Chapter 61: Trial Three - Part Three

Mildred grimaced as she looked up at the scoreboard, she just needed to be quick about it.. Andrea was catching up.. She was also the only one not to get slimed yet.

"Question Fourteen.." Pippa continued. "What is the spell to turn a Wizard into a mouse?" There's a spell for that? Mildred thought as Sapphire pressed her button.

"Sting of bee, egg of grouse, turn this wizard into a mouse.."

"Correct, Sapphire!" Pippa nodded, holding up her cards to read the next one. She'd purposely been holding her cards so her new ring was on show.. It had not slipped Mildreds attention. "Only Five more questions to go.. Question Fifteen. What is the name of Felicity foxglove's cat?"

What an odd question to Mildred.. She supposed it was because Felicity was the witch out last round.. Unfortunately, it wasn't a question Mildred knew the answer to.. But ethel sure did. She'd slammed her hand down on that button. "Pocus!"

"Correct! Question Sixteen.. What was the name of the first Cat to be a witches Familier?" Pippa asked the contestants.

Sapphire slammed her hand on her buzzer. "Firestarter..?"

"That is incorrect.." The Yellow goop came crashing down on her once more. Mildred was anything but envious..

Andrea pressed her buzzer next. "Ember."

"Correct!" That put Andrea and Mildred on the same score.. It was worrying to say the least. It wasn't that Mildred Needed to Win, It's that she'd like to win.. "Question Seventeen.. In the Chant Nature's Beauty what is the third line?"

Sapphire once again pressed her buzzer, most likely hoping to gain some ground. " All the birds of the forest in the dawn with the chorus"

"Correct! Question Eighteen.. When was Cackles Founded?"

Ethel was on it once more. "1604!"

"Correct, Ethel! Now.. the last question.. The deciding factor.." Mildred, Ethel and Andrea were all on equal standards. Mildred wanted to win, but she'd be happy if even Andrea took it! She had no idea what would happen if Sapphire did though, that'd make it a four way tie.. "What is Miss Cackle's Mother's Name?"

Ethel and Mildred both pressed their buttons, however, Ethel was slightly faster, her button lighting up. "Em.. Amelia Cackle.." She'd butchered it. Mildred knew she had!

"That is incorrect.." Pippa announced in a sorry tone, that purple goop once again falling onto Ethel. "Mildred?"

In a confident Voice, She announced "Alma Cackle." After all, they'd meet her.. It's what struck her so much!

"Correct! Mildred is the winner with Six Points! And Unfortunately we will be saying goodbye to Sapphire with the losing points of Four.."

Mildred smiled wide, looking around as various students cheered for her, she even looked over to hecate who was clapping politely along with the other teachers, but even so, Mildred spotted that ghost of a smile on her.

"It's rigged!" Ethel yelled out in anger, the celebrations coming to an abrupt ending as everyone looked to her. "No way would trouble Hubble be able to actually win at a game where knowledge is the key! She's the worst witch in the school!" She ranted on her face red with anger.

"Ethel.. Maybe we should talk about this in my office." Miss Cackle spoke softly, as if to a deer about to run.

"What? So you can silence me?" Ethel looked at Miss Cackle before scoffing. "Not a chance! She's only won because she's found an in with the teachers.. Is this really the type of student we want to be rewarding? She shouldn't be allowed to run with her connections.."

Once she finished Miss Cackle approached her more. "Then by all accounts.. You shouldn't be allowed to run either, Ethel.." Ethel looked stunned at that. "Because you have an 'In' With the School board.. And by that logic.. I too, should never have been head girl.."

"I-I didn't mean it like that, Miss Cackle.." Ethel tried to backtrack.

"Oh but you did.. You insinuated that the teachers were giving her an unfair advantage because of her home life.. And yes, sometimes there are Pros to that life. However, You will not find that in these trials.." Miss Cackle placed a hand on Ethel's soggy shoulder. "We had over Twenty-Five cards submitted by the Staff of this school.. At least two per teacher that I counted.." She looked to the deputy heads who nodded in response. "They were then shuffled by random, and nineteen were brought out.."

"B-But she won!" Ethel attempted to continue.

Miss Cackle removed her hand from Ethel. "Indeed, Luck was on her side, not foul play, Ethel.." She shook her head slowly. "Honestly Ethel.. I sometimes just don't know what to do with you.. For your unreasonable outburst, I think a week's detention is in order.."

Miss Cackle sighed as she walked out, followed by various students and teachers left to go about their day, But Ethel looked straight back at Mildred. "This is all your fault Mildred Hubble.."

She half felt like correcting her on her use of the word Hubble.. However, instead, she chose to bite back about something else. "My fault? Look around Ethel, No ones forcing you to be like this! I didn't make you have an outburst, or insinuate the teachers are cheats, and i didnt make you insult Miss Cackle!" She pointed a slimy red finger at Ethel. "You did that, not me!"

Ethel's face only grew redder. "All my problems started the moment I met you!"

"But half the time it's because of your own actions! You're just looking for someone else to blame!" Mildred yelled back, her confidence growing with every word. Winning did a whole lot for her self confidence.. "You played a nasty trick on Tabby and Mightnight the first week here, You got caught, Not my fault.. You switched yours and Mauds Tablets around, in the end you got told off by HB for wasting her time and sleep.. Not my fault, Ethel!"

Mildred was vaguely aware that HB was indeed watching from the side lines, she caught a glimpse of black and pink standing together out of the side of her eye. "I turned you into a pig by accident, but you turned me into a frog on purpose.. And then blamed me that I was a frog!" Mildred continued on. "You've cursed my broom, Faked a wart, Got Agatha to take over the school along with getting your sister turned into a Trophy! And that was just in the first year, Ethel!"

By now, Mildreds face was bright red. All the anger and unresolved issues coming to life. "Don't even get me started on how you destroyed the school's founding stone, or even how your mom got Miss Cackle removed from the school.."

She let out a deep sigh. "Sure, I'm not perfect.. I set off a rogue witch.. But at least I can admit when I'm at fault.. Stop blaming me for you being a terrible person.." Mildred shook her head, practically running out the room..

She needed air.. She needed to process what she'd just done.. No way was Ethel okay with that! She may very well choose to sabotage Mildreds whole Trial! There's only two more left.. Only two more.. That's all Mildred had to get through.. Then it was the exams, and summer! God, Mildred couldn't wait for summer..

She'd decided to lock herself in her room, sliding down by the door. She couldn't help but feel she'd put a target on her back.. She didn't want that.. Hecate was deffently going to yell at her for her outburst.. she could feel it. Oh, Why did she have to open her big mouth!
