Ch. 4: Duel Monsters on D-Wheels
"I'm Bill Weasley, and I'm sure you all remember Fleur Delacour. We'll be teaching this class together. I'm going to wait exactly one minute in case there are any stragglers."
Sure enough, a few other students came running up.
"We're not too late are we?" Dean asked.
"If we are, it's Dean's fault," Seamus said.
"Right on time, actually," Bill replied.
Right behind them, someone brought their own D-Wheel.
"Susan? You're taking this class?"
"Hey, Hannah. Yeah, my aunt gave me her D-Wheel. I want to learn to ride it."
Bill continued, "I'm sure you've all seen one of these before. This is a D-Wheel, the D meaning duel, sometimes called a Duel Runner. It's a special motorcycle with a built in PC for you to program in your deck. No worrying about your cards flying away because now they're digital. Before we start with the duels, we of course need to start by simply driving. Once you master that, we can move on to multi-tasking."
Fleur brought her D-Wheel forward.
"That's a nice D-Wheel, Susan. The Academy has a few spare D-Wheels on hand. Did anyone else here bring their own? I realize they're not cheap, but once you have your own, you can personalize it any way you like."
"'Scuse me, Bill," came a familiar voice.
"Afternoon, Hagrid. Where'd you get the D-Wheel?"
Hagrid was bringing a red and black D-Wheel that Harry spent a lot of time with in the summer.
"Matter 'o fact, this belonged to Sirius Black. It's been inspected just to be safe. This 'ere motorcycle now belongs to Harry Potter. I'm just droppin' it off. Here ye go, Harry."
"Thanks a lot, Hagrid."
Harry was happy to see that D-Wheel again. Ron was happy for Harry, but at the same time...
"How am I ever going to afford a D-Wheel?" Ron thought, "I can't keep using some cheap Academy model. Still, I can't back out now just because I don't actually have some tricked out motorcycle. I'll just have to save money somehow."
Draco had walked off for a minute, but then came back with a shiny black D-Wheel.
"Where did you get that, Malfoy?" asked Harry.
"You wouldn't believe me if I told you, but I will anyway. I got it from Severus Snape."
"He bought you a D-Wheel? No, wait, looking at it now, it looks about as old as mine. You mean to tell me that Snape actually used this thing?"
"He's just full of surprises, Potter."
"I knew Draco would have one," Ron kept thinking, "Even if he hadn't been given one, he can easily buy one."
"Excuse me," said a gentle voice.
Ron turned around to see Cho Chang.
"Cho? I didn't think you'd be interested in this."
"I actually took a class for it in the summer. Cedric would always go on about how exhilarating it was. It's actually very calming for me. Listen, Ronald, I know we really don't know each other that well, but I know that you're not exactly made of money."
She went around the corner, and when she came back around, she had a D-Wheel that most everyone was very familiar with.
"Cho, isn't that Cedric's D-Wheel?" Ron asked.
"Yes it is. I went to his parents to ask about it. I wanted to donate it to the Academy or something. They said Cedric would definitely approve. However, it would be a waste to leave it on display in a garage or something. Cedric loved this D-Wheel, and the best way to honor that would be to give it to someone who'll treat it with respect. I want you to have it."
"ME?! Are you sure? I barely knew the guy."
"You need a D-Wheel. Cedric was a very kind person. I already have my own D-Wheel. You'll be sure to maintain this, won't you?"
"Well, yeah, of course!"
"Then please accept it. If you want to make any changes to it, I know Cedric would say that you have to make it feel like your own."
She pushed it over to Ron.
"I don't know what to say. I mean, apart from thank you."
"Do your best, Ronald, and never give up."
Bill looked over at Fleur, She had a sad smile on her face. No doubt she was thinking of Cedric. He then looked over at Harry, who was now busy looking at his D-Wheel's machinery.
"Now where was I?" Bill continued, "Oh, yes. I know some of you here might not have had your birthday yet, but rest assured, if you pass this class, you're certified to drive your D-Wheel anytime and anywhere. Just remember, even if it is a specialized motorcycle, it's still a motorcycle. Which means you have to maintain it and obey traffic laws like you would with any other vehicle."
Bill proceeded to go over the basics of a motorcycle. That was just the first lesson. Bill and Fleur assured the students attending the class that their D-Wheels would be perfectly safe in the Academy garage.
"This is now officially my favorite class," Harry said.
"I still can't believe you changed your mind at the last minute, Ron," Hermione said.
"Once I've passed and I'm letting you ride in back, you'll thank me."
"Oh no, I am not getting on that thing. I don't care if I have a helmet. I don't care how cool you think it makes you look. If you somehow got me on that thing, I'd spend the entire time with my eyes closed and my arms wrapped around your torso..."
She seemed to be lost in thought.
"Mione?"
"I think you'd better let her finish her daydream, Ron," Ginny joked.
The next few weeks continued on as usual. One thing that was unusual was that Umbridge was rarely seen.
"No doubt she's in her office plotting some evil scheme," Hermione said.
The class with Lockhart was basically free time. Without Umbridge hovering over him, he let the students do whatever while he talked of his exploits. The other classes were the same as always: chemistry - Snape, biology - Sprout, algebra - Flitwick, English - McGonagall, history - Burbage, PE - Hooch, theater - Trelawney, and so on. This year, however, D-Wheel practice was definitely Harry's favorite. They went over everything: maintenance, normal riding, performance riding, and programming your deck into the system. They were even allowed to give their D-Wheel a new coat of paint.
Draco thought back to when Snape gave him his D-Wheel.
*FLASHBACK*
Draco received a text rom Snape to meet him outside. He found him next to an impressive black D-Wheel.
"I understand you're taking the D-Wheel class, Draco. Don't waste your time and money buying a new one. I'm not going to be using this any time soon. You may as well have it."
"You mean to say this was yours?"
"I feels like ages ago, but yes."
"It still looks new."
"That tends to happen when you take care of something."
"I don't know what to say."
"Don't bother saying anything. I'm also giving you advice. I know you love your family's Blue-Eyes cards, but you don't have the best track record with them."
"I just need to tweak the deck and research my opponent more."
"Regardless, you should branch out."
"I started using the a Red Daemon's Dragon deck like you said."
"Yes, and it's served you well, but times change. Look at what Potter did at the tournament. You need more recent monsters. I obtained these for you, but the rest you'll have to get on your own."
Snape handed him three cards
"I...thank you...sir. You know, you're more of a father to me than my actual father."
"He and I were old friends, but really it's your mother that asks me to watch out for you. Mostly though, I want you to turn out better than I did."
"What do you mean?"
"Another day perhaps. Make sure you pass."
*END FLASHBACK*
Since then, Draco had been to the shop to obtain all the cards he would need for his new strategy. Now for the opportunity to show them what he was made of.
"You've all progressed very well. I think it's about time for the moment I'm sure you've all been waiting for. This time we'll be conducting a riding duel. Some of the students who've already passed this class have volunteered to test you. Plus that way there's enough competitors. All your names have been entered into an app on Fleur's tablet. It'll draw them at random to see who'll duel whom."
Fleur held the tablet in front of her...

