A/N: I want to wish every one a Merry Christmas, wether you celebrate it or not. I know that it's a special time and a lot of us are feeling the pressure in these hard times so I figured I'd do a little Burzek Christmas moment to cheer everyone up, hope you guys like it.
Kim was curled into the couch with a book while Adam was settled at the kitchen table, surrounded by boxes and wrapping paper. The kids were asleep already, a surprising feature considering Dylan had indefinite energy since the calendar turned to December 1st. She had offered her help in wrapping the presents, but Adam had refused any and all kind of help from her, so she stopped fussing over it and let him do it.
"Don't you think you went overboard this year?" Kim chuckled as she eyed the pile of already wrapped presents next to his feet.
"Don't you think you're over doing it?" There were really too many presents in her honest opinion.
"Come on darling." He sighed. "It's been a tough year; I think they've earned some extra gifts."
"Extra?" She cocked her eyebrow with a smirk.
"Extra." He echoed with a chuckle. She knew he agreed with her about going overboard but Dylan was no longer believing in Santa Claus and good behavior and grades were conditions for presents.
"He's going to flip." She grinned.
"He's been asking for that damn thing for the last year and his grades are good, I think he's earned it." The offending piece of gaming was sitting on the table, waiting to be wrapped.
"He has been working hard to keep those grades up." At eleven, he had started playing basketball and keeping his good grades were the condition for playing.
"Did you get the crayons for Allie?" Adam looked around the kitchen but couldn't see them.
"Yeah, I did." She got up and headed for their bedroom. "I went to Lake View Art Supply and I kind of went overboard."
"And I'm the one who's overdoing it?"
"Come on Adam, you've seen what she can do." Allie's room was filled with paintings and drawings on her walls and they could barely get her out of her room to eat when she started doing her thing.
"I don't know where she takes that artistic side of hers."
"Definitely not from you." Kim laughed candidly. "You can barely do a stick figure."
"Very funny."
"I am. So, tell me." She placed her purchases on the table for Adam to wrap. "What did my husband get me for Christmas?" She leaned against the table with a cow smile.
"Who said I got you anything?" He teased.
"Because you always do, I just haven't found it yet."
"I knew that you'd be looking for it, so I left it in more capable hands." He smiled triumphantly.
"Damn it, Atwater." She had totally ignored her gut to grill him about it and now she'd have to wait until morning to find out what she was getting.
"That was far too easy." He cackled. "How about you head on to bed and I'll finish up in here?"
"Are you sure you don't need any help? It would be faster if I did a few of them with you."
"I'm fine Kim, you've had a really long day, you need to get some rest."
"Fine." She sighed. "I know when I'm on the losing side of an argument. I love you and I will see you in the morning." She kissed the side of his mouth and headed for bed. She knew that she'd probably crash from the long day at the 21st. Crooks and criminals didn't take off for the holidays and Christmas eve was no exception. She checked on the kids who were sound asleep before turning in.
Adam finished wrapping all of the kids presents, placing them under the tree before going to check on Kim, wanting to make sure she was sound asleep before he went to his truck to retrieve it. The first he had to pick up from the store and the second he had gotten delivered to the district to be stashed away by Trudy. The two of them had given it back to him respectively after he was sure Kim had left for the day. It was always easy to pick something for her because the one thing that was most important to her was family and he had found this website that did some framework and sent it directly to your home, so he had picked some pictures of her with the kids and himself and gotten an arrangement done for her to put in the living room wall, but he had gotten her a little something special on top of it. It was past midnight when Adam slipped into bed, pulling Kim into his body. He couldn't wait to see the kid's reaction to all the things they had gotten them, but mostly how she would react to hers.
When Adam woke up the following morning, he could hear voices coming from the living room but when he turned on the other side, he realized that Kim wasn't in bed with him anymore. He ran his fingers through his unruly hair before getting up and slipping some pants on and padding into the living area where he found the kids bickering over the present, trying to figure out what was in them and he found Kim in the kitchen making her annual Christmas brunch.
"Merry Christmas." He wrapped his arms around her waist and kissed the crook of her neck.
"Thanks babe, how'd you sleep?"
"I woke up and you were gone. Why didn't you wake me?"
"Because it was late when you came to bed and I knew you would be hungry when you woke up." She smiled as she kept her eyes on the food.
"I'm always hungry darling." She couldn't help the laugh bubbling from her chest.
"I know. How about you go keep the vultures away from the presents while I finish making the food?"
"On it." He slipped around her and navigated his body around hers enough to be able to give her a proper kiss while she cooked.
"Merry Christmas to you too." She winked as him as he left for the living room where the two voices of her kids were mixed with her husbands who was having fun making them try to get what they were getting this year.
