With much suspicion towards Picquery Newt said, "For the record Madame President I do not trust you. But I cannot deny that this is my best option. Have Gringotts draw up a magical contract and I will sign it. Do not try to trick me, Madame President. This is your only warning."
Picquery regarded him for a moment with a strangely approving look. If she thought she could win his trust by simple approval she had another thing coming. He trusted the goblins to keep things within reason. The goblins used a form of Low Magick themselves but which he wasn't sure. They never would answer him on the subject when he tried to ask.
In the time waiting for the goblins Newt refused to speak or look at the MACUSA President. His magic coiled protectively around him sending his disquiet. After a few attempts at small talk Picquery decided to focus on the growing pile of paperwork on her desk.
What he had told her was true. He didn't trust her. At this point he didn't think there was a witch or wizard of High Magick he did trust. Well maybe Tina. Her betrayal in bringing him to the Ministry still stung but she helped him break out. So maybe. Not sure on her yet.
Jacob however he did know he could trust the slightly portly man. At first he had thought Jacob was a squib but the escape from the cells had proved that thought wrong. Low Magick and it's connections between people and the world was a finicky thing. Connections could be made between every magical being including squibs. There was a large misconception about squibs. Squibs had magic but they did not have pathways to access it. They were the byproduct of too much inbreeding. What Low Magick would not make a connection with was a muggle. That made Jacob at the very least a squib.
It took the goblins an hour to write up and bring a contract. Newt looked it over silently watching for any possible treachery on the woman's part. He was surprised when he didn't find any. She was genuine in her offer and the protection would be magically binding.
As soon as the contract was signed he was unlocking his case and headed inside. When Picquery made as if to follow he gave her a look that could have made Nancy proud. She put her hands up in surrender allowing him to do his checks on his own. Thankfully none of his creatures were hurt by the actions of Grindelwald. They were nervous but jittery but that was normal whenever a new person entered the case. He sent off calming feelings to his creatures and gentle touches as allowed.
Teddy sat on Newt's shoulder as he came out of his case. Picquery had once more returned to her work and didn't glance up at him. He took the moment to allow Teddy to get the scents of the room.
When Picquery an eyebrow raised in question looked up he asked, "Do you have something of Graves's that wouldn't be contaminated with Grindelwald's scent? It could be anything I just need a baseline."
She looked from him to the niffler he had on his shoulder considering for a moment. Then she nodded and rummaged around in her desk until she found a pocket watch. Curious. If that was Graves's then why did she have it?
As if hearing his question she said, "I was hoping to have it fixed for Percival as a present for his years of service. The pocket watch maker I found could not fix it however. I just forgot to return it to him."
Newt took the silver pocket watch and held it up to Teddy. His nifffler's eyes sparkled with interest as he grabbed it.
"Find him, Teddy," he said softly.
Teddy looked back at him. He understood what Newt was saying. Their magic and mind's intertwined in a communion. With that done he gave the gentle prod again.
Immediately Teddy jumped from his shoulder and began sniffing around the room. Newt waited for him to decide on a path. It only took a few minutes for Teddy to get on the scent trail. He shot out of the office Newt was right behind him.
In the hallways aurors jump away from the niffler. A few of them gave Newt odd looks as he rushed after Teddy. A few called out scolding him for letting a creature loose. Newt ignored them. Tina and Queenie ended up catching up to him as he passed through the atrium.
Tina asked loud enough to he heard over the loud atrium, "Newt what happened? Why are you running around after your niffler?"
Newt replied as they headed towards another set of offices, "I came to an agreement with President Picquery. Teddy there is looking for the real Graves as per our agreement."
Queenie looked at him but she didn't say anything in response. They stayed with him in following Teddy until they reached an unfamiliar office.
Tina gasped, "This is Graves's office. Why did your niffler bring us to the office?"
Teddy slipped under the door still following the scents. Newt was thoughtful however if he was Grindelwald he would want to keep a prisoner close. Especially one as important as Graves. So he opened the door and went in.
Tina hissed, "Newt you can't just go in there. Newt!"
Newt ignored her. The office was a nice room. It had two medium sized couches and two nice chairs. The desk was made of a dark wood and papers were piled fairly high. He couldn't see Teddy from where he stood so he moved into the office.
The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as he felt wards react to his presence. They were try to push him to leave the office. That there was nothing here for him. A shudder ran through Newt. It was obvious that Grindelwald made strong wards to prevent people from searching the office for Graves. Subtle in a way that if he wasn't intune to the magic within him and the world around him he would have ignored the office.
Forcing his way through the magic he headed for the desk. The closer he got to the desk the more the magic tried to push him into leaving. Pushing through it was more difficult but his connection to Teddy made him stronger. Teddy was trying to pick the lock of the bottom desk drawer.
Newt picked him up gently and praised, "Good job Teddy."
He cut the connection between him and Teddy then. Calling forth his wand from it's holster he pointed it at the drawer. Silently he cast Alohomora. High magick wasn't his specialty but he could cast some basic spells.
The drawer popped open and Teddy jumped into rummaging about. It only took a few minutes for him to come back out with a small tin container. Triumph was in the dark eyes of his niffler. Gently he picked up Teddy and took the tin from him. It wasn't very shiny so he didn't have an issue with taking it.
There were more wards on this tin. They were powerful but he could pick at them and disable them. He recognized a few life sustaining ones but those were weak compared to the notice me not ones. If much more time had passed they would have failed and the person or thing inside would have died.
Tina who followed him in asked, "What's that?"
"A prison," he said as the wards dropped, "Go get Picquery and the medics."
"What?"
"I think I found Graves."
