Lexi could hear distant beeping and occasionally talking but could never form full sentences from the words. A few of the voices sounded familiar but she wasn't able to open her eyes to see before she would drift back into the black. Finally after fighting for what seemed like forever she was able to open her eyes.
She was in a bright white room with IVs and wires sticking out of both her arms. She could see bandages and bruises covering her arms. On the couch across the room sat Happy looking out the window. He looked to be wearing the same thing he'd been in when she left the house. Lexi tried opening her mouth to speak but no words came out. It felt like there was something going down her throat as well. Suddenly the door opened and in walked her mother with two coffees in hand.
"Lexi! She's awake!" Gemma shouted pulling Happy from his daze. "I'm going to find a nurse!"
Happy was by Lexi's side in seconds. His hands holding her face while they made eye contact. His eyes pleading for acceptance that she gave him. When Lexi started trying to talk again, he shook his head.
"Don't talk. You got rear ended and thrown into the barrier on the interstate. You've been in a coma for almost a week. Talking can mess up your throat since the doctors had to intubate you."
Lexi's eyes got huge with realization then she instantly looked towards her stomach. With all the blankets laying across her she couldn't see if her bump was still there. Not to mention her whole body felt numb so she couldn't feel the twins either but Happy caught her drift.
"The doctor said they're okay. They do checks on them every time the nurses check your vitals." He told her answering her silent question. "Baby I'm so sorry. I never should have blown up on you like I did that night. I don't want you or the kids to leave and I'll do anything to make it right. These last few days have been hell having to see you like this. I know I fucked up but I'm going to fix it."
Gemma reentered the room with the nurses in tow. Happy was immediately pushed to the side so they could start checking on Lexi and taking vitals. He tried to keep eye contact as best he could while they were checking her out. Lexi was having a hard time trying to keep the instructions straight as the nurses and doctor shot them off at her. It felt like she wasn't even finishing one task before another was asked to be performed. It didn't help her head felt really heavy and she was still pretty dizzy.
"Let's get her intubation tube out, and get an MRI ordered. I want to see if the brain swelling has gone down now that she's awake. I also want an ultrasound tech back in to check on the pregnancy," the doctor said as Happy joined Lexi's side again.
Lexi looked towards Happy in desperation with all the commotion going on. She'd never done well with hospitals and clearly this wasn't going to be an easy battle either.
"I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere," he told her squeezing her hand for added comfort.
The next couple hours passed in a blur. The nurses came back and removed her intubation tube and as warned her throat felt like it was on fire. They recommended she limit her talking and provided her with a notebook and pen to communicate. She was then instantly sent off to her MRI and from there she was sent to get an ultrasound done. Happy stayed right by her side through everything.
The ultrasound was what set her mind at ease. Being able to see her boys floating peacefully cuddling together she felt the tears well up in her eyes. Leaving like she did during that storm could have been one of the worst decisions she'd ever made in her life. Luckily the twins seemed fine and other then a few cuts, bruises, and a sprained wrist she seemed to be fine. She was informed she had a possible concussion but it was hard to tell for sure while she had been in the coma. Now that she was awake and the results were back from the MRI, they could tell there was definitely a concussion but her brain swelling had reduced some. Lexi was visited after all of her tests and informed due to her injuries and pregnancy they wanted to keep her for at least a week.
When the doctor's felt better about her prognosis, they told her she could be allowed visitors in her room. She knew her parents and brother were in Tacoma but had no idea that so many of the other SAMCRO members had come as well. A few SAMTAC members had even made appearances to check in on her. Finally at around 9 the nurses cut off visitors and Lexi was left with just Happy.
He had been glued to her side all day. Refusing to be separated unless absolutely necessary by medical staff and making sure to jump at any of Lexi's needs. As she looked at him now, she could see the exhaustion in his body but knew he was hiding it for her benefit.
"Hap?"
"Yeah babe?"
"You can get some rest ya know. I promise I'm not going anywhere."
"I'm fine," he told her.
