Chapter 43: Potions with Miss Broomhead

Mildred had rotten luck. Absolutely rotten. She never dreamed she'd get Miss Broomhead for two lessons in a row! Potions was one of her worst subjects.. She couldn't have picked a worse time to show up! Hecate didn't seem too pleased that she'd shown up either.. There was something about that look in Hecate's eye.. It was damn right murderous.. A Very stark difference to the almost panicked look she held earlier on. It almost distracted Mildred while she gathered the Ingredients needed. Once back with all of them, they began measuring them out and dropping them into the cauldron.

"Okay.. Now we.." Mildred began, her mind going back for a second before she remembered Hecate's words from the year prior "Stir it till it's soft as silk.." She took hold of her spoon, stirring it gently but with control.

After a few minutes, Hecate went for a walk around the room, eyeing every potion she passed. "Enid Nightshade.." She breathed low. "If you keep that up, there will be no potion left in the cauldron." She placed a hand over Enids, changing the way she was stirring the pot.

"Sorry Miss Hardbroom.." Was Enid's timid response.

Moments later, Mildred watched her return to her spot as if queen of the castle. Mildred looked over to Miss Broomhead.. Mildred liked to see the best in people, she did it with Hecate and it paid off. But she couldn't see even the slightest bit of Kindness in Miss Broomhead..

After around five minutes of stirring, she passed the spoon to Felicity. "Now.. Pondweed.. So it can turn.. Blue?"

"Sounds about right." Felicity commented, stirring the potion as Mildred put a handful of Pondweed in. Once it turned blue, she raised her hand.

"Yes, Mildred?" Hecate asked from her seat.

"We're done."

"Are you sure?" Hecate asked as she stood up, moving closer to the students. Mildred nodded, they'd done this potion a lot over the past few years.. "Then both of you may take a sip.- Just a sip. We don't want you flying off."

Mildred and Felicity both took a small sip.. After a moment, the pair took off from the ground, hovering in the air as if a broom. "We did it!" They yelled in unison.

"Quite.. You can levitate in silence till it wears off, After which you can fill in the class work on the matter." Hecate waved her hand, two pages of class work appeared on the desk, at the same time the cauldron disappeared.

More girls began raising their hands, completing their potions. Most went just fine.. Enid and Maud ended up taking too much and flew far higher than they should have.

"Observe.." Hecate spoke to the class. "The reason you only take a sip, and don't chug it like a maniac"

It took them five minutes before they came falling to the ground.. Around that time, Miss Broomhead took to standing, Moving over to Hecate, who'd just been wandering the classroom.

"It seems they all know their Potions.. Or at least this one. Though, when I was Potions Mistress here, My students would have been able to do that blindfolded.." Her voice only got worse the more Mildred heard it.. She couldn't help but smirk however when she saw Miss Cackle roll her eyes.

"You've changed a great deal since then, Hecate.. Hopefully for the better. There is nothing more aparling than an unruly girl.." It seemed very pointed… She eyed Hecate up and down, before looking slightly confused.. "Where's your watch?"

Mildreds hand subconsciously comes to touch the watch that she hid under her gymslip.. "Somewhere safe." Hecate responded.. Mildred sure hoped it was safe!

"Hmm.. I see. Nonetheless, We'll be off to Spell Science next… Miss Cackle" She nodded to Miss Cackle, who'd remained unusually quiet.

The Pair disappeared in a puff of smoke, allowing Hecate to let out a short lived sigh as she saw Enid raise her hand. "If it's any consolation.. I'm glad we have you and not Miss Broomhead.."

"High Praise indeed.." Hecate responded, but Mildred saw the ghost of a smile playing on her lips. They Finished off their Work, and got a chance to make one last Potion of their choice. Mildred chose to make the Shrinking Potion. Though, for that, she needed her book on hand.

Soon the lesson was dismissed for lunch.. Like with breakfast, They were all expected to Be there at the exact same time. It was a strange sensation, the school being in sink. "Oh, Mildred.." Miss Nightingale walked up to her at the end of Lunch. "You have a free Period now, right?"

"Yes.. I was going to go do some studying.." Mildred was trying to be smart about today.

"Would you mind maybe helping me out? Tomorrow I'm doing some Modern Art with the first years.. Need to get that all set up." It wasn't the first time Mildred had helped Miss Nightingale in art, In Fact she did it quite often. It was her best Subject, so she was more than happy to help. That's how she found herself, In the art room on her free period, It wasn't anything major. She mainly moved paints and set up the axels ready.. A Loud noise sounded by the door, but upon further inspection, a mop had simply fallen over..

That is until Mildred moved to the middle of the room, to find the pots of paint she'd just placed on the table to have disappeared..

"And what do we have in here..?" A Voice called from behind.. The Voice sent a shiver up Mildreds back. In a quick turn, She found Miss Broomhead had joined her in the middle of the room.. Just in time for mildreds missing paint to come crashing down upon them both..

Uhu oh..
