine. — Morgana said in a low voice. Ren started to go to the exit.
-Yes. Now we need to go home and…
-…What's the reason for your visit? — Tae asked. — Do you have a cold? Stomachache? Athlete's foot? Whatever it is, you'll need to take a number…
-…Enough of this!
Ren stopped walking before the door. Silently, he closed the door and attempted to hear the conversation.
-You're the only one who could have developed that type of medicine. — The man yelled.
-I'm afraid I have no idea what you're talking about…
Ren walked to the door of the examination room and he put his head close to the examination room door, hiding to avoid being caught.
-Don't play dumb with me. Rumor has it, it's a drug so potent it can give a person unlimited power.
-Really? That news to me.
-Developing experimental drugs, medicine, and herbal remedies violates all health regulations. Are you attempting to create a super-stimulant? A drug like that will only become a social issue.
-You're really persistent, you know that? I'm just a quack…
-The police may not be taking action, but I imagine the media will soon pick up on it. You intend to ruin my reputation again, huh? You're a disgrace to the medical community.
-…Tsk!
-What's with the look? That was your mistake, was it not? I won't be responsible for your criminal actions. Dispose of that "medicine" immediately and resign. The name "Tae Takemi" will never—
Suddenly someone entered the clinic.
-Doctor?
-Hey, someone's there!? — Asked the man in the exam room.
Ren made a signal with his hand of silence to the other person and exited the clinic as fast as he could. Once outside, he went to another street.
-Geez, they almost caught us. — Morgana said.
-Yes… But we managed to escape…
-Sounded like they were talking about something dangerous… Could that woman be hiding some extra strong medicine…?
-No doubt about that, but I doubt that medicine can give a person unlimited power. But she can make strong medicine, indeed. We could use that. — Ren said.
-I agree. If it's that strong, it might come in handy at the Palace.
-Yes. But we've got enough for now, and I need to give her a report. We'll come back when that man isn't around.
-Be sure she doesn't know about us. We shouldn't involve people who have nothing to do with this. Keep the Phantom Thieves a secret, ok?
-I have no intention to involve anyone. Don't worry about that.
-Anyway, great work! That went really well!
-Thanks, but we haven't finished yet.
Ren received a message from Ryuji.
So you know that store I mentioned, with the model gun. It's in Shibuya. I can go with you if you want.
Sounds good. We'll meet tomorrow. — Ren answered.
Sweet. We'll meet tomorrow. Welp, let's figure out where we'll meet. You at least know how to get to Shibuya Station, yeah? We'll meet there.
Okay, that's better. We'll meet there.
Hey, I can't make it. — Ann messaged — Can I trust you guys to check the place out for me.
You can't come? — Ryuji asked.
Not tomorrow. I made plans to go see Shiho in the hospital.
Ah, gotcha.
Ann, wait. — Ren messaged.
What is it? — Ann asked.
Can you convince Shiho's mother to talk with me? — Ren asked. — Her help will be crucial to our case.
Are you sure of that? — She asked.
As much as I hate to disturb her in that situation, we don't have much choice. We'll need everything in order to take Kamoshida down, and her help will be necessary.
Okay, I will talk to her tomorrow. I can't confirm anything though.
That'll be enough.
Don't worry Ann, we got this, and we'll win. — Ryuji messaged.
Thanks. — Ann messaged.
Well, see ya in Shibuya, Ren! I'll be in front of the station! — Ryuji messaged.
Okay. BTW, can you get permission from your mother?
Yes, I got it. — Ryuji asked.
Good. I need to get access to your medical records soon as possible. — Ren explained.
I see. I'll give it to you tomorrow.
Thanks. See you tomorrow.
Ren put his phone back in his pocket and started to walk back to Leblanc.
-We might be able to get our hands on some decent stuff if this store really has model guns.
-Yes. But I need the warrant soon as possible too. — Ren received another message. He picked his phone and saw the message. — Speaking of the devil, we got it. One less thing to worry about. Luckily, I got the number of a friend of Chief Miles. But still, I need to explain to him my situation.
-Well, we can leave that for Monday. Now, let's go home!
-Yes, I need to clean the place, remember?
-Not today. We'll do that another day.
-Okay, if you say so…
—
Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
Ren, as he arrived, he saw Sojiro waiting for him with a furious look on his face. He noticed that Sojiro was holding something.
-Something wrong?
-Well, I was cleaning the attic, when something called my attention. — He lifted up a folder, which Ren recognized immediately. — I found this on the desk next to the stairs. Care to explain what this is?
-That's mine. It's a file.
-Yes, I know that. The curious thing is, you were signed as the lead attorney as the role of the defense. — Sojiro threw the file on the bench. — What are you hiding from me. You better tell me already, before…
-Before you what? Expel me from the attic? Very clever of you.
-Don't start it. You don't know who you're messing into.
-Neither you. I suggest you behave yourself before we go into the ways in fact.
Sojiro scratched his head and he looked back at Ren.
-I'm your guardian, and I suggest you behave yourself. Unlike you though, your life is in my hands.
-Nice, first that guy, now you…
-What do you mean by that?
-Nothing important now. Besides, what's the problem with that?
-When I decided to take care of you, I was clear with only one thing: Be a problem and I kick you out.
-And that defines me as a problem? Seriously, I never expected that'll be such an issue just because of a case file.
-Do you know the seriousness of this?
-Of course, I know. Why do you think I kept that hidden?
-What? Did you intend to hide this from me!?
-Of course, I hid that from you. I'm on probation, or did you forget?
-You hid this from me? You should at least tell me why.
-I can't, okay? In my actual situation, I can't have the privilege to be an attorney, at least until now.
-Something happened?
-Yes. Something serious.
-And you going to solve this in court?
-Of course.
-You know what? I'm calling the social service, right now.
-No, you won't.
-Why not?
-You're jumping to conclusions and you're not listening to me.
-And why should I? You're a criminal after all.
Ren furiously slammed the desk close to him with both hands.
-Look, I became a damn criminal because I defended a woman from a drunken bastard who had the whole police in his pocket to use as he wanted to. I went to jail because of the same woman who sold me because she doesn't have any chance. All because of that bastard who was behind all of this. Do you think that was just some fun for me? To stay away from my family, my hometown, my life? To stay with a stranger, living at his shop just because I'm a damn criminal? Let me tell you something: I know how the world works, but that doesn't mean I'm going to accept it as it is. If I can change, I'm going to change, whether you like it or not. Are you that blind to see I had my reasons to hide that? — Ren sighed, calmer after his outburst. — You know what? I don't care.
-You…
-Yeah, I don't care. Is nothing like that'll change anything. You can call the social service if you want to. I'll be waiting upstairs.
Ren went upstairs and Morgana stared at him.
-Are you serious? — He whispered to the teenager.
-Yes, I am. Why? — Ren answered.
-You do know he's going to send you to jail, right?
-And what can I do? It's up to him after all. The only thing I can count on is if he changes his mind.
-Well… When you say that…
Ren sighed and sat on his bed.
-Why can't things be easier…?
After several minutes, Sojiro went upstairs and looked at Ren.
-Hey.
-Hi.
A brief moment of silence reigned.
-Well, I haven't called the social service. But I will call depending on the situation…
-So…?
-I want you to be earnest. Are you an attorney or not? And if yes, do you have proof?
Ren stared at him and just grabbed his bag on the desk, taking the black velvet box inside. He gave the box to Sojiro.
-Here. The proof of me being a lawyer.
Sojiro opened the box and he saw the attorney badge inside.
-Wow…
Sojiro went towards the sofa and sat on it.
-I thought you were lying… Guess I was mistaken…
-Yeah… Sorry about that… and sorry about my outburst as well…
-No worries… Guess I deserved it after all…
-No… I was wrong.
-For what? Keeping this a secret? As far I saw and know, you have a good reason to keep this quiet. Look, I don't wanna know the entire reason behind it, but if you're going to act, I need to advise you: If there's anything you're getting involved in, I should know now. Otherwise, I can't help you.
Ren shook his head in affirmation and stared at Sojiro.
-Before I explain my situation, I need to at least say why I kept this hidden, at least explain that without saying everything. Let's just say, because of my situation, I needed to stay away until my probation was lifted. However, due to my actual situation, I need to come back.
-Okay, if you say so… Well, what's the situation you got into?
Ren explained the whole situation to Sojiro until he finished. After a minute in silence, he just nodded his head in negative.
-To think I told you to stay away from trouble…
-Well, in my defense I was trying to avoid it…
-You know that's a poor claim, right?
-I know, but it's true. Or do you think I get into trouble just for fun?
-It seems like it.
"Why I'm not surprised…" Ren thought.
-But, seeing the whole situation, it seems odd that no one dares to defy him. I heard some sketchy rumors before, but I never thought it was true…
-It's not only true, he's also taking advantage of his and my situation to get out of the situation without any suspicions directed to him. He's going to use me, Sakamoto, and Mishima as scapegoats to get away with it.
-But you're not going to let him go that easily.
-No. And I don't expect you to understand.
-I quite understand, in fact. No one deserves to be abused like that. — Sojiro sighed and closed his eyes. — So, if I understand this situation, you're plannin' to solve this in court, right?
-Right.
-And you have a plan for that?
-Yes I do.
-So, if that's the case, I hope you've prepared for everything. And I especially hope you're plannin' to win, because if you lose…
-I know. If I lose, I'm going to be screwed.
-Exactly. As you know, legal cases aren't a joke. I hope you're ready to face the consequences.
-I know, and I'm ready to face them.
-Very well, if you say so… I'm not going to stop you. It's your own business, after all.
-Yeah, I know. Sorry for that.
-You don't need to be sorry for that. Honestly, though, this type of thing happens all the time…
-And that's why I became a defense attorney. To stop those types of injustices, even if I know I can't do it all the time.
-Glad you have some sense inside your head. So, what are you going to do now?
-Monday I'm going to take some time to prepare myself for the trial. If everything goes according to plan, Tuesday should be the day of the lawsuit.
-Okay, if you say… Well, I'll be going now. I'll close the shop.
-Okay.
-And… Do your best to not get in jail.
-Okay. I'll do that.
