Tokyo District Court

Defendant Lobby No. 5

— I never thought the trial would end like that. — Yusuke commented genuinely surprised.

— Neither did I. — Ren said thoughtfully.

— Are you alright, Ren? — Phoenix asked.

— I'm not sure of how that is going to end. — Ren admitted, thinking about their situation. — Narukami's testimony may be our way out of this mess or our coup de grace.

— For you to actually think that, you truly are expecting the worst. — Yusuke said with a worried frown plastered on his face.

— Don't worry, I'll take us out of this mess. Besides, there's something wrong with all that evidence. You said you saw and touched the real "Sayuri", correct?

— Yes. There's no doubt in my mind. — Yusuke said.

Ren thought about that.

— If that was the case… How were two "Sayuri" found, and with your fingerprints, no less?

— Do you think that evidence was forged in some way? — Phoenix asked.

— That's the only plausible explanation. But without proof…

— Yeah. And it's not Sae's style and ethic to use such a tactic. Still, raising such an accusation is risky, Ren. — Phoenix warned.

— But I already did. All I can do now is to press further into that matter in the worst-case scenario.

— It's your case, Ren. Do whatever you want. — Phoenix said, looking at the bailiffs.

— Chief Nick, is something wrong? — Ren asked, following his mentor to a corner.

— You're risking too much. That maybe this will call his attention.

Surprised, Ren went silent and started to think about it.

— True but in this case, there's nothing I can do about it.

— I know, I know. But you know we can't simply be risky like that. If we raise any suspicions…

Ren became silent, thinking about Phoenix's words.

— You know… The best way to stay out of suspicion is actually standing under the spotlight. Everyone will hear about "Ren Amamiya" someday.

Phoenix thought about it.

—Well, perhaps you have a point here, but are you sure about this?

— As long as the name "Ren Amamiya" is related to the courts and law, the Phantom Thieves will become nothing more than an anonymous independent group of vigilantes who simply act to reform society. I will be for the Phantom Thieves nothing more than a mere pawn for them.

— Since you're actually acting in front of everyone as an attorney. Hmm…

Phoenix smiled and glanced at Ren.

— Well, well, since when did you become so sly, Ren?

— I have always been sly.

— Yeah, right. I'll believe that.

— Amamiya-san, Mr. Wright.

— Yes, Yusuke? — Both lawyers asked.

— As much as I hate to interrupt your conversation, I wish to know what's the plan for now.

— Listen to Narukami and wait for the worst. We don't know what type of news he has.

— When you say that, it's almost like his appearance is bad news.

— We can't expect the best all the time, or the worst, all we can do is wait for it and expect both.

— When you say that, all I can expect is the worst. — Yusuke confessed.

— That's why I have a plan B. All I can do now is get ready for Narukami's testimony. — Ren said.

— Court will reconvene soon. — The bailiff announced, approaching them.

— Thank you. — Phoenix said. — Well, are you ready for the worse, Ren?

Ren gave a defiant smile.

— Me? Always! Let's go! We've to prove Yusuke's innocence.

— Excited, aren't we? — Phoenix joked. — Well then, let's go!

"Our situation depends now on Narukami. Always expect the worst, to make the best move to get out of it. That's the plan for the time being. Time to press harder and proceed carefully." Ren thought as he went back to the courtroom.

Tokyo District Court. Courtroom Noº 8

13:20

— The Court will reconvene. Ms. Niijima, you may call the next witness. — The Judge said.

— Very well. Mr. Narukami, please take the stand. — Sae said.

Narukami went in and stood on the witness stand.

— Please state your name and occupation for the record of the court.

— Yu Narukami. I'm the Chief Detective of Tokyo's District for the time being. Also, I'm the leader of the Yaso Investigation Team Division of the SEES.

— You mean the SEES!? The Special Enforcement Elite Squad? — The Judge asked, surprised.

— The one and only.

— Well, well. What brings you here, Mr. Narukami? As far as you told us, you came here to bring some news.

— That's accurate, your Honor. I came here to testify about the investigation of Madarame shack, I mean his atelier. My deepest apologies.

— Although that's accurate from you. — Sae said. — I thought you came here to say something important, but I was mistaken.

— Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked surprised.

— Mr. Narukami asked me several questions, and he didn't give me any answers. His testimony is vague, your Honor. I can't simply ask him to testify without any doubts in my mind.

— I do know, however Ms. Niijima, I do believe it's important to listen to Chief Detective Narukami's testimony.

— Very well, your Honor. — Sae said conceding.

— Mr. Narukami, your testimony, if you please.

— Of course. — Narukami said, and he started to testify. — On the date of May 25; I went to investigate with the forensics team. When I arrived I took control of the crime scene and started my investigation. We found some evidence, although I was surprised to see the forensics managed to find some of them on their own. At the time, we could only find the evidence originally submitted at the beginning of this trial. Moreover, we searched the entire place before Ms. Niijima's arrival. We talked for 10 minutes until I went back to my office since I had another investigation. During my investigation, in the atelier, Mr. Amamiya and Mr. Wright were with me all the time.

Everyone became silent, processing the testimony Narukami gave.

— Do you see now, your Honor? — Sae said.

— Hmm… I see. Well, I hate to admit it but that sounds like a great waste of time.

— It's not too vague, nor is it too detailed. But still, it is vague enough to be ambiguous. — Phoenix noted.

— It seems like we need to take a look at that carefully. — Ren said.

— Did you notice anything?

— It's too ambiguous… He's doing it on purpose.

Phoenix frowned as he stared at the prosecutor.

— Sae…

— Chief Nick, if you want to assure her safety, you better intervene during my cross-examination. — Ren said, frowning as well. Phoenix nodded.

— Okay. Check every nook and crank detail in his testimony, got it? — Phoenix said as he looked at Sae.

— Mr. Amamiya, I don't see any reason for a cross-examination. Do you think it will be necessary to perform a cross-examination? — The Judge asked.

— Your Honor, the defense believes it's necessary to follow the proceedings as usual. The defense demands to perform the cross-examination.

— Very well. However, I will not allow you to question things that are not related to the subject. Otherwise, I'll have to penalize you. — The Judge warned.

— I do understand, your Honor. Mr. Narukami repeat your testimony, please. — Ren said.

— Of course. — Narukami replied and he started to repeat his testimony. — On the date of May 25; I went to investigate with the forensics team. When I arrived I took control of the crime scene and started my investigation. We found some evidence, although I was surprised to see the forensics managed to find some of them on their own.

— Hold it! So, you found the paintbrush, a few stained clothes, that painting, a sketchbook, and an old art book, correct?

— That's correct. Not only that but there are also some things found at the studio, but none of them were considered important for the case since they were simply art material for Mr. Kitagawa to make his artworks, and consequently Ichiryusai Madarame. Although I need to admit that it doesn't have any traces of Madarame's fingerprints.

— Hold it! — Sae shouted. — What do you mean there are no traces of Mr. Madarame's fingerprints in the art supplies?

— At first, I even found that odd, and I thought Madarame was using his own materials. But after the investigation, no materials with his prints were found. And with Mr. Kitagawa's testimony, only Mr. Kitagawa buys the art supplies he uses to make his artworks. — Narukami explained.

— So, Madarame doesn't use the materials disposable in his atelier.

— Yes, that is correct.

— Hmm… Odd… — Ren said.

— Truly odd… — Phoenix said.

— ? Something wrong? — Narukami asked.

— Nothing. Please continue your testimony.

— Okay. At the time, we could only find the evidence originally submitted at the beginning of this trial.

— Hold it! That new evidence hasn't been found by you no matter how much you looked over the place.

— That's correct. Why do you have any questions about that?

— Yes, I do. That evidence was found by the forensics team in the presence of Ms. Niijima, correct?

— That's correct. — Narukami said.

— Ms. Niijima… — The Judge said.

— Before you start to doubt me, I just followed Mr. Madarame's directions.

— What do you mean, Prosecutor Niijima?

— I asked Mr. Madarame about the "Sayuri" and his findings on that day Mr. Kitagawa ran with Ms. Takamaki. He said he looked over the place and found the evidence I had submitted to the court.

— So, you're saying the evidence found was actually found by Mr. Madarame? But why does he leave everything as it was? I mean, he already disturbed the place. — The Judge asked.

— A valid question. According to Madarame himself, he doesn't want Mr. Kitagawa to figure out he had found his secret.

— This is odd since Mr. Kitagawa already knew Madarame knows his "scheme" according to the prosecution. — Ren said.

— True. — The Judge said. — Ms. Niijima?

— Yes, I do agree. Still, even though I've my doubts, I asked the forensics to search over the place, according to Madarame's testimony. Still, I have to try. — Sae replied.

— But, there is one thing I don't understand, Ms. Niijima. If that was the case, why had Madarame kept the things where they were found? — Ren asked.

— Perhaps he wanted to preserve the crime scene as he had found it. — The Judge suggested.

— I really have my doubts about that, but there has to be another reason for Madarame to keep things hidden as they are. Perhaps, he had a good motive for it. — Ren said, thinking about it.

— I may have the motive you're looking for. — Sae said, smiling with renewed confidence, as she fixed her hair.

— Proceed Ms. Niijima.

— According to my research of his pupil, Mr. Kitagawa was a plain and ordinally student from Kosei High, although his potential as an artist it's unquestionable. Which makes me wonder, what makes him go to forgery? According to my research, Mr. Kitagawa was taken by Madarame at the age of 3, in his hometown. — Sae said.

— At such an age? Why?

— He's the child of an artist as well. It seems it runs in his family. His mother died due to an illness. Madarame in a gesture of kindness and altruism took Mr. Kitagawa under his care and raised him.

Everyone commented that and the Judge hit his gavel.

— Order! The court will have order! — The Judge ordered. Then he asked. — Mr. Kitagawa, is that true?

— That is correct, your Honor. — Yusuke replied.

— And there is your explanation Mr. Amamiya. Madarame tried to cover his pupil's actions but feeling his guilty conscience he tried to do the right thing. So there is your reason. Madarame tried to protect his pupil before being accused by Mr. Kitagawa. Also, that makes me wonder the reason Mr. Kitagawa did that?

— That is true. Your thoughts about it, Ms. Niijima.

— My answer to that is rather simple. I wonder, what makes Mr. Kitagawa become a forger? Perhaps he was tired of being under the shadow of his mentor? Tired of being ostracized by his mentor's fame and success. I point out his motive as jealousy of his own mentor. — Sae asked.

The public went into havoc, commenting vigorously about it.

— Order! Order! — The Judge ordered.

— Objection! — Ren shouted. — Your Honor, the prosecution is making baseless claims about my client!

— Objection! Baseless claims? There is evidence against Mr. Kitagawa, pointing out he has stolen the "Sayuri" and even has made copies of them. That's not only plagiarism but also a forgery. How do you explain that?

Ren flinched and glanced daggers at Sae.

— Ren, if you don't have proof it's useless. — Phoenix warned. — You know, what should you do in a situation like this?

— Think outside the box. Instead of thinking if Yusuke has stolen the "Sayuri" or not, I should think about the reason why he doesn't steal it. Hmm… — Ren became silent, thinking how to.

— Are you thinking of something to bluff off? — Phoenix asked. Ren smirked excitedly.

— Chief Nick, you should know at this point, I don't bluff. I do bet, and high.

Ren pounded the bench and stared at Sae.

— If that was the case, Ms. Niijima, please explain something to me.

— Go ahead.

— Instead of asking why Mr. Kitagawa's motive, I want to know something else instead: Madarame's motive.

— What…?

— Madarame could've noticed this sooner as I pointed out before. Moreover, someone under his influence could've used that to end Mr. Kitagawa's career without effort, which makes it useless to solve things by now, especially after such betrayal on his pupil's part. Mr. Kitagawa as you claimed had the "Sayuri" in his possession, under the eyes of Madarame all the time. Are you really claiming Mr. Kitagawa as a mere child could have stolen the "Sayuri" and hid for years?! If that is the case, then tell me how come Madarame never noticed that? Unless Madarame had known all along about "Sayuri", and not only that, he used "Sayuri" to pin Mr. Kitagawa!

