Chapter 20: Illness..
Hecate had been on full lock down for a week. She wasn't allowed to do her usual Teaching and Monitoring due to two reasons. One being that Ada Insested she needed time to recover. The Second being that she wasn't classed as safe to be in a potions lab, not with her magic the way it is now.
Hecate went about her week reorganising all the places she missed thanks to her summer off. She also managed to get the next few months of tests ready to go. It really was quite productive. In the times she was completely alone, she'd practise her magic, building back up that strength, and regaining her control. Ofcourse, She hasn't told anyone else that's what she was doing..
She could Just hear Ada's voice in her head.. 'Hecate! You know you need to take it steady, you're a good witch, you may even be a great witch, but even you have limits'.
Hecate was bouncing back far better than she had originally assumed she would.. She was even set to go back to form classes this week, maybe even potions if all went her way.. Unfortunately, it wouldn't be going her way in the slightest.
On This cold and frosty Monday morning, Hecate's eyes scanned across the Breakfast hall. She opened up her watch, the watch Mildred had so thoughtfully returned with her 100 lines, and noted that breakfast was almost up. Since Moving in with Hecate, Mildred kept a decent routine, mainly of being on-time to all meals. Including breakfast.
Hectare leaned over to Miss Cackle to whisper. "I know I'm meant to return to my form today, but there seems to be a Mildred-shaped student missing."
Ada looked around to confirm, Mildred was nowhere to be seen. "It seems so. I'll cover your form today…"
Hecate thanked her quietly before going on the Hunt. The first place to check would be the apartment. Maybe for once the girl simply slept in, she had been working rather hard lately, it was bound to catch up to her.
Hecate opted for walking, given the fact she didn't know who might be watching. She entered the apartment to find it rather quiet.. She closed the door steadily behind her before walking to mildreds door, she hesitated before opting to just walk in.
Lying sprawled out on her bed, somehow both pale and red faced, was Mildred. Hecate sighed as she moved closer, gently shaking Mildred. "Mildred..!" She whispered in her own threatening way.
Mildred shot up, "What-Where-Hu-" She started, but she quickly stopped when she saw Hecate. "Oh-S-Shorry.. I.. Did i shleep in?" She asked.. There was a notable Horsness to her voice, paired with the running nose impending her speech.. Hecate placed a hand on top of Mildreds Forehead.
"You're burning up, Mildred. Lie back down." Hecate commanded. Mildred did just as she was told, lying down back into her bed.
"Hecate.." She muttered. "I don't feel too good.."
"No, I can see that much.." Hecate turned on her heels, walking out the room to collect her Maglet before returning. "You're in no fit state to be attending lessons, Mildred."
Hecate typed out a quick message to Miss Tapioca to bring some Porridge to Mildred. Then she wrote one to Pippa, letting her know Mildred was sick. And Finally, she shot a message off to Miss Cackle letting her know why Mildred wasn't around.
"Hecate.." Mildred sniffed slightly as she spoke, looking up at her teacher. "Do you know.. I mean.. Are you.. Aware.." Mildred let out a harsh cough, seemingly throwing her off whatever she was saying.
"Am I aware of what, Mildred?" Hecate pushed.
"That.. the other shtudents.. Call you.. Hach-Bee…" Mildred looked over at her as if she'd just told some massive secret.
"Yes, Mildred. I'm Aware.." How could Hecate Not be. "And I'll let you know now, I am fine with it. There are far worse things they could have come up with." Hecate.. Had the habit of not being well liked. When she'd first found out the students called her HB, she was overjoyed. Well, as overjoyed as she could be. After all, it was hardly a nickname, and more stating the obvious. There were far worse things they could've chosen to focus on.
"Oh.. That's good.." Mildred nodded slightly. "I calls it you too.. When I'm with enid.. And maud…And the others..." It felt almost like the girl was confessing all her secrets in her overly tired and ill state.. However, it wasn't much of a secret.
"Yes, Mildred. I know." Hecate found it almost amusing.. Almost.
Mildred nodded, going quiet. Probably thinking of more 'secrets' she could tell Hecate.. She looked about ready to speak, when a knock came at the door. Hecate left the room to open it, finding Miss Tapioca at the door with a tray.
"I won't be doing room service every day, Miss Hardbroom" She said as she walked in, going to the room Hecate pointed at. Mildred looked completely zonked, just staring at the celening like it was telling her all the answers to the universe.
"Mildred, Sit up now." Hecate told the girl.
"But hecate.." Mildred attempted to whine, being shut down by hecate's stare. She was having breakfast whether she liked it, or not. Mildred slowly sat up, allowing Miss Tapioca to place the tray on Mildreds Lap. "Thank you.." Mildred muttered, looking worse for wear.
"Thank you, Miss Tapioca." Hecate said, nodding to the annoyed cook before she left.
Hecate stepped outside while Mildred was eating to Conjure a wet flannel, deeming it a necessary thing to keep Mildred from Overheating. She waited a few moments before heading back into Mildreds room to find her passed out. Head rolled back, tray still on her lap. With a wave of her hand, the tray disappeared. She Quietly moved mildred back down before placing the Flannel on top of her forehead.
She's dealt with many sick children over the years. Watched countless girls fall ill to colds, coughs, flues and sickness. The Protocol was simple. They were to remain in their room, Their form Teacher was incharge of checking up on them. If they were throwing up, they were to be withdrawn from food. Otherwise, a girl would be sent up with food for them.
There was an awful lot of care involved. Half the time you gave the child space to get over it in their own time. Plenty of rest and relaxation. If it was really back, their parents would pick them up.
Despite dealing with all these children over the years, None of them were her own. Her own as in her ward, Not as in her child. Mildred was not her daughter, that notion was just ridiculous.. Anyone who knew Hecate knew that she just wouldn't do as a Mother..
The Thought of Mildred as her own, scared Hecate. Actually Scared her. She felt for the short run, all would be well. Mildred was Hardly in her last year, But then what? They shake hands and only see each other at the Ten Year Reunion? Did Hecate even want to be stuck with Mildred for her entire life?
Surprisingly, Yes, She did. She wanted to see Mildred Succeed in life. She only hoped she might be a part of that. She had no clue what Mildred Might do in the future.. There were many opportunities for young witches, it just depended on which route she wanted to take.. Did Mildred even know the possibilities? It'd have to be a talk for when Mildred Gets better.
Hecate hates not knowing what will happen. Just Hates it.
Question for my loyal readers.. I see you. Would you be intrested in more storys after this one? I intended for "A New Year" To Go over the whole of this year, but would you be be intrested in seeing Her Last yeat too? I already have an idea for another "summer time" flick to come after this one. (It'll be diffrent to the last one..) - Speaking of her years, I acedently wrote her as a 3rd year a few chapters ago.. iv edited it now, but just my tired brain not clicking shes in year 4 here XD
Anyway, REVIEW!