-Very well. Later.
-Later.
Sojiro exited Leblanc, and Ren sat relieved.
-Phew, one less problem.
-You were waiting for that, right? — Morgana asked.
-Honestly, no. I was expecting him to call the social services, and for the situation to go badly.
-What!? You're expecting the worst!?
-Of course. Morgana, always expect the worst. That's one of the lessons I learned in court.
-If you say so…
-Well, enough of that. Everything is going according to the plan, right?
-Right! It's going smoothly so far. Once we're prepared, let's take on the Palace. That's where the real fun begins, got it?
-Got it! Although the fun started for me since Kamoshida expelled us.
-So, you've been planning to come back since the beginning?
-No. Like I said, I was avoiding that situation as much as I could. But seeing how things went, I should have come back a long time ago.
-Yeah… Well, time to go to bed. You need to meet Ryuji tomorrow, so you better not oversleep!
-I know that. — Ren said, changing to his pajamas. — Besides, we need to do a few things tomorrow.
-What do you mean?
-You'll see… Good night, Mona.
-Good night.
—
April, 17. Sunday.
Shibuya District. Shibuya Station.
Daytime.
—
-Looks like you made it! — Ryuji greeted excitedly
-Of course, I did it. Or did you think I couldn't find this place?
-'Course I know.
-Okay, where's the shop?
-The shop's on Central Street, so we gotta go through the Crossing to get there!
-The Crossing?
-That's what we call the Shibuya Crossing. It's this huge intersection with people crossin' the street from every direction.
-Oh, I see… I went there once when I was going to Yongen.
-That makes everythin' easier. Once we get past that, we're pretty much at Central Street. Alright, let's get goin'!
-Let's.
Ren and Ryuji started going their way towards Central Street when they heard someone making a speech.
-Everyone wakes up! This country is twisted! While the Japanese society may appear to be thriving, many young people have not been as blessed as their elders. They have no jobs, no savings, no financial security whatsoever… These young people should be tackling their futures head-on, but instead, they're too busy merely trying to survive.
-Eh, people give speeches all the time. Plus, politics are pretty boring, anyway. — Ryuji commented.
-But without politics, we don't have a society. — Ren answered.
-True, but that's still boring though…
-This politician's actually saying some decent things, but not many people are stopping to listen… — Morgana commented.
-His talk it's coherent and convincing. It's strange there are not so many people here. — Ren commented. — He looks different from me. If I can at least learn how to give speeches like his. Well, we need to go back to our objective. Ryuji, lead the way.
-Got it.
After going through the Crossing, they finally arrived at Central Street. Once there, Ryuji went away towards the shop. Ren followed him.
-Hey, it's this way!
-Okay.
After Going into an alley, Ryuji stopped close to the shop entrance. Ren saw the neon sign, written in English the word "Untouchable".
-Wow…
-This is it. Pretty legit, huh?
-Kind of…
-Kind of…? Yeah, it's actually scary… To be honest, it'd be a bit scary to go in alone…
-Afraid Ryuji… — Morgana provoked.
-Said the one who's scared. Anyways, it was here I brought that model gun.
-I see… Well, let's get inside.
-Right! Let's check what's inside. — Ryuji went towards the door and stopped before entering. — Oh yeah, before we head in… you know anything about guns and shit?
-Yes, I do Why?
-Nothin'. If not, we can just ask the guy behind the counter if we can't figure out what we want. C'mon, let's get inside.
-Let's.
Both of them entered the shop and Ren saw a lot of airsoft guns and military-like equipment inside. However, it was the owner of the shop who called his attention. His attire made him look like he was a sketchy guy, who was involved or related with gangs, or with shady business. His cap holding auricular protection, made him sound like a gun specialist. Going towards him, he stood in front of him, waiting for him to look at him.
-Hm… Do you know what you want? — He asked, in a rude manner.
-Well yes. I want guns. Do you have some recommendations?
-…You lookin' for recommendations?
-Yes.
-…I dunno. Just buy whatever looks interestin' to you.
-Ryuji…
-Ugh, some customer service…
The manager of the shop quickly glanced at Ryuji, then he snapped his attention back to his magazine.
-Fine. Whaddya want? An automatic? A revolver?
-Uh, automatic…? — Ryuji asked confused. — Dude, were you talkin' bout cars now?
The manager glanced towards Ryuji, who just stepped aside nervously, but he looked back at his magazine.
-Listen, this here's an enthusiast shop. My regulars will be mad if I let a casual, like you, hang around.
-I'm not a freakin' casual! I brought shit from here like, last week.
-Huh… — The manager glanced at Ryuji and ignored him once again. — Can't remember you.
-You bastard…
-That's what you get for acting casual. — Ren commented.
-Huh…? — Ryuji asked, confused.
-An automatic is a gun that fires sequentially when you pull and hold the trigger. — Ren explained.
-Oh…
-Looks like you understand somethin' about guns. So, you lookin' for somethin'? — Asked the manager.
-Well… As I said, we need guns. In preference, something that looks realistic.
-Oh? You a collector? Heh, you're way more interestin' than the blondie over there.
-Oh shut it!
-He's just confused. After all, most people don't know what an automatic gun is. Semi-automatic and revolvers are more known by the people.
-True… you shoulda said before you 're enthusiasts. I'm always up for helpin' fresh faces. — He said, putting his magazine on the counter. — Some precautions first though. Don't go-'round pointing 'em at other people. Keep 'em in a bag or somethin' if you're outside. Oh, and don't let the fuzz catch wind of you having 'em. I don't need them comin' around here.
-Don't worry, we know that. We're not that dumb.
-You damn well better be. Now, if you look closely, you'll be able to tell that these are models. Real guns feel… different.
-I know. I had the opportunity to hold a real gun before.
-Really? You sure are an interestin' one… maybe someday I'll show you the real good stuff though—if you got the guts for it, of course.
-Yeah, maybe one day…
-But for now, you get the beginner selection. Just sit tight, I'll bring 'em out.
-Okay.
The manager went to the back of the store and Ryuji looked at Ren excitedly.
-…We did it, dude! We totally gotta go for some fancy shit, right? I want 'em to shine.
-Yeah. But we need to be careful. We can't underestimate the dangers of the Palace.
-Yeah… Oh, by the way… Have you really held a real gun before? — Ryuji asked.
-Yes. During my training, I had to learn about possible murder weapons and about self-defense. I had the chance to even fire a few. — Ren explained.
-Oh… Hey, here. — Ryuji said as he handed Ren cash
-What's this for?
-It's the cash for my gun. Pick me out something good!
-Okay, I will. "Okay, I have 52,226 yens. That should be enough to buy everything we need."
-Here we are. Whaddya want?
Ren looked at the selection carefully.
-I want these ones. The Kukri, the Hell Slugger, the Falchion, and the Fundo-Kusari.
The manager looked and just nodded.
-Everything cost 14,400.00 yens.
-What!? — Ryuji yelled surprised.
-That's the price.
-Okay, I'll buy it. — Ren said, paying for the items and he put them inside the bag, except for the Kukri.
-Somethin' else?
-No. That's all. — He said, evaluating the knife.
-Okay. Oh yeah. There's somethin' you should know. I don't buy off any model's guns from other people, so keep that in mind.
-Okay. Can you tell us the reason?
-I don't wanna deal with any problems buyin' somethin' that's already been modified. And that's all I gotta say.
-Okay.
The manager looked at Ren after he analyzed the model weapon.
-Looks like you wanna buy somethin' else.
Ren smiled.
-You're right.
-Looks like you ain't no mere customer. Well, go ahead.
-Hmmm… — Ren looked at the selection again. — All the basic standard fire guns you have.
-All costs 15,200.00 yens.
-Also, I want to sell these models. They weren't being modified.
-Hm… I can buy them all for 1,960 yens.
-Fair enough. Well, that's all.
-Okay. Come again.
-Well, let's go Ryuji. We got all that we needed.
-Really? Okay. Anyways, I'll have you do the choosin' from now on. Get me the strongest lookin' one.
-Okay. — Ren sighed while exiting the shop. — Almost half of my money went into weapons.
-How much we still got? — Ryuji asked.
-26,586 yens. We still need to buy some items, but whatever.
-If you say so… Oh, by the way, here. The permission you asked for.
Ryuji gave Ren the document.
-Thank you. I need that as well. Tell your mother to thank you for me later.
-You're welcome man!
Ren checked the time on his phone.
-Okay, I'll see you tomorrow.
-See you tomorrow.
Ren picks up his phone and checks his navigation app.
-Now, let's go, Morgana, we need to start our investigation.
—
Aoyama-Itchome District.
Hokuto Aoyama Hospital
2:20 PM, After Noon
—
Ren arrived at the Hokuto Aoyama Hospital after an hour. Going straight to the reception area, he waited for the attendant on the other side to finish her job.
-Hello, welcome to the Hokuto Aoyama Hospital. What can I do for you? — Asked the nurse.
-Hello. Can you actually do me a favor? I need access to some information. More specifically the medical charts of a certain patient. — Ren explained.
-Okay, why do you need that chart?
-I need to get a copy of a medical chart from this specific patient. All his medical charts from this hospital.
-I can do that, but I need his name and his permission. In the case of him being a minor, I need permission from his guardians. — Said the nurse.
-The patient's name is Ryuji Sakamoto.
The nurse checked Ryuji's name in the hospital system.
-I found him, but he is a minor. In this case, I need the permission of his parents.
-I have it.
Ren showed Ryuji's mom permission. The nurse checked the documents and was surprised.
-How do you have this?
-I'm a lawyer. I'm in the middle of an investigation.
-Sorry, but you look too young. How old are you?
-Seventeen. Is there a problem?
-No, but this is legit?
-Yes, it's legit. You can check if necessary.
The nurse called someone on the phone. One lawyer from the juridical staff and one doctor came and both the lawyer, the doctor and the nurse had a long conversation and then they checked the documents. After a few minutes, the lawyer took his phone and made a call. He asked a few things and he heard the person on the other side of the call. Ending the call, he talked with the doctor. The lawyer walked away and the doctor walked to Ren.
