Chapter 59: Trial Three - Part One

Mildred woke up with a newfound ambition, after last month's Trial. It made her feel a little bad for Felicity.. But it meant Mildred was one step closer to winning, and that's all she needed! She skipped her way to breakfast, cold Porridge was just what she needed to get her blood pumping..

She had to attend her first lesson of Myths and Legends.. Unfortunately, it was morally draining.. Mildred just watched the clock.. Tick tock.. Tick Tock.. Tick tock.. And.. Ring! That was it! Finally Mildred could leg it to her seat in the Assembly hall.. However, when she entered the room she was brought to a halt.

There weren't the usual rows of seats to the stage, instead there was a square cornered off in the middle of the room. Inside the square, Against each side was one chair, all facing into the middle, in front of each hair, was a small table with a button on it..

"Hello, Mildred.." Miss Cackle walked up to her, that kind smile in place. "I'll be explaining the Trial soon, please take a seat.." She pointed to the Square.

Mildred nodded, moving to sit down on one of the seats, waiting for the other four to join them. Soon, they did, Ethel Decided to take the seat right across from Mildred.. It filled her with the kind of ambition that could only be fueled by wanting to beat someone.

"Welcome Ladies!" Miss Cackle's warm voice drew Mildreds attention away from Ethel and towards Miss Cackle. The Hall had gotten Quite Crowded, girls all huddled up before the square, as if waiting for a wrestling match to begin. "Today we will participate in a Quiz! A Question will be asked by Miss Pentangle, following it, Each girl will have the option of pressing their button.. If they get it right, they will be awarded a point by Miss Hardbroom.." At this point, Miss Cackle Guestered to the rest of the stage, stood in the middle with a podium of her own, was Miss Pentangle, and on the other side of her, a board with every participant's name.. Along with a grumpy looking Hecate.

"If the student gets the answer wrong, then a sludge bomb will be dropped on them, and another student will have the opportunity to answer… Miss Hardbroom" Miss Cackle smiled at Hecate, who took a step forward, waving her hand upwards dramatically, to allow a rain mack to materialise on each of the Participants. "Only Three Girls may move onto the Fourth Trial.. May the Third Trial Commence!" Oh gosh.. Mildred needed those points to win, but she didn't want to get sludge on her! That's the last thing she wanted!

Miss Pentangle let out a small cough. "Question One.. Who was the Inventor of the Witches broom..?"

Without thinking Mildred slammed her hand down on the button, "Eh- Edna.. Edna.." She knew it was edna.. But what odd last name did she have.. "Farthingwand!" She burst out. They'd learned about her during their Third year flying test, Miss Drill went on and on about the mistake that was the flying broom..

"Correct!" Pippa yelled, side eyeing Hecate to add a point to Mildreds name. "Question Two.. Within the witches' code, what is rule Eight?"

Ethel's hand was on the buzzer before Mildred could even think of a single rule! "There is no rule Eight, It is simply there to remind us that there's a rule for everything, even if we do not know what it is.." Ethel spoke as if reading it straight from the book..

"Correct.." That's One to One for Mildred and Ethel.. "Question Three.. In Alphabetical order.. What is the first Potions ingredient this school stocks?" What kind of question is that! Who on earth knows the potions ingredients by alphabetical order!

A Buzzer chimed. "That's be Bainberry, Miss Pentangle." Andrea spoke up, earning herself a point. Mildred had forgotten how good she was at spells..

"Correct. Question Four.. What's the spell for a weather spell?"

Sapphire buzzed in before anyone else could "Clouds are swimming, bring us that storm"

"Ooo.. That is incorrect, I'm afraid." Pippa said, as a bucket of yellow goop fell down onto poor Sapphire.

Mildred took this chance, slamming her button down. Thanks to Tabby, she knew the answer. "See the clouds as they swarm, bring us an almighty storm!"

"Correct, Mildred!" Pippa smiled at her, While Hecate gave her another point. "Question Five, When Conjuring a Fire spell, how many fireflies should you use?"

Mildred went to press her button, but she was beaten to it by Ethel. "Only One!" They both remembered when Sybill added one jar instead of one firefly.. That turned out horrific..

"Correct, Ethel! Question Six…To weld items together, what's the spell..?"

Mildred pressed the button before she got the chance to think.. "Errr.. To make a Bond.. Give me a solid weld..?"

"Ooo.. That is incorrect.." Pippa announced as the Red goop fell down onto her.. It was slimy and sticking.. It gripped her, and clung on for dear life.

Andrea slammed her hand onto her button, "Weld them strong, make it bond"

"Correct, Andrea!" Pippa nodded.. Looking down at her own cards.

Mildred looked up at the scoreboard, Two, Two, Two.. She felt pretty evenly matched, and that was only just the beginning.. All she needed was a good run of questions to get a leg up! But, as long as she wasn't the last one, there was still hope!
