Tokyo District Court
Defendant Lobby No. 5
—
— I hope you are ready Ren. I saw Prosecutor Niijima walking in the corridor and she seemed confident. Way too confident. — Phoenix said, scratching his chin in thought.
— I know that, and I'm expecting the worst. — Ren replied nonchalantly, looking at the Court Record.
— Always a pessimist, Ren.
— Only a realist. I can't afford the luxury to stay behind. Unlike you, I'm a shameful person.
— Right… Said the sarcastic one.
Ren laughed.
— We need to check the evidence once again before the trial starts.
Yusuke came in, being escorted by one of the guards.
— Thank you very much once again.
— There's no need to thank me. It's only part of my job.
Yusuke walked toward Ren and Phoenix. He bowed at Phoenix.
— You are Wright-san, correct. It is nice to meet you.
Yusuke bowed at Phoenix.
Phoenix bowed as well in respect.
— Nice to meet you too. So you're the one who gave my apprentice a headache, right? — Phoenix asked with a serious frown.
Yusuke nodded his head awkwardly and Phoenix laughed.
— I'm only teasing you. Relax, I know you have your reasons? Especially now with your situation.
Yusuke blinked in surprise and then he asked Ren.
— Does he know about us?
— He's like us. You could say we're partners but in different teams. — Ren replied.
— I see… So you're one of us as well.
— You could say that. — Phoenix said. — Although there are many differences between you and us.
— Us…? — Yusuke asked, surprised.
— His team. Quite a long story and we all don't have the time for that. — Ren said while he checked the evidence they gathered.
— Sorry for that, but that's not the most appropriate time to talk about ourselves. We've got some time until our trump card arrives.
— The real issue will be to establish if we made an unlawful entry or not. I'm sure she'll press this point. That is if she will have the need to press it.
— True. In any case, I'll help you out. It's been a long time since I fought against Prosecutor Niijima. — Phoenix said.
— You're excited to face her again, aren't you?
Phoenix laughed.
— Am I that predictable?
— Kind of. Actually, I'm excited to face her again too.
— She has that effect on people. She's a fierce person and a merciless prosecutor. She's not going to hold back. Be ready.
— I know that and I'm ready for it.
A bailiff appeared and went towards them.
— The trial will start soon.
— Thank you. — Phoenix said, then he turned back to Ren. — Are you ready, Ren?
— Always. — Ren replied. Phoenix chuckled.
— That's the spirit. Well, let's go.
— I'll see you from the defense bench, okay? You're going to stay at the defendant's seat, alright? — Ren said and Yusuke nodded. — Okay. Leave it to us.
"Time to put an end to Madarame's scheme. It's showtime!"

Tokyo District Court. Courtroom Noº 8
12:00
—
The crowd was in havoc, commenting about the new case in question until the crowd promptly went silent when the Judge pound his gavel.
— Court is now in session for the trial of Mr. Yusuke Kitagawa. — Said the Judge.
— The prosecutor is ready, your Honor. — Sae answered.
— The lead defense, Ren Amamiya is ready, your Honor. — Ren answered.
— The defense assistant, Phoenix Wright is ready, your Honor. — Phoenix replied.
Sae gave a smirk and looked at Phoenix.
— It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Wright. I've heard many incredible things about you. — The Judge said happily.
— Believe me, it's my pleasure, your Honor. — Phoenix replied and then turned at Sae and smiled. — It's a pleasure to face you again in court, Prosecutor Niijima.
— It's my pleasure to face you too, Mr. Wright. I hope your apprentice is ready because I'm not going to back it down.
— He's ready, trust me. I'm also ready. I hope you're ready as well, Prosecutor Niijima.
— Yes, I am.
The Judge looked at Phoenix, then turns at Sae, and did it back and forth before asking:
— Are you two acquaintances? — The Judge asked, surprised.
—Yes, we are. Is there any problem, your Honor? — Both Phoenix and Sae asked.
— No! Of course not! It's just… You two seem…
— Your Honor. I… We do believe that's not important now. We're here for the trial, not to comment on our personal lives. — Phoenix and Sae said, interrupting the Judge. Ren couldn't help but snicker with that. Faking a cough to cover his laugh, Ren looked at the Judge and said:
— Your Honor, I do believe it's time to resume the trial. To avoid any inconveniences…
— Yes. You are absolutely right Mr. Amamiya.
Phoenix muttered a thank you to Ren, who nodded his head in answer.
— Now then, your opening statement, Prosecutor Niijima, if you please.
— Very well. For starters, the defendant Mr. Kitagawa opened a lawsuit against Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame. As we speak, the lawsuit is still in process.
As I was informed, this trial was a civil trial against Mr. Madarame, not a criminal trial against Mr. Kitagawa.
— That's true. It wasn't until he opened legal action against his own pupil for defamation and his friends for unlawful entry. Recent investigation can prove that.
— So, there was an unlawful entry, huh? And defamation no less. As much as that can be treated as a civil trial, I don't see the point of why are you here, Ms. Niijima.
— That's the point, your Honor. During the investigation, it was found evidence of plagiarism and forgery. And all of them point toward Mr. Kitagawa.
Ren and Phoenix flinched and the public commented about the new information.
— Order! Order, I say! — The Judge ordered hitting his gavel. — Prosecutor Niijima, that means…!?
— Mr. Kitagawa built a scheme of forgery and tried to pin the blame on his own mentor to escape from his crimes. That's the reason for this trial today.
— Hold it! That's preposterous! — Phoenix shouted.
— Preposterous, you say? I think that's plausible Mr. Wright. Especially due to the fact Mr. Madarame reported his personal security company to take care of Mr. Kitagawa and his accomplice. — Sae rebutted.
— She meant Ann, right? — Phoenix asked Ren.
— Yes. — Ren replied, then he said, — But why did Mr. Madarame call the security company until now? I doubt he was waiting for Mr. Kitagawa to commit a mistake.
Sae smirked as she adjusted her hair with her hand.
— He did commit a mistake. On that day, Mr. Kitagawa and his accomplice were found as they were working on their latest work. That's the only plausible explanation. Or do you have any other explanation, Mr. Amamiya? — Sae asked with a confident smirk.
— Hm…
"Chief Nick noticed something I haven't yet. Better go along with it for now."
— If I have to, are you going to listen to me? — Ren asked.
— If you don't claim something so ridiculous as some defense attorneys do sometimes.
"Ouch, that hit the spot." Ren thought as he looked at Phoenix, his face twisted slightly in anger. "And Chief Nick doesn't seem too happy to hear that."
— If you're done with your meaningless blabbering and daydreaming Mr. Amamiya, I do suggest proceeding with the trial.
— As much as I hate to interrupt the proceedings, that's an important matter to discuss.
Sae clicked her tongue annoyed.
— If you think that's important.
Ren nodded and said:
— I hate to waste your time, and the court time as well, but the way you say that it was almost like you're certain of your point.
— I'm sure I am, especially after my investigation.
Ren murmured and nodded.
— If that's the case, then I want to hear more about your investigation.
— Very well.
— Prosecutor Niijima…?
— I do agree with Mr. Amamiya on this point. I want to call the first witness: Detective Richard Gumshoe, please take the stand.
A minute later, Gumshoe stood on the stand.
— Please state your name and occupation for the register of the court.
— Richard "Dick" Gumshoe. I'm a detective from International Affairs. — Gumshoe said a bit down.
— Detective, are you alright? — Phoenix asked.
— Yes, pal. I am. It's just—
Sae slammed the bench, shutting Gumshoe up.
— Detective, I do suggest for you not let your personal feelings interfere with your work. After all, it's your job to report what we have discovered.
— Yes, sir! — Gumshoe said, still unsure of himself.
— Detective, if you don't mind, please testify about what you and Prosecutor Niijima had found. — Ren asked.
— Okay, pal. — Gumshoe stopped and took his notepad, and started his testimony. — According to our investigation a few things were found. At first, we found the same evidence as you guys. Then we examined the house and there were signs some doors were forced. Moreover, there is also proof of forgery. All of this evidence points against you guys!
Ren stood quiet for a moment, processing all the information Gumshoe had told.
— Vague, isn't it? — Phoenix noted.
— Not too vague, if you remember some things, but yeah I do agree. — Ren said.
— You know what to do.
— Press him to extract information, and especially avoid any traps from the prosecution.
— Always one step further. Go on, Ren. Show them what you got.
Ren cleaned his throat and looked at Gumshoe.
— Okay. Detective Gumshoe, please repeat your testimony. — Ren asked.
— Yes, pal! — Gumshoe exclaimed, then he said. — According to our investigation a few things were found. At first, we found the same evidence as you guys.
— Hold it! "At first we found the same evidence as you guys." You meant that painting, the old brush, the sketch book, a few stained clothes, and an old artbook, correct? — Ren said.
— Right, pal! This evidence was found and sent for analysis. Then comes the issue.
— Why…?
-Well… According to the reports, all of them belong to Mr. Kitagawa, but there were also the fingerprints of Mr. Madarame on some of the evidence, especially the painting.
— When you meant the painting, you meant…? — The Judge asked.
— The stolen "Sayuri", sir.
Everyone started to comment about the new information and the Judge pounds his gavel once to silence everyone.
— Detective, are you claiming the famous painting of Madarame, the "Sayuri"…
— Yes, sir! It was found in Mr. Kitagawa's closet. — Gumshoe exclaimed with an angry face.
— So, it was Mr. Kitagawa who stole the "Sayuri". — Said the Judge thoughtfully.