-Hello Mr. Amamiya, sorry for the inconvenience. I'm a doctor who works here in this hospital. I checked the permission you have with one of our lawyers. You can have a medical chart copy from the patient.
-Hello. Thank you for your time and sorry for the inconvenience, but I understand the protocol.
-Thanks for your consideration. — Said the doctor. — Can the hospital at least know the reasons for you to ask for Sakamoto's medical chart?
-I want to open a trial to defend him and I need these medical charts as evidence.
-I see. Do you need anything else? — Asked the doctor
-Actually, no. I just need these charts. Can you give back my warrant, please?
The doctor gives back to Ren his permission.
-It's going to take a while to get the copy. Do you mind waiting for a moment?
-No, I don't mind. Thank you for your time.
-You're welcome. Stay here, while I come back with Sakamoto's chart copy.
The medic went to the hospital records. Ren took his phone and sent a message to Ann.
Ren sits next to the reception and waits for the doctor to bring him Ryuji's Chart. In the meantime, Ren was researching on the internet about Kamoshida. During his investigation, he found more about his career and Shujin's past.
"Strange, how can an Olympic athlete with a lot of potentials and a successful career become a person like this…?" Ren looked at reports about Kamoshida's comportment. "In this official report, he acted like a nice guy. Honestly, this isn't much… I need to find out more about him and fast!"
After twenty minutes, the doctor came back, walking in Ren's direction.
-Mr. Amamiya, here are Sakamoto's charts. — The doctor gave Ren the medical charts.
-Thanks.
-Now I'll be going now if you excuse me.
-Okay. Thank you once again. Bye.
-Bye.
Ren stood up from his seat and he left the hospital after that he went back home.
—
Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
Ren arrived at the Leblanc, and he saw regular drinking his coffee.
-Boss, did you hear? Apparently, that subway driver from the accident was acting really odd during his testimony hearing.
-Are you talking about that psychotic whatever thing people are going on about?
-Yeah, I heard it completely alters your personality. The news is saying the driver couldn't even speak when they tried asking him questions.
-Only an idiot believes a preposterous story like that. And I'm sorry, but we're closing soon.
The client grunted.
-How rude. This must be why you don't get many customers. This must be why you don't get many customers. Your coffee is actually not half bad. The beans must be lamenting the sorry state of this store…
-Thanks for stopping by. Please come again. — Sojiro said annoyed.
The haughty man grunted.
-I'm only trying to help you to fix your business. Thanks for the coffee, at least.
The client paid and exited the café. Ren looked to Sojiro for a while, surprised.
"No wonder he accepted the money to take care of me…" Ren thought.
-Sheesh… What a pain…
-That was rough…
-Oh… What do you want? — Sojiro asked, irritated. — If you're bored, go wash some dishes or something.
-That's the way you treat your clients? How're you still open? — Ren asked.
-That doesn't concern you. — Sojiro answered with a bit of hostility.
-Alright. But you okay with that? I mean, I don't want to get bad in your business.
-It's all good as long as the shop doesn't fail. I'm not gonna go wearing a fake smile.
-Is that a motto of yours?
-No, it's nothing like that. And if it fails, maybe I'll end up living out on the streets…
-You sound careless, talking like that…
-True, but as long as I'm here, the world leaves me be. No annoyances or troublesome people to deal with. It's like my own personal hideaway.
-I see… That is a good way to see things.
-I'd be kinda screwed if I lost it, but I guess you would be too. So, you better at least try and be useful around here.
-Okay, I'll try being useful. And please try to not sink your business. Unlike you, I really care to have a place to stay.
Sojiro smiled.
-Anyway, I'm leaving now. Try to not cause any more trouble. You're in too many already.
-Okay. See you tomorrow.
Sojiro left Leblanc and Ren went upstairs to the attic. Putting his bag next to the stairs, he went towards his luggage, starting to look for something. Morgana got out of the bag.
-What're you looking at?
-My outfit. I'm going to need it.
-I see…
Ren heard his phone ringing, and he saw a message notification from Ann.
So, I went to see Shiho in the hospital…
How's her condition? — Ren typed.
Her condition is stable. They don't know when she'll regain consciousness though. — Ann replied.
I'm sure she'll recover. Just you wait.
Yeah. She'll get better, I know it. I just need to believe in her. But… I'll never forgive Kamoshida. He's going to pay for what he did, no matter what.
Not only in his Palace, but I'm also going to take him down in the trial too. I'm going to prove his guilt!
Yes, we are going to prove his guilt. We're counting on you as well. We're going to bring Kamoshida to justice!
Yes.
Ann, sorry for asking, but can you tell me the hospital where Shiho is?
Hokuto Aoyama Hospital. I was with her mother today.
This is lucky. Ryuji was hospitalized there.
During his "assault" case with Kamoshida, right?
Right. By the way, did you convince Shiho's mother to talk to me? I need all the help I can get.
I'm not sure if I could convince her… She said she'll think about it.
Okay, I'll be waiting. Thank you once again.
You're welcome.
Ren ended the conversation and he put his phone on the desk.
-We're just about ready to go to the Palace. — Morgana said — We just need to assemble some infiltration tools.
-Okay, time to clean that workbench. — Ren said, looking to the workbench in the corner.
Ren takes the plastic off the workbench and takes all the books and other objects on the bench. After that, he cleaned off the dust and tools as well. After a half-hour, Ren finished cleaning the workbench.
-Great, now you can make things whenever you want!
-Which is great. Okay, now teach me.
Ren sat down on the work desk, looking at the tools.
-Okay, time for the first lesson, Morgana. So, what am I going to learn today?
-Let's start with a simple one: A lockpick. This time I'll provide the materials.
Morgana gave Ren some materials.
-How did you get this? — Ren asked, surprised.
-Focus on the lesson. — Morgana warned.
-Okay, now explain to me how to make a lockpick.
-I'll show you how to make it with these blueprints I have. — Morgana showed Ren a few blueprints.
"I don't want to imagine how he carries that…" Ren thought.
-I'm not sure if I can do that right…
-Don't think too hard about it. You'll get the hang of it.
Ren saw the lockpick blueprint and saw the necessary materials to craft it.
-I can only make one… Better to not mess with this one.
-Hey, everyone starts off a little clumsy. Didn't you have problems in your first trial?
-Yes, don't make me remember that… — Ren said, remembering Larry and Winston.
-Don't be sad if it doesn't go well at first, ok? Just take it easy.
Ren started to make the lockpick, focusing on the construction of the tool. Morgana was licking himself in the meantime. After a few minutes, Ren finished.
-I'm finished. — Ren showed the lockpick to Morgana. — So, I did it correctly, right?
-You did great! You were able to do a good job on your first try. — Morgana commented. — We should be able to do this.
Ren celebrated, proud of his work.
"I feel my proficiency has improved. At this rate, I can do the tools easier and quicker."
-When you make infiltration tools, your proficiency is going to improve and you will be able to make more complex tools when you have the necessary proficiency for that. You can get the materials by defeating the Shadows. — Morgana explained.
-I can find materials in shops too. There's a junk shop near here. This is going to be useful depending on our situation.
-We should be ready now, I guess.
-With only this? — Ren asked, standing up, picking the evidence he got and keeping on the workbench.
-I know this is all we get, but we will be able to deal with the Palace with those items. We should be ready now. We're heading into the Palace tomorrow. Are you sure you can convince Shiho's mom to help us?
-I have to. But tomorrow I have to prepare everything to corner Kamoshida. Without this, make the trial happen it's going to be impossible. — Ren said calmly. — But let's not worry about this. After all, he doesn't look as smart as he thinks.
Morgana laughed.
-Yeah, I have to agree with that, but you better don't underestimate him.
-I can't underestimate him, after all, he managed to keep his scheme going for all this time. We need to be ready for anything. — Ren yawned. — Let's sleep, tomorrow is going to be a long day.
-Agreed. Tomorrow we need to get ready for Tuesday.
-True. Good night Mona.
—
April, 18. Monday.
Aoyama-Itchome District. Shujin Academy.
Main Entrance.
Early Morning.
—
Ren arrived at the school and to his surprise Kamoshida was in front of the entrance, greeting the students.
-Good morning. C'mon, hurry up and get to class! — He said happy, but after noticing Ren, he closed his face. — Good morning.
Ren decided to ignore him and walked to the school. Kamoshida grabbed Ren's shoulder, stopping him.
-…That admirable behavior won't do you any good once you're expelled.
Ren glanced at him.
-I don't need to be polite and answer anyone if I want, and that also includes you.
Kamoshida stared at Ren for a moment.
-You got a lot of nerve to answer me in that way. Maybe that's the reason you have a criminal record.
Ren avoided staring at Kamoshida and sighed tiredly.
-Honestly… You're going to regret what you did. Mark my words…
Ren took Kamoshida's hand off his shoulder and walked away, heading to his classroom. Kawakami entered after the first bell and she administered her class normally.
-…Well, that wraps up the homeroom period. — She said, finishing her class. — Amamiya-kun. A word with you please?
-Of course, Kawakami-sensei.
Ren lifted himself from his seat and followed Kawakami towards the corridors of the third floor in silence. After reaching their destination, she turned towards him.
-There's something I'd like to ask you. It won't take long.
-If you say so…
The door of the guidance office opened and Kamoshida came from there with another teacher and the red-haired girl Ren met in the metro.
-I see you're already getting on top of the problem I'd mentioned this morning, Ms. Kawakami! I appreciate the support.
The red-haired girl glanced at Ren, who just nodded in response.
-Thank you once again.
-It was nothing…
-Oh, you know this guy, Yoshizawa?
-Yes, he lent me a helping hand earlier.
Kamoshida sighed, shook his head.
-I recommend you steer clear of the likes of him if you have any consideration for your future. Remember the discussion we just had? There are several students in this school you shouldn't get involved with… — Kamoshida pointed to Ren. — This one at the top of the list.
-Oh, the delinquent transfer student…?
-Sorry for the interruption, but I need to use the guidance office.
-Oh, pardon me. — Kamoshida snapped back to Yoshizawa. — We should be going too—don't want to get in the way of guiding this delinquent and all.
Kamoshida laughed and went out with the other teacher.