"Will you hold me so I can then?" She asked, knowing if he could feel her relax, his body may do the same and relax enough he could get some sleep.
"If that's what you want," he answered. He'd been very careful in his replies to Lexi since she woke up. He didn't want to set her off after almost losing her.
Climbing out of her bed, she grabbed her IV stand and walked over to the recliner he was sitting in before crawling into his lap. He spread a blanket over her so she wouldn't get cold and let her curl in to make herself comfortable before lightly wrapping his arms around her. She seemed so tiny and fragile even with being 7 months pregnant.
"Babe..." she whispered.
"Yeah Lex?"
"I'm really sorry I left. I know we were fighting and I'd been acting childish for weeks but I need you to know I never intended to keep you from the kids."
"I know you didn't. I fucked up too. I never should have said what I did. If I would have just kept my trap shut you never would have left that night. I never should have let it go as far as it did. I was just tired of seeing you miserable."
"But going to Charming wouldn't have fixed that," she told him tears starting to fall. "Yes Jax and I are close again. Hell, Mom and I are even on decent speaking terms but I wasn't happy there. That's why I left all those years ago. I'm happy with you. Even if I hadn't been showing it. I miss us. How simple it was before the club was involved. When we didn't have rules to follow or have an image for you to uphold."
"I miss that too," he said holding her tighter. He could feel the tears prickling his own eyes as he continued, "I know it may not seem that way but I couldn't care less about that shit if it meant I had to lose you. I need you Lex. Until you came along and wiggled your way into my life I'd only ever loved and worried about Ma or the club. You changed that and I don't want to go back to not having you."
"No worries. I don't plan on going anywhere," She replied getting comfortable again to sleep, suddenly exhausted herself. "Get some sleep."
"I'll try."
Both Lexi had Happy fell into a deep sleep until Happy woke to feeling something warm and wet on his leg.
"Did you seriously just piss on me?" He grumbled still half asleep.
"No! Why would I pee...Fuck Hap, it's blood!" Lexi shouted starting to freak out.
Happy's eyes shot open and he looked down at their laps where Lexi had just removed the blanket from. She had blood covering her hospital gown and his pants were also soaked. It wasn't that he had a problem with blood, it was whose blood it was and that he didn't know what was happening. He lifted Lexi to lay her back on the bed while hitting the call button. A nurse entered the room and instantly jumped into action trying to calm Lexi.
"Is it the twins? Are they okay? I was just trying to sleep what's going on?"
"Calm down Miss Morrow. We will get it all figured out. Let me hook up this fetal monitor and we will get you cleaned up." After the getting the monitor hooked up she called out to the others, "Get a doctor in here!"
"What's going on?" Happy shouted starting to worry.
"I'm getting bad readings from the twins. We're going to need to get you to clear the room sir."
"No I'm not leaving her."
"You have no choice. Clear the room or I call security and you will be escorted off the premises. You choose."
"Happy, don't get kicked out. I'll need you. Some of the guys will be in the waiting room I'm sure. Go out with them. I love you."
"I love you too Sweets," he told her slowly backing from the room on her orders.
Making his way out to the waiting room he was glad to only see Jax, Kozik, and Bec. He knew he didn't have it in him to keep up his normal facade and if it was going to break in front of anyone he'd rather it be them.
"What's going on brotha?" Jax asked seeing Happy come around the corner.
"I don't know. They kicked me out of the room. Something's off with the boys. Lex was sleeping then we woke up to her bleeding everywhere," He mumbled looking to her blood on his hands.
"Fuck. They won't say anything?" Kozik asked.
"No. Just wanted me out. Lexi told me to come out here so they wouldn't call security."
"Let's get you cleaned up and then we will figure out what's going on," Bec suggested. "Koz, can you get their bag of clothes from my car?"
"Yeah I'll be back," Kozik said kissing her head before walking away, Jax going with him so he could call his mother and step father with the update.
"What if she loses the kids? Fuck...Why wouldn't they just let me stay?"
