Chapter 39: The Results

Mildred was so very Nervous.. Monday morning rolled around faster than she had ever expected. She blinked and missed her first week! Now she was being seated in the Main hall, just buzzing with anxiety and dread. What if she simply wasn't good enough for a head girl? What if they told her she wasn't worthy, that she was still the worst witch in school? More dauntingly, what if they actually put her through? Would she be going head to head with Ethel? That has never ended well for either of them in the past.. Her worry somewhat melted when she saw Hecate and Pippa walk in, Hecate side eyed Mildred, offering her the shortest nod in comfort.

Soon, Miss Cackle Joined them on the stage, bringing her hands up as a greeting to the young students. "Well Meet, Girls!"

"Well Meet, Miss Cackle." The girls replied.

"Now, I know you're all very Curious about the future of your school.. But first, Allow me to Announce that tomorrow we will be having a school inspector come to visit. Nothing bad, I assure you..." Last time there was an inspection, Miss cackle lost her role as Headmistress.. It may not be because of anything bad, but it was still something to worry about!

"Now, I'd like to Introduce you to your five applicants for Head girl.. Now, when I call your name, please come stand on the stage.." Miss Cackle nodded to Hecate and Pippa. They stood up in perfect unison, Each one holding a few badges in their hands. "Once here, Either Miss Hardbroom, or Miss Pentangle, will Place the Badge onto your sash.. " She held up a small Badge, It was similar to the school badge. The background was black, with a white moon, and the cat seemed to show the colour of the sash.

Miss Cackle smiled brightly as she called out; "Ethel Hallow!" There was a small applause, mainly from Drusilla.. Of Course she was picked.. She stepped up to the Stage, Having Hecate Move in front of her, with a quick hand movement, the Badge attached itself to Ethel's sash.

"Andrea Sledwick!" Miss Cackle Called out. Andrea stood from the crowd, moving to join Ethel on stage. Pippa moved to place her Badge on her. Mildred would be happy with Andrea as Head girl, she was sweet.

"Felicity Foxglove!" That was a little more surprising.. She just.. Couldn't see it. But she clapped nonetheless as she went onto the stage, having Hecate place the pin on her.

"Sapphire Hailstone!" Was the next name to be called, stepping up to the stage so Pippa can place the badge on her. Other than the Spelling bee, Mildred hadn't really had much to do with her, but she seemed nice enough.. But with every name called, it seemed any chance was dwindling.. It's not as if there was a major issue if she wasn't picked. She hasn't told anyone about it.. The only people who knew were the teachers..

"And lastly.. Mildred Hubble!" It felt like her soul had left her body.. Frozen in place.. Shock nailing her to the ground.. It wasn't until she felt Maud and Enid give her a solid nudge that she began walking towards the stage, acutely aware of all the eyes on her..

Breath In.. Breath out.. Left foot.. Right Foot.. Left- As she was walking, she managed to step on that loose shoelace she insisted on wearing, as she began crashing down to the ground in front of the whole school, she felt herself disappear, and materialise on stage in a black smoke..

She looked up with wide eyes to see Miss Hardbroom stood by her, her hand in its usual flick, saving Mildred from falling, but not from embarrassment.. "Thank you.." Mildred whispered.

Hecate came to stand before her. She didn't look annoyed, more amused.. Over the past few years, Mildred had been able to spot small things that completely changed the mood on her face. To most, she'd just look content, maybe a little board.. But Mildred saw it for what it really was, Amused.

Hecate Held out her hand, the badge moving from it to attach itself to Mildreds Sash before she moved back to her seat, along with Pippa.

"Ladies, Your applicants for head girl!" The students stood, clapping and gossiping. Five Girls, one position, it'd be a long few months, but Mildred was in it to win it!

When i first started Secondary school, i wanted to go for head girl.. But when the time came, it just felt like there was loads of things stacked against me. (I wasnt a 'naughty' child, i just wasnt great at school..). So i settled on just being a Prefect instead.