-…Please excuse us. — The girl said, bowing to both.
Ren just nodded and Yoshizawa walked away. Kawakami sighed heavily.
-After you.
"Looks like he already told Ms. Kawakami. I need to convince Kawakami, or at least explain everything to her depending on the situation… Expect for the worst, and turn things up-down!"
After entering and sitting on the desk, followed by Kawakami, Ren just glanced at her, and lifted his head, sighing tiredly. Kawakami sits in front of him, with a downed expression.
-I'm going to get straight to the point: did something happen between you and Mr. Kamoshida?
-Nothing from my part at least. I'm sorry to ask, but why did you ask me that?
-Well, there was that little exchange just now, but that's not all… — Kawakami sighed once again. — He gave me a brief lecture this morning, and your name came up. Something about the dangers of a lack of supervision…
"She doesn't know. That confirms my suspicions." Ren thought while Kawakami sighed again.
-I don't mean to pry, but… Just make sure you don't cause any problems, okay?
-Kawakami-sensei, I can promise you that. At least all I can do in my power.
-Okay.
-And one more thing.
-Yes?
Ren stared at her, giving her a serious look.
-I truly understand your situation. However, I hate to say this, but… — He adjusted his glasses and adjusted his posture. — If something became related to me beyond my knowledge and without a good reason, I'll have to pry into it.
-Huh…?
-Please calm down. I'm just saying I can't promise to get involved against my will in certain situations, due to my condition here in this school.
-I see… — She said down, looking away.
-Kawakami-sensei, don't worry. I promise you I'm not going to get involved in problems. But, in this situation…
-You mean the rumors, right…?
-Yes. Because of my situation in this school… I'll have to take serious measures.
-What type of measures…? — She asked afraid.
-I can't tell you now. But you'll see. I promise it's not something shady, nor dubious.
-You mean…?
-It's complicated to explain, but I promise that will be the only time that I'll have to do it. At least, that's what I hope. And Kawakami-sensei.
-Y-Yes?
-Can you keep this a secret, please? — Ren sighed. — As much I hate to ask you that, it's something you can't simply help me with. So, please don't say anything.
Kawakami stared at him quietly and looked to the desk.
-Promise me you're not involved in any problems.
-I can't. There's a problem now I'm involved in it against my will, and I need to solve it. I'm sorry, but I can't promise you that. However, … — She looked back at him. — I promise that's the only problem I have now. At least in this situation.
Kawakami stared at him in silence for minutes, before sighing and nodded her head in affirmation.
-Just once. I will trust you you're not involved at least at will. If you're lying to me…
-I'm not. I got involved against my will, but I'll end it with my own.
-Very well. I hope you do that soon as possible. — She looked at the door and glanced back at Ren. — That girl outside the office—you didn't make a pass at her, didn't you?
-Huh? No. We just met at the subway. We got into the same car and I helped her aid an elderly woman. That's all.
-Okay. Mr. Kamoshida keeping a real close eye on you… Apparently, you've been getting involved with Sakamoto-kun.
-As I said before, I don't have any issues with him, at least on my part.
-I know… And you seem acquainted with Yoshizawa-san as well.
-We just met once. That's all.
-…Maybe you're just naturally drawn to athletes?
Ren gave a small laugh.
-Sorry, bad joke.
-No, it's okay. Actually, I did gymnastics and parkour for several years before coming to Shujin.
Kawakami analyzed him.
-You don't seem very athletic…
-Well, I had to stop due to… my situation.
-I see… That's all I wanted to discuss. You're free to go.
-Thank you, Kawakami-sensei. And thank you for your vote of confidence in me.
-I'd expect you're not lying to me. Now let's go back to class.
After that, they went back to class and After an hour, Ren received a message.
So… I saw Kamoshida at the school gate this morning. He was just standing there looking at me with this shit-eating grin on his face.
Ugh, that's annoying… He was probably mocking you. — Ann answered.
Honestly, seeing that got me even more fired up about this. — Ryuji texted.
Yeah, I'm worried about Shiho, but I want to concentrate on our operation too. And I won't let myself get exhausted like last time. — Ann said.
He greets me with that fake smile… To be fair, he treated me as if I'm nothing… Not only that, he sent Kawakami to scold me. But that's not the important point. For now, we need to focus on the operation and prove Kamoshida's guilt before the board meeting. — Ren answered.
The board meeting's May 2nd, right? Can the trial be set before? — Ryuji asked.
I make sure of that. I'll have everything ready today. Be ready tomorrow. — Ren answered.
Okay, we just gotta take care of him before then.
I'm ready for this. Both the trial and the operation. — Ren answered.
The same goes for me. — Ryuji answered.
Me too! — Ann answered. — I'll do my best. Don't go without me, ok?
Yeah, you better let us know if you're going into the Palace. — Ryuji said.
Don't worry, I'm not planning to have all the fun just for me. — Ren answered. He put his phone back in his pocket and took a briefcase from his bag.
-Are you ready for this Ren? — Morgana asked in a whisper. Ren closed his eyes and breathed in calmly, remembering his plan with Ann, Ryuji, and Morgana.
-Now it's time for my part of the deal. I'm ready.
After the end of the class, Ren exited the classroom and took a quick detour on his way to the library.
-Oh… It's your first time at the library? — A female student asked, standing behind the reception desk.
-Yes… I need to borrow a book. Are you the librarian here?
-Yes, I am. It's my job to explain the rules of the library to first-time visitors, so…
Ren listened carefully, taking notes of the rules in his notepad.
"I can study here. That'll be useful to study law books… I wonder…"
-About borrowing books… You're only allowed to borrow one book at a time. Once you finish, please be sure to return to— Huh?
-Something's wrong?
-That badge… Are you a second-year?
-Yes… Why?
-Oh… Could you be the transfer student I keep hearing about!?
Ren sighed and slightly shook his head in affirmation.
-I knew it… Well… Sorry to ask you this, but… can you please not come here? You see… you're scaring the other students too…
-I'm that despicable…? — He asked himself, but the librarian heard him.
-No! No… I…
-Don't worry… I will not come here anymore…
-No… I didn't mean you can't use the library, but…
Ren sighed again.
-You don't need to explain yourself… I know when I'm not wanted. And that seems to be the case.
The librarian stood quiet and Ren exited the library.
-You're not welcomed anywhere here… and the other students are scared of you… — Morgana whispered worriedly. — I know there's nothing you can do about it, but that…
-Don't worry, I will thank Kobayakawa and Kamoshida for that… In court.
-I know, but… At least you can borrow books, and I saw a desk at the corner. You can at least study there, and raise your knowledge and guts…
-I know… Is just… I was expecting at least to find a place to breathe in peace… — Ren shook his head. — Well, I should borrow a book at least.
Ren came back and the library saw him.
-Oh, you're back… Do you need anything?
-I'd like to borrow a book.
-I see… As I said before You're only allowed to borrow one book at a time. Once you finish, please be sure to return the book to the library.
-Okay.
-These are all the books available you can check out now.
Ren took a quick look at the selection.
-Please can you lend me the Pirate Legend?
The Librarian turned to the bookshelf and withdrew a book from there.
-This one, yes? — Ren nodded his head to confirm. — Okay, be careful with it.
Taking the book, he carefully put it inside his bag and he walked away after signing the ledger. He exited the school and he felt another headache.
-Again? — Morgana asked worriedly. Ren walked to a vending machine and brought a bottle of water. — Will you be alright?
-I will… — Ren sighed, then he remembered something. — Hey Morgana, I still have that medicine doctor Takemi gave to me, right?
-Right. You haven't used it in the palace yet. Why?
-I remember she said that medicine is effective with exhaustion and pain. I should use it.
-What!? But...
-I'm having a huge headache, and I'm not feeling well. — Ren searched in his bag and found the paper bag with the medicine inside. — I need to use it. Besides, I still have to report to her, remember?
-If you're sure about that…
Ren in one gulp swallowed the pink liquid and he took a sip of water, feeling the bitter-sweet taste of the medicine.
-That should work. — Ren said going to the station.
-Where we're going now?
-To Tokyo High Court.
—
April, 18. Monday.
Kasumigaseki District. Tokyo High Court.
Reception.
3:35 PM. After School.
—
Ren arrived at the Tokyo High Court. Feeling better from his headache, but a little dazed and sleepy from the medicine, he managed to arrive on time. Wearing his attorney badge, instead of his usual second-year badge of Shujin, he went into the building, going to the reception counter.
-Hello. Welcome to Tokyo High Court. How can I help you?
-Hello. My name is Ren Amamiya. I'm a defense attorney at law. I have an appointment with High Judge Katsuo Hana. I'm an associate of his.
The receptionist typed in her computer, checking the schedule.
-Mr. Amamiya, correct? My apologies, but now Judge Hana is in a meeting with Prosecutor Juken Sokuzen.
-They both are actually waiting for me. I made my appointment with both by phone.
The receptionist looked surprised at him and grabbed her phone dialing Hana's office to check the information. To her surprise, she received confirmation.
-I see… Thank you for your time. — She ended the call. — Mr. Amamiya, Judge Hana, and Prosecutor Sokuzen are waiting for you in Judge Hana's Office. It's on the 4th floor, Room 435.
-Thank you very much.
Ren went to the elevator and he pushed the 4th-floor button. The doors closed and the elevator went up.
-Are you sure about that? — Morgana asked.
-Absolutely. — Ren answered. — Besides, both of them owe me a favor.
-A favor?
-I helped both in a case during my training with Chief Nick and Chief Miles. I actually helped them to conclude a case and arrest an important criminal.
-I see… Well, good luck with that.
-Thanks. We are going to need it.
After arriving on the 4th floor, Ren walked in the direction of Room 435, which took him a minute to find out. After reaching the room, he knocked on the door and waited for an answer.
-Please come in.
Ren enters the room and he sees two men sitting by a large desk. One of them was wearing a judge attire, with his hair slicked back, and with a light beard on his face. The other was wearing a grey suit, with a white social shirt and a dark green tie. He adjusted his glasses while combing his hair to keep it tidy.