Marcus Belby was quite tall and thin, which was funny considering he ate almost as much as Ron. They were revving up their D-Wheels.
"Ready to go, Marcus?"
"Ready when you are, Seamus."

"I detach one Xyz Material to special summon one Salamangrate monster from my deck in defense position. I choose Salamangrate Foxy."

A pillar of fire shot the king back into the extra deck.
"When my Heatlio is Link summoned, I can target a card in your Spell/Trap zone and shuffle it back into your deck. Resounding Roar!"
A flame tornado blew Marcus' set card back into his deck.
"Thanks to my Salamangrate Sanctuary, I can Link summon a monster using only a copy of itself as Link material. Surging flame, awaken Heatlio's true strength with the power of purification! Reincarnation Link Summon! Resurrect, the king of beasts that runs through the fire prairie! Salamangreat Heatlio!"
In a flash of light, Heatlio was still standing, but now the flames that made up his mane and covered his body were bigger and stronger. He let loose a mighty roar.
"Since I Link summoned this turn, I can special summon Salamangrate Mole from my hand to a zone my Link monster points to."

"If I control a Salamangrate Link monster while Jack Jaguar is in my graveyard, I can target one other Salamangrate monster in my graveyard and shuffle it into my deck. If I do that, I special summon Jack Jaguar to a zone my Salamangrate Link points to. Come on back!"
The jaguar was now running alongside the D-Wheel.
"I think it's about time to attack. Jack Jaguar, attack directly!"

The lion became a fire tornado as he struck the opposing D-Wheel.

I shuffle three banished monsters back into my deck and draw one card. I play another Quick-Play Spell, Armed Dragon Flash. I special summon one Level 3 Armed Dragon monster from my deck in defense position. Here comes Armed Dragon Thunder Level 3."

The enormous dragon charged its fist with electricity and swung its mighty fist.
"I activate my Trap, Salamangrate Rage! I activate its second effect. I target one Salamangrate Link monster that was summoned using a copy of itself as material, and then I can destroy cards you control up to that monster's Link Rating. Heatlio is Link 3, so your dragon and your Field Spell are gone."
Fire enveloped the playing field as the village and the dragon were consumed.
Marcus was stunned, "I end my turn."
"Heatlio, finish him off. Heat Soul!"
The fire on the lion's back propelled him forward and he struck the opposing D-Wheel with his large claws.

