As soon as Trudy and Adrian got home the next day there was a knock at the door. It was Leland.
"Leland," Adrian said, "Hi!"
"Hey Monk," Leland said, "Do you have a minute?"
"Sixty every hour," Adrian said, "What's up?"
"I think I know who kidnapped Jennifer," Leland said, "Paul Zackary."
"Who?" Trudy asked.
"When I arrested his son Payton," Leland explained, "he was furious. Payton ended up getting the death penalty and Paul told me I would pay for this, and I would feel his pain."
"So, what are you going to do," Trudy asked.
"Paul Zackary," Adrian said thoughtfully, "Isn't he a lawyer?"
"He is. He works with Ethan Rickover."
Trudy turned pale and she started shaking.
"Trudy? Honey, are you remembering something," Adrian asked.
"Ethan is a really bad guy," she said, "I don't remember why but I remember he did something."
"That pathetic excuse for a man has always been in our radar," Leland said, "He's done some horrible things. The problem is he has everyone in his pocket."
"How do you put a person in your pocket," Trudy asked confused.
"It means he holds the strings of every judge from here to Nebraska," Leland explained, "Are you okay?"
Trudy nodded. She'd finally stopped shaking. Adrian rubbed her back.
"How often does this happen," Leland asked.
"I'm not sure exactly," Trudy said, "It doesn't happen often but when it does it's horrifying."
"I can imagine," Leland said.
The doorbell rang.
Trudy answered the door for her parents.
"Hi honey," Marsha said, "You look beautiful."
"Thanks mom," Trudy said hugging her mom and dad, "We'll be ready in a minute."
"Where are you going," Leland asked.
"We're going to look at venues for the wedding," Marsha explained.
"That sounds like fun," Leland smiled, "Well I'll leave you guys to it."
They started with The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square.
"This is gorgeous," Trudy said.
Adrian smiled.
"I like it," Marsha replied, "We'll keep it on the list."
Dwight nodded.
"It's got space for 300 guests," he said.
The next stop was the Beacon Grand. It was nice but it was missing liability insurance which would make Adrian and Trudy responsible if someone got hurt. The final stop was the Kohi mansion.
"This is the one," Trudy and Adrian said in unison.
"It's perfect," Dwight agreed.
"My only concern is it's not handicapped accessible," Marsha said.
"Yeah. I thought of that too but none of the guests are handicapped," Trudy pointed out.
"That's true," Marsha agreed, nodding.
"Do you have a wedding date picked out," the tour guide asked them.
"August 8th," Adrian and Trudy replied in unison.
"Perfect. How many guests are you inviting," the tour guide asked
"There will be 300 guests," Marsha said, "That includes family and friends."
"301," Adrian said, "Ambrose is coming too."
"Really? That's amazing," Marsha exclaimed.
"He said he wouldn't miss my wedding for anything," Adrian said.
"His actual quote was, "there's no way I'm missing my brother's wedding," Trudy said.
"Something like that," Adrian smiled.
"He's already starting to leave his house," Trudy added, "He's gone to our house once and is coming again on Monday."
"That's quite a brother you have," Dwight said to Adrian.
"Hi Karen," Dr. Richard said.
Karen had an appointment with her doctor. She'd been having stomach pains lately. She thought it was just stress, but she had stomach cancer when Max was two years old. She just needed to make sure it wasn't back again. Dr. Richard was a family friend.
"Come on," he said, "Let's take a look see and find out what's going on."
He did an ultrasound and found no sign of cancer.
"Well," Dr. Richard said, "There's no sign of cancer but I'd like to check your uterus."
Karen nodded and held her breath. Dr. Richard put the wand on Karen's uterus.
"Um… are you aware that you're pregnant," Dr. Richard asked.
"What? How far along am I?"
Karen was worried that she was having a miscarriage. Dr. Richard took one of her hands.
"You're going to deliver today," he told her.
"WHAT! YOU'RE TELLING ME I'M 40 WEEKS PREGNANT AND I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW IT," she exclaimed.
"It can happen," Dr. Richard said, "We have to get you to the hospital."
Karen nodded numbly. She was really scared now that there would be something wrong with the baby.
"I need to call Leland," Karen said, "I need him there. My GOD if I had known I was pregnant I would have gone to-"
"Karen, take a breath," Dr. Richard said, "The baby is fully developed. You took great care of yourself. I will call Leland and give you the phone. Your baby will be born perfectly fine."
Leland was in his office when the phone rang. It was Dr. Richard.
"Hello?"
"Leland," Dr. Richard said, "You have to get over to SFGH as soon as possible."
Leland felt a knot in his stomach.
"What's wrong," he asked.
"You're about to be a father for the fourth time," Richard said, "Karen is 40 weeks pregnant and in labor."
"I'm on my way!" Leland replied and left the office.