The public went into havoc and the Judge hit his gavel.

— Mr. Amamiya, what is the meaning of this?

— Your Honor, Ms. Niijima raised a possible motive, the evidence, and the crime, however, when it comes to explaining how Madarame hasn't noticed, everything falls apart. You may have brought a good theory, Ms. Niijima but it's a theory with a fatal flaw. Because Madarame knew it all along.

— And what kind of evidence do you have?

— Simple. The conditions of that "scheme" are impossible. Mr. Kitagawa managed to steal the "Sayuri" years ago, keep it hidden, and managed to replicate it several times during all this time in his possession, without Madarame noticing it? That's highly improbable. Not to mention, any type of financial move from Mr. Kitagawa will be noticed by his guardian, since he's under his care and he obviously will notice anything out of the place. Or are you claiming Mr. Kitagawa managed to even hide that, Ms. Niijima?

— Hmm… The prosecution theory it's most probable, however, the doubts the defense created is enough to make this theory fall apart. Ms. Niijima, are you sure of the credibility of the evidence? — The Judge asked.

— Your Honor, the evidence was found in Mr. Kitagawa's room, moreover, I received the results from the forensics. If it's anyone to blame, it's the forensics team. They have made the analysis. And they performed in front of me the basics tests. — Sae answered.

— So, you're saying the forensics are at fault on that one? Even if you were assured the evidence has been checked by them? — Ren asked.

— I'm afraid if the defense is right, what'll be the case. But that'll be Narukami's fault since the forensics team was under his supervision. — Sae replied, fidgeting with the lock of her hair.

— Mr. Narukami… — The Judge called.

— I am afraid that is true, that is if I was responsible in the first place. — Narukami said nonchalantly.

— ! Are you saying…!?

— Not you, Ms. Niijima. Detective Gumshoe.

— What!? — Sae exclaimed, surprised.

— The forensics were under his orders until I arrived and after my leaving since he became the lead detective of the case. If anything goes wrong…

— Hold it! The forensics were under my orders, so it's my fault if anything happened.

— Ms. Niijima!? — The Judge exclaimed.

— I do admit the forensics team was under my orders after Narukami had left. I requested them to search over the place, especially at the places Madarame has told me about it. I don't see any reason to put the blame on an innocent man, and since the evidence is faulty, it's my fault for not noticing it. My deepest apologies.

The public commented as they looked at Sae. The Judge was going to pound his gavel when a shout rang over the courtroom.

— Objection!

— Who…!?

— It was me, your Honor. — Phoenix answered, pointing at Narukami. — Chief Detective Narukami, the forensics was under your command when you arrived at the scene. We even work together. If anyone is to blame here, it is you.

To everyone's surprise, Narukami smiled.

— Well, well. It seems the legendary defense attorney had raised a good point. Great work.

— So, are you admitting it was your fault, Mr. Narukami?

— Yes, I do admit. That's why I owe the court, especially Ms. Niijima, Mr. Wright, and Mr. Amamiya an apology. It seems like that is a great issue in this case.

— It seems we need further explanation from Mr. Narukami. — The Judge said. — Mr. Narukami—

— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — Before we proceed, your Honor, the defense believes the answer lies in the actual cross-examination.

— Mr. Amamiya!?

— Mr. Amamiya, what are you planning? — Sae asked.

— I think you have noticed it too, Ms. Niijima and Mr. Wright.

Sae and Phoenix looked at Ren surprised and he only smiled.

— Mr. Narukami, is not nice testing the others. — Ren said with a defiant smirk.

— What? — Narukami asked with a serious frown.

— It's exactly what I said, but I maybe know why you have done that.

— Or, is that so? Then let's proceed.

— Very well. Please continue your testimony.

— However, we searched the place before Ms. Niijima's arrival. We talked for 10 minutes until I went back to my office since I had another investigation to perform.

— Hold it! At that time, we're outside the atelier, if I remember correctly.

— Correct. Ms. Niijima was with Detective Gumshoe. Honestly, the poor guy is overloaded in his training. Dealing with too many cases.

— True. I heard he's taking several cases at the same time. — Phoenix said.

— Did you notice anything with Ms. Niijima and Detective Gumshoe?

— Nothing unusual, which makes me wonder…

— Wonder? Explain yourself, Chief Detective Narukami.

— Take it easy. Actually, seeing her investigating, made me wonder why she was there in the first place since I heard she's on another case.

— That case is not related to this one. At least, that is what I believe. — Sae answered.

— Hm…

Ren noticed his mentor became slightly tense. He touched his shoulder and asked:

— Are you alright?

— Yes, I am.

Ren ignored his gut feeling about his mentor, instead, he decided to focus on the trial.

— And you decided to pick up another case? — Narukami asked.

— Well, I was assigned to take this case. It's more an obligation than something I choose by will. The SIU Director assigned me. — Sae explained.

— Interesting… So everything went back at him, huh…

Ren noticed Phoenix's comment but decided to let that slide for the time being.

— I see… — Narukami said. — May I continue my testimony?

— Of course. — The Jude said.

— During my investigation Mr. Amamiya and Mr. Wright were with me all the time.

— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — Are you sure about that?

—Absolutely. I was with you two the entire time. Not only that, I've had several witnesses.

— The same forensics team. Now you mentioned it…

— What? Something's wrong?

— You've commented on a curious thing. You said that case caught your attention, right?

— Right. Isn't every day a famous artist gets involved in a scandal like that. Especially an artist involved in rumors like plagiarism and blackmail.

The public commented and the Judge hit his gavel.

— Order! Order! So, you went to investigate that day, because you were interested in the case.

— Of course. Besides, the SIU gave explicit orders for me to not interfere.

— What!? — Sae exclaimed.

— But, why? — The Judge asked.

— That's something I don't know. At least I don't know yet. — Narukami admitted.

— Odd… — Ren said.

— What's odd? — Sae asked.

— First, the evidence, then the forensics team, now the SIU… — Phoenix said thoughtfully.

— Mr. Narukami. Can you please repeat your testimony? — Ren requested.

— What? Mr. Amamiya… — The Judge said.

— Your Honor, if you please.

— Very well.

— Mr. Narukami, please repeat your testimony one more time.

— Okay. On the date of May 25; I went to investigate with the forensics team. When I arrived I took control of the crime scene and started my investigation. We found some evidence, although I was surprised to see the forensics managed to find some of them on their own. At the time, we could only find the evidence originally submitted at the beginning of this trial.

— Hold it! Well. Let's revise the facts so far. From the beginning of your testimony at this point. Ms. Niijima, you did find that evidence, correct?

— Yes, the second "Sayuri", the fingerprints over some doors, and your business card.

— And you send it straight to analysis, correct?

— Correct.

— Chief Detective Narukami. About the forensics team…

— Oh, do you want to know about them? That team is one of the best teams in the Tokyo Police Department. Not only that, they're recognized in aiding and solving several cases before. Especially cases under the SIU supervision.

— Wait a moment! Are you saying that team was working under the SIU authority!? — The Judge exclaimed, astounded.

— Is that true, Chief Detective Narukami and Prosecutor Niijima? — Ren asked.

— Yes, I do recognize a few faces. I can assure you I've worked with them before. — Sae said.

— That's correct. They're usually the team the SIU requests. — Narukami answered. — Why?

— I have stated the evidence must be faulty, but I never thought it was the fault of the forensics team in the first place. — Ren admitted.

— Why? Do you believe it was then? If not, will you point at the prosecutor? Do you not trust the prosecutor in charge?

— Objection! What kind of question is this?! — Sae asked.

— If you are implying something Mr. Narukami, you better say it out aloud. Unlike you think, I do trust Ms. Niijima to perform her duty and her role as a prosecutor, or do you have proof saying otherwise?

Narukami smiled.

— Well, no. But I do want to know Mr. Wright's opinion about that. — Narukami said.

— Why? — Ren asked calmly.

— It's okay, Ren. — Phoenix said. — Well, I do respect and admire Ms. Niijima for her dedication and passion for her work. She's one of the best prosecutors I have fought over the years. I can assure you it's not her modus operandi, nor her ethics to do such a thing. If you are still doubting her behavior…

— She'll never let a detective like Gumshoe investigate.

— What? — Ren asked, slightly confused.

Narukami looked at Sae and bowed towards her.

— That's why I owe you an apology as well, Ms. Niijima. Especially you. I'm kind of afraid to say that, but the evidence submitted was found irregular, especially the evidence you submitted at the trial.

The public started to chatter about the case again and the judge hit his gavel, in an attempt to keep the order.

— Order! Order! Order! Order in the court! Chief Detective Narukami, what is the meaning of this? — The Judge demanded.

— Exactly what I said, your Honor, although most of the evidence found is real. The answer to this issue here lies in forensic analysis.

— The forensic analysis? — Ren, Sae, and Phoenix asked.

— Yes.

— What? Is there something wrong with the forensic analysis? — The Judge asked.

— Actually yes, your Honor. When I heard about the results, I found it odd that forensics knew where to look, so I decided to investigate it. That's why I was suspicious about Ms. Niijima at first, but when I look more at it, more things aren't adding up. Ms. Niijima's statement fits with Madarame's testimony, also with the search from the forensics. Then I searched over the forensics, and it was when I found something was out of place.

— What do you mean by that? Mr. Narukami, please tell us more about your findings.

— As you wish, your Honor. I searched over the forensics, seeing thoroughly the entire staff, their past, and history. Not only that, I did a thorough research on their works. Then I found the inconsistency in their works.

— Inconsistency? You mean, their work was faulty.

— Not faulty. Actually, their work was purposely out of place, with the incriminating evidence. That itself raised my suspicion about them from a long time ago.

Sae pounded her bench and stared at Narukami.

— Are you saying the forensics team… — The prosecutor exclaimed angrily and outraged.

— Yes. They have manipulated, concealed, fabricated, and forged evidence. Moreover, it seems they have direct involvement with the SIU.

The Judge hit his gavel several times trying to keep the public contained. The audience went down with the revelation of the new fact.

— Order! Order! Order! I will call the bailiffs to expel everyone if the public will not refrain! — The Judge shouted furiously. — Chief Detective Narukami, I need to warn you you're implying something very dangerous, not only that, you're implying something that will have repercussions in the entire country.

— I do know, your Honor. That is why I was investigating and searching and researching about it all over. I'm not making lightly statements.

— Wait, that means all the cases the SIU has taken… — Sae said, sweating nervously.

— I'm afraid so, Ms. Niijima.

— How can this be!?

— Ms. Niijima? — The Judge asked surprised, seeing Sae's sudden loss of composure.

— I do my best investigating, for the sake of this system of justice and for our country, and this happens!? — Sae exclaimed furiously.

Ren stared at the woman digging her bench with her nails with fury and nervousness, when someone called her:

— Ms. Niijima. — Phoenix called.

— Yes, Mr. Wright? — Sae asked, immediately taken out of her system.

— I do believe Mr. Narukami's explanation is not over. — Phoenix replied. That was the cue for Sae to calm down and start to regain her composure. — Please continue, Mr. Narukami.

— Yes. I'm investigating the SIU at this instant, and as far as I could see, the members are out of suspicion, especially Ms. Niijima, your Honor.

— Is that true?

— I can assure you. I've investigated her files, life, and career personally, and I don't have found anything incriminating. She's out of suspicion, at least for now. — Narukami assured.

— I see… — Both Phoenix and Sae said.

Ren looked at Narukami and asked:

—Mr. Narukami, may I ask you a question?

— Of course. Fire away. — The Detective King said with a smile.

— Why didn't you say anything to Ms. Niijima during that time, or during the preparation? I know you wanted to keep secrecy about this matter, but…

— As much as I wished to ask her, I couldn't trust her. Especially since she is one of the people who were under suspicion. I need to assure her true nature before I could trust her. — Narukami replied.

Ren nodded, understanding what Narukami meant.

— Moreover, I thought all the members of the SIU were involved. I'm somehow glad I'm mistaken. That means at least there the people involved are rather on the bigwigs. — Narukami said.

The public commented about that and the Judge pound his gavel.

