Chapter 1: Unexpected Savior/
"Untie me now!" Hayley commanded in a desperate angry tone as she struggled to break free from her bindings holding her to a chair
"I can't" Roman argues back with a desperate conflicted tone
"No, but I can," Lizzie says as she releases her invisibility cloaking spell and grabbed hold of Roman quickly draining him of power and making him fall to the ground in a magically induced desiccated state
Thud. Roman's body hits the ground. Both Hayley and Hope stared in shock at their unexpected savior. Hayley dimly remembers that the girl before her and Hope were one of the two daughters that Caroline and Alaric had. Hope for her part was shocked to see Lizzie the girl she had been rejecting friendship with for the last 7 years.
"Lizzie?! How long have you been here? Are you also part of this?!" Hope says anger, confusion, and desperation in her voice
"Long enough, also Hi Miss Marshall. Let's get you out of here before his mom shows up or he regains enough strength to get up." Lizzie says rushing over to untie Hayley's restraints
"I hate to ask but why were you following my daughter? Also, thanks and you can call me Hayley. Now we should probably hurry before Greta comes back," Hayley retorts as she rubs her writs
"Wait Greta is Roman's mom?!" Hope asks shock at the revelation
Hayley was not one to turn down a gift when it presented itself and Lizzie presented a huge gift. Lizzie had knocked out Roman and released the enchanted rope bindings that formally tied Hayley to a chair. Before Hayley could respond to her daughter's shock and question Lizzie cut her off by talking.
"I wasn't following Hope. I was following him. Another thing is I am not part of whatever messed up thing he is doing. Now to just find the keys to breaking those cuffs off Hope. I have yet to be taught a spell to break magical shackles," Lizzie quickly explains as she searches Roman's bag for keys
"How can we trust you?" Hope questions skeptically as she hugs her mom and looks over to where Lizzie is hovering over Roman's bag
Hayley thought Hope's question strange but also valid so she waited to see what the blonde siphon witch would say before doing or saying anything. Lizzie pauses her search for the keys to give Hope's distrust her full attention. Lizzie understood Hope's distrust to an extent with the girl constantly turning her offer for friendship down. Lizzie began ignoring or poking fun at Hope when she got the chance because rejection in any form stung so to protect herself, she would be angry at Hope.
"Okay, I might not be your biggest fan Hope, but even I could tell that creep was no good. I tracked his shady ass down to this place after I saw him looking suspicious leaving my dad's office. Had I known that Miss Marshal, Sorry Hayley your mom was trapped in here I would have done more faster. When I saw him making moves on you, I nearly blew my cover, and I was tempted to leave you two in peace until I heard him talk to Greta. Greta said something about hiding someone and I knew immediately I had to keep tailing his ass. Thankfully the place surrounding this place is imbued with magic and your Aunt Freya leaves a lot of magical artifacts around for me to keep my cloaking spell up. I don't know why you keep pushing people away when you are so damn lonely, but if you don't want to trust me or like me, fine. Just believe me that I don't want to die in some dingy-ass abandoned house with crazy fanatic vampires that might loom ever closer as we argue," Lizzie passionately defends her reasoning for being there before going back to looking through Roman's bag
Hope felt a bit angry that Lizzie was so blunt with her words. Hope also thought Lizzie was a stalker with the fact that she was spying on her and Roman. Hayley thought Lizzie's last statement to be one of the truest statements she had ever heard. Hayley also did not want to die in this abandoned house and was sure she would before anyone found her. Hope was about to argue that she wasn't lonely when a door creaked open, and a voice called out.
"Roman, You here? Greta told me to come help with the binding spell," a witch calls out as she opens the door to the house
"Son of a bitch. I forgot about the witch, the one who probably spelled the barrier spell and the spell on the ropes that held your mom. We don't have much time and I rather we all live here⦠Ow. Drink. I'll hide Hope" Lizzie responds in a tight whisper as she finds a small knife in Roman's bag and cuts her wrist to offer to Hayley
"Make no mistake I will kill you if you harm Hope," Hayley says in a harsh whisper before grabbing hold of the offered bloody wrist and sinking her fangs in
It only took a split second for Hayley to give into her vampire hunger for blood. Her strength came back within seconds of sucking the life nectar out of Lizzie's writs. Hayley noted the small old scars on Lizzie's wrist but opted to not say anything as it was not the time to question the girl. Hayley would have also noted that Lizzie's blood tasted sweet if not for the fact they were strapped for time.