Rem slammed the bench, looking at the Judge.
— You Honor, let's not jump to conclusions lightly. That itself proves nothing, it could be a counterfeit, or a mere replica of the original "Sayuri". — Ren pointed.
— Sorry, pal, but the fingerprint results indicate it was Mr. Kitagawa who held the painting. Moreover, there were only his fingerprints on the painting. It can be only him, the person who stole the real "Sayuri". — Gumshoe said with a puppy look plastered on his face.
— And I asked personally to analyze the painting. According to the results of a quick test, it was clear that was the real one, however, I asked for the forensics to perform a full test to be safe. Also, the rest of the evidence was analyzed and the results were clear. It matches Mr. Kitagawa's fingerprints and his artwork with his sketches matches his style. All the evidence points to him. Also, the studio was only used by Mr. Kitagawa himself. — Sae explained calmly as ever, keeping a serious frown.
— She overturned the tables quickly. Way too quick. — Ren noted.
Phoenix grunted, but nodded in agreement.
— So, all the evidence points to forgery. I see… Mr. Amamiya, you may continue your cross-examination, although that testimony just now was quite compromising for you itself. — The Judge said.
— I do understand that, but I still want to cross-examine the detective. Detective, please continue your testimony.
— Yes, pal… Then we examined the house and there were signs some doors were forced.
— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — Some doors were forced… isn't that a little odd, considering if we went to the Atelier with the permission of Mr. Kitagawa itself, so it wouldn't be possible for us to make our way towards the place.
To Ren's surprise, Gumshoe laughed.
— Good one, pal. But there are fingerprints over the door, and all of them belong to you guys.
Ren looked with suspicion at Gumshoe.
— Are you sure of that? — Ren asked with a cold tone, making Gumshoe flinch in surprise.
— The forensics have found fingerprints over the door, and all over the studio. That shows it was you guys who were there. — Gumshoe quickly replied.
— We were invited, so it's normal to have our fingerprints over the place, especially in the studio.
-If that's the case, why does it have your fingerprints on the lock of the door? — Sae asked as she slammed the desk.
— What!? That's the first time I heard that! — Ren said, flinching.
— Hmph. For me, that's just a poor excuse from the defense. Here. — Sae showed a file. — That's the fingerprint results from the front door and from some other areas of the atelier.
— I see. The court accepts it as evidence.
Ren started to sweat nervously as he saw Sae mercilessly striking him over and over again.
— Still, that alone proves nothing. You can claim anything you want to; you don't have evidence to support your claim.
Sae smiled as she fixed her hair.
— I do have evidence.
— What!? — Ren and Phoenix exclaimed in disbelief.
— Your Honor, I want to submit this. — Sae said, giving another document.
— And that is?
— It's the forensic analysis results from the door in question.
— Hmm… According to this, the door locks were forced!
Ren flinched with that sudden revelation. The crowd chattered furiously as the Judge hit his gavel to calm them down.
— Order! I will have order! Ms. Niijima, are you sure of that? — The youngest attorney asked.
— Yes, I do have. I asked the forensics to check it twice. — The prosecutor replied.
— Very well. I do accept this as well as evidence. — The Judge closed his eyes thoughtfully. — Mr. Amamiya.
— Yes, your Honor?
— This case becomes more and more difficult for you. Are you sure you want to continue the cross-examination?
Ren nodded his head in affirmation.
— Yes, I want to continue my cross-examination. — Ren replied calmly as ever. — Detective Gumshoe, please continue.
— Yes, pal! — Gumshoe said. — Moreover, there is also proof of forgery. All of these points against you guys!
— Hold it! Detective.
— Yes?
— Can you explain to me what this proof is? I'm sorry for asking, but I'm kind of in the dark here.
Gumshoe scratched his head nervously.
— Detective…?
— Detective Gumshoe, please present the proof, or I'll do it by myself. — Sae said.
— Ren, I don't like this. — Phoenix said.
— I know. Me either. — Ren said, nodding his head in affirmation.
Gumshoe sighed and showed a photograph.
— Here, we have a photo of a painting, a photo of "Sayuri", your Honor. — Gumshoe said.
— Hmm… "Sayuri", you said. May I ask, what's the problem with that? — The Judge asked.
— That photo shows one "Sayuri", your Honor. — Sae explained.
— What do you mean by that, Ms. Niijima?
— That's a copy of the original "Sayuri". A replica. And that was found under the bed of Mr. Kitagawa.
The public went into havoc and the Judge pounds his gavel to silence them.
— Are you sure of it, Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked.
— Yes. The original "Sayuri" was found inside Mr. Kitagawa's wardrobe. Also, the second painting was sent for analysis at the same moment it was found. According to the results, the painting resembles very much the "Sayuri" itself, however, there wasn't anything sketchy under the painting on the canvas. That's the proof the second painting is a mere replica of the original.
Ren and Phoenix flinched and the public went into another havoc.
— Order! Order! Order! I will have order! — The Judge said, quickly pounding his gavel. — Ms. Niijima, what is the meaning of this?
— It's quite simple, your Honor. Mr. Kitagawa stole the "Sayuri". With that, we make a copy of the "Sayuri" to sell to anyone who will be interested.
— But why? Why doesn't he sell the original itself? — The Judge asked.
— To earn a high income, it's better to sell a replica of Sayuri and claim it as an original, since no one will doubt that; since he's the apprentice of Madarame. Plus, he can sell several replicas to interested people. Since it's Madarame's original, everyone will do anything to have this painting, especially with the story the painting possesses.
— I see… Hm…
— Ren, this is bad. She had made the case against us. — Phoenix said.
— Not yet. — Ren said. — Ms. Niijima. As much as you've made a valid point, there was a flaw in your claim.
— Oh. What is it?
— How is that related to us? How is Mr. Kitagawa related to us in this scheme? As long as you can't prove that you only had a case against Mr. Kitagawa.
Sae smirked.
— Detective, if you please.
— Yes, sir… I hate to say that, pal, but we've found your business card in the belongings of Mr. Kitagawa. — Gumshoe said.
— Dammit! — Ren exclaimed.
— Mr. Amamiya! Why'd the defendant have your business card? — The Judge asked, irritated.
— Ren…
— It's okay. — Ren said. — The answer for that it's quite simple, your Honor. Ms. Takamaki was invited by Mr. Kitagawa to pose for her. However, she asked for me and Mr. Sakamoto to accompany her, since she felt nervous. On the day in question, Mr. Kitagawa was working on his new work and Ms. Takamaki had caught his attention by bringing me and Mr. Sakamoto to the atelier.
— So, you came to Madarame's Atelier without being invited by Mr. Kitagawa. — Sae said.
— And yet, he allowed us to get in, as long as we didn't disturb him at his work. During his break, he had an argument with me and Mr. Sakamoto, and he expelled us from the atelier. I gave him my business card if he needed legal help.
— I see… Well, Mr. Kitagawa, can you confirm that? — The Judge asked. Yusuke looked at Ren who nodded at him in affirmation.
— Yes, I can, your Honor. On the day in question, Takamaki-san had brought Amamiya-san and Sakamoto-san with her. However, I did allow them to enter the atelier. Also, I expelled them some hours later.
— May I know why you have expelled them? — Sae asked.
— Er… We have a disagreement about a certain matter. We argued and I asked both Sakamoto-san and Amamiya-san to exit the atelier and not come back, otherwise, I will press charges against them for unlawful entry.
— I see… Your Honor, I do believe that explains the matter, although that doesn't lift any suspicion of them.
— Ms. Niijima? What do you mean by that?
— Your Honor, we have to consider the possibility they may have an argument due to disagreements about their scheme.
— Objection! Your Honor, the prosecutor is making baseless claims with Mr. Kitagawa's current statement. I do demand the defendant present proof of her claim. — Ren said.
— Mr. Amamiya, I never said that was the case unless you have evidence proving otherwise. As long as the true nature of your argument with Mr. Kitagawa is not revealed, my claim is only a mere supposition, only a possibility.
— Objection overruled. Mr. Amamiya, please be careful when you object. — The Judge said.
— Yes, your Honor.
— Ms. Niijima, please continue.
— Certainly. On the day in question, they went to the atelier. As Mr. Kitagawa worked on his new work, he and Ms. Takamaki, Mr. Sakamoto, and Mr. Amamiya were discussing the details of his scheme. Then they had an argument, which caused a temporary rupture in their deal. Then, Mr. Amamiya gave his business card to Mr. Kitagawa to keep in contact. A few days later, Mr. Kitagawa escaped from the atelier with Ms. Takamaki, and then he contacted Mr. Amamiya. Then we know the rest of the story.
The Judge went thoughtful, as he looked at the courtroom.
— As much as I see it, it seems this is an open and shut case, however, I still have some doubts about it.
— It seems like it, your Honor. However, I need to remind you that it's rather simple if we look carefully at the evidence. It's a case of plagiarism and forgery from the very beginning. As for the doubts we'd have, they will vanish as this trial goes on. — Sae said.
— Ms. Niijima, I do believe that's enough. I can practically give my verdict already. — The Judge said.
— If you truly believe that, then I do not have any further objections.
— Very well. Mr. Amamiya, does the defense have any objections?
Ren went silent, thinking carefully.
— Ren, if you have something to say, you better do it. The Judge is convinced that's a closed case already.
— Do you think that is an open-and-shut case? — Ren asked.
Phoenix thought and shook his head.
— Honestly, it's far from it. I don't believe that's an open-and-shut case.