— I see now we need further testimony from you, Chief Detective Narukami. Please testify about your findings. — The Judge ordered.

— Very well. — Narukami said, as he fixed his blazer carefully. —The evidence found by both the defense and prosecution was submitted to the court record after a thorough analysis from the forensic team. However, since the data doesn't match up after further investigation, I personally requested a second analysis from a different forensic team. When the results came, the data were more accurate, and it took more time to come out. The team also compared both results and the data indicates most of the evidence was fabricated by them. To make sure I send it to the SEES labs to perform a third test, and the results were the same. All the evidence was fabricated by that forensic team.

— Hmm… Ms. Niijima. — The Judge called.

— Yes, your Honor? — She asked.

— Did you notice anything strange with the forensic team during the investigation?

— Nothing unusual, your Honor. They acted normal, or I should say, they behaved normally when I was there with Detective Gumshoe. — Sae replied.

— I see. Mr. Amamiya.

— Yes, your Honor? — Ren asked.

— Before your cross-examination, I should ask you the same question: Did you notice anything strange with the forensic team during the investigation?

— No, your Honor. They even aided us during the examination. — Ren replied.

— Very well. Now, Mr. Amamiya, your cross-examination.

— Chief Detective Narukami. — Ren called. — Please repeat your testimony.

— As you wish. The evidence found by both defense and prosecution was submitted into the court record after a thorough analysis from that forensic team.

— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — So, that forensic team analyzed every single piece of evidence submitted by us, correct?

— That's correct.

— And weren't you the one responsible to check it?

— As the Chief Detective, I am to some extent, but there are some exceptions. The SIU is one of them.

The public commented briefly on the newest information before the Judge pound his gavel.

— I see… Please continue, Mr. Narukami.

— As your wish. However, since the data doesn't match up after further investigation, I personally requested a second analysis from a different forensic team. When the results came, the data were more accurate, and it took more time to come out.

— Hold it. "The data was more accurate" What do you mean by that? — Ren asked.

— The data of the results of the fingerprints match several people at the first, but the inaccuracy comes from the fingerprints which were found. — Narukami replied.

— Do you mean the fingerprints on the front door, back door, and the door of the storage room, correct? — Sae asked.

— That's correct. On the front and on the back door, only two sets of fingerprints were found according to the results.

— Mr. Kitagawa and Mr. Madarame's fingerprints. — Sae said.

— Correct. However, only one set of fingerprints was found on the lock of the deposit door. Madarame's fingerprints.

— So, you're saying only Madarame's fingerprints were found at the lock. — The Judge said.

— Yes, that and some cat fur. I do believe it was from your cat, Mr. Amamiya. — Narukami said, pointing at Morgana.

— Yeah, that's his fur. Mona loves shiny things. — Ren confirmed.

— I am still wondering how a mere cat could've unlocked such a hefty lock. — Sae commented.

— It's truly a mystery. — Narukami said.

— It's not, considering how skillful I am. — Morgana said proudly.

"Yeah, right buddy… But they don't need to know about it." Ren thought. Then he noticed Narukami looking at Morgana, his face showing some sight of surprise. Ren smirked at that scene, then he frowned. "Narukami reacted… He could hear Morgana…?"

— Mr. Amamiya, as much as I love hearing your cat meowing, I do ask for you to ask him to behave.

— Very well. Morgana, please behave. — Ren said.

— I always behave, unlike Ryuji.

"What do you have against Ryuji?" Ren asked mentally, with some annoyance.

Narukami was still looking at Morgana, then he shuddered and looked at the Judge.

— Your Honor, if you excuse me, can I continue my testimony? — Narukami asked, still baffled.

— Yes, you may proceed.

— Thank you. The team also compared both results and the data indicates most of the evidence was fabricated by them. To make sure I send it to the SEES labs to perform the third test, and the results were the same.

— Hold it! Why haven't you brought it to the SEES labs in the first place? — Ren questioned.

— Well, to be honest, I didn't want to be hasty and jump to conclusions too fast. Even with my suspicions, I gave the benefit of the doubt but when the results came, however…

— I see. So, you asked the forensics of SEES to perform to make sure of the results.

— Yes. As much as they're under my disposal, they're my last resort in most cases. I can't simply call them when they're working on more important cases we're investigating. You can understand that, right?

— Yes, I can.

— Well, I will continue my testimony. All the evidence was fabricated by that forensic team.

— Hold it! As much as I know that, I just want to be sure.

— If you have doubts, I can submit their testimony when I interrogated them after I arrested the entire team. — Narukami said.

— That won't be necessary. — Ren said.

— I have a question for you. — Sae said, interrupting them.

— Fire away, Ms. Niijima.

— When you questioned them, did you figure out who is the one behind all of this? — Sae asked.

— Unfortunately not. They simply haven't said anything about who their boss is. I think things were more complicated than we thought.

— I see…

The Judge hit his gavel and said:

— Well, before we continue, I want to ask something.

— What is it, your Honor? — Narukami asked.

— That evidence was the only thing that was fabricated?

— No, your Honor. The results of "Sayuri" and the evidence related to it were fabricated too.

The public was going into havoc when Narukami raised his hand, making everyone quiet.

— As I was saying, the fingerprints of both "Sayuri" are from Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame. Moreover, the brush is indeed from Mr. Kitagawa, but it is more like a souvenir than an everyday tool, so the paint samples don't match. And about the "Sayuri"…

— Yes? — The Judge asked.

— Both are mere replicas of the original. According to the analysis, both have the same traces, although they don't have a sketch under the final result, indicating that it was made following the original. Moreover, it was made by the same person according to the analysis.

— What!? — Sae exclaimed.

— I was surprised too, but it seems someone here believes in the rumors. — Narukami said, looking at Ren.

— Mr. Amamiya… — Sae said.

— Mr. Amamiya, can you explain yourself? — The Judge asked.

— My client and Ms. Takamaki saw what was inside the storeroom. Although, even I couldn't believe it when I heard about it.

— Mr. Kitagawa and Ms. Takamaki… — Narukami said thoughtfully.

— The storeroom was full of paintings. More specifically, the "Sayuri".

The public commented about that, looking at the benches.

— Is that true?

— I can't believe it?

— The rumors can't be real!?

— How's that even possible?!

— Order! The court will have order! — The Judge said, pounding his gavel several times regaining the order once again.

— Mr. Kitagawa, is the defense's claim true? — Sae asked.

— Yes, it is true. — Was Yusuke's answer.

— But, how can that be? I thought Madarame couldn't replicate the "Sayuri", since the original it's lost. Moreover, the "Sayuri" was stolen according to the rumors. — The Judge said.

— That's why I was doubting the evidence, your Honor. The mere fact of the "Sayuri" being found in such a place is too convenient. — Ren said.

Sae averted her gaze and Ren noticed Phoenix's worry about the prosecution.

— Moreover, I do believe there was someone who tried to deceive us from the very beginning.

— Madarame. — Narukami said.

— Well, as much as I found absurd how things have gone, I do believe we need to investigate further into this matter. I will ask for another day of investigation. I demand both prosecution and defense to investigate these matters. — The Judge said.

— Ren! This is no good! — Phoenix said.

— I know… — Ren said. — If the Judge asks to postpone it to tomorrow…

— All our efforts will be in vain!

— Now, the court will be—

— Objection!

To everyone's surprise, it was Sae who objected.

— Ms. Niijima!? What is the meaning of this!?

— Asking to postpone the trial… that will not be necessary. Besides, since the original forensics team was involved in fabricating evidence, that will be raising the suspicions of the responsible behind all of this. Moreover, I do believe you have all the files with you, right, Chief Detective Narukami?

— That's right.

— Your Honor, can you concede a recess of two hours for both defense and prosecution to prepare themselves? Not only that, I want that recess to prepare the next witness.

— A new witness?! Who is that new witness? — The Judge asked.

— The source of all this issue. The prosecution demands Ichiryusai Madarame to testify!

The public went into an uproar as the Judge tried to calm the audience down, pounding his gavel as fast as he could.

— Ms. Niijima, are you sure about that?

— Absolutely. I can assure you I can do that. I just need two hours.

The Judge closed his eyes, thinking about it.

— Can you perform in one hour? — The Judge asked.

— As much as I wanted two hours, only one hour will be sufficient. — Sae replied.

— Mr. Amamiya?

— The defense doesn't have any objections, your Honor. — Ren said. — We just want one thing.

— Yes?

— The defense demands a search in the storeroom in Madarame's atelier. I do believe there's something there.

— Ms. Niijima?

— Madarame has made that area off-limits, legally speaking. But in this situation, I do believe it's necessary to search the entire atelier one more time, including the deposit. — Sae said.

— So, the prosecution has no objections to the defense request?

— No, your Honor. The prosecution rests.

— Very well. The court will take a recess of one hour. During that time, both the defense and prosecution will prepare to take the next witness. As for you Chief Detective Narukami, you may examine the atelier with the SEES forensics.

— Very well, your Honor.

— Now the court will adjourn for a recess. — The Judge said, hitting his gavel.

Tokyo District Court

Defendant Lobby No. 5

— It seems Madarame will be in court today… — Yusuke said.

— Are you alright? You're shaking… — Ren asked.

— Kind of. Madarame is very influential in the art world. He will find a way to not testify. And if that happens, our efforts…

— That will not happen. Knowing Sae, she will not let this happen, not with all of that happening. I'm sure of that. — Phoenix said. — If something happens, I know something's wrong, and if that happens…

— We should get ready for the worst. — Ren said.

— So, what can we do? — Yusuke asked.

— Get ready for the worse. Get ready for anything.

— Ren's right. — Phoenix said. — We should prepare ourselves. I wonder what is going to happen.

— So, what's the plan if Madarame appears? — Morgana asked.

— Well, my friend… The answer made him spill the beans. If he wants to deny it, I do have a plan B.

— That sounds like a plan. — Phoenix said.

— You meant that plan? — Narukami said went into the defendant's lobby. Getting close to them, he crossed his arms and looked at Yusuke. — It's a good plan, but if I were you I'll count on cross-examining Madarame, instead of going with such a plan. That usually works for Phoenix.

— Well, you will never know. — Ren said, shrugging. — Besides, knowing our actual situation, I'm expecting the worst.

— Wow, you really are a pessimist, exactly like Wright and Edgeworth have said.

— Yeah, I know that… — Ren said in disappointment. — But, because of that I know what to do in the worst-case scenario. Always expect the worst, knowing how to handle it and counterattack it in the best way.

— A fine philosophy, I need to admit. — Narukami said. — Well then, I…

— Something wrong, Narukami? — Phoenix asked, seeing the Detective King becoming quiet all of sudden.

— Prosecutor Niijima.

Sae came in and bowed to Narukami, who bowed back. Then she bowed at Phoenix and Ren, who also bowed at the prosecutor.

— Prosecutor Niijima, what a surprise. What brings you here? — Ren said.

— Yes. It's rather surprising to see you personally again. What makes you grace us with your presence? — Phoenix said. Sae smirked with the exaggeration of Phoenix.

— Mr. Wright, it's nice to see you, but I'm here for business, I'm afraid.

— I see. Can you tell me what bothers you? — The Turnabout Terror said with a serious frown.

— The fraud of the evidence involving the forensics team. My deepest apologies for what happened. — Sae said.

— It wasn't your fault, Ms. Niijima. I'm afraid that's something beyond your power. — Narukami said, trying to tranquilize the prosecutor.

— Still, I still have the responsibility when I take a case. This is supposedly something that couldn't happen, especially in court.

— Sae… Prosecutor Niijima. As much as I do understand your situation and trust me, I do understand, you simply can't blame yourself for it. Sometimes there are some occult powers behind the scenes manipulating everything. All we can do is play with the cards and make them make a mistake to win this game. — Phoenix said. Sae smiled at him.

— You're always making some poker allusions to raise people's moods. — She commented. Then she snapped to Ren. — Well, I'm here to give a warning: Don't expect Madarame to testify. Even I have some issues bringing him here.

— I'm expecting that. That's why I do have something on my sleeve. — Ren replied.

