Chapter 65: Trial Four - Part Three
Mildreds Blood ran cold as the bell rang, without thinking she tapped her broom sending them both forward, at a speed that should have toppled them over. But Mildred remained steadfast. The morning had thankfully brought her spirit back up. There was something calming about the teachers lounge. The Smell of freshly brewed coffee, the endless flow of tea, the biscuits Miss Bat kept sliding her way.. Never mind how quiet it was. The only noise was of distant chatter, idle conversations and the making of drinks. It was perfect for Mildred as she drew to keep her mind at bay.
There was also something interesting about watching the teachers in their natural habitat. It was easy to forget that they were Human too.. Seeing them chatting, drinking and eating in perfect comfort made her feel more connected with them, and the school before her. That's why she needed to become Head girl, not just to prove that she's not the worst witch. But also to make sure every student feels that connection to Miss Cackles..
That was the thought that moved her forward. She looked to her side, seeing Ethel and Andrea neck and neck with her. She looked to the ground, the grass of cackles, bright and lively, every strand visible as the wind blew against it. It was a beautiful contrast to the sky, blue, steady, endless.. Paired with the out of place red dot of Miss Spellbinder.
But it didn't last like that, Soon, The Trio were entering the twisted woods. The Dark unforgivable forest Swallowed them whole. It was suddenly a game of dodgeball with the trees. Mildred hugged her broom, grateful Tabby was here, or he'd been thrown off by now. She barely ducked under a low hanging branch before swerving to miss another tree. She was suddenly seeing her life flash before her very eyes, she only wished she'd gotten more sleep.. She soared out the tree line, seeing ethel slightly before her, but Andrea was slightly behind her. That was a plus. Only two could win this one.
She pointed her broom down, her braids flapping behind her as she tried to avoid crashing into the ground. In an effetless move, she glided on top of the river that ran besides Cackles. The water was so clear, she could see the fish keeping up with her below.. That is until the water turned Mucky, the fish disappeared, and a foul smell took over the air. "The Sewer Bridge.." She muttered, her eyes focusing on the long bridge she'd have to go under. It was the epitome of gross.. Who knows what was dripping from that roof.. Nothing good, that's for sure.
She went in, the only light she could see was from where she came from.. It was pitch black.. "I hope you're not scared of the dark!" Yelled Ethel as she cackled, actually cackled. The Yell startled the sleeping bats. Suddenly, Mildred found herself not only trying to find the exit, but also trying not to hit the annoyed bats. She gritted her teeth, pushing forward.. She could see it, the light at the end of the tunnel, literally. She let out a long breath as the fresh air hit her, the light assaulting her eyes after a few minutes in pure darkness. She looked around once more, following the path of the river. She could see Miss Drill not too far away, and Hecate was practically right above her. Somewhere in the tunnel, Andrea had taken over her.
"Impossible hairpin bend.." Mildred reminded herself of the last obstricale before it was back to cackles. She narrowed her eyes as they came up to the bend.. You'd have to practically throw your broom around to make it.. Mildreds eyes widened as she watched Andrea catch the side of the large rock they had to manoeuvre around. Her broom broke, sending a screaming Andrea towards the rocky waters below.
Mildred didn't think, she held out her hand, the other clinging to her Broom. "Plenum protege, totum protege, Meis protege viribus!" She screamed, a Blue ball formed around Andrea, halting her in the air.. Mildred slowed down as Hecate swooped in, grabbing Andrea from the ball. She held the young girl onto the broom as she looked at the now halted Mildred. She looked positively startled by Mildreds use of spell.. Truthfully, Mildred was just thankful she didn't explode..
"Carry on, Mildred. I've got her." Hecate told her with a small nod. That's what the teachers were here for after all.
"Thanks, Millie! You got this!" Andrea cheered, smiling at her savour.
Mildred smiled shyly before moving on, the sudden stop ment she could move around the bend with ease.. Because she was now in second place, it didn't really matter how fast she went. She didn't want to count Andrea out, but it seemed she'd already given Mildred Her blessing. She flew her way back to Cackles, smiling at her cheerful friends jumping up and down at the sight of Mildred making it back in one piece. She touched down besides Ethel, who looked far too smug for her own good. A Moment later, Hecate had placed Andrea on the ground so she could join the other two.
"It seems, Ethel and Mildred will be going through to the Final Trial!" Miss Cackle yelled out, her hands clasping together in a mixture of Proudness and cheerfulness. "The next trial will take place next month, where we will find out who will be our next Head girl.."
Mildred ran off to join her friends, the task now complete. She could help but notice Hecate staring at her with a strange emotion written over her face. It dawned on Mildred.. It was Concern mixed with shock and worry.. With an undertone of interest. It made Mildreds Heart beat harshly against her rib cage.. What was Hecate thinking..?