Ren nodded in affirmation.
— You have noticed it too, huh?
— Yeah. That case is well-built for the prosecution, way too well-built in my opinion.
— Every case has its particularities. Noticing them is one of the keys to finding the truth. There's something wrong and not only that, there is a flaw in the prosecution's logic.
— So, what are you going to do?
Ren smiled.
— Always prepare for the worst, so you can find a way out of it.
Phoenix smiled.
— What are you waiting for? Go for it.
— Mr. Amamiya and Mr. Wright, are you two alright? — The Judge asked.
— Yes, your Honor. We are. — Both members of the defense team replied.
— Do you have any objections?
— Yes, we do. — Ren replied and looked at Sae. — Ms. Niijima. I have noticed your case it's well made, maybe way too well made. Although, there is a flaw in your logic.
— Oh, is that so? What are you going to point to? "How do you meet Mr. Kitagawa?" "How'd you find out about his scheme?" I'm waiting for your answer.
Ren shook his head in the negative, then he looked at Sae.
— Let's revise your logic so far: Mr. Kitagawa had the "Sayuri" in his possession. Not only that, he started a scheme of replicating the "Sayuri" to make an easy way to get a huge amount of money. Then we went in, participating at some point as his accomplices, aiding to keep his operation covered until Mr. Madarame had found it all. Is that correct?
— According to the evidence so far, that is correct.
— Well then, if that's your logic so far according to the evidence, that creates three major contradictions.
— Th-Three!? — The Judge exclaimed, surprised. — What are these contradictions? Explain this at once.
— Very well. The first contradiction lies in the fact that Mr. Madarame found the "Sayuri". Your Honor, How did Mr. Madarame find the "Sayuri" in the first place? The painting was found in the closet, not only that, he had to have touched the painting.
— Well, that contradiction is quite simple to answer. Madarame had simply investigated Mr. Kitagawa's room when he ran away with Ms. Takamaki. He managed to find it during his search over the place. Also, the forensics team had established the painting was there at the time.
— So, are you saying the most famous painting of Mr. Madarame was on his reach all the time?
— Yes, that is what the prosecution believes.
— If that's the case, why was the "Sayuri" discovered sooner? There have been several chances for Mr. Kitagawa to be caught in the possession of "Sayuri".
— The defense has raised—
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — Mr. Amamiya, I need to remind you Mr. Kitagawa is a skillful manipulator who managed to keep the painting in his possession for years.
Ren laughed.
— What is so funny? — Sae asked.
— It's funny the fact you haven't noticed two flaws in your claim. — Ren replied.
— What?
— What do you mean by that, Mr. Amamiya? — The Judge asked.
— Let me explain, alright? The first flaw comes with the fact Mr. Kitagawa was in possession of "Sayuri". As you may know, your Honor, Mr. Kitagawa was not the only apprentice of Mr. Madarame. He lived with several individuals. If some of Madarame's pupils had found Mr. Kitagawa with the "Sayuri", that would be a huge finding, since the "Sayuri" was stolen. Not only that, but that also will be a huge scandal, not only for Mr. Kitagawa but for Mr. Madarame as well.
The public commented about it for a moment until the Judge rapidly pound his gavel, silencing everyone.
— Mr. Amamiya, please explain your argument. — The Judge ordered.
— Your Honor, the "Sayuri" is a highly esteemed piece of art. If anyone had found it, their name would become famous in no time, so isn't odd during all the time Mr. Kitagawa had the "Sayuri", no one had found it in his wardrobe, not even by accident?
— When you say that… It makes sense.
— Plus, there's the second reason: Mr. Kitagawa's personality. Ms. Niijima had proclaimed he's a skillful manipulator, but knowing Mr. Kitagawa well, I can assure you that's far from the truth. I can admit he's far stubborn, and even too eccentric at times, but I can assure you he's not a master manipulator as the prosecution claims.
— How can you be so sure about that? There's no proof proving your claim. — Sae answered.
— There is no proof that supports your claim either. Ms. Niijima, you should have known that your claims don't hold water. Especially since you're the one making such claims without evidence. — Ren rebutted calmly as always.
Sae bit her lower lip in frustration and glanced at the young attorney. The Judge hit his gavel.
— The defense has raised a valid point. But I do believe he said there are three major flaws in the prosecution's logic. — The Judge said.
— Yes, that's correct, your Honor. I do believe Mr. Amamiya still has to point and prove the other two points he claimed. — Sae said.
— Very well. I will prove my point. — Ren said. — The second major contradiction lies in the fact that the scheme was supposedly made by Mr. Kitagawa. Let's consider he had possession of the real "Sayuri" for a moment. If that was the case, why not sell the original instead of making copies? It's less risky and far more profitable for him. Remember, he needs a place to make the copies and store them without raising any suspicions.
— That is actually possible. Remember, the atelier is quite big, so hiding the copies is actually an easy thing. — Sae said.
Ren nodded his head in negation.
— Unfortunately, I can't agree with you, Ms. Niijima. Remember, all the doors except for the front and the back door, don't have a lock, so hiding those copies is an impossible task, especially at the atelier.
— However, aside from the front door, there is only one door in the entire atelier which has a lock. You may know it well.
— Yes, I do. At least according to what Mr. Kitagawa said.
— Mr. Kitagawa, what are the defense and the prosecution talking about? — The Judge asked.
— There is only one off-limits door. That's the storeroom where Madarame-sensei keeps his old works and several blank canvases and materials. Even I am not allowed even to get in there. Only he possesses the key.
Sae smiled.
— But, according to Mr. Madarame, you and Ms. Takamaki went into that deposit that day. How is that possible?
— That is something I do not know, Ms. Niijima. The lock suddenly opened and I was dragged inside by Takamaki-san. — Yusuke replied, glancing at the floor.
"At least Yusuke doesn't know it for now. That would have been a nightmare." Ren thought, glancing at Yusuke and giving a reassuring glance.
— I see… But as far as we know, the only way possible for you and Ms. Takamaki to get in is only if Mr. Kitagawa forced his way inside the deposit. — Sae said.
— As much as I think that is not possible, that is the only plausible explanation. Mr. Amamiya? — The Judge asked.
— Your Honor, for now, the defense doesn't have any objections, although it is still a tricky question. I do believe that is something I will solve during the proceedings. — Ren said.
— I see…
— Still, the defense still believes Mr. Kitagawa's innocence. If he had such a scheme, why hasn't someone discovered it, especially when he has colleagues sharing the same house as him?
— And what? That is also another possibility, Mr. Amamiya. Only that. — Sae said.
— I do know that, but you also showed a possibility, a possibility you still have to prove.
— Fair.
— But I'm not done yet. As I stated before, such a scheme should not be possible, considering the circumstances around Mr. Kitagawa, keeping such a scheme should be impossible.
— Although that's only a mere possibility, Mr. Amamiya. Mr. Kitagawa may have found a way to conceal his scheme.
— As long as you don't have evidence to back up your claim. That's only a mere possibility you had raised and only that.
— So, both defense and prosecution only have theories about the whereabouts of the "Sayuri" and what is the defendant's purpose with the painting in question.
— Unfortunately, that seems to be our situation, your Honor. — Sae said.
— Mr. Amamiya, you said you have noticed three major flaws in the prosecution logic and you've pointed out two of them. What is the third flaw?
— It's quite simple, your Honor: The involvement of Mr. Kitagawa's accomplices in this supposed "scheme". If that was the case, how did we get into this scheme? How were we involved? I'm sure the prosecution doesn't have a proper answer. Also if we were involved, why did we need to force our way in, since we were invited by Mr. Kitagawa. Does the prosecution have a proper answer for that?
The public commented vigorously on the matter and the Judge pounds his gavel several times, regaining the order.
— Order! I will have order! Ms. Niijima, the defense has raised valid points, not only that, they have put the credibility to your logic. Do you understand the consequences of that, do you?
— I do understand, your Honor. But debunking the defense's point and proving my logic will be the prosecution's objective today.
— Very well.
— The Judge is pending to our side now, at least for now… — Phoenix said.
— Yeah, but solving this case will not be easy. It will be a tough nut to crack open. — Ren noted.
— Are you sure you can do it in one single day?
— I'm sure of it. I have to. Besides, it's more than our reputation on the line, it's our case.
— I'm sure you can do it. Good luck.
— Thanks. I feel we are going to need it. — Ren sighed. — Let's proceed.
— Detective Gumshoe. Thank you for your testimony. Your testimony was clearly revealing, in a matter of fact. — Sae said.
— Thank you, sir.
— Now, if you please, you may leave the stand.
— Are you going to call another witness, Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked.
— Yes. I want to summon Ms. Ann Takamaki to the stand.
Everyone chartered surprised as the Judge pounded his gavel to make the audience silent.
— Order! Order! Ms. Niijima! Are you calling…?!
— Yes. I'm calling one of the suspects in this case. — Sae replied calmly as ever.
— Ren…
— I knew there was a chance of her calling Ann. I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting however was her calling Ann so soon. — Ren answered Phoenix.
— Hm… Better proceed carefully. We don't know what type of trap Sae has made for us.
Ren smiled, a challenging smile.
— Well, it seems we have to walk into the trap to figure it out.
— You know there's a chance of that backfiring at you. — Phoenix warned.
— I know, but now I need to gain time. I'm sure there's something wrong with the evidence Ms. Niijima presented, and Narukami has noticed.
Phoenix nodded his head.
— Well, we need to debunk her logic and fast, with or without Narukami's help.