"Noted. Invisique." Lizzie recites the spell making her and Hope invisible just as a witch that Roman called for entered the room
"How did you get untied and what magic did you use to desiccate Roman?" the witch asks shock on her face noticing Hayley's red lips fresh from blood and Roman's body on the ground near her feet
Swoosh. Snap. Thud. The witch's body hits the ground with a broken neck killing her.
"Okay, so Hope's mom is a badass now we should get out of here before any more death and destruction can occur," Lizzie says a little uncomfortable with having just witnessed a witch being killed in front of her and dropping the cloaking spell on her and Hope
"Are you making a dig at my mom Lizzie?" Hope argues defensively turning to glare at Lizzie
"No, I'm just still not all that comfortable with killing. Death in general really even though it's sort of inevitable with the life we live. Also, I was trying to compliment your mom. The only other two people that I have witnessed that were badass was and are my mom Caroline and my Aunt Bonnie. Also, I'm 12 years old and again do not want to die in a dingy ass abandoned house whose already probably seen a bunch of witches dead if the ground is saturated with magic is anything to go by," Lizzie defends her previously made statement
Hope still hurt from Roman's recent betrayal cannot help but keep glaring at Lizzie. Hope was about to say something clever about having the last word when she was beaten to the chase by her mom interrupting her and Lizzie's staring contest. Hayley could understand Lizzie's point of view and appreciated it and in some regards envied that Hope also did not have that view of death.
"Okay, as cute as your little argument is Lizzie do you have a cell phone and if so, can we use it to call Klaus or anyone that can get us out of here?" Hayley interrupts Lizzie's and Hope's little spat
"Yes, here I recently got it the only numbers I have are Josie, my mom, and my dad's number in there," Lizzie responds as she hands over her cell phone to Hayley ending her heated glare at Hope
/
Ring, Ring. Caroline's cell phone goes off with Lizzie's picture popping up on her screen to show she is calling
"Hi baby now is not the time to be calling and if you are calling you should see Josie or your dad," Caroline answers her cell phone putting the phone on speakerphone
"Hi, Caroline. It's Hayley, Hope's mom," Hayley starts to say before being cut off by Klaus
Both Klaus and Caroline share a glance between each-other shock written on their face at hearing Hayley's voice on the other end of the phone line.
"Hayley is Hope with you?" Klaus says with fear and urgency of a protective father
"Klaus? Yeah, Hope is here we are okay thanks to Lizzie," Hayley responds shock in her voice at hearing Klaus's voice
Hayley puts a hand up to halt Hope from grabbing the cell phone from her ear. Hayley glances at Lizzie as Caroline talks. Lizzie was occupying herself by emptying the remaining contents of Roman's bag, still looking for a key for Hope's shackles.
"Oh god, Lizzie should not even be wherever you are. Don't get me wrong I am glad that she helped you and Hope, but she is only 12 years old and should be in class not skipping. Klaus and I will be at your location as soon as we can," Caroline says in a mothering annoyed tone
"Okay, I think you should know that I killed a witch already so I don't know if there are any more people coming here. Roman has been knocked out courtesy of your daughter's powers. Hope currently has her magic bound but Lizzie is looking in Roman's bag to find a key to break the shackles off Hope. Before you ask Klaus our daughter is safe a bit shaken at Roman's betrayal but otherwise safe," Hayley says giving a run down to Caroline and Klaus
"Klaus, no you are not going to hang or parade Roman's dead body around New Orleans. Hayley, can you please keep the kids safe we will be there as fast as we can. Thank you for telling us and see you soon," Caroline says before hanging up the cellphone
/
"Roman?" Greta calls out as she opens the door to the house
"Hide the both of you now," Hayley says urging the two girls to hide as she moved to get into a position to attack Greta
"What no I want to fight with you," Hope pleads stepping closer to Hayley
"Hope now is not the time to argue with me," Hayley says trying to push Hope to hide with Lizzie
"Too late to hide you're both going to die for desiccating Roman," Greta says with a cold furry rushing at the both of them only to clash with Hayley at vampire speed
Thud. Crash. Both Hayley and Greta collide into various walls before Hayley gets the upper hand and pins Greta to the hallway entry wall of the house by her throat.