"Stop trying to guess what's in those boxes Dylan, you'll never figure it out." Allie called after her brother.
"I'm sure I can guess a few of them."
"If you keep touching those boxes son, you're going to end up getting nothing." Adam threatened playfully.
"You can't do that dad; I have the grades to prove it." He said smugly.
"That Ruzek smirk only works on your mom kid." Adam, cackled. Kim was notoriously known for letting Dylan get away from pretty much anything every time he flashed the same smile as his dad, but Adam never fell for it, having perfected it himself first on his mom and now on Kim.
"She falls for it so easily."
"Come and eat before I change my mind and bring all your presents back to the store." Kim called the three to the table.
"How does she do that?" Dylan hissed at Allie as they sat down.
"I'm a cop and a mom, I hear everything." She whispered to Dylan's ear, kissing his cheek as she sat down for them to enjoy breakfast as a family. Allie chatted about her latest artistic project while Dylan talked basketball with Adam, wishing he was able to make it to a game with him." Adam and Kim exchanged a smile as they ate, happy to be able to have both their kids excited about that kind of stuff. Tradition had it that the kids cleared the table and Adam took care of the dishes since Kim had cooking duties and she waited for them in the love seat, her feet tucked under her, a cup of hot chocolate in hand.
"I think it might be time to open the presents." Adam announced as he sipped his coffee.
"About time." Dylan sighed dramatically, making Allie laugh.
"Shut up or mom will make good on her threat." She shoved him forward and he took his spot front and center in front of the tree.
"How about we start with Allie?" Adam grabbed the first present and gave it to his oldest.
"Allison, dad." She rolled her eyes but accepted the wrapped box with a smile. She pulled the paper off a large stack of canvases for her artwork.
"Thank you, dad." She sprung to her feet and hugged him.
"Got to keep that creativity flowing." He kissed the top of her head and smiled at Kim.
"I have ton of ideas." Adam loved seeing that twinkle of pure happiness in her eyes when it came to her art and he would go to any lengths to keep that happiness there.
"Keep them coming." Kim pulled her into her side. Adam continued to give the present to the kids, wanting to keep the best ones before giving Kim her present. The kids were happy with everything they got but Adam could see Dylan's expression fade as the pile did the same, so he handed both kids their biggest present to open at the same time and the two of them reacted just as he predicted. Dylan swore he had the best parents in the whole state of Illinois for getting him the new PS5 while Allie's fingers ghosted the different mediums in the art kit Kim had gotten her.
"Who are the last three for?" Dylan looked at the two boxes and one envelope next to his dad's feet.
"That one is for your father." Kim was on her feet and handing Adam the envelope, but Adam pulled her into his side as he opened it to reveal season tickets for the following year.
"Holy fuck." His grinned like a kid. "Is this for real?"
"The hole in my wallet says it is." Kim laughed. "Merry Christmas babe." He leaned down and he captured her lips in a heated kiss. They could hear the kids emit gaging noises in the back but neither parent cared that they were showing heavy PDA in front of the kids.
"Mary Christmas darling." He whispered as she pulled away.
"Can I have my present now?" She grinned.
"Go sit down first." He chuckled. He took the smaller box but handed Kim the bigger one first and waited for her to open it. When she became dead silent, Adam became worried she didn't like it but when she looked at him with watery eyes and a smile, he knew he had chosen right.
"When did you take those pictures?" She recognized them when but the how was what she was really asking. Most of them didn't have them looking at the camera.
"Nicole took most of them during Mother's Day and over the summer and I thought you would like them in here."
"I don't like them Adam, I love them. Thank you."
"I have one last present." She winked at Allie, who knew what was in it.
"Adam." She dried her tears away and took the small box Adam handed her.
"It's nothing." He insisted as he sat next to her on the couch.
"I don't believe you." She pulled the wrapper and opened the box to reveal a necklace. She opened it and tears pooled in her eyes.
"I know you loved your old one and when it broke it on a case, I could see that you were devastated so I had to replace it. Inside was a picture of them on their wedding day and the other one of Kim and the kids when were younger."
"Thank you." She didn't have any other word and grateful for her wonderful husband was the only way she could express it. "I love you."
"I love you too darling." After Adam placed the locket around her neck and they shared a kiss before the spent the rest of Christmas day watching movies and enjoying their new presents. Christmas was always a favourite holiday in the Ruzek household and Adam, and Kim always made it special for the whole family, the way it should always be.
A/N: Family has always been important to both Kim and Adam, no matter how dysfunctional theirs are so I love being able to write them as a fun, loving family. Please take a few seconds to review before you go, your words mean the world to me. -Sarra
