Chapter: 48: Hecate's Birthday Morning

A week after Miss Broomheads whirlwind visit, Hecate found herself in quite the state. Her Dreams plagued by visions she rather not relive. Her Mother in bed, dying day by day, Miss Broomheads voice as she'd scream all sorts, She saw the disappointed stare of Mrs Cackle.. She relieved in vivid horror Indigo turning to Stone.. And before her very eyes, Juile Hubble.. Turned to stone yet still moving, knocking down Mildred and Pippa as if they were made of paper.. She heard her let out a wild scream before diving at her.. That's when she woke up in a sweat.

She went to cheek her watch, only to remember it was by Mildreds Side. She felt quite confident in her choice to give it to Mildred, however, she did find herself missing it ever so slightly. It'd been on her since she was a girl, for it to no longer be on her was just strange. Hecate looked at the clock, Six O'clock on the dot. A perfect time to get up.. She chose to wear her signature Black and blue dress today with her brooch. Her eyes caught the calendar.. Like Per usual on this day, she'd continue on as usual. She'd hope that as little went wrong as possible, while ignoring the fact she was a year older..

In a moment of sentimental overtake, she poked her head in to cheek on Mildred, sprawled out on her bed. There was something so endearing about the matter. Mildreds guard was completely down, left trusting those around her in a way that just made Hecate's heart stop in admiration. In the deepest corners of her mind, away from prying eyes, kept in perfect secret, she imagined this was the feeling of being a Mother. Checking in on one's child with nothing but a caring nature. If her Birthday turns out to be a mess, at least she has this tranquil moment.

Hecate left the room, Wondering the halls of Cackles. By The time Breakfast came around, she felt it'd been an easy morning. Not many girls chose to try and argue with her, every student in the hall was accounted for, and there were no major Mishaps.

"Good Morning, HB" Dimity greeted when she sat down at the Teachers Table. "Beautiful day today, Think i'm going to take the second years for a spin round the castle later."

"Do make sure they don't crash through any windows, Miss Drill" Hecate drawed out, that'd be the last thing she needed!

"Don't worry, No windows will be endangered." Dimity smiled at her.. But Hecate Highly doubted that.

Moments later, Breakfast was served. Miss Tapioca placed before her some Pancakes, topped with runny syrup.. Not glup like she often serves. But real runny Syrup.. Hecate was immediately taken back to her childhood.. Issac cooked her pancakes in the morning on her birthday. It was his gift to her.. He'd place it down in front of her and say something cheesy like 'Pancakes? I don't think you'd be able to cook much in them, squirt.'

"Hecate?" Ada drew her from her thoughts as she looked up to her. "Are you quite alright?"

Hecate nodded. "Yes, I'm fine. Thank you.." Nothing was wrong with her, she was fine. She was simply touched by the gesture.. She looked up to Miss Tapioca wondering if she knew.. She supposed someone could have told her. But Miss Tapioca wasn't the kindest of teachers on a good day. Even with this knowledge, she couldn't help but feel she'd really outdone herself. It was a beautiful breakfast, made her five years old again, with her brother by her side.

Breakfast had put Hecate in a surprisingly good mood, The Simple Gesture alone had made her Birthday a pleasant one, almost ruling out the nasty Dream she'd had. However, knowing she had the third year first, gave her pause for the rest of the day. But to her surprise, they were rather well behaved..

All conversations were about the Potions at hand, they raised their hands before speaking, Their voices never went above a polite hushed tone. It was almost startling to have such a well behaved class.. There was almost an explosion caused by Maple Tapioca, but the girl apologised profusely and offered to Help sort out the ingredients so the bottles would be easier to read.. "That way no one else will make this mistake" She'd told her. A Kind Gesture from another Tapioca Indeed. Although Hecate had scolded her, She was impartially mad. She just hated foolish mistakes.

Break had been internally too boring for Hecate's Tastes, she'd berated only two students who were talking in the middle of the hallway, and that was it! Normally there's three runners, a couple of questionable students and lollygaggers.

Her second class, Mildreds Class, had also been on their best behaviour. They were not as focused as her previous class. But none of there conversations were overly inappropriate for the lesson, so while they continued to do there work successfully, Hecate saw no reason why she should stop them..

Mildred did however manage to break a button containing bleakroot Leaves.. "I'm so sorry, Miss Hardbroom.." Mildred said as she leaned down before stopping herself. "I-I can fix it.." For some reason, Mildred seemed far more worried than she should have done.. It was simply a bottle.. It happened, and although Hecate was still going to tell her to be more careful, it was hardly worth the worry. "Reparo the Breakio!" She yelled out, watching the glass and bottle fuse back together, leaves still inside.

"Yes well, Lets try not to break every bottle in the Laboratory, simply so we can cast spells.." She spoke with mild annoyance. After all, Mildred may be her child in many ways, but she was still a student, She would still get Berated whether she wanted to or not. That was the only Hiccup she had the whole lesson.. It was perfectly acceptable in every single way! It was practically a Miracle to Hecate…

When The Bell rang, singling them to go to lunch, her Maglet lit up. "There's been an issue by the alcove in the woods, Miss Pentangles already there, please aid her." It was from Ada. Hecate's mind ran ten to the dozen.

What kind of issue? Was Juile back? Was Pippa hurt? She wasted no time in transferring herself to the scene of the crime, seeing a smiling Pippa looking at her. "What's the issue?" She rushed out. Pippa didn't look hurt in the slightest. She was smiley and joyful, no mud or blood on her.

Pippa stood to the side, showing the Blanket layed out on the grass, a Picnic basket resting on it. "The Issue is.. It's your birthday.. And I haven't had a chance to say it yet.. Happy Birthday, My Love!"

Hecate had never celebrated her birthday past having an acknowledgment and some pancakes.. She was heading into completely unknown territory! It was ever so slightly frightening to be doing so.. But the look on Pippa's face told her that she should suck it up and get on with it. She moved over to her, sitting down on the blanket besides Pippa. The Pink Witches hand came to rest over Hecates, holding it ever so slightly.

Hecate must have looked slightly awkward for a moment before Pippa spoke. "You look like you're about to run.. I'm simply using your birthday as an excuse to spend lunch alone together.." Hecate supposed if it was good for anything, she could place any awkwardness aside, at least for Pippa.

"Very well, I'll allow it.." Hecate smirked at her. Pippa leaned in, placing a kiss on her cheek. Hecate couldn't help the red tinge coming onto her cheeks..

They ate sandwiches as they listened to the birds pass by. The last time they had a picnic together, there was a forest fire.. Hecate hated to admit how calm she felt in these moments. No worries about Cackles, about Juile, about Mildred. Just pure bliss with her and Pippa..

I enjoy birthdays, there always so much fun. For my birthday this year, im planning to buy myself some lego.

Lemme know what you thought of the chapter!
