At exactly 10:10 AM Leland knocked on Adrian's door. Adrian answered the door with Trudy close in tow.
"Monk," Leland said, "Natalie… you two look happy."
"That would be an understatement," Adrian said, "I just found out the best news ever."
He opened the door further and allowed Leland to step in.
"What's the news," Leland asked.
"Natalie is actually Trudy," Adrian replied.
"Who what now?" Leland asked, sitting down.
Trudy nodded.
"It's a long story," she said, "But yes… I am actually Trudy."
"That… doesn't seem likely," Leland began gently.
"I know," Adrian said, "It's not likely. It is true."
Trudy showed him the scar on her shoulder.
"Oh my GOD! How did this happen," Leland asked, hugging Adrian first and then Trudy.
"I have no idea," Trudy said, "I know something caused the bombing, but I have no idea what-"
"And I will not lose her again," Adrian told his friend, "I won't lose her for even another second."
Leland laughed.
"I read you like a picture book Monk," he said, "Loud and clear"
"Technically you don't read picture books. You look at them," Adrian said with a smile.
Leland didn't even roll his eyes.
"So," Leland began, "Who else knows that Natalie is actually Trudy?"
"I do," Adrian said, "and of course Trudy knows."
"So, I'm the first person to find out?"
"No," Adrian said, "I was the first person to find out. Trudy found out at the same time. You're the third person to find out."
Leland held in his sigh of annoyance. Adrian's literal interpretation of everything made him crazy. He could hardly blame Adrian though. When it came to cases he was literally never wrong.
"You don't have to worry about losing her again," Leland reassured Adrian, "She's not going anywhere. You do realize you're going to have to tell a lot of people about this right?"
Trudy nodded.
"We're telling my parents tonight," she said, "I'm really nervous about that."
"They'll be delighted," Leland told Trudy.
"They don't know me as Trudy though," Trudy said, "They only know me as Natalie."
"Listen," Leland said, "If I found out that Jennifer was alive, I don't care how long she had been a 'different person'. I would be beyond thrilled. I would be floored."
"I was floored," Monk said, "Though I wouldn't have fallen on the floor because it's… you know not clean."
Jennifer was Leland and Karen's first child. This year she had been kidnapped and murdered. Her body had been found 5 days after her kidnapping. It was a tragedy that Leland's marriage almost didn't survive. He and Karen were still on shaky ground. They loved each other dearly. At the same time their emotions were raw, and it led to a lack of communication. Now, they were seeing a counselor and it had been helping. Jarred and Max were also going to a therapist. In addition, they were doing family therapy.
"Leland," Adrian asked, "Are you okay?"
"I am today," he said, "It's day by day. I'm also very happy for you."
Adrian smiled.
"Thank you," he said, "You're a great friend Leland."
"You are a great friend too," Leland replied.
Leland checked his watch.
"I'm sorry Monk," he said, "I have to go now. Karen and I have therapy today."
Adrian nodded and said goodbye. He couldn't wait to be alone with Trudy. He hadn't been alone with her since December 14, 1997. He'd been going through a rough time. The fact of the matter is that whenever he went through a tough time it hurt her and whenever she went through a tough time it hurt him. Adrian Monk loved Trudy with every fiber of his being… heart and soul. Without her he was incomplete and now he had her back again. He was complete again. A part of him was worried that this was a dream, but he knew it wasn't.
It was a few seconds before either of them spoke. This time Adrian was the one to break the silence.
"I love you, Trudy," he said.
"I love you, Adrian," Trudy replied.
Trudy paused.
"Do you remember when that actress was hired to portray me?"
"I remember everything," Adrian replied.
"If she had been me, would you have protected her or would you have done what you had to do," Trudy asked curiously.
Adrian cupped Trudy's chin with both his hands and pulled her in for a kiss.
"I don't think there would be a difference," he said, "I would have had to protect her."
He paused for a moment.
"Do you remember anything," he asked.
"I remember the people I love," Trudy said, "and I have some vague memories. None of the memories are very clear right now," she added.
Another knock came on the door. Adrian groaned to himself.
"Should I get the door," Trudy asked.
"I'll get it," he sighed.
It was his friend Judge Joseph Russel.
"Did I catch you at a bad time," Joseph asked Adrian.
"Not at all," Adrian said, "I just found out some great news."
"What's the news," Joseph asked.
"You know my friend Natalie, right?"
"Of course. Hello Natalie," Joseph said smiling.
"Natalie actually is Trudy," Adrian explained.
"Come again?"
