Chapter 49! How fun. I don't actually have much to say.. HELLO! I guess...
ENJOY!
Chapter 49: Mildreds run-a-round
Mildred felt so very stressed. She'd been going from one location to another making sure everything was going smoothly all morning.. Well, She had reports of Marble Tapioca messing up, but she seemed to smooth everything over! And Sybil did manage to break a picture in the hallway, thankfully they all got it cleared away before Hecate walked past!
It made Mildred wonder if this is how Hecate felt dealing with all these rambunctious students! Mildred felt like she was about to start getting grey hair if she had to deal with one more incident!
Thankfully, the second class was her own with Hecate. They chatted politely with one another as they got on with their work. It was actually rather relaxing, Even Hecate seemed less on edge. She'd tasked them with Making a tree growing potion.. Mildred knew the Ingredients like the back of her hand.. Knotweed, bleakroot Leaves, Rarest Lichen and Blueleaf. Sir it twenty-three times in total, all to the left, or it'll churn.
She went around collecting her ingredients, but damn her and her butter hands! The Bleakroot leaves just slipped.. The glass breaking on the floor causing a right old mess. She noticed Hecate suddenly standing, about to scold her for it, she was sure. "I'm so sorry, Miss Hardbroom.." She Spoke, about to lean down before thinking better of it. Mr Rowan webb showed them a kinda wacky spell the other week for quick repairs.. She only wished she remembered it earlier with Sybill..
"I-I can fix it.." Mildred said, holding out her hands. Her voice sounded unsteady, quite honestly, she was shitting herself in fear that she'd been the one to piss Hecate off.. "Reparo the Breakio!" She yelled out, watching the glass and bottle fuse back together, leaves still inside. She leaned down now, picking up the bottle and placing it on her desk.
Hecate raised her eyebrow before speaking, sounding rather annoyed to Mildred's Ears. "Yes well, Let's try not to break every bottle in the Laboratory, simply so we can cast spells.." It earned her a look off Maud and Enid.. Mildred let out a sigh, hopefully lunch with Pippa would smooth everything over!
Mildred walked calmly out of her potions class, before legging it to Miss Cackles Office, Lunch could wait! She knocked on the door before being allowed in.
"I've just sent Hecate to Miss Pentangle.." Miss Cackle Informed her when she entered.
"Good.. Only a few small hiccups, but nothing we couldnt handle.." Mildred sighed. "Thanks, Miss Cackle. For all your help.." She had been a big help. She got Miss Tapioca to do whatever food Bee decided, She got the Cards, sorted the teachers and even allowed for anything Mildred and Pippa ordered to be sent straight to her to avoid any questions..
Miss Cackle smiled at Mildred before looking slightly sad. "Miss Cackle?"
She shook her head slightly. "Oh it's nothing, Mildred.. I'm just reminded that I'm getting old…" Mildred often joked she was the Grandma of the school, but it was because of her kind and warm nature. It was never to do with her age.. Though, she was beginning to look it ever so slightly. She seemed to be so Tired nowadays..
"Alright.." Mildred settled on, turning to leave the room.
"Oh, Mildred, Before you go…" Miss Cackle stood, moving to pick something off the table by her fireplace. "I've had a copy of it.. However, this one is from Miss Broomhead to Hecate, along with the report she gave the council, and their response.. Don't worry, it could have been much worse.." That was a relief.. After the whole paint incident, Mildred was sure the school was doomed!
"Thank you, Miss Cackle. I'll make sure it gets to her." Mildred took hold of it before Leaving. With Hecate out of the castle, The Lunch was nowhere near as nice as Breakfast. Mildred had been stuck with fish sandwiches.. Cold, Soggy fish sandwiches! It was a complete 180 from this morning's beautiful and fluffy pancakes! It was insulting, that's what it was, plain insulting. She'd have to have words with Bee about this.. Before long, she was sat in the Library with Mr Rowan-Webb. He'd wanted to talk to her about an idea he got for the trials.
"What do you know of.. Latin?" Mr Rowan-webb asked, it seemed that was the reason for his 'emergency study season'.
"It's em.." Mildred had to dig into the back of her brain.. "A Dead language.. From.. Europe..?"
He nodded and said "Well.. Yes. You're not wrong, Tadpole.." That was something at least. "But what about in reference to Witchcraft?" Mildred shrugged. "Latin is an.. Amplifier, if you will.."
"Like Bat Drool?" Mildred asked, remembering that time her hair went crazy thanks to the stuff. What a day that was..
"Exactly! Only, it's easier to control.. A Spell or chant cast in Latin, will automatically be stronger than a spell or chant done in English." He explained. "Most True witching families will have a few phrases they have been teaching through generations.. But it's not taught until you go to college"
"Why's that?" Mildred tilted her head slightly.
"It's for two reasons.. One being that younger witches are not ready for that power.. They risk getting ill.. Another reason being, it's easy to misuse, and younger witches are more likely to 'fool around'.." It made sense, the last thing they wanted was for their spells to do more damage than they already did. "A Really good witch is able to not only read Latin spells, but translate a spell into Latin to Amplify it. But that takes years of practice!"
Mildred leaned forward to ask "Do you know anyone who can do that?"
He nodded. "Miss Bat can, but she needs to sit down and study the material, translate it, chant it, and then confirm it.. I'm not sure about Miss Cackle, but I believe.. Miss Hardbroom is quite good with Latin.."
That was news to Mildred. She never knew she could speak another language, she wondered just how good quite good was.. "Why are you telling me this?" Mildred Finally asked.
"Because, Tadpole, You're up against the likes of Ethel. You'll need all the help you can get in some of these challenges.. This might just be the leg up you need." It made sense, after all Ethel had years of witches training on her side, Mildred only had her time at cackles.
"Alright.. Where do we start?" Mildred asked with a grin. This might just be the best idea they've had yet! Well, as long as it didn't backfire..
He held out a small translation book. "Now, Not everything can be translated.. So, Pick a spell, and we're going to slowly analyse and connect to latin, then go over pronouncing.. Don't pick anything too complicated.."
Mildreds mind went over all the spells she'd learned over the past few years.. "Each to her own, let the truth be shown..?" It was a simple spell, very simple.
"Very good! To Turn transformed object back to its original state! A Very useful spell.. In Latin I think it is.. Now, don't quote me.. Suus cuique mos, veritas ostensa est.." He sounded kinda funny as he said it.. "Shall we find out if I'm right?" It was a challenge Mildred was more than happy to face.
After all, she still had a while yet. She needed to cheek on everything after this lesson, but then she had to be ready for Hecate to go to the Apartment. Her Birthday was far from over yet!
Make sure to let me know what you think!
