Ren walked alongside Morgana, Ryuji, and Ann towards their entrance. Then Ren saw Justine waiting for him.
-You guys go first. I need to check it up on something. — He said.
-Okay.
Ren went to Justine and she opened the Velvet Door.
-Our master would like a word with you. — Justine said, opening the way to him. — Come in.
-Very well. — Ren said as we went into the Velvet Room.
—
Velvet Room.
After School.
—
-Welcome to my Velvet Room. So, you've come. — Igor said impressed to see Ren.
-Well, I heard you wanted to talk to me, so I came. — Ren replied calmly as ever. Igor chuckled.
-I see… Your rehabilitation seems to be going smoothly.
-Thanks to you. Without your aid, it might be tough for me.
-Excellent. I've prepared a special gift for you. I must reward such exemplary conduct. — Igor extended his hand and Ren felt his power growing even more. — Use it well…
"He did something to me again… Now I can see a Persona's traits before I interact with them. It'll be very useful in my mission." Ren thought while checking his new power.
-Our master is extending incredible kindness. Shed tears of joy, Inmate. — Caroline said annoyed.
"All of that makes me wonder why he helps me so much… What motive does this man have for me…?" Ren thought.
-Hey, Inmate! Don't slack off! — Caroline called, hitting the cell door. — Don't keep yourself lost in thoughts, got it?
-Got it. — Ren promptly replied, snapping out of his thoughts. "Better not get distracted. That's not important for now." He thought.
-It seems you've gotten used to coming here. You must surely be accustomed to infiltrating Palaces now?
-You could say that. — Ren replied.
-Excellent Regardless, you have yet to obtain a truly acceptable number of Personas in order to archive your rehabilitation. This is not the full potential of the power of the Wild Card.
-I see…
-Hm, I suppose this is a prime opportunity to help further your rehabilitation along.
-What is it? — Ren asked.
-Do not worry about it… This assignment is not mandatory. Think of it as a test of strength.
-An assignment… Okay, what is this assignment? — Ren asked. The twins turned to Ren, showing him a clipboard.
-We will have to bring us the mask we specify. — Justine said, showing the list.
-You just gotta show us the Persona we asked for! — Caroline said.
-I see. It's your task then. So what kind of Persona do I need to bring? — Ren asked.
-First off… we would like for you to bring us a Jack Frost. — Justine replied.
-That's too easy, Justine! It should be a challenge. — Caroline said with a smile. — Well, let's see… I want it to have Mabufu too! You got that, Inmate? Bring us a Jack Frost with Mabufu.
-A Jack Frost with the Mabufu skill, huh? Consider it done. — Ren said determinately.
-Very well. We ask for a Jack Frost with Mabufu. Please speak to us again when you have it. — Justine said, serene as always.
-I will.
-Excellent. This will not be mandatory for your rehabilitation, but you will be handsomely rewarded for it. — Igor said, smiling. — I encourage you to at least try your hand at this.
-I will. Well then, I should…
-Hm?
-That Persona… Inmate! Hey, sit right there!
Ren did as the wardens ordered and sat in front of the cell door.
-Yes? Is there something wrong? — He asked.
-No. Actually, it seems like you have brought the specified Persona we asked for. — Justine replied stoically as always.
-Is that so…? So, here. — Ren said, giving Jack Frost to the twins.
-Hmph… Fine, I'll take it. — Caroline said, annoyed, then she smiled. — By the way, your Personas are super weak—not that I'm surprised, Inmate.
"She's not humble." Ren thought with disappointment.
-Though I guess you deserve at least some praise for finishing your penal labor. You might actually complete your rehabilitation… — Caroline said, slightly excited.
-In order to promote that process, we would like to offer you the use of a new facility. — Justine said with a smile.
-Hmph. It's rare to see you smile, Justine. — Caroline commented mockingly.
-You are the smiling one, Caroline. Did something happen to make you so joyful? — Justine retorted stoically.
-Me? — Caroline asked surprised, and Ren gave a light smirk. — Hey, are you laughing at us!?
-No. Actually, you have a cute smile. — Ren replied earnestly. "Damn, I wish I could record this."
Caroline hit the cell door angrily and stomped the ground irritated.
-Know your place, Inmate.
That was enough to make Ren give a livid laugh.
-What's so funny, Inmate.
-I'm sorry, you two are so cute I couldn't help but smile and even laugh a little for you. — Ren explained. — I'm sorry, once again.
-Is that a reason for you to laugh?
-Well.
-You should know, as wardens, we simply feel satisfaction in seeing your rehabilitation progress. That is the extent of it. I find it upsetting that you would see such a matter as a source of amusement— Justine said disappointed.
-It's like you forget where you are, Inmate. — Caroline replied angrily.
-Yes, I do know. — Ren replied stoically. — However, I didn't do it out of maliciousness I promise. It's just you two are so cute, it's quite hard to keep myself serious sometimes.
-W-What!? Sh-Shut up, Inmate! — Caroline replied, hitting the door once again.
Ren laughed again.
-Sorry, I couldn't resist.
-Hmph! You've got some real guts though! With that spirit, you should have no trouble making progress!
-That is what I'm planning.
-Very well then, if you have the will to continue your penal labor, we can grant you greater freedom within this courthouse/prison. It is a deal between us, the wardens, and you, the defendant/inmate.
-Not like you have the right to turn it down though! Hard work is what you're meant to do, Inmate.
Ren laughed again and nodded in agreement.
-Very well, we have ourselves a deal.
"I've made a deal with Caroline and Justine. There's no turning back."
I am thou, thou art I…
Thou hast acquired a new vow.
It shall become the wings of rebellion
That breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Strength Persona,
I have obtained the winds of blessing that
Shall lead to freedom and new power…
Ren felt his power grow as his bond with the twins was born. Ren only smiled in amusement as he felt his power becoming bigger.
"I have gained new confidant. This will be very useful for me, and for the twins."
-Now, it's time for your next task! Justine! — Caroline said and Justine checked her clipboard.
-For the next task, we request Ame-no-Uzume with the skill Frei. — Justine said, checking the list. — Please come talk to us again once you have it.
-Got it.
-Just hurry up and finish the task at hand, Inmate! — Caroline said excitedly.
-Now you should go. If you have other business, you may tend to it now.
-All right.
Ren left the Velvet Room, returning straight to reality.

Metaverse. Madarame's Palace.
After School.
—
-Hey! Joker! Why're you standin' around for? — Morgana asked, coming in Ren's direction.
-I thought I saw something here. — Ren replied lamely. "He can't see the Velvet Room, I need to remember that."
-Get with the program, all right? You're a vital member of the team here!
-I know, I thought that might be important. Now, let's resume our infiltration.
Resuming their infiltration, they went towards the infiltration point and went back into the museum. Once inside, Ren noticed something had changed.
-Hold on, Joker!
-You don't need to say it twice. Looks like things have changed a little since the last time we came. — Ren said, noticing the infrared laser devices.
-It's an infrared laser device. If we touch it, the security will increase.
-Hold on, there wasn't anything like this last time though! — Ryuji exclaimed.
-It wasn't activated. — Ren corrected. — The devices were here, inactivated until now. It seems the rumors about us are slowly making Madarame warier of us.
-I do agree. Now we need to be extra careful while exploring this Palace. They're not easy to see, but you should be able to avoid them with your skills. — Morgana said.
-Got it. Follow me and do the same thing as me. Let's explore this Palace. — Ren said, taking the lead.
Wandering around, Ren went forward, avoiding the infrared laser detectors, as the same time he went into the other area. As long as the thieves proceed, they fought against the Shadows who were securing the place. After defeating them, the thieves went to the area where they had found the golden statue of Madarame. There, Ren checked the map, to check his location and see where we should go.
-Hey, we'll be in unknown territory once we go past here, right? — Ann asked.
-Right. That also means the security will probably get a little more fierce as well. — Morgana said as he checked the map as well.
-That means we'll need to be careful while exploring. Seeing the infrared laser devices are active means this is only the beginning. Let's proceed carefully and avoid touching and running into anything. We don't know what we'll find. — Ren said.
-Hey! What're you lookin' at me for? — Ryuji asked, irritated at Morgana.
Rushing through the stairs, they went into a new area that resembles a labyrinth. During their exploration, they found a safe room. Taking note of the location, they went back to exploration and started to fight against the Shadows in the place, defeating them and becoming more and more stronger. Going to the upper floor, they reached the security room. Ren saw the lock and pressed the button, however, nothing happened.
-Dammit! It ain't openin'! — Ryuji exclaimed, annoyed.
-Let's keep looking around.
Going to another room, Ren finds it odd the lack of security of that area, also a sole golden sheen was resting on the center of the room. Checking the map once again, Ren saw Morgana approaching the sheen.
-Hey… Look at that luster…
-Mona, wait a moment! — Ren warned as he took a step away.
-We should take it with us. I know it might be tough to take with us, but don't you think it'd sell for tons?
-We should leave it be. It might— Mona!
Morgana jumped on the pedestal and grabbed the golden sheen.
-Hey, hold on! You're steppin' on something! — Ryuji noted, taking a step away.
-Isn't that bad? — Ann asked, stepping away too.
-Everyone! Be still and step back carefully. Now!
Ren stunts away, dodging on the last moment the laser grid that appeared, trapping the other thieves in the process.
-Oh no! I tripped the security! — Morgana exclaimed.
-Urgh, and you were the one makin' us be careful too… So whaddya wanna do? Run outta here? — Ryuji asked.
-No, passing through all these lasers will draw far too many enemies to our location!
Ren checked the map and used the Vision of Truth to analyze the area.
-Hey, Joker, you're not trapped! — Ann said. — Can you do anything about it?
-I'm checking the area for something which can turn off this laser trap. Until then, be still.
Ren searched over the room and fought against one Shadow who was protecting the place. After defeating the guard who was protecting the place, Ren saw a panel with a red button displayed.
"There's a button there. Maybe it can deactivate some of the lasers, or summon reinforcements to beat me down. Well, there's one way to find out."
Ren pressed the button and he heard an electrical buzz. Looking back at the laser trap, one of the glass walls came down, freeing Ann.
-Yes! — Ann exclaimed, exiting the laser cell.
-All right! Panther's free! Great work, Joker. — Morgana exclaimed.
-I'm not done yet. There's still work to do. Panther are you alright?
-Yes. Thanks by the way. Now we need to free Skull and Mona.
Ren nodded and went back to his search, Ren looked around using the Vision of Truth skill to look for anything suspicious. Looking at one of the paintings, he noticed that the painting was not aligned like the others. Using the Vision of Truth skill, he also noticed a blue aura around it. Carefully taking the painting off from the wall, he saw another panel.
-Huh, I would've never imagined there was a button behind the painting. — Ann commented.
-That's too obvious. Be ready for anything, Panther.
-Alright, Joker.
Ren pressed the button and the curtain on the side raised as the glass wall came down, freeing Ryuji.
-Ohh, good job! — Ryuji said.
-You did it! — Ann exclaimed happily. — Now then, let's hurry up and get back together with him.