"Mom!" Hope cries out unsure of how to help her mom as Lizzie still hadn't found the key to release the shackles
"Hayley!" Klaus shouts as he enters the house with Elijah hot on his trail
Swoosh. Thud. Klaus hits the ground with his knees as a wooden stake is impaled into his body thanks to Elijah
"Elijah?" Hayley questions confusion and surprise entering her tone as she has Greta by the throat
"Elijah, save me and Roman," Greta barks out between breaths as Hayley has slightly loosened her hold on her
Elijah pauses at seeing Hayley almost as if a flicker of recognition had passed through him, but Greta's words snap him to his original task of saving the brother of a woman he loved. Elijah twisted the stake further into Klaus before taking steps toward Hayley and Greta only to be stopped again in his tracks by Hope's voice.
"Dad?!" Hope cries out as she rushes to get to Klaus's side not caring if she were hurt in the process only stopping when Klaus told her to stop
"Stop Hope. Elijah! Don't even think about it!" Klaus threatens while he groans in pain desperate to make sure Hope was safe
"Elijah kill the girl now!" Greta shouts as she fights against Hayley's stronghold on her throat
Lizzie sneaked behind Elijah and grabbed hold of both his wrists before he had a chance to move further, she siphons Elijah quickly. Elijah just had enough time to turn and see who attacked him before he feels the effects of magically induced desiccation. Lizzie had taken off her cloaking spell when she started to siphon Elijah.
Thud. Elijah hits the ground desiccated.
"NO! You freak you will pay with your life" Greta shouts at seeing Elijah hit the ground.
Hayley takes the opportunity to rip off Greta's finger that holds her daylight ring on it before throwing Greta's weakened and shocked body out the front door. Greta's body goes up in flames before she can speed her way back into the house.
"Ah!" Greta screams out as she dies in flames
"Noo!" Roman shouts vampire speeding to kneel beside Greta's flaming corpse
Klaus, Hayley, Hope, and Lizzie look on with somber expressions as they hear Roman's soul-shattering cries of loss.
/
"You're still here? I thought you and your mom would have taken off by now?" Hayley comments as she closes Hope's bedroom door and turns to see Lizzie on the balcony hallway
"My mom is resting and Klaus told me to quote don't bloody touch anything that is not mine. So here I am waiting to go home and trying my best to not anger the original hybrid or any of his other family members, not that I have seen them. He is still angry at the fact that I desiccated Elijah even though Elijah was stalking forward towards you and Hope," Lizzie explains with a shrug
"For an unexpected savior, how did you know that Roman's mom was a fanatic vampire and how did you tail them if you didn't have a vehicle to drive? Another thing is the scars on your wrist. What are they from?" Hayley questions getting closer to Lizzie and just now taking the time to think about what had recently occurred earlier
Lizzie took a breath before turning to fully face Hayley. Lizzie had been expecting these types of questions but also didn't think they would be so direct.