— I'm waiting for it. As much as I do want to talk and try to solve this issue, I need to wait for Madarame. Except for the worst. — Sae warned.

— Narukami. — Phoenix called.

— Yes?

— Can you do us a favor? When you look at the atelier, can you search for places Madarame is related to somehow?

— I can see what I can do, but I can't make promises, y'know. — Narukami said as he left the lobby. — Well, I'll see you guys later.

After Narukami left, Sae looked at Ren.

— I do hope you have a good plan on your sleeve, or it'll be the end for you two. — Sae said with a serious frown. — Don't expect any mercy from me. If you excuse me.

Sae left the defendant's lobby and Phoenix saw the platinum-haired woman with concern.

— Sae…

— Chief Nick, you'll be alright? — Ren asked.

— Yes, I will be. — Phoenix replied. — Well, we better be ready for anything.

— I can only hope you can find a way. — Yusuke said.

— Yes, you're right. — Ren said. He held his chin, thoughtful.

"Plan B should solve everything in the worst-case scenario but I should keep it on my sleeve and call it at the proper time. The real issue lies in the matter of whether Madarame will appear or not. That will define the ways of this trial. Better get ready. It's showtime!"

Tokyo District Court. Courtroom Noº 8

15:00

— The Court will now reconvene. Ms. Niijima, Mr. Amamiya, I do expect you have studied the situation so far, as well as you have studied the evidence presented by Chief Detective Narukami.

— Yes, I have your Honor. — Ren and Sae replied.

— Very well. Now then, may the court call the next witness. — The Judge ordered.

— About that…

— Yes, Ms. Niijima?

— The witness had refused to testify. As much as I tried to convince him, he called his lawyer and remained at his right to be silent.

— But, Ms. Niijima…

— Of course, I warned him of the risks of refusing to testify, but he refused the subpoena.

— So, it's a case of refusal of a subpoena then.

— So, it seems he's hiding something. — Ren said.

— It seems like it.

— Very well, if the witness refuses to testify, then we'll proceed. This trial has reached a conclusion. As much as the evidence presented here was faulty from the police department, the updated results brought by Chief Detective Narukami prove the inconsistency in the prosecution's logic. Moreover, the evidence isn't enough to convict Mr. Kitagawa due to its ambiguity, so the prosecution has failed to prove Mr. Kitagawa guilty. With that, this court finds the defendant…

Before the Judge could announce his verdict, someone went into the court and walked straight to the witness stand.

— My deepest apologies, but I couldn't help listening to this abhorrent thing you dared to call a trial…

— Y-You're…! — The Judge said seeing the person on the witness stand.

— Madarame… — Yusuke said.

Ren stood quiet, looking at the middle-aged man who was visibly furious.

— …And dare to call it innocent, a convicted person. — Madarame said, pointing at Yusuke. — I hereby accuse Yusuke Kitagawa of plagiarism and forgery, since he's the one who has stolen the "Sayuri" and tried to pin his crimes on me.

The public went into havoc, as the Judge hit his gavel furiously.

— Order! Order! Order! — The Judge yelled. — Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame, I thought you had refused the subpoena.

— I was directly advised by my legal counselor to not answer anything since I was out of conviction, but it seems this court can be easily deceived by a young man acting poorly as an attorney and his supposedly "mentor" who is the one ruling the trial.

— Excuse me!? — Phoenix shouted, pointing furiously at Madarame. — You're the one who refused to testify under the oath. The only criminal here is you!

— And that's why I'm here to testify. I will not be pinned as a criminal as this court made the wrongdoing of letting this person walk free for his crimes. Especially like this, with such absurdity, you dare to call it a trial. Faked evidence? I doubt the veracity of this supposed evidence brought by this detective.

— How absurd… — Yusuke said, listening to Madarame's claim.

— Mr. Madarame, you're in no position to say anything. You've refused to testify in court. — The Judge said.

— I know, but I was informed I wasn't involved in this case as a suspect. But now seeing that excuse you call a trial I can't hold myself any longer. I want to testify the truth against the defendant.

— Order! Order! Mr. Madarame, as much as you want to testify, you had refused the subpoena. This is a serious offense.

— But can I at least testify about what I have found, right? Can you at least do anything about it?

— As much as I want to, you have refused a subpoena. This is a serious offense as I said before, moreover, I do doubt your testimony will change anything. However, it is our duty to ensure a fair trial and examine any aspects and details of this case. So I'll allow you to testify, for now at least. — The Judge said.

— Thank you, your Honor. — Madarame replied.

— As much is absurd, I do believe that is something we can't simply ignore, wouldn't you agree, Mr. Amamiya? — Sae said with a sly smile.

Ren nodded his head in affirmation and looked at his mentor.

— Well, Chief Nick?

— I do agree with the prosecution as well, although I do admit I would rather dismiss the witness due to his refusal to testify than admit his testimony to the records of this court. — Phoenix admitted.

— Very well. Mr. Madarame, please testify to this court about your findings. — The Judge ordered.

— Very well, your Honor. — Madarame held his chin thoughtful and started his testimony. — On the day I found out about my pupil scheme, I came back from the exhibit of my works. When I came back, I saw them next to the deposit, which is off-limits. Then, somehow they managed to unlock the door and get in. At this moment I knew my pupil had ulterior motives, so I called the police. After calling the police both ran away. If they have nothing to hide, why did they run away in the first place? After that, I searched his room. Inside his wardrobe, I have found the "Sayuri".

— So, you claim you have found the "Sayuri" inside Mr. Kitagawa's room, is that correct?

— Yes. I do.

— And why do you think it was who stole it?

— He was one of the few pupils I had who lived his entire life with me, so it's only plausible to consider it was him who stole it.

— I see… Mr. Amamiya, do you want to proceed with your cross-examination?

— No. — Ren said.

— No? — Sae asked.

— Why not? Are you perhaps afraid? — Madarame asked.

— No, I'm not afraid. I don't need to proceed, because there is no need for such a thing. — Ren said calmly as ever. — I just want to ask one simple question for the witness.

— Yes, go ahead kid.

— You have made a lot of claims, and one of them in particular called my attention. You said Mr. Kitagawa and Ms. Takamaki went into the storeroom, correct?

— Yes, what about it?

— Well, if that's true, that makes me wonder why you have called the police when they went into the storage room?

— What, the motive is obvious! It's a place off-limits, and—

— Objection! — Sae shouted. — I'm sorry, Mr. Madarame but even I can't see a good reason for you to call the police in that situation.

— What?!

— It's quite obvious you're hiding something. You stated yourself. "At this moment I knew my pupil had ulterior motives, so I called the police." Why do you call the police in the first place, if you have nothing to hide there?

— What?! Which side are you on? — Madarame asked.

Sae stood quiet and looked at her bench.

— Mr. Madarame, even the prosecution has her doubts about your claim. And the prosecution is not the only one who has doubts. — Phoenix said.

— What do you mean by that? That storage room has nothing to do with this trial! — Madarame said, irritated.

— I doubt that. Why do you need to threaten them to a point to even call the police if you have nothing to hide? Besides, I thought you'd claimed you called the police because you have found the "Sayuri". It was your claim. — Ren said.

— Yes, I did, but…

— But what? Are you claiming now you have lied?

— Y-You…!

— Mr. Madarame, the defense has a point. Did you lie to this court, or not?

— You better give a proper answer, because lying under oath is a serious offense, not only that, giving false charges is also a serious offense. If you have something to say, you better say it now.

Madarame was sweating nervously, being stared at by everyone.

— I… I…

— Sensei… — Yusuke muttered.

"Yusuke, I know how you feel, but you're not alone…" Ren said mentally giving an assurance glance to his crestfallen friend, who only nodded his head and glanced at Madarame with severity.

— I do admit. I called the police when I saw them in the storage room with the defendant and that girl.

— So, you do admit.

— However, I do have a reason for that. It was for a good reason that I have done such a thing.

— Or, is that so? We want to hear your reason. — Phoenix said, defying the man on the witness stand.

— It is rather simple. I locked the place simply because I do have no use for it. Not only that, that room was empty for the time being, until that day. On that day, I found the place was being used to stock copies of "Sayuri". All of them by the defendant Mr. Kitagawa!

The public commented about that and the Judge silenced every one by pounding his gavel.

—Order, I will have order! Mr. Madarame, are you sure about that?

— Yes, I am sure of it, your Honor. Not only that, there were several copies of "Sayuri". — Madarame said.

— If that's your claim, then testify about it. — Phoenix and Ren said.

— Of course. — Madarame crossed his arms and glanced at the ground. — The storage room was an empty space with no specific use. The only thing inside there was a few blank canvases. Since I had no use, I simply locked the place and kept it the way it is. Not only that, I'm the only one who has the key, it's impossible for someone to get in. That is until someone managed to force the lock open. The truth behind it is quite obvious. It was the defendant who did it. He managed to force the lock somehow and get in. Then I saw my pupil's true nature. That's all.

— I see…

— Ren, I don't think that changes anything, but I can see Sae… — Phoenix said, seeing Sae's behavior.

— Are you sure you're telling the truth, correct? — Sae asked with an inquisitorial glance.

— I can assure you I'm only telling the truth. And besides, who will believe a cat was responsible to force a lock open? That's absurd, wouldn't you agree? — Madarame said, chuckling and part of the public laughed with him.

— I see… If that's the case, then the prosecution's claim stands. It was Mr. Kitagawa who forced the lock, eventually, he's the only one who could've copied the "Sayuri". — The platinum-haired prosecutor said, fixing her hair.

— I see… Mr. Amamiya, your cross-examination.

— Yes, your Honor. — Ren said.

— Ren…

— Every single testimony has a flaw. Even when it's well built, just a single wind blow is enough to make it fall apart.

— Like a house of cards. Do you have a plan on your mind? — Phoenix asked.

— As a matter of fact, yes I do. Actually, I didn't tell you, right? About my special power.

— Do you have a unique power? — Phoenix asked genuinely curious.

— Yes I do. I do have a special vision.

— What? Do you mean, like Apollo and Trucy?

— Actually, it's different from theirs. I can see people's true selves. Their Shadows.

— People true selves, huh… — Phoenix said thoughtfully. — You're practically like my Magatama.

— But way better. Now, let's make his Shadow speak.

— That sounds like a plan.

Ren closed his eyes and started to focus. When he opened again, the surroundings changed, becoming wavy and distorted. Madarame changed, being replaced by his Shadow. Shadow Madarame smiled at Ren's presence.

So, you decided to talk with me, huh. I'd hope you are prepared to face the fact I will rise up and win against you, lowest beings.

Instead of feeling intimidated, Ren only keeps his cold gaze towards Madarame.

—Tch. He's even annoying as his Shadow. Stubborn and gaudy. — Ren commented on seeing Madarame's Shadow.

— Well, I do wish I could see that. — Phoenix said, tapping his chin and he touched Ren's shoulder. — I guess we should—

Then, to Ren and Phoenix's surprise, they felt an intense headache and to both lawyers' shock, Phoenix could see Shadow Madarame. The man on the witness stand smiled at Phoenix, who was stunned to see Madarame's true form.

— What the—

— Are you two alright? I do hope you're not feeling ill like last time. — Sae asked both defense attorneys.

— No, we're okay. — Both Phoenix and Ren replied, as the young lawyer deactivated his power.

— I see…

— Ren… — Phoenix whispered looking at his apprentice.

— I don't know either. — The frizzy-haired teenager admitted, thinking about it. — You just touched my shoulder and…

— Hmm… I do believe you can extend your powers to someone else. Like me. — Phoenix said thoughtfully, remembering something.

— If the defense is done discussing, I want you to proceed with your cross-examination.

— Yes, your Honor. — Phoenix said. — Ren…

Ren gave a wide smirk.

— I know that's not the best moment to keep our talk, but if that's the case, then I do believe we can make him talk.

Phoenix smiled.

— What are we waiting for?

— Your Honor, I will proceed with the cross-examination. — Ren said. — Witness, please repeat your testimony.

— Very well. The storage room was an empty space that had no specific use. The only thing inside there was a few blank canvases. — Madarame said, summarizing his testimony.

— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — That's an empty space with only some blank canvas?

— Yes, it is. — Madarame said. Ren activated his Vision of Truth. Phoenix touched his shoulder, allowing him to see Madarame's Shadow too.

— So, you don't use that space for anything, correct? — Phoenix asked.

Aside from keeping my "Sayuri" safe, no I don't have another use for it. — Shadow Madarame replied as the real Madarame thought about how to reply to that question. — No. Only to keep the blank canvas inside and some old works. Only that.

— That's odd, Ren.

— What's odd? His statement? — Ren asked.

— Actually, I meant this situation. It's odd to face him in this way right now. It's weird, like facing myself, but…

— I see…

— Do you see anything useful in this statement?

— Not much. Only admit there are several "Sayuri"s there is one thing, but related to him…

— True… Let's continue to listen to his testimony.

— May I continue? — Both Madarame and his Shadow asked. — Since I had no use, I simply locked the place and kept it the way it is. Not only that, I'm the only one who has the key, it's impossible for someone to get in. That is until someone managed to force the lock open.

— Hold it! — Ren shouted again. — So, you're the one who has the key to that room, correct?

— Yes, that is.

— If that's the case, how come several copies of "Sayuri" were found by my client and Ms. Takamaki? — Ren asked.

— Well, perhaps it was my pupil who used the room, managed to force the lock open. Even I have no difficulty seeing that. — Madarame replied calmly.

— But there are no signs of that lock being forced before, and no tools were found in the crime scene or the entire atelier. — Phoenix said.

— And, even you will notice if the lock were forced open several times. — Ren noted.

— Are you claiming I'm a liar!? You—

— Objection! — Ren shouted. — Witness, you raised a possibility, but without proof, it is only a supposition, and nothing more. Ms. Niijima?

— Nothing of this nature was found, and trust us when we mean that. Nothing was found in the entire atelier. — Sae replied.

— Why you! I'm telling the truth, and that is how you retribute the favor? As I thought, lawyers are all the same.

— Don't change the subject, witness.

— ! What are…

— You're not doing a favor, you're doing only your duty as a witness, so you better not think you're wasting your time here because you have to testify here, whether you like it or not. — Sae said with a stern gaze. Phoenix smiled at Ren.

— She's tough. — Ren said.

— Never underestimate Sae Niijima. — Phoenix said.

You bitch! Who do you think you're talking to?!

— Witness! — Phoenix said, pounding the bench, surprising everyone.

— Yes, what is it? — Madarame asked, slightly startled as well.

— Chief Nick. Take it easy. You can't see his Shadow now. Especially everyone. — Ren whispered to Phoenix, who noted he couldn't see Shadow Madarame anymore. Ren touched Phoenix's back discreetly, allowing the veteran defense attorney to see Shadow Madarame again.

— Mr. Madarame, are you stating you were here doing a favor? Then, why do you bother yourself to testify in the first place, especially with all this evidence against you?

The public commented about that and Sae smiled.

— Order! Order!

— Your Honor, I need to remind you this testimony is too far-fetched. The witness is simply saying the same things the defense had already debunked that with Chief Detective Narukami and the prosecution. — Phoenix said.

— Moreover, there is also something that caught my attention. Mr. Madarame? — Sae called.

— Yes?

— You are the only one who got the key for that door, correct? My question is what is so important you were hiding inside there? The defendant and consequently the defense says it was several copies of the "Sayuri", and even you claimed that. However, the "original Sayuri" found in Mr. Kitagawa wardrobe was a mere counterfeit. Are you perhaps hiding the original "Sayuri"?

— What!? — Madarame and his Shadow exclaimed at the same time. — How's she…!?

— Mr. Madarame, the defense has claimed it's impossible for the defendant to hide such a claimed painting for all this time, but the same couldn't be said about you.

— Wait, what!? You're saying… — The Judge said.

— Your Honor, when I was in the prosecution lobby, I revised the case from its start. During my revision, I noticed a particular detail I doubt the defense hasn't noted.

— And what is it? — The Judge asked.

— During that time, Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame had a certain apprentice. That one is claimed by him to be the one who stole the "Sayuri". His name was Mahiyo Asayame.

— And what's wrong with him?

— The person claimed to be the thief who stole the "Sayuri" committed suicide several years ago. Not only that, the dates given by Mr. Madarame don't match up with these events, indicating he was lying from the very beginning.

— She hit that point really well… — Phoenix commented. — Which makes me wonder what she's planning.

— Order! Order! — The Judge said, pounding his gavel. — Ms. Niijima…

— Your Honor, the answer for that is rather simple. Mr. Madarame, you're claiming your "Sayuri" has been stolen from you by one of your ex-apprentices for years. But there was no evidence of this whatsoever, neither did you fill a charge against that supposed thief. So, how is that possible? Unless you had the "Sayuri", the entire time, hidden in that old storage room nonetheless.

— Do you have proof? Do you have some proof for your bold claim? — Madarame and his Shadow asked.

— Your own testimony is all the proof I need. Making a quote of your own words "The storage room was an empty space which had no specific use. Since I had no use, I simply locked the place and kept it the way it is. Not only that, I'm the only one who has the key, so it's impossible for someone to get in." That's your own words against you. Moreover, even Mr. Kitagawa testified he and Ms. Takamaki have seen several copies of "Sayuri". So, how do you explain that? — Sae asked.

— Well… I…

— You better tell us the truth, before I indict you for contempt of the court. — The long platinum-haired prosecutor said, pointing at Madarame.

— Well… I…

Then Madarame laughed to everyone's surprise.

— What is so funny? — Phoenix asked.

— The "Sayuri"? Inside that old empty room? Don't make me laugh! If anything was there, the police may have found it, right? — Madarame said with a huge grin.

— He's confident… And I know why…

— Ren? — Phoenix asked.

— The SIU is involved, and that deposit room is off-limits, in other words… — Ren said.

— I see… But what about Narukami's search?

— Depending on if the SIU will intervene…

— Dammit!

— Dammit! Are you saying…?!

— Yes, as long as that area is off-limits, there is no way I can be found guilty, it's my word against this "evidence".

— Tch!

— Ren, there is no other way to take him down? — Phoenix asked.

Now, there is no way you can be found guilty, so why don't you shut up and accept my genialness?

— That… Wait, genialness, huh…

— Ren…?

— Well, if that's the case, I do believe that ends the cross-examination of—

— Hold it! — Ren shouted, interrupting the Judge. — Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame, so someone so sure of yourself, you're clearly lacking information.

— What?

— Chief Nick, there's a contradiction in his statement, have you noticed?

— Me? Well…

Then Phoenix realized. He shook his head negatively and glanced at Madarame with a defiant smile.

— Mr. Madarame, for someone it's called a genius, you may be lacking when it comes to the matter of basic logic.

— What!?

— Mr. Madarame, I do believe you are the only one who could enter that room; however, three persons did enter that day. Mr. Kitagawa, Ms. Takamaki, and you, of course. You stated the place was empty for the time being, however that contradicts the state of the room for the time being.

— Wait a moment, how could you say that? As I said before, it was my pupil who—

— Objection! Sorry, that doesn't fly here.

— What?

— Mr. Madarame, several copies of "Sayuri" were found by Mr. Kitagawa and Ms. Takamaki. Even you as well, but you didn't seem surprised like you already knew it. For someone who claims to not know it, you sound awfully calm. So tell me, you knew there were several copies of "Sayuri" in the storeroom, didn't you!?

The public started to chatter about it and the Judge hit his gavel, silencing everyone.

— Order! Order! Order! Mr. Wright!? Are you and Mr. Amamiya claiming!?

— Your Honor, please remember his testimony. He said he is the only one who has the key with him. And there is no proof Mr. Kitagawa had forced the lock. That itself it's a huge contradiction.

— That is true. There's no way Mr. Kitagawa could enter.

— And what if Mr. Kitagawa had stolen the key. That's a plausible explanation. — Madarame said.

Sae shook her head negatively and glanced at Madarame.

— Unfortunately for you, you could have noticed the missing key, and even have called the police to look it over. Especially if that room were used, as you claimed. You could have noticed something was wrong from the very beginning! — Sae said.

— Order! Hmm… Both sides have a point. Witness, you have lied to this court, this itself is a serious offense. — The Judge said.

— What!? — Madarame said.

— However, I'm willing to let this slide, if you testify truthfully.

— Y-Yes, your Honor.

— Mr. Amamiya, what should the witness testify next?

— There's something that caught my attention. According to your testimony, you said you saw your pupil's "true nature", and he's the one who did it.

— Yes, I do believe so.

— Care to explain to us more about it.

— You meant you want to know more about my apprentice, huh? Very well, I will do that.

— Please Mr. Madarame, testify about your apprentice. — The Judge ordered.

Madarame posed in his habitual stance and started his testimony.

— Yusuke is a brilliant child. Always been talented. However, what I never expected is for him to do forgeries and plagiarism. He did some shady works over his life, and all his art pieces were lacking some… bright. He always acted like that, and he had an ulterior motive.

— Well, that's an interesting testimony.

— Hold it for a moment!

To Ren's surprise it was Yusuke who shouted.

— Sensei… Why…? Why are you doing this…? — The young artist asked.

— You know you can't escape from justice Yusuke. You need to face the real truth of reality.

— Defendant, please don't do your sudden outbursts. — The Judge said, looking at Yusuke. — Mr. Amamiya, your cross-examination, if you please.

— Right. Mr. Madarame, please repeat your testimony.

— As I said Yusuke is a brilliant child. Always been talented. However, what I never expected is for him to do forgeries and plagiarism.

— Hold it! — Ren shouted. — You claimed he's an incredible artist, but you're saying he does forgery and plagiarism? — Ren asked.

— Yes I do. Or should I say I'm the one who did it, after all, it wasn't like he didn't aid me in the first place. Fufufu.

— That… — Ren said flattery, keeping his anger under control.

— Ren. Relax. It's not worth it. — Phoenix said.

Ren sighed.

— I know… but it's still infuriating. — Ren said. — Why plagiarism? — Ren asked.

— Well, it is because he lacks creativity. He's doted on his skills but lacks imagination.

Ren saw Yusuke bending down and glanced at him, giving a quick look before glancing back at Madarame.

— Mr. Madarame, are you implying my client is not subjectively graced with art? If yes, why had he asked Ms. Takamaki to pose in the first place?

— He's a teenager, perhaps—

— Objection! — Ren interrupted Madarame. — You better hold onto your tongue before saying some atrocity. Or else—

— Objection! — Sae shouted. — Mr. Amamiya, don't threaten the witness. And Mr. Madarame, you should behave yourself. — She warned.

— The prosecution's objection is sustained. Mr. Amamiya, please refrain from threatening and badgering the witness. — The Judge said, pounding his gavel.

— Yes, your Honor. — Ren said.

— Mr. Madarame, please behave yourself. — The Judge said.

— Yes, your Honor. As I said, perhaps he wanted an accomplice to join him in his scheme. As if that little girl is an example of smartness. Too beautiful, too dumb.

— Ren… — Phoenix called, seeing Ren's eyebrows trembling slightly in anger.

— I know. I know. — Ren said. — Please continue your testimony.

— He did some shady works over his life, and all his art pieces lacked some… bright.

— Hold it! You meant Mr. Kitagawa lacks talent? Why do you accept him as your apprentice in the first place if that's the case? — Ren asked.

— What type of question is that? Are you questioning Madarame's choice of his apprentice? — Sae asked, slightly irritated.

— If that's the case, why take him as his apprentice in the first place? Who does he bother to take someone with a lack of creativity? — Phoenix questioned.

— Do you know that line of questioning is irrelevant, right? — Sae pointed.

— Come on, I majored in art at the same time I took my law degree. Without creativity and skill, you can't be an artist, no matter what you do.

— Don't make things more confusing. Your art degree has nothing to do with this.

— Well, as someone who has an art degree, I can give at least my earnest opinion and criticism about it.

"How does a simple argument between those two become something like this?" Ren asked himself, sweating nervously.

