Chapter 69: Ready for a party?
Mildred hadn't been able to wipe the grin off her face since Miss Cackle Had called her name..
"Mildred"
It still echoed in her ears. So did the squeal of an absolutely furious Ethel Hallow. Along with the roars of her friends as they cheered for her. She'd later asked Hecate just how many votes there were.. Sixty-Eight Votes out of One-Hundred and Twelve. It was a little over half the school.. Well, It was Twelve votes more than half the school..
Back in the Apartment, Hecate had given her an actual Hug and said: "Seventy Six Percent of Votes.. Well done, Mildred." Well done.. It was really all Mildred wanted. She had a feeling Hecate would be proud of her either way, but boy was it nice to hear. She had good feelings about the next year.
Before she could even get to that, She had the end of year party, and assembly to get through. She threw the covers off her and moved to leave her room. She noticed Hecate and Pippa's room door slightly open, the candle light on in the early morning.
"If we're getting a Cottage.. A Lot of the Manors Furniture could be used.." She heard Pippa speak, prompting Mildred to stop just outside the door.
"I.. Am actually considering selling it." Hecate Admitted, her voice sounding slightly strained.
"Hiccp, are you sure?" It was very rare Mildred heard Pippa call her that, It was sweet, but it was reserved for -their- moments. "It's been in your family for generations.."
Hecate hummed. "It was never meant to be mine. I just happen to be the last one standing. I hardly Doubt Mildred will want to take over the House. It's not.. Her."
"Of course not, She's bright colours.. The Manor is akin to that of a Haunted House." Pippa Bit out.
"It's my past.. But it has no place in this future." Hecate settled on. Mildred could see shadows passing by the gap in the door.
"You'll need to have a full clear out." Pippa mentioned with a sigh.
"Indeed, Sort what can be kept, what can be sold.. So on." Hecate sounded out. "It'll be a lengthy job."
"Maybe.. We could take Mildred there this Summer." It sounded as if Hecate was about to retort when Pippa continued. "She'll get to see your childhood home, at least once. The place you grew up. While we also sort through it.. By the time we return to cackles, all the preparation should be done."
Mildred took the chance to push open the door. "I'd like that." She chimed in, the two women, already dressed for the day, turned to look at her.
"What have we said about eavesdropping, Mildred.." Hecate said with a sigh.
"Your door was open." Mildred stated plainly.. It was after all.. Sure she didn't need to linger, but she won't mention that.
"So it's settled!" Pippa spoke, clasping her hands together, and giving Hecate the smuggest smile. "This summer, we will go to the Hardbroom House.."
"Perhaps Mildred should be told.. Why." Hecate gave Pippa a pointed look.
"Well, Millie.." Pippa turned to the young girl. "The School will be expanding to allow for the addition of Pentangles students.. It's all a bit cramped right now. This will include new Teacher cottages on the school grounds.."
"And, We'll be getting one? So.. A House instead of four small rooms?" Mildreds smile only grew in size.
"Yes!" Pippa seemed just as excited. "Two floors.. Three Bedrooms.. A Big bathroom, a small one.. Kitchen, Living room.. Am I missing something?" She turned to Hecate.
"A Study." Hecate informed her.
"Oh right! A Study too.." She nodded excitedly.
"Will My friends be able to come round? What about my room, can I decorate it? Can I still live there even after I leave cackles? Can we get a dog?" Mildred had a Million questions flying around her head.
Pippa looked to Hecate for her response. "Sometimes. Yes. Yes. No." Hecate fired off, Leaving no room for arguing. "Get dressed, Mildred. You'll be late to Breakfast."
Mildred nodded, that smile still present on her face. She walked back to her room before changing into her uniform, and went off to Breakfast. In preparation for tonight, packages had been coming in left right and centre! She had no idea what she was going to wear, Maybe just her outfit from last year..
"Ethels took over the room with all her stuff.." Enid complained over breakfast.. "It's gone from the tower, to Fort Hallow.."
"I dread getting ready later.." Maud commented over a slice of toast. "I think she's invited Drusilla to get ready in our room too.."
"You two could always come to my room." Mildred shugged. She knew Pippa wouldn't mind, and Hecate probably wouldn't be about till later..
