John rushed across Angel Square and could see the smoke coming from the direction of Rodi's already. He heard the fire engine sirens nearby, but didn't want to wait for protocol. Rushing in he started yelling for her and suddenly had memories of other moments going through his head.
Hey, come on. I didn't pull you out of that burning car so you could die on me now.
I know that Liam's ok and you're ok, and that's all that matters to me. You know, when I saw you on that pavement, I, uh-let's just say you got to be pretty amazing to survive a fall like that.
That was a nice shot, Lieutenant. You saved me.
I wouldn't have taken the shot if I-I didn't think I could drop the son of a bitch.
The memories returning should have stopped him in his tracks, but instead had pushed him forward and through the smoky bar. Making his way into the kitchen he felt the heat of the flames and pushed back memories of other fires. Seeing the office door open he went towards it and saw her lying on the floor.
"Hey, I'm here," he whispered as he kneeled down and checked for a pulse. The fire hadn't reached the office yet so he closed the door and pushed some towels under the door to keep the smoke out.
He grabbed his jacket and put it over his mouth to filter the smoke out while he pulled his phone out and called dispatch, "This is John McBain. Tell the firefighters working on the Rodi's scene that myself and another person are in the office. I've got the office door closed to keep out the smoke, but they need to know there are two people in here to rescue."
Hearing dispatch relay the message to the crew outside he hung up and then sat down next to Natalie. "Help is on its way," he said as he looked down at her sleeping and waited for it to arrive.
John sat there, listening to the beeps of the machines. He'd forced himself into the room-though they kept saying he wasn't family so he shouldn't be there, "Come on, sweetheart, wake up," he said softly as he brushed her hair out of her face. "Open your eyes from the dark," he whispered and put his head down.
"Just lucky, I guess."
He kept his head down, just praying to anyone that would listen for her to wake up and be ok. Hearing the door open behind him he glanced back to see Bo walking in. He didn't say anything-hadn't let on to anyone yet that he had his memories back. Mainly because the first person he wanted to tell was her.
"How's our girl?" asked Bo as he walked in and up to the bed.
"She hasn't woken up yet. Is there something else?" he said, seeing a look on Bo's face that said when he came in here it wasn't just to check on her.
"Her family would like to see her. Clint is out there raising hell to anyone that will listen right now about how you shouldn't be in here because you aren't family."
"Like hell I'm not. Sometimes family is more than DNA-or a piece of paper that never got signed because of an interrupted wedding."
Bo looked at John with a shocked expression-he hadn't been expecting him to bring that up, "Who told you about that?"
"Nobody-everything came back to me when I went in to rescue her," he said as he looked back at Natalie lying there. "I'll leave for a bit-probably need to check on some things. Call me the second she wakes up if I'm not back yet. Ok?"
"I will-and I won't tell anyone about your memories. I'll let you tell her first."
"Thanks, Bo," he said with a nod before leaving.
John walked into Rodi's and put his hand on the wet felt of the pool table. Looking around he noticed the firefighters had done a great job earlier trying to keep the damage to a minimum. This area was mostly smoke and water damage, Making his way over to the doorway between there and the kitchen he saw it was a total loss.
"McBain."
He turned at hearing his name and went to shake the firefighter's hand that had come in, "Hey, Carl. Thanks for everything earlier."
"Wish we could have done more."
"You saved me and Natalie, I think that's enough in my book," he laughed.
"How is she?"
"She hadn't woken up when I left, but I'm sure she'll be fine. Any clue how this started?" he asked, looking back into the blackened kitchen, trying to ignore the flame marks that had been left on the door frame to the office.
"You know we have to wait for the Inspector to do his job," he said, giving John a side eye. "But I would be shocked if we didn't find some sort of accelerant."
Stepping back off the hospital elevator John turned and headed towards Natalie's room. He'd been finishing up the call with the insurance company when Bo had texted she was awake. He knew she needed her rest, but he just wanted to see her for a few minutes.
Coming around the corner he watched Jessica as she stepped out and closed the door quietly, "Hey. How is she?"
"She's ok-I'm sorry about Rodi's."
John shrugged, keeping his eyes on the door that Natalie was behind, "It can be rebuilt-there are some things that you can never replace."
"Yeah," she said with a slight smile. "Liam-."
"I'll pick him up later and he can stay with me for the night."
"Of course-I was just thinking you have a lot on your plate, and Natalie's not going to be released until tomorrow."
"Right-I just think I'd like my son to be with me tonight."
"Sure," she said as she read John and realized something was off. She knew he didn't have his memories, but it was almost as if he was talking to her the way he always did. "I'm going to go-don't stay too long, she needs to rest."
He just gave her a nod as she walked past him and then went into the room. Natalie was sitting there with her eyes closed, but he could tell she wasn't sleeping.
"Did you forget something, Jess?" she asked, not opening her eyes yet.
"I don't think so," he said as he came over and took a chair and pulled it up to the bed.
"John-hey," she said as she looked at him for a moment before down at her hands. "I'm sorry-when I got the call the guy was so persistent-I should have just called you and let you deal with him. Maybe it would have turned out differently."
"It's ok-I'm just glad you are ok. What do you remember?"
"I got over to Rodi's-there was a truck on the side that looked like it was to be unloaded. There was even a dolly with boxes stacked on it ready to bring in. I let the guy in the back door and went to the office. I wanted to see who made this order-because I knew I had called the vendor and cancelled the original order myself.
"I heard him in the kitchen-I thought he was unloading, but I guess he was putting gasoline out. I found the folder for the orders, but of course there wasn't a new one. I was just about to confront the guy when he came up from behind me and put a rag over my mouth." She paused, not wanting to say the last words she heard the man say as she drifted into unconsciousness.
"What is it Natalie?"
She sighed, not wanting to argue that it was nothing, "He said that since you took Raul's livelihood away this was only fair."
"Damn it," growled John, his head down in thought. "I didn't want this to happen-I didn't think Raul would be the type for vengeance. By coming back I put you and Liam in jeopardy. I'm sorry, Natalie."
Natalie covered his hand with hers and gave it a squeeze, "Hey-I know you would never put either me or Liam in danger."
She was quiet, trying to get him to make eye contact with her. When he wouldn't she asked a question she'd had before he had come in. "Jess said you saved me."
He nodded before finally looking at her. "Yeah, I was already looking for you this morning-I'd wanted to apologize for last night. And Mandy in the lab told me about the call so I was going to come help you. Bo stopped me first and told me they'd received a call for a fire at Rodi's."
Looking back down at her hand on his he began to speak. "Last night-when we were talking about memories at Rodi's you were thinking of Liam being conceived. And that night-while it was great to finally reconnect with each other, it's not my favorite.
"Mine is that first Christmas. That is where our friendship truly started-because I knew you then that you had stopped hating me for what happened in Vegas."
When he finished speaking he looked up at her and saw the tears in her eyes, "Hey-what's wrong?"
"Your memories."
"They came back when I ran into Rodi's to save you. I guess that's all I needed," he said as he moved forward and kissed her forehead. "You need to rest. Everything else can wait."