— Stop you two! This is getting ridiculous. — The Judge said, pounding his gavel once. — Mr. Amamiya, why do you ask such a question?

— I asked that because a pupil who can't develop his own works is irrelevant in the art world. For someone who had a lot of apprentices, he had to at least have some criteria to choose his pupils. — Ren explained.

— That makes a valid point. Mr. Madarame?

Damn brat! You will not let me get away that easily, huh?! — Shadow Madarame said as the real Madarame stood quiet, his lips trembling slightly in anger.

— Mr. Madarame? — The Judge called.

— Sorry, your Honor. I will answer the defense question. At first, I thought he truly had the potential to develop as an artist. And I was right since I took his fabulous works as my own.

— But what happened? — Ren asked.

— But he didn't develop as I expected. His works looked bland, without the passion which gives people the spark of life into people's hearts.

— He truly spoke as an artist. At least that. I can see how he had deceived people. — Phoenix commented.

— I see.

— But his skills to mimic anyone's works are truly terrifying. You can barely say the difference by eye. At this point, I knew I'd created someone truly talented. Talented, and loyal to me. A servant who is willing to spend and use his life and talent for my behavior and will. Until he decided to rebel against me. Now he will fall and suffer, as well you.

— Ren, ignore. — Phoenix said, starting to feel furious as well.

— I know…

— So, you're claiming he had a criminal behavior since his youth, correct? — Sae asked.

— I'm afraid it seems like it.

— Your Honor, the prosecution stands with the plea of guilty to Mr. Kitagawa. The prosecution is willing to accept the involvement of Mr. Kitagawa in this case as the culprit of plagiarism and forgery. Even with the ambiguity of the evidence, there is room to believe the gullibility of the defendant.

The public commented about Sae's claim, catching both Phoenix and Ren by surprise. The Judge hit his gavel, silencing everyone.

— Ms. Niijima, I do understand the SIU has a reputation to uphold, but…

— There is nothing to do with SIU's reputation. — Sae replied dryly.

— What?

— The prosecution had enough of this game from the defense and especially from the witness. The prosecution points out the witness as an accomplice of the defendant!

— Order! Order! — The Judge yelled, trying to keep the court order. — Ms. Niijima, what are you…

— The answer for that is rather simple, your Honor. The witness had handled the evidence in retrospect of knowing all of this situation. Moreover, there is enough proof from both defense and prosecution to point to the knowledge of the witness about this matter, meaning he aided the defendant in this matter. If the witness admits, the prosecution will take the witness out of the responsibility for the plagiarism and forgery on the defendant's part. — Sae said.

Ren started to sweat nervously.

— Chief Nick… I wasn't expecting that from her…! — Ren said gritting his teeth.

— I know! She's must be desperate—

— I'm not desperate, if that what you're thinking Mr. Wright.

—!

— I'm just tired of this wasting of time with you all. I was treated and fooled by the Chief Detective, and I'll now be fooled again. Ichiryusai Madarame, it's your choice.

Madarame thought for a moment before posing with his arms crossed.

— I do admit that I did know about the scheme. But I have never aided my apprentice. At least not consciously.

— So, you do admit you aided him.

— Yes, against my will and knowledge, but yes I aided. Is that enough for you?

The public commented on Madarame's confession and Ren looked afraid at Phoenix.

— Chief Nick…!

— Ren. Things are looking bad for us now. — Phoenix said, sweating nervously.

— That was a low move from her.

— I'm afraid I didn't see that move coming from her.

— I know you respect her, but that…

— Mr. Amamiya, the witness confessed to a serious crime that compromised your client. With that, I don't see any reason to prolong this trial. Do you have any objections?

"Dammit, is that how this trial is going to end?" Ren thought, looking at Shadow Madarame, who was smiling at him.

I told you, you will fall down, as my foolish pupil. You shall pay now for defying me.

— You…!

Shadow Madarame laughed.

You should already know, there is no way to win against me, after all, how can you prove I'm the culprit? I'm not involved after all.

That comment called Ren's attention, making him think about it.

— Ren… If we don't do anything.

— I know. But the point now is not to prove Yusuke is the culprit. But Madarame.

Phoenix gave a defiant smile and looked at Ren.

— So, what are you waiting for? — Phoenix asked.

— Mr. Amamiya, I want to know—

— Your Honor! I do have an objection! I do object to the witness confession!

— Objection! — Sae pounded her bench furious. — Mr. Amamiya, what is the meaning of this?!

— Ichiryusai Madarame confessed he was an accomplice of plagiarism and forgery. If that is the case, I demand him to testify about it. Otherwise—

— Objection! Otherwise what? The witness has already confessed he's an accomplice of Mr. Kitagawa. He's the only one who could know about it. And the evidence points to him!

— Objection! If that is the case, the evidence also points to another person. A person who is involved in that case of plagiarism and forgery. Someone who has fooled everyone for years.

— Objection! Is that so? Then say it. Say who is the person behind it. But you better point to someone who is in the realm of possibility, or you will suffer the consequences. — Sae said furiously.

Ren pounded his bench and nodded his head in affirmation.

— Very well. I will present a possible suspect. And I don't need to go too far to bring up that person.

— Interesting. Mr. Amamiya, who is the other suspect? — The Judge asked.

— The defense indicts Ichiryusai Madarame for plagiarism and forgery! — Ren said, pointing at Madarame.

— What!? That's a huge absurdity! Why am I—

— Objection! — Ren shouted, interrupting Madarame. — I'm afraid you don't understand, Mr. Madarame.

— What?!

— It's rather simple, actually. The same scenario you have built, and the evidence, all of that can point to Mr. Kitagawa, but that also applies to you. Not only that but your testimony also supports, even the lack of it.

— What do you mean by that!? — Madarame questioned furiously.

— Mr. Madarame, you stated you don't want to testify at first because you don't want to incriminate yourself. But you not only changed your mind but you also testified about this "scheme". You went so far, saying "He always acted like that, and he had an ulterior motive." If that is true, how could you let something like that happen? — Phoenix asked, pointing at Madarame. — In this case, there are two scenarios. The first one, you were Mr. Kitagawa's accomplice, aiding him in that scheme.

— The second one, is you being the mastermind behind this scheme. The one responsible for the plagiarism and the forgery is you! I hereby accuse you, Ichiryusai Madarame! — Ren said, pointing towards Madarame.

The audience went down, arguing about the accusation Ren made. The Judge hit his gavel, trying to restore the order.

— Order! Order! Order! That's—

— Objection! — Sae shouted. — Is the defense insane!? Ichiryusai Madarame is the one responsible for the plagiarism and forgery!? What standards do you have to support your claim!?

— Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame is a famous artist known for his unusual talent and several art styles. However, how can someone be able to do such a feat? Or he's truly a genius, or he does have another way. — Ren pointed.

— Objection! What madness are you claiming!? Madarame has to be a genius. His artworks are claimed in Japan and over the world. — The Judge said.

— True, I do admit that. However, I need to remind you your Honor, Madarame had fame to uphold, so his works had to be top-notch. So how does he do it? I asked myself the same question and I do have the answer for that.

— Is that so? Well Mr. Amamiya, tell this court the answer. — Sae said.

— As you wish, Ms. Niijima. Mr. Madarame had several apprentices over the years. At the same time, he had several works in many art styles. So, why were none of his apprentices known? — Ren questioned.

— Objection! Aren't you saying…

— But, I do, Ms. Niijima. Madarame plagiarized his own apprentices over the years, claiming their works as his own.

— Objection! That's impossible! If that is the case Madarame will be found in the blink of an eye. — Sae explained pounding her bench in anger.

— True, under normal circumstances. But Madarame isn't just an average artist. He's a famous artist, the most famous artist from Japan, so he does have influence in the art world. His word is more valuable than the word of anyone else, including his own pupils. His influence was his insurance to do whenever he pleases!

Sae flinched and started to sweat nervously, looking at both Ren and Madarame.

— T-Then, you're saying…!

— Yes! Madarame took several apprentices under his wing to abuse them, and especially steal their works! That's right! He took Yusuke Kitagawa under his wing to use him as his source of income!

— Order! Order! — The Judge yelled, trying to calm down the audience. — Then, his house…

— Yes, your Honor. He used his house as a way to keep his apprentices under captivity. It's rather simple, giving them the necessary well-being in exchange for their artworks. And when they're not usable anymore, throw them away as if they're nothing!

The audience became turbulent, not believing in Ren's scandalous claims.

— Order! Order! Order! The courtroom will have order! Everyone will calm down or I'll arrest everyone in the audience for contempt of court! Mr. Amamiya…

— Amamiya! — Madarame yelled furiously, losing his composure. — You dare to defame me!? Do you have anything that supports your vain and ridiculous thesis!?

— Yes, in fact, I do. — Ren replied. Madarame laughed.

— I'm sure you're bluffing. I've heard your mentor is the king of bluffing. It was as they say: like master, like apprentice.

Ren shook his head, waving his index finger in negative.

— Wrong, Mr. Madarame. I do have something or someone in that case. Someone who can prove my point.

— Is that so? Then who? Perhaps Kitagawa-san can testify more about it? Or even that girl?

— Chief Nick, have you called that person, already? — Ren asked, ignoring Madarame.

— Not yet. Want me to call that person now?

— Of course. — Ren turned his head towards the Judge. — Your Honor, the defense wants to summon someone. A person who can answer that.

— Objection! — Sae shouted. — The prosecution objects to the defense's request. Mr. Amamiya, do you really believe a new witness will change anything? And besides, we're almost at the end of the proceedings.

— I do agree with Ms. Niijima. — The Judge said, nodding his head. — Mr. Amamiya.

— Your Honor, we still have time to keep the proceedings. Moreover, I do believe calling this witness will change everything, although I wasn't expecting to call her in the first place.

— Her? — Sae asked

— Your Honor, I do want to summon a special witness to this case. All I need is a thirty-minute recess. That's all I need.

The Judge went silent, thinking about it. Sae was silent as well.

— Your Honor, you wouldn't let that petty boy… — Madarame said and he was silent by the sound of the Judge's gavel.

— Mr. Amamiya, I will grant you only one chance. Only one.

— Thank you, your Honor.

— Your Honor, thirty minutes is too much. — Sae said. — I request you, your Honor, to grant only a ten-minute recess.

— You have a point Ms. Niijima. I do hope your witness will turn the tables in your favor, otherwise, your efforts will be for nothing. The court will have a final recess of ten minutes. — The Judge said hitting his gavel.

Tokyo District Court. Defendant Lobby No. 5

15:20

— She will arrive in time? — Ren asked.

— Well, all we can do is wait. — Phoenix said. The veteran attorney sighed tiredly. — Dammit Sae, ten minutes?! With this traffic, it's almost impossible for her to arrive in time.

— I know, but all we can do is wait, as you said.

— So, plan B, huh? — Yusuke asked.

— Yes. Plan B. I was waiting for Narukami, but knowing our luck, he'll appear at the last minute. — Ren said, sweating nervously.

— True. Why are things so complicated for us? — Phoenix asked.

— Because if it wasn't, victory would be worthless and vain.

— Chief Miles! — Ren said, seeing Miles go into the defendant's lobby. — Let me guess, you brought our witness.

— Yes, I did. You were lucky in some way. She was coming from Madarame's exhibit. — The Chief Prosecutor said with a confident smirk.

— Yeah, I know. But I can't rely on luck all the time. One hour our luck will run out. — Ren said, slightly annoyed.

— True. But you're a gambler, so you're pressing your luck all the time.

— Yeah, I know. But I do plan in advance to avoid such a thing. Losing just because he had a stroke of bad luck is amateurism.

— Ren… I hate when you have a point. — Phoenix said bowing in defeat.

— I know. But I can't avoid betting high. The adrenaline is addicting.

Phoenix and Miles laughed.

— Yes, we know. — Both Phoenix and Miles said.

— And besides, it is good to take some risks sometimes. It can be very recompensating. — Ren said. — Well, if she's here, maybe we can overturn the tables and take Madarame down.

— Speaking of him, he was furious. You better prepare yourselves for the lawsuits.

Ren sighed in annoyance.

