Virizon carried Dylan, Mina, Zack, and Rose on his back, while Keldeo carried Rex and Luke, who were semi-conscious but physically paralyzed after the recent battle. Both Sword's Pokemon ran at high speed towards the place they knew as Paradise. Upon arrival, the chosen kids were impressed.
It wasn't for nothing that it had that name. In the first place, those types of fields that are listed as 'the best home gardens' in the human world, fell short of half of such green fields, extensive and full of life and delicious aroma of freedom. Second, the sun was shining so beautifully in that place that it seemed like a dream compared to the disasters that had happened outside.
Thirdly, several Pokemon worked on different tasks: there was Patrat bringing seeds and cultivating them in orchards that were separated by signs among which one could read some like 'Grove of Aranja', 'Grove of Meloc', 'Grove Safre', etc. Elsewhere, a pair of Gurdurr and Timburr were seen carrying logs to where they were going to build a new house with a well. On the other hand, a rather curious group of Pokemon was seen playing: Azurill, Marill and Azumarill, implying that it must be a family.
But the most remarkable thing was a stone statue in the center of that town. In it, two Pokemon were represented that were high-fiving their hands happily. The first was a female Pikachu (since the heart shape was noticeable on her tail) and the second was an Oshawott. However, they didn't have time to pay more attention to certain details, because Virizón yelled at two Pokemon in front of her, in a store. One of them was a Swanna and the other…
"Audino!" Virizon said.
Both Pokemon noticed her presence.
"Virizon!" Audino replied, "I see you found Keldeo. But what about…?
"Audino," Keldeo begged, lowering Rex and Luke off his back, "Both of them were hit by a Dragon Breath. They need attention"
Audino immediately became alert and asked them to take them to the back room, where there were a couple of straw beds on which they could be placed. While Audino and Virizon were examining Rex and Luke, Keldeo asked the guys in the shop:
"Then, how can you evolve and return to the base state?"
"Well...it's hard to explain..." Rose said.
"Because they are Chosen children" Swanna mentioned to everyone's surprise.
"Chosen Children?" Keldeo asked impressed, "You mean…legend humans who transform into Pokemon?"
"How do you know, Miss Swanna?" Mina asked, confused.
"Because, unlike Keldeo, who came to Paradise a few months ago…" Swanna narrated, "I have lived here since its founding. And I have seen the sparkle in the eyes and the positive aura that those chosen children bring"
"You mean there was a Chosen Child here?" Zach asked.
"That's how it is. He's the one with Pikachu there."
Swanna pointed back to the stone statue, more precisely to that Oshawott who was happy next to Pikachu. Zack and the others felt a little overshadowed because it was the first time they had seen a monument to a chosen child. At that instant, Virizon and Audino came out of the back room.
"There's bad news," Audino explained, "His friends of his are quite affected by that attack and the Zreza berries don't work. Although… if we combine them with Healing Seeds, it is possible that they will improve"
"But the Healing Seeds won't sprout for another week," Swanna commented, "I spoke to the grove's manager, Leavanny, and she told me that…"
"What can we do?" Dylan asked, worried that by then the condition of his best friends would worsen.
"I know! We will speed up the production process with the Heavenly Water!" Keldeo suggested, "Do you remember, Virizon? Cobalion mentioned it a while back when I was practicing to be a Sword Pokemon."
"The water that works better than fertilizer and makes the wiltedest plant flourish…" Virizon recalled, "I know, but that water gushes from a spring in the Dark Cave. Several Pokemon have been lost there due to that brutal darkness"
"We can go find her!" Dylan mentioned, eager to help, "Right, guys?"
"Yeah…!" Mina and Rose shouted determinedly.
"Um..." Zack muttered.
"Zack, what's wrong?" Rose asked.
"It's just... I don't like the idea of searching in such a dark place"
"Are you afraid of the Dark?" asked Mina, "But… in the Lapis Lazuli Mine you were fine"
"It wasn't that dark and we had Rex to brighten the place up a bit more. But now…"
Rose approached him and, with her vine, shook him.