— Well, that's our job, isn't it? — Ren said.
— You better go all out, or we'll lose this trial.
— I know.
— Now then, the court will summon the next witness. Ms. Ann Takamaki, please take the stand.
Gumshoe left the witness stand and a minute later Ann stood on the stand. The quarter American girl looked away as everyone was commenting about her.
— Witness, please state your name and occupation to register for the court. — Sae said.
— Ann Takamaki. I'm a second-year student of Shujin Academy. — The blonde girl replied dryly.
— You were at the atelier of Ichiryusai Madarame, invited by Madarame's apprentice to model for him, correct? — Sae asked.
— Yes. That's correct.
— Ms. Takamaki! You were invited to model by Mr. Kitagawa?! — The Judge asked surprised.
— Yes, your Honor. We met at the train station when he saw me and invited me to pose for him.
— Please testify how the first session went.
— Yes… — Ann took a deep breath and stared at the Judge. — On that day, I went with Ryuji and Amamiya-kun to Madarame's atelier, by Kitagawa-kun's request. There I posed as Kitagawa-kun requested and he worked on the canvas. We talked a little during the posing until we got into an argument. Then he expelled us, saying if we come back we'll call the police, that is… — Ann went silent and mumbled. — …only I could go back under a condition.
Ann ended her testimony and looked at Sae.
— Happy now? — The blonde girl asked.
Sae nodded.
— My deepest apologies, but we don't have a choice here. — Sae said.
— So, you went to the atelier to pose for Mr. Kitagawa, huh… — The Judge said thoughtfully. — Mr. Amamiya, you may proceed with your cross-examination.
— Very well. — Ren took a deep breath and glanced at Ann. — Ms. Takamaki, can you please repeat your testimony?
— Yes. On that day, I went with Ryuji and Amamiya-kun to Madarame's atelier, at Kitagawa-kun's request.
— Hold it! On the day, if I remember, you asked us to accompany you to go to the atelier.
— Yes. I was nervous that day to go alone.
— May I know the reason, if you please? — Sae asked.
— As much as I waited for such an opportunity, I was nervous since I didn't know Kitagawa-kun personally. I simply couldn't go on my own.
— It's understandable since you're a young girl and walking unprotected alone around these streets is quite dangerous for someone like you. Imagine going alone into an unknown place… — The Judge said.
— Yeah… I wasn't so sure about it, so I asked for them to come with me. — Ann said.
— I see. Now, please continue your testimony.
— There I posed as Kitagawa-kun requested as he worked on his canvas. We talked a little during the posing until we got into an argument.
— Hold it! Ms. Takamaki, you said we talked with Mr. Kitagawa, correct? — Ren asked.
— Yes. Actually, it was more like we tried to start a conversation with him. He was way too focused on his work.
— Yes. I remember that.
— If that was the case, how did that conversation attempt go into an argument? — Sae asked.
— Well, after some time, Kitagawa-kun couldn't simply continue. He was tired after working so much on his new painting. Then we asked about some rumors we heard about Madarame-san. — Ann explained.
— R-Rumors!? — The Judge asked surprised.
— There are some rumors about Mr. Madarame, about plagiarism. — Sae explained.
— What!?
The public becomes uneasy, commenting on Ann's last statement. The Judge hit his gavel, silencing everyone.
— Order! I will have order! Ms. Niijima! Ms. Takamaki! Are you two…
— Yes. There are rumors about Madarame. Most of them are about plagiarism, your Honor. — Sae explained.
— Ms. Takamaki…
— The rumors talk about how Madarame was abusing his pupils. We were worried about him, so that is why we asked him if the rumors are true or not.
— And that was enough to upset Mr. Kitagawa? That's highly improbable. — Sae said.
— Your Honor, if I may have a word? — Yusuke said calmly.
— Yes, you may.
— At the time, I was under the influence of Madarame. That's why I took… drastic measures.
— Drastic measures…? — The Judge asked.
— That is something we will determine during the cross-examination, your Honor. — Sae said, interrupting Yusuke. — Mr. Kitagawa, please return to your seat.
Yusuke went back to the defendant's seat.
— Ms. Takamaki, your testimony.
— Okay… Then he expelled us, saying if we come back he'd call the police, that is… — Ann went silent and mumbled. — …only I was going back under a condition.
— Hold it! — Ren went silent, looking at Ann. The blonde girl felt uncomfortable with the gaze of the frizzy-haired attorney.
— H-Hey! Say something! — Ann said irritated.
— Sorry! …It's just… How I should proceed with that line of questioning…
— You should proceed as normal, you know. — Phoenix said.
— You will understand when I go to question Ann. — Ren said, sweating nervously. — Sorry about my behavior, Ms. Takamaki. Now then, do you care to explain the events of that specific moment?
— Yes, I can explain. Kitagawa-kun was furious with our questions and he threatened to call the police because of you and Sakamoto-kun.
— Since you both weren't invited by Mr. Kitagawa. — Sae said, remembering Ren's and Ann's statements.
— Yes. But the worst part comes now.
"Oh, boy! I do have a bad feeling about this!" Phoenix thought, seeing how Ren and Ann were tense.
— And what is it? — The Judge asked.
— Kitagawa-kun said he was not going to call the police on us, only if I… I… Ugh! That's so embarrassing!
— Please Ms. Takamaki, there is no need to be embarrassed. — The Judge assured.
— But you don't understand it, your Honor. It's not something I can say out of the blue. — Ann said.
— I assure you, no one will judge you if you tell us what happened.
Ann looked at Ren who nodded at her in an assuring way. The blonde girl breathed heavily for a few seconds before resuming her testimony.
— Kitagawa-kun wanted me… to pose nude.
The courtroom fell into an awkward silence after Ann's statement. Phoenix, Ren, and Sae started to sweat nervously as they slowly turned their glance at Ann, who was staring at the ground embarrassed. The Judge looked perplexed at the high schooler girl before shouting perplexed and surprised:
— WWWWWWWWWWWWHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTT!?
Everyone started to slowly comment until that became a loud argument and random comments about the case.
— Order! Order! Order! I will have order! — The Judge yelled furiously.
— Mr. Ren Amamiya! Is that a joke, isn't it? — Sae asked, disconcerted and irritated.
— As much as I want to say it is, and to push this topic aside… The answer is no. It's not a joke. — Ren replied, disconcerted as well.
The silence fell again into the courtroom, and everyone glanced at Ann.
— H-Hey! Why is everyone looking at me like that?! — Ann exclaimed surprised.
— Ms. Takamaki. Are you entirely sure of what you have said?
— Of course, I do! Or do you think I'll lie about something so… — Ann sighed in frustration.
— Well… Er… Your Honor. — Ren called.
— Yes, Mr. Amamiya?
— As much as that situation is rather… problematic and even troublesome, I do want to direct everyone's attention to the real issue here.
— And what is it…?
— Why would my client ask something so absurd to Ms. Takamaki in the first place?
— Are you implying…!? — Sae asked, surprised.
— I'm not implying. I'm merely pointing out a possibility. Why did Mr. Kitagawa make such a proposal in the first place? It's not of his nature to make such a claim or request without a good reason.
— Are you implying these rumors about Madarame are true!? — The Judge asked in disbelief.
The public commented vigorously as the Judge hit his gavel, trying to calm everyone.
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — This is absurd. Are you claiming Mr. Kitagawa tried to force Ms. Takamaki to pose nude to not denunciate you two, Mr. Sakamoto and you Mr. Amamiya because he was threatened by Ichiryusai Madarame, his guardian and mentor!? Do you know the witness had clearly stated an attempt of blackmail made by your client!?
— Yes, I do know that well. I was there, remember? The real problem is why someone like him had done something like that. Remember, Mr. Kitagawa is a privileged person, the pupil of Ichiryusai Madarame, so he doesn't have any issues in his life. So why did he have done this in the first place?
— Perhaps he's someone with dubious intentions.
— I'm sorry, but that's not possible, Ms. Niijima. If that was the case, Madarame was gotten rid of him at the first chance that appeared. Remember, Madarame has a reputation to uphold, so if he keeps someone as dubious as you claim…
— Then his reputation will be put into question. Still, having someone so talented at his side is more an advantage than keeps him away.
— I do agree with you, so why does Madarame keep Mr. Kitagawa with him? Because he needs someone to plagiarize and use.
The public commented on the possibility Ren has raised.
— Order! Order! So, the defense is saying the defendant, Mr. Kitagawa, is being forced to work under Mr. Madarame's will…
— Think carefully about it, your Honor, it makes sense under analysis. Mr. Kitagawa is an orphan, not only that, he was raised and treated under Madarame's care for years. It's not that absurd to consider he was psychologically abused by Madarame, forced to do a few things against his will, for his mentor's sake. — Phoenix said. — That also includes threatening people who were willing to discover the truth behind it.
— Are you two insane? Mr. Kitagawa is not the victim here. He's the real culprit. If that's the case, why did he make such a proposal in the first place?! — Sae argued.
— That's a valid point, but remember, Madarame is a very influential person. So if anything goes without his consent, he will do anything to make things in his favor again. — Ren said.
— Still, that's an indecent and unethical act on Mr. Kitagawa's part. To force Ms. Takamaki to pose nude for him…
The Judge closed his eyes thoughtfully, thinking about his next move.
— Ms. Takamaki.
— Yes, your Honor? — Ann asked.
— On the day you were with Mr. Kitagawa when Mr. Madarame called the police for you two. You went there to pose… nude for him, correct?
— Yes, your Honor. — Ann replied.
