Happy jolted awake at the shrill ring of his burner on the night stand.
"Ignore it," Lexi whined as she snuggled deeper into the covers trying to recreate the lost heat as he moved from the bed.
"You know I can't," he said softly, kissing her head as he grabbed his phone. Seeing the caller ID, he knew he was safe to answer in front of her. "What's up Koz?"
"Ya decent?"
"Never," he replied as he chuckled to himself as he answered. Kozik created the code when he figured out about Happy's secret. Happy had been with the beauty in his bed just shy of a year. About 4 months back, Kozik had caught them in the act while on a visit to Tacoma.
After some persuasion, Lexi had convinced Kozik not to mention it to any other brothers. He agreed, but only if there was a code mentioned when she was around. This way, he was less likely to let club business slip to the girl.
" We need ya in Charming Brotha..."
"When?" Happy watched as Lexi rose from the bed in a huff and went into the bathroom. He'd have to fix that later, she knew the club came first.
"Clay says first thing in the morning. Club goes on lockdown by 6."
"I'll be there."
"One more thing, ya gotta bring the girl. Gem's all in a hissy. Says the princess ain't safe if she's not home with what's going down. Jax is gonna call her and break the news."
"Fuck...that's gonna go over like a ton of bricks."
"Sorry brotha, I'm just the messenger."
"Yeah, I know. See ya soon," Happy replied. Seeing her phone light up with her brother's name, he knew it was time to face the music. Grabbing her phone and walking towards the bathroom, he could hear the shower running.
"Babe, it's Jax "
"Not really in the mood for dealing with him," she replied as he opened the door. Seeing her sitting on the counter with her head in her hands, he knew this wasn't going to go well.
"You need to talk to him."
"Don't you tell me what I have to do Lowman! I just rearranged my entire schedule so I could have the week with you and what happens? My fucking father and brother drag you away first chance they get."
He knew she'd be upset. Hell, he was upset. The last 2 months, he'd been on the road more than home. He had busted his ass to get home to his girl tonight to have this week with her. But she knew the life. She knew what he did before they even started this. Happy took a step closer as she refused to make eye contact.
"Lex-" He was cut off by her phone ringing again. Fuck they were persistent. What the hell was happening in Charming? he thought to himself.
"The fuck do you want Jackson?" She growled into the phone snatching it form Happy.
"You're coming home. Your escort will be at your place at 8."
"Excuse me?" she asked back raising an eyebrow at Happy.
"You heard me. Clay's orders. Pack light, you're coming down on his bike. He hates cages."
"Do I even have a say?"
"Nope. But Lex?"
"What?"
"Don't fight him. Hap's got a bit of a temper if provoked."
"Fine," she stated simply as she hung up the call. "Did you know?" she asked looking to Happy for any answers. He didn't usually keep her out of the loop like this.
"No. It's why Kozik just called. Told me shit was going down. I was needed and club's going on lockdown. I guess Gem pitched a fit and wants you home." He watched her as her nose scrunched up and she chewed on her lip trying to process the situation. "Look baby, I know you wanted time together, and it's not exactly what I promised, but atleast this way, I'll have you close. It's a 10 hour drive, we get that alone. Maybe we can even stop and see Ma on our way back. She misses you."
"Yeah in 4 hours," she spat back turning away from him. She didn't mean for her anger to be directed at him. It was the situation. For months, she'd barely seen him. Now when she was to have him all alone for the week they instead were being drug to Charming where she wouldn't even be able to touch him. Seeing him start to leave the bathroom, her resolve broke. She knew it wasn't his fault. He was just being loyal, as always. "I miss your Ma, too."
He turned back towards her leaning against the door jamb. He watched the contemplation in her actions as her face fell to the floor and she played with the bottom of his shirt she was wearing. "I'll let her know we will come see her."
"Sorry I yelled. I just know how hard it's going to be being that close to you without being able to actually touch or kiss you without prying eyes," she whispered as she continued to look towards the floor.
"Hey," he said, slowly walking towards her and lifting her head up by her chin so she was facing him. "Don't ever be sorry for your feelings. I know what we're doing. Do you think it will be any easier for me? I hate when I can't have you wrapped in my arms. But I knew what was entailed when we started this relationship. When you're ready, we will tell them and I will face the judgement of the Redwood. Until then, I'll take whatever I can get with you. Let's get some rest while we can. Don't want you falling off my bike with our precious cargo," he stated reaching in and turning off the water of the forgotten shower.
She nodded her head and let him guide her back to bed. As he slid in behind her, he wrapped one arm under her head and across her chest while the other lay across the small bump forming on her abdomen rubbing slow circles with his fingers slowly lulling her back to sleep. He knew they wouldn't be able to keep the secret much longer. Especially once they were in Charming. But he'd face that day when it came. He promised her, all in her own time and he was determined to keep the promise.