"Direct and to the point. I like that. I ran into Roman's mother Greta when she came for a parent-teacher conference. She just came out of the bathroom, and I was going in between classes. She um, she cornered me and told me that my sister needed me in a different room. I fell for that trick once and it nearly killed me, so I didn't trust Greta when she told me that my sister was in a different room. When she realized, I was not going to fall for her trick she grabbed me by the throat and slammed me into the hallway wall. She told me I was an abomination, a freak parasite of nature that my dad should have drowned so I wouldn't be a broken witch." Lizzie starts to explain only to be cut off by Hayley's outburst of rage
The more Lizzie talked the more Hayley became intrigued to know more about her. The line about the fact that Lizzie was nearly killed before and how she delivered the line sent a chill down Hayley's spine. Hayley couldn't help but compare some of her rough upbringing and the many tales she had heard from Klaus's family about near-death occurrences. Hayley's blood started to boil with every descriptive word that Greta told Lizzie. The part about being broken hit the hardest and Hayley couldn't help to be offended that an adult figure would do such a thing to a kid.
"You can't control how you are born. Also, you aren't broken you performed something that I never saw any other witch do with just a touch," Hayley says defensively offended that Greta would tell a child such things
"Thanks, but being a siphon I can desiccate any vampire with touch it's one of the only good things about being a siphon witch. Getting back to answering your questions. I snuck into Roman's car thus I was able to tail him and Hope. I am surprised that he didn't catch on to the fact that I was in the car with him and Hope since he should have been able to hear or smell me thanks to vampire senses. Then again, I have snuck up on my mom who is also a vampire, but she was also engaged in a conversation with some parents." Lizzie rambles and reasons as to how she was able to get the drop on Roman
Hayley wanted to question what a siphon witch was but also figured she could ask Freya about the topic later. Hayley was also impressed that a 12-year-old girl was able to get the drop on Roman and Hope for so long but also knew from experience that the vampire has to be suspicious before they truly engage all their heightened senses.
"I should thank you and your curiosity to tail Roman. If it wasn't for you Hope and I might have not made it out of there alive or without having a part of us bound." Hayley says after a minute of comfortable silence
"It was the right thing to do. Also, I had a gut feeling if I didn't follow Roman, I would live to regret it. Plus, it wasn't like I missed much at school besides my sister. Speaking of my sister you were right to question my motives for tailing Roman. I didn't trust the guy, but I was also trying to state my curiosity. You see, my sister and I believe most of the school, if not the whole town of Mystic Falls, absolutely adores Hope. I was trying to figure it out and to be honest, I am still on the fence. I mean she is practically infuriatingly perfect in many ways and yet I can't help but say all the wrong things to her. Doesn't help that every time I tried to befriend her she rejected me. I can only take so much rejection before it starts to sink in that maybe I'm the problem. So yeah I poke at her for always being so damn good at everything. A part of that is jealousy and another part of that is spite because I don't like rejection. I'm sorry my little rivalry with Hope nearly got us all killed. I was trying my best to put aside my feelings and do the right thing. On a different topic, the scars on my wrist well let's just say they were an experiment," Lizzie answers in a calm somber honest tone
Hayley was surprised to hear about the affection that Hope had at the school. Hayley understood why Lizzie talked back to Hope in the abandoned house with the confession that Lizzie had given. Hayley liked the honesty that Lizzie gave to her. Hayley also thought that Lizzie might have a crush on Hope, but from what Lizzie said it seemed that Lizzie herself did not know her true feelings about Hope. The scars on Lizzie's wrist did worry Hayley as a concerned adult looking at a kid.
"They were an experiment for what?" Hayley asked concern and curiosity in her tone
"The trick of saying my sister was in danger I fell for it. Two years ago a guy came to the school and lured me to an empty classroom saying Josie was hurt. By the time I realized it was a trap and a mistake it was too late. Next thing I knew I woke up in a dingy basement with my hands cuffed in shackles tied to the ceiling. The first and only kind thing that my kidnapper did was break my twin bond so that my sister Josie would not feel any of the pain that I was about to go through. I don't know what spell he used or what enchantments were on the blade he used on me but it broke my twin bond connection to my sister. Losing the bond it felt like a part of me died. The best comparison would be a sire bond I think? I read about it once. A deep connection to someone you care for, someone you would die for someone you would follow their every word be out of gratitude or love. The bond that I shared with my sister was different from a sire bond in the sense that neither of us could order the other around. Another thing with the twin bond connection is that we used to be able to feel when the other got hurt even if it was a paper cut. After the kidnapping, I cut my wrist to see if the bond was broken, and sure enough, my sister didn't feel a thing. At first, I thought this was a good thing. Then I realized if my sister was hurt I wouldn't know and that scared me. I occasionally cut to see if the connection is truly forever gone and so far it has been. I also cut because part of me believes that my outside should match my inside messy broken. Please don't tell my mom about the scars," Lizzie recalls as she wipes a teardrop away from her face in a pleading tone
Hayley couldn't help but feel her heartbreak for the young blonde. She also wasn't sure if she was glad that Lizzie did not share the details of what the guy did to break a magical bond, but it must have been painful. Hayley had heard about sire bonds between vampires and between hybrids and how painful it could be to break them. Hayley's friend Tyler Lockwood came to mind when she thought of sire bonds.
