Trudy used to have nightmares. Adrian watched her as she slept peacefully and was grateful for that. He stroked her hair. The fact that he was in bed with Trudy, watching her sleep didn't cease to amaze him.
"I love you," he whispered to her and kissed her head. Even though Trudy was asleep she smiled.
Adrian could remember one night six weeks after they first got married.
Trudy was asleep but it wasn't an easy sleep. Adrian was falling asleep. He'd had a long day and he was really tired. Suddenly, Trudy started ''talking'' in her sleep.
"NO! I DIDN'T DO IT!"
She was crying and shaking. Adrian knew it wasn't a good idea to wake a sleeping person, but he didn't care. Trudy's nightmare was obviously upsetting her.
He gently put his hand on her back.
"Trudy?"
She woke up shaking.
"Hey sweetheart," he said, "Sounds like you were having one hell of a dream."
"That was no dream Adrian," Trudy said, "Though ''hell'' would be a good word to describe it. It was one of the worst nightmares I ever had."
Adrian hugged her tightly.
"What happened?"
"In this nightmare I was set up so it looked like I had killed someone– which I didn't," she added (as if he would ever believe that she had), "To make it even worse you had to be the one to arrest me."
Adrian took her hand in both of his.
"I would turn in my badge before I would arrest you," he told her sincerely, "Even if I thought you were guilty."
Trudy looked like she was finally able to breathe again.
"I hope I didn't wake you up," Trudy said after a few seconds.
Adrian shook his head.
"First of all, I wasn't asleep yet," he said, "but it wouldn't have mattered if you did wake me up. I love you."
Adrian realized that this must have been the first time Trudy slept peacefully since the bombing. Less than two days ago neither of them had slept. Now, into their second day of being Trudy and Adrian, Trudy had been able to fall asleep.
Adrian on the other hand was far too excited to sleep. He couldn't believe what GOD had done for him.
"Thank you, GOD," he whispered, "After I lost Trudy, I was so mad at you, but you never stopped loving me. I cursed you but you blessed me. I couldn't understand why you took Trudy from me, but you gave her back. Your love never stopped. I'll never stop loving you. I love you more now than I ever did before."
He loved GOD second only to Trudy.
Karen and Leland lay in bed snuggled close to each other. Karen was really quiet.
"Are you alright honey," Leland asked.
"I don't feel alright," Karen admitted, "I miss Jennifer so much today."
Leland nodded.
"I miss her too," he said, "It's unfair that we lost her."
Leland's cell phone rang. He looked at the caller ID. It was the Medical Examiner.
"Honey, I have to take this," he said, kissing her gently.
Karen nodded.
"Hello Martha?" Leland answered as he picked up the phone.
"Leland are you by yourself?" the Medical Examiner asked.
"Hold on," Leland said.
He walked into the other room.
"What's going on," he asked.
"I was reading over the autopsy report that Jack wrote," the Medical Examiner explained, "and it's not possible that the body found in the trash can two weeks ago was Jennifer."
"I'm sorry? We saw her. She was Jennifer's height and weight. She had Jennifer's scar from her surgery when she was five-"
"She also had her appendix," the Medical Examiner told Leland.
"Jennifer had her appendix out when she was five," Leland said, "So you're saying Jennifer is still alive?"
"I don't know that" the Medical Examiner said, "She's been missing for nineteen days. We know the chances of finding someone alive is slim after they've been missing for more than 48 hours. What I do know is that the sooner you get on this case the better chance you have of finding Jennifer."
Leland nodded slowly.
The conversation continued for a few more minutes and then lulled. Leland and Martha said goodbye and hung up the phone. He tiptoed into the bedroom in case Karen had fallen asleep. She was awake.
"Who was that Leland," she asked him.
Leland took a deep breath. He had to be honest with his wife.
"That was the medical examiner," he said, taking her hand.
"Okay," Karen said, "What did she want?"
"She read over the notes from the autopsy. Her assistant, Jack, did the autopsy."
Karen nodded.
"Honey, the dead girl-"
"LELAND," Karen exclaimed, "OUR DAUGHTER'S NAME WAS JENNIFER, NOT ''THE DEAD GIRL''"
The last time Karen yelled at him like that he'd been in big trouble with her.
"Honey," Leland gently intoned, "Jennifer is not the girl that was found in the garbage can."
"WHAT! HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT?" Karen exclaimed, feeling her heart skip a beat.
"Jennifer had her appendix out at age five," Leland said, "The girl that was found still had her appendix. Martha believes that this girl was made to look like Jennifer in order to punish me. She thinks the kidnapper may have been someone I arrested or that my testimony sent to prison… or a family member or friend of that person."
"So, you mean that Jennifer may still be alive!"
Karen's eyes lit up.
"There is a good chance of that," Leland told her even though he himself knew that the chance of that wasn't as good as he wanted it to be. He wanted it to be 100% true that Jennifer was alive.
"Oh GOD! Leland, that's amazing."
"One step at a time," Leland cautioned.
"What's the next step," Karen asked.
"I'm going to put Monk on the job," Leland told Karen, "Actually I'm going to go see him right now. I hate to bother him when he's just reunited with Trudy but-"
"Back up. Isn't Trudy dead?"
"No," Leland said, "She survived the bombing."
Karen's eyes could not have gotten wider without falling out of her head.
"My friend is alive," she asked Leland.
"She is. We've actually known her for a time. Natalie is actually Trudy."
Karen blinked.
"Not that I don't want to hear all about this, because I do," she said, "However get the heck out of here and go get Jennifer back."
"Can I bring you anything back," Leland asked her.
"Yes. Jennifer," Karen said.
Leland kissed her and told her he'd be back as soon as he could.
Leland knocked gently on Adrian's door. Seconds later Adrian looked through the peephole and opened the door.
"Hi Leland," Adrian said in a whisper, "Trudy's asleep so– I don't want to wake her up. She's sleeping so peacefully."
"Of course," Leland said, "Should we talk outside?"
They sat on the porch.
"Monk," Leland said, "I'm taking you off the general force for a time and putting you on a specific assignment."
"What's the assignment," Adrian asked.
"The assignment is to find Jennifer," Leland said.
"Um… Leland," Adrian began gently, "Jennifer's in heaven."
"The girl found in the garbage can wasn't Jennifer," Leland said, "She still had her appendix."
"Consider me on the case," Adrian told him.
"Thank you Monk," Leland said, "I'll get you the file."