— Do these people never learn their lesson? — Ren asked with a sly smile.

— It seems they don't. — Miles replied with a sharp smile.

— And how's Sae? — Phoenix asked worriedly.

— Visibly irritated and frustrated, although she doesn't show it. Worried about her, Wright?

— Miles… This is a serious matter.

— Sorry.

— And besides, I always worry about you and the prosecutors I fought with. We're human beings, our well-being is more important.

— Wow, Phoenix Wright does worry about their rivals, huh? — Miles teased.

— Well, excuuuuse me, Your Highness, if I at least consider you as my friend. Perhaps I should demand the favors you owe me over the years. — Phoenix rebutted.

— NNNHHHOOOOGGGGHHHH! Wright! — Miles hissed.

Ren laughed.

— If you two are done, we should focus on the real matter here.

Phoenix and Miles nodded, glancing seriously at each other.

— The SIU is interfering in this case in some way. And not only that, Madarame is confident they will not access that storage room. — Ren said seriously.

— Not only that, I noticed the SIU Director has some particular interest in this case. Perhaps it's because someone famous as Madarame is involved, and it seems it's not only that. — Miles said.

— Madarame… He does have a Palace… — Yusuke whispered.

— First Kamoshida, now Madarame. I see some patterns here, but how are they involved? — The Chief Prosecutor of Los Angeles asked.

— I can't see a clear connection. At least aside from both being some terrible people who abuse younger people. — Phoenix admitted. — But I sense there's something behind the curtain as always. It always has.

— I hate when you two were right too, you know? — Ren said, sighing in defeat. He checked the time on his phone. — Time to reconvene in court. Let's see how things will go.

Tokyo District Court. Courtroom Nº8

15:30

— The Court will reconvene. — The Judge announced. — Mr. Amamiya, you may call your witness.

— Very well. — Ren nodded his head in affirmation. — Ms. Misham, please take the stand.

A slender girl with long dark-blue hair wearing a long-sleeved pink strapped shirt, and dungarees stood on the witness stand and looked at everyone. She smiled at Phoenix and Ren gave a gentle look.

— Witness, please state your name and occupation to register the court.

— My name is Vera Misham. I'm an artist and also an art analyst, in a manner of speaking.

— An artist. Your witness, Mr. Amamiya, is another artist?! Is that a practical joke!? — Madarame said laughing. However, Sae was sweating nervously, seeing the young woman on the witness stand.

— Mr. Amamiya… The witness just now… — Sae said, her face blanched.

— Yes. She is the same person. I do ask specifically for her services. — Ren replied.

— Mr. Amamiya, do you know the person on the witness stand? — The Judge asked.

— Only by the casefiles, your Honor. Ms. Misham, if you can explain?

— Of course. Your Honor, before I can testify, I need to explain something about myself. Before I became an artist, I worked in the art world making replicas, at least that is what my deceased father made me believe so.

— What?

— She made forgeries in the past. Several forgeries, your Honor. — Sae explained.

— Ms. Niijima…?

— She was indirectly responsible for the disbarment of Phoenix Wright. She is the forger who made the fateful evidence in the Zak Gramarye's case. — Sae stated.

The public went into a tense state, commenting about the person on the witness stand.

— Is that true!? — The Judge asked.

— Yes, that is true, your Honor. I made for most of my life forgeries. Forgeries that people cannot differ from the originals. — Vera explained. — And that's why Mr. Amamiya has called me.

— You've called her. Why!? — Sae exclaimed.

— Vera is one of the most famous young artists of United States, and one of the most experienced art experts known. When I heard about the rumors…

— You called a specialist…

— I see. — The Judge said.

— This is absurd!

— Mr. Madarame? — The Judge asked surprised, seeing Madarame's sudden outburst.

— Did you call a forger to the witness stand!? How do you expect someone without any talent for art to testify!? — Madarame vociferously.

— She's an expert with artworks, not only that, she's one of the most requested persons from collectors and even museums. She was an obvious choice for me to call in such a situation. — Ren replied calmly as ever.

Your ignorant runt! Do you think a mere forger can analyze a piece of art?!

— Mr. Amamiya. Are you entirely sure of your decision? That is a risky move on your part. — Sae warned, ignoring Madarame.

— I know, but it's a calculated risk. I'm betting high here, and I'm sure my hand favors me. — Ren replied.

— Very well. The prosecution doesn't have objections.

— But I do have! You can't simply expect from a forger—

— Mr. Madarame, enough. — The Judge said. — I will not allow you to insult and badger the witness any further.

— What? Do you know what she—

— Yes, everyone does. — Ren said, rudely interrupting Madarame slightly annoyed. — But you don't have the right to insult her for what she has done in the past. Everyone deserves a second chance. Although some people throw this chance away.

— I do agree. Now only that, if you called her, you may have a good reason. — The Judge said.

— Yes. I do have. Ms. Misham, if you please. — Ren said.

— Yes. Your Honor, I want to submit the results of my research and analysis of Ichiryusai Madarame's works. — Vera said.

— Yes, I saw several of his works. It drifts from anything I have seen in my life. So different styles and techniques. Almost as if it wasn't made by one simple person. — The Judge commented.

— Because it wasn't made by him. — Vera said.

— What…?

The public commented on Vera's answer. Madarame laughed, calling everyone's attention.

— Your Honor, you will truly believe a forger like her can be able to analyze the complexity of my works? How can she be able to do that if my works are currently exposed at the museum?

— Before you comment on anything, we should let Ms. Misham testify first. — The Judge said calmly as ever. — Ms. Misham, please continue.

— Thank you. — Vera said. — As I was saying, I analyzed Ichiryusai Madarame's artworks. To make such a feat I analyzed some of the works in the exhibit. Not only that, I went after people who had the originals of Madarame. With a thorough examination, I noticed the patterns of the work, drifting so much from each piece, I could identify it was another person who made them. I compared the signatures left on the canvas, and the pressure, trace, style, and even the pattern don't match. Even in the cases of work with similar styles, I could identify inconsistencies. Moreover, there are some hidden signatures, indicating the real artist's signature. One of these works has particularly caught my attention. One of the works on the exhibit matches Mr. Kitagawa's style, pattern, and technique, so I can say without any doubt it was him who made it.

Madarame blanched and the audience went into an uproar.

— Order! Order! Order!

— Your Honor, please you will listen to a commoner who doesn't have—

— Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame, please be quiet. — The Judge ordered. — Ms. Misham, continue if you please.

— I also analyzed the "Sayuri". It is without doubt a counterfeit. A very detailed one, with high quality, compared to high-quality images existent of that work, but still quality and detailed counterfeit nonetheless. I can tell without any doubt it wasn't Mr. Kitagawa who made it. He's far more delicate and precise to make that counterfeit with such precise, and style, to copy it. All I can say is it is not his doing.

— You can't say it was Mr. Madarame who did it?

— Unfortunately, I can't say with the proper precision. All I can say is the art pieces he submitted are definitely not made by him.

— Are you absolutely sure about that? — Sae asked.

— Absolutely.

The public goes down, commenting about that feverously, as the Judge pounding his gavel tries to restore the order of the court.

— Order! The court will have order! Ms. Misham, your testimony will be vital, since you're not only a famous artist but also a specialist in artworks. However, I do have room for some doubt. Only the work and the testimony of one specialist unfortunately isn't enough.

— Then what about the work results of the SEES forensics? — Narukami said entering the courtroom, with a document in his hands. — My apologies for coming so late, your Honor, but I finally came back to Madarame atelier.

— And what happened?

— Curiously enough, the SIU interfered in the proceedings, at least indirectly. According to them, they have already checked the area once again, saying the storage room has nothing to do with the case. But thanks to that, I decided to check a few other things. Mr. Madarame, I didn't know you sold several copies of "Sayuri" to people who are interested in your works. I was incredibly shocked to hear that.

Madarame started to sweat nervously with Narukami's sarcastic statement.

— One of these people had their copy hidden in her bedroom. I took it personally and I have to say, I had never seen someone so nervous.

— How do you…

— We actually saw someone getting into your house during our investigation, and we simply went after that person. We checked her entire life and I have to say, she quite possesses the lifestyle, since she lives in a huge mansion. A quick search over her finances indicates she couldn't afford that mansion. However, she received a huge amount to not only buy that mansion but to keep a high-standard lifestyle. All of that is directed to you, Ichiryusai Madarame. — Narukami said with a serious cold tone, keeping his mocking tone aside. The famous artist gave a deadly stare toward the chief detective.

— She's a friend of mine, and I lend her some money to live. Is that a crime?

— For someone so humble who says he can't afford such a life, I think it's difficult and absurd to keep a high-profile lifestyle for someone just for friendship, you know. The only case I can see is if it is the case someone keeps that lifestyle to themself.

— Are you saying my humble life is all nothing more than a mere lie?! — Madarame hissed.

— Hey, I never said you live a high-standard lifestyle. I'm just pointing out something which usually happens. Besides, I wanted to know something.

— What is it!?

— If you claim the storage room has only copies of "Sayuri", why did that woman try to take that specific one? That is if that is not a mere copy.

The public whispered surprised, commenting on it. The Judge pounds his gavel once, silencing everyone.

— Why not? Perhaps one of them is special for me, wouldn't you agree? Besides, why would someone take a mere copy from my house in the first place? I really doubt they'll think that was the original. — Madarame said.

Everyone commented about that and Narukami raised his hand and that was the cue to everyone in the audience to shut up.

— I'm sorry to break your little argument in half, but that copy wasn't in the middle of the others when the police checked it. To make sure, I send it for analysis, and after hearing Ms. Misham over there, I need to say I hardly believe that the painting is one of the copies, since you have the only key to the storage room. So, I will ask once: Why did she go into your house to pick up a mere copy of "Sayuri"? Wait, let me rephrase it: Why was that copy of "Sayuri" in her possession? What is so special about that copy?

— What do you mean by that statement?! The "Sayuri" of Miwaki had nothing to do with this?!

— I never said the name of Miwaki Konobura. How do you know the name of the suspect in the first place?

Madarame was sweating nervously as everyone commented on his last statement and Narukami's revelation. That called Ren's attention who only smiled at the chief detective with a sly smile.

— I…

— Can you explain, Mr. Madarame? Because I do have a supposition about it. Your Honor, if you please allow me. — Ren said.

— Of course. — The Judge said allowing the teenager to proceed.

— We had the assumption that the "Sayuri" had been lost, or in my client's possession. However, I do have another assumption.

— Which is…?

— I do believe the reason is that the supposed "copy" is not a copy, but the real "Sayuri" itself.

— WHAT!? What are you talking about!? — Sae exclaimed.

— Think carefully, Ms. Niijima. Why Mr. Madarame doesn't allow the police to enter his storage room in the first place? And why was he so secret about it? The defense believes Mr. Madarame was lying about the whereabouts of the "Sayuri", especially about the "Sayuri" possession. The defense indicts Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame was the person who was in possession of the "Sayuri" all this time!

The public was talking vigorously about the defense new theory, commenting about how that sounded absurd and made sense at the same time. The Judge pounds his gavel, trying to silence everyone.

— Order! The court will have order!

— Objection! — Sae shout rang through the courtroom. — Mr. Amamiya, can you see the absurdity of your theory!? How's Mr. Madarame have possession of "Sayuri" all the time!? We've already discussed that.

— And as I said it's just a theory, that is until the impossible is discarded and all the possibilities are considered. That's the only possibility remaining, and the only possibility left. And considering the newest information and discoveries, there's room to consider my theory.

— But…

— Ms. Niijima, even you can see that's the only option left. — Phoenix said, as he shook his head. — Your Honor, the defense suggests waiting for the forensics results of SEES. If we have any doubts, everything will be solved as the results come out.

— Hm…

— Your Honor, as much as I wish to solve this, the prosecution suggests postponing this trial to tomorrow. That will solve any doubts we have.

— Hm…

— Your Honor, that will not be necessary.

— Chief Detective Narukami!? — The Judge exclaimed surprised.