-Hello Judge Hana and Prosecutor Sokuzen. It has been a long time, hasn't it? — Ren said, bowing slightly to both.
-Amamiya-kun! It has been a long time. So, are you staying quiet? — High Judge asked, extending his hand towards Ren who shook.
-I was quiet until I got into huge trouble against my will.
-You're like your mentors. Can't get too long outside the courts and out of trouble. — Prosecutor Sokuzen said, extending his hand as well, to which Ren promptly shook it. — Are you alright, at least?
-I am. Don't worry about it. — He said sitting in one of the free seats. — You two already have an idea of why I'm here.
-Yeah, you want us to repay that favor we owe you. Seeing since you are actually not happy, it seems you are calling us without any choice.
-Yeah, I actually ran out of options. — Ren answered while checking his phone. — Remember you guys have said you'll help me when I return to the legal world? The time has arrived, and I need you guys to do that.
-Are you sure? I thought you were going to leave that during your college years. For you to ask us that… — Sokuzen commented.
-I know, but the situation now is worse than I thought.
-Care to fill us in?
-Of course.
Ren explained the entire situation to both legal colleagues. Looking at both, he snapped his look towards both, waiting for their answer.
-When I heard about how the volleyball team of Shujin went to nationals I was surprised by the fact how the team improved in such a short amount of time, in exchange for most of their sports teams. That explains everything. — Sokuzen said.
-So, he is expelling you and the other two to use as scapegoats… Why I'm not surprised… I've been seeing this almost all the time outside the court. This type of situation has increased recently in the courts. — Hana said, annoyed. He looked back at Sokuzen. — I believe you came at the right moment to call our help. So, what'd you need?
-I need to solve this in court, and I need them to do this. Since they probably already pressed charges against me, it's only a matter of time before the police appear at my guardian's home.
-I will check if they did. Depending on how things are proceeding, that will be easier for us. — Sokuzen said. — Also, I bet you want permission to investigate everything. I will grant you official permission as always, since that is the normal proceedings, and we will grant you some special permission. Us actually.
-Thank you. That will be important for the case.
-And you still need to convince them to solve things… How are you going to do that?
-And that is the point as to why I need that favor from you two.
Both looked at them, staring seriously at Ren.
-You really want to set everything you need on fire, don't you?
Ren laughed.
-Let's just say I have some sense to do reckless acts.
-More like you love the feeling of being in danger. Well, what's your plan?
-Well, due to my situation, the plan is…
Ren explained his plan, saying how he was going to proceed. After some time, both nodded in affirmation.
-So that's your plan... — Hana said, calmly.
-I believe that it will work.
-Of course, it will. That's never failed.
-Well, technically yes, it failed before. Several times.
-Ignoring that, I can make them do that. So, can you guys help me with that one?
-Of course, we can. We can get everything ready tomorrow if everything goes well. We'll give you a call when everything's ready.
-Thank you. That will be enough.
-We hope that it will.
Ren stood up and pulled his phone from his pocket.
-Please send me a message when everything is ready. I need to go now. I'm sorry for not staying longer, but I have some business to attend to.
-It's okay. We'll be waiting for you in court.
-Me too. I see you guys these days.
—
Yongen-Jaya District. Takemi Medical Clinic.
After School.
—
After Ren leaving the High Court, he went straight back to Yongen-Jaya, taking a quick detour towards the Shibuya Underground Mall to buy some fertilizer to the plant in the attic and towards the small junk shop close to the Takemi Clinic to buy some materials. After that, he went towards Takemi Clinic.
-Are you sure about that?
-I am sure. We need that medicine, remember?
-If you say so...
Ren enters the clinic lobby and sees Tae sitting on the other side of the reception booth, working with something, to the point she almost wasn't paying attention to who enters the clinic. Almost. He walked to the doctor and he played the desk bell. The punk doctor looked at him for a second before snapped her attention back to her work.
-Good evening, how can I help you? — She asked without giving him attention. Ren picked his bag and took the report out, putting it on the booth.
-Good evening. Before I forget, here's the report you asked me for.
-Thanks… I guess…
-Now then, I came here because I need something: I need some medicine, but not just any medicine. Do you have some "special" medicine for me?
-…What? — Tae asked, irritated by his sudden comment.
-That's a yes, huh? So, tell me more about it, Doctor Takemi. I'm kinda curious about this medicine in question. Care to tell me more about it?
Tae glanced at him for a brief moment and looked at the report on her booth.
-Now I remember you. You're the kid who was at Leblanc. Amamiya, right?
-Correct, Doctor Takemi.
-So… Regular medicine won't do the trick?
-Yes, something like that…
-And why should I care?
-Please Doctor Takemi, I need that medicine and trust me I don't want to bother you, but I don't have any other choice. Please, I beg you…
She glanced at him again and sighed tiredly.
-Fine… Very well. Just head into the examination room for now.
-Okay. And thank you.
Ren went into the examination room and Tae went inside after a minute. She laid herself against the door and stared at Ren.
-So… you want that "medicine", huh?
-Yes. Why?
Before Ren answered, she quickly locked the door and stared at Ren with pierced eyes, trying to intimidate him. He analyzed the goth doctor. Her visual is simpler than her casual look, still having the punk-rock-gothic vibe, a simple blue-gray short dress, a vivid red belt around her hips, just a little below her waist, black gladiators' high heels and necklaces, a signature item of hers. But her posture is what caught his attention, she's always trying to keep her poise, keeping the balance of her own weight on both legs, something when someone who doesn't have the necessary attention can say she is trying to keep herself stand up, however, he knows that can be a reflection of indifference. Her intense, piercing, and stone eyes can say she had that type of conversation almost every single day. Combining those two factors with her personality, she is someone who doesn't care about a few things, who always dedicates her own time to achieve her objective, with a strong will. a focused mind, a very intelligent and sharp woman. For Ren that is a deadly combination, especially in every single aspect of life and in court. She was analyzing the black-haired teenager as well. Tae noticed his quick reflex, sharp mind, and quiet temperance, but with a sarcastic comment and intense stare. She grabbed him by the collar of his blazer and pulled him closer to her.
-What are you trying to do?
-Nothing… I swear… — The black-haired teenager answered. Tae released her grip and Ren adjusted his blazer.
-So… which conservation of mine did you eavesdrop to know?
Ren smiled. He knew at this point he can't play dumb with her.
-Do you call that being subtle? I know I'm not that good at hiding, but that idiot yelled for everyone to hear about it. If you want to keep your conversation a secret, you should at least avoid raising your voices. Anyone could hear you two, you know?
-As if I care about that…
-Then why shouldn't people know about it?
The doctor glanced at him, with anger.
-That none of your business… Besides I was going to dispose of that medicine anyway. I got a little too carried away with it. — Tae answered looking away. Ren knew something was off at that moment.
-Really, that's a shame to know. Are you really going to throw away your life's work?
-Why do you care? Tell me; why is a high schooler like yourself so interested in that medicine?
-Well… Is that strange for me to get interested?
-Actually yes. You don't seem to be very athletic, so… what exactly are you up to?
-Is for my exams. I need them for my studies. — Ren said. It was the first thing in his head.
-For your entrance exams…? Oh, I see… — She said, analyzing the teenager again. — So, you're looking to improve your concentration and reduce your fatigue?
-Exactly.
-Hm, you know that's not the best idea. But if that's what you want to do…
Tae unlocked the door and opened it, showing the exit.
-Then good luck with that. I'm not going to help you with that. If you want to destroy your health it's up to you. Besides, I don't have any obligation to help you with that. Can't you have an energy drink or something?
-Please I need that medicine. Can you open an exception for me?
-Why are you so insistent?
-Because I need that medicine. And besides, if I could, I would never come to ask for your help. Trust me, I am not here because I want to. I ran out of options.
-Once again, why should I help you?
-Why not? You don't have anything to lose. Besides, it wasn't like I will tell anyone.
-Don't even dare to tell… Or I will…
-Will what? If you think I'm going to do that, you are sorely mistaken. I know you can press charges against me, and trust me I already have enough problems to deal with. I don't need another from you.
Tae scratched the back of her head.
-Ugh, you're annoying, you know that?
-Yeah, I know. Everyone says that.
-Unfortunately, that medicine is quite expensive and isn't something a high schooler like you can get your hands on. It costs almost as much as a car.
-I can pay for it.
-You can? I highly doubt that. Why don't you just go home and forget about it?
-I'm sorry, but I am not planning to leave without that medicine. And besides, you're being ungrateful to me.
-Ungrateful?
-Yes. I gave you the report you asked for.
-And what? You don't have any obligation to help me.
-But I helped you anyway. So, why don't you help me?
-If you have a good proposal…
Ren thought for a moment.
-Well, if you're done, can you...
-Can I work for it?
-W-What?
-I said, can I work for it?
-Work? As a part-timer help?
-Exactly. Remember our brief conversation in Leblanc, when you said I look like a good experimental subject, so I'll be glad to help you, in any necessary way you want. If I need to become your own personal experimental subject to obtain this medicine, well here I am. And you don't even need to worry about it, I'm very conscious about this. If you need insurance, you can just make me sign a term, telling me I'm doing this by my own free will, that is if you care though.
"This kid so determined to reach this point?" The punk doctor asked mentally, hiding her doubts. She remained silent for minutes thinking about all of that.
-…Do you consider yourself someone with a good amount of stamina?
-Considering nowadays, yes, I guess I can handle it. — Ren answered, making a quick analysis of his condition. — Or you want to look for another person?
-Do you really want to do it or not? — She asked irritated.
-Okay I accept! — Ren said, slightly intimidated, even he is taller than the doctor.
-Now you'll be participating in clinical trials for my medicine. Hang on. I'll be right back.
Tae walked to her desk and picked up a key, walking to another point of the examination room.
-Clinical trials? — Ren asked.
-Yes. I admit I have been looking for a young person around your age to help me out. But I haven't been able to find one, even after putting an ad in the paper.
After a few minutes, she came back to Ren with a glass of some unknown red colored substance.
-Here you go.
"Seriously? I became her guinea pig…?" Ren asked himself. "That medicine…? Looks… like some type of juice or soda to me…" The teenager thought, knowing he shouldn't underestimate the power and effect of the medicine, seeing how he reacted when he used the sample Takemi gave to him.