"Could you promise to not cut yourself again?" Hayley asked concern and worry in her tone
"I am not going to promise something that I can't keep. I don't want to worry my mom more than she already is so could you please not say anything? I haven't cut recently and I am not addicted to the pain as you saw when I flinched at cutting my wrist to offer blood to you earlier. I also don't plan to cut too much in the future seeing as I live at a school full of newbie vampires and I don't want to accidentally set them off, "Lizzie responds by defending her reasoning
"You are going to have to tell her eventually and it's a parent's job to worry about their kid," Hayley says with a sympathetic tone
"Right, thanks. Um," Lizzie says before pausing to look at the incoming person who was walking towards them
Lizzie's eyes moved to see Elijah standing now at the top of the staircase of the balcony hallway. Hayley noticed the change in Lizzie's attention, so she turned to see what caught Lizzie's attention. Hayley was shocked to see Elijah standing at the top of the staircase balcony hallway.
"Apologies for interrupting. Who are you? I would like to thank the person who stopped me from harming those I hold dear to me," Elijah addresses the young blonde looking between Hayley and Lizzie
"They brought your memories back?" Hayley comments with a mix of joy and surprise a small smile forming on her face
"They did and I owe you an apology for even thinking about harming you or Hope. I had no memories and thus the emotions that connected me to you and Hope were gone. Niklaus, Rebekah, Kol, Freya, and Marcel helped me get my memories back but it would have not been possible if not for you. My brother told me you are a siphon witch thus you were able to desiccate me with just a touch. Only Freya and Niklaus knew about what you are and that you could desiccate any vampire with a touch," Elijah explains as he looks to Hayley and then to Lizzie
"If you think I am good you should meet my fraternal twin Josie. She would have come except she is a goody-two-shoes and well I can't fall too far down with disappointing my parents than I already do. Anyways my name is Lizzie Saltzman. I should probably go check on my mom. Looks like you two have some catching up to do," Lizzie says in a hasty getaway from the two grownups
Both Hayley and Elijah thought Lizzie's self-deprecating comment a bit sad considering that Lizzie was only 12 years old. Elijah also couldn't help but draw a parallel between Kol, and Klaus and how both of his younger brothers see him as a goody-two-shoes. Hayley mostly just wanted to tell Lizzie she couldn't possibly be a disappointment if she is going out of her way to save Hope and herself.
"Elizabeth, thank you for stopping me and for protecting my family when I could not. Your kindness will not be forgotten," Elijah comments making Lizzie stop in her tracks to leave
"As I told Hayley it was the right thing to do. Plus I would hope that someone would stop me if I ever tried to harm my loved ones. Anyways goodnight Elijah and Hayley." Lizzie responds turning once more to leave the two adults to talk
/
Author's Note: I wanted Hayley to be alive during the Legacies tv-series thing so thought to change a few things around from the Originals tv series. More changes will be revealed later down the line. Also, I chose to have the twin bond between Lizzie and Josie already broken. I just feel it did not fit with the Vampire Diaries and Originals series lore that was on twins from the Gemini coven. I mean they might have been able to feel each other because they were both born siphon witches, but no other twins in the series ever had a twin bond that made the other feel pain when they did.
