"Everyone has three lives: public, private and secret." -Gabriel Garcia Màrquez
One week later, Derek hadn't seen Luke around playing basketball anymore and considering that the kid used to be seen at the basketball court everyday, Derek is worried about Luke. Worried that something may have happened to him, but without knowing Luke's last name Derek couldn't really ask his dad to look into it. To check on the kid that Derek had befriended.
Derek was sitting in the driveway, bouncing the basketball when suddenly Sean came running up the driveway.
"Derek! Derek! You have to help me!" The six year old yelled frantically
"What? What's wrong, Sean? Where's Aaron? How did you get here?"
Sean grabbed Derek's hand, pulling on him in an effort to stand him up, "I took the bus. Now come on, get Emmy. Daddy's hurting Aaron."
"I have a better idea." Derek said as he quickly jumped to his feet, running inside the house grab his phone from where it was charging. He called his dad and then gave Sean the phone.
When David answered, Sean spoke fast and frantically as he explained the whole thing. He was in tears as he was talking and hearing the siren through the phone. David was driving as fast as he could to the Hotchner residence.
"What's with all the commotion and noise out here? I'm trying to read my book on Quantum Physics." Spencer said as he emerged from his bedroom.
Derek walked over to his little brother, "Um...well, it's about Aaron. He's hurt. Sean came here to get help for him."
Spencer hummed as he nodded, "Sean said that their dad isn't Papá. That he isn't nice."
"That's right." Derek added.
Spencer may be a genius, but he's still only six.
Emily had been at a doctor's appointment, so when she walked into the front door only to be bombarded by Sean running full speed at her, hugging here tightly, she was surprised. She heard his sniffles, so she picked him up, holding him close in her arms.
Spencer and Sean may be the same age, but Sean was tinier. Sean was actually a few months older than Spencer.
"Sean, what's wrong?" Emily asked
The six year old didn't answer. He just cried into her neck.
Emily rubbed his back as he went and sat down by Derek, who explained everything to her. David had called maybe a ten minutes before she got home. Aaron's father was in police custody and Aaron was is in the hospital.
"He's in a coma." Derek told Emily
"It's all my fault. Aaron was protecting me." Sean cried
Emily made the shushing sound with her mouth, "Shh...Shh...it's okay. It's not your fault, Sean. It's not Aaron's fault either. Your father is the only one at fault."
Sean sniffled, "O...oh..kay."
"Is Aaron going to be alright?"
Derek shrugged, "Papá's with him now. The doctors say it's too soon to tell."
"Where's Spencer and the girls?"
"At the neighbors, playing with their kids. Sean didn't want to go. He was waiting for you."
Emily gave a nod, "Okay. I'm gonna go see them." She stood up, still holding Sean in her arms. He was clinging pretty tightly to her.
Meanwhile at the hospital with David and Aaron, David was sitting beside Aaron's bedside, staring at the boy hooked up to monitors, and all because he had been protecting his brother from their father.
"Admittedly, I didn't like you when I first met you. I mean you did get my daughter pregnant, but now look at you." David let out a sigh, "You have to be okay. You have to wake up, Aaron. Your brother is counting on you. You're going to be a father in three months."
The only sound that was heard was the beeping of the heart monitor, letting David know that even though Aaron wasn't conscious, he was still alive.
David knew that he had to go home to his kids, but he knew that Emily and Derek were home and his younger three were at the neighbors. His kids had each other. He felt bad that other than Sean, Aaron had no one. Other than Sean, Aaron was all alone. Especially with his father going to jail.
"You're not alone anymore, Aaron." David leaned over and whispered to the boy, "You are the father to my grandchildren. We are family now."
As David stood up and walked out of the hospital room, he made a mental promise to bring Sean to see Aaron tomorrow. The doctor had told him that the first twenty-four hours were crucial. Aaron had been pretty badly beaten. There was quite a bit of swelling in his brain, and they needed to wait for the swelling to go down before they could access how much, if any, brain damage there is.
It was a terrible situation. Sean would take it pretty hard if Aaron didn't make it. But Sean wasn't the only one to consider. Emily loved Aaron. She was having his twins. David knew that his daughter wanted to marry Aaron. If Aaron died, that wouldn't happen. His brother and his children would grow up without him. If there was one thing that David had learned about Aaron, it was that he was a fighter. He hoped that Aaron would make it out of this. That he would fight and pull through, but unfortunately, only time would tell how much, if any, damage his father had done to him.