-Let's.
Ren went in Ryuji's direction and looked at Morgana.
-Just wait a little longer Mona, we'll find a way to free you.
-Okay. — Morgana said, keeping his poise.
-Skull, are you alright? — Ren asked Ryuji.
-Yeah, sorry 'bout that. — Ryuji answered.
-It's okay. It happens.
-Now we just gotta get Mona out of there. — Ryuji said excitedly.
-But how? The only way is to turn the lasers off. — Ann said a bit down.
-There has to be a control room for them! I don't know if it's nearby though.
-I know where it is. However, it's locked. — Ren said. — Don't worry, we'll find a way. Stand there, Mona.
A few guards appeared and the thieves hid behind one of the walls. After they managed to defeat them, Ren and the others went back to explore the room.
-Our way is blocked. Let's search for another way.
Searching the area, Ren found an air vent and went in. Crawling into the ducts, they went into the security room
-Man, I can't believe you found a path like this… — Ryuji commented.
-I do agree. Luckily, we went directly into the security room. — Ren said, going to one of the computers. — Here, I found the computer which controls the lasers.
-Nice! But wait…
-It looks like we need a password to use it. — Ann commented.
-A password… Let's get out of here and search for clues. — Ren said.
-Uh, they probably ain't gonna just leave it lyin' around. — Ryuji commented.
-Then what are we supposed to do…? Look for someone who might know it?
-Good idea, Panther. Well, better look for the Shadows and eavesdrop on their conversation. They might know something. — Ren said.
-Got it. — Ryuji and Ann said.
Exiting the room, they walked around until they found two Shadows talking to each other. Ren and the other hid behind the wall, eavesdropping on their conversation.
-Hey, did you hear about those intruders?
-Yeah, you mean the thieves sneaking around in here? I got a call telling me to change the password, just in case.
-And? What did you change it to?
-Hello.
-Huh?
-I said hello. 07734. If you read the numbers upside-down, they spell out the world hello. — The guard explained.
-…Isn't that a little childish? — Asked the other Shadow.
-Eh, it should be fine as long as nobody else finds out. It's not like anyone's eavesdropping on us. Anyway, don't forget: when you see the code input, be sure to say hello.
The Shadows went back to their shift and Ren looked to Ryuji and Ann who were grinning.
-Did you hear that? — Ann asked happily.
-Sure did. C'mon Joker, let's go say hello to that terminal thing!
-Let's.
Going back to the security room, Ren accessed the terminal and inserted the password. An electronic bip was heard and the lasers were turned off, freeing Morgana. Ren and the others rushed back to the supernatural cat, who was waiting for them.
-I-I'm sorry… That was very much unlike me. — Morgana said.
-Sheesh… Weren't you the one tellin' us not to go around touchin' shit in the exhibit? — Ryuji complained.
-Urgh, that is true… — Morgana admitted. — I can't believe I made such a novice mistake, even for solid gold.
-It's okay, just be careful next time. — Ren said. — Still, it's odd to have so much security in a place like this.
-That is true. Something was drawing me to this vase, but I don't know why…
-What do you guys mean? Isn't it just an ordinary gold vase?
-If it was, why so much security to protect it? Let's take a closer look.
Ren examined the golden vase and noticed it was a breakable object. Destroying the vase, to his surprise a floating blood color diamond appeared and started to wander around.
-What is it? — Ann asked.
-Oh, I see… So that's why I was drawn to it! — Morgana exclaimed.
-Do you know what this is? — Ren asked.
-Yes. Joker, catch it! I'll explain the rest later. Just get after it and attack!
Ren struck the diamond object, and to his and Ryuji and Ann's surprise, it was revealed to be a Shadow.
"Oddly, I don't recognize this one. It's different from the others."
Ren struck again the odd Shadow and noticed his physical attacks were inefficient against it. Ordering to use elemental attack, the thieves attacked with their all, using their Personas against it. After several attacks, the Shadow used a light skill to blind them and used that to run away.
-Ah… it got away…
-What was that…? — Ann asked.
-Glad you asked. That Panther was a rare Shadow that occasionally resides in pricey items. I call them Treasure Demons. They're great. Not only do they give you a lot of experience, but they might also be useful to your Personas too. However, they run very fast, and attacks don't deal very much damage to them. — Morgana explained.
"What a cute name…" Ren thought sardonically. "Morgana mentioned something interesting about those rare Shadows. "They might be useful". The question is how they're useful? Perhaps via fusion? Better get information later."
-I see… Very well, we should keep going.
Going even deeper into the museum, the thieves went into a room with a painting on the floor of a cliff.
-Whoa! The hell!? How're supposed to get past this huge hole in the—
-Calm down. Pay attention… — Morgana pointed to the guard walking on the floor. — Look at the security guard walking…
-Be quiet you two. It's within range… — Ren said, jumping on the guard and ripping off his mask, revealing the Shadow's true form. After defeating the Shadow they went back into his infiltration, exiting the room and going into the corridor. Ren noticed a lounge and went into it, went into the restrooms, and took the treasures inside. Back to infiltration, they reached another hall. Then before they could go further, an electric barrier raised up, blocking their way.
-Intruders in the Second Exhibit Room! Apprehend at once!
Several Shadows appeared and the thieves hid behind one of the columns.
-Crap! We need to get outta here, fast! Which way's the exit? — Ryuji asked.
Ren noticed the columns and a second floor.
-First, we need to get rid of those Shadows. Follow me.
Dealing with the Shadows, the Phantom Thieves defeated them one by one. After that, Ren looked around and found a small column he could climb. Climbing right away, he jumped column to column reaching the upper area with his grappling hook. Reaching the upper area, Ren saw a door, however, the door was locked.
-Dammit! — Ren said. Looking around he saw another button. Pressing the button, the electrical trap deactivated, freeing the access to another area. Rushing toward the new path, the thieves went to the upper floor and fought against a strong Shadow and won. There, they find the door which was blocked and Ren pressed the button, gaining access to the previous room. Seeing a suspended platform, he used the grappling hook to reach the area and walked to the blocked room on the other side. There Ren and the others saw an isolated room.
-One of the Will Seeds is here! — Ren exclaimed.
-You know the drill, let's take it! — Morgana said.
Taking the Will Seed, Ren saw a Treasure and took it, after that he went back to the previous room and went back to the infiltration. Going to another corridor, Morgana felt another gap in cognition.
-The cognition here is weak… There may be a safe room nearby.
-Let's go there.
-Wait, hold on, Joker! Don't you think that shiny buildin' over there's kinda suspicious? — Ryuji said pointing to the building on the other side. Ren look the building and started to analyze the building.
-Let's check it out.
The thieves went to the building and they saw a giant golden building with several empty canvases over the place. A beautifully drawn door was blocking the access to the area. Ren whistled and looked at the place, truly impressed.
-Wow… — That was the black-dressed thief's only comment.
-Whoa… It's even gaudier than the rest of the museum… — Ann commented, impressed as well.
-It definitely looks like something important would be hidden away in there… — Morgana said seriously.
-Let's find out! — Ryuji said excitedly.
-Let's. — Ren said.
Ren went to the door and several doors opened, revealing a garden to the building.
-Whoa! It really opened up! — Ryuji commented.
-Let's see if the area keeps the path open as well.
Going to the other side, Ren, Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana saw the path blocked by several electric barriers and a gaudy decorated drawn door. Ren checked the area for an opening.
-Whoa! The hell!? — Ryuji exclaimed.
-As I thought, the path to this area is blocked. I doubted that was going to be easy, but it's kinda annoying to deal with it. — Ren said, pinching the bridge of his nose.
-Are those… infrared lasers? There's no way to get past them… — Ann said, surprised by the several lasers over the path.
-This level of security only proves there's something worth protecting up ahead.
-Perhaps the Treasure is there. — Ren said thoughtfully. — But why so much security on that path?
-Wait, there's a sign there. There's something written on it. — She said and read the sign. — "All personal: this door can only be opened via the security room that lies beyond it. Please be cautious, as it is impossible to open from the outside."
-So, it's never gonna open!? How're we supposed to get past!? — Ryuji asked.
-Wait… That door… I think I've seen that pattern somewhere…
-Did you? — Ren asked, seeing the painting on the doors.
-Yes. There's no mistaking it! That's the same door I saw earlier! It was locked in the real world.
-A locked door on Madarame shack, huh… — Ren said thoughtfully. — There's only one way. Opening from inside. — Ren said determinately.
-Exactly, Joker. Guys, let's head back!
-Huh, why!? — Ryuji asked, confused.
-I think I know what the real-world door that's based on. There may be another way to open it!
-We'll explain later. For now, let's head back. — Ren said. — Let's go to the safe room and go back home.
-For real!?
-For real, Skull. Let's head back.
Going back to the entrance, Ren looked at the Velvet Room entrance and went back in. After fusing some Personas he went back to the real world with the others.
—
Real World. Shibuya District.
Madarame's Shack.
After School
—
-Okay Mona, what's the plan? — Ren asked.
Standing in front of Madarame's shack, Ren looked around, seeing if anyone saw them come back from the Metaverse. Ann stared at the art studio and turned at Ren, Ryuji, and Morgana.
-How're you supposed to get past that door? — The quarter-half American girl asked.
-I dunno… Do you think there's some kinda off switch somewhere? — Ryuji asked.
-Looks like this is where I come in!
-Mona? — Ann exclaimed surprised.
-I have a suspicious place in mind.
-The locked door you find during your exploration in Madarame's shack. — Ren said, remembering Morgana's comment in the Madarame's Palace.
-Exactly. The shack is the basis for Madarame's Palace. I actually scouted it out the last time we were here, and as Ren remembered, I saw the same door in the real world.
-Whoa… So this was your plan from the start? — Ryuji asked surprised.
-Correct.
-Mona, don't lie. — Ren said, shaking his head in disappointment.
-Yeah… you only went "scouting" because you were bored. — Ann said disappointed as well.
-So? Where's this suspicious place? — Ryuji asked.
-It's on the second floor. I noticed an unnaturally hefty lock on the door up there.
-If it's locked, that means there's something in there he doesn't want people to see.
-Perhaps something that compromises him badly. — Ren commented.
-But don't we wanna be openin' the door in the Palace? — Ryuji asked.
-Yes, and we're going to do that by opening the real one in front of Madarame's eyes.
-Simply changing his cognition of that door is unopenable.
-Exactly. I'm glad you catch up on things quickly, Ren.
-In other words… When we open the one in Madarame's house, that area in his Palace will open on its own? — Ann asked surprised.
-Correct. Shattering his expectations will allow us to go further into his Palace. — Ren said.
-I'm not gettin' it… Is that gonna work? — Ryuji asked.
-Trust me! There's no chance it won't open… I think… Do you understand, won't you Joker? — Morgana asked.
-Yes, I do understand how that works, we should try. — Ren replied.
-Well yeah, but… — Ryuji tried to argue.
-Why don't you trust me!? It's worth a try! — Morgana yelled furiously.