Questions and explanations could wait until later. Karen was one of those women who made other women jealous because when she went into actual labor, it didn't last very long. Jennifer, their firstborn was born after only two hours of labor. Jared had been about an hour and Max was only a matter of minutes and was nearly born in Leland's car because they were trying to make it to the hospital in rush hour. If he wanted to be there to see his new son or daughter be born he knew he had to haul a$$ immediately.
"Where are you going Captain," Wendy asked.
"Family emergency," Leland replied and continued on his way. He raced to his car, got in and drove to the hospital as quickly as he could.
Even so he just barely made it thanks to an accident on the freeway. He was just outside the delivery room when he heard Dr. Richard say, "You're at 10 centimeters. You can start pushing whenever you're ready."
"I'll be ready when Leland gets here and not before," Karen snapped.
Leland hurried into the delivery room.
"I'm here. I'm here," he said, "Sorry it took so long; there was an accident on the freeway."
Dr. Richard smiled as Leland went over to his wife's bedside and took her hand.
"I'm glad you made it Leland," he said.
Then he turned his attention back to Karen.
"Now let's get this baby born."
After thirty seconds of pushing a beautiful baby girl made her way into the world. Dr. Richard announced it was a girl and weighed her.
"She's 6 ½ pounds," he said, "and very healthy."
The baby was born screaming from the second her head emerged.
"She's gorgeous," Karen whispered as the baby was placed into her arms.
"I know. She looks just like Jennifer as a baby," Leland said grinning.
"What should we name her," Karen exclaimed.
"What about Caroline," Leland suggested remembering how Jared and Max would have been Caroline if one of them had been a girl.
"That's perfect," Karen said, "Caroline Lisa?"
"I love the name Lisa," Leland smiled.
They'd almost named Jennifer Lisa but she didn't look like a Lisa when she was born.
"I love the name Lisa too. It reminds me of your name."
Leland smiled.
"I'll go pick up the boys and Jennifer," he said.
Jennifer was at her therapy session. The boys were at school. He picked Jennifer up first.
"Hi dad," Jennifer said brightly.
"Hey sweetheart," Leland said, "We're going to go pick your brothers up from school."
"Is something wrong," Jennifer asked, alarmed.
Leland put a reassuring hand on his daughter's back.
"Your mom just had a baby," he said, "You have a new little sister. Her name is Caroline Lisa."
"Wait," Jennifer excitedly put a hand up, "Mom was pregnant and she didn't tell us?"
"It's not that she didn't tell us," Leland said, "She didn't know herself. She went to Dr. Richard today and found out that she was 40 weeks pregnant and in labor."
"WOW! That's amazing," Jennifer exclaimed.
A few minutes later they were at the elementary school to get Jared. Leland explained what happened and signed Jared out. He then went to Max's nursery school and signed him out. He explained to the boys what happened.
"I'm a big brother!"
Max was extremely excited. Jared was excited too. Leland led them to Karen's room.
"Hey you," Karen smiled at her children.
"Mommy!"
They looked at the baby in the bassinet.
"She's so beautiful mommy," Max said, "Can I hold her?"
"Of course," Karen said, "Sit on the bed with me."
Max scrambled onto the bed. Karen settled Caroline into Max's arms.
"Jennifer," Karen asked, "How did your session go today?"
"It went really well," Jennifer said, "I like Bella. She genuinely cares about people. How do you feel mom?"
"I feel fantastic," Karen said grinning.
"Can I hold her now," Jared asked.
Max handed Caroline back to Karen. She settled Caroline in Jared's arms. It was Jennifer's turn after that.
They stayed as long as they could. When visiting hours were up Dr. Richard promised they could come back that evening. Leland drove the kids home then called Monk.
"Hi Leland," Monk said.
"Monk, I'm putting you in charge for awhile. I'm taking some time off. Karen had a baby today."
"What? Congratulations. What did she have?"
"She had a beautiful baby girl," Leland said, "Her name is Caroline Lisa Stottlemyer."
"I love that name," Monk said, "How is the baby?"
"Full term. She's healthy and perfect," Leland remarked.
"Congratulations," Monk said, "How long are you going to be away for?"
"Monk," Leland said, "I have to go. Jennifer's having a panic attack."
"Okay," Monk said, "Bye"
When Adrian hung up Trudy asked what was going on.
"Leland and Karen had a baby today. Caroline Lisa Stottlemeyer. Leland put me in charge until he's back."
"Wow," Trudy replied, "We should go visit her."
"Great," Adrian smiled, "Visiting hours are from 8 to 10. We'll go at 8."
"I didn't know Karen was pregnant," Trudy said.
"Neither did she," Adrian replied.
"Let's go get a gift for Karen and the baby," Trudy suggested, "Maybe Jennifer and the boys too."
