I wake up some time later by the damn insistant beeping of the damn machine I've been connected to.
Before I am fully awake I am startled into consciousness by the loud arguing outside the door. For a second I panic thinking it is that asshole, Jacob, but I quickly realized that I never truly added him as an emergency contact, even though he kept insisting that I do.
I guess I don't need to now.
Things have a way of working out, I guess.
This being said, the only left two l other people. Masen and my older brother, Dale.
Anthony Masen. I knew it was him or the only other person who still cares about me. My older brother, Emmett Swan aka Dale McCarthy.
I'm sitting on the bed, in the dark trying to calm my sudden racing pulse, when the door is flung open, and the lights are suddenly flicked on.
The now illuminated room becomes too bright, too suddenly, causing me to flinch and pull the blankets over my head as I gasp and groan at the sudden illumination.
"Miss. Swan?" The doctor calls, slowly walking into the room.
"Yes?" I ask, from under the blankets.
"Is there a reason why you are hiding under the blankets?" He asks, amused.
'Does my being in pain amuse you, asshole?' I think, annoyed as I flinch at any new noise.
"The light is hurting my eyes… it makes my headache worse." I reply, from under the comfort of my warm blankets.
I heard the click and sigh in relief as the lights flick off, before the blankets are pulled off of my head.
"I am sorry, but I do have to check on how you are feeling." He says, apologetically, flicking on a small lamps hung on either side of the bed.
He quickly pulls out a penlight and flashes it on and off at my eyes, making me wince each time he does it.
"How are you feeling?" He asks as he writes something down on the shiny metal clipboard.
Like I ran into a wall head first with no helmet on.
"I've been in worse shape," I tell him honestly.
His familiar face makes me search my already clouded mind for him. From where do I know him?
Why is does he look so familiar?
"Hm… are you feeling tired?" He asks as he turns to look at an x-ray.
I begin to shake my head as I let out a yawn, "Excuse me, I'm so sorry for interrupting but I can't help it feel that I've seen you before...have we met before?" I ask, sleepily.
I watch him, unblinkingly as he looked away feeling uncomfortable. When he realized I wasn't going to drop the subject he rolled his eyes before turning to look at me.
He sighed, "I'm Carlisle. Jasper's older brother." He says, as he turned to return my stare, before giving me a small smile.
"Wait, how is that possible? I heard your last name was Colon? Cellen? Carmen?" I list trying to remember his last name but my head was too fuzzy.
"It's Cullen… and there is a reason for that… I ,however, can't even begin to explain, so I'll let Jasper explain that to you at another time. He and Masen are waiting outside. Do you wish to see them?" He asks as he completes his check-up.
I grumble in response, debating from r a moment whether or not to allow them in before nodding for him to let them in.
"They'll be in shortly." He says before turning to leave the room.
"Yeah. Alright." I grumble.
I truly hope the decision to see them doesn't come back to bite me in my already bruised ass, but I know it will especially, since I can almost anticipate their reactions.
I try not to stress about this, and allow my mind to wander soon after, soon falling back to sleep.
It is after I suddenly hear the creaking of the door opening and various pairs of footsteps that I realize I have been startled awake once more. Though, this time I chose to keep my aching eyes closed.
"Just what exactly did she ask you, Carlisle?" I hear Jasper ask.
"She asked me why I looked so familiar. So, I told her the truth. Well, part of the truth. Don't look at me like that. Look at the situation we are in, because of your hardheadedness." Carlisle replied, firmly.
"She will be fine." My brother said.
"No, look at how fine she is, Emmett, for fuck sakes!" Jasper groaned.
"Both of you need to keep your voices down, need I remind you of where we are, and just who can be listening to us. Also, I noticed that earlier when she arrived that her stress levels are high, much too high for my liking and by you being here, you're making it worse. So, please stop acting like this." Carlisle orders them.
"I may know why, but we do have to keep it quiet." I hear my brother say.
"What happened, Emmett?" I hear Jasper ask.
Damn it, why are they all here?
"I spoke to Felix last night. It seems she was there when they went to pick up the Hunters and Broduers…" I heard my brother respond.
"Oh, fuck…" Jasper mumbled.
My pulse began to quicken suddenly as I realised what they were speaking about.
This confirmed my suspension, fucking hell, I hated being right.
"Bella, you can open your eyes, we know you're awake." My brother says, amused.
I sighed in response, before slowly peeling my eyelids back, before sitting up to look at them.
"Bells, what did you see?" He asks me, as he walks over to the chair next to the bed and plops down.
Jasper looked at me concerned like he dreaded what was about to happen next.
"What do you mean?" I ask, evasively.
"Perhaps… we should wait to see what is going to happen before questioning her." Carlisle suggested, as his eyes flicker over to where the heart monitor.
"Why do I have this thing on if I was brought in for a concussion?" I ask, with an indignant frown.
"Your blood pressure was a bit elevated when you came in. I wanted to monitor you for a bit." He explained.
Of course, it's elevated. Yours would be too if you had seen what I had just seen the night before.
Also, being related to Emmett had its own category of stress.
"Emmett…" I whispered, my voice cracking.
"It's Dale, B. Just until we get out of here." He says, reaching towards me in a comforting gesture.
I shake my head, willing my tears to go away as I stare at his stiff posture.
I sigh, swallowing thickly as I wonder what happened. What caused my brother and I to drift apart, we were close once upon a time, now he even changed his name and won't allow me to call him by his God given name.
I could understand wanting to move out of the town where mom and dad were brutally murdered, but he practically abandoned me when we arrived here, so why was he even here?
"Twenty more minutes. Then she'll be able to be discharged." Carlisle says.
"Sorellina, che cosa hai visto?" Em asked. (Baby sis, what did you see?)
I let a slow calming breath before answering, "Ho visto questi uomini prendere i miei vicini ieri sera." I whispered, looking away from them. (I saw these men take my neighbors last night.)
From the corner of my eye, I saw all three men exchange a look before turning back to me.
"What happened?" Someone suddenly asked, causing me to jump.
I feel my neck snap painfully in the direction of the shutting door, gasping in surprise as I realize who finally made an appearance.