"We need you, this is not the time for you to be afraid too" she told him, "Remember? Rex was also afraid, but he managed to overcome that fear."
Zack seemed to doubt it, so he said almost muttering: "Okay..."
"Though… the Dark Cave is a bit far away," Virizon commented, "We'd better ask the brothers for help…"
The Poke-Destined wondered who these brothers were, so they followed Virizon and Keldeo towards the town's central square. For a moment, Keldeo was looking for those brothers until they found a rather rare pair: an Espeon and an Umbreon.
"Wait! Umbreon!" Virizon warned them, "We need your help!"
"Virizon!" the Espeon replied cheerfully, "I thought you and Keldeo were on an expedition."
"We will gladly help you, what do you need?"
"A Magno-Portal," Keldeo replied, "Heading into the Dark Cave…"
They needed at least a few more minutes to explain what had happened. When they finished, Umbreon clarified something:
"As I understand it, but the Dark Cave is home to a very bad-tempered Pokemon that doesn't like to be entered into its territory. He is a Toxicroak with a very bad character "
"Oh really? Well, then, I'll go help you" Keldeo preposed to the chosen children, "Do you agree?"
"Keldeo, are you sure?" Virizon asked.
"You are the one who has the most confidence in me, Virizon. Please, you know that the first thing Cobalion says is that we should help our friends."
"Fine… you can go with them. Ah, take these"
Virizon gave them small rocks that were covered in a moss that gave off glitter.
"They are luminescent mosses" explained the Pokemon, "They will give them some light, but it won't be enough"
"We'll manage, thank you very much Virizon" Rose told him, "And also thanks for joining us, Keldeo"
"It's nothing" he replied, somewhat blushing.
"Well then... we'll need this..." Espeon continued, bringing a strange object with his telekinetic powers.
It was a purple tablet with a smaller black square inside. Within it, there was a golden circle within which was another even smaller square. This in turn was divided into four sections: two that represented the sun and another two that represented the moon.
"Espeon ready?" Umbreon asked to his sister.
"Of course, Umbreon" she replied.
They both closed their eyes and used their powers (which caused them to be surrounded by a brilliant blue aura) concentrating them on that tablet (which began to glow an intense crimson red). After a few seconds, the red glow spread in a radius of 1 meter and two rings of the same color appeared on the ground, surrounding the source. Finally, the tablet became the base of a spiral of energy that was fired from the object.
"Now!" Umbreon yelled, "The Great Portal is open!"
"Jump into the light!" Espeon stated, "We'll reopen the portal when you want to get out!"
Keldeo, Dylan, Mina, Rose and Zack then jumped into the beam of light. Instantly, everything turned around him, as if in a whirlpool (however, it was not as sudden as what happened at the beginning of his adventure). When it was over, they all stepped out of the beam of light and onto solid ground.
They were now on top of a mountain, with a considerable amount of oxygen. In front of them, was the entrance to a dark and gloomy cave.
"Does anyone else think it's too dark a cave?" Zack asked (if he didn't have the fur of a Shinx, it would reflect paleness).
"Calm down" Keldeo soothed him, "As long as we stay together, there won't be any problems"
"Keldeo are right, Zack" Mina told him, "Don't be a chicken"
Reluctantly, Zack had to enter closing the line and each one took out their luminescent moss to guide them. However, when they all entered, the light in the entrance seemed to them like a lightbulb about to go out, and then everything went pitch black. Although they tried to stay close to each other by lighting up the mossy rocks, it was almost impossible to tell if one was first or last in line.
"I take that back, this place is darker than a blackout on New Years…" Dylan commented.
There was the small sound of someone bumping into something or someone.
"Ouch," Keldeo said lighting up in front of him, "A rock wall."
"Ouch!" Dylan yelled slightly, "Mina, you stepped on my foot!"
"I'm sorry..." she replied.
So, they had to turn further to the right and kept going. They had to perform many more twists and turns. Zack, somewhat nervous because of so much darkness, thought that they had lost all sense of direction, and he no longer had any idea where the entrance to the cave was.