-Calm down, Mona. It's worth a try, but you're forgetting something. — Ren said.
-Yeah. But even then, there's still that hefty lock we have to deal with in reality, right? — Ann said.
-Oh, that'll be a breeze. Just give me a hairpin and I'll handle it. It will take some time though. Doing everything by myself in front of Madarame would be impossible. If only there was someone who could distract him for a while… — Morgana replied.
-That's the problem, how we could get in without being arrested. After all, we're going to get reported for sure if we force ourselves in, by Kitagawa-san, so… — Ren said.
-Oh… Ohhh! — Ryuji said with a huge smile, looking at Ann. — Ren's right. Man, how are we even gonna get into his house? We'd get reported for sure if we forced ourselves in…
-What? — Ann asked irritated. — What do you…?
-I guess the only way is… havin' you go nude.
-WHAT!? — Ann exclaimed surprised.
-I'm sorry Ann, but we don't have a choice here. You have to sacrifice for us on this one, so yeah… — Ren said toying with a lock of his hair.
-Fancy you say that, Ryuji and Ren. I was just thinking the same thing. — Morgana said.
-Not you too Morgana! This isn't funny! — Ann retorted furiously.
-We're not joking Ann. — Ren said with a serious frown.
-We're not sayin' you really should really get naked. — Ryuji added.
-It's simply the best excuse for you to enter Madarame's house without raising suspicions. — Morgana said.
-Plus, you only need to distract Kitagawa-san for enough time for Morgana to unlock the door. You only need to accept his offer and get in. You'll need to get to act as our decoy. The rest is up to you. — Ren said.
-Exactly. As our decoy, we'll only need to get in. Just that. — Morgana said.
-This is way too sudden… — Ann said. — I mean, I don't even know where the locked door is.
-Don't worry, I'll accompany you.
-But that is still technically only me…
-You only need to put Morgana into your bag and he'll do the rest. — Ren said.
-Still. Worst comes to worst, what if I get found out? — Ann asked desperately.
-We can run into the Palace! …Or something? — Morgana replied unsurely.
-Is that really gonna work!? I mean, you're not giving me much confidence in this plan!
-Ann… Calm down. Breathe, okay? — Ren said.
-Okay. But seriously, Do I have to be the bait?
-Unfortunately yes, you have to, there's no other way. Good luck. — Ren replied.
-But… what if, you know? Uhh! Um… Nothing. — Ann said, defeated.
-Well… I don't have a proper answer for that. — Ren admitted. — But I'm sure you can do it.
-Yeah. Just relax, okay? All you gotta do is trick Yusuke, have him take you to that room, then just open the door. Easy, — Ryuji said carefree, with a huge grin on his face.
-You make it sound so easy! — Ann rebutted.
-Technically for you to get in will be. The hard part will be unlocking the door. — Ren said.
-That's true. But if there's no other way… I don't… I don't have a choice… Urgh! God! Fine, I'll do it! For Justice! Seriously, you better pull this off! — Ann said furiously.
-If it's for your sake Lady Ann, I won't stop scratching even if my claws were to break! — Morgana assured.
-We're counting on you, Morgana! Don't let Yusuke notice ya, all right? — Ryuji said.
-Please. We'll need you to unlock that door. — Ren said.
-If he tries to force my clothes off… I'll tear that house down. I'm really gonna lose it if we do all this and the Palace door doesn't open. Got it!? — Ann exclaimed furiously.
-I'm sure you will. — Ren and Ryuji said with a wide grin.
-We're workin' to get dirt on that guy's crimes either way. It won't go to waste. — Ryuji said excitedly.
-True. So tomorrow? — Ren asked.
-All right, let's get down and dirty tomorrow. — Ryuji said excitedly.
-Tomorrow!?
-Early the better.
-Besides, we don't have time to waste. — Ren said.
-U-Uh… I don't know… Will Kitagawa-kun agree? — Ann asked.
-I dunno. Say something like "I really need it to be tomorrow.". That should work, yeah? — Ryuji said, unsure as well.
-Oh, no. — Ann said, shaking her head. Ren only laughed.
—
Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
-I'm pretty exhausted from going to Metaverse. Let's just take it easy here instead of going out. — Morgana said tiredly. — Leave this to me. I'll get opened right before his very eyes.
Ren only nodded his head in affirmation and went upstairs. Hearing his phone ringing, Ren saw a message from the Thieves chat group.
You get in touch with Yusuke? — Ryuji asked.
Mm-hm. He asked me to come by tomorrow. — Ann replied.
Awwww yeah, he fell for it!
Yeah. Uh, do I… really have to do this?
Unfortunately, yes. Just be careful out there. — Ren replied.
Yeah… — Ann said unsure.
"Better not joke this time. As much as I want to tease Ann, this is a serious matter." Ren thought. "Yusuke really affected Ann in a bad way. Why did I make such a proposal? I know Ann's a beauty, but that's kinda extreme…"
Man, this is such a pain. We gotta open the door AND have Madarame see it, right? — Ryuji asked.
Correct. — Ren texted.
Yeah. Morgana said that'll change his cognition. — Ann said.
I don't get it… Oh and one more thing. Let us know if any weird shit goes down and we'll be there to back you up ASAP. — Ryuji texted.
Yeah, let us know and I'll sue him ASAP.
Kk, got it. — Ann said.
-A Palace is a reflection of how its owner views the real world. So if Madarame's cognition of his reality changes, it's only natural that his Palace would be affected.
-Obviously. Since cognition is made by the point of view of a person about the world he lives in. Still, we'll need Ann to do some striptease in order to achieve our goal. So, eager to see your beloved nude? — Ren teased Morgana.
-Perhaps. And all jokes aside, we really will need Lady Ann to strip for Yusuke. It's the only way.
-You're right, unfortunately. Well, I'll go downstairs and do a few crosswords and I'll brew some coffee before going to sleep.
-Okay. I'll be waiting for you here.

May, 19. Thursday.
Shibuya Station.
Early Morning.
—
-So, it's you.
Ren saw Yusuke coming in his direction and Ren simply turned at him.
-You did use this line, now that I think about it…
-What are you gonna do? Denounce me from using public transportation? — Ren asked in an acid tone.
-No, I'm not. I'm here to ask you something. —Yusuke replied, then asked. — Anyhow, what's with this sudden change in attitude?
-What are you talking about?
-I was contacted by Takamaki-san last night. She's accepted the nude modeling proposition. That's nice of course… but I hope you aren't conspiring anything.
-Once again, what are you talking about? I didn't know about that until now.
-I see…
-Then again, the same goes for you. Try anything funny with her, and we'll have a word with you.
-Hmph. Do not make a mockery of the art. Don't judge us by your worldly standards. I'll call the police if you try anything. Remember that.
-I saw people using the same excuse before. I'll sue you if you try anything funny as well.
-Is that so? We'll see—
-Listen up. I do have proof of your shady proposal. Test my patience and I'll show you art is the last thing you'll need to worry about it. Trust me, I don't have anything against you, Kitagawa-san, but if you force me, I can show you how dangerous I can be.
-Hmph. You are sure of yourself. The warning remains.
-The same extends to you.

-Ann, Morgana, we're countin' on you. — Ryuji said determinately. — Me and Ren're banned from goin' there, so all we can do is wait here.
-No, Ryuji, we'll be at the Palace. We'll be at the other side, waiting for you two to unlock the door and come back. — Ren said. — If anything happens, rush straight to the Palace, no matter what.
-Ren's right. I'm surprised you remembered our plan. — Morgana said proudly.
-Well, I do pay attention. Besides, someone needs to get into the security room, remember?
-Whaddya guys mean? — Ryuji asked, confused. — Security room?
-You two have to wait inside the Palace. Once the door opens, sneak in and look for some kind of control room. We need to make sure the door won't close anymore after it's open. — Morgana said.
-That's why we'll go after them. — Ren said.
-Ohhh, I get it. Mkay, you can leave that to us! — Ryuji said excitedly.
-Ryuji, focus. We can't screw this time. We have only one chance to keep the door open. — Ren said seriously.
-Got it. — Ryuji said determinately.
-Ann and Morgana first. We'll go after them, taking some distance to avoid calling Yusuke's attention.
-Okay then, let's go.
-By the way, before we go, I have something to do. — Ann said.
—
Madarame's Atelier.
After School.
—
-To think you really came… I assumed you were lying to me when you contacted me.
-I'm sorry it was so sudden.
-Oh, it's not a problem. But as I told you yesterday, Sensei will be returning in about twenty or thirty minutes. So, uh… I'm sorry if that causes some anxiety on your part.
-That's why I'm here today, dammit. — Ann muttered to herself.
-What was that?
-Oh no it was nothing!
-I see. By the way… Did you gain some weight? — Yusuke asked, surprised. Ann was wearing several pieces of clothes.
-You think so? I weigh the same as always… Maybe I'm bloated today.
-So then… Can you… get ready here? — Yusuke asked nervously.
-I… need to take my clothes off, right? — Ann asked nervously as well.
-Y-Yes, please. — Yusuke said, averting his eyes from Ann.
-I'm embarrassed. Could you look the other way?
Yusuke did as Ann asked and she started to take off the clothes to Yusuke's surprise.
-Phew, that was tight…
-Tight…? — Yusuke asked, genuinely curious, then he shook his head in negative. — No, I'm doing this for art!
-Don't look over here, okay? — Ann said, taking another piece of cloth. — Hey, your sensei's coming back soon, right? — She asked.
-I believe so… — Yusuke replied bitterly.
-Do you think we could do this somewhere else then? A little more atmosphere would be lovely…
-This should be good enough.
-But wouldn't a room with a lock be a bit better? — Ann asked.
-A lock?
-Must a girl say more? — Ann teased as she threw another piece of cloth.
-Wha!? But the only one with a lock is… Sensei's room…
-Then, why not there?
-I can't intrude… Besides, I don't have the key.
-He says he doesn't have the key. — Ann whispered to Mona.
-It's okay, that's why I'm here! I'll just have this hairpin… — The supernatural replied.
-Takamaki-san, what are you about— You were wearing all this? — Yusuke asked surprised after turning back at Ann and seeing the pile of clothes over the floor.
-D-Don't you think it's cold today? — Ann asked nervously, dodging the question.
-I suppose so? The sun is starting to set. — Yusuke commented.
-Riiight? That's why a nice change of location would be nice… I mean, I'm gonna take it all off.
-True… It might make for a better picture if I can brighten my model's mood…
-Uh-huh! That's right!
-She may even be willing to try out various expressive poses for use in a dynamic composition…
-Wh-What kind of poses!?
-Lady Ann! You have to act! Get back into the character! — Morgana whispered.
-Let's go… I was just starting to get in the mood. — Ann said exiting the room and Yusuke stood stunned and speechless at her reaction.
-Wait! If you wander around, Sensei will…
-Uhhh… It's so hot… — Ann said, throwing her blazer on the floor.
-W-We really can't use any other room… — Yusuke said, going after her.
-Hey, why not this one?
-H-Hey, wait! — Yusuke said, picking up the piece of cloth and closing the room door.