"I don't know Hap, but we will get this figured out okay?" Bec tried soothing him as she guided him to the family restroom in the corner. "Start with washing your hands and we will get new clothes when Koz gets back."
Happy was still scrubbing the blood off his hands when the men got back. Changing his clothes he cleaned more blood that had soaked through his pants from his legs and rolled the clothes up in a trash bag. before throwing them back in his bag. As Happy rejoined the group, his future in-laws were just arriving.
"What's going on?" Gemma asked freaking out. "She was fine when we left."
"She was fine before she went to sleep, we woke up to both of us covered in blood and the nurse couldn't get a good read on the twins. They called for a doc and kicked me from the room about 30 minutes ago."
"Well don't they have any new news?"
"Not that they've told us Ma. Calm down before they kick us all out."
"No! That's my daughter and grandbabies, I'm going to get answers!" She told the group turning to face a nurse.
"I'm guessing you're the family of Alexis Morrow?"
"Yes that's us," Happy said jumping from his seat. "Please tell me she's okay!"
"She will be soon. There was a separation of her placenta from her uterine wall, which isn't uncommon after a car accident. The doctor is currently preforming an emergency cesarean to birth the twins--"
"No they'll be too early! I need to be in there with her," Happy said cutting her off.
"I'm sorry sir but you can't. It's against protocol. With it being an emergency no one is allowed in the room with her. The doctor is about half way through the surgery and you will be able to meet the children within the hour as long as there are no issues."
"Fuck!" He yelled and punched the wall.
"Sir if you can't get yourself under control I'll need to ask you to leave the premises."
"He will be fine, we've got him," Clay told her. "Please let us know when my daughter is safely out of surgery and he will be able to see her and the kids."
"I'll trust you this time but one more outburst and he's gone," She informed them walking away.
Happy sunk to the floor with his head on his knees.
"It's gonna be okay Hap. They're all fighters," Jax said.
"I failed her. I swore to her she wasn't going to do this alone and now she is."
"Just stay positive. Those babies are going to need you once they're out." Gemma told him while she paced. She'd never done well being told no.
After what seemed like a lifetime, a doctor approached them in the waiting room. "Mr. Lowman?"
"Yeah, doc?"
"Lexi made it through her surgery well and is now in recovery on her way back to her room. The twins are both on the small side but healthy all the same. I've had a nurse get their measurements and get them cleaned up to meet you back in the room as well. You're welcome to head that way now if you like."
"Thank you," Happy told him rushing back to the room.
"Can we go too?" Gemma asked him.
"Lexi will still be groggy from the sedation meds so I would like for her to rest, but given circumstances, I will allow you back to meet the boys if Happy is okay with that."
"Let's go," Gemma said going towards Lexi's room dragging Clay with her.
"Go meet your nephews," Kozik told Jax. "Bec n I are going to go get some rest and will bring back stuff for the kids once we get up."
"Sounds good. Thanks brotha. You too, Bec."
Upon entering Lexi's room, Happy saw her being transferred back into her bed as a few other nurses were bringing in things to care for the twins. Over in the corner, a nurse stood over two portable cribs that Happy assumed contained his children. He walked slowly across the room, drawn to them as if the hustle around him didn't even exist. Looking over the edge he saw the perfection he and Lexi had created. Both boys looked like spitting images of their father. Only difference being one had his mother's striking blue eyes while his brother had Happy's brown.
"Would you like to hold them?" The nurse asked.
"Can I?"
"Of course!" She answered with a giggle, "They are your children."
Happy sat in the recliner as the nurse lay both boys in his arms and adjusted their heads. It wasn't long before Lexi's family came in and was fawning over them as well. Happy had never seen Clay show much emotion, yet he let the tears flow freely as Gemma placed one of the twins in his arms. The family shared the happy moments for about an hour before the nurses kicked the visitors out so the twins could rest. Happy couldn't help but just stare at his boys as they slept. After the crazy week of not knowing if Lexi was going to make it she now slept soundly along with the children who were a perfect mixture of the couple. His life was perfect and he wasn't going to let anything ruin it.