"Shh!" Keldeo stopped them, "Do you hear that?"
The others fell silent. There was the sound of someone breathing... in a very strange way. Through the dim light from the mosses, Zack managed to see that Keldeo was looking up, looking for the source of that sound.
"You are not welcome!" a voice yelled, furious approaching.
"Watch out!" Keldeo warned them.
They all managed to see his attacker: A large Toxicroak came down with a powerful blow. Fortunately, it didn't hurt anyone as Keldeo warned them in time, but the blow hit the ground, making the ground crunch under their feet (or paws). Instantly, all their bodies felt descending with great force: they were falling.
Zack found himself sliding hopelessly at ever greater speed down a slope that became steeper by the minute. It was not a smooth and firm slope, but one made up of little stones and rubble; He couldn't get up as he fell at such a speed, he could only hear the sound of stones falling next to him, not to mention the sound of the others' screams. However, the next second, he stopped hearing them… how was it possible? Remembering what Virizon said, that place was a large network of caves. In short, he had separated himself from the others.
Instantly, fear coursed through every inch of his body as he fell into the unknown with great speed and darkness. Remembering Rex, now he felt what he felt and, assuming, he had an unrecognizable fear that he would end up torn apart deep down.
But, miraculously, he did not have that fate, because something very strange happened: his legs had ended up hooked to the wall thanks to an electrical charge released by his claws. He couldn't see them, but he could feel them. When he released himself, he could feel the smooth ground under his paws, no more slipping. He was on solid ground.
"Magnetism…" Zack mused, "Uff, I'm lucky… oh no! Where are the others? And my glowing stone? Guys! Where are they? Rose! Dylan! Mine!"
But no one answered him and there was no other noise. To make matters worse, the stone with the glowing moss was missing; he was alone in the dark and it was such that it didn't matter if his eyes were open or closed. Shinx's skin prickled with fear as the shadows covered everything. Despite the fact that he had faced enemies imbued with darkness and the courage he had shown was authentic, Zack's fear of pure darkness made him always leave behind a luminous object (cell phone, nightlight or something similar) before going to sleep in the human world. But now it was totally dark and he was alone.
"There is nothing in the dark..." his inner voice told her, "I shouldn't be afraid..."
He walked with fear and alone for a while, feeling the wall to try to find some way out. Each step seemed to sink deeper into that darkness. However, after a few minutes blindly, he could see a light at the end of that tunnel.
"Light?" Zack thought when he saw that, "Thank God! An exit!"
Without thinking, he ran towards that light, which little by little proved to be indeed a way out. But, when he thought that he was free from the clutches of darkness, he paused for a moment, remembering that the others must still be lost in the darkness... but what could a scared guy like him do?
As he considered whether he should go back into the dark depths or go out and find another way to help, a shadow at the exit blocked his path. There, he saw the silhouette of that enormous Pokemon that had attacked them at the beginning, only that an aura of darkness was seen around it, implying that he was possessed by a dark atom.
"You're not welcome…!" Toxicroak snarled before launching himself. Zack had no choice.
"Time to evolve!" he yelled.
Now, transformed into Luxio, he gained enough speed to dodge that direct attack, but before he knew it, the Toxicroak kicked him so powerfully that he was thrown towards the ceiling and then fell to the ground.
"Aaaau" he muttered trying to get up again, "That hurt..."
The Toxicroak attacked again and Karatazed him so hard that he sent Zack flying a few meters into the light. If the Luxio didn't get up, then it would be the end of him.
"Venoshock!"
A powerful jet of unknown poison was heading at full speed towards Zack, but he managed to evade it by an inch and thanks to his effort. However, the attack hit the stalactites near the exit, creating a small cave-in and blocking out the only light that illuminated that dark tunnel. Now, everything was dark again.
"No..." Zack thought before receiving a blow. Apparently the Toxicroak had no problem fighting in the dark.
