Chapter 60: Trial Three - Part Two

Hecate hadn't truly known what to expect from today's trial, a quiz, including points, and disciplinary sounds delightful in theory. They'd gotten a few teachers involved to write a few cards, before they got shuffled randomly. It wasn't the most elegant way of doing it, but Ada seemed to believe it would get the job done nonetheless. That morning they'd agreed that Pippa would read out the cards. Her voice was booming and encouraging, practically heavenly to listen to. It only seemed fair that she reed out the cards. Meanwhile, Hecate would mind her own business keeping a tally of who won what.

She was surprised to see Mildred getting two points so fast, she was neck and neck with Andrea and Ethel, a perfect place to be. Hecate didn't know what side she stood on right now. On one hand, She'd never imagined Mildred even getting this far. If she didn't come in last place, Hecate would be happy. She didn't have high hopes. But on the other hand, Mildred had shown that she had great power within her, she was capable of so much! It made Hecate only want the best for Mildred, and for her to go far in this challenge, and in life.

She couldn't help but grimace everytime the gloop fell down on someone.. It was a mess she just knew she would have to clean up later..

"Question, Seven.." Pippa announced, holding her cards as if some TV presenter. "In the School Charter, What is rule One-Hundred?"

A Look of recognition crossed over Mildreds face before she pressed the button. "All school rules must be kept at all times, except when they need to be broken.." Of course that'd be the one rule she knew!

"Correct!" Pippa sounded out. "Question Eight.. What's the name of the School's Founder?"

Ethel pressed the button fast and demandingly. "Christobelle Cackle" She answered without hesitation.

"Very good. Question Nine, What is the spell to turn someone into a Pig?"

Once more, Mildreds hands were on the buzzer. "One and all will be agog when you see before you a hog.." Mildred probably remembered from that time she turned Ethel into a Pig. It may not be an overly great memory, Hecate imagined she'd felt Mildred had some satisfaction with it.

"Yes! Question Ten.. What is something that negatively affects a broomstick?" Pippa asked with a grin.

Ethel, in an attempt to level the playing field with Mildred, quickly pressed the button. "Eh.. Crickets.."

"That is Incorrect.." Pippa announced as the Purple goop fell down onto Ethel. She let out a squeal, scowling at Mildred as if she'd personally done it.

Sapphire pressed her button. "Water, Miss Pentangle."

"Correct, Sapphire!" Pippa smiled at her student, Glad she's now gotten at least one Point. "Question Eleven..In the School Charter, What is rule twenty-one?"

Andrea Pressed the button after a moment. "Girls Must not ride their broomsticks indoors.." She seemed unsure, hesitant, but she got it right nonetheless. All Pentangle students were given the school Charter at the start of the school year.

"Yes! Question Twelve.. Name One Magical Amplifier."

Mildreds Hand was back to the Button. "Bat Drool!" There were tons of Amplifiers that she could have picked from, that just happens to be the one she had experience with..

"Very good, Mildred!" Pippa announced. She was two ahead of Ethel and Andrea now.. That had to have stung Ethel. "Question Thirteen..What are the three ingredients in a Cat Transformation Potion?"

Andrea was back at the buzzer again. She was very gifted at Potions.. "Phoenix Feather, Bat Wool, and Starfish."

"Correct! Very well done.."

Hecate looked over to the tally, the numbers going up.. Mildred was outshinning some of the best students in the school. It was honestly daunting to think of it.. Mildred was by no means the worst witch in the school anymore, but to think she may actually be one of the better witches? That was just frightening..

Truthfully.. The whole ordeal brought Hecate back to her childhood. She recalled carrying a silver tray, shined so faithfully, now holding up a small plate of sandwiches and a cup of milky tea. She often brought it up to her mother, who'd be found sitting up in bed, staring out the window for hours on end, practically paralysed in place.. It meant her food often went unwanted, and her tea went cold. But in her final hours, at least she got to look out the window at the sunset. On this day, the night before Hecate returned to Cackles for her second year, Her Mother actually turned to look at her.

'Joy, Darling.. Don't settle for anything less than your best next year..' She'd said it while giving her a rare smile. 'You'll make me proud.. I know it..'

She could be so harsh, so unfeeling, so controlling.. Yet in their last meeting, she'd filled her with so much hope, wonder and brightness. It occurred to Hecate, that maybe her mother knew it was her time to go.. Knew they would never meet again, at least, not in this lifetime.

She'd often wondered if her Mother would like Mildred.. But seeing this Young witch, not settling for anything less than her best.. Mildred knew it would garner even her Mothers Approval. This young makeshift Hardbroom was going to do them all proud one day..