-Any side effects? — Ren asked.
-Worried about it, huh? Well don't worry, you can relax. Rest assured, my autopsy is guaranteed to find out exactly what part of it killed you.
-What!?
-What, aren't you going to take it? The exit's right there if you want to leave.
Ren looked at the red substance and gulped.
"If I don't drink this thing, she'll never sell me her medicine."
-Well? Go on.
"You know what? That's funny actually… But isn't like I'm going to die anyway…"
Ren smiled at Tae and raised the cup in celebration.
-Cheers!
Ren drank the medicine in one gulp, surprising Tae in the process.
-What!? I can't believe you actually drank it…
"Well, that was a piece of cake… The taste is weird… Bitter, yet sour… But I can handle it. Let's see how I'm going to react to it…"
Tae started to examine Ren, checking his signals.
-Wow… Still doing okay, huh? Hm… Not bad, for a high schooler.
-Yeah, I guess—
-Uh… You're…
Ren started to tremble and he felt his body shaking. He stood up and tried to arrive at the medical bed, but he failed, falling to the ground.
"Damn… it…"
-Welp. Game over, I guess. — Ren heard Tae say before he lost his consciousness.
—
After an hour, Tae was writing on her clipboard, analyzing the teenager who was in a condition of temporally comatose. She noticed him reacting to the effects of the medicine. As far she could see, everything was going according to her expectations, just having a few variations. However, the back-alley doctor's thoughts are more focused on the teenager laid on the bed. As she thought, he has the necessary attributes to be an excellent participant as a test subject. She never expected him to accept participation in the first place. She was just teasing him, but she didn't expect him to come to her and volunteered himself to be a guinea pig, and in exchange for her medicine, to the point of ignoring her warnings and threats and drank the medicine without any hesitation. Anyone with a little common sense in mind wouldn't do what he did and if anyone who saw him doing that is going to think he was crazy for doing something stupid at that level just to obtain the rumored medicine. This event is something she doesn't see every day, something she can almost call a miracle. Now she is just waiting for him to wake up, seeing if he can be helpful for her or not. It only took a few minutes for him to regain his consciousness and to her surprise, he only was confused due to the loss of consciousness. No sequels or other side effects. She smiled in satisfaction, seeing how Ren and her medicine exceeded all her goals.
-Good evening, did you enjoy your nap? — Tae asked ironically, turning her attention back to the clipboard. He only smiled back to her and answered:
-Even I want to say no… I've kinda enjoyed it, to be honest. Not the best way to fall asleep though… — He commented with a smirk.
-You sure are a weird kid, with some sadistic sense of humor. — She commented. Ren just shrugged, ignoring her comment.
-By the way, just for curiosity, if I wasn't able to survive, how would you explain that to my guardian, and especially to my parents? If you don't know, I want the honor to at least be buried.
Turning back her attention to him, she finished the report and stared at the teenager.
-What should I say if that happened? Tell them you accepted by your own free will ingest one of my experimental medicines without knowing the possible side effects and died in the process? You believe I want to tell an unknown couple and to your guardian, you died in a stupid way? — She asked with acid irony. — I bet if they can, they can resurrect you to just lecture you and kill you again if that happens.
"But for their sake, they are never going to know about this, neither will my mentors." Ren smiled mentally with that thought.
-Well, what should I say? It's not like I'm you and I don't even want to have the work to tell some strangers about the death of their son if I was you. As you said, you don't care. — He answered without any worry when his grin got wider. — Besides, you're very confident to the point to not be afraid about getting sued or to have some idiot's dead over your shoulders... or both.
-If you're going to complain, why have you come in the first place? I could've administered poison or something that could leave you crippled for the rest of your life. — She said, irritated. Tae was dealing with people for a long time, and she always knew when someone wanted to play with her. That is a game she always won, especially with men who had to deal with her. As for Ren, he knows how to deal with tough people as well, especially in court. As far he looks naïve, or even dumb, he knows how to break any type of argument, he just needs to know and wait when the person shows the breach on their argument, like now. He just sighed carefreely and gave back to her a calm, but provoking stare.
-I decided to trust in you, after all, you are a doctor, and it is your duty as a doctor to help people, right?
The punk doctor mentally felt an edge of annoyance and at the same time expecting that somehow. No one was going so far in any conversation with her, not without the person losing their patience, but now she is the one who is losing, or almost losing it.
"For you to answer in that way, or you're got a lot of nerve, or you're very naïve and stupid, but I have to admit you're got guts, for a teenager," Tae commented mentally to herself, analyzing him a little more, believing that he's just been arrogant towards her.
-Now going to the point, do you remember anything from the moment you took the medicine until now? — Tae asked and Ren reacted not knowing what to answer. She noticed his condition hasn't changed, indicating the medicine still working in his body, trying to wear off of his body in the process, making her write again in her clipboard. — By the look in your eyes, I'd say you don't. You briefly woke up from your coma, but you were completely dazed during the entire examination… You eventually lost consciousness and fell back asleep.
"Darn… that was rough! At least I can use this in the safe rooms and keep going. That should work…" Ren thought quietly, trying to remember what happened during the clinical trial and process the information.
-Are you out of your mind? Only an idiot would have drunk that.
-I'm very aware, Dr. Takemi. Besides, my future is on the line here, so desperate times call for desperate measures, right? — Ren answered quickly, always keeping his calm posture. — Is there any problem with it?
Tae stared at him for a brief moment, something that makes Ren ring his inner alert, seeing that as a bad sign. He knows she's now keeping an eye upon him, and that could backfire at him at any moment.
-Fine. By the way, the reason you lost consciousness was because of the taste.
-What…? — The teenager asked, confused.
-The taste of the medicine produces a foul smell when it mixes with gastric juices, similar to surstromming. — Ren nodded, understanding the doctor's explanation. — All that matters is that thanks to you I was able to get some good data.
-It's good to hear I'm actually useful.
-Ok, it's my turn to make good on my part of the deal. That's why I waited until you woke up.
-Let me guess… I was dazed when you talked about that before... — Ren said irritated due to the situation he was in, making the doctor chuckle. — Okay, now you want me to stay quiet, right?
-Yes. I don't want the general public to know about my original medicine. So you're strictly prohibited from disclosing what happens here to anyone… Understood?
-I don't intend to tell anyone, so the same goes for you doctor.
-Okay, then it's a deal.

Ren stared at Sae calmly. This time the prosecutor noticed something different. He was only giving a small smirk, almost like he knew something was going to happen to him, at the same time, he was dazed and trying to still awake, almost he was expecting that. Reluctant, but she decided ask:
-Something wrong?
-I think I'm really screwed this time.
That answer was surprising for her, to the point she almost lost her composure. Quickly recovering her coldness, Sae started to ask again.
-Why?
-If I escape from that, I can't escape from someone I know. — Ren commented and his smile widened.
-At least you can treat your wounds. Considering all the actions you're taken; you must've had someone with medical expertise. Who?
-Who what?
-Who is, and how did you treat your wounds?
Ren closed his eyes and answered calmly and politely.
-Why do you ask? Do you need an examination?

Yongen-Jaya District, Takemi Clinic
7:42 PM. Evening
—
I am thou, thou art I…
Thou hast acquired a new vow.
It shall become the wings of rebellion
That breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Death Persona,
I have obtained the winds of blessing that
Shall lead to freedom and new power…
Ren feels the birth of a new social link, seeing the arcana of his new confidant.
"Death… How ironic… The doctor is the angel of Death herself…" He commented to himself.
-As long as you come here for it, I'll give you the medicine at a good price whenever you want, and I may even add additional selections, in time. So, I look forward to your patronage. I'll put together some compensation for all your efforts today. But you're not getting in the writing. Based on today's results, I think I can whip up some new medicine for next time. Drop when you're ready for it.
-Okay, doctor. I'm looking forward to your patronage too. — Ren answered in a good mood.
-Oh yeah, I'll contact you when I'm done preparing for the next clinical trial.
-Next trial…? Oh, fine by me... — Ren answered, embarrassed. — Why do you need my help, I mean…
-Well, I was told, teenage test subjects are quite valuable in the medical research industry, so I need your help in this task. I give you medicine, and in exchange, you become my guinea pig.
-Guinea pig? — Ren asked, then he only smirked. — Well, whatever…
-Don't you want to discuss details?
-It's fine by me, I can give you a nickname at least… Oh, by the way, if you can help me, I need some medical advice.
-Medical advice?
-Yes, I need some help with some diagnostics.
-Okay, if it doesn't interrupt my work, I can help.
-Thank you.
The brief moment of silence was broken in the clinic when Ren received another message. That time is from Sojiro, asking where he is, making Ren sigh. Answering his guardian quickly, he gets up, and takes his things.
-I need to go. My guardian is worried about me.
-I see, well if you're feeling better now, you can go home. Try to come here soon as possible… — Tae said, turning in another direction, whispering to herself. — …I have to perfect this medicine.
Ren looked to the doctor and walked to the door.
- You live pretty close, right? You might still feel some dizziness, so take it easy on your way home. I'm not really in the mood to write up an autopsy. So, take care of yourself.
-Okay, I will. — Ren said with a smile while opening the door. — Have a good night, doctor Takemi.
-All right, take care.
Ren exited the clinic. Once he was outside the clinic, he finally could reveal his thoughts. His eyes reflected his doubts about what he heard before walking out of the clinic. One of his traits is the ability to hide his true self and his thoughts, which makes him able to identify when someone is doing the same as him. He knows he can't always convince the person when he lies, but he knows how to disguise it, to a point when most of the persons don't know when he is lying, but there are some exceptions. His mentors are one of them. Phoenix and Miles sometimes can see when he's lying. Now he found someone with the same skill, or similar, someone like himself. Tae is more than she shows, and Ren knows it and her story is strange, even with his bare knowledge about it, he knows when something is odd on all of this, and once he gets the first hint, that's going to lead him to the web of lies around all of that story. What can he find in that process? Why is she threatened to that point? That's one of the many questions running inside his head. At the same time in the clinic, Tae was raising her defenses towards the teenager as well. His story about the entrance exams was something that raised even more her suspicions about her new guinea pig. She knows he is lying about that, at least in that part to her. Surprisingly for the punk-rock doctor, Ren was not lying about the rest, but that leads to many questions without answers." Who is he? And what does he want?" She knows he can play dirty, he proved that now.