At the first blow, he was followed by two and three more... Zack couldn't hold out any longer, he was alone, in the dark and with a very strong enemy for him. He wished only to at least fight in the light...
"Don't give up," Mew's voice whispered in his head.
"Mew?" Zack answered in his mind.
"You must not be afraid of the dark, you must be brave before it. Your friends are waiting for you after this dark tunnel, and you won't see them if you give up now… do you want to stay alone in the dark or meet your friends in the light?"
"I…"
"It's your end!" Toxicroak yelled.
"I want to get out of this darkness!" Zack yelled, firing a powerful discharge that knocked the Toxicroak down and lit up the place. On the Luxio's chest a symbol had appeared that illuminated that gloomy place: a symbol that represented lightning.
Zack remembered that symbol, because it was similar to the one that appeared with Rex. From the low brightness, he could see his enemy getting up again. It was now or never.
"Ultra Evolution!"
The symbol in conjunction with the Pokephone glowed and the Luxio began to evolve again: its body grew, its fur stood up on its back, and its tail stretched out. It had evolved from Luxio to Luxray.
"Woah" he said looking at his change, "I've evolved again…wait! can i see myself and also the cave?
Zack's new eyes were now dark-adapted, with superb night vision capabilities. And not only that, he could also see through walls. It was a wonderful thing, though he could clearly see the Toxicroak attacking him first.
Deftly, the new Luxray was able to dodge it with greater dexterity than he had shown before, implying that his agility had increased as well. Immediately, he began his counterattack.
"Thunderbolt!"
An even more powerful electrical discharge from what was previously Thundershock emanated from Zack's body and slammed into the enemy Toxicroak, causing it to scream in pain. But the dark pokemon was still lingering as he tried to hit it with a poisonous blow. However, Zack protected himself with his tail, which was now covered in a metallic sheen.
"Iron tail!"
With more force, Zack deflected the Toxicroak's blow and hit him in the face, making him step back. Then, with all his energy, the Luxray prepared one last attack.
"Charge Beam!"
He unleashed a powerful bolt of highly charged volts, impacting Toxicroak and sending him flying against the rocks that blocked the path to the exit. When he was defeated, the dark atom detached from the Pokemon's body and disappeared. Zack still hadn't lost his transformation, so, with his new ability to see through walls, he scanned the caves for his friends.
In less than he imagined, he was able to notice some Pokemon walking through another adjoining tunnel. So, using the iron tail, he collapsed the wall, meeting Mina and Dylan who were still holding their glowing stones. They did not recognize him at first.
"Calm down guys, I'm Zack" he told them.
"Zack?!" asked Mina, "Wow, you've evolved again!"
"That's right, and I have night vision and through solids."
"Brilliant!" Dylan said, "Rose is with Keldeo collecting some of the water we came for."
"Okay, and I found the exit. Let's get everything together and get out of here."
Zack, Mina and Dylan met with Rose and Keldeo, who were also surprised by Zack's new evolution. Both of them had been collecting some water in an area of the cave that was miraculously illuminated with a hole where a sunbeam fell and reflected in the water, illuminating the surroundings. It was a heavenly environment hidden in the deepest shadows.
"Woah," Zack exclaimed, returning to his base form, "It's the only place in this dark cave that's lit."
"We happened to drop by near here," Keldeo explained, "Then we ran into Dylan and Mina. And, it seems that you managed to evolve. Although I still can't explain how you return to the initial form "
"We don't know how to explain it either" said Mina, "Just go ahead and that's it"
Finally, with everything ready, they left the cave. Toxicroak was still unconscious, so they made sure to let him sleep, for even though he had been cleansed, according to Keldeo, he would still have some grumpy resentments. When they left, Keldeo and the others closed their eyes, to establish a connection with Espeon and Umbreon.
"Guys!" Espeon said in his mind, "We hear you!"
"Get ready!" Umbreon warned them, "We will reopen the portal for you to return!"
"Thank you!"
It took only a few seconds, but the same crimson-red beam of light appeared in front of them, and without hesitating for a second, they all jumped into it.