Marcus' D-Wheel began to slow down, so he pulled off to the side and shut it down.
Bill commented, "Every D-Wheel automatically slows down like that when you lose a duel. Be thankful it doesn't shut it down completely like they used to. Anyway, that was an excellent duel."
"Hey, Seamus," Dean said, "You didn't tell me you changed your deck."
"Oh yeah, uh, surprise. Thanks for the duel, Marcus."
"I hope we can have a rematch some day."
"Okay, " Bill said, "On to the next match up."
"Ready for this, Dean?"
"Let's do this, Katie."

He aimed his turbines at the scepter and blew it away.

"Oh yeah, and I could teach you a thing or two."

"Like how amazing I am. I'm also handsome."

She rolled her eyes, "Look, I don't mean to be rude, but I have a boyfriend already."

A large, noisy, three-wheeled D-Wheel zoomed onto the track.
"Let's get this duel started!" McLaggen shouted.
"Be careful, Ron," Bill said, "I don't trust this prat."
"We will pay extra attention to this match," Fleur added.
"Time to teach this berk a lesson," Ron said, as he revved up his D-Wheel.
He soon caught up to McLaggen, and that's when he saw it. His two back wheels had spikes on them.
"These don't scare you, do they?" McLaggen taunted.

The monstrous zombie dragon shot a fireball at Ron's monster.
"I activate my Trap, Magic-Arm Shield. When you attack, I target one other face-up monster you control. I take control of it, and now it's the attack target. Speed King Skull Flame, come over here and take the hit."
The mechanical arms extended over and grabbed the zombie centaur. It was then struck by the fireball.

McLaggen's eye twitched.
"Power Tool Braver Dragon, attack his monster!"
The giant drill began to spin, and Power Tool used it to destroy the undead dragon.

"Thanks to Aircrack Storm, my Power Tool can make a second attack. Attack him directly, Power Tool!"
This time, the dragon snapped at McLaggen with its excavator hand.

"What do you think about that, loser?!"

"That's right, you don't know what to think! I end my turn! Try and get past this!"
Ron was confused, "Okay...Power Tool Braver Dragon, end this. Attack his monster!"
Power Tool's drill pierced through the monstrous dragon and struck McLaggen's D-Wheel.

Hermione leapt up and cheered. However, as McLaggen's D-Wheel started to slow down, he maneuvered his back wheels in Ron's direction. Ron had to slow down and swerve to avoid the spikes. They both soon came to a stop. Hermione ran over to Ron, with Harry and Ginny close behind.
"Ron, are you okay?" Hermione asked.
"Yeah, I just had to act fast to avoid those things."
"You were magnificent," she whispered into his ear.
He started blushing, while she then walked over to McLaggen. He took of his helmet and gave her a smarmy smile.
"Come to comfort me, my comely lass?"
She promptly kicked him in the shin.
"OW! Did you see what she did?"
Bill walked up and grabbed him by the shirt, "Yeah, I did. I can't say I blame her. In case you didn't know, those wheel spikes are illegal. You could've injured my little brother."
Now McLaggen looked scared, but Bill simply shoved him away. Fleur, however, was right behind McLaggen, and held out her foot so he tripped and fell flat on his back. Bill composed himself and went over to Ron.
"Sure you're okay?"
"Yeah, thanks for looking out for me."
"That's what family does, Ron," he said, ruffling his brother's hair.
"Time for your speech, Bill," Fleur said.
He nodded and cleared his throat, "Bravo, everyone! Those were all excellent duels. You've all passed the class. I can't wait to see your future riding duels."
Someone clapping was walking up to the field. It was Umbridge, with Lockhart close behind.
"Yes, congratulations to all students," she said in a voice rife with sarcasm, "However, now that this extracurricular class is officially over, I must share some news. For the sake of safety and order, no riding duels may be conducted on the premises without my express permission. In fact, any organizations taking place on Academy grounds must first be reviewed by me before they may take place. I trust there are no objections?"
No one said anything, but several people had dirty looks on their faces.
Harry spoke up, "What does Principal Dumbledore have to say about that?"
"Dumbledore has nothing to say on the matter. This is all in the name of safety and order. If he was to object, it would only make him sound more foolish that he already does. Speaking of which, a special announcement is about to take place in the main auditorium. Every student is required to be there."
She marched back the way she came.
Harry sighed, "Leave it to her to ruin a good day."