— As a member of the Yaso Investigation Team Division of SEES, I can assure you the results will be released shortly since we'd possess the latest equipment in forensics. Since we had the "Sayuri" in our possession since the resume of this trial.

— What!? — Ren, Sae, Phoenix, and Madarame exclaimed.

— You mean…

— Actually, we had it in our possession since you asked to search over the place. We've, your Honor. We had caught Ms. Konobura with the "Sayuri" under her possession since your Honor requested the search over Madarame's place. I've asked to send that painting to analysis at the same moment we got it under our possession.

— So, you have the painting in analysis.

— Yes, but the full results will take a little more time to release, but that will be enough for now since we had enough time to perform at least a full analysis. I just need to make a call for the labs to send me the results in no time.

— Your Honor, the prosecution objects to Mr. Narukami's proposal. Instead, the prosecution suggests postponing the trial to tomorrow.

— Your Honor, it will only take twenty minutes for the results to finally come out.

— Hm… May I say my regards about this matter. As much as I want to postpone the trial, I can't avert my eyes toward this matter. And since I declared the final recess, I think we should revise the case so far. I'm afraid I need to refuse your request, Ms. Niijima.

Sae's teeth gritted as she glanced with anger toward Ren and Narukami.

— Thank you, your Honor. — Both Ren and Narukami said.

— Now then, may you do the favor to recall the case so far, Mr. Amamiya?

— Very well, your Honor. — Ren replied, nodding his head in affirmation. — As we may know, the "Sayuri" has been found inside Mr. Kitagawa's wardrobe. Not only that, there was been found several pieces of evidence against Mr. Kitagawa. However, as it was established in court thanks to Mr. Narukami's intervention, all the evidence has been manipulated by the Forensic Department of Tokyo Police. Moreover, we've discovered the true nature of the evidence itself during this trial as well.

— That's correct. If I recall correctly, the evidence was some art supplies, the "Sayuri" and a counterfeit of the same painting.

— Correct. During the trial, however, it was discovered both "Sayuri" is a mere counterfeit. Not only that, but we also have found the possibility of a third party in this case of plagiarism and forgery. — Sae said bitterly. — The defense has indicated Mr. Ichiryusai Madarame as the person responsible for those schemes.

— That's correct. Also, the witness has testified about the scheme, explaining how that scheme has been working for years.

— However, it was established by the defense that the inconsistency of the witness testimony, not only that we've raised the possibility of Madarame being the responsible for this scheme all along. — Phoenix said. — Moreover, the investigations on the atelier have found another "Sayuri" under the possession of Ms. Konobura.

— And now we're waiting for the results of the analysis of that painting which will be released at any moment. — Narukami said.

— Well, if that's all… — The Judge said.

— I think we did it, but… — Ren said, unsure.

— Yeah, I've noticed too. Sae. She…

Sae was smiling, a confident smile, which was unusual in that situation.

— …She may have realized something. — Phoenix pointed.

— That's why I'm not sure. We're missing something. — Ren said.

— That was quite the show, Mr. Amamiya, but you're forgetting something. — Sae said confidently.

— Which is…?

— The possibility of the "Sayuri" under the SEES possession being a fake. If that copy is a fake, then your entire case doesn't hold water. Moreover, that raises the suspicion toward Mr. Kitagawa.

— True… I do admit there's a fifty percent chance that painting may be a mere counterfeit, however, there's one way to find out. However, there's something off about that, if that's the case.

— Which is…? — Sae asked.

— Ms. Niijima, your case falls apart as well if that painting is a counterfeit. Your whole case is built on the premise Mr. Kitagawa stole the "Sayuri" and made several counterfeits to gain his profit. Not only that, you claimed Mr. Kitagawa had the "Sayuri" under his possession over the years. If that painting is a counterfeit…

— Then… I see…

They heard a ringtone and Narukami took his smartphone and checked his messages.

— The results have been released. — He informed.

— And? — The Judge asked.

— The results are… inconclusive.

— What…? — Ren and Sae asked.

— The painting is the "Sayuri" but the sketch under the painting shows another drawn, of a woman holding a baby.

— Wait, the painting was different from the sketch? — Ren asked.

— It seemed like it.

— And how's that related to our case? — Ren asked.

— That's the problem. Without any doubt, that's "Sayuri", however, the original sketch doesn't resemble the "Sayuri" at all, so we can't confirm without any doubt if that is the original or a mere copy.

Sae and Ren started to sweat nervously as Madarame's face blanched.

— It seemed the results were not accurate.

— Ren… — Phoenix called.

— It's not over. At least not yet. All I need to do it's turn things upside-down. Now I need to think, not why "Sayuri" is the original, or not, but why it is different.

Starting to think, Ren revised the entire case inside his head.

"Okay, first the "Sayuri '' was found in the storage room, which means it was there for a long time. So, why was there… Because Madarame doesn't want that painting to be found. Not only that, the "Sayuri '' was his masterpiece, so why does he keep that hidden for all these years aside from the fact he wanted to make the "Sayuri" more valorous? Perhaps… He wanted to hide something. Thinking about it, it makes sense, since he's keeping everything hidden since he plagiarized his students… But wait, what if he had done it even before? If that is the case, then the "Sayuri '' is another stolen work. However, it's strange that the work is different from the final result. What is making that contradiction? What's wrong with that…? …Wait… If that's stolen work, then why does he need to change it? Change! If I'm right, then…"

"The "Sayuri" was tampered with by Madarame!"

After realizing that, Ren gasped surprised, and looked at his mentor.

— I do have a theory, but when I think about it, it makes total sense.

— Is that so? So what are you waiting for? Go for it! — Phoenix said with a huge smile.

— Mr. Amamiya, if you do have something, you better say it now. I'm ready to postpone the trial.

— I'm sure that will not be necessary, your Honor. — Ren said. — Mr. Madarame, I may have discovered why you are so nervous, now. Your Honor, let me share with the court the defense's theory. — Ren said.

Madarame started to sweat nervously, as he glanced with anger toward the teenager.

— What is it!? Spill it!

— Very well. — Ren replied, ignoring Madarame's rude behavior. — You reacted quite badly when you heard about the results. May I know the reason? The "Sayuri", you've stolen it, haven't you?

—!

— WHAT!? — The Judge exclaimed.

— Mr. Amamiya, what are you…? — Sae asked nervously.

— Madarame made the "Sayuri", but the sketch under the painting shows another thing. The answer is simple. You tampered the original painting.

— What…? — Madarame laughed nervously. — What are you—

— You tampered with the original painting, covering the baby with the fog. Not only that, you claimed the "Sayuri" as yours.

— You brat! Do you really—

— What? Then… The "Sayuri" was being hidden.

— But the question is why?

— Obviously to make it even more valorous. Isn't that enough reason? — The Judge asked.

— No, your Honor. I'm afraid not. Remember, the police and especially the SEES had difficulty retrieving the "Sayuri ''. Why was the storage kept off-limits in the first place? Simply to keep the "Sayuri '' away from them.

— To the forensics not analyze the painting. Then…

— The painting was tampered, to hide the original painting. That itself changed the work's original purpose.

— Then… The original painting…

— It's the sketch under the painting, obviously.

— Then…!

— Yes. And why does someone need to do that? The answer is simple: To create a masterpiece. And who's become famous thanks to "Sayuri"?

Madarame started to look around nervously and laughed.

— Are you insane?! You…

— You knew that's true because you've stolen the "Sayuri" as well. You've been plagiarizing all this time. — Ren interrupted him.

— What…?

— You stole the "Sayuri" and altered it. And you're afraid the forensics will find out.

— What, you…

— That's why you didn't allow the police to look over and to even call someone to take the "Sayuri" out of your atelier because you'll be found out eventually.

— You… You…!

— Ichiryusai Madarame! You're a mere thief, who steals the other's works! You're not an artist. You're a criminal! You're a sham! So, confess… Ichiryusai Madarame! — Ren said, pointing at Madarame.

His cool behavior fell, revealing a wave of restrained anger which was released with a howling yell.

— AMAMIYA! YUSUKE! YOU WILL PAY FOR THIIIIIISSSSS!

The bailiffs care and dragged Madarame out of the courtroom and Sae went after them. Several minutes later Sae came back and took her bench.

— So, Ms. Niijima, what about Mr. Madarame? — The Judge asked.

— He was arrested, but he denied everything. — Sae replied.

— I see… Chief Detective Narukami, what about the "Sayuri".

— Further analysis will be needed, but with our actual results, we can assure that the original one. It was as Mr. Amamiya says. That painting was tampered by Madarame. — Narukami said.

— I see… Mr. Amamiya, great work. You really did a great job. You and your mentor, Phoenix Wright.

— Thank you, your Honor. — Ren replied.

— All in a day's work. — Phoenix replied.

— Now I can handle my verdict. The jury of this court finds the defendant… Not Guilty!

Everyone celebrated as Yusuke looked at them with a gentle smile on his face.

— The court is now adjourned. — The Judge said, pounding his gavel.

May, 26. Thursday 16:10

Tokyo District Court

Defendant Lobby No. 5

— Great work, Ren! And great work as well, Wright! — Miles said with a smile.

— It was nothing. All in a day job. — Ren replied.

— Yeah. We're only doing our job. — Phoenix said.

— Amamiya-san, Mr. Wright. Thank you. — Yusuke said, coming from the corner of the room. — I'm truly grateful for what you two have done for me.

— You're welcome, but as we've said, we're only doing our job. — Ren said.

— Still, I'm grateful for what you've done for me. Please, let me repay you somehow.

— Become a great artist. That's the way you can repay me for everything.

— I see. Thank you…

— Are you alright…? — Ren asked.

— There's one thing bothering me… — Yusuke replied.

— The "Sayuri", right?

— I think I may know who's the one who painted it.

— What…? Then…

— But… But I'm not entirely sure. I think we need to wait for the full results.

— I see…

— Ren!

Ann and Ryuji came from the courtroom and hugged the younger attorney.

— I… need… to… breathe…! — Ren said with difficulty.

— Sorry! — Both Ann and Ryuji said.

— It's okay. So, we've to celebrate, right? — Ren said, looking at them and they understood what Ren meant.

— Yeah, so at the usual place? — Ryuji and Ann asked.

— Yeah. Chief Miles, if you can give us a ride…

— Of course. Although I doubt everyone will fit in my car.

— We'll find a way. — Ren said. — So, what about Madarame?

— He's furious. He paid the bail and it's going to make a press conference about the trial.

Sae came inside the defendant's lobby and Ren looked at her.

— Ms. Niijima. I beg your pardon, but what are you here?

— I'm here to congratulate you on your victory. You deserve it.

— Thank you, I guess… — Ren said, slightly embarrassed.

— Mr. Wright.

— Yes, Prosecutor Niijima? — Phoenix asked.

— It's a pleasure to see you again. I'd hope we can work together again. — Sae said with a smile on her face.

— I see… Me too. I'd hope that drink is still up. — Phoenix said with a smile.

— As much as I wanted to, I'm busy with my case. I'm sorry, but that drink will be postponed to another day.

— I see… Well, good luck with your case. I'd hope you can solve this case as soon as possible.

— Yeah… Me too…

Sae left the place and Phoenix looked at the woman with worry.

— She will be alright. — Ren said.

— Ren…?

— As long you stay at her side, she'll be fine. — Ren said with a gentle smile.

— Thank you. — Phoenix said, smiling back at Ren. — Well, don't mind me. You guys need to celebrate! Miles?

— Okay, okay. I will take them to their destination. I'd hope you all don't destroy the car. It's rented.

— Okay. Morgana, behave yourself! — Ren joked

— Why me?! — Morgana exclaimed.

— Okay then, let's go.

Shibuya District. Madarame's Atelier.

17:00

— I hope everyone's ready because that will be a rough heist.

— We are. — Ryuji, Morgana, Ann, and Yusuke replied.

— Very well. Chief Miles.

Miles and Ren checked if anyone was seeing them, and after confirming no one was on the streets, Miles nodded to Ren, saying the coast was clear.

— Very well, let's go. — Ren said, inputting the destination on the Metaverse Navigator. Everything started to distort as the atelier changed, becoming a gaudy museum.
