Chapter 70: The End of Year Party
Hecate had transferred directly into her room sometime in the late Afternoon, only to be told by Pippa that her Apartment had been invaded by Fifteen year olds with a problem controlling the volume of their voices. The only consolation to this was knowing that Mildred loved the dress. She'd grumbled before going about getting ready herself. She didn't really like the idea of Cackles having an end of year Party, it felt like breaking down the walls between the students and teachers. They should forever view her as a force to be reckoned with. Not some glammed up lady. But, it did Make Pippa so very happy.
"Oh.. Hecateā¦" The Way Pippa spoke broke her heart. There was something soft and sorrowful about it, Prompting Hecate to look back at her. She was of course already dressed for the occasion. She was dressed in what could only be described as Orchid Pink, With a sweetheart neckline and arms covered in Lace. She held onto her Maglet. "Mr Shadowbloom.. My Old Deputy.. He's just told me there's been sightings of ice creeping in and around Pentangles.."
That could only mean one thing. The Founding stone has been used there.. Running out of power, and removing the magic from Pentangles. There was no hope for its return now. "The Founding stone." Hecate said, standing up and flicking her long curled hair behind her. This is why she didn't wear it down often.. Although it may be pretty, and although she may have pinned it out of her face, it still managed to get in her way.
"They've used it.. I only wish I knew what on... Oh, Hiccup, nothing about this is comforting!" Her voice practically wailed. Hecate briefly looked to the door, The Laughing and loud voice of the girls covering Pippa's Outburst. Hecate moved forward, taking hold of Pippa's hand in a soft grasp. "I just wish this whole ideal was over with.. My mind just keeps reeling with possibilit-" She was cut off by a Small knock at the door. Hecate pulled away as if she had been burned. Had the girls heard Pippa?
"It's Mildred. May I come in?" The Young voice chimed through, Prompting Hecate to strive forward and open the door, only slightly to allow her in before shutting it once more. Mildred Looked at Pippa first. "You look beautiful, Pippa." Before she turned to Hecate, pausing for a moment. "Wow.."
She took in Hecate's outfit, Despite the stern expression Hecate was sure she was wearing. She was originally going to wear the same dress as the year before.. But Pippa simply wouldn't let her. So, Instead she'd gone with a Charcoal Black Dress, Hanging loosely to her waist with what could only be described as the Queen Anne neckline, paired with Bishop Sleeves. The dress perfectly covered her shoes in a draping manner. She felt somewhat uncomfortable, however she was grateful for the lack of Sparkles. "You look beautiful too, Hecate."
It almost took Hecate by Surprise, Beautiful was never something she'd use to describe herself. Pippa might, but not her. "Thank you, Mildred." She took her chance to look over Mildred Then. Although yellow wasn't her choice in colour, it made Mildred's eyes practically Sparkle. "You look lovely yourself."
Mildred gave them a twirl, showing off its fit and her hair. Half up in a Plaited bun, the rest curled. It reminded Hecate of a mixture of her own hair styles. "Your hair is just wonderful!" Pippa gushed. "Who did it?"
Mildred smiled widely. "Felicity did it!" The Joy in her voice felt infectious, bringing the smallest Smile to Hecate's lips. As Mildred waved her arms in pure joy, the sight of the empty Charm bracelet caught her eye. She'd given it her last year, but done nothing with it.. Till now.
Hecate moved over to the dressing table, picking up a small Box from it. "Mildred." The young witch looked over to her, her eyes suddenly full of curiosity. Hecate held out the Box, Allowing her to take it. "Well done.. On Head girl." Hecate said for the second time.
Mildred smiled once more, opening the Gift with a strikingly slow pace. Inside the box, shone a Silver broom, Perfectly matching the brooch on the shash, only this time meant for her bracelet. Took hold of it, "Can you.. Help me put it on?" She asked Hecate. With a wave of her wrist, the Charm moved to attach itself to the bracelet. "Thank you, So much!" Hecate found herself tangled with Mildred in a warm hug. Somehow, the gesture was becoming more and more common, and she felt herself welcoming it. Mildred pulled away after a moment, "Thank you both!" She then moved to give Pippa a hug, receiving the same enthusiasm.
"You're most Welcome, Millie. Forever and always." Pippa booped her nose fondly. "Now off with you, before you're late." Mildred nodded, casting another grin around the room at the two before she exited. "She's growing so much.." Pippa gushed, moving forward to place a kiss on Hecate's cheek.
Before she could, However, Hecate placed a hand up to stop her. "Don't you 'll leave a mark, and look smug about it all night" She said it very matter of fact.. She knew Pippa, and knew her ploy. Even when Pippa pulled the face of mock surprise and insult, placing a hand on her heart.
"Hecate Hardbroom.. I would never.." Her voice was mocking, and ever so slightly higher pitched. It only lasted for a moment before she began chuckling. "Shall we?" Pippa held out her hand. It was one of the few invites to transport her that Hecate received.
Together they materialised right outside the party, The Noise vibrating across the floorboards. They released their hands, moving inside. Unlike Pentangles, Cackles was never made for Parties. But, They managed to do their best. Streamers covered the room, Balloons flew to the ceiling and Miss Bat was playing DJ.
From the corner of her eye she could see Mildred already Assaulting the cupcake stand with her friends, each one looking giddy with delight. No one could blame them. It was startling how well the Pentangles students now merged with the Cackles students.
A ghost of a hand touched Hecate's arm, prompting her to look to her side, Seeing a very Purple Ada standing beside her. "Hecate, You look lovely."
"Thank you, Ada. As do you." It may have been true, or it may have been politeness. It was sometimes hard to tell with Hecate.
She received an equally as Polite Smile in return. "I'm about to open the ball with a speech.. Wish me luck." Ada gave a reassuring wink . She needed no luck, She could say a Speech in her sleep if she wanted.
Miss Cackle stood up on the Stage, Waving at Miss Bat to quiet down the music. "Ladies and Gentlemen.. Welcome to Cackle's first end of year party!" All the students were now fixed on Miss Cackle. "It was a Pentangles tradition that has now been merged into our own! One I am only so glad to undertake." She paused for a moment, letting her words soak into the atmosphere. "Now, Please don't let me keep you-" Before she could finish, she went flying back, as the doors to the room flew open.
Hecate's hand acted before she could truly take in what happened. She transferred herself to Ada's side, holding her up so they could both look upon their attackers. Stood in the doorway was no one other than Agatha.. Standing side by side with Miss Gullett, Delilah, Miss Mole and more frighteningly.. Julie Hubble.
Agatha smiled, that overly sickly sweet smile that screamed trouble.
"Guess who!"