— Then, you went there of your own free will, correct? — Sae asked.
— Yes, I did, Prosecutor Niijima.
— If that was the case, why didn't you and your friends tell the police?
— Ms. Niijima, you may know already, but it's their word against Mr. Kitagawa's word at the time being. If they tried anything, Mr. Kitagawa could've easily contradicted them, and it would've been over for them. — Phoenix said.
The public commented about it and the defense's logic and the Judge hit the gavel, silencing everyone.
— Ms. Niijima. The defense has raised a good point. How do you explain that?
— Your Honor, I need to remind you there's evidence that contradicts the defense's claim. The existence of "Sayuri" itself in Kitagawa's room is very incriminating. Not only that, the lock of the entrance was forced that day by them no less. All of that incriminates them.
— That's true. There is evidence against the defendant and their accomplices. And that directly contradicts the defense's logic. As long as there's evidence backing up the prosecution's claim, there's no room to doubt the main fact, aside from the defendant's behavior.
— Still, isn't that odd for such behavior? Why does he have such behavior as that if he's nothing to fear about it? Unless…
— Are you still pressing on this point? It's useless, you know? — Sae said.
— Perhaps, but theories and questions are all I only have aside from evidence, and until I can clear all these doubts, I have to question any aspect in the court and find the answer for them. — Ren replied calmly as ever.
The public commented about that and the Judge hit his gavel, silencing everyone.
— Well, I see that line of questioning is not going to lead anywhere. Mr. Amamiya, do you believe that is important?
— Yes, I do believe, your Honor. But it was as you said, without any evidence, all of that is for nothing. That is if we don't have evidence, for the time being.
— Ren, are you sure about that move? — Phoenix asked.
— I'm sure of it. The evidence is all I have, remember. Don't worry, I know what I am doing.
— Order! Mr. Amamiya, are you saying you have evidence to back up your claim!? — The Judge asked, surprised.
— Evidence, yes I do have, however, I'm afraid I can't submit, for the time being, your Honor.
— Why?
— Because it's illegal evidence. Recording a conversation without the consent of the person it's a federal crime, your Honor. — Ren explained.
— It is true. Recording a conversation without the consent of the person isn't legal, although there are some exceptions to this case. — Sae said. — I'd believe you don't possess any of them.
— No, I don't. — Ren replied.
— Your Honor, this evidence is inadmissible.
— I'm afraid so. However, I do want to know the contents of this conversation before making a decision. Mr. Amamiya, can you disclose to this court the contents of this conversation? — The Judge requested.
— Yes, your Honor. This recording is the conversation of the day we had with Mr. Kitagawa after he finished working on his painting on that day. — Ren replied.
— What!?
The public went into havoc once again and the judge pounded his gavel several times to silence the audience.
— Order! I will have order! Mr. Amamiya, did you record the conversation of that day with Mr. Kitagawa?
— The entire conservation, your Honor.
— Well… Do you believe the entire conversation is actually important?
— Your Honor, the entire recording is important, but I want to focus my attention on the matter we're discussing now.
— The nude modeling?
— Ugh! Can you please stop talking about that? — Ann whined, begging for them to drop the matter.
— There was something, Mr. Kitagawa commented, an interesting comment after the proposal.
— Hmmm…
— Objection! Your Honor, I need to remind you this recording is illegal evidence! — Sae objected.
— I do know, however, I do believe this recording is, in fact, relevant to this trial. Objection overruled!
— What!? Your Honor, I do object to the submission of this evidence.
— Mr. Amamiya warned beforehand about the nature of the evidence itself. As the judge in charge, I determine if the evidence will be accepted in court or not. Objection overruled!
Sae grunted furiously and Ren listened to the recording.
— Mr. Amamiya, if you please.
— Yes, your Honor.
Ren raised the volume of his phone and played the recording.
[— It's no good… — Yusuke said.
— What? — Ryuji asked, surprised.
— I'm sorry… Am I the problem…? — Ann asked.
— No, not at all… It's just… I'm having trouble staying focused today. I'm sorry, but we'll have to resume this another time… My deepest apologies. — Yusuke replied.
— It's okay. — Ren said.
— No, it's not. — Ryuji yelled.
— Ryuji!
— Oh hell no! How many hours do you think you made us wait!?
— Huh?
— Mr. Kitagawa, our deepest apologies, but we have come here with another reason. — Ren said.
— Another reason? What is it? — Yusuke asked seriously.
— It's about these rumors regarding your sensei. — Ryuji explained.
— This again…? — Yusuke asked annoyed.
— We're sorry to bring up this topic, but we couldn't help but worry about you. There's something Ann commented to us we have found odd. — Ren explained.
— Yes. On that day, that painting I saw at the exhibit… You're the one who actually painted it, right? — Ann asked.
— That's… — Yusuke said at a loss for words.
— …I knew it.
— So, you also have been plagiarized by him. — Ren said.
— Your sensei seriously messed up. He just thinks of his pupils as tools. That's why he doesn't give a damn whether he steals their works or physically beats them. — Ryuji said.
— That's why it is useless to hide this from us. We already know it.
Yusuke chuckled nervously.
— You couldn't go against him, could you? I'm sure we can help you out though…
— Stop it. It's just as you all say. We're… our sensei's "artwork".
— What…? — Ren asked, confused and surprised.
— Don't misunderstand me though. I offered my ideas to him myself. As such, it can't be called plagiarism. Sensei is simply suffering from artist's block right now.
— If that isn't plagiarism, I don't know what is …
— What did you say? — Yusuke asked.
— You should know plagiarism it's not limited only to stealing works. If you consent to "offering" your ideas, and he claims them as his, that makes you an accomplice of him.
Yusuke grunted.
— Kitagawa-kun…
— Then why're you stickin' around!? All his other pupils ran away! Aren't you the only one left!? — Ryuji asked.
— What's wrong with a pupil helping out his master!? — Yusuke asked indignantly. — There are no victims here! Stop pushing your self-centered righteousness on me!
— But that still counts as stealing. If your master is caught in this scheme, you're going to be labeled as his accomplice. You can be arrested, you know that? You're in danger, can't you see?
— Still…
-So, are you okay with this? Is that okay for you to even be arrested for his sake? — Ren asked.
Yusuke stood quiet and glanced at Ren.
— I'm supporting sensei as his pupil. Where's the wrong with that? — He asked unsurely.
— I understand your position, but you can't simply support such criminal activity.
— -Enough. Don't ever come here again… If you do, I'll sue you for causing a disturbance.
— You…
— Hold it! We're not done talkin' here!
— Then you leave me with no choice! I'm reporting you two to the police.
— What!? You can't! — Ryuji and Ann exclaimed.
— Yes, I can. I asked Takamaki-san to be my model today, but I don't recall ever calling you two here!
— What the eff, man! — Ryuji said, taking a step forward.
— Ryuji, stop it! — Ann said, pushing him away.
— Calm down, okay? Please, don't report them. — Ann begged.
— I won't report you… but only under one condition. — Yusuke said.
— What's that?
— I want you to continue to be my model, Takamaki-san.
— But you said it wasn't working out today… — Ann stated confused.
— That's because I was unconsciously being modest for your sake. However, I have nothing to worry about anymore. If you're willing to bear everything to me… I will put my heart and soul into creating the best nude painting ever! — Yusuke said with determination.
— W-WHAT!? N-NUDE!? — Both Ryuji and Ann yelled.
— Ah, to think I'd be able to create a nude painting with the most ideal model! Of course, you two won't be allowed in, and I ask that you forget about our discussion today, as well. If I don't submit to sensei soon, there will be some… inconveniences. — Yusuke said bitterly.]
— Stop. — Sae ordered and Ren stopped the record. — Your Honor, I do believe that's enough. — Yes, I do agree as well.
Sae fixed her hair and glanced at Ren.
— Do you know what you have submitted? There is enough evidence against not only your client but against you and Mr. Sakamoto as well. — Ren stood quiet, as Sae gave a sharp smirk. — What's your answer to that, Mr. Amamiya? I'm waiting for—
— Mr. Amamiya, before you answer—
— Your Honor. Let me answer Ms. Niijima first. — Ren said interrupting the judge.
— What? — The Judge asked surprised.
— That was rather rude, your Honor. Interrupting the prosecutor. — Phoenix said. — Let us answer Ms. Niijima first before we answer your question, got it?
— Yes, yes… My deepest apologies, Prosecutor Niijima. — The Judge apologized, embarrassed.
— It's okay, your Honor. — Sae said and she muttered a thank you to Phoenix. — As I was saying: I'm waiting for a proper answer since that is compromising evidence against your client.
— I do know that well, Prosecutor Niijima, but before anything, let me play the rest of the recording. If I may?
— Very well. — Sae said nodding in affirmation.
Ren played the conversation recording again, resuming from the point Ren paused.
[— Wait a minute! Nude, meaning it'll be without any clothes right!? — Ann exclaimed in disbelief, then she yelled indignantly. — Why are things suddenly escalating like that!?
— Because those are my terms. — Yusuke replied victoriously.
— But that's—
— Hey, ain't that bad!? What if Madarame—
— Sensei is out during the afternoon while the art exhibit is on, so I can use this place freely… I should buy more art supplies. — Yusuke said interrupting Ryuji.
— Will you give me a second here!? — Ann yelled.
— Of course, I'm willing to wait. I'll make time according to your plans. But please come before the art exhibit ends.
— No! That's not what I meant! Why are you not listening?