-I'm counting on you, Mona.

Ren and Ryuji were waiting in the Central Garden to Morgana open the door. Ren adjusted his gloves as he waited.
-They seriously gonna be able to pull this off? — Ryuji asked worriedly, then he commented. — She was sayin' stuff like, "I'll just seduce him with my acting", but that sounds out of her league. Plus we ain't got one sign this place is gonna open… Isn't Madarame coming home soon?
-They'll have to, or we'll never get past through this door. And yes, he's coming home soon, and we're counting on that, remember?
-True. On top of that, even if Mona's able to unlock the door, how's he gonna show it to Madarame.
-I'm sure he and Ann will find a way.
-Yeah, but then even if they do show that's opened, any normal person's just close it up right up again. Doesn't that mean we only got a few seconds to get in? To be blunt, won't it be a miracle if this works.
-You're learning, Skull, that's good. The point here is we're counting on Ann's acting skills, Mona's infiltration skills and with some luck to get this door open and make our path free. We're betting high here. If it works we'll have a short span of time to go straight to the security room and deactivate the security system to proceed. When this door opens, we'll have to rush straight inside this building, that's our objective here. So, we have to get ready independently for what'll happen. I'm sure it'll work, so have faith.
-I wanna think that too, but…
-Relax, I'm sure we can do it. Now focus.
-I know. — Ryuji said, turning at the door. — It's almost time.

Ann went towards the area Morgana was and Yusuke was following her. Wearing only a short, camouflage pink shirt, she turned to Yusuke with a huge smile.
-Please, can you just wait—
-What's past here?
-That's…
-So the door Mona mentioned is up ahead… — Ann muttered to herself.
-I keep telling you, you can't…
Ann went to the corner and saw Morgana still working on the lock.
-You're still not done!? — Ann muttered surprised to the human-to-be-cat.
-It's hard to do this… with cat paws! — Morgana replied as he tried to open the lock.
-It's something the matter? — Yusuke asked worriedly.
-Oh, ummmmm… So, what in this room? — Ann asked.
-It's a storage area for old paintings.
-Storage… — Ann said thoughtfully. — Hey, Kitagawa-kun… Why don't we… do it in here? — She asked seductively. — I won't be embarrassed if we go somewhere nobody can find us…
-Only Sensei can go there… — Yusuke rebutted, nervously to be there with Ann. — Please, can you—
-Pleeeease…? I wanna be alone with you. Somewhere like, quiet. You know, where we won't get interrupted.
-…Is he really going to buy this terrible act!? — Morgana exclaimed as he tried to unlock the door.
-Stay focused! — Ann ordered snapping at Morgana.
-Takamaki-san?
-Ohhh, it's so frustrating that my feelings aren't getting through to you! — She quickly replied, snapping back at Yusuke.
"She acts horribly." Morgana thought as he worked on the lock.
-Kitagawa-kun, don't you like girls like me? — Ann asked.
-N-No, that's not true… — Yusuke replied nervously.
-How is that working on him!? — Morgana exclaimed.
-Please… We can continue this… inside… — Ann said, seductively.
-S-Sure… No! I mean, no! We can't go in there! It's locked anyway, so… — Yusuke argued nervously,
-Fine! This is too embarrassing! I'm leaving!
-B-But…
-Let's just do it here! Okay!?
-What do I do…?
-I'm home. — Madarame announced.
-S-Sensei!? — Yusuke exclaimed.
-Yusuke?
Morgana took advantage of that distraction and managed to open the door.
-All right, it's open! — Morgana announced and went into the storage room.
Ann rushed inside and Yusuke looked surprised at Ann who was inside the storage room.
-H-How!? — Yusuke asked surprised, seeing the door unlocked.
-What are you doing there!?
To Yusuke and Ann's surprise, Madarame was standing outside, glancing daggers at both teenagers furiously.
-S-Sensei, i-it's… it's not what it looks like! — Yusuke tried to explain in vain, glancing between his mentor and Ann. Ann in a moment of irritation and desperation grabbed Yusuke and dragged him into the storage room.
-Wait! Not in there! — Madarame exclaimed as he saw the teenagers disappearing into the darkness of the room.

Metaverse. Madarame's Palace.
At the same time.
—
-Nothin's happenin'… I wonder what's—
Ryuji was interrupted by a sudden tremor and he and Ren saw the door being opened abruptly and the security system went off.
-…It's off! Can't believe it worked!
-There's our chance! Let's go! — Ren said, rushing towards the door.
-They seriously did it!
-Stay on your guard. They have done their part, now we need to make ours.
-Got it, leader!
-Still, they're amazing.
-Yeah, for real!
"I knew they could do it. Now we need to do our part as well." Ren thought went inside the place.
-Hate to say to ya, but it's just gonna be only us for a bit if we run into any enemies. You good…?
-We'll be fine for the time being, still we need to be careful.
-Got it. I'll be countin' on you!
-Yeah, me too.
Inside the building, both thieves saw a powerful Shadow protecting the area.
-Dammit! Already!? Hey, whaddya wanna do?
-We'll have to take him down! Let's go!
Ren jumped on the Shadow and grabbed his mask.
-Wha—
-I'll reveal your true form! — Ren said, ripping off the Shadow mask and revealing the Shadow's true form, becoming a giant yellow beast with a snake tail.
-Hate you to say that, but we're on our own. We gotta handle this with just the two of us. Are you sure we can handle it?
-We have to. We can't fail now. — Ren snapped his attention to the security guard Shadow. — Hey you! Let us pass through, or we'll have to take care of you.
-Who are you!?
-We are the Phantom Thieves of Hearts! Now, let us pass through! — Ryuji ordered.
-I see… I can see by your attire… You truly are the thieves who dare threaten Lord Madarame. I'll stop you! — The Shadow said, attacking both Ren and Ryuji dodged the slash attack of the Shadow. — How did they get past the security system!? — The Shadow asked.
-We have our ways! — Ren said, winking at the Shadow, dodging another attack. The Shadow attacked Ryuji, scratching his abdomen and stroking Ren, sending him flying away. Lucky, Ren managed to land without getting seriously hurt and Ryuji managed to avoid the last attack, only gaining a moderate hit.
-…You cannot go any further! You are trespassing Lord Madarame's territory!
-See if we care! You guys ain't got nothin' on us! — Ryuji retorted. — Captain Kidd! Zio!
-We'll have to go through, so the answer is no! Persona! Slime! Garu!
-Captain Kidd! Tarukaja! — Ryuji said, using the Tarukaja skill, increasing his strength.
Using their Personas to attack, Ren tried to attack using the Eiha skill, but the Shadow wasn't affected by the attack. Striking Ren with a physical skill, the Shadow took advantage and used the Maeiha skill to attack both thieves.
-Persona! Ame-no-Uzume! Media!
Using a recovery skill, Ren and Ryuji recovered some of their health and went back to the offensive, striking the Shadow with all their strength. The Shadow used the Maeiha skill once again and Ren used the Media skill again to recover from the dark /cursed elemental attacks.
-Captain Kidd! Zio!
Ryuji's electrical attack managed to stun the enemy. Ren took advantage, changed his Persona, and went back to attack.
-Persona! Kusi Mitama! Agi!
-The fire elemental attack killed the Shadow, unblocking their way.
-Phew, we did it! Man, things're tough when it's just me and you… — Ryuji commented tiredly. — Dammit! That hurts!
-Leave it to me. Persona! Ame-no-Uzume! Media!
Using the Media skill, Ren and Ryuji recovered from their wounds. After that, Ren panted from exhaustion, holding on to his knees to stand on.
-Are you all right?
-Yes, I am. Just tired like you. Darn, I hate to admit, but it'll be nice if we had more manpower to compensate for our actual lack of members.
-True. It'd be a pain in the ass if we got spotted again. Anyways, let's turn off the security system.
-Let's. Actually, I spotted the security room. Let's go. — Ren said went towards the security room.
—
Real World. Madarame's Atelier.
At the same time.
—
-Takamaki-san, this is bad! — Yusuke muttered nervously.
-Are these the lights? — Ann asked.
The lights went on and to Yusuke and Ann's shock, there were several paintings of Sayuri, alongside the old paintings stored in the room.
-What the…!?
-…Isn't this "Sayuri"? — Ann asked. — Why are there so many of them?
-I have no idea…
-Get out! — Madarame ordered harshly.
-Sensei, what is the meaning of this? — Yusuke asked perplexedly, seeing the several "Sayuri" over the room.
-I suppose I can't keep it quiet now that you've seen this. — Madarame said with a sorrowful expression on his face. — True to be told… I'm severely in debt. I handmade these "Sayuri" copies and have been selling them through a special connection of mine…
-But why…?
-The real "Sayuri"… was stolen by one of my pupils long ago. I assume they begrudged my strictness… That moment was quite a shock for me… Since then, I've been mired in a terrible artist's block… Because of this distress, some of my pupils handed over to me their ideas from time to time…
Ann stood quiet, thinking about it. Madarame continued his explanation.
-I knew I couldn't keep that up, so I attempted to recreate the "Sayuri" a number of times. However, that resulted in nothing more but mere replicas… That's why when someone came to buy the paintings, knowing well they weren't the original… — Madarame sighed. — It's all my fault. I couldn't pay the price of being famous. As expectations for me rose, it reached a point where I had no choice but to keep making them… I needed the money to further your talents… — Madarame bowed to Yusuke. — I ask that you please forgive your cowardly teacher…
-Please, don't…
-Hold on… Something doesn't add up. — Ann said and turned to Madarame. — If the original painting got stolen, how did you make copies of it…?
-I… happened to find a finely detailed photograph of it in an artbook. — Madarame replied.
-So you managed to sell copies of a photo of the original? I'm not sure how this works, but don't people who buy paintings generally have a keen eye for the fine arts? Because this sounds like a lie to me. — Ann exclaimed.
-What would you know!?
-Me? Nothing. But something doesn't feel right.
-Lady Ann. — Morgana whispered to Ann, who discretely looked at him. — That one looks different.
Ann saw the picture covered by a purple cloth and took the piece off, revealing another "Sayuri".
-"Sayuri"!? — Yusuke whispered astounded, touching the painting. — This… this is the real "Sayuri"! But you said a moment ago that it was stolen! — Yusuke argued, turning at Madarame.
-That's a replica! — Madarame retorted angrily.
-No, it's nothing of the sort! This painting keeps me going… It's the reason I've made it this far… Sensei, don't tell me…
-It's fake. A counterfeit! I heard there was a counterfeit spread around and I bought it! — Madarame tried to argue, stepping the floor furiously.
-So you telling me the actual artist behind the painting bought a counterfeit? That's pushing it. — Ann said.
-You're lying sensei. Please just tell us the truth… — Yusuke begged.
-You too? — Madarame picked up his phone and pressed a few buttons. Then he showed his phone to both teenagers. — I've reported you to my private security company!
-What!?
-I had it set up to deal with some problematic paparazzi, but I never thought it'd have come so handily. — Madarame said with a smile.