"It's true," Trudy said, showing him the scar.
"Well, I'm shocked," Joseph said, "in a good way."
"I know what you mean," Adrian replied, "This is the kind of shock I had been longing for, for ten years."
Joseph smiled at his friend.
"Do you miss Natalie," he asked Adrian.
"Of course not," Adrian replied, "Natalie never existed. I have Trudy back and I won't lose her again… not even for another second."
"Of course, you won't lose her again," Joseph said warmly.
He paused for a second.
"Are you going to move back to Adrian's house," Joseph asked Trudy.
"Actually, I'm moving back to Trudy's," Adrian said.
"You? I thought you were afraid of change."
"I stopped being afraid of change when I found out Trudy was still alive," Adrian replied.
"You never cease to amaze me," Joseph told Adrian.
"Oh you mean because…"
"Because you take love to the extreme," Joseph answered.
"It's hardly the extreme," Adrian said, "If you were me you would have done the exact same thing."
Joseph nodded.
"You're probably right," he admitted.
"What are you two talking about," Trudy asked.
"Long story," Adrian replied, "I'll tell you about it another time."
Trudy nodded. Joseph got a text from his wife.
"I have to go," he said, "Alison is in labor."
"Go," Adrian said with a smile, "Go, go."
Joseph hurried out the house waving goodbye to Adrian and Trudy.
"Adrian? Why do they call you Electric Love at the station?"
"Twelve years ago you were accused of a crime," Adrian began.
"Did I actually commit the crime," Trudy asked– her eyes widening.
"Of course not," Adrian replied, "but the jury was convinced that you had and Joseph suspected that you did too. Joseph and I were good friends however so you weren't sent to jail. You did have to wear a shock bracelet."
"You mean those things that give off shocks at random times," Trudy asked.
Adrian nodded.
"I hate those things," Trudy said.
"After your first shock I couldn't stand it," Adrian continued, "I took the bracelet off of you and put it on myself."
"You did what? You're terrified of pain and of germs," Trudy exclaimed.
"That's true," Adrian admitted, "But I was more terrified of your pain then I was of my own. The next day I had work. I got a shock that day in the middle of the roll call and Leland took me aside after the roll call was over."
"Oh," Trudy said.
"He confronted me about the fact that I was wearing your bracelet for you. I reluctantly admitted it. Leland never ratted me out about it, but he did tease me about taking your punishment for you. As soon as the other guys found out they teased me about it too."
"How long was my sentence," Trudy asked.
"It was supposed to last 12 months," Adrian said, "But when Joseph found out about what I did for you he said anyone who's husband loves her that much could not possibly have been guilty of the crime you were accused of. He allowed me to take off the bracelet and the sentence was considered paid in full."
"Wow," Trudy whispered, "That's incredible."
"Leland asked me if I would have done the same thing for you if you had been guilty," Adrian added.
"What did you say," Trudy asked.
"I told him the truth. There's no way you would have been guilty but even if you were I would have done that for you in a heartbeat."
Trudy's eyes widened again.
"You would have?"
"Maybe two heartbeats," he jokingly admitted, "but absolutely"
"Would you still have loved me if I were guilty?"
"Love isn't a faucet," Adrian said, "You can't just turn it off."
"I like that," Trudy said, "Love isn't a faucet. You're right about that."
"There is nothing that could get me to stop loving you," he told her, "You could have an affair and I would love you just as much. Of course," he joked, "That's not an invitation for you to have an affair."
"I would never do that," Trudy said seriously, "I don't believe in affairs."
"I… they do exist," Adrian said smiling.
"So do shock bracelets," Trudy returned, "That doesn't mean I believe in that either."
"Did you have any relationships during the ten years that we were apart," Adrian asked Trudy.
"Nothing more than friendships," Trudy said, "I always knew that the right man for me would come along. I wouldn't settle for any less than you."
Adrian put his arms around Trudy. She relaxed into his embrace.
"I'm sorry about all the times I got impatient with you as Natalie," Trudy added, "I didn't know. I…"
"It's alright," Adrian replied, "Even I would have gotten impatient with myself."
Trudy smiled.
"I can't believe how much you love me," she whispered.
"I've loved you since I met you," he replied.
"How did we meet," Trudy asked.
"We met at college. I was working as a librarian in the school library and you came in to return a book. The book was late and the fine was $15.00. You only had $15 on you and you needed to have lunch so I paid your fine for you and took you out to lunch."
"I hope that was the last time I ever returned a book late," Trudy remarked.