— Because we won't be listening to you. — Ren muttered furiously.
— Sensei will be returning home soon. We're done for today. Takamaki-san, I'll be waiting for you to contact me. Now then, you all can go.
— W-Wait… — Ann said.
— Hold it! — Ryuji shouted again.
— Let's go. — Ren said bitterly.
— But…
— We're not welcome here. — Ren replied.
— At least someone here has some sense. — Yusuke said with a smile.
— Hey, Ren. Don't give up so easily. — Ann said.
Ren sighed.
— In case you change your mind, here. Give me a call anytime.
— Tch. As if I'll need your services… — Yusuke replied nonchalantly.
— Meow!]
— A cat? — Sae asked as the recording was paused again. — That's not relevant now. The relevant thing is the culpability of the defendant.
— Ms. Niijima, can I ask a question to the defense? — The Judge asked.
— Yes, your Honor.
— May I ask, what did Mr. Kitagawa mean by inconveniences? Also, why was he so desperate for Ms. Takamaki to pose before the exhibit ended?
— That's the point, your Honor. Mr. Kitagawa was pressured by Madarame to create another artwork.
— Objection! Your Honor, the defense is still badgering the same point. — Sae shouted.
— I do know, but that's the only logical possibility I do have at this moment. — Ren rebutted. — Besides, isn't it odd that Mr. Kitagawa is adamant about finishing his artwork before the art exhibit ends?
— That's true. Why did he have such a deadline in the first place? — The Judge questioned.
— That's exactly my point, your Honor. Why would my client have a deadline and if he doesn't fulfill it in time he will suffer the consequences? When you think about it, it doesn't make sense.
— True, if that was the case. — Sae said.
— Interesting, please tell us your thoughts. — The Judge said.
— Your Honor, may I remind you Mr. Kitagawa is the pupil of a famous artist, so it's only plausible to think he's under pressure to fulfill his assignments, also he needs some alibi to cover his scheme, wouldn't you agree, your Honor?
— That's another possibility, a valid one I need to say. — The Judge agreed.
— Still, why does Mr. Kitagawa go to all this trouble? It's rather irrational. — Ren replied.
— Perhaps he was willing to take advantage of people, tricking them to act like an innocent artists. — Sae said.
— She got some nerve; I need to admit that. To bring such an argument. — Phoenix commented. Ren nodded his head in affirmation.
— Yeah, she really got some nerve… — Ren replied.
— Noticed anything, Ren?
— Kind of. — The young attorney replied. — Ms. Niijima, you claim my client is actually taking advantage of us, correct? — Sae nodded in affirmation. — If that was the case, why does he take so much time to defend his master, Ichiryusai Madarame?
— That's a good question actually. — The Judge noted.
— Are you acting as if you don't know, Mr. Amamiya? He has a scheme, a scheme of plagiarism towards Mr. Madarame's greatest art piece, the "Sayuri". You're acting like that is not true.
— There is no evidence to support your claim. All the forensics have found is circumstantial evidence.
— Still, let's say your claim is true, that evidence proves it was him the only one who could have done that. — Sae rebutted.
— The prosecution is right. The evidence presented here is far from circumstantial evidence.
— Still, I do have my doubts about the evidence presented.
The audience commented on Ren's statement, as the Judge tried to silence everyone.
— Are you claiming the evidence presented by the police department is false? Are you out of your mind?! — Sae exclaimed furiously.
— Well, I never saw a case so well-built, not like that at least. Considering the lack of evidence from our investigation. — Ren confessed.
— I was there with the forensic team all the time. I was there when the evidence was found.
— We also were with the forensic team, but that doesn't lift any suspicions towards them.
— You got a lot of nerve to say something like that…
— I need to admit there is little room for doubt, however, even I can assure all the evidence presented in court is valid.
— Ren… — Phoenix warned.
— I know… — Ren replied. — Your Honor, I need to remind you some of that evidence wasn't found by us.
— Are you doubting my investigation? — Sae asked.
— Honestly, not your investigation, per se, but the forensic team finding is rather odd, no matter how much I look at it.
— When you say that I'm willing to raise my suspicions, but as I claimed before, Mr. Amamiya, there is only a small room for doubt.
— I do have my doubts about the evidence presented.
The Judge shook his head.
— I do believe we have all the questions about this matter.
— Your Honor, I do have only one question for Ms. Takamaki.
— Yes, Ms. Niijima? — Ann asked.
— You went a few days later to Madarame's atelier to pose for Mr. Kitagawa, correct?
— Yes. Why?
— That means you went there to fulfill your part of the proposal, right?
— Correct.
— Then why did you do that, since you're innocent?
Ann sighed.
— Amamiya-san…
— Amamiya-san…?
— I need to remember I do have a criminal record, and I'm on probation, remember? — Ren said.
— That would be troublesome for you. — Sae noted.
— I do admit that probation is kinda annoying… But I don't have a choice, it's that or spending two years in Juvie. — Ren admitted.
— I see… Well, Ms. Takamaki, can you testify about the day in question? — Sae asked.
— Yes, I can. — Ann said. Taking a deep breath, she looked again at the Judge and started to testify. — On that day I went to pose for Kitagawa-kun. I was nervous, so I took drastic measures. Then I walked all over the place, embarrassed. I wandered around and Kitagawa-kun followed me. That's all.
— So, you've gone to pose nude for Kitagawa-san, huh…
— Yes…
— Well then, your cross-examination, Mr. Amamiya.
— Of course, your Honor. Ms. Takamaki, if you please.
Ann nodded and started to testify again.
— On that day I went to pose for Kitagawa-kun.
— Hold it! So, you really went…
— Yes. I remember talking with you guys. You were also against it until we realized we didn't have a choice there.
— True. It was tense that day.
— As much as I appreciate the fact you two are getting along well, I need to remind the defense that this is a cross-examination, not a place to chat. — Sae said.
— True. Mr. Amamiya, please don't drift from your cross-examination.
— I'm sorry, your Honor. I'll try not to repeat that. — Ren said. — So, you went by your own free will, correct?
— More like I went under pressure since there was a chance of you going back to jail… — Ann said.
— I see… Please continue your testimony.
— I was nervous, so I took drastic measures.
— Hold it! What kind of measures?
— Well… I kinda wore all the clothes in my wardrobe. I become a ball of sheets. — Ann said with a silly smile.
— Well, when I think this case will be normal, then comes Ann with that. — Phoenix commented.
— Yeah… I couldn't believe it when she said that… — Ren said.
— Ms. Takamaki did you… — The Judge said, perplexed.
— Well, I was running out of options and I was frightened to pose nude in front of Kitagawa-kun. — Ann explained. — Of course, I had to take all of that off… It was hot.
— How did she…? — Phoenix asked, sweating nervously.
— Don't ask. I have no idea as well. — Ren replied.
— Well, aside from this… pellicular part, it was obvious she went to pose to Mr. Kitagawa. Please continue your testimony.
— Okay. Then I walked all over the place, embarrassed. — Ann said, summarizing her testimony.
— Hold it! You walked over the place…? — Ren asked.
— I was so nervous posing nude… I simply ran away. — Ann explained.
— Even if you agreed to do it for your friends' sake? — Sae asked.
— Imagine if it was you, Ms. Niijima. Would you accept such a thing so easily?
-Perhaps not. Although I received some indecent proposals before. Some of them are even worse than yours.
Ren noticed Phoenix gave an assuring smile at Sae, who smiled back at him.
— Ms. Niijima, and Ms. Takamaki, I can sympathize with your situation. — The Judge said.
— Yeah, it was tense, your Honor. I mean, if I knew it was to pose nude in the first place…
— That's not relevant now. Please continue, Ms. Takamaki. — Sae said.
— Okay. I wandered around and Kitagawa-kun followed me. That's all.
— Hold it! So, you wandered around? I know you were nervous, but… — Ren commented.
— Yeah, but if I was to pose nude at least I want a place with privacy, although I couldn't find one.
— What do you mean by privacy? — The Judge asked.
— A place with a lock. So no one could enter.
The public commented about that as the Judge pounds his gavel several times trying to calm down the audience.
— So, are you saying…
— Hey! Don't get me wrong! It's just…
— Your Honor, if I may? — Yusuke called.
— Yes, Mr. Kitagawa. You can talk. — The Judge said.
— At the time, Takamaki-san was very nervous, something I can't complain about, due to the nature of my request. And besides, I was nervous too, since that…
— Since what, Mr. Kitagawa? — Sae asked.
— Since that was the first time I was going to paint a nude person.
The public commented about Yusuke's confession and the Judge silenced everyone by pounding his gavel.
— So, that was your first work with a nude person, correct? — Sae asked.
— That is correct. — Yusuke replied.
— I see. Mr. Kitagawa, why didn't ask Ms. Takamaki to pose nude in the first place?
— Well, I was nervous to ask such a thing, also I don't want to be disrespectful towards her to ask such a request. Also, there are her friends.
— Then why did you ask now, after blackmailing them!? — Sae exclaimed, pounding the bench with both hands.
— Well… I… Was… Desperate…
— Desperate? For what? For not submitting a new artwork to Madarame?
— Yes… You don't know him as I know… — Yusuke replied.
Sae clicked her tongue in annoyance.
— Your Honor, I do believe the defendant is lying.
— Objection! — Ren shouted. — Your Honor, why would the defendant lie if he came to answer the question you made to Ms. Takamaki of his own free will?
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — Perhaps that was your tactic to make the defendant more human.
— Objection! That's just baseless claims, Ms. Niijima.