-Please, wait! Let's talk about this!
-You can talk all you want to the police… That includes you, Yusuke.
-Lady Ann, let's run!
Morgana and Ann ran away. Madarame and Yusuke looked surprised at the black cat who was in the room.
-A cat!? Where did it— There's no point! They'll be here in two minutes!
-Takamaki-san! Wait! — Yusuke said following the blonde girl.
—
Metaverse. Madarame's Palace
At the same time.
—
-Aw yeah! This is the room! So, which one is for security?
Ren saw one of the computers was online and went straight to it. Deactivating all the protocols, they saw a message indicating the security system was now off-line.
-That should do it.
-Sweet! Now the lasers in the courtyard should be off for good! Mission complete!
-Now let's get back and wait for the others.
-Hey, who's there? — A voice asked from outside.
-Let's go, Skull.
-Crap, let's scram!
Exiting the building, they went to the garden and the lasers retracted into the ground, releasing the area from the security system.
-All right, looks like the security's totally off! — Ryuji said happily.
-Let's get back to the safe room and go back to the real world to meet them. — Ren said.
-Time. I need some time. My leg's aching!
-Okay.
Walking to the garden entrance, Ryuji started massaging his leg.
-I hope those two managed to get away…
-Me too. Honestly, I'm worried about how things went though.
-Meh, prolly went fine. Relax.
-I can't relax now, and— HOLY CRAP! Look at that! — Ren said, seeing a distortion appearing in the sky.
-Nooooo! — Ann yelled, falling from the sky with Yusuke, who managed to grab her in the air and land on his two feet.
-Impressive… — Ren said, truly impressed.
Then Morgana fell from the sky, hitting Yusuke on his head and landing abruptly on the floor.
-Gah!
-Aaagh… Owwwww!
-Are you guys alright, aside from that? — Ren asked, truly worried. — Things went worse, right?
-I thought I was gonna die…! — Ann said astounded, then she noticed Yusuke was still holding her in his arms. — Hey! Will you let me go already!? — She said, pushing Yusuke away.
-Hrgh!
Ren helped Yusuke to stand on his feet and Ryuji helped Ann.
-You're okay?
-I'll be. Oh no! — Ann came at Yusuke's direction, helping him as well. — I didn't mean to push him so hard… Are you okay? Wake up!
After helping Yusuke to recover, he stepped away from them frightened.
"For someone as weak as him, I'm quite impressed he was still on his feet and withstood a huge fall without fainting." Ren thought as he slowly approached Yusuke.
-Who are you all? — The blue-haired artist asked.
-Calm down, Kitagawa-kun! It's me! — Ann said desperately taking off her mask, trying to calm down Yusuke.
-Takamaki-san… — Yusuke said recognizing Ann, then he looked at Ren and Ryuji. — That means you two are…
Ren nodded in affirmation and took off his mask. After that, Yusuke looked at Morgana.
-I don't recall ever seeing this cat costume before though… — He said calmly, and Morgana's face twisted in anger. Ren gave a stare to Morgana, telling him to relax. — What is this place?
-It's complicated, but in short…
-We're inside Madarame's heart. — Ann completed Ren's phrase.
-What…? Inside… Sensei's heart? — Yusuke looked around and saw a gaudy place. — I'm sorry, Takamaki-san… But are you sure you're feeling okay?
-We know it's hard to understand and accept it, but it's true. — Ren said.
-She ain't lyin'. That is what that bastard truly feels. He's nothin' but a greedy-filled money-grubber. — Ryuji replied.
-Enough of this rubbish. — Yusuke said irritated.
-Kitagawa-kun! Didn't it cross your mind that something wasn't right about Madarame!? — Ann asked.
-That's…
-You may not want to believe it, but this is another reality as viewed through Madarame's eyes. — Ann said.
-This place it's a reflection of Madarame's heart, like a mirror that reflects his true self. — Ren said. — It's a place that reflects his true nature.
-This repulsive world? — Yusuke asked, pointing at the place, then he asked: — Just who are all of you!?
-I guess you could say… we're a group that changes the hearts of rotten crooks. — Ryuji said.
-Technically we are that. We are the Phantom Thieves of Heart. We steal the hearts of twisted rotten people. — Ren said.
Yusuke stood quiet for a brief moment, looking at Madarame's Palace one more time.
-If everything you said is true, then the sensei I know doesn't exist.
-I know it's hard to accept, but that's the truth about Ichiryusai Madarame. — Ren said.
-You gotta snap out of it. — Ryuji said.
-Still… He has kept me safe these past ten years. My gratitude for that won't just disappear. — Yusuke said.
-You're gonna forgive him!? At this rate, you'll… — Ryuji said.
-You can still be grateful for what he has done for you. — Ren said.
-Joker!? — Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana exclaimed surprised.
-Still, you can't avert your eyes from the truth. He only did that for his own benefit. He's only using you, as he did to all his pupils before him. He's no better than a criminal, and that is something you can't forgive him. — Ren said.
-I—N-Ngh!
Yusuke fell on his knees and grabbed his chest.
-Are you okay? — Ann asked.
-I'm trying to be rational about this, but my emotions are overwhelming me…
-He's having an emotional breakdown and on top of that he's been drained by the Metaverse and he's hurt. And also, he's in danger here. We need to take him out of here and fast. — Ren said, taking Yusuke and leaning him over his shoulder.
-Joker's right. We don't have time to dawdle. The security level had gone through the roof! We need to get out of here at once!
-Can you walk? — Ren asked and Yusuke nodded in agreement. — Okay, let's go.
-Let's avoid any battles as much as possible. We have an amateur with us now. — Morgana said.
Going back to the entrance, Yusuke saw several paintings of random people in the museum. Looking carefully, he thought he recognized some of them.
-So this… Inside of Sensei's heart? A vain museum?
-It seems so. — Ren replied.
-Wait.
-What is it?
-Ah… This painting! — Yusuke said, recognizing the girl in the painting.
-Do you recognize it? We were thinking these might be his past pupils or something. — Ann said.
-But… Why are there paintings of them here?
-Technically those aren't actually paintings. They're the pupils themselves. — Morgana explained.
-Madarame sees them as mere tools, a faded memory of his past after using them. — Ren said.
-Yeah. Oh, and uh… we found us too. — Ryuji said and Yusuke's face twisted in anger after hearing that.
-We'll talk more later. For now, let's get out of here.
-Let's. Do you still need help?
-No… I can do it on my own.
-Okay.
Rushing towards the exit, they reached the golden statue room. Going straight to the exit, their way was blocked by two guards and Ren drew his knife, ready to fight.
-The exit right here!
They heard loud laughter and the thieves and Yusuke turned at the person who was laughing.
-Who is it!? — Ann asked, then looked astounded at Shadow Madarame. — What the—
-Talk about some bullshit clothes! First a king, now some kind of shogun!? — Ryuji said, interrupting Ann.
-It seems we have those egocentric weirdos to deal with. — Ren commented acidly.
-Welcome to the museum of the master artist Madarame. — Shadow Madarame said with a twisted grin.
-Huh!? Sensei!? Is that you!? — Yusuke asked perplexed. — That attire…
-Disgusting. — Ann said looking at Madarame's golden attire.
-This… this is all one big lie, isn't it? — Yusuke asked.
-My usual ragged attire is nothing but an act. Besides, a famous artist living in that shack? I have another home… under a mistress's name, of course.
-I'm almost impressed to see such a setup. Unfortunately, I can see beyond your act, and I have to tell you, you are a terrible liar. — Ren said pointing at Madarame. Madarame laughed.
-Don't make me laugh! — Shadow Madarame retorted.
-That's far from funny, you criminal.
-If that "Sayuri" was stolen, why was it in the storage room? And if you have the real one, why make copies!? If it's that you Sensei… please tell me! — Yusuke begged.
-Foolish child, you still don't see? — Shadow Madarame said disappointed.
-It's all a setup made by you, isn't it? — Ren asked.
Shadow Madarame laughed.
-Bravo! It seems someone has some brains here. The painting being stolen was just a false rumor I spread! It was all a perfect calculating staging!
-What do you mean? — Yusuke asked.
-Let me see… How does this sound? — Shadow Madarame cleaned his throat and said: "I found it, but it can't go public… But you can have it for a special price, though…"
-Can't you see Yusuke? It was all an act for him to make a profit from it, using the "Sayuri" as a way to get rich with ease. — Ren replied.
-Hahahahaha! You are absolutely right! So, how's that for the preferential treatment!? Art snobs will eat it up, and pay good cash at that! — Shadow Madarame said.
-No… Argh!
Yusuke fell on his knees, feeling a strong pinch on his chest.
-Kitagawa-kun!
-The value of art is purely an illusion. What's the matter with providing that illusion to eager customers? Though I doubt a brat like you would ever come up with such a brilliant scheme! — Shadow Madarame said with a maniacal smile.
-Abusing the goodwill of people has nothing to do with the value of art. Besides, art is valuable in many ways you clearly can't see. — Ren replied.
-What do you know about art?
-It seems I know more than you, old man.
-You keep goin' on and on about money this, money that… No wonder you ended up with this disgusting museum! — Ryuji yelled.
-You're supposed to be an artist, right!? Aren't you ashamed of plagiarizing other people's work!? — Ann exclaimed furiously.
-Art is nothing but a tool… A tool to gain money and fame. — Shadow Madarame said.
-For you at least. — Ren said.
-No matter. You helped me greatly as well, Yusuke…
-God… Pisses me off… That's your teacher. — Ryuji said.
-But what about the people who believed in you? Who thinks you're a master artist!? — Yusuke asked.
-…I'll tell this alone, Yusuke. If you wish to succeed in this world, I'd advise you don't rise against me. Do you believe anyone could find success with my objection holding them down? — Shadow Madarame laughed.
-To think I was under the care of this wretched man! — Yusuke said astounded.
-You thought I took you in out of the goodness in my heart? Plucking talented, yet troubled artists allow me to find promising pupils and take their ideas. After all, it's much easier to steal the future of children who can't fight back.
-I can't believe this…
-Livestock are killed for their hide and meat! This is no different, you fool!
-You abuse your pupils, use them and throw them away as nothing, and you still think you're right, saying that is for survival!? You disgust me! — Ren said.
-Enough! I tire of this little chat. It's time that I—
-You are unforgivable! — Yusuke said, interrupting Shadow Madarame.
-What…?
-It doesn't matter who you are… I won't forgive you! — Yusuke said, glancing at Shadow Madarame with bloodshot eyes. Standing back on his feet he clenched his fists, ready to fight.
-So, you repay my kindness, keeping you around for all these years with ingratitude? You damn brat!
-No Madarame. I'm only repaying you in the same way you used me over those years.
-You! Men! Dispose of these thieves, especially him! — Shadow Madarame said, pointing at Yusuke.
-Get back! — The thieves ordered, drawing their weapons.
-How amusing.
-Kitagawa-kun!?
