Leland looked at the clock in his hotel room. He was beginning to feel anxious. It had been a full day and they still had yet to locate Jennifer.
"Okay," he said to Randy, "It's getting light out. I want to start looking again."
"Captain, you didn't get any sleep last night," Randy pointed out.
"My daughter is missing," Leland pointed out, trying his best to remain calm, "The kidnappers are moving her from pillar to post. Who knows what she's been through? She's been missing for five months, and we only recently became aware of the fact that SHE'S ALIVE. I want this search going until she is found!"
"Yes," Randy said, "I totally understand. The point though is that she's alive. Every second she's out there, we have people searching for her. She will be found."
Leland knew Randy was right and he had really appreciated his friend's encouragement. His cell phone rang before he could respond. It was Karen
"Hi honey," he said, picking up the phone.
"Leland," Karen asked, "Anything yet?"
"We're getting closer," Leland said, "The fact is that the kidnapper is onto us, so they keep moving Jennifer."
"Oh GOD-"
"The search is on 24/7," Leland said, "We'll find her, and she will be okay."
"Be careful," Karen said, "I love you."
Leland smiled.
"I love you too," he said, "I always will."
They said goodbye and hung up.
"Do you remember when the fake Trudy accidentally killed Zach Ellinghouse?" Randy asked.
"Random much," Leland asked, "Of course I remember that."
"What would you have done," Randy asked, "if the fake Trudy had been the real Trudy?"
"Had a major headache for one thing," Leland joked.
"No but seriously," Randy said, "Would you have listened to your heart or your brain?"
Leland turned serious.
"My heart and my brain were saying the same thing Randy," he said, "I couldn't stand to see my friend lose his wife again. Besides, if anything happened to her Monk would kill me."
"Do you think he would have protected her, or would he have done what he had to do," Randy asked.
"What's the difference," Leland replied.
Randy thought about that for a minute. He realized Leland was right.
"Maybe I mean do you think he would have done the right thing," Randy amended.
"In that particular case," Leland said, "Protecting her would have been the right thing to do. Every situation is different."
Randy nodded. Suddenly Leland's cell phone rang again.
Leland saw that it was Monk. He picked it up.
"Monk… what's going on," he asked.
"Whoever took Jennifer brought her back," Adrian replied, "They dropped her off at our house… well Trudy's house… and my house… so our house."
"What? Who took her? Where are they now? Where are you guys? Is she hurt?"
"I suspect it was Scott Krimpy," Adrian said, "though I don't know for sure. I have no idea. They rang the doorbell and left. She seems okay but we took her to SFGH just to be sure nothing is wrong. She's been through a traumatic experience and who knows what may have happened in the 5 months she's been missing."
At that point Leland didn't care who took Jennifer. Jennifer was back. That was the important thing.
"Does Karen know? Do the boys know?"
"I called Karen. She's on her way. Trudy's going to watch the boys because Karen doesn't want them to know what's going on until we know that she's alright. Once she gets there I'll join Trudy. Leland, she's been through a hell of a lot; emphasis on hell. She's going to need therapy and she's going to need no negativity. You can't even act negative when she's around. I told Karen the same thing."
"I already know that Monk," Leland said.
Leland said he would call Adrian back in the car. He quickly dressed. Randy and Leland went downstairs to get the car and Leland paid the bill.
"I can't believe it was $900 for one night," Randy exclaimed, "You'd think we were staying at the Ritz Carlton or something."
"I don't care how much it cost," Leland responded, slipping into the passenger seat, "I'd pay the world to get my child back."
"I get it," Randy replied.
He got into the driver's seat.
"What's going on Leland," Randy asked.
"Whoever took Jennifer returned her," Leland replied.
He filled Randy in on what he'd learned from Monk.
"Wow," Randy said, "First it turns out that Trudy is alive and then Monk finds Jennifer. You should put him in the missing persons specialty," Randy said.
"Trudy wasn't missing. She was presumed dead," Leland reminded him, "So was Jennifer for that matter."
Leland called Monk.
"Leland," Adrian asked, "Where are you?"
"I just got in the car," he said, "Randy is driving. Is Karen there yet?"
"Not yet," Adrian replied, "Trudy just texted me that she got to your house so Karen's leaving now."
"Thank you Monk," Leland said.
"You're welcome," Adrian replied.
Leland could hear the smile in his voice.
"I'm happy for you Leland," Adrian said, "I really am. I'm not a father yet so I don't know what it's like to lose a child but I do know what my life was like up to 8 days ago. I can't imagine what you've been going through but at the same time… I understand it because when I lost Trudy-"
"I know," Leland said, "So many people are less fortunate. They don't have their loved ones back."
"That's what a member of my father-in-law's grief group said," Adrian thoughtfully replied.
"He's right," Leland replied, "I will never forget how blessed I am."
"No," Adrian answered, "Neither will I."
He paused.
"Do you think it's hard to be a father," he asked.
"Is Trudy pregnant," Leland returned.
"No," Adrian said, "The bombing destroyed her reproductive organs. We've been talking about adopting though. She wants a baby girl."
"What about you," Leland asked.
"Well, I want to wait until after the wedding and the honeymoon," Adrian replied, "Trudy does too. I'm just worried I won't be a good father…"
"It's a decision you will never regret," Leland told Monk, "And I agree that it's a good idea to wait until after the wedding and the honeymoon. You will be a great father."
"Trudy and I both agree we want to stay positive," Adrian said.
"Karen and I agreed on that when Karen was pregnant with Jennifer," Leland said.
"Do you always keep to that," Adrian asked.
"It's not easy," Leland said, "Especially after Jennifer was taken. About three months ago I got in huge trouble with Karen."
"I remember that" Adrian said, "I think you were right though."
"You're a good friend Monk," Leland said, "You know that?"
"You are too Leland," Adrian replied.
Leland could hear that Adrian was smiling.
"How's Jennifer," Leland asked.
"They took her back a few minutes ago," Adrian said, "Trudy's mom is volunteering there today and is staying with her so she isn't alone."
"Trudy's mom volunteers at SFGH?"
"Yes. She's a listener. Trudy volunteers on the pediatric ward. Her dad volunteers in the gift shop and I do the cleaning."
Leland couldn't help smiling.
"That's the perfect job for you," he said.
Adrian laughed.
"Don't I know it? I love to clean. In fact, when I was a little boy and I did something wrong I would get grounded from cleaning."
"Most people would consider that a vacation," Leland said.
"I've never been 'most people'," Adrian replied
"I think that's the truest thing you ever said," Leland laughed.
"I wouldn't want to be 'most people'," Adrian added, "Most people wouldn't have done the things I did. Most people wouldn't have the wonderful blessing that came my way eight days ago."
"Is it weird," Leland asked.
"Is what weird," Adrian returned.
"Knowing that Natalie was Trudy," Leland asked.
"Natalie wasn't Trudy. Natalie doesn't exist. Trudy was Natalie."
"Do you miss Natalie?"
"Of course not. Natalie isn't real. Trudy was Natalie. It's simply complicated."
"So," Leland asked, "Did you and Trudy think of any names for the baby you plan to adopt?"
"Trudy wants to call her Hope," Adrian said, "I love that name. I also like the name Julie but Trudy doesn't really like that name so I think we'll go with Hope."
"That's a beautiful choice," Leland said smiling.
"Leland? Karen just got here so I'll call you back in the car on the way to your place," Adrian said and then hung up.
