Darjeeling awoke in a fright, she looked around in a daze. Then it hit her, she was in a tank, her Churchill.
as she twisted in her space, a notepad fell off of a small shelf by her elbow. She picked it up and studied it closely.
'Oct 27th 2017, 64th Annual Tankery Finale. Team Notes' A wave of confusion washed over her.
"Was it all a dream?" She thought to herself.
*Beep, Beep*
"Do you hear that?" Darjeeling said softly, poking her head out of the Churchill.
"What do you hear?" Pekoe looked up from the loaders seat as Darjeeling peered down at her.
"It's like a repeated slow beeping noise..." Darjeeling noticed a look of confusion on her loader and drivers faces, "Ah, it's probably my imagination" She quickly continued raising a pair of binoculars to her face.
"I'll make a nice cup of tea to calm you down. Pekoe said, opening a small pot and placing some tea bags into it.
"Stop here" Darjeeling said into a microphone, bracing herself against the hatch lid as the tank skidded to a stop.
"Pekoe, how many tanks do we have?" Darjeeling crouched back into the tank, taking a small enamel cup, its gold trim glistening in the soft sunset light.
"Have you forgotten already?" Pekoe chuckled, it's just us left ma'am"
"And them?"
"Just the 1 also ma'am, the Panzer 4 flag tank"
*Beep, Beep*
"That beeping again..." Darjeeling thought to herself. "Though i could have sworn i heard somebody talk that time as well"
She took a deep breath and a sip of the tea. A bitter taste hit her.
"Gah, i think the teas off, Pekoe" Darjeeling shouted, handing the cup back to Pekoe.
"Odd... I just bought it, let me try" Pekoe said, having a sip. "Tastes fine to me" She handed the cup back.
"Somethings not quite righ-" *BOOM*
A silver shell flew past darjeeling hitting a rocky outcropping behind her. She ducked down into the tank.
"PANZER 4 FLAG TANK, 300 Meters" Assam called out swinging the turrert to return fire.
"Pekoe, load AP" Darjeeling called out, taking command of the situation. "ASSAM, prepare to fire"
"Loaded" Pekoe called out.
"Target spotted, ready to fire!" Assam followed.
"OK Fir-" *BEEP* *BEEP*
The soft beeping interrupted her again, this time, she definitely heard someone say doctor.
"Fir-" She tried to say again, only to be interrupted by the emergency radio crackling to life.
"CEASE FIRE" it was the sound of Ami, the head referee. "ALL TANKS ARE TO RETURN TO THEIR SHIPS AND CAST OFF IMMEDIATELY, DO NOT STOP, DO NOT ENGAGE THEM, DO NOT TAKE ANYONE WITH YOU" her voice had a twinge of panic to it, and was almost drowned out by the noise of an engine roaring through the radio.
"What do we do?" Pekoe looked at Darjeeling, panic in her face.
"Make for the ship" The driver looked at darjeeling and nodded. The Churchills engine roared to life.
"Ma'am, all but one team tanks have reported in at the ship" Assam said, slowly turning the volume up on the radio.
"Who's missing?" Darjeeling questioned.
"Rukuriri"
Darjeeling gulped.
"I'm sure she'll be fine ma'am" Pekoe placed her hand on Darjeelings.
"Y-y-Yes" She sighed.
Darjeeling stood up and looked out the tank. People we're running in a panic, she saw helicopters flying over head, then a column of tanks heading towards her. They were a mixture of British marked Challenger tanks, American marked Abrams and Japanese Marked Type 10 tanks, beneath each countries flags, two big white stenciled letters - "UN".
The emergency radio crackled to life again, "This is Alan Pearson of UN Task Force Theta, Ami, you are to link up with your unit and move to grid 7-Delta-Oscar"
"Yes Sir" Darjeeling heard Ami reply.
"Once there you are to clear and hold for evacuation helicopters. Command wants to get as many out as we can before we pull out" A firm voice ordered.
The radio fell silent again.
Darjeeling looked up again, more an more helicopters flew over head. each one marked "UN".