-It seems reality is stranger than fiction, hm? —Yusuke said and gave a hollow laugh. — I wanted to believe it wasn't true… I had clouded my vision for so long… My eyes were truly blind… Blind, and unable to see the true self behind this one horrible man.
Have you finally come to your senses?
-Argh!
-Kitagawa-kun! — Ann exclaimed worriedly as she and the others saw Yusuke shaking his head in pain.
"Who are you?" Yusuke asked, grabbing his head with both hands.
How foolishly you averted your eyes from the truth… A deplorable imitation indeed…
"Then what should I do?" Yusuke asked.
Best you part from that aspect of yourself!
-ARGH!
Yusuke fell on his knees and looked at Shadow Madarame.
"I see… I understand now!" Yusuke said. "I know now what I should do."
Very well. Let's forge a contract.
Yusuke scratched furiously his fingers against the floor, making them bleed. He glanced at his hands and saw his blood painting the floor.
I am thou, thou art I… The world is filled with both beauty and vice… It's time you teach people which is which!
A mask stylized in a shape like a fox's head appeared on Yusuke's face.
-Very well. Come Goemon!
With a graceful move, Yusuke ripped off his mask, and a blue pillar of flames surrounded him. A shogun figure with an awesome topper appeared behind Yosuke, who was now wearing a fox stylized suit dark blue jumpsuit, with a fox tail.
-A breathtaking sight. — Yusuke said, making a powerful pose. — Imitation they may be, but together, they made a fine spectacle. — Yusuke grabbed his katana and withdrew from his Saya, revealing a beautiful blade with a stylized pattern drawn on it. — Though the flowers of the evil blossom, be it known… Abominations are fated to perish.
With a swing of his sword, Yusuke with his Persona Goemon sent all the Shadow to fly away, defeating them with ease.
-Whoa that's impressive. — Morgana said.
-That's what I call a show! — Ren said with a wide grin on his face.
-Hmph… Who do you think you are!? — Shadow Madarame asked furiously — The price of that insolence will be death! Where are my guards!? Kill them all!
Various guards appeared and Yusuke pointed his sword at them.
-The children who adore you as "father"… The prospects of your pupils… — Yusuke saw Shadow Madarame smiling at his speech. — How many did you trample upon? How many dreams did you exchange for riches!? No matter what it takes… I will bring you to justice!
-Let's see what you made of! Are you ready? — Ren asked.
-I'm ready! — Yusuke said with a devious smile on his face.
-Then let's go. Let's show him the true passion for art! — Ren said with a smile as well.
The Shadows revealed their true form, becoming four tengu-like creatures and their leader was a blue-skinned man, with a blacksmith attire and a heavy shiny metal over his head, holding a hammer and pliers on his hands. Yusuke called back his mask, as the blacksmith Shadow clashed his tools against each other.
-You are in the presence of Lord Madarame! On your knees intruders. — Said the blacksmith Shadow
-I learned much from you, Madarame. In order to see authenticity… one must be dispassionately realistic. With Goemon by my side… I can now ascertain your true self without any reservations! — Yusuke exclaimed and took off his mask, calling his Persona. — Goemon! Bufu!
Using the Bufu skill, Yusuke froze the foolish tengu-like creatures and attacked him with his katana. Ren distracted the leader of the guards, a blacksmith like Shadow, as Ryuji attacked with his Persona to take the Shadow down.
-Why you…!
The Shadow struck Ren, sending him back a little.
-Carmen! Diarama! — Ann said calling her Persona and aiding Ren to recover from the strike. After recovering, Ren called his Persona and used the Agi skill to stun him without success. The tengu-like creatures recovered and attacked the thieves with all their strength. Taking advantage of Ryuji's distraction, the blacksmith Shadow-like grabbed him with his pliers and hit him with his hammer.
-Are you alright, Skull? — Ann asked.
-Yes, I am. Watch your health, Panther.
Using the Diarama skill to recover herself, Ann raised her guard up, defending herself from the Shadow attacks.
-Yusuke, with me! Persona! Ame-no-Uzume! Mabufu!
-Persona! Goemon! Bufu!
Both Ren and Yusuke using the ice elemental skill, managed to kill the tengu-like Shadows and to severely hurt the blacksmith like Shadow, and taking advantage of that, Ren called his Persona again to recover everyone as Yusuke called Goemon to physically strike the last Shadow.
-Now everyone! Attack them with all our strength!
Striking with their all, they attacked the Shadow using their Personas, killing the Shadow. After that, Yusuke walked towards Madarame, who stepped back, but the new thief fell on his knees again, tired after a long battle.
-Yusuke, you've just thrown your bright future down the drain. I'll destroy every chance you've ever had of becoming an artist! — Shadow Madarame exclaimed furiously, walking away.
-Madarame! — Yusuke yelled, seeing him get away.
-You'll forever rue the day you dared defy me. — Shadow Madarame said with his face twisted in anger as he left the place.
-Get… Back here!
Yusuke tried to get after him, but he fell again. Ren and the others grabbed him and leaned over his shoulders.
-Kitagawa-kun! — Ann exclaimed worriedly.
-Why can't I move!? — Yusuke asked tiredly.
-Listen, you're totally drained. You can't do much, even if you wanted to! — Ann said.
-But…
-You need to rest. You spent too much time here and you're hurt. — Ren said.
-What a disgrace I am! — Yusuke said bitterly.
-C'mon, just listen to her. — Ryuji said, helping as well. — Here, let me lend a hand for ya.
Exiting the place, they went to the reception, where they put Yusuke on the sofa and waited for him to recover.
-You've known for quite some time, haven't you? — Ann asked, giving a can of 1UP.
-I'm no fool. Strange people have been coming by for years, and plagiarism was an everyday affair. But… Who would want to admit that the man they owed their life too was doing such terrible things?
-Why didn't you leave, Kitagawa-kun? — Ann asked.
-Well, he is the one who painted the "Sayuri". On top of that, I owe him a great debt…
-You mean 'cause he raised you? — Ryuji asked.
-I… never knew my father. I was told my mother raised me by herself, but she died in an accident when I was three.
-Kitagawa-san…
"I guess I'm the "lucky" one." Ren thought bitterly, thinking about his past.
-That's when Sensei took me in. I heard he helped my mother while she was still alive.
-Heard? — Ann and Ryuji asked at the same time, visibly confused.
-To be honest, I don't remember much about my mother either.
-It's understandable, seeing you're too young to remember. — Ren said. — So, you saw Madarame as your father, right? That's why you did all of that for him because you saw him as the father you never had.
-Yes. I did everything I could for Sensei. I thought of him as a father… but he changed. To think he would treat the "Sayuri", the very foundation of his art, like that!
-…A lot happened to you, huh? — Ryuji said, looking away, feeling ashamed and bad.
-When you had mentioned plagiarism… deep down, I knew you were right. That's why I so vehemently denied you… I was simply running away from the truth. I'm sorry. — Yusuke said.
-It's okay. I understand how that feels. — Ren assured.
-Amamiya-san…
-Funny, isn't it? A person like me, averting his eyes from the truth. But it's true. However, when I had the chance to face the truth, I had help to accept it. All we needed to do was help you to face the truth. We're also asking for your forgiveness for forcing you. We weren't supposed to do so.
-Please, don't be. I'm grateful for the chance to face what I have been denying all this time.
-You're way too serious, man. — Ryuji said with a grin. — That's why you always get struck in your own head. Look at me! I just go with the flow!
-For real. — Ann said.
-What's Ryuji is trying to say is that you need to relax a little. To breathe and think before acting so recklessly. — Ren said desperately. — That also applies to you two.
-For real?
-For real.
-What are you going to do now? — Morgana asked Yusuke.
-I don't know… — Yusuke replied.
-Do you want to make Madarame face justice and pay for his crimes?
-How?
-Well we can't help the fact Madarame's gone and changed. But… we can change his heart. We'll make him pay for his crimes. Especially on the court. My friend here's a lawyer. He can sue him for sure — Ryuji said determinately.
-I can sue Madarame, and I do have proof to back up too.
-That reminds me, you mentioned something about that "change of heart" earlier…
-Have you heard the rumors, right? The ones about the Phantom Thieves that steal hearts? — Ryuji asked.
-Now you mentioned it… Yes, I do… And you said… — Yusuke looked at them and realized. — …!? Don't tell me…
Suddenly, several guards appeared, ready to surround the thieves.
-Oh, crap!
-It seems it's time to scram! Mona.
-Got it! We'll talk later! — Morgana said, taking a flash grenade and throwing it at the ceiling, blinding the enemies and giving them the opportunity to escape.
-Wait… When did my clothes change? — Yusuke asked, surprised to see his new attire.
-You just noticed that now? — Ryuji said.
-Less talking and more running. — Ren said. — I'll explain everything later to you.
-Yeah, save it for after, now run! — Ann said.
—
Real World. Shibuya Station.
Shibuya Dinner.
—
-And in short, that is. That's how we stole Kamoshida's heart. — Ren said.
-…I see. And because of that, this PE teacher had a change of heart… — Yusuke said. — The Phantom Thieves who steal hearts… To think they truly exist.
-We're right in front of you, is it that hard to believe?
-Kind of. Indeed I have to believe in your words. Especially after seeing a world like that…
-Yeah. Are you feeling better? — Ren asked Yusuke.
-Yes, I do. Thank you for asking. — Ren nods his head in agreement and Yusuke leaned forward. — So your plan with Madarame-sensei… it's to prove his guilt in court, then force a change of heart, correct? — Yusuke asked.
-Correct. I'm planning to indict Madarame for his crimes, then we'll steal his heart after getting a verdict. Why do you ask?
-Let me join… as a member of the Phantom Thieves and as an indicator of the legal action against Madarame.
-What!? — Ryuji, Ann, and Morgana exclaimed. Ren leaned forward, with a serious frown.
-Are you sure about that? — He asked.
-Had I faced reality sooner, this may have been avoided. I must put an end to this for the sake of the others whose future as artists were robbed, as well. That… the most civil thing I can do for the man who was in some manner, my father.
-…Civil, huh?
-Okay, you can join us. Ryuji? — Ren asked
-Sounds fine to me. We're gonna deal with Madarame anyways. —Ryuji replied.
-Ann?
-I'm fine with that. — Ann replied.
-Morgana?
-He may have a mental shutdown if we screw up. We have ways to prevent that, but they aren't fail-safe. Remember how we mentioned this on our way here? — Morgana said.
-Then I ask, are you okay with that? There's still a slim chance of us killing him. Are you sure of that? — Ren asked with a serious frown.
-Yes. Madarame is a man who has the art world under his thumb. He has connections to many organizations. If someone like me raises my voice, it'll only be snubbed out… We have no option but this. Then, I ask: Are you sure can you do this?
Ren nodded his head in affirmation.
-I'm sure of it. I managed to prove Kamoshida's guilt in court, I'm sure your testimony will be convincing against Madarame.
-My testimony.
-I recorded our conversation that day when you threatened us.
-What…? You… But why didn't you…?
-Because I know Madarame has kept you as his victim. You were only used by him. Although I do admit I was planning to use this recording as a last resort.
