Ambrose stayed for ten minutes. When he left, he promised to come back in a few days
"Dr. Sussan said to start small," Ambrose explained.
"She's right," Trudy commented, "I mean I'm terrified to start a car but there are times Adrian makes me drive. It's because he doesn't want me to live my life afraid."
"That's no way to live your life," Ambrose said, "Believe me. I've lived most of my life afraid."
"Every time I start up the car and it doesn't explode; I breathe another sigh of relief. In my mind I know I'm safe but after the bombing… after I remembered the bombing it's hard to remember in my heart that I'm safe."
"I understand completely," Ambrose replied, "It's scary. You went through a trauma."
"I had nightmares about the bombing for five nights in a row," Trudy acknowledged, "By the fifth night I called Adrian. I remember because when I woke up it was 12:08 but when I called him it was 12:10."
"Did you purposely wait the two minutes," Ambrose asked curiously.
Trudy laughed.
"Not consciously," she said, "but I do know Adrian loves the number 10… and 100."
Ambrose laughed.
"Adrian loves a lot of things," he said, "Most of all he loves you."
"You know," Adrian said, "I never knew what love was until I met Trudy."
"Well," Ambrose said looking at his watch, "I'd better get going. What if I come back on Monday?"
Trudy smiled gently at her brother-in-law.
"You're welcome here any time," she told him.
Adrian nodded in agreement.
"Great," Ambrose said, "I'll call you in a day or so."
"Call us when you get back," Trudy replied, "We want to make sure you get back safely."
"Of course," Ambrose promised.
He left the house and called 10 minutes later.
"I got home safe and sound," he announced.
Adrian and Ambrose talked for a few minutes, but Adrian really had his mind on Trudy. That was what the majority of their conversation was about.
"Adrian," Ambrose began, "Did you pick a best man?"
"We haven't even picked a spot for the wedding yet," Adrian said with a laugh.
"Well just… keep me in mind, okay?"
"Sure," Adrian said, "I'd be honored to have you as my best man."
Adrian made a mental note to not overwhelm his brother.
"Anyway, I should probably let you go now," Ambrose said, "See you next week."
"I love you," Adrian told his brother.
"I love you too," Ambrose replied.
Adrian smiled and went over to Trudy. He put on the radio. Just as a song ended it was announced that Willie Nelson was doing a concert at the local theater.
Adrian immediately saw the look in Trudy's eyes.
"Can we go," she asked Adrian.
"Sure," he said, "I'll just order the tickets."
He called and ordered backstage passes.
"I'll need your name," the clerk said.
"Monk," Adrian replied, "Adrian Monk."
"Okay. Two backstage passes will be $140.00."
Adrian gave the clerk his credit card information and the sale went through. He said goodbye and hung up.
"I got us backstage passes," he told Trudy, "VIP treatment."
Trudy kissed him.
"Thank you, Adrian," she said, "I love you."
"I love you more," he told her.
The doorbell rang. Trudy answered the door for her mom.
"Hey mom," she said, hugging her, "So guess what happened? Adrian got us two backstage passes for Willie Nelson."
"That's great," Marsha smiled, "When is the concert?"
"Tomorrow night," Adrian replied, "I could get passes for you too and Dwight."
"Sure," Marsha said, "Let me just text Dwight and see if that works for him."
Marsha sent a quick text to her husband. Less than a minute later Dwight sent his answer.
Sounds great but we should pay for the passes.
Marsha sent a text back.
I agree. For Trudy and Adrian too.
Dwight sent a thumbs up.
"Your dad and I are going," Marsha told Trudy, "And we'll be paying for the passes."
"Are you sure," Adrian asked, "You're already doing so much. I mean, you're paying for the wedding and the party without limits."
"I'm a mother," Marsha said, "A mother that lost her daughter for ten years and just got her back. When you lose someone that you love, the grief never stops. Six days ago today, the grief stopped. Six days ago today, I was no longer a parent that no longer had a child. Six days ago today, I got Trudy back. We got Trudy back."
"I know," Adrian replied.
Trudy relaxed as Adrian put an arm around her and pulled her close to him.
"Thank you so much," she said, "This is so generous of you guys."
"It's nothing honey," Marsha said.
"It's not nothing," Trudy said, "It's a huge thing– and I hope you know how much we appreciate it."
"Sweetie," Marsha said, "We know you appreciate it."
The doorbell rang again. Adrian opened the door for Dwight. He hugged Trudy and Adrian. He kissed Marsha.
"Hi dad," Trudy said.
Dwight blinked. He was starting to feel a little emotional.
"Hi sweetheart," he said.
"So mom told me you guys invited us on your trip."
"We did. We're taking care of it all of course."
"Thank you," Adrian whispered emotionally.
Ilizabeth looked over at the picture of her and her best friend. Today she really missed her friend.
"Honey?" Shane asked her, "Are you okay? I know you're kind of going through a tough time lately."
"I lost my friend ten years ago," Ilizabeth said, "You would think it wouldn't hurt so much anymore."
Shane put an arm around her.
"It always hurts," he said.
The doorbell rang.
"I wonder who that could be," Ilizabeth said, "Were you expecting anyone?"
Shane shook his head. He looked through the peephole.
"It's Adrian," Shane said, "and it looks like there's someone with him."
Ilizabeth sighed. She really didn't want to see her friend's husband with another girl. Shane opened the door.
It was only after Adrian and Trudy came into the house that Ilizabeth gasped. Trudy was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and she could see the scar on her left shoulder.
"Do my eyes deceive me," she exclaimed, "Is this really Trudy?"
Trudy laughed.
"They don't and it is," she said, "It's a long story but the short version is I survived the car bomb."
"Oh my GOD," Ilizabeth exclaimed hugging her friend, "When did you find out?"
"I found out who I was exactly one week ago," Trudy said, "Well, Adrian found out really."
"She was in a coma for a long time," Adrian added, "Last week she started having nightmares about the bombing. She called me after Midnight on the fifth day. I came over and… well you know the rest."
"Why didn't you tell me when you first found out," Ilizabeth asked.
"We had to tell my parents," Trudy said.
"Besides," Shane added, "We were on vacation."
Ilizabeth realized that was true.
"I can't believe you're back," she said.
"I can't believe it either," Trudy replied.
"We should get together," Ilizabeth said
"We definitely will," Trudy promised, "Tomorrow night I'm going to the Willie Nelson concert. I have a therapy appointment tomorrow morning. Why don't we meet tomorrow afternoon."
"Absolutely," Ilizabeth said, "Say 2 o'clock?"
"That's perfect."
Trudy looked down at Ilizabeth's slight bulge in her belly.
"Are you…"
"Yes. I'm three months along. It's a girl."
"Do you have any names picked out," Trudy asked.
"We're naming her in honor of you. Trudy Robin."
"That's my favorite name," Adrian said.
"Do you want kids," Ilizabeth asked Trudy.
"We're adopting," Trudy said, "After our wedding and honeymoon we're adopting. We decided on a newborn girl. We're going to name her Hope."
"You two are getting married again?"
"Yes," Trudy said, "We still have a lot of plans to make."
"Can I come to the wedding," Ilizabeth asked.
"Of course," Trudy replied.
They stayed for a couple of hours. Soon after they had to leave. Ilizabeth and Trudy hugged goodbye.
