Happy Monday! Enjoy!
Chapter 56: Trial Two - Part Two
Hecate's jaw practically dropped as she watched the first of many tasks Mildred concorde. "Was that… Latin?" Ada asked in amazement..
"Indeed it was, Miss Cackle.." Mr Rowan-webb said smugly from behind her. "We've been studying.."
"I.." Hecate was stunned. She'd never have imagined Mildred being able to do such a thing.. Let alone pull it off so spectacularly. Latin was an incredibly complex language that many witches struggled with.. It opened Hecate's eyes to the power Mildred held. She'd improved greatly over the last few years, But this was the first time Hecate truly appreciated her power. This Little witch.. Who first crashed into the pond, who couldnt get a spell right, was giving the crowd an insight into her own personal future with Magic. It was captivating..
Hecate watched Mildred step over the wall like it was nothing, running on to the next task. before the young witch was a test designed by Miss Cackle. There was a good three feet of water stretching forward. Mildred bit on her lip as she eyed up the water in front. In the lane next to her, Ethel had thrown up her hands, and summoned a broom-like creation to her, allowing her to glide over the water without a hitch.
Mildred knelt down, placing her hands to the water's surface. "Water, Water of my desire.." Mildred muttered out, moving her hands along the water in a circular motion. "Before me now, solidify!" The watcher began growing cold under her hands, fractures of ice forming.
After a moment of waiting for it to ice up, Mildred stood up, and took a few steps back. Hecate cringed as she watched mildred run at it, and slide across the ice. Beneath her feet it began to crackle and break, almost catching up to throw her into the now icy water. Thankfully, Mildred managed to make it over just in time, but not without hassle, she went face first into the grass.
"Some things never change.. I suppose.." Ada Commented with a kind smile, it was Mildred's little quirks that made her rather endearing..
Mildred was quick to get back onto her feet, running forward towards obstacle three, Flying tires hovered above. Next to the task was another note that read, "Go under, they fall, Go over they raise.. Jump on and move on."
It seemed to stump her.. Mildred spent the next Five minutes kicking dirt and starting at her feet.. This gave Hecate the time to look over at the other contestants, Ethel had moved ahead, as had Andrea. Sapphire seemed Stumped too, While Felicity.. Had decided on swimming the entire way across the last test.
Hecate's eyes went back to Mildred as the child sat down on the floor, her legs stretched out in front of her. Hecate Raises her eyebrow, watching Mildred stretch forward to place her hands over her feet. "Grant my shoes, the gift to fly, so no one may refuse, me walking through the sky!" Her shoes began glowing, in shimmering blues and silvers. Mildred slowly stood up, sighing as she took a step up, into the air, as if standing on invisible steps, leading her up to the Tires, from there, she leaped on each one, till she reached the otherside.
The Fourth Tasked seemed far easier for Mildred, a very simple spell to change to weather would make a door open before her. And it just so happened that Mildred was very good with Weather Spells, she made it thunder down on her with a wave of her hand, and a mummer of a spell. Then, the door opened.. It led her into a small courtyard before a run down building.
Hecate had truly been dreading the last obstacle for this test.. The Eye had been gifted to them by the Grand Wizard for this task, and this Task alone.. It was a beautiful red gem that sought to pull on the heart strings of every person it saw. It was said to be able to conjure a person who was in some way emotionally connected to the recipient. This could be someone from the past, someone who is lost, someone who is dead.. It could be an ancestor or someone you'd just seen.. It judges you harshly and picks someone for the best reaction..
Hecate had no idea Who Mildred may see when she walked in. Would she see her Mother? Would Juile be kind, or the harsh stone woman she'd been lately. Either way, it'd break Mildred.. Would Mildred see her? If she did happen to see Hecate, would see be.. Herself, or the more harsher version who yells and only makes Mildred feel rotten.. She'd been doing her best not to be that person.. But the eye won't care about that.
Maybe she'd see Pippa.. Or even Mirabelle Hubble.. Both are possible. She may even feast her eyes on Maud or Enid.. Ethel's also a possibility. The list was really endless.. A Whole universe of people, and she just needed the approval of this one.
Mildred read a card by the door before walking it, the door closing behind her. The Audience were not allowed to see inside that room, Now they'd just have to wait and see who comes out first.. Those Children could come out smiling and happy, or an absolute wreck..
The part Hecate dreaded was not knowing which one Mildred was going to be..She hoped that Mildred would walk out with enlightenment and clarity. Maybe some inspiration. That'd be the best outcome.
She felt a hand rest over her knee, prompting her to look over at Pippa, she wasn't looking at her, just silently staring forward at the maze and the challenges it's given each of the students involved. Pippa's hand reminded her that Mildred would be just fine, absolutely fine. She was far stronger than anyone had given her credit for..
Whats your guess for who shes going to see? (Spoiler, i doubt you'll be able to guess!)