-I see… Are you still planning to use it?
-Only if you want to.
-Then you have my permission. As I said before, we're out of options here.
-Kitagawa-kun… — Ann said.
-It's a deal then. — Morgana said happily.
-We have a new member in the Phantom Thieves! — Ann exclaimed happily as well. — I hope we get along, Yusuke!
-You better not slow us down. — Ryuji said, excitedly as well.
-I'll do my best. — Yusuke said sure of himself.
-Welcome abroad, Yusuke. I do hope we get along as well. — Ren said, extending his hand and Yusuke shook it.
-Thank you. I ask that you coach me well.
-Count on us. Now about our plan.
-Oh, that reminds me… I wonder what's going on with the real Madarame. Yusuke and I were in a pretty tight situation.
Ren pinched the bridge of his nose.
-As things can't get any worse…
-Actually, I contacted him before we came here. He believes that I continued pursuing Takamaki-san. And, just as you all explained, it appears he knows nothing about his Shadow.
-What did he say?
-He was complaining to the security company how they couldn't even catch one high school girl. However, he is still furious about it and said that he's going to take legal action against everyone.
-As I thought… — Ren said in an acid tone. — Why don't things get even worse? I do think it's still easy enough.
-Is he… okay…? — Ann asked.
-He's okay, he's only being sarcastic and melodramatic. Ignore him. — Morgana said.
-Talk about bein' completely on guard… — Ryuji commented bitterly.
-Legal action… He's acting way too desperate. Maybe he still has more secrets. — Ann said.
Ren smiled looking at them.
-We still have until the exhibit ends, right?
-Yes. If he were to act, it'd be after the exhibit is over. Any scandal during that show would be his loss.
-Right when I think the talk about being a nude model is over, this happens!? — Ann said saddened.
Ren was thoughtfully looking at his phone, thinking about the situation.
-We'll have to force a change of heart before then if we dodge this "legal action" thing.
-Why not cause a scandal instead? — Ren said.
-I don't follow… — Morgana said.
-Let's force Madarame to go to court. We can sue him for plagiarism.
-How…? — Yusuke asked.
-I have recorded a certain testimony. Do you know someone named Natsuhiko Nakanohara?
-Yes. He was one of the Sensei's pupils.
-Well, I'll open a legal action of plagiarism and I'll need some artwork of yours Yusuke ASAP.
-Well, I do have several sketches and…
-That'll work. I'll submit them as evidence.
-I see you do have a plan. Looks like our plan must be accomplished while the exhibit is still open!
-Yes. Now listen: My plan consists of taking legal action against Madarame, meanwhile we'll finish making our infiltration route through his Palace. Once we're done, I'll take legal action against him and get an acquittal, then we'll steal his treasure. I'll fill the charge files right away, so we'll only have a few days. Everyone agrees?
-Yes.
-Then we have a plan.
-Now then, let me make a call to Chief Nick. I'll need his help to get the files ready.
-Okay.
Ren took his phone and made a call to Phoenix.
-By the way… What is this? — Yusuke asked, pointing at Morgana.
-Huh? A cat. — Ryuji replied.
-But it's talking.
-You have a problem with that!? — Morgana exclaimed furiously.
-No, not really.
-Wow… — Ren said impressed. — No! I was impressed with Kitagawa-san's comment. No… No… Yes…
-Why not? — Ryuji asked surprised.
-He's just on a different wavelength than other people. — Ann explained.
-I see… — Ryuji said impressed.
-Do you wish to draw me? You better bring out the best of me, in that case. — Morgana said.
-Hm…
Yusuke extended his hand towards Morgana.
-Hey don't touch me like—
However, instead of touching Morgana, he pressed the button on the table, calling the waitress.
-I was thinking of ordering some black bean jelly. — Yusuke explained after sitting back in his seat.
-I bet he got the idea from a "black cat"… — Ryuji commented with an edge of disappointment.
-Oh! I remembered I didn't bring any money! — Yusuke said.
-Never mind… He's just weird. — Ann said disappointed as well.
-I'll pay up… — Ren said, disappointed too. — Yes, I do know. No… No… What? No.
—
Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
-Good evening.
-Good evening. I hope you're not up to no good. Don't forget you're still under probation, got that? One misstep and you're finished.
-I do know. You don't need to remind me. — Ren said, going upstairs.
-…No good? What's wrong with changing the hearts of criminals? We're doing the right thing. — Morgana said, getting out of the bag.
-I do know Morgana. But getting into problems is no good, you know?
-Yes I know.
Ren heard his phone ring and he saw he received a message from the Phantom Thieves chat group.
Legal action? That ain't funny! If the police hear about this, they'll totally get in touch with the school. — Ryuji texted.
You're right. That will be problematic for us for sure if the school knows about this. — Ren replied. — Still, I'm expecting the worst, so you better get ready.
Yes, I know. If that happens, we'll get expelled for sure this time.
School would be the least of our worries… We'd ended up arrested. Unlawful entry, defamation… — Ann texted.
Guess that means we really can't afford to eff this up this time. — Ryuji said. — Ren, we're counting on you.
Okay, count on me.
Yeah, from here on out is what really matters. Let's do this!
-They're trusting in you. We'll need to press charges before him and steal his heart. Try to focus on that problem for now.
-Got it.
-Hey kiddo, your mentors are here.
Ren went downstairs, surprised to see his mentors at the shop. A game talking show was running on the tv.
-Oh, hello Ren.
-Chief Nick, Chief Miles. — Ren said. The TV was on a game show, and Sojiro raised the TV volume, trying to hear the program.
-If you punch someone and hurt them, you've committed "bodily harm." Now, consider these two cases: A: Unconsenting cutting of hair. B: Using noise to cause distress. Which of the two would be considered a case of bodily harm? You be the judge! — The Game Show Host said.
-Do you still know which one is considered a case of bodily harm? — Miles asked.
-Case B: Using noise to cause distress. Noise can cause the body's stress, disrupting the body's functions. Case A is a case of assault.
-The correct answer is… B! If you drive someone crazy with noise, that's bodily harm! If it disrupts the body's functions, it counts as bodily harm, even if there's no physical contact! Hair grows back, so it doesn't count as a wound. That'd be a case of "assault", not of bodily harm. — The Game Show Host explained.
-I didn't know that. — Sojiro said. — You truly are smart.
-Hey, you got it right. I'm impressed by how much you know about the law. — Morgana said.
-Still sharp as always. — Phoenix and Miles said proudly.
-Thank you. So, why are you two here? I was going to study.
-We came here to talk. Don't worry it'll be quick.
-All right, I'm headin' home. Lock up the store.
-I will.
Sojiro left the store and Ren crossed his arms, staring at his both mentors.
-So, why are you two here? — Ren asked.
-Come here to check if you're okay, isn't that enough reason for you?
-Not for you two, and especially in a situation like this.
-Are we so easy to read? — Phoenix asked.
-Depends. Actually, I was wanting to talk with you two.
-Actually, we wanted to talk with you too. But you first. It seems you're in trouble again.
-Okay.
Ren explained the situation and after getting the grasp of the situation, Miles only shook his head in disappointment.
-Ren, Ren… You should know at this point you could avoid this issue only by not butting into their matters.
-I know, I know…
-But seeing your actual situation, we're decided to make a proposal with you.
-A proposal…?
-Yes, a proposal. Our proposal is: We'll help you with your cases, and aid you in your Phantom Thievery mission. — Phoenix said.
-In exchange, we'll want you to be our assistant in our cases. Also, we'll need you to aid in our investigations. You'll have the same privileges as us in the crime scenes, also free access to the prosecutor's office. — Miles said.
-Also, you'll have the special permission of the ACES Team to get access to the case files of previous cases which are classified. Since we're the leaders of that division of the SEES, it shouldn't be a problem for you. — Phoenix explained.
-Also that extends to getting permission to investigate any place you'll need to, so that'll be very advantageous for you for the time being. — Miles explained.
Ren thought for a moment and looked at them.
-I don't get it. Why are you two making a deal with me just now?
-Honestly, we'd never bothered to make a deal with you before. — Phoenix answered.
-Besides, we only accepted your request. It never occurred to make such a deal with you. We thought that alone would be enough. It seems we were wrong. — Miles explained.
-And, that'll be a plus into our previous agreement, wouldn't you agree?
Ren went silent again, as he thought about it.
-What kind of agreement do you three have? — Morgana asked, genuinely curious.
-It's not important now, Morgana. So, let me get this straight: You two want to make a new agreement with me prior to my situation, correct? — Both Phoenix and Miles nodded in agreement. — I see…
-So, what is your answer?
Ren smiled.
-How can I say no? Of course, I accept our deal.
-Great. It's a deal then. — Both Phoenix and Miles said.
"I made a new deal with my mentors… I wonder how that is going to end."
—
Unknown Location.
Unknown Time.
—
-You had a good way to get access to information. Moreover, you had privileged access to the crime scenes during the investigations of your cases.
-And what about it? I had to, it's kind of my job.
-Let's say it's true. How do you gain access so easily to such privileged access to the information? You better answer me!
Ren smiled.
-You already know the answer.
—
May, 19. Thursday.
Yongen-Jaya District. Café Leblanc.
Evening.
—
I am thou, thou art I…
Thou hast acquired a new vow.
It shall become the wings of rebellion
That breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the World Persona,
I have obtained the winds of blessing that
Shall lead to freedom and new power…
Ren felt his power grow as his bond with his mentors deepened even more. After that both his mentors looked at the books Ren was carrying.
-You were going to study? — Phoenix asked.
-Yes. Why? — Ren replied.
-Do you want our help to study.?
-Wright, please. Ren can do that on his own. — Edgeworth said, shaking his head in disappointment.
-Actually, I could have some help in English since you two are native Americans.
Phoenix scratched his head.
-Well…
-Let me guess, grammar isn't your forte, isn't it Chief Nick?
Miles laughed.
-What's so funny? — Phoenix said, shooting a deadly glance towards the magenta prosecutor.
-It's because Ren is absolutely right.
-Hey! I have improved over the years. Isn't my fault if everyone isn't so well cultured as you, your Majesty. — Phoenix replied sardonically.
-Wright, Wright. You should know it's "I have improved a lot over the years.". It's not my fault if your grammar isn't—
-Pompous as yours. — Phoenix said, cutting Miles.
-Why you…
Ren laughed at the childish argument of both men. After that Phoenix and Miles helped Ren with the studies during the night. After the studying session, Ren said goodbye to his mentors and went to sleep.
—
May, 20. Friday.
Aoyama-Itchome District. Shujin Academy.
Lunchtime.
—
Ren saw a commotion in front of the bulletin board. Watching more carefully, he immediately knew what was happening.
"The results are out. I wonder what score I got."
Ren checked the results and he saw he was a little above the average score, which made him give a slight smirk.
-At least some good news.
-Well, it should be a good example for your friends.
-But to be a better example I should study more.
-That's the spirit.
"That might raise my charm towards my friends. That will help with my confidence."
-Let's go.