"What is he planning…?" She asked herself, seeing all of that like an elaborate, ingenious plan. Curiously or coincidentally Ren and Tae have one thought in common, going further into this new deal they made together, to see what is going to happen, not entirely sure what they have gotten themselves into. Ren always had suspicions towards rumors as coincidence, when that becomes a pattern, he becomes sure there more in the middle of this. Now he is sure, Ren had one more thing to investigate, but for now, he needs to focus on his actual trial, after all, he has a king to dethrone.

Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
-You better not be up to any trouble. Make just one mistake and your life's over. — Sojiro warned.
-Okay, I'll be careful.
-Hey, instead of hanging around, you should be studying or something. If there aren't any customers, you can use the shop.
-I can really use it? It's fine with you?
-Within reason, obviously. Don't touch anything in the kitchen. If you're going to study, you can use that table. Just don't leave the place covered in eraser crumbs, all right?
-All right.
-Oh, that's right… One of my customers mentioned that the counter's pretty comfortable to read. — Sojiro said, pointing to a counter. — Well, your time's yours to spend. Just make sure it's after my customers are gone.
-Alright.
-Or hey, if you wanna clean the shop, I'm not gonna turn you down. The cleaning stuff's in the bathroom.
-No thanks… I think I'm going to study.
Sojiro laughed.
-Okay. Take your time.
Ren saw a magazine on one of the desks.
-Can I solve the crosswords?
-Of course.
Ren took the magazine and solved the crosswords and he went back to his room. There he looked at the pile of junk next to a plant.
-Let's clean this place.
-Disposing everything unnecessary, Ren put the plant at the corner and put the step-ladder and the bicycle in the small corridor at the side of the stairs.
-Done.
-That plant is still alive. We can decorate the room with it.
-Yeah, I know. It's a miracle that the plant is still alive. Chihiro.
-What?
The plant's name. Chihiro.
-Oh, I see. Let's take care of this plant so it won't dry up and wither away. — Morgana glanced at the bookshelf. — Since we're here…
-I know. Let's check if we could find something useful.
Ren started to clean the bookshelf, taking a few books to read later.
-Why are you keeping those books?
-These are law books. That will be useful for us and it would be a waste if we dispose of them anyway.
-Okay, at least take something easy to read as well. Here, that will be useful too.
-The Yongen Walker issue 04. Well, that will be useful in fact. Thanks, Mona.
-You're welcome. I wonder why this magazine was in the middle of these books… It doesn't matter now. Now, what matters is that the room looks better now.
-Right. Way better than when I arrived here. Now… — Ren turned to the direction of the old CRT TV he found. — This old CRT TV is still working but…
-Without a tuner, we can't watch it… That was quite a treasure we found.
-But if we can't use it, it will be useless.
-True… Well, we should sleep now. Tomorrow will be a long day.
-Agreed my friend. You better prepare yourself, that will be a show tomorrow.

Ren was organizing his things when he received a message from Ryuji.
Hey, where are you right now? — Ryuji asked.
I'm still in school. Why? — Ren answered.
I'm still at school too. I'm by the staircase outside your classroom.
Want to go to the Palace? — Ren asked.
No, actually it's another thing.
What is it?
I thought of somethin' these days when we were running around the Palace. Maybe it's 'cause I haven't been moving around as much lately, but I feel like I'm getting weak.
Thinking about it, I don't have as much exercise as I need. I have always been doing parkour and gymnastics, but when I go to a Palace, my form and strength are better than in the real world. Well, you should be lacking training too, like me. So, what's your idea?
We're probably gonna run into some pretty tough Shadows sometime. We should try to get stronger too.
Agreed. Maybe we need to fight more against the Shadows. Some training outside the Palace should be helpful too.
Yeah, but you still can do some crazy stunts, like you did in the Palace. In that way, you prolly gonna recover your shape in no time. Btw, it's sunny outside. Perfect for training! So, you wanna get your blood pumpin'?
Wait a minute, let me check my schedule.
Ren checked his conversation with Ann. He doesn't receive a message.
"Better ask her before accepting Ryuji's invitation."
Ann, you did convince Shiho's mom? — The black-haired teenager answered.
Ren waited two minutes when he received an answer. — The natural blondie replied,
No, she refused. She became… very suspicious about all of that.
Ren thought and knowing the consequences of using the B plan, he sighed expecting that.
I know I'm being very persistent, but ask her again. I know she already asked you to stop this, but I can't watch this and don't do anything.
Ren waited another two minutes for an answer. Nothing came.
"I should…"
He heard his phone ringing interrupting his thought, indicating a message had been received. He checked the message.
Okay, I'm going to ask her one more time. But don't expect anything. — Ann answered.
I know. I don't want to get this using a warrant. Ann, sorry for asking you this.
Don't worry, I know you're doing this for Shiho's sake. And for everyone's sake.
Thank you.
I'll send an answer later.
Ren sits down and thinks about Ryuji's invitation.
-Ryuji went to the trouble of inviting you, and looks like he has a lot on his mind… — Morgana pointed.
-I know that. Well, I don't intend to refuse. I want to make some friends here in Tokyo.
-Is it something related to your power?
-Yes, but I want to at least enjoy this whole year I'm going to spend here.
-I see.
-And since Ryuji is an athlete, that is going to be very useful in returning to my training.
-It's true that training your body will let you be able to move when it counts. So, you plan to spend time with Ryuji?
-Why not?
Ren sends an answer to Ryuji.
Sure. So, what's your idea for training?
Let's do some quick warm-ups behind the gym then. Oh. Be sure to change into your gym clothes first.
Got it.

Ren and Ryuji are stretching themselves, doing some warm-ups before starting their training.
-Man, this place brings back memories… — Ryuji said happily.
-This place is very special for you. — Ren commented. — What's this place?
-This is my secret trainin' spot. Er… Was. Back when I was on the track team.
-Oh. I see… I had a place like you in my hometown. So, why did you decide to train again?
-You know, I've been thinkin' about tryin' to run again. — Ryuji commented.
-That is related to that message from earlier? About you feeling weak? — Ren asked, remembering Ryuji's message.
-Yeah. Fightin' in that other world was a total shock. I couldn't move like I used to. It just felt… lame. — Ryuji said feeling bad. — So I started thinkin' maybe I need to build up my muscles again. Anything's gotta be better than this flimsy body, right? — He said excitedly.
-Right.
-Plus, maybe then I'll be able to help out a little more.
-You seem very excited about that! I'm counting on you.
-Hell yeah. I'm lookin' forward to this. — Ryuji looked at Ren for a moment. — You need to build up too. I help you with that.
-Thanks. — Ren said toying with a lock of his hair, nervous.
-Anyways, you act like it's only me who's gonna be doin' this, but you're gettin' in on it too.
-Really!? I thought you just wanted some company.
-Whoa, don't look so surprised! Why'd you think I had you go and change into that? It'd be pointless if I was the only one gettin' super-fast, right?
-You're right. I've been feeling like a wimp lately... — Ren commented, looking away embarrassed. — So, what's your idea for training?
-All right, I'm gonna do some knee lift sprints. You're stuck with normal ones!
-Hey, push me forward. I'm not fragile, you know. Besides, I need to do stunts better than before.
-Okay, let's work these thin legs of yours. — Ryuji said, starting to run.
-Let's see if you're gonna continue talking tough after I finish with you.
Both run around the school, doing the sprint with all their strength. After half of an hour, they stopped the run, going back to the spot they started. Ryuji and Ren are panting, both tired. Ryuji grunted frustratedly.
-Damn, my legs're all tight… — He said massaging each leg.
-You're okay? You don't look so good.
-I've lackin' a lot of training. If I was like before…
-What was it like before? — Ren asked. Ryuji turned to Ren and breathed tiredly.
-Before Kamoshida came along? — Ryuji asked and Ren nodded. He sighed sadly. — Before him, the track team was the biggest thing this school had goin' for it. But it all changed after he got the coach fired and took over as the sub.
-And he tried to get rid of yours after that?
-Yeah… That bastard… Right from the very start, he was tryin' to get rid of us. Remember that stuff from the Palace, right? — Ren nodded in affirmative. — He'd did the same. He'd give up crazy workouts, then when we couldn't do 'em, he'd add even more on the top of that… Day after day was nothing but that bullshit… He was goin' after me especially. — Ryuji said upset.
-You're not a person who acts without reason. What happened in fact?
-He knew… He knew I was the kinda guy who'd fight back. If my time dropped even a little, he'd cuss me out. Then on top of that, he brought up my parents…
-I don't need to guess what happened next… — Ren said uneasy, understanding how Ryuji is feeling. — You don't need to say it, you know?
-Yeah, but there's no point in hidin'… — Ryuji sighed tiredly. — Truth is, my mom's the only one I got. All my dad did when he was still around was drink. Sometimes he'd even beat me, or my mom. I dunno how that bastard Kamoshida found out, but he told the whole goddamn team…
Ryuji became silent after that, remembering what happened. Ren tightened his closed fist in anger, outraged with all of this.
-I see… Then you hit him. I am not gonna say you're wrong. He used you…
-Yeah. It was like he wanted me to do it though. He called it an "act of violence," and shut the team down… — Ryuji said lift down his head. — Thanks to that, the other guys on the team treat me like some kinda traitor… And they ain't wrong. 'Cause of me, they all lost their shot at the championship.
-It's not your fault. He was going to get rid of you anyway... Like now... — Ren said, but he looked serious at Ryuji. — But we are not going to let that happen. I swear, I'm going to stop him in court.
-I know! — Ryuji said and think for a moment. — 'bout the trial… You can say 'bout me. Y'know, like I said there no point of hidin' anymore.
-Are you sure? — Ren asked. — I don't want to force you to do anything.