*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*
The beeping had gotten louder and more frequent, She heard a voice shouting between the beeps, the only words she could make out were "Shock".
Darjeeling looked ahead, they'd reached the ship.
Their tank slowly made it up to a ramp and boarded the ship.
Darjeeling sighed and climbed out onto the tank. She looked out over Oarai, gunfire and explosions mixed with shouting and panic. She felt the ship beneath her begin to move. Slowly pulling away from the dock.
She hopped down and walked to a small fence, sailors running around her. The stench of smoke hit her nose, as a fireball ripped through a building on the dock, knocking her from her feet.
Two jet plans came soaring past shortly after.
Darjeeling slowly climbed to her feet then turned and grabbed pekoe, who was calmly reading a book sat on the armor plate above the track. Assam was calmly climbing out of the hatch behind her.
"WHAT IS GOING ON" Darjeeling shook her.
"You know what's happening, you've been here before" Pekoe said, looking back to her book.
Another sortie of jets flew over head, followed by more explosions in the town.
Darjeeling ran back to the fence where the ramp had once been.
Then she saw her.
A woman stood at the dock, her crimson red uniform and dark brown hair stood out within the crowd.
"Rukuriri!" She shouted, trying to climb the fence, two sailors sprinted towards her, she could see their mouths move, but yet, not a sound came from them.
They grabbed her and pulled her down. Darjeeling saw Pekoe and Assam watching from the tank, Pekoe had carefully placed the book down next to her, it was small, red and had a gold trim...
"Pekoe help!" Darjeeling called as the two sailors held her down and tried to calm her. "Rukuriri is still on the dock!"
"What do you mean Darjeeling?" asked Pekoe.
"She's already long gone." Assam continued
"WHAT?" Darjeeling's voice quivered. "What do you mean?"
"You know were right Darjeeling, after all. It's all thanks to you." they both said unison, each with an unnaturally wide smile.
Darjeeling crawled to the fence, trying to spot the figure of her teammate once more.
Hopelessly, she watch the dock getting further and further away.
"You know you cant change what you did" Pekoe barked, "After all, you wrote it down"
"Wrote what?" She cried.
Pekoe dropped the small red book she had been reading next to Darjeelings head. Darjeeling twisted under the two sailors, who seemed as though they weren't even aware of Pekoe or Assam's presence. Then she saw the cover "Darjeeling's Diary 2017".
"There's nothing we can do now" she finally heard one of the sailors say in a vain attempt at trying to calm her.
Darjeeling looked up, once more and finally caught sight of her, watching Rukuriri slowly fade into the crowd.
"It's time to go now. I'm sure we'll see you again" Assam whispered to Darjeeling, before both her and Pekoe clicked their fingers.
Suddenly, everything went black and silent.
Then she noticed it again, that...
*BEEP* *BEEP* *BEEP*
Darjeeling sat bolt upright.
"Oh thank god" Kay shouted, as two doctors ran into the room, followed by Pekoe, Assam and Miho.
Darjeeling looked around, and saw a machine to her right rapidly beeping with an ECG on its screen. A set of IV drips stood on a tower to her left.
Darjeeling tried to get up, as the doctors held her down.
"I need to go" She shouted.
"You need to rest" The doctor retorted, holding her down.
"I saw her Pekoe", she said between deep breaths.
"Who?" Pekoe asked confused.
"Rukuriri, the day it happened" Darjeeling said as the doctors gave her medication to calm her.
"It's ok" Pekoe said, calming her.
"We'll get her back" Kay said, getting up and running out to make a call.
The medication then took effect and Darjeeling fell back to sleep, the soft beeping slowly drifted away.
"Will she be ok?" Assam inquired.
"She'll be fine" the doctor announced, "we just need to control her recovery, the stress caused her to collapse. but now she's awoken, we can begin to do more tests for any effects we've not been able to spot yet" He picked up a notepad from the end of the bed and scribbled something onto it.
"Thank goodness" Assam replied, slowly sitting back down.