—
Shibuya District. Untouchable.
After School.
—
-Hello. — Ren said after entering the airsoft shop.
-…Hey. You came at just the right time. — Iwai said, seeing Ren walking in his direction.
-What do you mean? — Ren asked confused, and Iwai ignored it.
-Slight change of plans. The paper bag from the other day? All yours.
-What?
-You picked it up somewhere. Nothin' to do with me. Understand? I didn't see it, I didn't touch it, I don't know about it. We clear?
Ren realized what Iwai meant and nodded in agreement.
"Looks like he's into a delicate situation. I should say that to Chief Nick and Chief Miles to gather some information." Ren thought.
-…If that's it, then go home. You can go window-shopping somewhere else.
-I came here to buy a few models. — Ren said.
-Wait here. I'll bring the catalog.
Iwai went to the back of the shop and Morgana put out his head from Ren's bag.
-That modified model gun should be a powerful weapon to use in the Palace battles.
-I know. You think we should ask him what's inside that bag.
-Of course! Just ask and don't freak it out!
-Let's let it be for now.
-But…
-I think we'll need more info about it. — Ren said with a serious glance.
-I see. You should be gutsier as well. Maybe taking on the Big Bang Challenge and some cases would help it.
-I know, I know…
Iwai came back with the catalog in his hands.
-So what'll be? — He asked.
After purchasing some new equipment, Ren checked his phone and saw a message from Ryuji
Hey, you're in Shibuya?
Yes, I am. Why? — Ren replied.
So, y'know how we were lookin' for somewhere we can train?
Yes.
Well, I finally found a spot. It's in Shibuya. We're free to do it whenever we want! How 'bout we head on over there?
Ren thought for a moment before answering.
Now?
Now.
Okay, I'm free today.
Yes! Better pick up some spare clothes and a trainin' gear 'cause we gotta work a lot. I meet you there in thirty minutes.
-So, you're going? — Morgana asked.
-Of course, I do. Now let's head back home to pick up my training gear and some spare clothes.
—
Shibuya District. Protein Lovers gym.
After School.
—
-Here we are. Protein Lovers gym. — Ryuji said at the gym entrance.
-Here? — Ren asked. He saw the place a few times, but he never thought that was a gym.
-Yeah, dude! It pays per visit, so you don't gotta worry about any bullshit contracts or anything. The equipment's kinda crappy, but they got tons of variety. Plus, it's really damn cheap. Totally worth it, even without a pool or hot tub.
-I see… That's good to know. "Plus that can be useful for me."
-Oh yeah! You bring your stuff?
-Do you think I'm not prepared? I bring spare clothes, the training gear, and a towel. Also, I brought the Protein Power.
-That's good man. But did you bring spare undies?
-Of course, I do.
-Good, 'cause gettin' back into your sweating clothes after a nice hot shower is like, the grossest goddamn thing. In case you forget, don't get your hopes up. No way I'm gonna let you use mine, that totally gross dude.
"If Morgana was here, he'll say that kinda considerate for a monkey-like him… Dammit, since when I'm thinking like Morgana!?" It was Ren thought.
-Okay, I wasn't thinking of that.
-Okay! Now let's head in.
Going in, both Ryuji and Ren started to train after changing to their training gears. Some hours later training, Ren and Ryuji were tired, after a hard course of exercises.
-Phew… My form… comin' back… but I don't get… any stamina… — Ryuji said panting and coughing.
-Breathe… slowly… — Ren said.
-Sakamoto?
Someone come in Ren and Ryuji's direction and Ryuji recognized the person.
-Ikeda-senpai! What's bonkin'? — Ryuji said surprised.
-Sorry for asking, but who's him? Wait, did you say senpai?
-Yeah, he was my senpai in Shujin.
-I see…
-"Bonkin'"? You say the strangest things. It's that how you greet a friend?
"It seems Japanese isn't Ryuji's forte." Ren thought snickering.
-I've been tryin' to come up with some cool new slang. Maybe it'll catch on!
-You can't just do that. — Ikeda rebutted. — Oh, and you don't need to call me senpai anymore. I've already graduated, remember?
-Yeah, I do know. Still, you'll be always my senpai.
Ikeda laughed.
-Do you never will change, do you, Sakamoto? Who's him? I haven't seen you before… Were you on the track team?
-No, I'm not. — Ren replied.
-Him? He's uh… a friend! Ikeda-senpai, Amamiya.
-Nice to meet you. — Ren said bowing to Ikeda.
-There's no need to be formal. So, he's not from the track team? — Ikeda asked.
-No. By the time he showed up, the track team was already… well, y'know. — Ryuji replied.
-I see… Speaking of which, how's your leg?
-Eh, I'm managin'… How 'bout you, Senpai? You still runnin'? — Ryuji asked.
-I actually joined my university's track team. You'd think I would've quit entirely after what happened… — Ikeda answered.
-About that, I'm real sorry… — Ryuji said sorrowfully.
-No, Sakamoto. I should be the one apologizing.
-Huh? Wha—
-I was supposed to be the leader of our team, yet I just resigned myself to Kamoshida's will…
-That's 'cause you needed him to write your letter of rec, right? You were just lookin' out for your future… but I still managed to eff it up anyways. — Ryuji rebutted.
-Kamoshida clearly never intended on writing my letter of recommendation. You were just his excuse not to. And honestly, I enjoy where I am now. The track team isn't anything special, but it's perfect for me. So in truth, I should be the one thanking you for what you did, Sakamoto.
-Senpai…
-I always regretted not doing more to protect you guys. But I heard some good news recently… The Shujin's track team's being reinstated!
-For real!? — Ryuji exclaimed surprised.
-I mean Kamoshida was convicted and he confessed all the horrible stuff he did, right? I guess the school got the old team together and told them they want to try starting it up again.
-…Nobody told me about that. — Was Ryuji's reply.
-I didn't have heard anything about it either… — Ren said.
-Huh, odd… The rumor got as far as me, and I'm not even a student anymore. — Ikeda said. —Anyway, I heard they're going to get Mr. Yamauchi as their new advisor.
-Yamauchi…? Hold up, THAT Yamauchi!? — Ryuji asked surprised.
-Yup, the one who was basically Kamoshida's lapdog. Apparently, he volunteered. He's really enthusiastic about pulling the track team up from the ashes.
-He is?
-You know, now that the team is being reinstated, there's no need for any bad blood, right? Why don't you talk to them? I'm sure they could use someone with your passion.
-…Yeah.
After chatting for a while Ikeda said goodbye and left the gym.
-Ryuji? — Ren called.
-So the track team's comin' back… good for them. — Ryuji said, glancing at the ground.
-You seem conflicted. Are you really alright?
-Nah, not really… For real though, I'm glad the team's comin' back. It's sweet that Nakaoka and them can start trainin' again. But I'm still worried 'bout their advisor, Yamauchi. He's basically like a mini-Kamoshida.
-Ugh, so he's basically an asshole, right? — Ren asked.
-For sure. He'd always yell at us at practice, but then be a huge kiss-ass when our parents were around. Ugh, I can't believe a moron like that's gonna be advisin' the track team. He doesn't even teach PE!
-Yeah, now you have said that it sounds suspicious.
-Totally! He was to be up to something. — Ryuji said convicted.
-Yes, I do agree with you. So, what are you gonna do?
-I'll do some research… There's a chance I'm gonna need your help too, mkay?
-Okay. You can count on me on that!
-That's the spirit! If I need anything, you'd be free to lend me a hand if I need it, yeah?
-Yeah… "If I have space in my agenda. Hmm, I feel my bond with Ryuji has deepened. I wonder what'll happen."
-All right, we don't get time to be messin' around here anymore! Let's head home!
-And what about the shower?
-Oh, I totally forgot! Let's take a shower first!
"Why I'm not surprised? When he's excited with something, he forgot everything else." Ren thought slightly disconcerted.
After that both Ren and Ryuji went back home. When Ren arrived at the Leblanc, he received a call from Ryuji.
-Yes?
-Yo. What's bonkin'?
"You really should give up from that buddy." Was Ren's thought, but he ignored that and said:
-I'm fine, just arrived home. — Ren replied. — So, what's up?
-About that stuff today… I can't really let myself be happy about the track team startin' up again. Like I said earlier, there's just somethin' fishy about Yamauchi being the advisor. But I mean, if anything happens, I know you got my back. So I ain't too worried.
-Don't worry, I gotcha.
-Thanks man, I knew I can count on you!
-Okay, I'm counting on you too.
-I mean, we don't know for sure if anythin' sketchy's goin' on. But when I get these gut feelings… they're usually right. Well, if I hear anything, I'll hit you up.
-Okay, keep me informed.
-Okay, later!
-Later.
—
May, 21. Saturday.
Shibuya District. Hideout (Accessway).
After School.
—
The thieves reunited with Yusuke in the accessway. Ren felt someone was following him and he looked around, seeking someone suspicious.
"Perhaps I was imagining things…?" He thought, snapping back to the others.
-Well, welcome to our hideout. Please just be discrete, we don't want unwanted attention. — Ren said to Yusuke.
-Very well.
-Yusuke, we still need to explain the basics to you don't we? — Morgana said.
-Yes, he doesn't know yet. — Ren said.
-Oh, you meant about the Metaverse and the Nav. I guess that stuff it's pretty important too.
-Of course, it is. That's important to understand what's it about our whole mission here. — Ren said.
-Please elaborate.
-Okay, let's start from the very beginning.
They explained to Yusuke the basics of the Metaverse, which made some questions about it. After getting a grasp of the situation, Yusuke nodded his head in affirmation.
-I feel as though I have a good grasp of the basic concepts. If anything arises that I fail to understand, I'll rely on those more experienced than myself. — Yusuke said.
-Don't worry, Ren and I will explain any questions you'll have. — Morgana assured.
-Although I doubt, you'll have some difficulty understanding. — Ren said.
-Hey! What does that mean!? — Both blondes asked.
-Nothing. I was saying Yusuke can catch things quickly, so my help to explain will be meaningless.
-Now when you said that… — Ann and Ryuji said.
-Well, you really should ask Ren and Morgana if you need anything. — Ann said.
-Now thinking back to Madarame though… I can't believe he'd consider pressing charges. — Morgana commented seriously,
-Yes, I've never seen him show such anger before. He is most likely serious about that. — Yusuke said.
-Well, it seems I have to fill and press charges against him before the exhibit ends. — Ren said.
-Yeah… You better be, because there's no way we'll be able to win if that happens.
-He likely won't act on that threat until the final day of the exhibit: June 5th. Simply put, I doubt he would be so foolish as to taint his name with a trial during his exhibition.
-Well, it seems we have to create a scandal in order to take Madarame down. A scandal he can't ignore. — Ren said with a defiant smile. — And then we'll steal his heart.
-All right, so we leave that legal shit to you, and after that, we just gotta steal Madarame's heart by then. — Ryuji said with a serious frown. — There's no way we're gonna let him press charges… We'll show people who he really is!
-That's the spirit. Now then, let's go. We have a route to secure.