— Objection! And where is your proof? All we can know is that Mr. Kitagawa is obviously lying.
— Objection! — Phoenix shouted. — Ms. Niijima, bluffing isn't your style.
—!
— Mr. Wright, what is the meaning of this? — The Judge asked, surprised.
— Your Honor, I need to remind you Mr. Kitagawa is an eccentric person, but I can assure you he's been totally earnest here as he answers to the court. If not, why is he here in the first place? He has a lot to lose, and his personal and professional life is on the line here.
— And? Several people do the same, knowing the dangers they have to deal with as they come to solve this legally. What makes Mr. Kitagawa different? — Sae asked.
— Mr. Kitagawa is only a teenager, a teenager with a bright future ahead of him. Why make him willing to risk all he does have in the first place?
The public commented on Phoenix's statement.
— Order! — The Judge ordered as he pound his gavel. — As much as this argument is valid, that same argument drifted from the original purpose.
— My deepest apologies, your Honor. — Phoenix, Sae, and Ren said.
— Still, I do have a question for you two, Ms. Takamaki and Mr. Kitagawa.
— Yes, your Honor? — Ann and Yusuke asked.
— If that was the case, why then does Mr. Madarame make a lawsuit against you two for invading his place and for blackmail? — The Judge asked.
— Well… — Ann said.
— No, Takamaki-san. I will answer that. — Yusuke said determinedly.
— Mr. Kitagawa? — The Judge asked surprised.
— Takamaki-san found the only place is off-limits for everyone in the entire atelier, except for Madarame itself. The storage.
— Why is the storage off-limits? — Sae asked.
— At the time, even me and Takamaki-san didn't know.
— Didn't? So that means you went in.
— Yes, we did.
The audience commented about it and the Judge pound his gavel.
— Order! Order! So, you went into the storage room… Ms. Takamaki, can you testify about it?
— Of course. I arrived there first. At the time the room was locked. I talked with Kitagawa-kun until Madarame-san appeared and asked us rudely to get out there. Then the lock suddenly fell on the ground and, nervous, I went in, dragging Kitagawa-kun with me.
The Judge was thoughtful, as Sae was smiling confidently.
— That's not good. — Ren said.
— But we don't have a choice here. — Phoenix said. — What are you going to do?
— Well, I'll do my best. And I have a plan.
— Being bold, aren't we?
— Well, that is the only way.
— Mr. Amamiya, your cross-examination. — The Judge said.
— Yes, your Honor.
Ren nodded to Ann, who started to repeat her testimony.
— I arrived there first. At the time the room was locked.
— Hold it! So, the door was locked. Mr. Kitagawa, can you explain how the door was locked?
— Mr. Amamiya! The one being cross-examined is—
— Your Honor, may I remind you the defendant is the only one who knows about the door in question at the time. Let him explain. — Sae said, interrupting the Judge.
— Very well, Ms. Niijima. Mr. Kitagawa.
— Yes. It's a door with a detailed painting of a peacock tail with golden details on the feathers. The door is locked with a big hefty lock.
— And at the time, did Ms. Takamaki try to force the lock?
— What!? — Ann yelled indignantly.
— Objection! — Ren shouted. — Your Honor, that question is not related—
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — As much as I hate to be rude, even you know Mr. Amamiya, that's not true.
— The prosecution's objection is sustained. — The Judge said. — Mr. Kitagawa, please answer the question.
— No. At that time, she was facing me all the time, at a certain distance from the door. — Yusuke said.
— There. Are you happy now, Ms. Niijima? — Ren asked.
— Not yet.
— Ren… — Phoenix said.
— I know. That's why I objected.
—! If that's your plan…
— Yeah, I know. Even though I know that's too risky… I just don't want to do that.
— I see…
— Ms. Takamaki, can you confirm that? — The Judge asked.
— Yeah, I was talking with Kitagawa-kun all the time. Besides, I don't know how to force a hefty lock. I'm waaay too dumb for that.
— She's earnest. — Phoenix commented.
— Yeah, she's too earnest sometimes. I'm sure she's an awful liar. — Ren commented.
— I see… Ms. Takamaki, please continue your testimony. — The Judge said.
— Okay. I talked with Kitagawa-kun until Madarame-san appeared and asked us rudely to get out there.
— Hold it! Why does Mr. Madarame act like that? — Ren asked.
— At first, we didn't know, but he was nervous, waaay too nervous. — Ann replied.
— Why was Mr. Madarame nervous about that room? — Ren asked.
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — That line of questioning is irrelevant, your Honor.
— Objection sustained. — The Judge said.
— Mr. Amamiya, instead of asking that, I do have a better question for Ms. Takamaki.
— Yes? — Ann asked.
— Why Mr. Kitagawa doesn't stop you in the first place?
— Well… Er…
Yusuke was going to reply, then Ren gave a slight nod with his head, asking him to stay in his seat.
— Ms. Takamaki, answer the question. — Sae ordered.
— I was trying to convince him to get in, but…
— But…
— He doesn't have the key.
The public commented and the judge hit his gavel several times to make the audience silent.
— Why did you go to all this trouble to end like that, then? If you knew about it.
— Wh-What!? How should I know about that lock in the first place? — Ann asked nervously.
— You were right. She's an awful liar. — Phoenix said, sweating nervously.
— I wonder if she will pursue an acting career… — Ren wondered.
— You know it is most probable for her to end up as a top model of Victoria's Secret than to become a famous actress. — Phoenix replied.
— True.
— Ms. Takamaki, don't lie to this court. Do you know about the door or not? — Sae asked.
— No! I just know on that day about this damn door, okay? Or do you have proof saying otherwise? — Ann rebutted.
— No, I don't. — Sae said.
— At least she's smart enough to act when she's cornered. — Phoenix said.
— At least that. — Ren said.
"But it's amazing how Ms. Niijima knew something was wrong with Ann's testimony. Better be careful with her." Ren thought.
— Please calm down, Ms. Takamaki.
— Okay… — Ann said, breathing heavily.
— Now, if you can continue your testimony.
— Yes, your Honor. — Ann replied. — Then the lock suddenly fell to the ground. I was so nervous that I simply went in, dragging Kitagawa-kun with me.
— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — You went into the storage room. Could you see anything there?
— No. It was too dark before Madarame-san flicked on the lights.
— I see. I'd actually have another question.
— Yes?
Ren thought for a moment before asking:
— When the lock fell on the ground, did you notice anything in particular?
— Not much… Well…
Ren gave a serious glance at Ann, who thought more carefully.
— Actually, there is one thing… I heard some "meows".
— Meows?
— That's rather vague. — The Judge said.
— Mr. Kitagawa. Do you have something to say about it? — Sae asked.
Yusuke went silent, thinking about it for a moment.
— Actually, when you mentioned it… I did also hear some "meows". Not only that, I saw a black cat inside the storeroom, when Madarame-sensei turned on the lights.
The public commented about it and the Judge hit his gavel.
— Order! I will have order! — The Judge ordered. — Please, Ms. Takamaki, add this statement to your testimony.
— Yes. I heard some "meows" there all the time. Also, I saw a cat when I was in the room.
— Objection! — Ren shouted. — Ms. Takamaki. I do believe you have concealed an important detail, although I do admit it was impossible at first thought.
— What!? — Ann exclaimed, surprised. — What do you mean by that?
— Yes. What do you mean by that, Mr. Amamiya? — Sae asked, her eyes shining with a dangerous brightness.
— Ms. Takamaki, you said you felt something following you that day, right?
— Yes… Why? — Ann asked, confused, without knowing where that was going to lead.
— Perhaps I do have the answer for that.
— You do?! — Ann, Sae, and the Judge exclaimed.
— You do? It's better to be a good one. — Morgana said inside the bag.
— Is that… a cat meowing? — Sae asked.
— Shit!
Ren opened his bag and took Morgana inside from it.
— Hey, what are you doing!? — Morgana exclaimed, surprised.
—Ladies and gentlemen from this court, I do want to present my pet, my cat, Morgana. — Ren said, showing the cat.
— Morgana!? — Ann exclaimed.
— It was him all along!? — Yusuke asked, surprised.
The public went into havoc as the Judge hit his gavel, trying to silence everyone.
— Order! I will have order! — He yelled.
— Mr. Amamiya, what is the meaning of this!? — Sae asked.
— Well, before I explain, I do believe I owe Mr. Kitagawa, Ms. Takamaki, you Ms. Niijima, and the court an apology.
— An… — Ann said.
— Apology? — Yusuke said.
— Yes, an apology. Ann, remember you said Morgana was following you all day? — Ren said.
As a bulb suddenly pops up on Ann's head, the blonde girl nods her head in affirmation.
— Oh, I do remember now! He really was following me all day! — Ann exclaimed sheepishly.
— What!? That's a lie! A lie! — Morgana yelled.
— Morgana, please behave yourself. — Ren said, seeing Morgana's agitated behavior.
— Hmph. I do expect some good food after that.
— A cat…? — Sae asked in disbelief.
— Now when you mentioned it. There was a cat on that day as well. — Yusuke said.
— What? Wait, the recording… Please present that recording again! — Sae ordered.
— Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked surprised.
— Please.
— Okay. — Ren said, playing the end of the recording.
[— In case you change your mind, here. Give me a call anytime.
— Tch. As if I'll need your services… — Yusuke replied nonchalantly.
— Meow!]
— There! I thought it was odd hearing a cat there… Wait, are you saying…!?
Ren nodded his head in affirmation and said:
— Yes, on these two specific days, my cat was in that place.
