The concert was great. It started at 8 o'clock and ended at midnight.
"That was great," Trudy said.
"Do you guys feel like catching a bite," Dwight asked
"Sure," Trudy said, "I could go for something."
"Me too," Adrian replied.
They drove to Starlight. Adrian insisted that Trudy drive. With a little hesitation she did.
"Honey it's alright," Marsha said, "I know it's horrifying what you went through. The past can't hurt you."
"More and more memories are returning to me," Trudy said, "I feel like I'm finally becoming myself again."
"Eventually you'll get all your memories back," Dwight told her.
"Even if you don't it doesn't matter," Marsha added, "The important thing is now."
Trudy knew they were right.
"Will it always be weird for me," she asked.
"It will probably always affect you in some way," Adrian answered putting his hand on her shoulder, "You've been through an ordeal. You are literally becoming yourself again."
"What if I never remember everything," Trudy wondered
"That's alright," Adrian said.
"You're remembering more and more every day," Dwight added.
Trudy smiled. Her family was right. The past didn't matter as much as here and now mattered. Trudy saw Starlight and pulled in. She parked and they went into the restaurant. Angela was their server.
"Angela," Trudy smiled, "Hi."
"Hey. I had so much fun seeing you the other day," Angela said, "I'm looking forward to Friday."
"So am I," Trudy replied.
"So, what do you want to drink you guys?"
They all ordered their drinks. Angela brought it to them in less than a minute. She took their orders and brought it to them in 10 minutes.
Leland looked at his wife. He couldn't help but smile. She was so beautiful. Lately they had the best relationship. They'd gotten Jennifer back. The boys were happy. Karen saw him smiling and she grinned at him.
"How did you sleep," she asked him.
"I was actually up most of the night," he smiled, "I haven't felt this good in a long time."
"I know what you mean," she said, "The last time I had a sleepless night… was probably the last time you did."
Leland nodded. The last time he had a sleepless night it had been agonizing. This time it was wonderful.
"Jennifer finally slept through the night," Karen added.
"I know," Leland said, "I keep the baby monitor on just in case she has a nightmare so I can go in and assure her that she's alright."
Karen nodded. She'd been doing the same thing. They hadn't used the baby monitor in four years… since Max was a baby, but Karen always saved everything.
"What's on your mind honey," Leland asked.
"I'm just thinking about that time… a few months ago. I'm so sorry that I got mad at you, and I was-"
Leland saw the tears streaming down her face. He wiped her tears away with his thumb.
"You have nothing to be sorry about," Leland said, "You did nothing wrong. I love you. I've loved you since I met you. Nothing will ever change the fact that I love you."
"My emotions have been all over the place lately. I have no idea why that is."
"Well, we've been through a lot," Leland replied, pulling her into a hug, "My emotions are also all over the place. That's normal."
Jennifer got up. She came downstairs.
"Good morning honey," Karen said, "How did you sleep last night."
"Great," Jennifer replied, "I didn't have any nightmares."
Max and Jared came downstairs a few minutes later.
"Could we go to IHOP for breakfast," Max asked.
"Sure," Leland replied.
Later that day Jennifer had an appointment with Dr. Bella. It was her first appointment.
"Hi Jennifer," Doctor Bella said.
Jennifer smiled.
"Hi," she said, "You must be Dr. Bella?"
"Yes, I am," Dr. Bella replied, "It's nice to meet you."
"You too," Jennifer replied.
"So, you're the oldest right?"
"Yes. I'm twelve. Jared is eight and Max is four."
"I'm the oldest too. I have a younger brother named Charles. He's four years younger than me. I also have a younger sister named Diana. She's 10 years younger than me."
Bella paused.
"So," she said after a few seconds, "Your dad told me about your kidnapping."
"He doesn't know the half of it," Jennifer said quietly.
Tears pooled in her eyes.
"I was beaten every day. I was denied food and water most of the time. I was kept blindfolded so I wouldn't know where I was and who was doing it."
"Were you…"
"No," Jennifer replied, "I wasn't raped or anything like that."
Bella nodded.
"Whoever took me knew my family. He threatened to kill Max if I took off my blindfold."
"You must have been terrified," Bella said.
"I was," Jennifer said, "and even though I didn't show it I was mad too. Don't mess with my family."
Bella smiled.
"I'm protective like that of my family too," she said.
"Anyway," Jennifer replied, "After what seemed like forever the kidnapper dropped me off at the home of a family friend. They called my dad right away. They also took me to the hospital. There was nothing of concern in my tests. Mentally though there's a lot to be concerned about. Last night was the first time in awhile that I slept without having nightmares.
"Tell me about the nightmares," Bella asked gently.
"Mostly it's about the kidnapping," Jennifer said, "I wake up screaming and crying. My parents always come into my room to calm me down."
"Have your brothers asked about your nightmares?"
Jennifer nodded.
"It scares Max. I try to reassure him that I'm okay but I'm not okay. This isn't normal. NOTHING ABOUT THIS IS NORMAL. IT'S NOT FAIR! NONE OF THIS IS FAIR! IT'S ESPECIALLY NOT FAIR TO THE PEOPLE I LOVE. GOD!"
She broke down crying.
Bella gently touched her knee.
"Jennifer," she said, "It may not seem this way but this is healthy. You're getting your feelings out instead of letting it fester."
"Thanks," Jennifer said after she calmed down, "I'm sorry that I was talking so loud."
"Hey," Bella said, "You can talk as loud as you need to here. You can scream if you need to. You're here to get better."
"I found out later that whoever kidnapped me murdered another person who looked like me and put her in a garbage can. A GARBAGE CAN LIKE SHE WAS A PIECE OF TRASH OR SOMETHING! He wanted my dad to find me in the trash."
She air quoted the word "me".
"That seems to make you angry," Bella said.
"It does for two reasons. First of all, that little girl was someone's daughter and possibly someone's sister and someone's friend etc."
Bella smiled.
"You're a very compassionate person Jennifer," Bella said
"Thank you," Jennifer replied.
"What was the other reason it made you so angry," Bella asked.
"Because whoever did that did it to punish my family. I remember when I asked the person who took me why he was doing this he said, "Your father took away my son. Now I'll take away his daughter."
"That must have made you feel awful."
"He then told me nobody would look for me because they thought I was dead. GOD knows how long later I was finally brought home."
"Well Jennifer," Bella said, "Our time is up for today. I'll see you in 2 days."
Leland and Karen came in after Jennifer came out.
"How is she doing," Karen asked Bella.
"Your daughter is a very compassionate young lady. You should be very proud."
Leland smiled.
"We are proud of her. We're proud of all our kids."
Bella told them a little bit about what Jennifer had been through. Leland felt a shudder run through him. Years ago he'd arrested a young man named Payton Zackary. He was found guilty and sentenced to the death penalty. When Payton was put to death his father looked at Leland and said, "You'll pay for this Stottlemeyer. You will feel my pain."
"I think," Bella said, "We should have her come in every two days for awhile."
"Of course," Leland and Karen said together.
