Marsha's words hung in the air for a moment.
"But I thought your daughter passed away ten years ago," Gilda finally said.
"So did we," Dwight told Gilda, "Believe me I certainly didn't wake up almost two days ago thinking, today I'm going to get my daughter back. It was the best day of my life."
Marsha nodded.
"It was the best day of my life too," she said.
Gilda smiled.
"You must have been shocked," she said, "for lack of a better word."
"No… shocked would be a very good word to describe how we felt. We've all experienced shocks before but this one didn't even begin to compare with the others."
"Figuratively speaking, you mean?" Gilda asked.
"Literally and figuratively in my case," Adrian said laughing.
"When you love someone there's nothing you wouldn't do for them," Dwight added by way of explanation.
Gilda nodded.
"So how has the news affected you?"
"It's been a whirlwind. Dwight and I just found out less than 24 hours ago. Trudy and Adrian only knew this for less than two days. Our life is changing."
"I imagine you're going to want to see her a lot?"
"We want to see them every day, but we need to be sure we're not taking it too far."
"If you decide to go on our honeymoon with us," Trudy said jokingly, "that may be taking it too far. That's about as much as it goes with taking it too far."
Everyone laughed.
"Can we see you tomorrow," Marsha asked Trudy and Adrian.
"Honey we're here with them today," Dwight pointed out gently.
"You're always welcome," Adrian said.
"Except on our honeymoon," Trudy laughed.
"Actually," Dwight said to Marsha, "Why don't we take a second honeymoon at the same time?"
"Sounds romantic," Marsha said, "I love that idea"
"Do you two have any ideas of where you're going to go for your honeymoon," Dwight asked Trudy and Adrian.
"We haven't even started to plan the wedding yet," Trudy said.
"I do know we won't be going to Singapore," Adrian told them.
"They have some crazy rules there," Trudy added.
"So now that we know where you won't be going do you have any idea where you will be going?"
"On my short list is New York, London England or Paris France," Trudy said.
"Don't forget Hawaii as a possibility," Adrian added.
"How about all four places," Dwight suggested, "We're paying for the wedding, the honeymoon and the party with no limits."
"Seriously!"
"Honey," Dwight said, "This is nothing. It's our pleasure to do this for you."
"Hey," Marsha exclaimed, "We should go to Spain… where we went on our first honeymoon"
"You guys went to Spain on your honeymoon," Trudy asked.
"Oh yes," Dwight replied, "I wanted to go to Argentina, but your mom had been to Spain on an exchange program, and she loved it."
"Did you like it," Adrian asked.
"I loved it," Dwight replied, "Spain was the place where Trudy was conceived."
Trudy's eyes widened.
"Was I a surprise," she asked.
"You were definitely a surprise," Marsha said, "and you were the best surprise we ever got."
"Both times," Dwight added.
"Well," Gilda said, "I guess I'd better go. It was so nice seeing you Marsha and congratulations on getting Trudy back."
Marsha grinned widely.
"Thank you! I'll see you soon," she said.
"You know," Gilda realized, "If you got Trudy back then maybe I could get Amanda back."
Marsha sighed inwardly. She had been through tough times more than once and she knew her friend was probably not going to get her daughter back. Hell, she never thought she would get Trudy back.
"I guess anything is possible," Marsha began gently, "But the odds of that happening are slim."
"So were the odds of you getting Trudy back," Gilda intoned urgently.
"That's true," Dwight replied, "We just don't want you to get your hopes up just to come crashing down on you again."
Gilda looked thoughtful.
"You know," she said, "I think I understand."
She paused.
"Can I ask you one more question?"
"Sure," Marsha said.
"Is it hard for you to share Trudy?"
"Well, you "share" a toy. You "share" a car. You don't "share" a person," Marsha replied.
She laughed.
"Amanda from the grief center asked me the same question," she added.
"Honey!"
Gilda looked in the direction of the voice. It was her husband Matt.
"Okay I really do have to go now," Gilda said, "I'll see you soon."
After about 15 minutes the waitress came over to take their order.
"Hello," she said, "My name is Angela and I'll be your server for today. Can I start you off with a drink?"
"I'll take a glass of 1984 Allacco Cabernet," Trudy ordered.
"Excellent choice," Angela smiled, "My best friend used to love that."
"She's not a fan of it anymore?" Trudy asked.
"She… passed away years ago-"
"Wait," Marsha said, "Was your last name Avise."
"Yes," Angela said, "It was… oh my GOD! You were Trudy's mom!"
"Not was. I am Trudy's mother," Marsha said, "I found out about 18 hours ago that she survived the bombing."
"What! How? Where is she!"
Angela looked like a dog whose owner had finally come home. Marsha motioned to Trudy sitting next to Adrian.
"I know I look very different," Trudy said.
"Not too different," Angela replied, hugging her friend, "I can't believe it's you."
Trudy blushed.
"I don't remember you though," she said gently, "I hardly remember anything about my past."
Angela never lost her smile.
"I have enough memories for the both of us," she said.
Trudy smiled genuinely.
"I'm sorry I didn't recognize you at first," Angela added.
Trudy laughed.
"It was ten years before I even recognized me," she said, "and Adrian knew it first."
The host came over and took Angela aside to scold her for losing focus. Angela came back a few minutes later.
"I'm sorry I took so much time and lost focus," she said.
"Please," Marsha shrugged it off, "You're welcome here. Believe me, your reaction to this is understandable."
"Thank you," Angela smiled, "but I have to finish taking your orders or I will be in really big trouble."
She looked at Trudy.
"Can we get together sometime?"
"How about Sunday? I'll be free in the afternoon."
"That sounds perfect," Angela said.
Angela took everyone's orders. She came back a few minutes later with the drinks. Then she took the food orders.
"I'll be back with your orders in a few minutes," she promised them.
"Great," Trudy said.
After dinner the bill was paid.
"I'll leave the tip," Adrian said.
He pulled out five $20 bills.
"That's generous," Dwight told Adrian, smiling.
"Well, she was a great server, and she was my wife's friend," Adrian pointed out, "Plus the host gave her a hard time."
"Thank you," Angela said, "I had a really great time seeing you again."
"So did I," Trudy replied, "I'm sorry I can't remember you but I'm sure the memories will come back to me."
"I know it will," Angela replied.
Trudy, Adrian, Marsha and Dwight left Starlight and walked back to Trudy's home.
Marsha and Dwight hung out for an hour. After that, it was time for them to go.
"See you guys tomorrow," Adrian said.
"I love you," Trudy added.
"We love you too honey," Dwight told her.
"Drive carefully," Trudy said.
As soon as they left, Adrian and Trudy got ready for bed. It was already 11:45 PM. As Adrian lay down next to Trudy and gathered her in his arms a tear escaped his eye. It was a tear of joy. He had his wife back. She was alive. True, she didn't remember much of the past but that would come back to her and until it did they were starting a new adventure together.