— What!? — The Judge, Ann, Sae, Yusuke, and the entire court exclaimed in surprise. Ren nodded in affirmation once again.
— Yes. On that day, I was with my cat. Actually, he doesn't behave well when he's at home, so I have to bring him along to avoid trouble.
— Hey! — Morgana exclaimed.
— And how do you explain he's there with Ms. Takamaki? You were there?
Ren shook his head in negation and smiled.
— No. That's the crux of this riddle.
— What do you mean by that?
— Morgana is very attached to Ann. Not only that, he truly loves her.
— To a point, he even follows me sometimes. — Ann said sheepishly, toying with one of her pigtails.
— What!? Lady Ann…! — Morgana whined and Ren winked at the cat.
— So, you're saying that the cat followed you all day, without being noticed by Mr. Kitagawa!? — Sae exclaimed with anger.
— Morgana probably went into my bag, when I was talking with Amamiya-kun and Ryuji. We met after classes before I went to Madarame's atelier.
— I see… But how is this cat related to this case? — Sae asked.
— Morgana loves to play with shiny things. So there's no wonder what's happened.
— Are you implying…!? — Sae exclaimed in disbelief.
— The cat…!? — Yusuke exclaimed.
— Morgana!? — Ann exclaimed in fake surprise.
— Did the cat open the lock!? — The Judge exclaimed perplexed. The public went down and the Judge pounded his gavel several times trying to regain the order. — Order! I will have order! Mr. Amamiya, are you claiming…!?
— As much as it's absurd…
— And it is! — Sae said furiously.
— That's the truth. He went after any shiny object. Remember that time, Ann, when he had to take him from that trap?
— Yeah, he totally fell in when he saw that shiny object that day. — Ann said, remembering the events of the Palace.
— How a cat managed to unlock a heavily hefty lock?! — Sae argued.
— I don't know, but Morgana is quite a curious cat. I don't doubt he's capable of doing that. — Ren said with a smile.
— He's a cute cat. — The Judge said.
— He is. — Ren said. — Now then, I can believe the facts are quite clear now.
— Morgana followed Ann to Madarame's atelier that day, and he went in her bag without her noticing it. Then he got out at some point and wandered around until he saw the only door with a lock. And he toyed with the lock until he managed to unlock the lock. And the rest is history. — Phoenix said, tapping his chin with his index finger.
— Hold it! This is absurd! How does a cat manage to unlock a hefty lock? — Sae asked indignantly.
— Sometimes, the reality is weirder than fiction, Ms. Niijima. Even I can't believe that as well, but that's the only plausible explanation.
— Proof, where is the proof then?
— Ms. Niijima, as much as I don't want to believe it, I think that's the only possible explanation. — The Judge said.
— But Mr. Madarame said explicitly you two managed to…! How!? How is that even possible!? — Sae said indignantly.
— What happened to Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked.
— Madarame… He said both managed to unlock the door as they were facing him. I found that statement odd at first… Now everything makes sense… — Sae said, sweating nervously.
— That's a risky move, Ren… — Phoenix said.
— But the only thing I have… — Ren said. — And it's working, at least for now.
— Order! Ms. Niijima, are you entirely sure of that? — The Judge asked.
— Yes. Although when he said that he was so nervous that day he barely could say anything, so I asked him to testify once again.
— And his testimony changed… — Ren said.
— Yes, here's the transcription. — Sae said, presenting the file with Madarame's testimony to the court.
— And here's the recording of the testimony.
— This court accepts both pieces as evidence. — The Judge said. — Now, Ms. Niijima, if you please.
— Yes, your Honor.
Sae played the audio.
[— It's unacceptable! I was there when they went in.
— And how were they able to get in since the door was locked?
— I don't know! They were facing me all the time when the lock suddenly opened by itself!]
Sae stopped the audio.
— I see.
— Although I do have to raise the possibility he was out of him, due to his anger.
— It's a valid point. Mr. Amamiya.
— I do admit that's a valid point, but I need to remind you Mr. Madarame admitted he doesn't see my client, and Ms. Takamaki unlocked the door. — Ren said.
— Hmmm… — The Judge said, becoming silent, lost in his thoughts.
— Maybe we have a chance. — Phoenix said.
— I'm not sure… — Ren said.
— Why?
— Look at the Judge. He's convinced the case is already over.
— This case has a lot of riddles but even I need to admit there is enough evidence against the defendant. Moreover, even with these inconsistencies, I do believe the prosecution has a plausible explanation for all of them, correct? — The Judge said.
— Yes, I do believe I have, at least in the realm of possibility. — Sae said. — At the time, Ms. Takamaki managed to indeed unlock the door somehow. Not only that, she managed to convince Mr. Kitagawa to come with him using the pretext of posing nude for him. They went to that door and managed to unlock it. At the time, Mr. Madarame arrived at his atelier and caught them. They simply managed to trick him into giving them enough time before the lock fell on the ground, messing with their plan. In desperation Ms. Takamaki went into the deposit, dragging Mr. Kitagawa with her. That's the only plausible explanation.
The public commented on the prosecution's theory, as the Judge tried to silence everyone by pounding his gavel.
— Order! I will have order! Mr. Amamiya, the prosecution has raised a valid point. I will handle my verdict now unless you do have proof saying otherwise.
Ren went thoughtful, searching over the evidence.
"Do I have proof? If I have, the case will be solved easily. But I don't have evidence backing me up. And I'm not willing to bluff, not at this point. I went too far to end up bluffing."
— Your Honor. The defense doesn't have evidence. — Ren said.
— Ren, what are you doing? — Ann asked.
— So, you don't have evidence? — The Judge asked.
— Not physical evidence, but I do have proof. — Ren said.
— What kind of proof?
— Let's revise the testimony of Ms. Takamaki so far. She went to pose for Mr. Kitagawa until she got nervous and wandered around. There's something odd with this statement, wouldn't you agree?
— Yes, now that you mentioned it…
— Yes. On the previous visit, Ms. Takamaki, Mr. Sakamoto, and I went straight with Mr. Kitagawa to one of the rooms of the atelier. How does Ms. Takamaki know the door's location if she doesn't know where she was going in the first place? Explain that, Ms. Niijima.
— Order! Order! — The Judge shouted, pounding his gavel several times to silence the court. — Ms. Niijima…
-Your Honor, Mr. Kitagawa knew the door location, he probably went there with Ms. Takamaki. — Sae said.
— If that was the case, why did he bother to follow Ms. Takamaki in the first place? You even said he forced Ms. Takamaki to pose nude, or are you backing tracking your own words? — Ren asked.
— I don't go back to my word. Ms. Takamaki convinced Mr. Kitagawa.
— You're not sure of your theory, Ms. Niijima. If I was you I do suggest rethinking your claim. — Phoenix said.
— Why you…
— Mr. Wright is right. You don't sound so sure of yourself, Prosecutor Niijima.
To the surprise of the court, Narukami appeared, making the court go into a messed up havoc.
— Order! Order! Mr. Narukami, what brings you here? — The Judge asked, genuinely surprised to see Narukami.
— Narukami! What are you doing here? — Sae asked, irritated with the presence of Narukami.
— I came here to help you, although it seems you don't need my help. — Narukami said nonchalantly, looking away.
— Don't come with teasing and jokes. Tell me why are you here?
— As I said before, I'm here to testify, after all, I investigated the atelier with the forensics team, before your arrival. — Narukami said with a smile.
— You…
— Mr. Narukami! You are here to testify about the investigation!? — The Judge asked.
— Yes, your Honor. I'm here for that.
The audience commented on the new information and the Judge hit his gavel.
— Ms. Niijima.
— Yes, your Honor?
— Why haven't you called Chief Detective Narukami to testify?
— He wasn't assigned to this case, that's the main reason. Moreover, he went into the investigation of his own free will, ignoring all the proceedings. He's an unreliable witness, your Honor.
— Still, I'm here for a good reason, Ms. Niijima. I can assure you. — Narukami said with a serious frown.
— If you're saying…
— Wait a minute, Mr. Narukami, you investigated the scene of the crime!? — The Judge asked, surprised again.
— Why are you surprised, your Honor? Ichiryusai Madarame is a famous person, a case involving him will pique my interest. After all, as the Detective King, I will not let such an opportunity pass. Also, I had other motivations as well. — Narukami said with a cryptic smile.
— Mr. Narukami, I'm sorry for asking, but why are you here? — Ren asked.
— Mr. Amamiya, you may know why I am here.
— You mean the results of the analysis have already…
— Exactly. Your Honor, I do have the results of the analysis of the investigation.
— Well…
— Objection! — Sae shouted. — Narukami, what is the meaning of this!? I already have the results.
— True, and that's why I asked to perform a second analysis.
— What?! — Sae and the Judge exclaimed.
— I wasn't informed of that! — Sae said.
— I do know, and I owe you not only an apology but also owe you a disclaimer from the forensics team.
— What? — Ren and Sae asked.
— Perhaps it's time for me to testify. Your Honor, if you allow me to testify I will explain everything. — Narukami said.
The Judge closed his eyes thoughtfully thinking about Narukami's proposal.
— I will allow the Chief Detective to testify. The court will take a ten-minute recess. During that time I demand that the prosecution prepare the next witness. I do suggest for the prosecution and defense reevaluate their theories as well.
— Yes, your Honor. — Both Ren, Sae, and Phoenix said, bowing to the Judge.
— Court is now in recess! — The Judge said, pounding his gavel.