-You can do it. And I know, you're gonna do the tough part. You're gonna need all the ammo you got. I wanna see him try to escape that. — Ryuji said smiling and Ren smiled as well.
-You're right. — Ren stared at Ryuji. — Hey, he gotta react fast to escape that.
Ryuji laughed after hearing that phrase.
-Maybe you should aim at his knee.
-You're sure of that.
Ren became serious again.
-Hey Ryuji, do you want to go back? — Ren asked.
-To the track team? Nah… How I could after that…?
-Why wouldn't you? — Ren asked.
-Why wouldn't you? — Ryuji asked, confused.
-Yeah, you can, remember?
Ryuji stays silent for a few seconds before losing his patience.
-C'mon, don't ask me tough questions like that. I'm not very smart, y'know!
Ren laughed after hearing that.
-Really? I think you're smart, you just lack some mental training.
Ryuji laughs as well.
-Yeah, I know there's a way. But anyway, it doesn't matter now. That's all in the past! I'm only thinkin' about the future now! That's what we're gonna do—build the future! We gotta think positive thoughts, brother!
-You're right! — Ren said, feeling Ryuji's excitement. Both clapped their hands as a sign of trust. Feeling his bond with Ryuji deepen, Ren feels his bond with Ryuji becoming stronger. After a few seconds, Ryuji became serious.
-Hey, you're lookin' well. That not fair.
-Do you think you can go for another run?
-You're kiddin'!? C'mon, we're all warmed up, right? I'm not that bad, and I can still goin' on.
-I want to see that.
-By the way, you're actually pretty good at runnin'. Not as good as me though! — Ryuji commented happily. — Now let's see if you can beat me.
They run for an hour, taking some pauses to rest and drink water. After the intensive training, Ryuji and Ren part ways to their respective homes.

Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
Ren arrived at Leblanc and he heard his phone ring.
-Hello, Amamiya speaking.
-Amamiya, it's me. Sokuzen.
-Hello, Prosecutor Sokuzen. How are you doing?
-Good. Well, I called you to notify you that everything's ready. We can start tomorrow in the morning.
-Perfect. I'll be waiting. Thank you once again.
-You're welcome. By the way, are you sure about this?
-Absolutely. Unlike you, I love to deal with these problematics' morons.
-Only you can see the fun of that. Well, I will see you tomorrow, if my presence will be necessary.
-Ok, see you tomorrow.
Ren ended the call and looked at Sojiro.
-What?
-Just stay out of trouble, okay? Just 'cause you seem to take school seriously doesn't mean I'm not keeping an eye on you? I'll know what's what as soon as I see your grades, got it?
-Got it.
-If you wanna prove you're turnin' over a new leaf, make studying your second biggest habit, after breathing. I don't need to say to keep your studies in day.
-Okay, I will.
The customer ended his coffee and exited the shop.
-You can study now.
-Thanks.
-I'm leaving the shop now. Flip the sign for me.
-I will.
Sojiro exited the shop and Ren flipped the sign. After that Ren took the book he borrowed from the Shujin library and started to read sitting on the counter. Once he finished reading, he went upstairs and treated the plant. After that, he went to sleep.

April, 20. Wednesday.
Aoyama-Itchome District. Shujin Academy.
Classroom 2-D.
10:00 AM. Morning.
—
The class was proceeding normally until the class heard an unusual commotion outside.
-I don't know what is happening outside, but please ignore it. — Kawakami asked. – I hope it's nothing...
Everyone ignored it and everything went back to normal. Then the door opened and Principal Kobayakawa came with a businessman.
-Amamiya, this officer wants to talk with you. Please come with me and Ms. Kawakami to the guidance office.
Kawakami looked away as the students started to whisper about it.
-I bet he did something. Probably assaulted someone.
-Maybe he wreaked havoc again…
Ren lifted from his chair and he and Ms. Kawakami followed Kobayakawa to the Guidance Office. Once they arrived, both saw Kamoshida coming from the corridor.
-What's happening? — He asked.
-I don't know Mr. Kamoshida. This officer wants to talk with him. — Kobayakawa said, pointing towards Ren.
-That's not surprising, since who's being called…
Ren reached the door and the officer showed his identification.
-Officer Towanaki, from the district courthouse office. Are you Ren Amamiya?
Ren nodded his head in affirmation
-Please sign this. — He took from his paste a file, which Ren promptly signed.
-Thank you. Now… — The officer turned towards Kobayakawa and Kamoshida. — Are you two Suguru Kamoshida and Hiroshi Kobayakawa?
-Yes. Why? — Both asked confused.
-I have an official intimation from the public prosecutor office, from Prosecutor Sokuzen in your names. Here, sign here.
The officer gave the paper to Kobayakawa who read it once he took it.
-What!? We're being sued!?
-The Shujin Academy is being sued as well. — The office added. — But the main charges are against you two. Please sign here.
-No, I will not sign anything! I want to know why I'm being sued?
-All the information is here in the file.
Kobayakawa read the paper and who sued him.
-Amamiya, you're suing us?
-Yes, I'm suing Shujin Academy, more specifically, Mr. Kamoshida and you.
-Why am I being sued?
-I thought you knew Mr. Kamoshida. Or do I need to remind you?
-It's because of the rumors you're being expelled? I don't know how I'm related to those rumors.
-I thought you being the one who expelled us was enough to spread the rumors. Especially at the fact everyone in the school except for me, Mr. Sakamoto, and Mr. Mishima knows we're being expelled.
-What? — Kobayakawa and Kawakami asked.
-Yes. Someone spread the rumor that Sakamoto, Mishima and I were going to be expelled. And according to these rumors, it was Kamoshida who said it.
-What? What are you saying Amamiya!? Mr. Kamoshida, please explain to me.
-I thought it was obvious. I was being threatened by Amamiya, Sakamoto, and Mishima, because of that I decided to ask for their expulsion. I don't know how these rumors started and how they spread so fast, but I assure you I'm not involved in this situation.
-Well, I do believe in you. You don't need to worry about their expulsion because I'm doing this right now. From now on, Amamiya, Sakamoto, and Mishima are expelled from the Shujin Academy! Take your belongings and leave.
-Wait! — Ren shouted. — You have no right to do that.
-Well, I have, I'm the principal after all.
-I thought you need to report to the board meeting instead of expelling us out of the blue.
-I don't need the board meeting to do that. You threatened Mr. Kamoshida.
-And that's enough reason to expel us. The word of a teacher.
-Is it. You have a criminal record after all.
-I'm sorry, but you can't. Without evidence, you can't do that. I'm pressing charges against you two and I really hope you two have excellent lawyers to help out on this case.
-We will not bend against your feeble threat.
-That's not a feeble threat. I claim the right to defend myself and my colleagues.
-Or what? You have no right here.
-Are you sure? — Ren asked.
Kobayakawa stared at Ren and smiled.
-Unlike you think you have a criminal record; you have no right here.
-That we'll see. Officer, please call Prosecutor Sokuzen.
-Okay.
The officer called the prosecutor and after twenty minutes, Prosecutor Sokuzen arrived at the Shujin Academy.
-Good morning, I'm Prosecutor Sokuzen. What can I do for you?
-I'm Principal Kobayakawa, nice to meet you.
-Same.
-Please tell Mr. Amamiya he can't sue us.
-Why?
-He possesses a criminal record and he has no right to defend himself.
Sokuzen glanced at him.
-You mean the same criminal record everyone in this school has knowledge about, and not only that, I heard he and his friends also received a threat of being expelled without any plausible reason?
-What…?
-Mr. Amamiya came to me to request my assistance. Unlike you two, I can see how his situation is clearly unfair. — Sokuzen turned in Kamoshida's direction. — You are Mr. Kamoshida, correct? Do you have any evidence Mr. Amamiya, or Mr. Sakamoto, or Mr. Mishima threatened you?
Kamoshida looked away nervously.
-Uh… no, but…
-So, do you don't possess any evidence against my client? That means it's your own word against my client. Due to his situation, his condition should be kept secret for his integrity. However, it seems like every single student of this school knows.
-What?
-Due to this situation, I will press charges against this school. I do hope this school still works after I'm done with you two and with this place. Now if you excuse me, Mr. Amamiya I need to discuss with you the details of the legal process. — Sokuzen said ready to exit the room.
-Okay. Please, excuse me.
Sokuzen opened the door and went outside, being followed by Ren.
-Wait!
Sokuzen and Ren turned to Kobayakawa's direction.
-Please, we don't need to go that far to deal with this situation. How can we solve this?
Sokuzen lifted his eyebrow.
-Are you trying to bribe a law officer?
-No, I…
-Actually Mr. Sokuzen, I have a proposal.
-Do you? — Sokuzen asked.
-Do you? — Kobayakawa and Kamoshida asked with some suspicion.
-Yes, I have. Actually… Prosecutor Sokuzen, first of all, I came to you to ask for help. And honestly, I have nothing to hide. Yes, I have a criminal record, however, I've done nothing to get expelled. All I want is for the right to defend myself and my colleagues.
-True. You said that to me.
-So, why don't we solve this in court?
-What? — The three men asked.
-I mean, I want to defend myself and my colleagues in court. Isn't that impossible, isn't it?
-Well, no. But…
-Why do you want to defend yourself in court? I mean, you have a criminal record. That will be prejudicial for you. — Kamoshida pointed, interrupting Sokuzen.
-I know that, but as I said I have nothing to hide. So why don't we do that? Unless you two have something against it. Besides, I'm the one who will be harmed in the process, so why not?
-And what about Mr. Sakura? Did he agree with this? — Kawakami asked.
-He already knew. He wasn't happy to know about that. — Ren explained. — However, I managed to convince him to do that. It wasn't an easy task though. — Ren sighed.
-But Mr. Amamiya.
-Mr. Sokuzen, I'm the one being accused. I demand the right to defend myself. Is that too much to ask?
Sokuzen sighed.
-No, isn't. — Sokuzen glanced at Kamoshida and Kobayakawa. — Honestly, if I were you two, I would accept this proposal. Isn't every single day a person like Mr. Amamiya is inclined to solve things this way.
-And honestly, that's a chance of a lifetime? So, why not accept it? I have nothing to hide, what about you two?
