Chapter 41: Chanting with Miss Broomhead

Mildred had watched Hecate with a degree of curiosity… In her head, she could hear the older witch telling her not to stand on chairs, yet here she was! There was an erratic tone to her voice that just sent a bolt of fear down Mildreds spine. Unconsciously, she quickly pulled up her socks, hoping they would remain in place, However, Mildreds eyes didn't leave Hecate as she spoke "Remember, Actions have Consequences.. It is up to you on if those are Negative, or Positive.." Was that a threat? Or a bribe? Mildred couldn't quite tell.. "I will not tolerate anything less.." That was a threat! Mildred felt that right in her bones.

Mildred continued watching, analysing her teachers every move.. Her concentration broke when she saw Pippa however. Hecate's Dress stared her in the face, causing her to let out a snickering laugh.

"Millie? What's so funny?" Maud asked from across from her.

"I think the stress is getting to her.." Enid commented.

"No.. It's.. Do you see Miss Pentangle..?" Mildred asked in a very hushed voice. They both looked over to the usually pink witch.

"I dont think i've ever seen her in anything other than pink.." Enid was bewildered..

"She wore white once.. At Halloween.." Mildred corrected her.

"She doesn't look as.." Maud tried to find the words.. "Lively.. In black." Of that Mildred could agree. This change was far from welcome, the black only made Pippa look gloomy, and not as lively as she usually was. It died down her bright nature.. Then again.. It seemed all the teachers had gone dark for today's inspection.. Dark and Crazy.

Soon, The Bell Chimed, Sending them all off to their lessons, For today, they wouldn't be partaking in form… So, First up with Chanting with Miss Bat.. She'd Promised to teach them one of her old chants! It was probably the most exciting her class could get.. But Mildred would bask in every class, knowing it wouldn't be long till she left them..

"Hello, Girls. Do sit down." Miss Bat greeted as they all walked in, taking their assigned seats.. To everyone's surprise, Miss hardbrooms words seem to have had a real effect on them, as everyone was there early..

As the bell went off, Miss Cackle, along with a woman dressed ready for a funeral appeared in their class. It reminded Mildred of the way Hecate did it.. "Sorry to interrupt Miss Bat, Myself and Miss Broomhead will be sitting in on your class for a while, if you don't mind."

"Not at all, Miss Cackle.. Miss Broomhead, Lovely to see you once more.." Miss bat nodded to the new coming witch. Miss Cackle and Miss Broomhead wandered to the back of the class, materialising chairs to sit on and watch.

A stiff air came over the classroom.. "Now, At the end of last lesson we quickly examined The Bat's Chant.. I wrote this chant a good.. Sixty-One years ago.. Back when I was Madam Vespertilio.. It summons bats.. Perfect for any festival, ritual or simply showing off.." She chuckled slightly at that. "Maud, Please open up two windows.."

Maud stood up, making her way to the windows, she quickly opened up two of them while Miss Bat grabbed her chanting sheet, looking out over the girls. When Maud finally sat down, She continued once more.

"Take a look at your Chanting sheet, you were all instructed to bring it in with you today.." Miss Bat looked among them as they took out their sheet, the chant neatly laid out before them. "At.." Miss bat sung ever so slightly, demonstrating the line "Bats shall dance for you~" She pointed to the windows. "Bats should fly in. Pay them no mind and continue the chant, Once the chant is over, they will fly back out again.. Let's give it a go, shall we."

Miss Bat moved to sit at her piano, doing her usual run of keys, allowing any girl to warm up should they wish, most settle with humming along.."And One.. Two… Three.." She counted them in as she played the tune to her song.

Together the girls sang "Tail of ox and beard of goat, Tooth of wolf and claw of stoat, Put them in a bubbling stew~"

Mildred was acutely aware of the inspector in the back of the room, the scratching of a quill on paper reminding her every few seconds.

"And then the bats shall dance for you!" The Girls sang out, as bats filled the room, fluttering and flying around the room. The girls looked up, watching them as they did their best to stay calm. The Urge to squeal and go out of control was high among the girls..

"Scatter petals from one black rose, Bring our dance now to a close~" As they sang that last line, the Bats exited from the other window, gone as fast as they came..

Miss Bat clapped. "Wonderful, Girls! Just wonderful!" Mildred felt very accomplished.. It wasn't often they made the chant work first time!

Miss Broomhead stood up from the back of the class. "Do all your lessons often go like this, Miss Bat?" Her voice sent shivers up mildred.. It was like nails on a chalkboard..

"Well.. Yes. Usually I brief them, then we sing. It went quite well today…" Miss Bat stood, walking over to her desk. "Just some small tweaking to be done.. I suppose.."

"Small? They'll need a lot more 'tweaking' to be performance ready for a mouse, let alone any people." She wrote something down on her chart.. Miss Bat seemed flustered.. Unsure how to respond. "No matter.. Hopefully Moden Chanting will prove more fruitful. Miss Cackle, are we ready." She phrased it as if it was a question.. But she wasn't really asking. It was similar to Hecates way of making it sound as if there was any free will. In a puff of smoke the pair disappeared..

The rest of the class seemed to be a downer.. No one could quite get over how fastly they had been teared down. From feeling proud of the chant right, to feeling like they'd never be good at anything again..

It left them all feeling deflated. It only made her dread the next class. Just after break, she has Potions.. She dreads to think how this whole thing would affect Hecate, At least if this mornings display was anything to go off.

Lemme know what you think!