"Are you thinking what I'm thinking?" Enid got that silly little grin on her face, the one that means she got a brilliant idea.. "Makeover party before the party!"
It didn't take long for them to agree on a plan. Mildred spent some time with her friends, wandering the grounds, chatting about their summer plans, discussing the party to come. Mildred went on a tangent talking about last year's party and what to expect.. Eventually they parted ways, agreeing to meet up again in Half an hour at the door to the teachers apartment.
"Hello, Millie." Pippa greeted as Mildred walked in, she looked up from a pile of paperwork that'd clearly gotten neglected.
"Hey, Pippa. Em.." Mildred started coming to stand before the table. "I've invited Enid and Maud to get ready here.."
Pippa smiled brightly at her. "Oh, That's Brilliant Millie!" She looked at her paperwork then back to Mildred. "I'll remove myself from the living room, so you can use this room."
"Are you sure?" Mildred asked, it was very kind of her. The Livingroom was much bigger than Mildreds Bedroom.
"Of course! I'll just relocate to the Bedroom." She began tidying up her Paperwork while Mildred made her way to her room. Upon opening the door, she noticed a large white box on her bed.
Upon opening it, she found the most beautiful Pale yellow dress. A High neckline. Puff Sleeves. Looking at it, it should come to about her knees in a flowy fashion. Around the waist was a beautiful satin sash with a Silver broom brooch on it. It was simple, it was stunning, it was a little different from her last dress, but she didn't mind starting a collection. She felt a hand across it when a knock against the door made her jump back, as if she'd been playing with fire. Pippa popped her head in with a smile. "What do you think?"
"It's beautiful.." Mildred Practically whispered. "Thank you."
Pippa walked in, holding another, much smaller box. If Mildred was correct, it was a shoe box. "Oh, Don't thank me alone. It's a Joint gift.. I picked the colours." She held out the box to Mildred. "These, however, are from me and me alone."
Mildred took hold of the box, and placed it down next to her on the bed, and removed the top. Inside was a pair of White Kitten heels, with a little Yellow satin sash that wrapped around the heel, and the ankle. Alongside it, was a Silver bejewelled hair clip. It brought the Outfit together beautifully. She moved to wrap her arms around Pippa in a warm hug. "Thank you so much!" The Outfit was going to look Amazing! Mildred remembered the year before, The Silver Bracelet Hecate had given her would go nicely with this one too, along with her Watch.
Pippa chuckled, hugging Mildred tight. "It's to say well done for Head girl. I knew you could do it, Millie." When Mildred often thought of her parental figure, she thought of Hecate. But, Pippa was right there alongside her. She knew that, and she appreciated it.
"Hello?" A Voice came from the main door, pulling the two away from one another. "There are Three lost students here to see Mildred.. I hope you don't mind me letting them in.."
Pippa moved away towards the main door. "Not at all, Mr Rowan-Webb. Please do come in, Girls."
Mildred moved out the room to see Maud, Enid and Felicity. "I hope you don't mind me crashing, Mildred.." the latter spoke out, side eyeing Pippa with shyness. "Ethel's took over the room.."
Mildred also looked at Pippa who chuckled at the girls. "The more the merrier!" She smiled at them all, welcoming them into her home as if it was just another visit. Enid and Maud had been here before, but Felicity hadnt. And none of them had lingered in the Living room for more than a minute before heading for Mildreds room, so this was a change. "I'll be in the bedroom, should there be any issues.." She moved to enter her and Hecate's room, leaving the four alone with the silence.
"So.. This is a teacher's home.." Felicity commented.
"Apartment." Mildred corrected with a smirk. She didn't mind Felicity, they got along well. "Pippa said we could use the Living room, as it's much bigger.."
The girls squealed as they went about making themselves at home, getting out the makeup and hair supplies and dousing the table in them. One thing was for sure, Hecate would not be happy. Oh well..
So, In Moving forward, chapter 20, i said "I had this urge to put Mildred in a Pastel yellow dress. Because A) I think it would suit her. B) When not in school uniform, they seemed to like putting her in sunset colours. (reds, oranges, yellows). But I couldn't for the life of me, justify Hecate putting her in something so bright.." When talking about the last End of year party.
I had not forgotten that urg.. I may not be able to Justify Hecate putting her in Yellow, but i can Pippa!
